5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2004-04-02

These are great books, however, the editorial review from kirkus is wrong. These novels may be technically two separate novels, but only in so far as they are two volumes. They are virtually incomprehensible apart from one another.
I don't see how you could make any sense of either book without having read them in sequence.
But it's an enchanting read - I could not bear a moment without Of Lodz and Love once I had finished Bociany.

5 out of 5 stars A "New" World.......2000-05-30

Discovering a "new" author is rather like discovering a new world. When this author has actually been around for a while, has already written a body of work, but has for some reason managed to escape our attention, this thrill can be even more intense, for a wealth of this writer's other books already exist, just waiting for us to find them. I had this experience recently in reading Chava Rosenfarb's two volume set, composed of Bociany and Of Lodz and Love, which the author herself recently translated from the Yiddish originals.

To say the least, finding a new Yiddish novel is a surprising event since most of us tend to think of such works as a legacy of past generations. It has now been half a century and more since the end of WWII. Most of the masters of this genre writing about the past glories of Eastern European Jewish life have died. But Rosenfarb, a survivor of Bergen-Belsen and Auschwitz who lives in Toronto, has apparently been winning acclaim for her works in Yiddish for some time although they have not found their way into the American mainstream book world --until now.

Reading Yiddish works by such masters as Isaac Bashevas Singer, Sholem Alechem, and I.L. Peretz has familiarized Americans with the vanished reality of life in the "shtetl," Eastern European ghettos that disappeared following the upheavals of WWII.

These novels resemble earlier Yiddish works in that they portray the panorama of life in a small Polish shtetl, Bociany, which was named for the storks that returned each year to nest in the village. Yet they differ from these earlier works in a number of important ways. Perhaps most significantly, these works have a wider scope than those earlier ones, including both the Jewish and Gentile population of Bociany and Lodz in the time just before the Russian Revolution to the end of WWII.

For the first time in a work of this kind, one gets a feeling for the delicate ecology of Jewish/Gentile relations at the time. Just as Faulkner gave us a portrait of the American South in which whites rely absolutely upon blacks, are raised by them and with them, and yet harbor a deep-seated fear of their difference, Rosenfarb shows us a world in which Polish peasants rely upon the Jews in their midst. Yet as in the South, this interdependence ultimately breeds contempt and violence rather than trust.

Rosenfarb personifies this confused ambivalence of the Polish peasantry towards the Jews in her character Vaslav Spokojny, the fire chief, whose surname, ironically, means "calm" or "peaceful." Though he excels at quelling physical flames, Spokojny's is a choleric, unstable temperament. He veers between an obsessive attachment to the Jews of the village and a dangerous drunken rage.

Stylistically, past Yiddish works have adhered to a linear narrative line and omniscient narration, as though it were only possible to tell these stories by maintaining a certain distance from these characters, forever preserved in their vanished world as within a glass dome. However, Rosenfarb's novels dare to explore the doubts and misgivings these characters feel, the untidy complexities of their world. They achieve this by weaving together four narrative strands, telling the story of two families, two generations of Jewish Bociany. In this way, the work's technique harks back to the great 19th century Russian tradition of Tolstoi, but with a difference. This is history from a Jewish --and not incidentally, female-- perspective.

We are very fortunate to have received these novels from the hand of the author herself while she is still alive. Perhaps, with their success, readers like us can induce American publishers to publish Rosenfarb's other, earlier works in English translation. Who knows what other writers, what lost worlds remain to be discovered?

4 out of 5 stars Solid start to a very promising saga.......2007-10-04

Skipping past the summary of the plot, which you can easily find elsewhere (among these very reviews actually), I'll provide a short personal analysis instead. This book, Karavans, is the first installment of a series that bears the same name, currently made up of 2 books with a 3rd on the way. It was an enjoyable read for 3 main reasons:

    1. The writing style is outstanding. It is mature, sophisticated and very descriptive, without being tedious. You get a very clear image of all the settings because the descriptions are so detailed, but it's never excessive. It is easy to concentrate, and thus not frustrating to read. Also, no character is dwelled on for too long at a time, so you revisit all the subplots frequently. Last but not least, it is not self-pretentious writing. I really thought the language was very sensible, and it did not resort to cheap tricks meant for shock value, so that was a huge bonus.

