Chapter 1.......2004-10-19

I'm a fan of Chaykin's graphic style, and this is an interesting idea: combining superhero comics with a dual-identity romance (an plotline used many times before.)

As a superhero comic, it's a little uninspired. Neither the villains, nor their counterfeiting scheme, are compelling. Chaykin himself admits he cribbed their scheme from some old move. Why not something that directly endangers the people of the city these heroes protect?

The two heroes aren't noteworthy either. You have to have some pretty deep psychosexual weirdness to put on a costume and go out every night and fight people, but the encounter between them reads more like people who meet over coffee. These are highly aggressive thrill junkies bent on forcing the world to meet their expectations. They're not going to be sexually coy with one another.

Also, just a pet peeve: The female crimefighter wears a fishnet mask over her mouth, yet she apparently eats without taking it off. Maybe she can put french fries through the holes one at a time, but a burger?

There's also no good reason that this was sold as hardcover, which just tacks a few more dollars onto the price.

Mighty Love could work if this is only chapter one of the relationship between the two heroes, and the later installments have them in conflict. If they become enemies, that's when we'll see some real sparks.

.....just spectacular in it's normalcy. There is no over-the-top drama, no ludicrous personal situations. Just a well-written story about two ordinary people, Adrienne and Mel, who seem to have the perfect marriage and family. Until the day that tragedy strikes, and the unthinkable happens. The sorrow, depression and guilt experienced by both sends Adrienne and Mel on their own personal, downward spiral....and threatens to destroy their marriage.
A wonderful, poignantly ordinary story filled with ordinary characters that readers can sympathize and possibly empathize with; a pageturner.

This was, indeed, a dramatic change in tall, good looking Mel's life. What had caused it? He met Adrienne and his feelings for her were unlike those he had ever felt for another woman. A MIGHTY LOVE is the second book that I've read by Anita Doreen Diggs. I've come to enjoy her writing style. In her debut novel, Diggs has created two unforgettable characters, Mel and Adrienne Johnson.
Readers will be drawn into the story immediately.

Adrienne put her career on hold for her family. As the years go by, she questions that decision and a part of her regrets it. When the pressures of life become too much for Mel to handle, he finds himself not only fighting for his marriage, but for his life. The story follows each one as they deal with the ups and downs of their relationship. The actions of the characters will draw out a full gamut of emotions.

If you are looking for an entertaining, yet different type of relationship novel, then don't hesitate to add A MIGHTY LOVE by Anita Diggs to your collection. After reading A Mighty Love, you must also check out her second novel - A MEETING IN THE LADIES ROOM.

Bad Boy Meets Good Girl.......2004-02-20

Mel is a bad boy trying to make good. Adrienne is a good girl who falls whole-heartily for Mel. Author Anita Doreen Diggs introduces us to this seemingly unlikely couple and their families in "A Mighty Love." Mel, a reformed player and notorious partier from the wrong side of the tracks meets beautiful, sweet Adrienne, an aspiring singer. Soon after, he decides to put his former life behind him and build a new one with Adrienne.

The novel opens in the beginning of their marriage. Mel and Adrienne are living happily in their small apartment in New York with their baby daughter. Adrienne has given up on her career as a singer and is now working as a secretary in corporate America. Mel drives a bus. They live blissfully until an unexpected tragedy threatens to tear their lives apart.

In an effort to console himself about the tragedy and remove his guilt, Mel returns to his old habits of drinking, womanizing and occasional drug use. Adrienne, equally hurt, begins to seek solace in shopping, filling herself up with new suits, make-up and cds.

The book offers a candid look at a couple trying their best to stay together in spite of the surprises along the way, including a new boss, who threatens to end it all. The book is a wonderful and surprisingly unique look at a couple trying to leave behind bad memories and temptations from their pasts to rebuild the future they envisioned for themselves.

Good start, poor book........2005-12-14

The start of the book is ok. Anything about the silver sisters is somewhat interesting. The only problem is there is so much randomness going on in the book that it is hard to follow. Ed Greenwood is not the greatest writer, and I agree with others that anyone looking for a good fantasy book should look elsewhere. Too much random nudity, destruction, and plot lines.

