Book Description

With this irresistibly fresh debut about a set of twins in their first year of college in Ireland, Julian Gough ("Roddy Doyle in an extremely good mood." —The Washington Post Book World) has established himself as Ireland's most delightful new voice in fiction.
Juno and Juliet Taylor are both beautiful blondes, but Juliet is convinced that Juno is the more beautiful, as well as the more intelligent, charming, worldly, and wise. Yet neither feels any sense of rivalry, which is good, given that their freshman year turns out to be more than either could handle alone. Juno has an erratic artist for a boyfriend and is stalked by a pervert who sends anonymous letters. And Juliet is in love with her grad-student tutor, who is stymied by her youth and preoccupied with his dying father. Hilarious and tender, ribald and smart, Juno & Juliet is a refreshing romp with two sisters whose love and devotion are infectious.

3 out of 5 stars Meandering Yet Pleasant.......2005-12-08

This is a nice coming-of-age tale of two attractive identical twins who attend their freshman year of university. They fall for boys, are gawked at by hordes of other boys, and the eventually make it through.

There is a sadness that permeates the book, so that an overall cute and idyllic experience is tempered with a Knowles-ish realism. This is not a deep story, and the plot just sort of wanders into a mostly happy ending. A nice read, but nothing essential.

5 out of 5 stars smart and sweet.......2004-05-12

I adored this book. The cover is what got me to pick it up, and once I started reading, I had a hard time putting it down. Juliet is charming and sweet and sharp, and her fears and doubts are honest and endearing; she's an ideal narrator for a coming-of-age story and tale of two sisters.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2003-11-27

I liked his band and he seems like an interesting guy but this was frankly a disappointing read. Sarcasm abounds in this NUI Galway adventure. The characters were not at all believable from the very start when they left their native Tipperary. The city of Galway and the university are both very unreal places. This book lacks soul. It maybe had a good idea once but ended up trampling on itself in order to get it finished.

4 out of 5 stars Literary twins.......2003-03-26

The description on the jacket of Juno and Juliet was what prompted me to read it: "Juno and Juliet Taylor are beautiful Irish twins headed off to Galway for college." For years I've been asked questions about being an identical twin. Normal people seem to be insatiably curious about twins, and those that write about twins pretty much always mess it up. One of pleasant surprises of Juno and Juliet is how much the author does get correct.

Juno and Juliet is propelled forward by Juliet's narrative. She's the "less pretty" and more acerbic and sarcastic twin, and she describes the small problems that are always faced in the first year of college. In terms of action, not much happens until the very end. Everything is driven by Juliet's thoughts on the people and events that surround her. This book is more than just a character development, but has even less suspense than a Jane Austen novel. The pleasure comes from Juliet's voice as the year unfolds. The author has created a character who feels very real, someone who is a thinking person without giving up other parts of her personality such as humor and wit, which seems to happen far too often in other books.

The weakest part of the book is the final discovery and fight at the end, where a one-dimensional character doesn't develop into anything more. It's surprising considering how well the author describes even the smaller supporting characters, and is somewhat jarring. But for me, Juliet more than makes up for it. Her interactions with Juno, and thoughts afterwards, are some of the best writing about twins that I've ever come across. The author understands that twins are two separate people. Juliet doesn't always understand Juno's actions. Needless to say, they also can't communicate telepathically.

This book is not lighthearted, but it is funny and uplifting enough in parts that it also isn't heavy. I didn't think that it was pretensious given that the narrator is only eighteen, and obviously has some teen angst to work through. I also am not sure what one of the reviewers is complaining about when she says that the author missed some obvious "female functions". What this book really describes is a real story about growing up, which doesn't stop when the school year ends. We know that Juno and Juliet's growth continues past where we leave them. And as an added bonus, people can now feel what it's like to have a twin.

5 out of 5 stars For anyone who's gone to school & found themselves in love........2003-01-08

Such a lovely book! Delicate and extremely powerful for such a small little package. Reminds me a lot of Gail Tsukiyama's work, with a rather spartan literary style that just blows you away. I can't wait to read more!

