    3 out of 5 stars okay.......2007-05-03

I think calling her a genius is going a bit far. I've seen much better writing and have read fantasy/science fiction with worlds writen in a much more vivid setting. It's okay for a romance book. I've read this one and the one that came before it. The previous book was horrible! with terribly written characters. This one does a better job of creating a realistic character, but I think Spangler has much more work to do in that department. I cannot stand the contrite behavior of the leading female who doesn't believe anything the man she says loves regardless of everything they have done to support their loyality. At least not until a total stranger tells her give up and go to him. Pleeeese. Spangler's discrptions of the unusual powers are also vague. She gives no foundation into what she is describing.

Sorry, but I'm giving up on this author--there are way better and bigger fish in tge sea that I could spend my time reading.

3 out of 5 stars Lovers Seek Sanctuary in Another Galaxy in 3rd Book in Series .......2006-07-09

SHAMARA by Catherine Spangler is the third in a series of romances set in another time, another galaxy. I thought this was a decent read, but it wasn't as good as the first book in the series.

The hero of SHAMARA is Jarek san Ranul (Nessa's brother), who is now the leader of the Shielders, a race of people being systemically destroyed by the evil Controllers. Jarek has a bounty on his head and has a daring plan to bring his people to Sanctuary - known as Shamara - but he needs an Enhancer to help him.

The heroine, Eirene, is an Enhancer. She's also on the run from her abusive uncle, who intends to marry her off to a Leor commander in order to gain new trade routes. Just when Eirene thinks she's free of all the men in her life, Jarek kidnaps her. Now she has to escape him as well.

I thought Eirene and Jarek were okay characters. On the positive side, they had some chemistry together. On the negative side, Jarek spent too much time apologizing and Eirene spent too much time doubting herself and keeping everything a secret. She got annoying, fast. Especially since all she did is try to escape Jarek over and over, with negative consequences each time.

The characters I really enjoyed were two minor characters: the courtesan Lani and the Leor Commander Gunnar. Now THERE was a couple with fun dialogue, interesting scenes, and hot chemistry. I would have rather read their story, and enjoyed every scene they were in. I even found myself counting pages until their next scene, just cuz they were so good together.

Regarding the plot of SHAMARA, I have to agree with another reviewer that there were way too many coincidences in the story to make it believable. Also, this story suffered from jargon issues. It's set in another galaxy, but characters say things like "okay" and "hey," very American dialogue. Things like this took away from the "realism" of the story.

Anyway, it's an alright read. Entertaining, but not a keeper. If you are interested in this book, however, its series begins with SHIELDER (the best), followed by SHADOWER (which I loathed), and then SHAMARA. SHADOW CROSSING and SHADOW FIRES follow.

5 out of 5 stars Pure fire from Spanger.......2005-05-27

Shamara is the third in the `Shielder series' book by the very talented Catherine Spangler. She started out in Futuristic Romance back when it was still getting its wings and her Shielder books helped define and set the standard for this genre. Spangler gives you George Lucas fantasy Off-World planets, and then proceeds to make you see them through her eyes. Her vivid writing conveys every detail of their world, allows you to experience it But more so, she never forgets the romance. She always gives you very human characters. Not the perfect hero and heroine, but very down to earth...well, very human characters with flaws. It's through these flaws you get the emotions, the involvement that won't let a reader put her stories down.

In Shamara, the third in the series (though they are stand alone and can be read out of order you enjoy them more if you do them in order). On the planet Travern the women are little better than slaves, so it's not surprising when Eirene Kane is told by her greedy uncle she is going to be bartered away as a virgin bride to the powerful Leors. On her planet she has no rights, yet she pleads with her uncle to reconsider her fate. She argues she is s healer. He merely laughs that her virginity was worth more to him. In her `mind-seeing', she learns that she in an Enhancer, and that her future spouse will learn this secret sealing her doom.

