The first volume of a fantasy sequence collectively called Tyrants and Kings, The Jackal of Nar starts off with a grueling account of what is still trench warfare even if its weaponry is magic flame cannons and trained wolves. The hero Richius is fighting a war he does not believe in for an emperor he loathes. Quite minor incidents come back to haunt him--he prevents a rape and makes a mortal enemy of a rival commander, and the almost casual decision to remain in a tavern in the company of prostitutes produces an obsession that dominates his life.
Marco's frequent clumsiness of style and plotting are almost irrelevant; Richius is a flawed hero whose sense of his own righteousness costs those around him even more than it does him, and there is a real power to his story. This is a book with some splendidly corrupt villains--the Emperor Arkus, obsessed with the pursuit of longevity and the manipulation of everyone around him; Biaggio, his smoothly vicious chief of police--and with opponents of whom we learn more when Richius is forced to change sides; Tharn, the fundamentalist wizard and warlord; and his aging servant Voris. --Roz Kaveney, Amazon.co.uk

Début of Grace and Beauty.......2007-07-30
Ok. Maybe the title of this review doesn't exactly have ANYTHING to do with the following review. This novel is a militaristic themed tale, filled with violence, murder and rivalry, along with downright cruelty and evil. Basically, before I go into detail: ***!IF YOU ARE LIGHT STOMACHED AND/OR A FAN OF ANY KIND OF NO VIOLENT BOOK, OR ARE AN UTTER, COMPLETE AND UNYIELDING PACIFIST, !!!DO NOT READ!!!!***
I am tired right now: it's 10:07 PM and I feel like getting off this evil contraption and cuddling up with my current book, The Lies of Locke Lamora, and reading. But my brain insists I write this review. So I will.
First of all, if you have read thr Prologue you're probably wondering "what?" The first entry in Richius's diary is confusing, nauseating and filled with names and places that we have absolutely no clue what the heck they are (if you are the devious little mapper, please think very hard about your map). My resolution was to skip the darned thing and keep reading. It worked to a good extent.
Here is the basic plot, without using any names, places or any kind of the conworld John Marco wonderfully creates. A man, representing a huge empire in a war is fighting with his grÚup of tired, mad (but friendly) soldiers. Eventually the cavalry (led by a weirdo who the main character dislikes) comes and of course beats the living heck out of the enemy until it is dead (literally and figuratively). Main character meets girl. Main character and friend go to other city and finds girl somehow. Then the main character is called back to the capital, talks with Emperor, dislikes him and goes away. Allies with bad-guys. Good-buys (now bad-guys) attack.
This leads to about page 250, where the story really begins.
Very weak.......2007-07-30
I have recently found this book that somebody must have offered me long time ago .
Obviously it has been forgotten for a long time but I've read it now .
Let us pass on the style that is poor and dialogues that are meaningless .
The main character , Richius is meant to be an ambiguous and reluctant hero (T.Covenant anybody ?) and the plot tries to use the old trick of the evil that is not so evil and the good that is not so good .
To the contrary of what has been said several times before this is NOT "military fantasy" .
The military part (battles , strategy and tactics) takes about 5 % of the book - 1 chapter at the begining and 1 chapter at the end .
So what are the other 95 % about ?
Well mostly dialogues between uninteresting characters about irrelevant issues .
Some travelling too - for example Richius decides to visit his friend who lives a couple of miles from the castle .
Even though the visit has no importance whatsoever , it is accompanied by pages of endless pondering if he should go or not .
"Don't go , it is too cold ." says one .
"Be careful the way is muddy ." says another .
"Should I go ?" ponders Richius .
Finally Richius goes (what a surprise !) and despite him being the king , he goes alone with a sick and weak friend .
They meet 5 (in words five !) wolves in the forest .
Never mind that Richius is a great warior and the famous Jackal of Nar - he gets bitten , his horse is killed and he runs tail between the legs back to the castle .
So this paramount part of the plot "How Richius tried to visit a friend" fails and the heroic knight king almost gets killed by ... a wolf .
Obviously that visit was not so urgent after all because we won't hear about it anymore .
