A postmodern Mary Shelley, taking the parable of Frankenstein's monster several giant steps farther, might have written this fable of a novel about a tragic race of monster dogs--in this case, genetically and biomechanically engineered dogs (of several major breeds). Created by a German mad scientist in the 19th century, the monster dogs possess human intelligence, speak human language, have prosthetic humanlike hands and walk upright on hind legs. The dogs' descendants arrive in New York City in the year 2008, still acting like Victorian-era aristocrats. Most important, the monster dogs suffer humanlike frailties and, ultimately, real suffering more serious and affecting than the subject matter might at first glance suggest.

Creepy. Strange. Cool. .......2007-08-27
"Lives of the Monster Dogs" is an easy read that somehow managed to creep me out. The prose flowed. The descriptions were beautiful. It felt...sad, for the most part. I wouldn't call it uplifting. I would call it lovely, though, and tragic. I enjoyed meeting the monster dogs. If you like Twilight Zone-esque works of freaky fiction, sit down and have a look.
A first rate piece of dark fantasy.......2007-06-09
On November 8, 2008, Cleo Pira, the principal narrator of Lives of the Monster Dogs, aimlessly wanders the streets of New York City. Depressed due to a breakup with her boyfriend, she barely notices the hubbub surrounding the arrival of a helicopter bearing Klaue Lutz, an ambassador for what amounts to a new species--150 genetically and surgically altered English-speaking canines who walk upright, a group subsequently labeled "the Monster Dogs" by the press.
The Monster Dogs are the brainchild of Augustus Rank, a Prussian scientist born in 1864. From an early age, Rank was fascinated by anatomy, performing surgery on a succession of increasingly larger animals. After a particularly heinous experiment on a cow at age 13, Rank, rather than being thrown in jail or an insane asylum, instead becomes the protégé of Dr. Buxtorf, a professor of surgery at the University of Basel. Rank flourishes in this academic atmosphere, eventually drawing the attention of the future Kaiser Wilhelm II, who enlists him in an effort to create an army of fierce, aggressive and loyal super soldiers.
Rank hits on the idea of creating canine commandos, and toils for the next fifteen years on the project without success. After a disagreement with Wilhelm, Rank flees to Canada. There, he founds Rankstadt, where, over the next seventy years, his followers strive to achieve his dream, finally succeeding in 1969. The villagers are proud of their achievement, little realizing they have created the means of their own destruction. Sick of their life of servitude, the Dogs rebel, slaying their human masters.
The Dogs travel to New York City, which in their minds has come to have an almost mystical significance. Due to their novelty, old world dress and manners, and Cleo's flattering newspaper articles, they become celebrities. Their future looks bright, but only for a short time, as several of their number are stricken with a disease that causes them to revert to their more primitive states. They work feverishly to solve this dilemma, but it appears it is only a matter of time until the entire group succumbs to this malady.
The novel includes three distinct narratives. First is a biography of Augustus Rank, written by Ludwig Van Sacher, chief historian of the Dogs, in an attempt to understand his creator. Second is a history of the Dogs in New York, written by an anguished Cleo, trying to cope with the tragedy that befell her friends. Finally, there is an oddly entertaining libretto (penned by a bull terrier) describing the bloodbath at Rankstadt. Bakis weaves these stories together with considerable skill, involving the reader on a very personal level. Cleo's growing attachment to these strange beings is well rendered, as is her despair as she watches her good friend Ludwig deteriorate from the canine equivalent of Alzheimer's disease.
Lives of the Monster Dogs is consistently engaging and entertaining, a thoughtful reflection on love, celebrity and humanity. Fans of genre fiction may find it interesting that this novel was marketed as mainstream fiction, rather than as fantasy, science fiction or horror; those influences are obvious, and make the book the delight it is. This means the book is sure to be missed by many who would appreciate it, but this is typical, as publishers still seem uncomfortable using genre labels (for instance, what is Cormac McCarthy's The Road, if not science fiction?). Hopefully this book will continue to find its true audience, and be acknowledged for what it is--a first rate piece of dark fantasy.