The Controllers, the rules of this quadrant, has wiped out the Enhancers, though obviously they missed a few here and there. So Eirene must hide that she is one. Desperate to escape her fate, she knows she must rid herself of her virginity, so she enters a pleasure dome where she meets a Shielder, Jarek san Ranual.

The Controllers have been destroying the Shielder colonies, and Jarek was left for dead. Jarek is determined to prevent The Controllers from destroy more Shielders, but he needs Eirene's help. However, she refuses to admit she is an Enhancer. He believes she is the key to saving the Shielders, but he needs Eirene to trust him. The big stumbling block - Jarek killed her father, a traitor to the Shielders.

Spangler just won a RITA nomination for Shadow Fires, the latest Shielder book, and small wonder. Shamara demonstrates the unbelievable brilliance with which Spangler conjures these far away worlds. It's a powerful, moving book that just doesn't get any better than this.

3 out of 5 stars An okay entry.......2005-03-06

My introduction to this author came from Shadow Fires. I really liked that book and was looking forward to this one. I wouldn't recommend this one (try the library or a friend or used first). It isn't bad, it just is incredibly annoying. Too many coincidences, to many people standing at just the right time to help. Also, The heroine is another whiny, annoying female. She wants freedom, but boo hoo I can't help anyone else. She just takes and takes and people cover up for her. If she wants to be free, then she needs to deal with the consquences of all her actions. True adults don't run from responsiblities. When she gets absolved of her guilt(another coincidence) she suddenly can grow up and take charge of her life. If you read this book look for Lani and Gunnar - their interaction is the only interesting part of this book.

    2 out of 5 stars What A Tiresome Twosome!.......2004-05-03

If you've been reading the author's other Shielder stories, then you can safely give this one a pass-by. The only good thing about it is the small subplot where we find out how Lani and Gunnar of Leor met. For the rest, it's just a tiresome recital of Eirene running away from this person or that planet and/or running away from her past/present, and Jarek tracking her down for the greater good of the Shielder people. Eirene has all of the emotional range of a 13 year old (my apologies to any 13 year olds who are reading this), and Jarek is just so heroic that it's tiresome. Although there's a lot of "action", nothing really ever happens - just a lot of people traipsing back and forth around the same portion galaxy. And please, every humanoid species worships the same god (given that oh-so-original name, "Spirit")? Characters from other stories have bit-part roles, but the main characters are so stereotypically semi-tragic that they become annoying. As to their romance, it's another one of those stories where they go at each other like rabbits in heat but lack the ability to say "I love you" until the last page. By the end of the book, I didn't really care if Eirene lived or died. Don't waste your money on this one.

It's the final day of the season for the annual Punktown Fair and excitement is high. For the couple in charge, Del and Sophi Kahn, it's a bittersweet day of transition. Little do they realize the trials they will face and how severely this one day will test their relationship. In fact, closing day seems to be a catalyst for many Punktown residents; drawing them in, stirring them up and letting them loose on each other. This roller coaster tale builds to a peak of expectation then plummets, twisting and turning, a breathtaking juggernaut to the final pages with plenty of screams and giggles along the way.

Jeffrey Thomas first seduced readers to the world of Punktown through a short story collection of the same name, bending time and technology to create a futuristic world which felt more real than our own. Everybody Scream! continues the seduction with characters every bit as vibrant only this time each person's story collides with the others in a dizzying thrill-ride of a novel. 5 out of 5 stars Everybody loves a carnival, especially one in Punktown..........2005-04-21

Fans of Jeffrey Thomas's 'Punktown' are going to love this full novel of Punktown's carnival adventure, but even those who have never journeyed to Punktown should enjoy this alien infested midway within Thomas's dreamy landscape of the planet Paxton, and the city of Punktown.

Overflowing with a wide variety of characters, 'Everybody Scream' still narrows most of its focus on Sophi and Del Kahn, owners and operators of Paxton's annual Carnival, a free-for-all of rides, amusement, and murders. Central to its theme are Mitch Garnet, the Carnival's security chief, Pearl Mason, a singer with a mutant body, and Hector Tomas, a Theta Researcher who has found out the truth behind the multiple dimensions.

