Set during the high-hippie era of the 1970s, Little Miss Strange is a story about a girl growing up to be a woman, but it's about growing up in a period of American life when the adults don't seem to play any of the traditional roles of caretakers or parents. Sarajean is the daughter of hippies--which is to say, of uncertain parentage--and must negotiate the strangeness of life in the rootless world into which she was born. She lives with a guy who may be her father and comes of age in the commune world of drugs, poverty, and the dropout-ethic that marks the times.

3 out of 5 stars Could have been better.......2006-08-17

It's a fast easy read but I was disappointed. I felt there was so much potential with the characters in the book but it didn't go anywhere. I've met lots of young people who had parents like the adults in this story. Mothers and fathers who wasn't active in their children's life if they were around at all. Kids need and want supervision. Some like Sarajean will look for it and some will act out like Lelana.

5 out of 5 stars Little Miss Strange.......2001-12-31

Little Miss Strange, is a wonderful and intriguing novel. It has captured the minds of many young people everywhere. It has a feeling of home and abandon. New thoughts come out of the book as you read and visualize what Joanna Rose paints in her mind. The first few chapters opens you up to a new world, a diffrent world where the young and old are united. Some parts of the books were graphic, but that was only the realistic veiws of inspiration. Other parts of the book were confusing, but it became clear later. The book itself was VERY wonderful. Personally, I think Joanna Rose should have contuined it as a series.

5 out of 5 stars A decade to envy!.......2001-04-19

There's not much I can say that hasn't already been well-said by the other reviewers. If you've ever felt cheated because you missed out on the seventies, here's your chance to experience them for yourself. Although Sarajean is too young to know the sex, drugs, and rock-and-roll of the era, she sees the effects of excess in her home and her surroundings. Living with a man who is supposedly her father and desperately searching for a mother figure, Sarajean glides through her world with conflicting thoughts and feelings. You'll follow Sarajean on her journey of discovery and revel in her stories of adventure, loss, and acceptance. Join Sarajean as she attends the freedom school, gets into trouble with her wild best friend, and has her first crush on a neighborhood boy. This book is filled with charming vignettes as well as heartbreaking scenes where Sarajean must come to terms with her family situation. Like another reviewer, I was really sad to see this book end. I only wish the author would consider a sequal!

5 out of 5 stars You won't forget this book!.......2001-02-20

This was the first book I read for fun after I finished college, and I was hooked! Following Sarajean from kindergarten through adolescence is a trip you'll be glad you took. It is suprising, interesting and even a little disturbing to grow with Sarajean. The characters that surround her are just as interesting and help the reader experience, not just read. Don't miss this novel!

5 out of 5 stars Guten.......2001-01-14

I think this book is in some ways like a guide through adolescence. I really liked reading it, and I was slightly sad when it was over. I think we can all find a little bit of ourselves in the book's main character. It's quite a delightful read.

Book Description

Aari has returned! Now he and his lifemate, the brave and beautiful Acorna, can finish rebuilding their once-decimated homeworld. Yet Aari's travels through time have left him oddly changed, and he barely remembers Acorna or their love. And as Aari's actions turn more sinister, Acorna must shift her attention to stopping the destruction of innocents by a vicious criminal. It is precisely the sort of weakness and confusion the dreaded Khleevi have been hoping for, as the brutal insectile oppressors set in motion their final invasion and the total destruction of the Linyaari and the conquest of their world. Though Acorna's heart is wounded, her courage and determination must remain strong in this dark time -- for only then will she be able to rescue the Aari she knows and adores, and halt the bloodthirsty alien menace for good and for all.

5 out of 5 stars Even the best books can annoying.......2006-10-12

This book--and, indeed, the entire acorna series--is amazing, don't get me wrong. But I, being the sciency type, got a bit annoyed with it. Throughout the entire series, you are exposed to technical and science experiences, and most of them are definately plausible, if not probable, such as sentient creatures being out there somewhere. However, in this book, and the previous book, there is another concept: time travel. Time travel, even though it seems like it could be possible, is NOT, no matter what we do. We can't go back and change things. Maybe forward in time, but not backwards, and this bugged me, as the entire book is based on time travel. Also, even if time travel WERE possible, the way it is in this book doesn't seem likely: someone being stuck in a different time. I like the way JK Rowling writes time travel, with everything they did in the past already THERE (as in, Harry sees himself across the lake), whereas here, it's all changeable. And also, in Harry Potter, it's magic, so it's all possible.
But other than that, this is an amazing book. I sucked the entire series dry in less than a week. It's one where you become anxious about what's happening to characters. I love it, even with the time travel thing. And that's saying a lot--the time travel thing really annoyed me, so the rest of the series/book more than made up for it :D

Enjoy an awsome book, unless you're a scientist!