My favorite book of the 90's.......2006-11-26
I just reread this book for the third time the other night. It remains my favorite book of the 90's by far -- gothic horror at its best -- and by gothic horror, I mean the type that leaves you emotionally drained by the end of the book, and as empathic of the antagonist as the protagonist. "It's a terrible thing to be a dog, and know it." Read it, enjoy it, and read it again. I have given a copy of this book to so many people now as I gift that I have lost count.
Good Job!!!.......2006-05-08
I am amazed by the polarity of the reviews for this book. Some reviewers find her prose noxious- I find Ms. Bakis to be a highly skilled writer- The story is brought forward using a series of diaries and letters, a news paper story, a Vanity Fair article, and the libretto of an Opera. All of these different documents rang true for me.
Beyond the question of technical skill, the story actually impacted my dreams. As I was reading it, I was cognizant of reading one of the best books I have ever read. I loved the juxtoposition of the costumed Dogs (which have the potential to be sort of silly- like dogs do) and this stunning sense of tragedy- how fragile and beautiful things are- and what happens to them when time rolls on?
I don't know if this review will help you- It seems you will either love Monster Dogs or absolutely hate it- but you won't be unmoved by it.
Terrible writing.......2006-03-19
I'm not the sort that logs on to websites to write bad reviews for the sake of slamming authors, but this novel is horribly written and among the worst I've read. As others have mentioned, the plot is full of holes and loose ends that are poorely accounted for. I agree with others who have said that New York's ability to accept rich, upright walking, talking dogs because New Yorkers are more hip is absurd and insulting. Equally insulting is the fact that this idiotic book won the Bram Stoker award. Go pick something, anything, else. For example, Harlan Ellison's "A Boy and his Dog."
Customer Reviews:
A Fantastic Read.......2007-08-29
I may have just read one of my favorite books of all time, ascending immediately to the pantheon, and I've had an unusually good run of books this summer. I want everyone I know to read it.
I'm not an avid reader of the sword-and-sorcery type of fantasy, but there's a kind of reality-based fantasy that sometimes blows me away with the wild confidence of its creation. World-building doesn't attract me as much as speculation about what our own world might look like with one aspect changed, or the effort to fit one fantastic fact into the world we know.
Lives of the Monster Dogs takes place in New York City in 2008, when a group of about 150 genetically-altered intelligent dogs arrive on a plane from who-knows-where. The dogs walk on their hind legs, wear Victorian clothing and have prosthetic hands and voice boxes. They are also very wealthy. They take New York, home of so many other freaks and misfits, by storm. The story is told by Cleo Pira, a young writer who befriends one of the dogs and carries out his project of telling their story once he cannot finish it. The mystery and sadness of their origin and their questionable future speaks to the loneliness of the human species as well as their own.

Where oh where to begin.......2006-11-17
At first I was a little hesitant to pick this up, there is, in my mind, a ling line of collaborations with but a few shining starts among them, but Goldens prior work got the better of me. I am so glad I got this.
At first it was your run of the mill supra-natural super powered thriller, the end is known but in these it all about the journey. And then the writing came shining through. I meant to read a single chapter the night I finished this book! But alas I could not.
The chapters leave off like cliff hangers forcing you to read the next one and then the next and you have no choice but to keep plowing through and then Bam! You are done.
The characters could have used a little more, Clay would be a phenomenal stand alone as well as Doyle's love life. But all in all the mix is perfect, a perfect fit to eat a night of your life and leave you wishing and begging for the second, and a third and with luck a whole complimentary for many years.
Awesome and exciting reading here, folks!.......2005-10-22
This debut novel by these two writers made me want more afterwards.
If you liked the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen movie - then you'll absolutely go ga-ga over this. Engaging characters and excellent world-building.
A must read. Lordy, Hollywood, make a movie of this why don't you?!