    CHAPTER 1

    18th October

Nine days before the Grand Jury met in an upstairs office at Champollion Precinct, Ashraf Bey sat through a warm Iskandryian evening, bombed out of his skull, at a pavement table outside Le Trianon, drinking cappuccino and listening to DJ Avatar wreak havoc on the words of a Greek philosopher.

The afternoon call to prayer had finished echoing from the mosque on Boulevard Saad Zaghloul and the bells from l'Eglise Copte had yet to begin. If it hadn't been for a sense of dread hanging over El Iskandryia, this could have been a Monday in October like any other.

Horse-drawn caliches, their brasses shined and wheel bosses polished, rumbled up the Corniche, from the fat seawall known as the Silsileh all the way north to Fort Qaitbey, where the ancient Pharos lighthouse once stood.

And at both ends of the sweeping Corniche, at Silsileh in the shadow of Iskandryia's famous library, and at Fort Qaitbey, groups of tourists watched as fishermen set hooks or mended and untangled nets, waiting for the evening tide.

It was a tourist who'd taken the taxi that stopped outside Le Trianon, with its window down and sound system up too loud, giving Raf the chance to hear the city's favourite DJ one more time.

"And remember . . ." Avatar's voice was street raw. "Rust never sleeps. Coming at you from the wrong side of those tracks, this for the Daddy, the Don . . ."

Most of Raf's officers thought DJ Avatar came up with SpitNoWhere on his own; if they thought at all, which Raf considered unlikely. So they happily stamped the corridors at Police HQ, humming along, not knowing that the unchopped original went, "In a rich man's house, there's nowhere to spit but his face."

Raf hadn't known that, at least not until recently, but the fox in his head did. And while the fox couldn't say why, the General's aide de camp had just delivered to Raf an engraving of hell, inscribed with the words, "At its centre hell is not hot." It had at least been able to identify the picture as late Victorian, unquestionably by Gustave Dore . . .

". . . ou know," said the fox, before all this happened. ". . . ese things, they occur."

The fox had a grin like the Cheshire cat, except that no cat ever owned so many teeth or carried its tail wrapped up round its shoulders like a stole. Come to that, few cats took afternoon tea at Le Trianon.

These things could have been Raf becoming Chief of Detectives by default, or his recent refusal to marry the daughter of a billionaire.

"Why?" Raf asked. "Why do they occur?"

    But the fox didn't answer.

Sighing, Raf took a gulp of cold cappuccino to wash away the taste of cheap speed and fixed his gaze on the pedestrians who streamed past his cafe table, separated from the terrace where he sat by a silk rope and the assiduous attention of two bodyguards.

The only pedestrians to meet Raf's stare were those, mainly tourists, who didn't realize who he was. They just saw a blond young man in dark glasses, wearing an oddly old-fashioned suit, the kind with a high collar.

"Come on," said Raf, searching inside his head. "You can tell me."

He ignored his two guards, who looked at each other, then hurriedly looked away. Raf didn't doubt that they could see tears trickling from under his glasses, but he didn't much care either.

    The fox was saying good-bye.

The beast had been dying for years. Its abilities limited by memory conflicts, failed backup and the fact that, these days, the animal could only feed on neon light.

Once Tiri had been state of the art. Feeding on daylight, infrared and ultraviolet, or so it told Raf. White light, black light--back then anything went. The fox sharpened Raf's reflexes, steadied his ne

3 out of 5 stars Near-Future SF in an Exotic Setting.......2006-02-05

This is the second book of Grimwood's Arabesk series. Do not read this if you have not read the first one, "Pashazade." While it may be theoretically possible to understand everything that has gone on and the relationships between the characters from just this book, I wouldn't recommend trying it.

Ashraf Bey is an unlikely man to whom unlikely things happen. He acts as a political wildcard and detective in the slightly alternate future version of Alexandria, here called El Iskandriya. His relationships with his nine year old niece Hani and Zara, the beautiful daughter of a gangster industrialist, are complex to say the least.

