Emer Martin's second novel is an emotional roller coaster with tracks laid across the entire planet, from Ireland to Japan to the United States to Central America. Keelin, the youngest of five children, is dispatched by her mother to find the eldest daughter, Aisling, who's been missing for over 15 years. Her journey forces her to confront the obsessive-compulsive behavior of herself and her siblings, who tag along for parts of the trip or monitor her progress from afar. The colorful cast of characters (including a gay priest and a Japanese transvestite) is sure to strike a chord with anyone who's ever felt like an outcast and wished he or she could build a separate world someplace else.

Book Description

At high speed and with wicked humor, Emer Martin introduces us to a family unlike any other. Long after her husband is institutionalized, Molly moves her children from the west of Ireland to Dublin. She is following her eldest daughter Aisling --- her favorite, the beloved --- who is to attend college there. But one summer Aisling disappears. Fifteen years later, Molly persuades the youngest and most reliable of her five children, Keelin, to put her own life on hold to search for Aisling. Traveling the world with various of her siblings, Keelin learns that each is cursed with their father's affliction --- "the doubting disease," as they call it. In one way or another, each is paralyzed and compelled to perform irrational acts. In pursuit of her wild, elusive sister, whose personality defies categorization, Keelin takes on a hip and decadent Japan, a talk-show-worthy United States, and a surreal Central America. Many curious adventures, an uncertain reunion, and a stunning betrayal later, Keelin is forced to question the familial attachments that have always driven her. More Bread or I'll Appear casts a unique eye on the issues of gender, race, and class that are vital to contemporary culture. It is a story about family, an examination of the tyranny of genetic and emotional bonds.

5 out of 5 stars The Irish Diaspora meets the 21st Century.......2005-04-12

More Bread Or I'll Appear is a novel where the Irish Diaspora meets the 21st Century. Emer Martin takes one family and puts them on the world stage. She writes with a lovely Irish humor that can make light of the direst situations, which the book is full of. Illness, Compulsive Disorders, Teen Pregnancy, Alcoholism, Drug Addiction, Gay Child-Abusing Priests, AIDS, Kidnapping, Robbery, Prostitution, Compulsive Eating Disorders, Cross-Dressing, and Murder are all treated in a matter-of-fact way, but can at times make this a hard novel to get through. Yet the character development and the author's sensitive approach to the human situation make this a wonderful novel.

Emer Martin takes us into the lives of a dysfunctional, but strong and resilient family as each member faces a crisis in their lives and comes to terms with themselves and their situation. Not for the feint of heart, but still heart-warming, this is a novel that looks at the personal within a global setting.

The setting is global with the characters circling the globe in search of a missing sister. Ireland, New York, Japan, Hawaii, Las Vegas, Honduras, Mexico, and Cuba are all there and lend this novel a truly global perspective.

4 out of 5 stars A Family that Sticks Together?.......2003-02-08

Emer Martin's novel about the ups-and-downs of a dysfunctional Irish family is a new approach from her earlier work "Breakfast at Babylon." Martin examines human issues that brings about the saying: "a family that sticks together [doesn't always stay together]." The story focuses on a mother, Molly and her 5 children, Patrick, Aisling. Keelin, Siobhan and Orla.

Molly's husband becomes mentally ill and is institutionalized. Molly and the children move from west Ireland to Dublin. The eldest daughter Aisling attends college there. Molly follows her. Then one summer Aisling just disappears. It takes Molly 15 years later to presuade her youngest and reliable. Keelin and put her life on hold to search for Aisling. So Keelin sets off to travel the world with the other siblings. Keelin learns that each sibling is cursed with their father's affliction 'the doubting disease.' In some way and another each is ultimately compelled to perform irrational acts. In pursuit of her wild, elusive sister. Whose personality defies any description. Keelin takes on a very chic and decadent Japan, a talk show diverse United States and an incongruous Central America. There are many questionable adventures.. what follows is an uncertain reunion and a surprising betrayal. Keelin questions the family attachments that have driven her to the point of separation.

Martin's work casts a unique ego on vital issues of gender, race and class. Though it's primarily a story about family. It sheds some light on what some family's face within their circle. The domination of genetic and emotional bonds, the struggle for individuality and the difficulty of love. If you like reading about the quirkness and social norms in family relationships I suggest this.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2001-02-04

Emer Martin has written one of the most interesting and engaging books I have read in years. The book is funny and intelligent, and the characters are vivid and unique. I would highly recommend it to anyone that wants to get a glimpse of the various corners of the world visited in this book from a very hip point of view.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fabulous.......2001-01-25

Having read Emer Martins first novel, Breakfast in Babylon, (which is highly recommended), I waited with baited breath for her next book. Follow up books from new authors can often be disappointing at the least, however, I was pleasantly suprised at the consistancy in Ms. Martin's talents as a young author. The story although tragic, is written with warmth and an understanding that is rarely seen in modern literature. There is greatness in this book and something for everybody.

