Book Description
From the acclaimed author of The Dog Walker comes Late Night Talking, a tender and funny novel about bad behavior, the fragility of friendship and family, and how we cannot choose whom we love.
Jeannie Sterling, host of a late-night NYC talk show, vents with her listeners about everyday injustices, from rude cell phone users and poor gym etiquette to bad drivers and negligent pet owners -- the many aggravations of modern urban life. An idealistic California girl raised by two free-spirited parents, Jeannie believes in a life of value through activism. She's passionate about making a difference, about making the world a better place, one annoying person at a time.
For as long as she can remember, success in her career has been more than enough. But after all these years of being single, Jeannie realizes that some of the pieces of her perfect puzzle aren't fitting quite right. The people she thought she knew best all harbor secrets, secrets Jeannie isn't prepared for, secrets that can't be digested, processed, and solved in the neat three-hour window of her show. Her best friend, Luce, is growing distant and distracted; her wayward father unexpectedly moves in; and an ambiguous relationship with her college crush ignites.
When the radio station is bought by the maverick mogul Nicholas Moss, Jeannie's career, her one safe haven, also descends into chaos. She is pushed to increase ratings and goes too far, risking the loss of everything and everyone important to her.
Delightfully real and deliciously flawed, Jeannie Sterling is a character we can't help but root for as she faces her life's most hilarious -- and heartbreaking -- challenges.

LATE NIGHT TALKING by Leslie Schnur
June 10, 2007
Amazon Rating: 4/5 stars
Take a late night talk show and combine it with a young woman who is out to change her world, and you get LATE NIGHT TALKING by Leslie Schnur. Jeannie Sterling hosts her own radio talk show, and loves her job. She gets to rattle on about her pet peeves in the early morning hours and feels she's doing something about her part of New York.
In the opening chapter, Jeannie manages to anger a very important New Yorker, Nicholas Moss, who is one of the wealthiest men around town. He is so angry he decides to pay a little visit to Jeannie's little radio station, and he ends up purchasing the station and is now, therefore, Jeannie's new boss. His first change to the show is to modify the format. It is now to be a live show, and Jeannie gets to roam the streets, putting an extra edge to the show and help boost ratings.
Jeannie and Nicholas rub each other the wrong way, but she takes to the new format in a big way, to a point where she's going way over the top with her near-vigilante antics live on the streets of New York, where she's inspiring others to take things into their own hands, just like Jeannie. Nicholas, as well as others, is not too happy with the way the show is going, but Jeannie doesn't see the problem and continues on with her campaign to clean up New York.
While the center of the novel is the talk show, the meat of the story is Jeannie and her relationships, including with her best friend Luce who works with her at the station, her other best friend Tommy, who she soon thinks she's in love with, her father who has been absent from most of her life, and of course Nicholas, who she will soon discover has more in common with her than with anyone else.
I didn't know what to expect from LATE NIGHT TALKING but was pleasantly surprised. I think readers will enjoy this novel by the author of THE DOG WALKER. Some may not take to Jeannie and her self-righteous personality at first, but she grows on you. By the end of the book, I was glad at how things turned out for her, and was glad I had spent the time reading LATE NIGHT TALKING.
Any book that makes me feel as angry as I did at a fictional character has to be good.......2007-05-30
Jeannie Sterling is the proud host of her own late-night radio talk show, "Sterling Behavior." She is on the air in the early morning hours, blasting rude and inconsiderate people and their behavior. Be it throwing wads of gum on the street, not scooping up doggie poop, or throwing trash on the side of the road, Jeannie believes it's her job to point these faults out to the world in order to help make her section of New York a better place to live.
Jeannie encounters business tycoon Nicholas Moss on the street early one morning as he's driving his friend's SUV while talking on a cell phone, one of Jeannie's many pet peeves. When his vehicle stops for a moment, she has an unforgettable encounter with him. Moss later hears about this very incident on the radio, retold by Jeannie on her show, as she gives a piece of her own mind to the man who drove the Hummer while chatting away on his cell.
Little does Jeannie know the huge impression she left on Moss or that he wants to take revenge by buying out the radio station. He hopes to put a little fear in her life for a while, but he also can't stop thinking about her; although she annoyed him, he feels a deep attraction for her.
The radio show eventually goes live on the street, and then Moss decides it's time for "Sterling Behavior" to transition to television. He predicts great things for Jeannie, if only she pushes it a bit more. Jeannie does, and now she can't seem to stop her near-vigilante attempts at fixing the world, seeing only one thing: her vision of how to make the world right.
While Jeannie's career takes off flying, her relationships change for the worse. Best friend Luce, the producer of her radio show, is keeping a secret from Jeannie --- and when Jeannie finds out, she feels hurt, not understanding why Luce felt the need to keep such big news from her. Jeannie also has begun dating her longtime best friend, Tommy, about whom Luce has had a few doubts. Jeannie doesn't notice these negative qualities in Tommy, and is almost angry with Luce for thinking them. Then there is Jeannie's absent father, who makes a reappearance in her life along with a mutt named "Mouse." It's through these relationships that one can almost gauge where Jeannie's personal life is going, as it takes her a while to learn who the most important people in her life are and who she can do without.
Although she is afraid to admit it, the most important person right now is Moss. A man who came along and almost ruined her radio career by buying out the station, he actually is someone who is more in tune with her than Tommy ever will be.
LATE NIGHT TALKING is interspersed with dialogue from Jeannie's shows, and through the exchanges between Jeannie and Luce, we get to see what the program and Jeannie herself are all about. The more I got to know her, however, the less I liked her. And I think this was author Leslie Schnur's intention. I started to get irritated by Jeannie's holier-than-thou attitude and her need to point out everyone's faults and errors, no matter how minute. Those around her eventually find her behavior on the show appalling. Jeannie, we learn, is a very self-centered person. While she appears to love her friends, there is something missing in her personality that prevents her from really caring about them for who they are.
Any book that makes me feel as angry as I did at a fictional character has to be good. There were moments when I wanted to admire Jeannie for taking a stance on issues and topics that bother the average person. Unfortunately, though, most of the time she is living with blinders on, too full of her self-importance and her need to fix the world. While she did redeem herself in the end, her transformation from a self-centered, driven woman to a compassionate individual happened much too quickly for me to believe. Nevertheless, the story is well-written and I will certainly take a look at Schnur's debut novel, THE DOG WALKER.