... Ed Greenwood has little grasp of plot, charachter development, or suspense. This book reads like a fifth grade book report. It is definately the worst of the Harper series and one of the worst books in the Forgotten Rhealms setting.

I'v read lots Fantasy books and on StormLight I had no clue what was going on. I don't even know Storm's personalty. It's like just reading about some one whos talking in a boring voice. All i got was that her sister was a floting head .

But if you want to read it I think you shouldn't.

No Greenwood's best, but..........2000-10-09

Though the characters are a little flat and the plot a simplistic, the book was still a good read. The story has everything that a TSR book should, including the the dim but honourable soldiers, egotistic wizards, a sexy heroine who is almost godlike, and of course the all powerfull villian. But that is also the books problem because it becomes too pridictable and repetative in some of the action sequences.

flat and predictable, even for Greenwood.......2000-07-20

If you are among those hoping that Ed Greenwood will develop his characters more as time goes on, Stormlight is sure to disappoint. In it, Storm Silverhand becomes involved in a scheme by a dead god to revive himself. (Those who have read TSR's Lost Gods offerings will find this a familiar theme, though Stormlight is not part of that series.) Despite several interesting moments, Stormlight falls short on at least two counts.

First, Greenwood's characters continue to develop in raw power without any concurrent personality development. Even though she is likely the least powerful of the Seven Sisters, Storm is revealed to be a near-god by the end of this novel: she has lived for centuries; she has allies among the kings and archwizards throughout the land (and drops their names liberally in her dialogue); and, though not a wizard, she exhibits practically undefeatable spell-like abilities. Meanwhile, her personality remains shallow and inconsistent, e.g. bemoaning the fate of a long lost love at times and flirting with various male characters at others. Sadly, we learn very little of her past, or her connection to Elminster, Mystra, or her sisters.

Second, the plot has roughly 75 pages worth of substance, but the author presses the formulaic battle-then-regroup button long enough to churn out the requisite 312 page TSR novel. A potentially interesting secondary villain is quickly introduced then defeated by characters only peripherally involved in this novel, leaving the reader to wonder if interesting subplots have been deliberately clipped out by a sadistic editor.

this book is verry helpful to help you to ask yourself some good questions regarding your inner journey. It hilights many potential pittfals encountered in the transpersonal practices and anchor them in a tentative new encompassing approach.

The most important point for me, after two years of practice of holotropic breathwork, was the dangers of an approach too exclusively experiential, which is common in the transpersonal field. That is the belief that experiences in themselves contain healing potential and spriritual progress. the emphasis on experience was necessary for a time for the transpersonal field to be accepted by the scientific community as the study of non ordinary state of consciousness. but the quest for experience can easily turn into an addiction to temporary high spiritual states without being intergrated into the daily life, but not without inflation of the ego... as in the case of many psychonautes exclusively using psychedelic substance. traditionnaly, experiences are only one of the many ingredients nessary for a fruitful spiritual practice, which come along with intelectual studies, respect of ethic principles, relationships in a shangha or group of practicionner and with a teacher of master.

another interesting point is the new and refreshing ways to account for the diversity of spiritual systems. contrary to Wilber who is caught in an objectivist view where he posit a hierarchy between the different system, and hence a definit objective abolute truth about the ultimate, Ferrer argue for a diversity of ways of unfolding the truth of the universe, which are neither hierarchically organised, neither reductible to each other. This is a very healthy view that gives theorical grounding to a real respect but also curiosity as a basic attitude for the relationships between poeple beloging to different spiritual schools.

This is a book to read for anybody involved in the modern sprititual quest where one often mixes many different practices : a lot of buddhist meditation, a good deal of hata yoga, some christian devotion, without forgetting the nessesary participation to shamanic entheogenic rituals... it is a very useful tools to clarify one's own goals in the practice.

but it is definitely a scholar book which speaks of philosophical controverseries and need some efforts to be read.

A Different Approach.......2003-12-15

This was a difficult book for the first reading because I was not familiar with much of the information cited by Ferrer. It is not because the book is poorly written, just because it was new. There are many things to think about while reading the book. This is not a Washburn or Wilber spin off but something entirely different. Ferrer does a great job in presenting an original perspective in transpersonal theory. A must have book for the transpersonal theorist.