        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Just another FR novel.......2007-02-03

As you can see from the title of this review, this book has nothing unique or memorable in it. It's not a bad novel, far from it, but it is simply ordinary, too ordinary maybe.

As ever, Byers offers us a steady and straightforward plot without many surprises and twists in it. A priestess of Umberlee from Myth Nantar wants to bring worshippers back to her deity's empty temples, and decides she should try and stop a rage of dragons ravaging Seros, or Sea of Fallen Stars, as it is better known. Fate (or Umberlee's will) brings her across a spy from Turmish, and together they seek the Cult of the Dragon hideout amidst Seros' numerous islands. The main character (the priestess, whatever her name is) is a fiery zealot at times and at other times a cold and calculating person. It kind of contradicts each other. Anton, the above mentioned Turmian spy, is a type of character that pops up in each of Byers' books - a cunning survivor. The rest of the characters are pretty bleak. It's worth the mention that some of them appear in Mel Odom's trilogy "Threat from the Sea", taking part in the same part of Faerun.

Although almost all elements in this book are average, I do have some minor complaints. Byers' doesn't bother much with descriptions of places and people characters visit, and the book is short in realmslore. Odom did that much better in his books. Of course, he had 900+ pages to fit it in, as opposed to 309 in this book. Besides that, the characters have a prophetic touch to them, or more specifically even their wildest assumptions always turn out to be true. It takes a bit off realism and overall quality of this book.

All in all, I would describe this one as a hybrid between "Threat from the Sea" and "Year of Rogue Dragons" trilogies. If you consider underwater combat and lots of dragons interesting, you should enjoy this book. I didn't. A mediocre FR novel.

3 out of 5 stars it's ok, but not great.......2006-12-13

it's a cute little book that kept my attention but didn't have any shining moments or gripping plotlines to get more than 3 stars.

        3 out of 5 stars So-so.......2006-03-16

While not too interesting, it still had a few spots of interest. The flow of the book was good but it needed more plot depth and developement for me to really get into it. Overall, I liked it.

If you like books like this one, might I suggest another I've recently come across. The Unsuspecting Mage by Brian S. Pratt. It's another fantasy adventure sure to please. I highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars A book with little identity.......2005-09-22

When I first say this book and who it was written by, Richard Byers - author of the Year of the Rogue Dragon series- I was looking forward to it as I like his writing style. The Preiest books, 4 in all, are a series of stand alone novels about various deities int he Forgotten Realms. With the title of this book Queen of the Depths I knew right away it would be about Umberlee and would focus a lot on the underwater life of the realms.

I will talk about the story, plot, first.

After reading the prologue I was worried about this book. Right away we are reading about mad dragons underwater attacking a underwater city. I inwardly groaned, as this is the stuff Mr. Byers covers in the Rogue Dragoe series. These are supposed to be stand alone novels - maybe a small time in to another Realms event would have been better - but not the Realms Shaking Event currently taking place. So, I quietly hoped this was an abonimation and the Dragones would be gone, and maybe the plot would focus on the destruction caused and such. No such luck, it centers around the Cult of the Dragon having a secret base and finding it. As with all my reviews I won't give spoilers here, but I just felt people need to know this is almost a continuation of the Rogue Dragon series, just with different characters.

The characters were ok at best. Initially, they seemed to be rather deep characters, yet the further I read into the book they never really seemed to develop... they just were. From the time I started the book until I ended it I felt, character wise, that I read a short story because the characters didn't grow or anything. They were simple 2-D cut-outs of characters you could find in a source book. I didn't like them at all. My last complaint about the characters is ***be warned some may consider this a small spoiler***

One of the two main characters, Tu'ala'keth is the preistess of Umberlee and all through the book she is cold, unforgiving and accepting of death. The author tries to make her out as a hardass that just does Umberlee's work. Sure, fine, works for me. Yet the last scene of the book what does the author have her do? She HUGS the human that she has basically dragged through all this. She HUGS him... why? Why was this scene there, based on her character this should never have happened. There was a scene ealier in the book where she says she doesn't like to be touched by humans... so she ends up hugging one. Makes no sense to me.

All the above is not to say this book doesn't have some value. It's not a bad book, it just has so many flaws that to someone who reads a lot of Fotrgotten Realms books I expected something totlally different than what I got.