This book fleshes out more of the relationships and backgrounds of the major characters, while also obliquely illuminating the political situation that Iskandriya finds itself in. We learn little more about Asraf's background, but more about how he chooses to act now.

The best thing about these books is the air of the exotic and the illustration of a place very, very different from our own, even if the time is very close to ours. This is especially true in the way that Grimwood depicts the reality of child "warriors" in the armies that fight the wars in Africa. He gives us an up close and personal portrayal of the kind of life these conscripted children lead, and it is sobering.

This is not a light book. The plot is confusing and sometimes it seems that there is much, much more going on behind the scenes than Grimwood chooses to show us. However, the characters and the setting are definite strengths and keep one hooked throughout the entire novel. I recommend this, assuming you have read the first book, and I look forward myself to reading the final book in the trilogy, "Felaheen."

5 out of 5 stars strong speculative fiction.......2005-08-31

His Excellency Pashazade Ashraf "Raf" Bey has been selected as the detective chief of El Iskandryia at a time when the Ottoman Empire is divided between religious fundaments and secular nationalists. However, Bey tries not to concern himself at the moment with extremists from either side though he knows not to ignore danger that might follow from zealots. Instead his focus is a brutal serial killer who mutilates his victims.

Clues point towards businessman Hamzah, owner of Hamzah Enterprises. Complicating the case for Raf is that he falling in love with Zara, the daughter of his prime suspect starting from the moment she gave a coat to his ward Hani. However, while struggling with an investigation that increasingly looks like he will arrest the man who he would like as his father-in-law, Raf also must deal with assassinations, explosions and abductions terrorizing the residents of El Isk.

EFFENDI, the sequel to the delightful police procedural PASHAZADE is quite different in plot design as the who-done-it shares billing with terrorism and political and religious intrigue. The key to why this novel and its predecessor are worth reading lies in Jon Courtenay Grimwood's ability to paint a realistic futurist alternate universe in which the Ottoman Empire is the superpower as it has been for centuries. Raf is a terrific protagonist struggling with his personal life interacting negatively on his official duties. With cross genre appeal, EFFENDI is a strong work of speculative fiction.

    4 out of 5 stars Well Crafted.......2005-08-03

It is a world where no one blinks if the Chief of Detectives does drugs in public. It is a world where children are engaged in guerilla warfare. It is a world where America doesn't pull all the strings. It is a world that is like a hall of mirrors; a fun house without the fun; a carnival where the roller coaster drops endlessly down, down, down. Grimwood lets the reader into this world one step at a time, with blinders on. Facts are revealed slowly, and sometimes out of sequence, creating an off-kilter feeling. I've never read anything quite like it.

Chief of Detectives, Ashraf Bey, finds that his knowledge of both sides of the law is essential to performing his duties. His unorthodox methods of crime solving and his personal habits are a source of amused consternation for his superior, General Pasha. Pasha tells him, "...as Chief you have three main problems. The first is personal. The way life works is public virtue, private vice. You keep doing it the wrong way round." Even the corrupt General recognizes the way things should work; even if he, too, fails to follow the law.

Bey's one anchor, and my favorite character in this otherwise dark world, is his niece, Hani. Her sense of humor allows us to see another side of Ashraf Bey. Precocious, intelligent and clairvoyant Hani assists her Uncle in surprising ways as he works to discover who is murdering female tourists.

Although this book is the second in a series, it is easily read as a stand alone book. While not to my taste, this novel is well crafted and is recommended for anyone who likes cyberpunk, speculative fiction or alternative histories.

How do great houses come to be? Here are the stories of 10 extraordinary homes and their creation. From London architect Sir John Soane's postneoclassical 18th-century abode--and his awareness of light as an element of design--to writer Curzio Malaparte's spectacular-yet-austere 1930s villa, perched atop a rocky spur in Capri, Architects' Dream Houses ably illustrates the influences that led to the emergence of modernism. Included are such notable homes as William Morris and Philip Webb's Red House, Charles Rennie Mackintosh's Hill House, Sir Edwin Lutyen's Mallet House, Victor Horta's house and studio, Antionio Gaudi's Guell Palace, Emmanuel Pontremoli's Greek villa for Theodore Reinach, and the interiors of writer Pierre Loti's home. This is an exquisitely photographed and splendidly written book.

