Book Description
His Insignificant Other is one of the funniest and most endearing debut novels to hit the shelf since Bridget Jones's Diary. With a freshness and wit that is at times laugh-out-loud funny, at others heartbreaking, Karen V. Siplin brings to life a truly memorable character.
"They say there are few guarantees in life, but when you're a woman on the verge of turning thirty, there are several. Without fail, a gorgeous woman will always manage to introduce herself to your boyfriend at a party the very minute you stick a chicken wing in your mouth. The part of you that turned off the telephone ringer and lowered the volume on the answering machine just to have a couple of hours to yourself will disappear and you'll want to talk to the man in your life, whether he's special or not, every minute of the day. And the moment you and your boyfriend reach a significant milestone, like an anniversary, a woman from his past is sure to reappear."
These are the words of Casey Beck, a twenty-nine-year-old African-American college professor from New York City who is sick of her job, her friends, her boyfriend, even the margaritas at her favorite Southern-style bar. Staring at the road to thirty, Casey is hoping for a little love, a little sex and a little bit more out of her world. And then -- boom. Her boyfriend's ex-girlfriend, whom she had hoped never to see again -- the ex-girlfriend who had slept with her man only a few months before; the ex-girlfriend who always acted prettier, sexier, smarter, cooler than her -- walks into her apartment one night and refuses to leave her life.
A hilarious, heartrending look at twenty-something living, His Insignificant Other is the story of a group of friends who are trying to decide whether it's time to settle down or move on. When Casey finds herself re-examining the contented couple life she thought she had created, she begins to realize that sometimes the pictures we paint for our own happiness are not always so accurate. Telling more than just the story of a bored professional searching for satisfaction, Karen V. Siplin brings to light the ennui that exists in all of our lives, both at the workplace and in the bedroom.
Whether laughing or crying at the wild, risky world of relationships, His Insignificant Other is a candid look at life and love on the verge of thirty.

SHAMELESS!!.......2004-10-12
I really took a liking to the graphics on the cover of this hardback novel, and that's what initially drew me in. What kept me interested was the storyline itself; I found it to be the tale of a woman on the cusp of thirty, who is just beginning to come into her own. Casey Beck has a film degree and has "settled" for teaching at a local New York college, not knowing what else to do. She's "in love" with John Paul, her boyfriend of 5 years....but the return of his ex-girlfriend, Mali, has sent her entire life into something of a tailspin. What follows are confrontations (as all travel in the same circle of friends) and what I considered to be avoidable drama. Although I liked the author's reading style, I found this novel to be riveting...in much the same way one cannot avoid viewing a train wreck. I found NONE of the characters at all likeable--not sure if that's a reflection of the storyline itself or a lack of character development on the part of the author. The behavior of all of the friends involved--Mali, Polo, Peter, you name it--I found to be unbelievable and borderline ridiculous.
Three stars mainly because I'm having difficulty separating my dislike for the characters from my enjoyment of the book itself. I would recommend this tale as an enjoyable, light, read.

And the answer is..........2004-09-17
Casey falls asleep while waiting for her boyfriend, John Paul, so they can celebrate an anniversary of togetherness when suddenly she is awakened. Someone is in the room with her. It is not John Paul as she had hoped, but Mali, John Paul's former girlfriend. Mali has just returned to the United States from a trip abroad and has nowhere to stay. Mali pleads with Casey to let her stay with her until she can resolve her homeless situation. Of course Casey's first thought is "no way" but she is also astute enough to know that if she doesn't agree to help her, Mali will simply go to John Paul and beg to stay in his apartment. Casey feels insecure because John Paul has cheated on her with Mali in the past. He claims it was only once but Casey doesn't want to put that temptation before either of them again.
This book is sad and funny at the same time as Casey attempts to find out who she really is, what she will tolerate and whether or not John Paul truly loves her and is the man for her. In her search, we meet her friends. These young people occasionally switch partners, disapprove of each other's mates, throw wild parties, all in the name of searching for their future.
It is a clever, well written novel that is entertaining and a pleasure to read. While the subject is serious, there are some scenes that will have you laughing out loud. It is a very realistic look into the lives of twenty-something people.