However it gave Marco the opportunity to waste on us one whole chapter .
Another example is the relationship between the very imature Richius and his wife Sabrina .
Reading pages upon pages of dialogues between them is a reading equivalent of having one's teeth pulled .
And after all this reading torture she is disposed off in one line - Richius gets her cut off head in a box and that's it .
I could go on and on but it's only more of the same .
The last very irritating point has been mentioned by many reviewers - the total inconsistence of scale .
Aramoor is a kingdom .
Small but powerful enough to earn its relative independence and the status of a kingdom .
However the size of its army can be estimated at around 10 persons .
We are actually told nothing about its organisation or numbers but it is clear that it cannot spare even 1 guard to accompany the king on the above mentioned visit to a friend that almost finished by the death of the said king .
When it is invaded ... well invaded is a big word , a dozen of soldiers from Talistan ride in , there is ONE guy who tries to fight but of course dies horribly .
In conclusion : even if this subpar work could be compared to Goodkind or Eddings in a bad day , it has nothing to do with good fantasy like Martin or Erikson .
Stay away from it .
A Thoughtful Epic.......2007-04-28
The Jackal of Nar, John Marco, 1999
This book is an extremely expressive version of a World War II novel. The grizzly depictions of well-thought out, realistic characters flow throughout the novel, with the characters actually questioning things. The beginning is a bit of a jump, especially if you're like me and have spent the last month with your face in Terry Pratchett books, but after awhile you get used to the action.
The story goes as follows:
Richius Vantran, son of King Darius, King of Aramoor, a state in the Empire of Nar ruled by Arkus the Tyrant (or so it seems), is fighting a war in the desolate blood-strewn valley of Dring, in the land of Lucel-Lor. He is fighting off Drol, an extremely religious race of Triin (Triin are the people who live Lucel-Lor) and losing badly. Men of his party fall every day, whether to the blood-thirsty wolves or to the red-caped Drol soldiers themselves. The only thing that keeps them alive are the flame cannons, a gas-powered weapon that spews fire like a long-ranged blow torch, and they're starting to run out of kerosene. His friend Dinadin insists they go to the city of Ackel-Nae, where Richius falls deeply in love with a woman named Dyana.
The book is war fantasy with many strange and large plot twists entwined within its contents. It is thoughtfully themed, and will keep you stuck in it till you're done. For age 10+.
An amazing journey..........2007-04-21
John Marco's first literary work, The Jackal of Nar, is a fantastic read. From start to finish you find yourself a companion of Richius Vantran as he endures the greatest of challenges in order to find himself and his purpose.
Marco's writing is truly fantastic, painting pictures of a world never seen before. Contrary to most works of fantasy, Marco constantly surprises the reader by showing all facets of the characters, both good and evil. From start to finish you are constantly trying to figure out complex characters that all seem to be trying to do the right thing. And just when you think that you have a character figured out, Marco shows you the world from their perspective and everything changes.
The end result is a book that reads like a Kubrick film; objective story telling that lets you decide who to side with. Marco has painted the portrait of one man's quest to find himself in a world that is ravaged by war.
I strongly recommend this book. It is an active read, one that you won't want to put down. Set aside a Sunday or two and let Marco paint a cinematic epic with his words, taking you to a world you have never imagined before.
Great Novel.......2007-04-19
To be quite blunt, I LOVE this book.
When I started it I wasn't sure what to expect. Whatever I was expecting, it certainly paled in comparison with what I got. John Marco brings us a gritty fantasy with believable characters and a plot with many unseen twists and turns. The characters in the book are presented in such a way that there is no cut and dried good vs. evil as in so many fantasy novels. Marco has done an excellent job in portraying the motivations of his characters in such a way that no-one is shown as being purely good and at the same time, even the villains are given redeeming qualities. What this does is flesh out the story in such a way that even though it is still a fantasy novel, the characters and story seem more real.
The plot itself if rife with political intrigue and even when the reader is not immersed in the heat of battle, the story carries you along at a feverish pace that is extremely hard to put down.