Golden and Sniegoski do it again!.......2005-09-20
This book is one of the best I've read in quite some time. I love how the authors used many of the more classic kinds of monsters and mythological races to come together into a fighting team. Can't wait for the rest of the series!
Boston Be "Nimble".......2005-08-22
Bad guys, beware - The good guys (and girls) have gathered in Boston, and they will defeat you swiftly and nimbly.
The Menagerie is made up of legendary characters, each with his or her own powers and mystical, mythical origins. Christopher Golden and Thomas E. Sniegoski have taken various characters well-known from literature and mythology and made them their own. Eve is not only what readers assume she is, but also a vampire. She is a ferocious female who takes no prisoners - and happens to have a keen fashion sense. Ceridwen is elemental and strong, but vastly different from Eve in her speech and in her approach to situations. Doyle, the leader, is intelligent and powerful but also has human traits and flaws, making him more believable and likable than the foreman of other series.
The Nimble Man is a great introduction. It blends many genres together, sure to please fans of fantasy, action, science fiction, and mystery alike. The writing is rich in description, placing the reader right in the middle of the action sequences. The third person narrative permits the reader to get into the heads of these widely different characters, ranging from the immortal shapeshifter Clay to the confused changeling teenager Danny, from the specter of Dr. Graves to the shadowy hobgoblin (and chauffeur) Squire.
The Nimble Man starts The Menagerie series off with a bang. Fans of X-Men and The League of Extraordinary Gentleman will certainly love this team. Highly recommended.
Great Light Reading- emphasis on Light.......2004-12-13
I thoroughly enjoyed this book; it's great light reading for a rainy weekend. This book is the first in a new series about the Menegerie. To me, it's totally parallel to League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, but I digress... The central character of the group is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (yes, Sherlock Holmes author) who in this series is a powerful wizard. Being a magus, Doyle has prolonged his life span, so he exists in modern times. He's spent many years searching for his old master, the archmage Sanguedolce; mainly because he learned the forces of evil have been searching for Sanguedolce as well. Doyle doesn't know why the dark side is looking for the archmage, but he's determined to reach him first. On a side note, no one knows why Sanguedolce chose to disappear in the first place- this is an issue Doyle intends to resolve as well. The story opens with Doyle and the vampire, Eve (yes, Garden of Eden evictee), in a museum preparing to borrow a magical item that will locate Sanguedolce. The usage of the item is successful, so Doyle and Eve meet up with Doyle's chauffeur and weapons master, Squire (who is a hobgoblin with a potty mouth), and they take off to the location (which is conveniently within driving distance). Maybe I'm too traditional, but I would think an archmage who witnessed the Twilight Wars of Faerie would have sequestered himself in Atlantis, or Babylon or even on another plane altogether- but no, he's in Boston. Doyle and Eve eventually arrive at Sanguedolce's resting place (the archmage is in a state of suspended animation and has entombed himself within a huge sarcophagus of amber). However, an army of evil Fey arrive and make off with the sarcophagus. Doyle, Eve and Squire return to Doyle's house to regroup. While this is going on, we're also being aquainted with Clay- known as "The Clay of God", he was the clay God used to create every entity known to man (and a few unknown to man). Thus Clay can assume any of these shapes at will. And we meet Dr. Leonard Graves, who was a famous adventurer and scientist in his lifetime. Now he is a spirit determined to solve his own murder mystery. And we are also introduced to Danny, a teenager who is suffering the worst case of puberty ever- he's turning into a demon. And we thought we had it bad in high school... Doyle also makes a journey to Faerie to bring Princess Ceridwen, his ex, into the group. While there, he learns that Faerie has been attacked by Ceridwen's evil aunt Morrigan. Meanwhile, the human world is in chaos- frogs raining from the sky, bloody fog, raised dead, children vomiting up maggots; but Doyle takes it all in without so much of a twitch of his moustache. While Doyle is in Faerie, Squire remains in the house, while the rest of the group takes off on numerous errands (and these ancient entities are