I am a fan of strange worlds, mutated bodies, oddly imaginative aliens, and a good carnival. 'Everybody Scream' delivers on each of these twisted needs of mine, along with a lot of action on the last day of the carnival's season, plus a sizzling finale that keeps you reading right up to the last page.

Worlds collide across dimensions, drugs are bought and sold, corruption seethes underfoot, and people's daily lives float by as you immerse yourself in Thomas's Punktown world. Thomas does use his strange platform to put out some messages on political issues such as Animal Testing and Animal Rights, but the lessons are not long or tyrannical, more thought-provoking, so if you hold a different view just skip the paragraph and enjoy the book.

Thomas is a talented writer that is definitely worth the attention, so don't forget to pick up the anthologies Punktown and Punktown Third Eye, along with the upcoming Punktown Shades Of Gray. Strange worlds and strange beings, it doesn't get any better than this.

Take an extra minute to note the fantastic artwork on the cover by David A. Magitis, a very talented artist in my opinion. Enjoy!

This is really less a scathing indictment of Pat Robertson than it is of fundamentalism in general. Mr. Straub is actually still a Christian, although of an altogether different bent than what he once was. With fundamentalism, it becomes apparent how Robertson and those at CBN saw everything as an "us/them" issue, where they were always believed to be in the right. The anecdotes of CBN staffers leaving tracts in the homes of "unsaved" Catholics or with everyone from passers-by to toll-both attendants were telling. When one believes they're always in the right, they'll justify anything. Look at Pat's "Diamond Mine" ventures with Mobutu Sese Seko (...).

Overall a very quick and informative read.

5 out of 5 stars A Jouney From Raucous Certitude To Enlightened Confusion.......2003-04-06

I couldn't help but to be moved when I read this book. I was once a conservative Christian, and I cringe when I remember how I once defended people like Robertson. Fortunately, this period of my life was confined to my early teens, and by nineteen I had abandoned my belief in Christianity. I suppose that I now have a "won't get fooled again" attitude towards religion in general and Christianity in particular.

But, as this book shows, it can happen to anyone. The author was once caught in the fundamentalist quagmire. His formerly agnostic wife is apparently still a Robertson employee. Even Bob Dylan became a pulpit-basher for a while. It can truly happen to anyone.

Salvation For Sale allows us to see the inside of Robertson's fundamentalist multimedia empire. As would be expected, Robertson rules his fiefdom with an iron hand and twitching paranoia. Any setback is attributed to the Devil and his satanic henchmen (i.e. liberals). The Bible is the literal word of God and must be obeyed to the letter; unless, of course, you're speaking of those parts about turning the other cheek. Like nearly all of his tele-evangalist contemporaries, Robertson is a militant who sees Satanic conspiracy in everything. And, unlike his religion's namesake, Robertson seems to feel no moral conflict as the financial elite (to which he belongs) hoard the wealth and the poor scrape by. After all, social programs create a dependent society and are the work of the Devil.

Salvation For Sale doesn't dwell entirely on Robertson, however. A good part of the book deals with Straub's own questions and conflicting emotions with his faith and beliefs. He no longer adheres to literal interpretations of the Bible, and he apparently no longer believes in Hell or divine retribution. Like most of us, he accepts that life doesn't consist of black-and-white certainty. It's incredibly confusing and more rewarding if you accept it as such.

                  4 out of 5 stars A Tragedy.......2001-04-25

I read Salvation for Sale while trying to understand why in the world a missionary with whom I was working had such a low opinion of Pat Robertson. Her husband had been murdered in the Children's Home her husband founded and she alleged three of Pat Robertson's Middle Television employees were responsible for instigating her husband's murder. I thought pain was clouding her perception of Pat Robertson, of whom she was highly critical but I had never researched his work, ministry etc. until compelled to do so. That led me to write Call to Courage! a book about my own conclusions. My perceptions are different than Gerald Straub's as mine are Biblical evaluations but they are no less critical. I sympatized with Gerald Straub's struggles to make sense out of his experience. Few things in life are more unsettling than a major spiritual upheavel.