4 out of 5 stars pretty good conclusion.......2004-11-21

I enjoyed the twist in the story, it kept it from being too predictable, everything turns out ok but it does make you wonder if it will, which keeps you reading. I enjoyed it but you could never read it if you hadn't read the others in the series.

2 out of 5 stars Happy Ending but so many Plot Holes.......2004-09-01

Like many others I have enjoyed the Acorna series for years. I started when I was a kid and have looked forwarding avidly to each new book being released. I'm afraid all my waiting was a bit of a let down this time.

While the book was an enjoyable read, it didn't really have the same viseral appeal of the other few books. It was very much like eating a large amount of cotton candy, you may like it at the time but you beginning to doubt how wise a chioce it all was towards the end. While not something I was hoping for it wasn't something I take major points away for, even I love a happy ending.

What truly got to me was the rules set down about time travel in the previous books were basically ignored and tossed aside. It seemed to me that two books back, "Acorna's Search" if I remember correctly, it was basically established that even though you didn't know you were going to effect the past you already had. As established by the rock paintings already being there about what Acorna had done in the past. Here in "Triumph" that is ignored with people and objects suddenly appearing where they should have easily already been discovered.

Also I am confused as to why people bother to appear later on in the time stream from when they left. Why didn't Grimalkin just appear right after Aari left Acorna the first time? Why wait all those many months? Though I must thank him because I enjoyed "Acorna's Rebels". They explained this away with the double helix which only makes a moderate amount of sense considering all the other time sliding they did. The concept of time being a double helix, while interesting, seems to need more thought to it.

All in all I enjoyed this book and the entire series. It became a bit heavy in the story book ending feel but was still enjoyable, I just wish a few more of the concepts were either explained or atleast stuck to in their original forms. It does seem to me with so many unanswered questions that we might see further works in this world maybe centered around a second generation? That I think I shall enjoy reading. But even if not it was a fun, if sweet, ride while it lasted.

3 out of 5 stars Targeted To Younger Readers.......2004-03-19

Acorna's Truimph is the seventh and final book in the Acorna series by Anne McCaffrey and Elizabeth Ann Scarborough. Acorna is a young linyaari (a humanoid-unicorn species) who was raised by humans. In previous books, she has had many adventures to be reunited with the other linyaari and free their home planet from the insect-like khleevi. In Acorna's Truimph, Acorna is reunited with her missing lifemate Aari who has been time-traveling with the feline shape-changer Grimalkin. Acorna bounces from one crisis to another across space and time, chasing thieves and rescuing people, all while trying to solve the mystery of Aari's strange behavior.

The plot reads like a series of television episodes -- each crisis is neatly wrapped up and then the characters move on to the next adventure. Several of the supporting characters aren't much more than cliches and even the main characters seem shallow at times. However, it is entertaining in a tongue-in-cheek kind of way and the action does bop along fairly swiftly.

This light-hearted jaunt through space and time with almost-magical unicorn people will mostly appeal to young adults. Older readers might want to try Scarborough's Nothing Sacred or books from McCaffrey's Pern series.

3 out of 5 stars Abrupt, choppy, and in the end . . ........2004-03-15

The one word I find that comes to mind to describe this book is, unsatisfying. I've loved the Acorna books since the very beginning, but I've found that the last few were disappointing, and Acorna's Triumph was no exception.
The story was light, and missing the detail and emotion that I'd grown to expect from the Acorna series. The storyline itself was so flighty, jumping around from one time to another with no purpose, but rather with the randomness of a bad dream. The ability to move from time to time so easily cheapened all of the struggles that the characters had gone through before.
And was it just me, or were there some strange gaps in the story?
Okay, here I'm going to mention a few things that may spoil the story for those who haven't read it yet. Sorry, but I feel I must.
The fact that characters such as Aari's brother, and Acorna's parents even! were brought back in with such casual disregard for how their deaths had shaped the story up to that point was shocking to me. That, and other events that had no point but bringing in a few seemingly random characters to be used for one transparent purpose or another, made it feel like the Authors were trying up loose ends, and neatening everything up for a fairy-tale happy ending. And the reason that was so disappointing to me was that the Acorna series had never been a run-of-the-mill fairy tale, where everything is always perfect.
And now, the thing that bothered me the most. Throughout the whole series, Acorna has always been in charge of her own destiny. But suddenly, there is an unseen manipulater behind the scenes, making everything just the way he wants it.
It just seems to me that maybe the series was simply running out of steam, to use so many obvious shortcuts to bring things to a happy conclusion.
But you'll notice at the top, I gave it three stars. And that's because, in spite of everything, I still love Acorna, her people, and her world.
Plus, I have to admit, sometimes I'm a sucker for a happy ending. Even if it's missing some of the trials and triumph that I'd enjoyed, and respected, in the books preceading it, there's still something about Acorna' Triumph that makes you smile.