Significantly Enjoyable!.......2004-07-15
Blessings on Karen Siplin. Yesterday I had jury duty and her first novel, His Insignificant Other, saved my sanity. I loved this book even more than Such a Girl - which I also greatly admired - and I hope that all those who only read the second will go back and read the first. From start to finish, this is a smart, entertaining, provocative, never-drops-the-ball-once kind of read featuring a complex heroine who is neither sinner nor saint but just a confused human being like everyone else I know.
The Worst Book I Have Ever Read.......2004-07-11
If I could give this book a 0 star, I would. It was a complete waste of time. I don't know how any person could give this book 5 stars. The plot was indistinguishable and went nowhere. It was absolutely torture to read. Reading a dictionary would be more entertaining.
End from Beginning.......2004-07-09
I read the book about the girl who worked at the hotel as an operator and I really enjoyed that one. There aren't too many African-American writers who can catch on to authentic dialogue, humor, sarcasm, and diversity all in one novel. Where some specialize in one, they also completely fail in another. It was interesting to see Siplin pretty much ignore the race identity factor in the book, which was almost a relief because many times, it's not necessary to bash it in the ground (read: Omar Tyree). She knows how to set up a sex scene without giving me entirely too many graphic, vulgar details (read: Eric Jerome Dickey and Zane). She also knows how to add humor and sarcasm in the same crisp fashion as Lynn Messina. The operator book was good, but it slowed down in the middle. This book was a great read all the way through. I love the ending. Phenomenal. Even when the main character was dead wrong in some parts, along with other characters, Siplin has a way of making you forget that "fill-in-the-blank" is wrong and we should be mad at them. Her characters are colorful, grip the page, and make me appreciate an easy, enjoyable read. I will definitely buy all of her books.

Abyssals are scary...........2006-02-20
My reason for getting this book is that I am currently planning a plot line for an epic-level Exalted game. Pretty ambitious, considering it'll be the first Exalted game I've DMed. Anyway, the plot line necessitates a repentant Abyssal, so I needed to read up on them.
Abyssals are heinous. That's just the way they were made. I mean, just look at their Charms!!! Ouch. Just, ouch.
I was surprised the book had as much information as it did. Full bios of 8 of the 13 deathlords (intentional, so the storyteller can also make up her own), full character creation rules for ghosts, and three circles of necromancy spells! (and those are heinous too)
It also discussed the turning of Solars to Abyssals and the much more difficult turning of Abyssals to Solars (albeit, in passing). I was thrilled, as this is exactly what my story line will be about. This is an awesome resource, though I would never want to play a truly evil Abyssal.
Exalted: The Abyssals.......2005-10-25
A very illuminated work about darkness in Creation. Mentions the true name of a Deathlord.
Yet Another book only technically about the exalted.......2005-07-27
White Wolf is doing a great job of sneaking out it's large scale settings books mixed in with sufficient crunchy bits to keep the kids interested.
This book is largely about ghosts, and the politics of the underworld with a later section on the hard rules of creating and playing Abyssals. I noticed a certain disconnect over when they were talking about normal ghosts and when they were talking about the Abyssals.
To be honest, I had no intention of ever letting my players play these guys, and just got the book for the setting materials, and a hint of flavour from the powers section. To that end, the book served me well, making many references to the older wraith game, but adding enough new details to give it a unique exalt feel.
If you really want crunchy bits for playing abyssal exalted, or are interested in how the underworld works, buy this book.
Coolest Exalted Product Yet.......2003-08-02
I'm not sure which book the reviewer who called this book uninspired was reading. I would consider this to be quite possibly the most flavorful and inspired offering for Exalted that White Wolf has released to date. As opposed to Lunars or Dragon Bloods where the systems are mere formalities which are there to fill potential holes in the system, the mechanics of the Abyssals simply drip with sanguine flavor. Who can oppose a system with "Artful Maiming Technique" or "Crimson Petal Armor," with in game descriptions that just drip with creepy majesty.
A lot of the descriptions of the Underworld and the way it makes is torn right out of Wraith, but Exalted has always borrowed from the World of Darkness, and Wraith was among the coolest World of Darkness settings (largely unplayable, but übercool.) Reading this book also makes Wraith make more sense, which is helpful.
The weakness of this book is that it's not as playable a game as, say, dragon blooded or the Core book. But it's definitely cooler than either, and not in a "I embrace all things of angst" sort of way. It's creepy and wonderfully detailed, and flows naturally. You have to play either a villain or a tragic antihero, but my experience is that such things yield some of the least angsty characters in the hands of experienced RPGers ("Okay, I'm damned... better get over it and deal.") Despite the fact that it's not as playable as Core or DB. It's significantly better than Lunars and possibly the coolest Exalted book yet.
Well... neh.......2003-07-09
While the book is plumb full of interesting ideas and really abstract and creative details, it's really not the coolest Exalted book so far. In fact, since the Dragonblooded came out, I wonder where the authors' coolness ran. While reading the book I get flashed images of a bunch of middle aged former D&Ders sitting around a table, drinking soda and eating potato chips, trying to fit every single idea into this book. (Like a "Dual Monarchy" which is actually four personalities. Wait? Monarchy? Dual? What?) It's far too detailed, and this really takes away from those initial "cool ideas."
Yeah, the powers are cool, and Abyssals are tanks to fear -- that much is true. Don't by this book for the literature or the setting.