so obedient to a mortal man; another oddity)- then Morrigan invades Doyle's home. And as another reviewer mentioned, what's up with the black leather catsuit? I realize black garments and a taste for S&M usually indicates a villain in popular fiction, but I would have liked to see something different. She does this because the portal Doyle used to access Faerie is in his house, so Morrigan intends to destroy the portal and strand Doyle on the other side. She also has in her service the evil Fey who took the sarcophagus; so they haul in the archmage, and set up base in Doyle's house. Predictably, Doyle and Ceridwen return to the human world via a secret portal, and the party moves their own base of operations to Danny's house (much to his mother's chagrin). Through various avenues they determine that the mayhem in the world are the portents of the Nimble Man; him being an insane fallen angel who is imprisoned in Limbo. Morrigan is a religious fanatic who is dedicated to this angel, and she intends to tap into the inert Sanguedolce's power to bring the Nimble Man to the human world. Not good. So it would seem our group of heroes has their work cut out for them. Out of the entire party, Ceridwen suffered the most, and yet her battle was the most challenging and interesting. Danny the young demon (who'd never fought before) grabbed a fire drake in mid-swoop and wrung its neck like a professional. Clay pummeled a giant night hag, and suffered nary a scratch. Dr Graves obliterated a pair of demon dogs by shooting them with his spirit pistols (they died by the ectoplasmic bullets). Doyle took out two ancient Fey warriors in a sword battle with ease (I would think he would have been injured somewhat in this fight, but no). And even the climatic battle with the Nimble Man himself was over within a minute. And we're informed at the end another threat looms on the horizon (to be known in future novels) that will make the Nimble Man look like "a mere mote in comparison." WELL... I don't think our mighty Menegerie should have anything to worry about! The coming battle should last no more than five minutes! This Menegerie reminds me of player characters created by power gamers that I play D&D with. No matter what the DM comes up with, they wade through every challenge without so much as losing a drop of sweat. People may think I hated this novel: Not true- I did like it, but I was nonetheless disappointed. I realize the party is supposed to win; but so easily? It was over so quick, what were the characters so scared of? Three-quarters of the novel was spent with them getting acquainted, with half of the final quarter consisting of them storming Doyle's house, and the last bit has Doyle shove the Nimble Man back into Limbo. And with the Nimble Man making such a hasty entry and departure, the title of the book should have been, "Morrigan". She was the primary villain here. I wanted to see the fallen angel come into the world and level a city, at least! Show us some unholy power! Overall, this book as I said, is good for a rainy weekend when you're just looking for mindless entertainment. The ideas here are great, and I like the occultnik history involved. To me though, this book was more intended to introduce the Menegerie, than really challenge them.

Customer Reviews:
great memories of Icees,candy, and 20cent comics.......2007-04-25
Sure the stories are corny and this has little other than the name to do with "Star Trek", but these were fun to read as a kid and they are still fun now. Great for fans or kids who grew up in the 70's.
Gold Key Classic Retro Trek .......2005-12-16
When Trek historians look at these comics, they will probably say the Gold Key comics kept a few kids dreams of Trek alive until the first film. While not the best written comics, the title did feature some outstanding art. It didn't always capture the classic characters, however the spirit of the show was always there for young readers. If you grew up in the 1970's, you'll remember these classic comics. A lot of them were reprints of past issues. My guess is that the artist or writer did not make the deadlines so a reprint was issued in some months.
I have used the art in this series as a reference for drawing the classic cast when I was a youngster. The poses do reflect a lot of the action that took place in the original series plots.
Wolverine creator Len Wein even wrote a few of these classics. Too bad the credits were never printed in the Marvel style. I might have picked up a few more issues if I was aware the original comics were authored by Len.
This is a collection for anyone who likes the Star Trek series. The plots are not exactly "logical", but they are a lot of fun to read.