This book is well written but it has one problem. The action in the book takes place in a simulator. I had already had enough of this when Peter David wrote Worf's First Adventure. Somehow it isn't as fun or exciting if you know the battle isn't real.

2 out of 5 stars Fancy soup names that don't inspire.......2005-02-17

I am an avid cook who cooks at least once a day - and usually a dish I have never made before. Consequently, I thought that this book would increase the number of recipes to be tried by quite a bit and was very exited to recieve it. Obviously, as my 2 star rating suggests, my expectations were not met - and here is why:

True to the name of the book, Gillespie does include a plethora of recipes - I didn't count them but I'm pretty confident that the number must be 365 or at least close. However, almost none of the recipes sound as though they might actually be delicious. I found them to be rather uninspired and uninspiring and keep thinking that Gillespie sacrificed the idea of good and wholesome soup for being as fancy and innovative as possible. The overabundance of "fancy" soup is rather burdensome when you are simply looking for a straightforward soup. The back-cover for example, lists several recipes that fall into this category - Brandied Strawberry Soup, Chocolate Mint Soup, etc. just don't do it for me.

When I finally managed to locate a recipe that sounded like I would enjoy it, I had to discover that some of the listed ingredients never showed up in the actual recipe - this should have been caught by an editor. The soup, however, turned out quite well once I had figured out when to add the missing igredients.

Unfortunately, there is more: Gillespie likes to included such illustrious items as dried potato buds, dried onions, etc. to his recipes - I would think that cooking involves fresh ingredients when available. While I understand that not everyone can get fresh galangal and that, therefore, it is helpful to used dried galangal in recipes, last time I checked, potatoes and onions were readily available pretty much anywhere.

In addition, several recipes list chicken stock or fish sauce as ingredients (sometimes optional, sometimes as an alternative for a vegetarian item). Personally, if you publish a vegetarian cookbook, I want to see vegetarian ingredients only.

And finally, one recepie had me laughing in disbelief. Gillespie lists a recipe for a "Super Fast Soup.: Now, if you were in the market for a super-fast soup, what would you do? I'd open a can of soup - and so would Gillespie. To make it a real recipe in his book, he suggests adding frozen veggies and water. Wow, I am so glad I have a cookbook to guide me through this difficult process.Unbelievable.

As is now truly obvious, I do not like this book and I will certainly not recommend it. There are much better soup books avaliable and unless you are on a quest to own every single vegetarian soup cook book ever published, I would strongly advise you to stay clear of this book

                5 out of 5 stars I really like soup..........2003-01-02

...especially when the weather turns cold in the fall and throughout the winter and early spring months. Most of the soups that I prepare are simple and nutritious. And while I enjoy the few soups that I regularly make, I wanted to expand my collection of recipes. So I was delighted to receive a copy of 365 Vegetarian Soups. Think of it, a different soup for every day of the year!

Gregg R. Gillespie's soup recipes are contained in the following sections: vegetable stocks, basic soups, fruit soups, cream soups, hearty soups, chilled soups and dessert soups. The ingredient lists and directions are well laid out and easy to follow. Each recipe also contains the number of servings.

As the title states, the recipes are vegetarian, not vegan. While some of the recipes can be easily modified for vegan diets, others containing several dairy products will be more difficult to modify. There are some recipes, like Ginger Melon Soup and Vegetable Soup With Lemon & Mint that require no alterations for vegans. And with 365 recipes, there are sure to be numerous recipes that everyone will enjoy.

Wasn't as extensive as I would have hoped, I might have been expecting too much, and didn't contain alot of jars available on the market. But what it did contain was very good and I found very useful.

This book was not helpful at all. I have many older McCoy cookie jars and none of them were listed. This book mainly has new cookie jars listed. So if you are looking for a price guide for older jars this is not the book.