Paradox Alley.......2002-02-01
This book completes a mind-stretching trilogy that never fails to entertain. From the first book of the series, "Starrigger" through "Red Limit Freeway" to "Paradox Alley", the reader is treated to concepts so amazing and soul stirring that it harkens back to the Glory Days of hard science fiction. More importantly, Mr. DeChancie's sense of humor and irony shines through in all three books. His characters are believable and as "real" as any ever created by Heinlein himself. You care about what happens to them. These are amazing pieces of fiction and if anyone in Hollywood hasn't opted them for the big screen, they should.
Essential to the story arc, and a good standalone read also.......1999-05-16
This is the second book in one of the best series ever, with a great "hard science" foundation, and a great story. I couldn't put them down until I had read the entire series through, and sorely regret that I cannot find a copy of this book anywhere.
The third chapter in the timeless 'Skyway' between the stars.......1999-03-06
After finally finding and reading (twice over) this last book of John DeChancie's Starrigger trillogy, all I can say is I was sorry that the story had to end...this author has put together a set of books with a story so interwoven and captivating that you will find you won't want to put down untill you are finished. My gratitude to John DeChancie for a great adventure!

The Swedish palette of soft pastels conveys an aesthetic simplicity like no other. Even though I do not live in a stately mansion or a castle (beautifully photographed throughout the book) I became inspired to add the same colors and textures to my own decor. Stenciled borders, tromp l' oleil, marbling, and delicately painted wall canvases add harmony and warmth to your living space.

Beautiful images reveal the Swedish room as a work of art that has a place in every home.

Swedish interiors through the centuries.......2006-02-13
The cover and the look-inside-glimpse do not do this book justice att all. It's not all that rural and folksy, but has wide range of interiors from palaces, mansions, farms and cottages. The in-put from Italy (and later France) was huge in the days when Sweden was a major European power in the 17th century. The book moves on into the Gustavian era of simple elegance and continues to regency and the summer-houses that became popular in the 19th century. A very well illustrated book with excellent photos.
The Swedish Room.......2003-06-06
Beautiful book, well researched and written with carefully selected and beautiful photos. A must have for anyone interested in Gustavian interiors and the homes that contain them. The interiors selected for this book are the relatively simpler ones with soft color schemes and a cleaner, pared-down look - ones more acceptable to contemporary tastes - rather than the gilded neoclassical palaces of the same period. If you are interested in the more palatial interiors of the same period I recommend: Neoclassicism in the North, Swedish Furniture and Interiors 1770-1850 . I noticed in browsing through this book, that a number of the interiors selected for inclusion in The Swedish Room are actually the simplest rooms in otherwise grand palaces.
A very pleasing selection of interior views overall and much better than Barbara Stoeltie's similar book, The Country Houses of Sweden.
Comprehensive & useful.......2003-03-20
I have found this book a constant inspiration when considering the Swedish style in general and Gustavian in particular.
The photos and colours are excellent. The text begins by being historically interesting and illuminating but becomes unfocussed and then banal. The translation is awkward in parts. Still the information is superior to the commonly gushy interior design style.
Although there is a section on contemporary versions of the classic Swedish styles, it remains primarily an homage to the original rather than an illustration of an inventive combination.
Nonetheless, an excellent reference book.
A Decorative Artist`s Delight.......2002-03-01
This is a wonderful book for an a decorative artist or faux- finisher. It has a wealth of information you can use in designing ideas for this very popular time in history . I have used this book many times in designing art for furniture and walls .A must-have for any decorative artist or designer.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful interiors.......2004-09-26
This is a lovely book with beautiful color pictures from what I think is authentic interiors. The author walks us through the essence of swedish style via colors, fabrics, accessories and furniture. I miss not having typical interiors and suggestions of how to decorate individual rooms such as hallways and kitchens etc. The main focus is on livingrooms and bedrooms. I still think it's a good purchase and this book gives me a lot of inspiration.
Good basic intro but prissy.......2003-04-03
This is a good and basic introduction to the elements of Swedish style in interior design.
There is a simple historical summary that captures the background to Swedish design without making erudite comments on the style itself, other than to list the fundamental principles.
The asthetic choices are very tuille and English in flavour; something that a middle-class London matron may aspire to. The lack of real recourse to original Swedish design and then imaginative and tasteful modern alternatives makes this book disappointing.
"The Swedish Room" is far more inspiring and authentic.
Book Description
A lively informative text accompanied by more than 200 full-color photos gives readers a tour of the most important and integral aspects of Swedish interior design. Cargill provides practical information and step-by-step instructions in four areas--color schemes and paint effects, furniture, textiles, and accessories.