4 out of 5 stars Update Takes No Prisoners.......2000-01-20

I can add very little to the long review below, and the shorter all-caps review had a good point in that the more moderate and decent religions don't seem to attract many converts.

The main part of the book is the author's attempt to come to grips with his own experience and conversions. However, the paperback edition was released with an update in which the author refuses to mince words about Pat Robertson. The author discovered a recording of Pat Robertson declaiming with relish over the holocaust to come in 1982. The author was outraged not only at Robertson for the speech, but also at himself for having listened to the speech years earlier without noticing anything wrong.

Now, it would be wonderful if more people who listen to talk about apocolypse and mass slaughter with joyous rapture and thrills would suddenly wake up and wonder with horror what they were thinking. Also, note that Robertson is a False Prophet.

3 out of 5 stars DECENT BOOK, MISLEADING TITLE.......1998-09-23

THE ODD THING ABOUT THIS BOOK IS THERE'S VERY LITTLE DISCUSSION OF FINANCES AT ALL. HIS OWN PERSONAL STORY IS A BIT BORING BUT HIS INSIGHTS ARE WORTH READING ABOUT. HIS CONVERSION FROM RELIGION TO SECULAR HUMANISM IS A GOOD READ ESPECIALLY FOR EXCULT MEMBERS. OF COURSE IT IS WORTH NOTING HERE THAT THE " CIVILISED RELIGIONS" EG. EPISCOPALIANS, REFORM JEWS , ETC., DON'T SEEM ABLE TO ATTRACT A PARTICULARLY BIG FLOCK, OR A COMMITED ONE FOR THAT MATTER. NJUST SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT.

Straub's account has some major problems. It's not written in any kind of chronological order: his constant skipping forward and backward in time robs his story of continuity. His perpetual digressions are even more irritating. After starting a topic, he feels compelled to explain his version of Christianity, whether or not it's related to the topic. Too often, he doesn't finish a story that he starts.

Straub says some things about Robertson that need saying, but removing the fluff would cut the book by about 3/4 and cost it nothing. Maybe he didn't have enough experiences at CBN to complete an entire book, so he had to pad it. Straub speaks too often in generalities, and rarely names names. He should have hired a ghostwriter. His book contains lots of typos, too.

Physical descriptions of "god" by two other evangelists were mildly amusing: twice the size of a man according to Percy Collett, while Morris Cerullo imagined a six-foot-high flaming ball with feet the same size as Cerullo's. This might make an interesting project - collect and publish descriptions from various evangelists. I bet no two of them match.

The book is far more about Straub than Robertson, and should not have been promoted otherwise. A good Robertson expose could have been interesting; Straub's life story isn't. He introduces the section describing his "conversion" by saying, "The best way to expose CBN is to expose myself." There's already way too much of himself and not enough CBN here.

I'd hoped to add this book to my rogue's shelf of Christians, but I doubt that I'll even keep it. Surely, someone has written a better book about Robertson.

                    W. Tom Miller The Big Book of Toy Airplanes is the most comprehensive guide on the subject ever published, covering cast iron, diecast, and pressed steel toy airplanes, as well as desk andpresentation, comic character, and space models. In recent years, the collecting of toy planes has become popular with many who are enthralled with aviation. This book will assist both the collector and the toy dealer in identifying specific toy planes that are commonly found at collectible shops and toy shows. Arranged alphabetically by manufacturer's name, the book is easy to use. Not only are there planes featured according to the material from which they are constructed, but also shown are those miniature airplanes that have served as desk ornaments or ashtrays. Others are models of the real airplanes and were built for airlines or military forces and are displayed in the offices of airplane manufacturers.