I try to end my reviews by either recommending the book or not recommending it. For this one I would not actively recommend it to most people, as I think there are better books to read out there. Yet, I will say this, if you are a fan of the Year of the Rogue Dragon series - you should probably read this book. If you are a fan of dragon books you should like this just fine. Don't expect great characters or a great plot, but it's an ok read at best.

          Book Description

From the Great Panathenaea of ancient Greece to the hajj of today, people of all religions and cultures have made sacred journeys to confirm their faith and their part in a larger identity. This book is a fascinating guide through the vast and varied cultural territory such pilgrimages have covered across the ages. The first book to look at the phenomenon and experience of pilgrimage through the multiple lenses of history, religion, sociology, anthropology, and art history, this sumptuously illustrated volume explores the full richness and range of sacred travel as it maps the cultural imagination.

The authors consider pilgrimage as a physical journey through time and space, but also as a metaphorical passage resonant with meaning on many levels. It may entail a ritual transformation of the pilgrim's inner state or outer status; it may be a quest for a transcendent goal; it may involve the healing of a physical or spiritual ailment. Through folktales, narratives of the crusades, and the firsthand accounts of those who have made these journeys; through descriptions and pictures of the rituals, holy objects, and sacred architecture they have encountered, as well as the relics and talismans they have carried home, Pilgrimage evokes the physical and spiritual landscape these seekers have traveled. In its structure, the book broadly moves from those religions--Judaism, Christianity, and Islam--that cohere around a single canonical text to those with a multiplicity of sacred scriptures, like Hinduism and Buddhism. Juxtaposing the different practices and experiences of pilgrimage in these contexts, this book reveals the common structures and singular features of sacred travel from ancient times to our own.

          Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A helpful survey of pilgrimage in world religions.......2000-12-02

The concept of 'Pilgrimage' is a universal one common to all the religions. As an outward expression of one's inner faith such sacred journeys are encourged in all the religions. This ritual also offers layers of meaning for an earnest pilgrim. The authors attempt successsfully to trace the origin and development of the theology and practice of such pilgrimages in the different world religions like Judaism, Islam, Christianity and Hinduism. A separate chapter is devoted most appropriately, to the Indian religions. A student would find the book very valuable and a pilgrim would be fascinated by the information. The book is illustrated with beautiful photographs from various parts of the world.

                Book Description

This three-part volume begins with the history, emphasizing the contributions and innovations of the different owners of Metlox Potteries and exploring the major developments. Next is a massive section on the dinnerware lines, chronologically listing every item of each pattern by name and division. The backstamps and current values are also included, as well as manufacturing and a survey of the most collectible patterns. Finally, the artware lines: the famous Walt Disney figurines, Nostalgia Lines, Art Treasures of the World, Poppets and Toppets, and cookie jars, for example. This new hardbound book also holds over 300 original Metlox color brochures and pamphlets and over 700 full color photos.2001 values. AUTHORBIO: Carl Gibbs was an avid collector of various items, from 1950s furniture to art pottery, to dinnerware, especially hand-painted dinnerware. He evolved from collecting to selling dinnerware through the mail, to running The California Connection Dinnerware Shop. He loves discovering new patterns and learning about them through this business. He authored two editions of Collector's Encyclopedia of Metlox Potteries. REVIEW: This book shares a wealth of information concerning the Prouty years at Metlox. Although the first edition of the book included a full and complete survey of the Shaw years, this second edition delves more into the Prouty dinnerware and artware. Many new photographs and updated values are included.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive book of Metlox Pottery !.......1999-11-10

This book is the definitive work on Metlox Pottery. It's a "must have" for the collector and enjoyable reading for the person wishing to learn more about California pottery. Full of hundreds of pictures and values, this book is an invaluable guide and resource.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond my expectations.......1999-06-25

I purchased this book to clear up my conception of some of the Metlox patterns but it opened my eyes to some very collectible pieces that I had been over looking. Nice pictures with several styles in each catagory that eliminates the guess work. As a beginner collector of Metlox I am truly please with this book.

                3 out of 5 stars A little disappointed.......2007-07-12

When I ordered this "book" I was expecting a few practical tests to get myself ready for the State Exam. Not only were there only 2 practice tests, but the other part of the "book", which is no bigger than a Playbill, were chapter reviews that I did in school. Quite disappointing to pay $45 for 2 practice tests which did not include any questions about Pennsylvania code. I understand that this book was a general book created for any state, but perhaps Mylady could create one for each state. Here's hoping I pass anyway.