If you are a fan of the fantasy genre (and even for most who are not) I HIGHLY recommend The Jackal of Nar.

Shockingly Superior!.......2005-03-26
Galax-Arena is absolutely a top shelf book. The plot is original and interesting. The characters are believable and their personalities are dripping with love, fear, and hatred. You feel the same anger and emotions as the characters. The ending is unbeatable and positively perfect. This book will not be able to be pryed from your hands...it is a must read!!! Two thumbs up to Gillian Rubenstein, my new favorite author.
Wonderful!.......2004-07-18
Best. Science Fiction book. Ever. This book is extremely creepy, yet extremely hard to put down. Watch out, everybody. This story has more twists turns than a Harry Potter book, and the ending is the most shocking of them all. Read this book.
A good introduction for Science-Ficition.......2004-07-04
For any young readers who don't have an idea of Science-Ficitoin novels, you should start by reading this astonishing book. It's will suck you in the science-ficition and fantasy realm. If you have any chance in reading the book, just grab it and read the first three chapters and after that, you won't be able to put the book back to it's place. Enjoy...
One of the best science-fiction books I have read!.......2003-12-16
Gilligan Rubenstein is an amazing writer. It's been quite come time since I've read "Galax-Arena", but I can still recall a whole lot of details, just because the writing was so well done. In this exquisite primer on Zen Buddhism, author and ordained Zen priest Angel Kyodo Williams is not trying to convert African Americans into a new religion. Instead, she is simply presenting Zen principles and practices that emphasize living a life of grace and self-acceptance. Having faced the daily challenges of growing up black in America, she is especially adept at showing how these Zen principles apply to the African American experience. "People of color are especially in need of new ways and new answers to the separation and fear we face each day," Kyodo Williams writes. "It wouldn't be a stretch to say that as black people, more than most groups in this country, we live our daily lives with the distinct taste of fear in our mouths.... While the principles offered here are not an antidote to the underlying reasons for our fears, they can give us a different way to approach them."
Kyodo Williams offers a savvy yet tender voice as she walks readers through the basic principles of Zen. It's hard to resist her invitation to take on the numerous sensible vows that lead to enlightenment, such as staying true to the warrior spirit while "committing ourselves to practicing good." The bottom line is that this is a book about claiming the strength, compassion, and integrity that dwell within everyone. And although it speaks to the particular needs and trials of the African American community, readers of all colors and walks of life will find this an irresistible invitation. --Gail Hudson

Encouraging words when I needed them .......2006-03-09
I found "Being Black:Zen and the Art of Living with Fearlessness and Grace" to be exactly what the doctor ordered.
The Book is written in a language that is clear,to the point, and easy to understand. Free from the "psycho-babble" that some books on Buddhism tend to be bogged down with, 'Being Black..." is written in such a way that I felt the author empathized with other Black people who find themselves alone on the Buddhist path and in life.
Sharing in the problems we as Black people sometimes face in our family and social settings.Touching on the negative self talk that we sometimes indulge in.Showing how we can be our own worst enemies at times.
Don't get me wrong-anyone and just about everyone can benefit from reading this book, regardless of race or spiritual path.
It teaches, inspires, comforts, and is even entertaining in some parts.
I highly recommend this book to all who are on a spiritual quest to improve their lives.
A rare glimpse into the heart of a woman........2003-04-07
Rarely are we able to look into the life of a person who is as honest and sincere in the telling of their story. This book goes far beyond the how to of ZEN and fixes its sights on the why. She manags to articulate her defining moments and bring the reader in to draw parallels in their own experience. I literally laughed and cried throughout this book. It is not often that we are able to see a black person in their full spectrum of human being. This book is in direct contrast of popular cultures simplification of the African American.
A Mexican-American male's perspective
a white male perspective.......2002-04-26
This is an insightful and beautifully written book about the mystery and challenge of being. It is eloquent and readable, full of both wonder and clarity. I have bought copies for my 2 daughters, as high school and college graduation presents. Deepest thanks to Ms. Williams for gifting us with such a special, insightful "guidebook" for the warrior spirit in all of us.