Smart, Funny, Original.......2007-05-28
In this hilarious novel, Schnur has created a truly original and loveable heroine in Jeannie. She's so human and frail and tough -- all at the same time. Any woman who has ever walked behind a litter bug, sat next to an obnoxious, loud person at a restaurant, or stood helplessly as someone cuts in line ahead of her will identify with Jeannie's crusade against all the boorish behavior in life. This book does what all wonderful novels do -- absorb us and amuse us and make us root passionately for the central character. This is as much a novel of manners as any Jane Austin novel. Schnur is a wonderful observer of life and frailty. It's a gift to be able to laugh at our shortcomings and this book is a wonderful way to spend a rainy weekend.
A Totally Enjoyable Read.......2007-05-21
A smart, funny, modern-day Rock Hudson/Doris Day romantic comedy with all the trimmings. The twists and turns and sophisticated banter keep the plot moving at an entertaining pace, and the outrage spewed by Jeannie Sterling, talk show host extraordinaire, will spark a familiar fire in all of us who are fed up with the outright rude behavior we're bombarded with on a daily basis.
fine contemporary romance over the air waves.......2007-05-16
Following her all night talk radio show Sterling Behavior, Jeannie Sterling enjoys walking home. Jeannie has two things she obsesses over; first to end rudeness especially in Manhattan and second to find a love forever. On her way home, a stud driving a Hummer almost hits her. She calls him a turkey even as he steps out of the vehicle. They have a confrontation before she scratches the Hummer.
He thinks she is a kook, Jeannie rants about him on her radio show until she realizes he is zillionaire Nicholas Moss. Since he listens to her show as a fellow insomniac he realizes that this hostess calling him a pig is a righteous prig who considers herself the arbiter of right and wrong. She assumes he inherited wealth when instead his parents were East Village working stiffs. His goal is get even with Jennie by buying the radio station WBUZ. Thus as her seventy-five years old dad Lou arrives to stay in her apartment with his companion Mouse the dog and her beloved reporter friend Tommy Whitney returns from overseas, Moss buys the station. Soon a new format of Jeannie and her sidekick Luce working rudeness on the street leads to a TV show even as she begins to wonder what is right for her professionally and personally.
The concept of talk radio comes across as a winner as Jeanie is an interesting humorous host whose tales are realistic and sadly amusing as we all have done some of the rudeness she rants against. The support cast is strong as each enables the audience to better understand the lead characters especially Jeannie. Although, as characters like Luce point out, Jeannie's incessant rants can become irritating, contemporary fans will enjoy this romance over the air waves.