    2. The characters are well constructed. They are multi-dimensional and you can relate to them, a point which some authors struggle with. They have well-defined personalities; some are more complex than others, just like in real life, but they are all believable, and quite different from one another. Needless to say, they are interesting and make you want to find out more about them.

    3. The story is great. Seriously, this is hard work, not something coughed up on a whim. Some people say that the pace is a little slow. It certainly could be faster, but this first volume of the series is mostly a foundation for a storyline to be built on. But do not be alarmed, it is not stale or boring, because it is very well-written. And the story only gets better as it unfolds.

The book itself gets 4 well-earned stars; I have finished the sequel also, Deepwood, which allows me to recommend this book even more because the series is looking excellent at this point, so I really think you will be rewarded for investing in the experience.

5 out of 5 stars The Last Karavan.......2007-07-24

Karavans (2006) is the first fantasy novel in the Karavans series. Alisanos -- the Deepwoods -- is a place where demons live. If humans come close enough, demons capture them. Some humans return from Alisanos, but they have been changed. One such human is rejected by Alisanos and comes to the place of farewell in Sancorra where the karavans assemble before going elsewhere.

In this novel, Audrun is the wife of Davyn and the mother of Gillan, Ellica, Torvic and Megritte. She is bearing her fifth child. Their family has been burned out by the invading Hecari tribesmen and they are now fleeing to her kinfolk in Atalanda. After Davyn leaves to talk to Jorda -- the Master of the last karavan of the season -- Audrun and her children are the first to encounter the changed man from Alisanos.

Rhuan is a guide for Jorda's karavan. He is Shoia, not human, and can rise from the dead six times. Hearing that Dardannus -- the Kantic priest -- is divining with Shoia bones, he pays a little visit to the bone diviner. Dardannus sends him to Hezriah the bonedealer. Rhuan is confronting Hezriah when the man from Alisanos enters, faces him and falls down dead.

Brodhi is a courier and brings news to the place of farewell of the death of Sancorra of Sancorra at the hands of the Hecari. Brodhi is also Shoia, cousin to Rhuan -- their fathers are brothers -- but Brodhi and Rhuan do not get along with each other. Brodhi thinks Rhuan likes the humans too much and Rhuan thinks Brodhi is too disdainful of the humans. Rhuan and Brodhi are the only Shoia known to those in the settlement.

Ilona is one of the diviners in Jorda's karavan. One night she has a premonitory dream. Being only a reader of hands, she takes her dream to Lerin -- a dream-reader -- but the dream was too fragmentary to read as a whole. Yet Lerin does leave these fragments available to Ilona's waking mind.

Darmuth is a fellow guide and partner of Rhuan. Ferize is the wife of Brodhi. Yet both are demons from Alisanos, who are accompanying Brodhi and Rhuan in an oath quest.

In this story, Audrun and her family are accepted into the karavan despite the slowness of their oxen. They are assigned to the last position in the karavan, behind the Sisters of the Road. Although their oxen are slow, the lack of speed will not matter that much before they reach the turn off to Atalanda, where they will leave the karavan.

Rhuan tries to talk them out of taking that particular turn off to Atalanda. It is much too close to Alisanos and they will not have the protection of the others in the karavan. But Audrun and Davyn have been told by fourteen diviners that the baby must be born in Atalanda and so it will be.

This story describes a peaceful land being invaded by mounted tribesmen much like the Mongols. Their weapons may be different, but their methods are very similar. One of their tools is decimation, culling the settlements by killing one in ten.

Alisanos is located in another dimension with a gateway into the human world. This gateway is moved occasionally and humans caught by the move are changed. Sometimes humans are lured into the gateway and other times humans are hunted down by demons. The only thing worse for humans than dying in Alisanos is living there.

The ending of this novel leaves plenty of room for the sequel. The main characters are left in a fine mess. Hopefully things don't get even worse, but don't bet on it.

Highly recommended for Roberson fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of alien magic, human foolishness, and sheer perseverance.

    3 out of 5 stars Karavans.......2007-07-23

I have not finished the book yet, because it does not move fast enough,I am sure I will get back to it as i like the author, but so far it os average.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-06-12

I have always enjoyed Roberson's fantasy with full, expressive characters and unique plots with plenty of twists. She does not let the reader down in her new series. I dislike it when reviews give the plot of the book away therefore I will simply say you will not be disappointed with this book in the least! I would also recommend her other books such as the Cheysuli series.