Spiritual Awakening.......2001-06-27
The book was a gift in every way. Ms. Williams has demystified the East and made Zen down to Earth. As an African- American woman, I've been searching in vain for a spiritual home. Thanks to Ms. Williams, I think that I've found one. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for guidance on her/his spritual path.
Zen Can Demystify Even Being Black in America.......2000-12-04
Being an over 40 African American male dipping and dabbing in Zen for several years I read with Ms. Williams book with pride and anticipation, not to mention a small bit of skepticism. My skepticism being, how could she focus on being Black and still be true to Zen belief? But just as I thought, being Black had to take a back seat to her Zen way of life and principles. Ms. Williams did a great job in keeping the focus on the fact that she was a Black Woman mostly through pass experiences and tribulations. Responding to events with the knowledge and wisdom she possessed during that time in her life.
After a few chapters it became evident that she realized the time had come in her life to move beyond the personal heartache of racism and injustice in America. That Zen could allow her to be in it, but not of it. Minimizing the sting and ugliness of racism from a purely personal phenomenon to a universal sickness in the one. No longer being totally consumed, but living a wisdom that is much greater then the screen or projector. She did a wonderful job of introducing Zen in a basic and simple manner. A format that should help African Americans or anyone else that is looking for a path.
I rated this book a 3 only because I had read the outcome before opening the cover. The outcome being that yeah we can talk about Blackness and the hardships endured, but once introduced to the wisdom of Zen. You have no choice but to move the debate from the centricity of I to the universality of we.
Ms. Williams keep up the good work and I pray and meditate that the African American Zen community continues to grow.

An exciting area of collecting for clock and watch enthusiasts is literally opened up with this book. On the outside the automatic wristwatch is like its counterpart, but once the case is opened a different world appears. Here 200 watches are shown, each with three photos to show the dial, and the complete and partly disassembled movement. The book introduces all the Swiss manufacturers and provides an historical overview of the development of automatic watches from 1926 to 1978. Information on the functioning mechanism and construction of each design is offered along with the data needed to locate the watches chronologically.
Customer Reviews:
Extensive research.......2005-03-18
Everthing previously written about the book is correct. What is not: the book does not have a price guide, like one reader said. After all, it's a watch movement's book! How can it have a price guide? The book have very good pictures, but 70% of them are in black and white. I didn't rate this book 5 stars, in fact, because it does not have german to english translations in the schemes of watch movements and pictures that have something written in german. Finally, the book is a little bit disorganized, since it does not have an index or different type fonts to "tell" you that you are in another chapter.
Added:
After reading the book, i found the price lists. It's one book's page...
Great book for collectors.......2004-07-03
This book provides a complete listing of movement caliber & historical information in a very straightforward fashion. It also includes close up photos of some 200 individual watches and also includes a helpful, though outdated, pricing guide. It is an indispensible reference book bound in top-quality heavy duty binding. I found it to be worth every penny I paid.
comprehensive.......2003-09-17
Well researched, technical details to a useful degree for collectors, list of calibers, good photos.
One of my favourites, be it for research on specific models or to just flick through from time to time.
Nice reference and coffee table book........1999-10-24
This is a great book for you Rolex and Omega lovers (as well as other fine Swiss watches). It covers only Swiss wristwatches but it does a nice job of it. Lots of black and white (as well as some color) close ups of faces and movements. There is a table to tell the approximate range of years when specific caliber movements were produced. I'm certainly not an expert but I would recommend this book for those who are getting into the hobby of collecting fine Swiss automatic movement (self-winding) watches.
P.S. Look elsewhere for information on modern quartz or early manual winding watches. If you like bumper and/or full rotor automatic winding wristwatches then this book is for you.
Great book for automatic movment reference!.......1998-03-20
A great book, with almost all the automatic movement ever made. With detailed technical info and great pictures, this book is certainly worth it.