Sisterly love is not always simple and steadfast. Disturbing in its portrayal of tolerant blindness to race as part of the problem of racial hatred, Night Talk traces the friendship of two girls, one white and one black, as they grow up in the same environment but in different worlds. Janey's mother is the housemaid for Evie and her mother. Evie accepts Janey readily into her world and as her roommate, a secret that must be kept from the neighbors. Yet Janey begins to view Evie's acceptance of her as blind to the issues of society and race. The rift between them reaches a critical test when Janey, as an adult, is accused of murder.
Book Description
Recently Nominated for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, Night Talk has served as an inspiration for honest discussions of race around the country.A beautiful, moving story of the unlikely and enduring friendship of two girls, one white and one black, who grew up together in the radically divided deep South. At night, under the same roof, under the same moon, nothing divides the girls, Evie and Janey Louise. Talking on their beds, they discuss their strong mothers, their absent fathers, and they wonder about paths their lives will take. Yet during the day, Evie is blind to their differences-that she is white and her best friend is black. It is only as they grow older that Evie comes to see the inequalities that permeate their lives and to understand that for their friendship to continue she must recognize the different worlds they face.

Leaves much to think about.......2003-02-06
- in our own everyday interactions with people.
If there is anything I learned from this view through Evie's eyes, it's that nothing can be taken for granted. There are not enough words for me to describe this book... it gave me a new window into the Civil Rights movement.
The ending of the book, though, just blew me away. Who would have known...? I won't say much more here because I'll give the book away, but it's definitely something that belongs on anyone's bookshelf.
interesting.......2000-09-28
I found Night talk to be a good book. The story was unusal doing the time setting in the book, with the great friendship between Evie, who is white, and Janey Lou who is black, and also the friendship between their mothers. I throught the ending was surprising.
A little slow at first, but gets a lot better...........1999-07-16
When I first started to read Night Talk, I was a little confused, but shortly afterwards, I became very interested in the plot. It really flew by, and I think it was a very captivating story. I recommend it to anyone!
a heavy read.......1998-03-13
Having grown up in the South in the 50's and 60's, I am always intrigued with different fiction perspectives on the racial climate of that time. I found NIght Talk to pick up speed as it went, especially since the daughter-father letters at the beginning seemed really slow and awkward. The story became intense and very real, but perhaps Ms. Cox tried to accomplish too much as she examined racial harmony (or lack of) and the father-daughter relationship. However, her treatment of the several generations of Southern women and their racial perspectives was masterful.
A beautiful work, skillfully written........1997-12-27
I am in awe of her talent. This is a beautiful work, skillfully written and a wonderful, full story. It covers all the important issues of friendship, family, and love. It also covers integration, hate, rape, and biology! There is even a courtroom scene. It is deep and beautiful. A very great read.
Cox moves easily back and forth between the 1940's and the 1990's in the voice of Evie who has a keen insight into the world and its beauty. Issues of divorce, integration, mental illness, rape, lynching, but also love and friendship, especially friendship between girls and women, are not too big for Cox. This is a work of high quality.
Book Description
A hip chick from Newport Beach, California, who's just turned thirty, discovered she's the incarnation of the Hindu goddess Kali, and happens to be unemployed and still living with her parents. Saving the world, though, may prove to be a curry-scented breeze compared to dealing with her extended Indian family. In their eyes she isn't just the black sheep -- she's low-grade mutton.
To make matters worse, despite frequent and therapeutic bouts of shopping and Starbucks, and the mentoring of a Taco Bell-loving, Coca Cola-guzzling swami, Maya has trouble just surviving, thanks to the attentions of a Kali-hating fanatic and a matchmaking aunt hell-bent on finding her a nice Indian boy. Maya has no interest in boys. She wants a man and she may have found one.
He's tall, dark, and gorgeous ... and completely uninterested in her.
In the name of all that's holy and fashionable ... what on Earth is a goddess to do?