                    Book Description

Whether in a Garden Journal or on a Golden Age Card, images of flowers and the natural world make everything pretty. And these pictures, with their classic beauty, are the loveliest of all. Cherubic children, right out of the Victorian age, sit sweetly in their gardens. Bouquets of pansies, a big sunflower, and gathered primroses decorate vintage labels. A smiling angel stands by a basket filled with wildflowers. Use them in your own creative way, or try any of the charming ideas from the gallery of projects.

5 out of 5 stars An old favorite.......2006-09-11

This is an old favorite book of mine. I am an ikea enthusiast and so I love it and recognise alot of the furnishings and accesories(many from over the years). There are also furnishings etc that are not ikea but no house should be soley furnished from one store! Unlike other reviewers I feel that many of the looks can be adapted and emulated using the current in store stock that Ikea carry. The info contained isn't bad either. This book is a little beauty.

2 out of 5 stars Handsome but useless.......2002-01-04

I like IKEA stores very much, but this book is useless. Nice settings, fun furniture, but it's basically a catalog. And not everything you see is still available from IKEA, so it isn't even a very reliable catalog at that.

1 out of 5 stars They don't tell you WHICH furniture comes from IKEA.......2001-03-20

This is a very nice design book with beautiful photographs but the author leaves out some very important information. He/She does not indicate WHICH pieces come from IKEA. Looking through the photos, I'd say the majority of the furniture does NOT come from IKEA. It was nice to look at but IKEA's in-house publication called Space magazine does a lot better job.

5 out of 5 stars Finally! Just what I was looking for!.......2000-03-10

This book is ideal for anyone looking for fresh and creative ideas in a modern/contemporary style. Ideas for every room in the house accompanied with beautiful photographs and helpful text. Design focuses on form, function, light, and environmental soundness. This is just what the doctor ordered if the typical traditional/classic and country/cozy aren't your style. Works great for people moving into their first apt./house too- good, practical, easy to imitate ideas (and Ikea furnishings that are easy on your budget!).

5 out of 5 stars full of great style and fresh ideas.......1999-09-14

I have a ton of design books, but this is one of my favorites. The style is comfortable and affordable, but looks fabulous with very little effort. Great book for any apartment dweller, or anyone who doesn't want to live in traditional-style hell.

I have read some of the reviews here and actually wonder if they read this book or are just commenting on the case in general. Stumbo does an excellent job of giving both sides of the story, whether Dan is still alive or not. Neither one is made out to be a Saint. Betty was raised to be a perfect wife and mother, with very little support or encouragement from her family that she could do anything else. To be dumped for a younger woman as your youth is slipping away could be devastating to ANY woman. Just as Dan and Betty had reached the pinnacle of their lives and should have been enjoying the fruits of all their labors, Dan changed partners. Betty definitely behaved in an obsessive and calculating manner, unable to "let go" and move on, even though she eventually found another partner. This was her downfall. On the other hand, Dan used his legal maneuvers to taunt Betty and to save himself some money, making it his (literally) fatal mistake. Stumbo pulls no punches; by the end of the book, one is left with a sad feeling for the children who have gone through hell and practically lost both parents, as well as Betty, who has pretty much drifted into a state of denial while trying to recreate a perfect world in prison. It will be interesting to see what happens when her parole comes due.

Bella Stumbo has done an excellent job of researching the book as well as putting it together in a riveting tale.

This book is difficult to put down. It is very well-researched and detailed....you will almost feel what it was like to BE Betty Broderick going through infidelity, public shame and humiliation, while at the same time losing custody of her children and access to all the money she helped Dan earn. I wouldn't say this is a pro-Betty book but Stumbo, being the good reporter that she was, sets out to tell the story from both sides. Neither Dan, Linda or Betty will come out on top in this book, and that is what makes this story so fascinating.