Definitely should be re-issued.......2006-10-19
This book is a must read for ANY quilter, whether working with regular or miniature pieces. Thanks to Ms. Collins for sharing all these terrific ideas.
should be re-issued.......2005-07-12
this is a wonderful book for a quilter of any level of skill or experience.
i have no plans (right now!) to work at the scale the author enjoys, and i do not intend to enter any comptetitions, but i still want to do the best work i can. just one quick reading has improved my technique. thanks to ms. collins, i am more aware of how i am cutting, piecing and sewing, and more aware of what the machine is doing, can do, or will do. some of what she writes about i knew, some i never considered, some advice i've seen in other publications, but having all of this information in one source reinforces the lessons.
even if you have other technique or block books on your shelf, you will benefit from this one. as other reviewers have mentioned, ms. collins accepts the time and attention that good craftmanship requires, and encourages her readers to put that time and attention into their work.
This is definitely one to add to your collection.......2001-07-11
Sally Collins has outdone herself with this book. In our modern day society, there is an emphasis on speed - everyone rushes around trying to squeeze in as many activities and projects into each minute of every day. This sometimes has the unfortunate consequence of less attention to detail and the result is sloppiness. In this book, Sally shows the quilter how to slow down and enjoy the process of creating each quilt block.
She starts her book with a chapter on Philosophy and Creativity and her deep love for quilting is very evident in the words that she uses. Phrases such as "..take pleasure in the journey", "..experience the joy and bliss that quiltmaking gives each of us". She views errors as "gifts...opportunities for success" and says that "problem solving is a real key to finding the joy in quiltmaking". With these statements, she removes the fear of making mistakes and turns errors into learning opportunities. She states that quality workmanship is not just about perfect sewing, but also knowing how to solve problems as they occur. One would be tempted to skip this introduction and jump right into the technique and block sections - this is a mistake. It may sound a bit corny, but after reading these pages, I was inspired at the prospect of making miniature blocks rather than being intimidated as I know most quilters are by the tiny pieces used in small scale blocks.
She follows the introduction with a detailed section on tools and explains what they are used for which is very helpful. A chapter on Color and Fabric is next and she does a wonderful job explaining the importance of color and fabric selection in general and also how to select appropriate fabrics for small scale blocks. There are a number of helpful example images that accompany the text. As we progress further into the book, we begin to learn about designing blocks and drafting. She goes into detail on how to draft blocks from beginning to end, a discussion that I found fascinating. Sprinkled throughout this chapter and each of the ones that follow, there are tip boxes titled "Noteworthy" that are filled with valuable information.
For the quilter interested in improving their accuracy in assembling blocks, the chapter entitled "Workmanship" is without question, the most valuable one to read - and should be read through several times to reinforce key concepts. Sally discusses various factors that cause problems from cutting to sewing to pressing. The bottom line is that the quilter needs to pay careful and close attention to each step of the process. Her quilting experience is evident in the tips on pinning, blocking, and measuring that she includes.
The last chapter before starting the block section deals with various construction techniques, such as assembling half square triangles, English Paper Piecing, and using bias bars. But, she does not stop there - she ends the chapter with a detailed and well illustrated tutorial on matching seams, a very important factor in sewing quilt blocks and one that is rarely addressed in instructional quilting books.
The Block Collection consists of forty-nine blocks with familiar names such as Churn Dash, Dresden Plate, or Bear's Paw and six of the blocks are her own designs. Each block is accompanied by a color photograph and includes template outlines and color coded measurements for three, four, and six inch blocks. She always includes a tip or two appropriate to the block, perhaps about construction or color selection. Each of these blocks is used in her quilt that she discusses in the last chapter. I was fortunate to see this quilt at a show and can vouch for its beauty and attention to detail. I spent several minutes looking at various blocks and marvelling at how well she put it together. If you are interested in making a similar one for yourself, she includes the instructions for the quilt along with fabric requirements.
She concludes the book with more eye candy in the form of a Gallery of full color photographs of quilts that she has made using the blocks in the book to whet the appetite of the reader. An alphabetic index and a brief biography of the author can be found on the final pages of the book.
It is well worth taking the time to read the book from cover to cover before embarking on the blocks. The instructions are clear and concise and well presented from a visual standpoint. This is definitely one to add to the collection!