3 out of 5 stars Watch out for DAW books - quality control issues.......2007-02-03

I have loved most of Roberson's books, they are just phenomenal. So, has anyone else noticed that DAW along with other publishers have switched to low quality materials for their hardcover books? Take a look at the paper for instance. Just compare this book and her earlier ones. You won't be thrilled in about 5 years, when the books in this series have begun to yellow with age while the older ones are still like almost new.
I hate this new trend with book publishers just to save a buck. None of us get a deal on the price, but they can sell inferior goods to us because they know we want to read the books anyway. Please watch out and if possible, complain to the company. If enough of us do, they will return to the quality we have come to expect. Shame on DAW!

5 out of 5 stars The beginning to a great saga........2004-11-29

I would recommend starting the Section 31 books with this one. In the DS9 episode "Inquisition" we were informed that Section 31 was on Starfleet's original charter, and was taken off. This book fills in the gap, giving the reader a window to see what happened in Kirk's day, and how the organization started. The storyline is engaging and you can't put it down! The Section 31 series shows what happens when people begin to think the ends always justify the means, and why that is completely unacceptable in a successful society. Once again, Trek has paralleled our current world with the world of the future. This book is the beginning of an excellent series, a must read for any Trek fan.

5 out of 5 stars Top notch original cast story.......2004-03-21

Few Star Trek novels have done a better job capturing the mysterious and slightly icy mood of the original series, a la first season, than this one. Highest possible recommendation.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Enterprise vs. Section 31, Sweeet!!!.......2004-03-09

This is a very short and enjoyable read that captures that nostalgic feel of the old series, where the characters come to life as they unravel the mystery of a secret organization with the "means and the motive" to carry out its agenda. Section 31 plays a background role here, as it works under the cloak of secrecy; major hints are put out as to how it operates in this time period, but nothing precise or revealing is documented.

I liked how the author delved into the personas of various characters, such as insights about Kirk's love affairs, McCoy's internal struggle with a terminal disease, and Spock's struggle to hold on to order when confronted with passionate feelings for a Romulan commander. We also view the typical Chekov traits on his colorful and naïve views for romance and his profound Russian pride; and we get a view of Uhura's background as she uses her little renowned cryptographic skills when she attempts to decode a disk.

With combination of Kirk's intuition and inquisitive nature to get to the truth and Spock's logical and thorough investigation and reasoning, combined with some luck, they are able to unravel the plot and prevent a catastrophe. In the end a major and extremely important clue is dropped as to how Section 31 came to exist.

Overall this is an enjoyable piece and very well written. I couldn't put the book down. I hope they come out with more books about Section 31, and I also hope to see more works by this author.

5 out of 5 stars The second best of the Section 31 series.......2001-12-11

I have found that most of the best Trek novels do one thing: they elaborate on already established novels and/or television episodes. This one does and also foreshadows the events of "For the Earth is Hollow and I have Touched the Sky." We see again the Romulan Commander whom Spock was drawn to in "Enterprise Incident," although she has never been given a name. We also learn about Dr. McCoy's fatal disease. However, in previous novels, didn't Bones have a daughter named Joanna? I know that the novels are not generally considered to be part of the overall Trek cannon but would it not be appropriate to include details as important as the existance of one's children in such an important time in one's life? Especially when the doctor felt that he had no family to tell about his illness.

3 out of 5 stars "OK Is The Best I Can Give It".......2001-12-03

The book deals with a secret experiment related to the TV episode where the Enterprise stole a Romulan cloaking device. It starts off very well as Kirk and co. must stop a runaway starship. And ending was also very exciting. But the middle of the book could have been better. Some parts were a little bit slow. Also there was no drama when Dr. McCoy comes down with a terminal disease. Please, you know he's not gonna die. I did like getting into the minds of the supporting characters like Uhura, Sulu and Chekov. Also some good scenes where Kirk's faith in Starfleet is really tested the more he uncovers about this illegal experiment. I just wish the author could have included more alien characters in the story. Like in Star Trek, all the crew members, all the starship captains and all the scientists are human. The Federation has over 600 planets. A little species variety, please.