Funny & Engaging.......2007-09-19
This is such a fun and engaging book, something nice to read while sunning at the beach or waiting for your flight at the airport.
I liked it so much, I interviewed its author, Sonia Singh about this book and her latest projects. It's nice to learn more about the Indian culture and the Indian-American culture.
Funy, funny, funny!.......2007-06-16
This is one heck of a funny book. Right now my husband is reading the book and I hear him chuckling every few minute. This girl is so talented she can write about anything. This is a book - movie waiting to be made.
Don't read too much into the theme or the story . Don't expect any new world goddess wisdom, spitiutality, and you will laugh all the way through this book, particularly if you are of Indian background.
My book: The Reading Lesson: Teach Your Child to Read in 20 Easy Lessons
A heart of gold.......2007-04-07
This book was an easy, entertaining read. Maya is a spoiled brat californian with no purpose in her life. Her parents want her to get married get a job show SOME interest in doing something.
She goes off to meet her arranged fiancee and meets up with two dudes who tell her she's a goddess. And we're off.
It really is entertaining, and, errr, enlightening to those of us who don't know much about the Hindu religion. However, I found Maya, Tahir (the fiancee dude) and most of the other characters, well, annoying. Their self-centered stupidity was not entertaining, and I kept turning the pages faster hoping that any one of them would show some depth. Only the Indian mystic seemed to have any depth, and even he was annoying.
So, though the story was an ok ride, in the end, I only kinda enjoyed it.

odd but fun.......2007-03-17
This book is well written for contemporary light-hearted chick lit. Low key fun. I would recommend.
Easy, Breezy and Funny.......2006-08-09
This book is highly recommended for lazy Sunday afternoons when your grey matter wants to doze off or for times when you just want to take a break from `serious' reading. It is one of those "they lived happily ever after" books, where life seems to be a jumble for the protagonist but miraculously everything falls in place by the time you turn the last page. Entertaining and engaging, the hip style of writing and the humor will surely keep you hooked.

The Ace's Dream I've always been lucky, although you wouldn't necessarily know it to look at me. Take now, for instance, 15,000 feet off the ground in the seat of a baby Nieuport, Archie bursting shells all around me, German Pfalz buzzing around like someone stirred up a wasps' nest, machine guns tracing lines of fire through the air. But not a single bullet-hole marring the canvas of my Nieuport, much less me. Like I said, lucky. A Pflaz roars past, guns chattering. I pull back on the stick hard, pulling up my machine's nose and climbing up after him. I roll to the side and come up right behind. The Hun pilot doesn't even see me. With a grin I get him in my sights and hit the trigger on the paired machine guns mounted on the nose of my machine. They yammer out 650 rounds a minute, tracers lighting the way to the Pfalz's tail. I see smoke pour out in a steady stream and the Pfalz starts to go into a dive, the wind fanning the flames spreading across his tail. He! 's finished. I don't bother watching him go down, not when there are so many other tempting targets to deal with. I climb up to 20,000, the ceiling of my little Nieuport, and look down, spotting another Pflaz some 4,000 feet below. I bank to the left and come down in a dive, putting the Hun directly in my sights. Machine guns roar and the tracers announce my attack, but too late. The Pfalz banks one way, then the other, trying to get away, but I stay on him, my rounds ripping through canvas and cracking framework, looking for a vital spot or the pilot himself. I find it when some rounds reach the Pfalz's engine, which starts to smoke and the machine goes into a long, slow dive, trailing smoke like a flag of surrender. Making a close pass, I give the Hun pilot an ironic salute as he starts to drop, almost close enough to imagine he can hear me, even over the roar of the wind and the crackle of the flames starting to spout from his crippled engine. "When you get to ground, tell 'em Nathan Zachary sent you!"
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book based on the popular character.......2007-05-07
This book is the prequel to the computer game and gives a really good back story. It follows how Nathan Zachary got his start and set himself up as a pirate of the air. There were a few mix-ups compared to the game, but the book explains better and makes more sense, if you liked the character, read it. Otherwise the world of this book is amazing on its own.
Great, A must for anyone who loves an exiting read.......2001-01-09
I must say that this is one of the best books I have read in a long time. I own the Crimson Skies computer game and love it also. This story kept me hooked to the book, I couldnt put it down. The only reosen I gave it 4 stars insead of 5 is because in some areas it gets kinda cheesy and there are some noticeable errors throughout the book, other than that it is a simply riveting story and I was sad to finish the last page.
Good background material on a recurring character.......2000-12-20
Nathan Zachary pops up a lot in CS fiction, such as "Wings of Fortune #1: Rogue Flyer" and some of the online short stories at the game's Website, and this brought me up to speed on him. The dogfight scenes were exciting, although some of the World War One dogfight manuevers like the Vrille and Renversement were lost on someone who's used to the more-modern Immellmann, Split-S, High Yo-Yo and Scissors. It requires familiarity with the game to make complete sense, but it's easy to read and quite enjoyable.