A beautifully photographed book with easy to follow instructions to achieve the Swedish look. Covers all aspects furniture, paint, linens, curtains, etc. It also offers a good summary of Swedish history and how that affected the look through the years.
Create your own swedish look with this easy to follow guide.......1998-09-04
A well photographed book that explains and introduces the concept of Swedish design at a very simple level for the non decorator crowd. After reading this book just visit any Ikea store to verify the information and start your decorating scheme. In many ways Martha Stewart has duplicated her interiors by using this cool and clean look. Perhaps you can do the same, at a fraction of the cost, with these simple and inexpensive ways to decorate your home.

Book Description
A hotel should always be a comfortable extension of the surroundings or the dream that we have of how these surroundings should be. The author has looked for those places that are different from where we live. This charming book presents an interesting variety of small boutique hotels whose main feature is comfort without luxury-a simple and cozy atmosphere-that transmits to the reader a relaxing feeling, very far from the big hotels and resorts, that are often cold and impersonal.
Customer Reviews:
Agatha Tries Again with James Lacey and Falls in with Villains.......2007-10-06
As with The Deadly Dance and The Perfect Paragon, this book can be read as a standalone if you haven't read the earlier books in the series. I do think, however, that your enjoyment will be increased if you read at least The Deadly Dance and The Perfect Paragon first . . . and seriously consider reading the excellent beginning of the series, Agatha Raisin and the Quiche of Death.
If you are a long-time fan of the series, you may be ambivalent about the reappearance of James Lacey in Agatha's life. But in Love, Lies and Liquor (the 17th book in the Agatha Raisin series) there's a shift in the relationship that makes his character somewhat less tiresome than before.
James is living next door to Agatha again and invites her to take a holiday with him to a "surprise" locale. She packs for the Mediterranean and he takes her to the rundown seaside resort of Snoth-on-Sea where the weather is lousy. While James has fond memories of boyhood trips there, today's Snoth-on-Sea has nothing to recommend it. The hotel is rundown, and the guests seem like louts. In fact, there's a shouting match in the hotel dining room that leads to James punching out one of the other guests.
When a woman that Agatha threatened, Geraldine Jankers, is found strangled with Agatha's scarf, the "lucky" pair from Carsely are stranded as they seek to clear Agatha. Clearing Agatha isn't too difficult, but James wants to flee and Agatha feels that she must investigate to find the murderer. Agatha draws on her Mircester detective agency's resources to scout out the suspects.
Before long, Agatha draws the ire of some dangerous characters and finds her very life at stake.
Several things make this book different from others in the Agatha Raisin series that improved its appeal for me: Agatha and her colleagues make some amazing mistakes that would be hilarious if they didn't have serious consequences; the danger level is high throughout much of the book; there are more mysteries to be solved that are related to the murder than one might expect; the to and fro with James Lacey has unexpected twists; and Agatha's signature vulnerability for handsome men she just meets isn't central to the story for a change. Her detectives are proving to be more able than in the past which provides for some better procedural aspects to the story. The change of scene is also good for the series by providing lots of new characters as well as the opportunity to reprise old characters in new ways.
The pacing of the story is very good. Major shoes drop at regular intervals without much warning that take the mystery and its implications in new directions. My interest was sustained at a high level for almost the entire story. The humor is well developed in the story as many characters take the equivalent of pratfalls . . . but in each case there are serious consequences which gives the mood of the book an interesting feel than a more unrestrained comic mystery would provide.
I look forward to the next entry in the series. I hope it will continue to the trend towards better stories and more rewarding mysteries with more subtlety among the characters.
entertaining!.......2007-08-01
My first encounter with Agatha Raisin was well worth it. Ok so it's not Tolkien but still a very worthy diversion when the mind needs a mental holiday for several hours. It might have been just a tad over long, but it certainly kept me interested and entertained all the way to the end. Just like meeting a new friend.
Love, Lies and Liquor.......2007-06-15
Let's see. Did I like this? My husband gave it to me for Xmas. I've bought every single paperback since the beginning and just re-read Love, Lies and Liquor.
I love this series!
The series is becoming tiresome........2007-05-23
Things haven't changed much in this latest installment. In spite of her wealth and success, Agatha is still insecure and somewhat immature. In spite of his recent healing from cancer and his spiritual retreat, James Lacy is still cold and selfish, and is really quite stupid. At 53 or so, Agatha still views herself as having a girlish figure and dresses in twentyish-something apparel. She is often quite coarse and rude, and she still says, "Rats!" Even more disappointing is none of the lovable characters from earlier books make a significant appearance in this one.
I have always looked forward to the next "Agatha" book but the series is getting a bit tiresome. The plot "formula" hasn't changed from previous books and the reader is subjected to a lot of dialogue of Agatha giving her staff instructions (or in this case, phoning them to tell them what to do). I put this book aside after reading about halfway through and may not finish it for a while. Agatha isn't as much fun as she once was.
Comma-tose.......2007-04-17
I do love Agatha Raisin, but this book fell short of Beaton's usual brilliance. The first chapter was great. After that the author brings in a dizzying array of characters going in and out. The plot was hard to believe.