I loved this study guide. I went throught a long and lengthy nail course (which is much more than most Utah nail tech's), Jan. 1 2002, we all needed to be licesned. We could then be grandfathered in. During the month of December, I split up with my husband and moved therefor I did not get my info in on time. Luckily the State of Utah was somewhat sympathetic and they allowed me to license only if I passed the practical ans state exam. I desperate for study material. As with most Nail schools, we borrowed the text. This guide is great.

                      Book Description

As a major advance in the study of medieval piety the interrelationship between the veneration of relics and of the Eucharistic Host is presented here for the first time. Traced through Christian Antiquity and the early Middle Ages, the veneration of the Host proves to be closely associated with the piety focused on relics of the Saints. Both were kept in the sleeping area of private homes, carried on journeys and placed in graves. They were buried together in altar tables and monks called on both for help in threatening circumstances. Like the relics, the sacred Host was later carried in procession, shown to the people for veneration and used to give blessings. This book offers a rich account of one of the most revealing dimensions of medieval belief and practice.

                          Book Description

Ann Sheridan came to Hollywood in 1933 as a finalist in a beauty contest, a publicity stunt for Paramount's Search for Beauty. Of the 30 contestants who appeared in the picture and the 6 finalists whom Paramount put under contract, she was the only one to achieve stardom. Her films included Angels with Dirty Faces (1938), They Drive by Night (1940), Kings Row (1942), and Come Next Spring (1956). Through the years, she appeared on stage and on many radio and television programs. As with her film career, her broadcasting work was diverse, including appearances in dramas, comedies, talk shows, variety revues, and game shows. In 1965 she joined the cast of Another World, thus becoming one of the first movie stars to appear in a soap opera. Her role led to a prime time series, the situation comedy Pistols 'n' Petticoats (1966-1967). She died during production. This reference book chronicles Ann Sheridan's fascinating life and career. The volume begins with a biography that traces her rise to stardom and her many successes in the entertainment world. A chronology then summarizes the most important events in her life. The chapters that follow provide detailed information for her work in films, radio, and television. Entries are provided for each of her performances, with each entry giving cast and credit information, a plot summary, excerpts from reviews, and critical commentary. The book also includes information about recordings of Sheridan's songs, the various awards and honors that she won, and magazine covers on which she appeared. The volume also presents an extensive annotated bibliography of works about Sheridan and lists sources of archival material.

5 out of 5 stars Admirable research and writing.......2007-01-10

This is the only book (so far) on the wonderful actress Ann Sheridan. Thank goodness it's good! Ms. Schultz did an excellent job researching Sheridan's personal life and career. Although this is not a biography but rather a guide to her career, the book does provide a brief biography with lots of quotes from Sheridan and colleagues. The flaws are the fault of the publisher--not the writer. There is only one photograph. Also, no attempt has been made to make the book appealing. The design is drap and unappealing. Greenwood should be ashamed to charge so much. Again, this is not the writer's fault. Hopefully, this able writer/researcher will find a better publisher next time.

                          5 out of 5 stars A superb record.......2006-03-04

Ann Sheridan, a great Warner Brothers film star of the forties, probably never received her due. She started as a beauty contest winner in 1933 at the age of 18, worked as an extra and in bit parts at Paramount Pictures, toiled in B pictures at Warner Brothers for a few years and finally hit the big time in 1939, mainly due to a publicity stunt whereby she became billed as the Oomph girl. She probably made more poor films than any other actress who reached the top. What a waste! She could sing, play both comedy and drama and projected a forthright image which was very attractive. Her performances in "Torrid Zone", "The Man who Came to Dinner", "Kings Row", City for Conquest" and a few others have stood the test of time.

Margie Shulz is the best of the bio bibliographers. She has done a superb job compiling not only the film career of Sheridan but also her work in stage and television until she died of cancer far too young in the mid sixties. Even though the book is really an index, Shulz has still managed to provide real insight into Sheridan's likeable personality in the biographical essay which begins the book.

All the books in this series are expensive but there is not much available on Sheridan except some great interviews so it is worth the price for any true fan.

4 out of 5 stars Everthing you ever wanted to know about Ann Sheridan!!!!.......1999-04-01

God bless Marge Shultz for shedding some light on the glamorous Ann Sheridan, a woman who had great talent to match her great sex appeal. This book tells you everything about Ann's upbringing, films(King's Row), television work (Pistols & Petticoats), and love life. My only complaints are the price($65.00), and the lack of pictures (A women as beautiful as Ann was warrents several pictures in a book about her!!!!). But overall Good Buy!!!