Nicely sums up Osho's teaching.......2005-07-10
This book contains concise quotes from Osho on a variety of topics. For those who are unfamiliar with him, this is the best possible introduction to his teachings. For seasoned students of Osho, this is a good quick-reference. I am definitely glad I got this book.
One of the best books ever.......2005-05-19
Whatever you think about OSHO, you should read this book. It is the most concise entry to his thought currently available and I do not know why it--OSHO-- is not more widely hailed and regarded. OSHO is a spiritual master and clearly enlightened being who can bring great benefits to your soul. If you are interested in the work of Osho, however, I also recommend you read Samael Aun Weor. Their work compliments each other, even though it is of a very different nature. This work belongs beside the Bible in terms of both interest and importance. Many people do not realize that Osho isn't just your average philosophy professor, let alone guru, and he probably read more books than anyone alive. For this reason alone, everyone can benefit from his thought--which, again, is most concisely presented in this book.

Nothing Here but Darned Good Antipasto.......2006-07-16
Seven years ago my husband Dub and I sailed into Whangarai Harbour in New Zealand. On our way in I spied some friends or ours, Gayle and John, who we'd met in Tahiti. They were Kiwis and they were ending their five year circumnavigation, home at last. We anchored close to their boat and later dinghied over for sundowners (usually Coke and Rum). That evening, as usual, we told tall tales of our adventures at sea and we congratulated ourselves on being in this wonderful place at this wonderful time. Later, as we were saying our goodbyes, Gayle gave me her set of the Salamandar Book of Series Cookbooks. They are sold by HP Books in the States as paperbacks. Gayle carried these books around the planet and now she was giving them to me, complete with her notes (written in the books) on the recipes, how well she and John liked certain dishes, which were their favorites, how hard they were to prepare. She knew I was a cook and she thought I'd appreciate them. She was right.
Like all the books in the series "The Book of Antipasti" is about five inches wide and about a foot tall, making them kind of unique among cookbooks. But one should not be put off because of the odd shape, these are real books and you can find mighty darned good recipes in them and if you're into Italian, then try this book, because it's full of delicious antipasto(i) recipes. Serve some of these up before that all American spaghetti and meat balls and your family will think you're a real Italian chef. The Broccoli & Prosciutto on Page 20 is to die for. The Venetian Chicken Salad on Page 67 was apparently Gayle and John's favorite dish in the book and though it's awfully good, Dub and I would have to vote for the Stuffed Chiles on Page 98. I don't think there's a bad dish in the book, nothing here by darned good antipasto.