Found this extremely helpful, especially the photographs. I was thankful for pricing guidance that the author also included. Information of the backgrounds of the manufacturers was interesting but a found a few that were too brief to nothing at all. When selling these jars it is always good to be able to pass on that type of information to the buyer. History was not covered in this book as this was the 3rd book covering the subject. I found this to be a very valuable reference tool to have available.

This is the 3rd edition of the popular book, featuring more than 1,800 large, sharp full color photos in its 360 pages. No repeats from the prior editions. There is not much in the way of background information, but loads of beautiful pictures, descriptions and prices. A complete index makes it easy to find the jars you're interested in. If you like to look at cookie jars, you'll love this picture encyclopedia.

                  Book Description

Rompers and booties and cute animal designs: there’s nothing more adorable than babies’ outfits, and these small and precious garments make easy-to-carry and quick-to-knit projects. That’s why Vogue’s first Knitting on the Go: Baby Knits collection was so popular—and why this follow-up will absolutely entice knitters and warm their hearts as the needles click along. What could be sweeter than a tiny “faux fur” coat? Amazingly, it’s simple to make, with only a few stitches and rows; the thick yarn does most of the work. Baby will look completely endearing in an Origami Jacket, Giraffe Cardigan and Hat, Aran Pullover, or Bonnet and Booties. Other practical and good-looking accessories include the Felted Baby Bag to carry it all and a Gingham Blanket.

3 out of 5 stars Not a great book, but okay..........2007-04-01

This book has a couple of projects (baby oragami jacket and baby bunny jacket) that are very darling and I have made many times. My major beef with it, especially on the baby bunny jacket, is that no time was taken to produce simpler instructions when there was clearly an opportunity to do so. No one wants to seam 7 pieces together, pick up and knit miles of i-cord and tuck in a zillion ends for a jacket that will fit a child for 6 months, if that. Over time, I have modified the patterns to eliminate seams and ends and it's definitely possible. Maybe Vogue should come out with "Baby Knits Two: Patterns Revisited and Rethought".

4 out of 5 stars Some cute projects.......2004-08-19

The beauty of this book is its tiny size and quickness of projects. The first few pages are dedicated to a quick review of knitting, and then the fun begins. Items include a romper and overalls, some sweaters, cute-as-a-button moccasins, a felted baby bag, baby hats, booties, stuffed bears wearing pajamas, and a blanket. I feel that there's a project for everyone here: they have cable work, felting, stripes, color work, one sweater is a classic Aran Isle style and another uses the Fair Isle technique, and there's also a traditional baby-sized argyle vest. A few items are clearly for girls, like a ruffle-edged dress, but most are unisex. Depending on the project, there are items here to fit 3-24 months.

I have bought several of the Vogue Knitting on the Go books, and have liked them all. This is no exception. The pictures are large and clear, and the directions are very straightforward. The designs included are charming, and it is easy to find a project that is appealing. The book is also compact, and easily carried. What more could a knitter ask for?

Seeing this book makes me wonder what they will come up with for the toddler and teens books. I really liked the inclusion of the toy panda. Would have been nice to have some custom booties patterns.

                  4 out of 5 stars Baby Knits.......2001-05-02

As an avid knitter, I am enjoying this book very much. My best friend just had a baby girl and I love all of the patterns. The only thing that disappointed me is that they did not show a yarn sample like "Vogue Knitting" magazine does. (That really helps when selecting your yarn). Otherwise, I love it!

4 out of 5 stars The title is perhaps a bit misleading........2001-02-27

This is my first in the "Knitting on the Go" series, and I had expected the designs to be somewhat less complicated. While small enough to fit into your bag and carry along, most of them are too involved to pick up and work while waiting on line. That said, its still a nice book, some awfully cute patterns, particularily for little girls. The chenille princess coat and the silk party dress are especially lovely -- though be prepared to make some yarn substitutions or take out a second mortgage on the house.

4 out of 5 stars Great selection of patterns for children.......2001-01-10

This is my first experience knitting something from Vogue and I have found it to be quite rewarding. I am now on my fifth project. The directions are sometimes a bit tricky, and the yarns often require substitution, but if you have some experience knitting, you'll be able to handle it. I love the styles, and have never seen such a selection for babies. It's great for learning new techniques, since each project is small. I have done intarsia, fair isle, Aran, and plain old cotton stripes. Give it a try if you knit for little ones.