4 out of 5 stars Inspiring and thought-provoking.......2003-01-08

Ted Loder is the best kind of preacher ... one who is not obviously preaching. His storytelling is magnificent and his message is inspiring. For those who have lost faith in the whole faith industry, "The Haunt of Grace" should provide some hope, not just of a higher presence, but that we can find inspiration in common things around us.

            5 out of 5 stars Sweaty Praise.......2003-01-05

Ted Loder is a master storyteller and a wise preacher whose understanding of the human situation, and the divine response to it/us, is filled with nuance, ambiguity, blood, sweat, tears, laughter and love. You don't just read this book, you imbibe it and come away nourished and changed and ready for the long haul. I can't think of a better way to start the new year.

5 out of 5 stars Visionary, Creative and Down-to-Earth.......2002-12-06

Whenever I read Ted Loder's writing, whether it's Guerillas of Grace, My Heart in My Mouth or The Haunt of Grace, my experience is consistent. Feelings I am unable to express, experiences I cannot articulate and nebulous connections which I cannot explain in a coherent way are, all of a sudden, made plain. As I read, I have on occasion, said out loud, "Yes, that's what I mean, that's what I feel." What a relief to know that someone can capture that inarticulated part of my life!

            5 out of 5 stars A Leaping , Haunting Book.......2002-12-01

This is a leaping book; it leaps out and grabs you--even if you don't have a sermon-bone in your body. The movies are here: "Saving Private Ryan," "Dead Man Walking"; the poets: James Dickey, Emily Dickinson, W. H. Auden; the musicians: Miles Davis, Wynton Marsalis; the theologians: H. Richard Niebuhr, William Coffin; the physicists, anthropologists, the New York "Times" columnists, the "Christian Century" and "New Yorker" authors. Ted Loder goes a'leaping with each of these as he explores the mysteries of love, of faith, and, particularly, of grace. Much of the book is poetry, leaping with allusions, metaphors and similes (God tattooing our makeshift lives, gratitude coming through the back door, jazz imitating God, people in buzzard flops). This is not another one of those self-help books nor is it a book replete with answers. Rather it poses life-baffling challenges in ways that will stop you in your reading tracks to ponder Loder's responses. As he writes in his introduction, "In every case, these responses reflect my belief that the world of faith, or religion, or the Bible is not separable from the world of our present experience, the world of science, reason, practicality, art, invention, day-to-day commerce--what is commonly referred to as the 'real world.'" After the leaping, the book will haunt you for a long time.

5 out of 5 stars Grace in the Common Things.......2002-11-30

The Rev. Ted Loder, more than anyone I know, is able to take common things of life, well-worn clichés and oft told stories from the Bible, and uncover in them a new nugget of truth, a mother lode of meaning which he mines for surprising insights into the presence and grace of God. In one of his essays he wove the common phrase, "In your face," into the words in the movie, Dead Man Walking, spoken by Sister Helen Prejean, "I'll be the face of love for you," to the terrified convicted murderer, Matthew Poncelot as he is about to be executed, and hung them on the frame of the apostle Paul's prompting us to let the light of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ shine in our hearts. Rev. Loder concluded: "The gospel is God saying, `I am the face of love for you. Whoever you are, I am with you. Wherever your are, I am there in love for you in every face you see, in the face of creation itself.'"
This book gave me the adult counter part of delight I experienced as a child when I opened the doors of the dates on the Advent Calendar to find the wonderful miniature scenes which were depicted behind the dates. In each chapter in the book, indeed, in paragraph after paragraph. Ted Loder opens doors on a beautiful metaphor or poem or scene that enlightens a current situation with the presence of God, the haunt of the grace. I find this book an excellent read during my time of devotions.

            5 out of 5 stars great book!.......2004-02-11

this is the American version of the British Montignac Provencale cookbook! I found this out the hard way, as i purchased both books online here.