Great introduction........2003-01-13
In its almost 50 parts, all written by experienced cooks and cook book writers, HP Books' "The Book of ... Cooking" series takes you to the cuisines of various regions of the U.S. and around the world; all in easy to follow, well-explained recipes.
This installment, the Book of Antipasti, starts with a glossary of ingredients, and then presents recipe suggestions from vegetable antipasti and salads to breads and pastries. Special chapters are dedicated to fish and shellfish, meats, sausages, cheese and egg dishes. Classics such as breadsticks, bresaola, bruschetta al pomodoro, carpaccio, focaccia, frittata, marinated olives and mushrooms, tuna salad and walnut bread appear next to unique dishes such as arugula and pine nut salad, chicken and grape salad, marinated soft cheese, prosciutto with figs, and veal and spinach terrine.
From asparagus and egg salad to zucchini with garlic, this collection of recipes, while not all-encompassing, is a great introduction to the endless possibilities of starting a meal - and at a relative bargain price, to boot. Also recommended, particularly for fans of Italian cooking: This series' installments on pasta, light pasta sauces and pizzas and Italian breads.

Three Star Michelin chef Heinz Beck is not one to underestimate a first impression. He welcomes guests to Rome's famed La Pergola restaurant with 'amuse bouches' that never fail to surprise and delight. Prepared with the same meticulous attention that is lavashed on every other course, these inviting little bites communicate Beck's philosophy in miniature form, the elements of his signature style - creative presentation, contrasting textures and extraordinary lightness - are clearly evident, even when he is working on such a small scale.
In this book Beck offers over forty recipes for his favorite finger food in forms ranging from the classic (bruschette, kebabs) to the inspired (cones, spoons, shots). Superbly photographed by Janez Puksic, these images demonstrate that even a tiny portion can make an enormous visual impact, riveting a diner's attention even before he takes a single bite. And after that fatal first encounter there is no turning back.
Cheese Pralines with Caviar, Lemon Ginger Sardines, Shallots Stuffed with Venison Ragout, Won-Ton Bundles with Tuna and Peppers, baccalà Foam with Olives and Tomatoes, lemongrass granita with Scampi and Avocado. Each and every one is utterly irresistible.

Book Description
Collectors around the world have enjoyed the animals figurines created by Royal Doulton for over a century. The 3rd edition of The charlton Standard Catalogue of Royal
Doulton Animals has been updated to include the new models introduced over the past few years, and to reflect the current market value of all Doulton animal figurines.
The three new series added to the 3rd edition are: The Charles Noke Collection, a tribute to Noke, whose classic model of a Polar Bear Monter and Her Cub was remodelled in 2001, by Robert Tabbenor, and issued in a limited edition of 200; the second series, modelled by Alan Maslankowski, Art is Life, contains beautifully sculpted animals such as wolves, bears, and horses; the third series, Burslem Artwares, contains the majestic flambé T'ang Horse and several other flambé pieces.
What appears to be the most buoyant niche in the Animal market today is the stoneware models of mice and frogs created by George Tinworth. The prices realized of these classic sculptures seem to escalate continuously when they appear at auction. There are well over 60 models created by

Book Description
The eighth edition of Storybook Figurines, A "Charlton Standard Catalogue," is completely updated with recent releases and current market values. Royal Doulton, Royal Albert, and Beswick storybook figurines are illustrated and their technical data listed.
Thirty-two colour plates are disbursed throughout the book in eight page sections. The first two sections, or 16 pages, are devoted to the figures of Beatrix Potter. Almost all `BP' figures, along with their varieties (177 individual images) are illustrated to assist in identifying the different characters in your collection. The third 8-page colour section, is devoted to Jill Barklem's Brambly Hedge storybook figures, 68 individual images, which may be used by the collector to assist in building a meaningful collection. The final eight page colour section covers the Royal Doulton issues of the Winnie the Pooh collection, 69 figures are illustrated in this group.
The main body of the catalogue, which includes the black and white images, the technical data, and prices, has been reviewed and updated to bring it current to 2005. Eight new releases were added to the Brambly Hedge chapter, while nine were added to the Winnie the Pooh section. Millennium Collectables added three new releases to their popular line of 20th Century Advertising Collectables.
The fast moving collectable market, brought on by the on-line auctions, is instrumental in the Storybook catalogue now being published on an annual basis. Price movements now dictate that if collectors wish to be current, they must have a current program.

Would not recommend.......2006-07-28
I work as a teacher at a small Bay Area school and I was looking for an eye-catching tool for my students to learn about the world of graphic design. They are young and somewhat impressionable.
Suffice to say this book is not it. The style of writing is boring and the pace tepid. I also purchased Mr. Gomez's other graphic design book and found the content to be similar.