How to use precision piecing methods.......2001-07-06
Sally Collins' Art Of Machine Piecing [...] tells how to use precision piecing methods to help attain quality quilts. Almost fifty traditional blocks are represented in the course of explaining how machine piecing works.

Just a few chapters into Inkspell, Mo (a.k.a. "Silvertongue") sagely says to his daughter, "Stories never really end, Meggie, even if the books like to pretend they do. Stories always go on. They don't end on the last page, any more than they begin on the first page." A fitting meta-observation for this, the unplanned second installment in Cornelia Funke's beloved now-trilogy.
Of course, it's that sort of earnest, almost gushing veneration of books and book-loving that made the absorbing suspense-fantasy Inkheart so wonderful in the first place, with that lit-affection getting woven integrally into the plot (Inkheart being both Funke's first book in the series, and the fictitious book within that book, authored by the frustrated Fenoglio, now trapped within the book, er, within the book. Fenoglio, perhaps not surprisingly, self-referentially wishes in Inkspell that he had written a sequel to Inkheart.) Inkspell should serve as a special treat for fans of the first book, as characters from Inkheart who have found themselves in the "real world" (if there is such a thing) find themselves read back into their own mythic, word-spun world--along with some of our favorite "real-world" characters. As with the previous book, Funke's greatest accomplishment here is telling such a rich and involving (and fun!) story, while still managing sweet, subtle commentary on the nature of words and meaning. Expect a tantalizing finale, too--as Funke says, "No reader will forgive me the ending, though, without a part three." (Ages 8 and up) --Paul Hughes
Book Description
Although a year has passed, not a day goes by without Meggie thinking of Inkheart, the book whose characters came to life - and changed her life forever.
But for Dustfinger, the fire-eater brought into being from words, the need to return to the original tale has become desperate. When he finds a crooked storyteller with the magical ability to read him back, Dustfinger leaves behind his young apprentice Farid and plunges into the medieval inkscape once more.
Distraught, Farid goes in search of Meggie, and before long both are caught inside the book, too. There they meet Inkheart's author, Fenoglio, now living within his own story. But the tale is much changed, and threatening to evolve in ways none of them would have ever imagined. Will Meggie, Farid, and Fenoglio manage to write the wrongs of a charmed world? Or is their story on the brink of a very bad ending?

inkspell.......2007-10-16
I love this book. My kids can't wait to listen to the rest of the story.
Inkspell Rocks! .......2007-10-02
I like Inkspell because, like Inkheart, it becomes something that not many writers have attempted before: a book about books.
Inkspell is much like Funke's other books where a few people find out about magic and get caught in it. Younger children should not read this book because some characters cuss a little tiny bit; but who cares?
Thank you so much Cornelia Funke!

Not Exactly a Page Turner.......2007-09-04
In this book, the Ink World is in trouble, the characters end up going inside the book where the author of the book hopes to straighten out the mess in which the world he created is. His attempts fail miserably resulting in the death of a character that I did not care for very much, but then the character is brought back to life through the self-sacrifice of another character. I did not care for that very much, but I suspect it is a way to set up the next book. The characters from the real world are still trapped in the fictional world, which should allow the next book to begin without having an excuse to read the characters into the story.
The second half of the book was easier to read than the first half, but I had a hard time reading it. In my opinion, the book would have been better if it was about half the length that it is, but overall it is a good book and provides more information about the Ink World than the first book did.
Loved it..........2007-08-27
I bought Inkheart and Inkspell together on a whim, and by the conclusion of Inkheart I was glad I had, I was extremely curious about what the next volume would bring. I was not disapointed. IS. picks up shortly after the events of Inkheart, and I am happy to say that the second installment moves a good deal more briskly then it's parent novel. Those who found Inkheart over long will likely not be thrilled to find that Inkspell is fully 108 pages longer then Inkheart, which I must say was off putting at first. But for all that I couldn't put Inkspell down, The story seems to have grown up, just as Meggie is growing into herself. Much stronger development, and a more balenced ratio of backstory to current events makes IS. a much easier read then IH. And a deeper emotional core make it a far more enjoyable one. There's still a good bit of slogging through detail, and scenes that could have easily been excluded, but I found these things easy to ignore. It's simply a truely great tale.