Ponder on This.......2003-12-01

When I first read this book I hated it, but I have read and studied it for 2 years and find it one of the best books ever written on transpersonal psychology. Be sure that you get the reference book Ferrer references because his thesis will make much more sense. You may not agree with everything he states, but is a very significant book for those who question their own beliefs. A must read.

The subtitle for Joan Hassol's Well Preserved reads, "A Jam-making Hymnal." This is aptly so, since the book is much more than a cookbook. Hassol wants to impart more than the simple knowledge of how to make jams; she wants the reader to understand them. Hassol's own jam business, Well Preserved, was an outgrowth of her lifelong passion for the fruits of her native New England, and what she has learned in life and business is collected in this volume. As a result, the approach is personal--full of great opinions, good advice, and, incidentally, wonderful jam recipes. As in anything with nature and fruit, the approach must be seasonal. The book is divided by season and includes the chutneys and marmalades of winter along with the jams of spring and summer, followed naturally by a section on breads and muffins on which to spread your new creations. Flowing throughout the book are Hassol's reflections on the bounties of the land and the people who have made the journey with her. Great book for beginners.......2005-09-10

This was a great book for beginners in canning. It gave detailed instructions for all the steps of canning.

best jam/jelly book I've used.......2003-07-17

The best grape jam I've made. The best strawberry jam I've made. The best pear ginger jam I've made. I can keep going. This book has simple short lists of ingredients, lucid and basic instructions, and enough unique jam varieties to please any cook.

Her prose style invites reading and re-reading of the recipes, to the point where you make the jam with the ingredients in mind but actually *pay attention* to the cooking process. I have learned to watch the consistency change...thick and quiescent, then simmering, then boiling, then the beautiful last metamorphosis where everything gets crystal clear and you know the jam is done.

If you have never made jam before, this is a perfect book to start with. It's a warm intimate manual rather than a sterile cookbook. However, as other reviews have pointed out, I would suggest watching your sugar and pectin amounts. Hassol can be a bit...overzealous with those ingredients. But hey, one batch really isn't all that big and if you goof it up you will learn for the next batch. Try with something simple like grape jam, with such a short cheap list of ingredients that you can afford to lose a batch or two. I've also found that making notes in the margins is a great way to remember what you wanted to change for the next time.

Unfortunately Hassol passed away a few years ago, so this is her only book. I wish there had been more.

Some of her recipes have worked for me. Others I have had to adjust: they are too thick (too much pectin?) and / or the sugar doesn't completely dissolve (too much sugar?). It's an idea book and a trial and error book for me. I am so relieved to read the other reviews regarding the amount of sugar and pectin.

This isn't a book for a brand new jam maker -- in my opinion,the recipes are too 'hit or miss.'

I first saw one of Ms. Hassol's recipes in the New York Times and made it immediately - it was the peach ginger marmalade. It was so successful, I immediately bought the book. Most of her combinations are quite inspired - although there are too many that rely on ginger - that I was inspired to try some of my own new concoctions. However, I agree with other reviewers that the 1.5 packets of pectin she recommends is too much. One is usually fine. Also, her sugar content is quite high. Comparing her recipes with others, they seem to be 1 and sometimes 2 cups too much. This results in the jam being so sweet that it hides the fruit flavors. I've cut back on both of these with great success.

beautifully, maybe it's because I'm an experienced jammer. This was
my first summer at the Farmer's Market as a vendor of jams and
jellies, baked goods, flowers and berries, and I found her
observations and musings on her experiences there very similar to my
own. Well worth the read and inspirational for the beginning jam

I found this book very helpful in learning to use all of Painter's features effectively. It was easy to read & has lots of good photos. My only wish is that it had more accurate instructions on using the CD.

My favorite section was on the Painter pallets. It shows example pictures for each "brush" & it's variants. Sample photos also showed the various options available in the gradient box. These made it far easier to know what tool to use.

Other sections of the book covered masking, image hose use, painting & composite techniques, special effects, working with type, enhancing & outputting images, animation & web application, and using Painter with other programs.

The CD contains some good movies on making blobs, creating an image hose from a floater, building and editing floaters maps and making mosaic or patterned type. It also includes tutorials on making movies & working with color.

It's an incredible book! A must-have for all Painter users. The book contains step by step instructions to create amazing effects seen on fully colored pictures.