                              5 out of 5 stars Where's Bella's next book?.......2007-04-10

I loved this book. Well-written and thoroughly researched this is a stay up all night reading book. It is still one of the classics of the genre for me.
I was fascinated by the Broderick case and like many here disliked how Betty was portrayed as the "wronged woman" etc. Stumbo's book does portray Betty sympathetically but does not skew the facts. She shows Betty being nasty to her children, money-obsessed and, ultimately, cold blooded. For me, Stumbo portrayed a classic folie a deux - two people who should never have been married to each other trying endlessly to bend the other to their will.
Dan did play mind games with Betty, but Betty gave as good as she got. The reviewer here who suggested that Betty may be have BPD raises an interesting idea and one that makes a great deal of sense to me. Betty's endless cries of victimization, her cruelties to her own children, etc. certainly fit the bill.
The Broderick story is a tragedy with no heroes or heroines.
With the talent clearly on display in this book, where is Bella Stumbo's next book?

                              5 out of 5 stars Excellent read.......2007-01-05

This is the kind of book that is hard to put down. Dan and Linda were both smart enough to realize that if you keeping poking something with a sharp stick, you're eventually gonna get an explosive reaction. Obviously, they underestimated the reaction.

They asked for it and asked for it and asked for it. They finally got it.

A disillusioned Betty commits a crime of passion showing little compassion. Her irreverent actions negate her parochial background. Nothing but burnt offerings pays homage to the memory of her victims.

You'll need to speak with Betty yourself, and yes, she's willing to talk but I think Bella Stumbo did a very fantastic job of telling the story from both sides.

Yes, I had to make a judgement call on the "Dan and Linda" side. They are both dead.

If you are interested in this case, get a copy and read the story. If you are REALLY interested, drop Betty a line. She'll probably write you back.

If Betty could not satisfy Dan perhaps she had the problem. What were Dan's needs? That should have been her question. Actions speak louder than words and Betty's actions were a direct result of dysfunctional reasoning. I feel for their family and all touched by the ultimate devastating incident.

At first glance, the average person might be able to relate to the Brodericks with their wealth and social position. However, this book deals with so many universal themes: The inequity in divorce laws, parents who lash out in anger at each other and children caught in the middle. This is such a sad story for everyone involved, especially the Broderick children, who were not only victims of their parents anger, and of course, the murders, but also victims of a mother who refuses to take any responsibility for the pain she has brought to so many people. The author did an excellent job of telling this story and tying all the pieces together. I pray that the Kolkena and Broderick families find some peace of mind.

Loved this book! It's very easy to see how Betty Broderick was driven to kill her husband and his new "girl" , the conniving younger and prettier "upgrade". The steps leading up to this murder in cold blood are very thoroughly examined; and honestly both Dan and Linda could have avoided this bitter and violent end if that hadn't provoked and bullied a mad woman to the point of murderous frenzy.Yes, Betty Broderick was a foul mouthed embodiment of a hag who was "over the hill" and unwilling to let go of the past, and shame on her for helping to create the sociopathic pig of a husband who ends up taking her to the cleaners and mentally abusing her.Betty cannot be absolved of her participation and responsibility , she definetly killed two people and then went "oops", but the logic of the story is what makes this book so good, I was engaged from page one.
Most women will not have to face such an egomaniacal greedy monster of a husband as Dan Broderick, but this worst case scenario should be a cautionary tale to any woman of any social strata who signs up for the housewife role and is not protected legally in the instance of a divorce.

4 out of 5 stars "Anger is a weapon only to your opponent".......2003-02-08

While I can certainly understand Betty Broderick's rage and feeling of betrayal upon being told that she was being dumped, she also, as this book makes clear, was her own very worst enemy in a thousand and one ways. It wasn't her husband's evil machinations that prevented her getting a lawyer so much as her own rapidly-earned reputation as an impossible client; it wasn't her husband's evil machinations that got custody awarded to him as much as her own increasingly insane behavior.

For an interesting exercise, reverse the genders in this story, and try to convince yourself that "Billy" Broderick, after killing his high-flying ex-wife and her new toyboy in their bed in their house, would escape the death penalty. A lot of women, I've noticed, are ardent feminists until the subject of "equal punishment for equal crimes" comes up---at that point they're as old-fashioned as it gets.