I think a note should be added that both books contain the exact same recipes. The only difference is that in this book they work with Ounces instead of metric units.

Now if you care for pictures in a book, get the UK one, though you'll have to deal with the metric conversions, but if the recipes suffice, then this book is a great choice.

            5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Brilliant!.......2002-02-28

This is a book that read with his "Eat Yourself Slim" book, will change your life. This is NOT a diet but a new way to enjoy what we all love .. EATING! Yes eating, and losing weight!
Love the recipes, need to be adapted for the Australian ingredients, but basic principles are still there!
Congratulations Michel! You have changed our lives!

3 out of 5 stars If you like Provence cooking, this book is for you........2001-04-06

Some really good recipes to expand your mind and palate. There are an abundance of seafood and meat recipes in this book. Also, there is a 3 month menu planner than can help you get some variety in your eating. I would bet there are at least 10 recipes that you will enjoy very much.

I consider this book a three dimensional scrapbook of life from the late 1950s to the present as seen through pop culture, fashion, music, entertainment and of course, fashion dolls. While Barbie doll was the undisputed "Queen of the Prom" other dolls portrayed a lifestyle that will never be forgotten. Relive the past or greet it for the first time! Enjoy! A. Glenn Mandeville

Glen's knowledge of Barbie and other fashion dolls is superb! This book includes otherwise rare information on all the non-Barbie fashion dolls as well, such as Kenner's Darci, Hasbro's Jem, Creata Lace, the Littlechap family, Tressy, and many more.

This book is priceless if you are interested in more than just Barbie . . . and his Barbie information is also great. This book has it all!

"When you need to 'pull a rabbit out of your hat,' pull your Sourcebook off the shelf." -Lesley Weston, costume shop head, Metropolitan Opera Now published on a biannual basis, this is the reference book so essential that, according to set designer Robin Wagner, "Broadway couldn't function without it!" Packed with more than 5000 company entries from across the country, The Entertainment Sourcebook is an insider's guide to finding any item imaginable, be it a Civil War sabre, an animal to rent, a Greek fisherman's hat, authentic Amish clothing, 19th-century chandeliers, or human skulls. Whether you need African imported goods, china, crystal and glassware, or plumbing supplies and fixtures, this book includes the resources to find them. In addition to hundreds of pages of products and services listings organized by category, this edition features a company index, a product index, and appendices that include Web resources, support services, professional organizations, and more. Known in the industry simply as "The Green Book," The Entertainment Sourcebook 2007 is useful for anyone planning an event, even a wedding, and it's indispensable for those who work in theatre, film, television, opera and print. Take it from Laura Koch, prop mistress for The Producers, "If you can't find it in this book, you don't need it in your show."

                    Product Description

This study covers the latent demand outlook for unpainted and finished ready-to-assemble wood home entertainment centers sold in kits excluding custom furniture sold at retail directly to the customer across the regions of Greater China, including provinces, autonomous regions (Guangxi, Nei Mongol, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Xizang - Tibet), municipalities (Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, and Tianjin), special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau), and Taiwan (all hereafter referred to as “regions”). Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,100 cities in Greater China. For each major city in question, the percent share the city is of the region and of Greater China is reported. Each major city is defined as an area of “economic population”, as opposed to the demographic population within a legal geographic boundary. For many cities, the economic population is much larger that the population within the city limits; this is especially true for the cities of the Western regions. For the coastal regions, cities which are close to other major cities or which represent, by themselves, a high percent of the regional population, actual city-level population is closer to the economic population (e.g. in Beijing). Based on this “economic” definition of population, comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city’s marketing and distribution value vis-à-vis others. This exercise is quite useful for persons setting up distribution centers or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each region and city of influence, latent demand estimates are created for unpainted and finished ready-to-assemble wood home entertainment centers sold in kits excluding custom furniture sold at retail directly to the customer. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

                            Product Description

This study covers the world outlook for unpainted and finished ready-to-assemble wood home entertainment centers sold in kits excluding custom furniture sold at retail directly to the customer across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.