A slow read..........2007-08-25
This was an interesting and original story, however reading it took a long time. It just didn't quite grab me.

It's a fantasy, it's long, and it's got dragons in it. Dragon Rider is bound to be another hit book from Cornelia Funke! Ever since the popularity of bestselling fantasies The Thief Lord and Inkheart went global a few years ago, legions of fans have demanded more books from the German author than she can reasonably hope to write each year. So, re-discovering this hefty, earlier novel from 1997 was a logical development--and her keenest readers will devour it as before.
Aimed at slightly younger readers than her previous novels, despite its massive five hundred pages, Dragon Rider is about a brave young dragon called Firedrake who embarks upon a dangerous journey to the Rim of Heaven in the Himalayas--a magical place where silver dragons can rest easy, free from the threat of destruction by mankind and their only hope of sanctuary. The key to its location is a map rendered by a rat who is a master cartographer.
Firedrake is joined on his quest by Ben, an orphaned boy, and Sorrell--a wise-cracking Brownie that is an odd, but ingenious, grumpy kind of fairy. Their journey is not a straightforward one by any means. Created by an alchemist called Petrosius Henbane in 1424, Nettlebrand (a malevolent creature covered in impenetrable gold plates) is their biggest threat--he is intent on destroying them. Nettlebrand is aided by Twigleg, a homunculus who has stowed away in Ben's bag and who is feeding reports on their progress back to his master.
Their exciting encounters are many... It is easy to forgive the narrative's excessive length when readers are gorging on such a wonderfully inventive and readable story from an author who has her readers in the palm of her hand on every page. (Age 9 and over) --John McLay
Book Description
Firedrake, a young dragon, receives a frightening warning one night: Humans are planning to destroy the valley in which he lives! All the dragons must flee. Their only refuge is a place above the clouds called the Rim of Heaven -- which may not even exist. Firedrake boldly volunteers to go ahead first. As he embarks on his journey, he meets Ben, a runaway boy. Together, the boy and the dragon make their way toward the Rim of Heaven, all the while running a step ahead of Nettlebrand, a monster who will stop at nothing to hunt down Firedrake. Their quest will truly become an adventure like no other.

Now THIS is a WRITER!!.......2007-10-10
WOW. WOW. WOW. We read tons and tons of books. Lately, due to driving to a far away school daily, we have been going through a new audiobook every few days. None have even compared to the caliber of Dragon Rider. The vivid imagery, the use of language, the character development, the magical storyline... I could go on and on!
I saw this in the past but thought my child might be a little bit young. He is 8 now and we probably could have read it even a year or two ago. We are going to get everything this author has ever written. (NO, really, I'm not a relative of hers! I am just so sick of wasting money on children's books that are hopelessly boring and poorly written).
Good.......2007-10-06
A great fantasy book a real thrill of events. A dragon and a boy and brownie set out to find a paradise for the fellow dragons of the world. on the way they meat tons of mysterious characters life dwarfs and a wicked dragon who is also searching for the paradise. I thought the book was kind of dull at some points could have about 50-100 pages shorter. Funke did a great job of describing the characters and terraine. It was good I would recomend it for young aldults.
enchanting!.......2007-09-24
I enjoyed this story one hundred percent! I own both the book in hardback, as well as the audio version read by Brendan Fraser. While I enjoyed reading it, listening to it is even better thanks to the awesome voices Fraser does for each character. Tgus us definitely a story everyone in your family can enjoy, and the audio version is great for plane or car rides!!!!
Great book for kids... good book for adults.......2007-08-27
This book is a wonderful story about a colony of dragons that are about to be overrun by human construction. A dragon by the name of Firedrake and his brownie buddy Sorrel start out on a journey to find the Rim of Heaven, a place it is believed that the dragons escaped to 300 years earlier. On the way they met a homeless boy named Ben who is to become the Dragon Rider.