The ones I really felt for were the kids, and, to a lesser extent, Linda Kokelna, the forgotten victim.

That morning I was as unaware as the rest of the world before the hijacked planes dropped out of a clear blue sky and hit their targets, the north tower first, then the south tower. In Washington, D.C., they flew across the Potomac and hit the Pentagon. The fourth plane was believed to be headed for the White House. Instead, Todd Bingham and a group of passengers overthrew the hijackers and the plane crashed into the Pennsylvania countryside.Through the dark days we would watch and mourn the dead, pray for the wounded, and go after the terrorists in Afghanistan. We would hear the ancient battle cry that sounded after the sinking of the Maine, the Lusitania, and the ships docked at Pearl Harbor. Many of us could do nothing more than watch the events unfold. We are told to forgive as preached in our churches, but for many forgiveness was a long time coming. Forgiveness is not as easy to do as we are taught, and in many cases forgiveness is never sought, asked for, or even given. I thought about my own ground zero as it happened on May 15, 1997, and during the first weeks of September 2003 I had a dream, and the book was conceived. This is the story of the D.C. Crier.

                                        Book Description

Louis Nowra is an acclaimed playwright, novelist and screenwriter.

In this funny, razor's edge memoir, he looks back at a fractured family: a beautiful and demanding mother, whose standards could and would never be met; a father in love with long-distance; a mad grandmother; a hideous head accident; and a childhood filled with strangeness and obsessions.

A moving and wonderfully original evocation of an unconventional boyhood, of growing up believing that aliens might just walk among us, and of the realization that to be normal is harder than you think.

I have seen and continue to see this type of behavior in marriages emanating from either spouse. I am not referring to the act of consummate violence such as this book chronicles but to circumstances that can lead up to it. They are happily married, have children, live comfortably and one day it is all over. It may be the husband or the wife but one spouse decides that it is time for a change. One spouse may be cheating or not. It really doesn't matter. It turns the world upside-down. What brings a person to make such a traumatic decision? I do not believe that any one person knows for sure. Who knows what goes on inside a household or behind closed bedroom doors? In a relationship does any one person know what is going on in the mind of the other? What it all comes down to is impressions. These impressions can be based on reality or imagination. It is all a matter of how well a person interprets the facts and what those facts mean to that person. It's sort of like a psychiatrist with a patient who comes in with an emergency. A broken nail can be an emergency to some patients. Author Stumbo is obviously biased to Betty's unique denouement to a relationship that Betty has envisioned through some delusion of reality. It seemed like Betty really needed this relationship and the children for her own stability. I believe she thrived and survived on a role of self-imposed pity because it filled some void in her psyche. This books made me wonder about the meaning of love. I don't believe that Betty really loved her children or her husband. She just went through the motions because she needed that void filled in her life. There were obviously things that Dan needed in his life. Dan was a smart guy. I think he eventually saw the physiological makeup of his wife. She was sick and she needed help. How many people in a relationship really understand when their partner needs professional help? Not many do. I think Dan just took the quickest and easiest and most accessible out there was - Linda Kolkena. Unfortunately it is the children that suffer the most. However, my main contention about this book is that Linda Kolkena was just as much a human being as Betty Broderick is. Dan Broderick was just as much a human being as Betty Broderick is. They both had a right to live their own lives. Now Linda and Dan are dead. Betty never manifested any symptoms of psychosis. If a person is truly psychotic I do not believe they are responsible for their actions. That's my personal belief. Betty knew perfectly well what she was doing. There are tens of thousands of male and female Betty Brodericks out there. My advice to this author is to go hang out in some singles bars from which you will hear horror story upon horror story. Like Tarzan said to Jane: It's a real jungle out there. People fall every day but they pick themselves up and grab hold of the next vine. And come to think of it Tarzan never did like guns in his jungle.