Sharon O'Connor is a San Francisco-based musician and entrepreneur who matches delectable recipes from significant restaurants with music to suit them in one convenient package. The result is a fine gift idea--or a nice treat for anyone who likes to check out menus (or even try whipping up a few recipes) while listening to good music. Most of O'Connor's previous productions featured her own San Francisco String Quartet; this book comes instead with a compact disc of arias (in older recordings by outstanding artists now, for the most part, retired) chosen by members of the Metropolitan Opera Guild. The recipes are from assorted high-profile Manhattan restaurants. And though the disc opens with the "Brindisi," or drinking song, from Verdi's La Traviata, most of the other selections have little or nothing to do with food and beverages--or their consumption. No matter, it's still a lot of fun. One warning: the cookbook itself contains the only guide to the identity of the voices on the CD, and that can be somewhat aggravating for listeners with only the CD in hand trying to figure out just which tenor or soprano is performing. --Sarah Bryan Miller

Costume Jewelry Variations: A Collector's Identification and Price Guide (Paperback).......2005-09-28
I echo the previous review. I bought the book last year and was very disappointed. I felt as if I got ripped off. The quality of the book was poor. Images were bad and blurry & black and white. There is no rhyme or reason for the book to even be printed. It did not add anything to the information out there on costume jewelry. Save your money.
Worst jewelry book I have ever seen.......2005-01-16
I have about 40 books on jewelry and this is the absolute worst one I have ever seen.........what a waste of money! Half of the pictures are so out of focus that you cannot see any details on the jewelry, most pictures are in black and white, there are no dates, and any information in this book you can find in almost any other book on costume jewelry. I wouldn't advise that anyone, even beginners to collecting, spend their money on this book.........there are too many good books on the subject! Buy any other book rather than this one.

Real Magic.......2007-06-23
I found this poor orphan in the bottom of a forgotten pile of "do-it-yourself" books in a second hand store. I glanced through it, realized I had a treasure, and clutched it to my bosom. Not only is it filled with bargello designs and borders, but it shows how a single pattern with the right color changes can look like no less than 10 totally different patterns! The instructions are clear, the text is both readable and instructive, and there are lots and lots of color pictures. This is a book to look for if you have any interest in bargello at all!

Book Description
Documenting an exhibition of the same name, Inside Space showcases the work of six international artists and groups--Elmgreen & Dragset, Teresita Fernandez, Henrik Oleson, Oona Stern, Monica Bonvicini, Juan Maidagan, and Dolores Zinny--all of whom problematize the basic concept of a ''room'' by variously deconstructing, reiterating, materially re-gendering, duplicating, de-rationalizing, de-functionalizing, or disorienting the visitor within them. All of the artists here are equally informed by art and architecture, and Inside Space explores the limits between these two media by presenting the artists' work in architectural-style documentation. Reproduced here are working drawings, photographs of the artists supervising the building and installation of their works, and two views of each finished piece. Inside Space addresses one of the main shifts in the visual arts over the past several years--the increasing propensity of artists to work outside of their field of specialty, delving into such areas as furniture design, animation, and gardening. This ''hybrid'' show and catalogue is a crucial document of artists dealing with built interior space.

Book Description
- Only book currently available offering an overview of H G Wells as a literary figure.
- It is written by a leading authority on H G Wells.
- Includes a useful reference section which is of value to the student and general reader interested in Wells and his world.
H.G. Wells was a novelist, journalist, sociologist and historian and A Preface to H.G. Wells begins by outlining his life, including his childhood and education, as well as his influences. There follows a section of critical commentary which examines, among others, his science fiction and social novels, the narrative voice and particular attention is paid to The Time Machine and Tono-Bungay. Concluding is an examination of his literary reputation. 'This little book is imbued with the qualities that will ensure for H G Wells a lasting place in literary history: a sense of wonder, poetic imagination, vivid narrative power and the gift of compelling belief. Above all it epitomizes that ability to create a myth of enduring relevance to the human condition which may yet prove to be his finest contribution to life and thought.' -- From the introduction to A Preface to H.G. Wells