Best of Verneuil.......2007-02-28
This book exceeded my hopes. It had many more images in full color than I expected for such a cheap book. I have seen other books by Verneuil and they were half as nice and mostly black and white. I think anyone into decorating, drawing, and painting will like this book. It will inspire you to create art nouveau lines and flowers on your own work.
Good designs.......2006-11-05
If you are into art nouveau, you will enjoy this Dover book. Again many variations on floral themes.
Beautiful artwork, beautiful reproductions.......2006-06-07
I thought the artwork in this book was stunning, and the reproduction quality and colors were lovely. I did have one major problem with the book, two of the main designs on the cover (topmost horizontal design and the center horizontal design) are NOT IN THE BOOK! These are two of the main patterns I planned to use from the book, and now if I want to, I need to get them from the cover, where they are covered by text. I found this to be unacceptable! Please keep this fact in mind if the cover is what won you over.
Fine Art professional point of view .......2006-03-21
This book helps me in my work big time. I'm free freelance artist and right now I'm working on my next big project in Art Nouveau style and I can not imagine my work without this book.
Sit down before you open this one.......2006-01-14
Dover Publications is the friend of anyone with nearly any sort of interest (and not much money). If you're interested in the ways and means of New Art, get this one.
M. Verneuil clearly would have liked the Dover editors. LIke them, he had his wide-ranging interests, in his case in botany, Japanese design, and decorative arts (to judge by his booklist).
This book is a feast that shifts back and forth from stylization and abstraction on one hand to close observation of natural plant forms on the other. One two-page spread (plates 62 & 63) in particular juxtaposes both this reduction into pattern and the accuracy of his eye.
These are the crown imperial and the German iris from Verneuil's Etude de la plante. Side views of each plant give you the random visual complexity of the original -- almost scruffy leaves, in the crown imperial's case. Both set forth the visually overwhelming detail of the blossoms. But, at the bottom of both plates are plan views of a blossom, simple, regular and compelling as a Japanese mon.
If the rest of Verneuil's plant book is this good, I'm hoping Dover reprints the whole thing one day.
When Verneuil moves to greater depths (or is it heights?) of abstraction, the results are often stunning. Don't miss plate 27, an overall pattern of maidenhair fern in shades of orange, or plate 28, a tiled pattern of wild iris in rippling water.
It's interesting to compare the sunflowers in plate 79, apparently a detail from a running line of tiles, with the one in plate 59 from Etude de la plante. The latter captures the petals in wild abandon, the leaves in their rough, almost papery reality. The former flattens and regularizes each leaf, and views the flowers head-on, giving us a literal sunburst of shape and color in complex but regular pattern.
Throughout, M. Verneuil brings a solid color sense, now playing with shades of neighboring hues, now with contrasting hues. Each one seems absolutely right.
You can't open this book to any page without feeling that the mind and eye that originated it were pretty special. It's more than likely that some of this impression is due to the care of Carol Belanger Grafton, who selected and arranged the plates -- many of the two-page spreads seem to delight in comparing, or mirroring, or contrasting Verneuil's designs.
If you like art nouveau, you'll want this book.