This book is very entertaining, has some very imaginative characters and situations and is a wonderful book for kids between the ages of 7-15 ish, which is the intended audience. If you're a little older than that the book will feel a little young but it is still very enjoyable.
The only negative I would say with this book is that some of the characters, Sorrell especially, are very onery and negative (which is their character) and kids who read this could possible pick up some mean langauge etc. from reading it but nothing real bad.
Overall a great book!
Great read........2007-08-01
While the intended audience is "young adult", this book is a wonderful read for all ages, from the young to the young at heart!

a must have!.......2001-07-21
The long awaited Brendan Fraser biography is here, and to anyone with an interest in this incredible talent this book is a must have. Fans suffering from cases of blind faith may wince a bit at the author's honesty and objectivity regarding some of Mr. Fraser's career choices and box office results. But Denise Tyrell's job was not to sugar coat the truth, instead she goes so far as to dispel many myths supported by magazine articles and talk show hosts. The book confirms what Brendan Fraser admirers have known for quite some time: that he is a completely unique individual with an incomparable gift. To those of you who are just now discovering his body of work, don't look for any behind the scenes dirt - there simply isn't any. The fact that such a genuinely pleasant person could be thriving in today's Hollywood is just one of the facts this book brings forth.
Brendan Fraser.......2001-07-09
I am a huge Brendan Fraser fan; I think he is the most charming, energetic and fresh actor in Hollywood today. In this autobiographical book, Denise Tyrrell is able to capture that energy and charm in a very eloquent narrative of Brendan's life. When you think of Brendan Fraser from Encino Man to The Mummy, he does not necessarily appear to be an actor with a life story worth reading, but NOT so!!! I found his life story to be very provocative, intriguing and entertaining, with very engaging use of language by the author.
This book is required reading for anyone who enjoys Brendan Fraser or his movies. The best part is that there is still a long way to go in his career! So hopefully the author will update this great story soon.
Faascinating Reading about a Fascinating Actor.......2001-06-18
Denise Tyrrell's recently published book about Brendan Fraser is concise, precise, and a joy to read. The book goes into much detail about what has motivated Mr. Fraser to become the actor - and the man - that he is, and covers the territory in a writing style that makes the book difficult to put down. Her style flows smoothly from tales of his friends from college, to his early meetings with casting directors, to his choices in film roles - all of which told with a truthful eye. Sometimes seeming to bolster what some film critics have found to be 'weak links' in his acting choices - or in a film company's editing or promotion choices - there's never a hint at disrespect for the talent Mr. Fraser so obviously possesses. Readers looking for salacious gossip won't find it in these pages, as the author has kept her focus keen, and the respect she pays to him as the private man he is shows as well. I'd recommend this book to any film fan or even budding thespian who'd like to know the work - professionally and privately - it takes to become a good actor. I'd also recommend this book to any fan of Mr. Fraser's, whether a long-time fan or one new to his work. The reader won't be disappointed. Cheers for this book, the publishers, and of course, for young Mr. Fraser, who's just at the beginning of what many of us hope is a long and fruitful acting career.

Book Description
This book offers an accessible and broadly conceived introduction to social psychology. Written in a lucid and lively style, it assumes no prior knowledge of the field, and is the ideal textbook to get students thinking about the subject. The volume covers the main issues of social psychology - as well as many classic studies - such as self and personality, interpersonal relations, language and communication, altruism and aggression, group processes, attitudes, and intergroup relations. What sets this book apart is its coverage of less orthodox topics which are often neglected in introductions of this kind. These areas include emotions, social and moral development, social representations, health and illness, employment and unemployment, and the implications of these fields for social policy. The result is an unusually rich and wide-ranging presentation of social psychology, drawing together a deliberately varied range of methodology and theory. The currently dominant cognitive and psychological approach to social psychology receives systematic consideration in a number of chapters, but its focus on individuals and face-to-face interaction is continually related to broader social concerns and contexts. This is achieved through the use of cross-cultural and historical comparisons, together with an awareness of the contributions that can be made by related social sciences. The authors aim to show that social psychology illuminates the whole of social life, including everyday issues faced by all of us.