      Book Description

For centuries the Chinese have consulted the I Ching both as an oracle and as a means of self-understanding.  The moral and psychological depth of its wisdom has been celebrated by its scholars, psychologists, poets, and scientists.  In this clear, immensely readable interpretation, Sam Reifler eliminates the obscure and dated references of previous translations to provide an accurate and accessible version of the ancient Chinese classic for the contemporary seeker.  With easy-to-follow instructions for using both the yarrow stick and the coin toss method, this new interpretation of the I Ching reveals the hidden forces at work in our relationships, our careers, and our emotional lives - and suggests new directions and choices for the future.

For everyone who seeks to better understand themselves and the world around them, this new translation of the I Ching is a practical and remarkably effective pathway to enlightenment.

1 out of 5 stars pompous confucian drivel.......2007-09-04

I've been doing this for twenty years and I've consulted enough versions of the i ching to know when I'm reading something where the commnentator is adding a bunch of baloney that doesn't belong there. that's what this is. the worst i chings are the ones overly influenced by the confucian school of thought and this is right up there as one of the worst--they tend to blame the querent for his own problems. "It's all YOUR fault that ---(fill in the blank). Yuck. The definitve one is by a guy named alfred huang and fortunately--he's actually chinese--he made all these weird, judgemental western aberrations obsolete.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best user friendly books on I Ching........2006-04-14

There are so many I Ching books to choose from out there but very few are easy to understand. This book is easy to understand. Its written in simple English so people of all ages should be able to use this book.

This book doesnt have several pages for each hexagram which makes asking for guidance a lot simpler than most other books. It can be used for all matters. It has more to offer than most I Ching books even though it has less pages. It still offers a great deal.

As a book for beginners I think this book is suitable.I would encourage people who are starting to learn I Ching to choose this book and at least one beginners book first. You will end up keeping this book for sure.

The quality of this book is very high.Printed on very high quality. The price itself is very good value too.Its really a good quality bargain. The cover is very appealling too.A little colour inside makes this book more interesting.Nice touch.Overall, this book is one of the best books for anyone interested in I Ching.I have yet to find a book that can offer as much as this book does for the same price and the same high quality in a book with less than 280 pages.

      I also recommend these books:
1)"Practical guide to the I Ching" By Kim-Anh Lim.
      2)Symbols of love".By Stephen Karcher.

5 out of 5 stars Simple to use and understand and very effective.......2005-08-19

I got my first copy of this book some 25 years ago. In the meantime, I have acquired many other versions, but one is still one of my favorites. I used to refer to it as "my second brain" because it has been a tremendous help for me for accessing higher wisdom and getting practical solutions to some challenges that bordered on impossible - finding a way when there seemed to be no way out. The wisdom and guidance from this book has enabled me to accomplish some things that were very important for me, but which I didn't have a clue where even to begin to turn into reality. It has helped me to turn some seemingly impossible dreams into reality. For this I am profoundly grateful to the author of this book.

I have started using this book when I was a teenager and when some other translations and interpretations of I Ching left me more confused, whereas this one provided easy to understand and straightforward counsel.

As you keep on working with I Ching, you begin to develop a "feel" for different hexagrams that goes beyond words and comes about through actual experience. In time, you don't have to read the interpretations any more because you have the knowingness of the meaning of each hexagram. In time, you may develop a greater and deeper relationship with your higher wisdom, and what you need to know will emerge into your conscious awareness through direct guidance, without the necessity of using outer oracles. But, until you learn to clearly discern the voice of your higher wisdom, I Ching can be tremendously helpful.

Other than the simple and easy to understand language of this book, I particularly appreciated that the interpretations of each hexagram are divided in three sections - related to your material life, to your love life and to your spiritual life. This makes the book even more "user friendly". I think that the book is particularly suitable and the best choice for someone who is new to working with the profound wisdom of I Ching.

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps my favorite translation.......2004-09-03

The copy I currently have of this book is from 1985, having worn out at least one previous copy. I'm delighted to see that it is still available, since I recently loaned my copy to my teenaged son, who was seeking an accessible translation of the I Ching. I was loath to let it leave the house until I verified that it could be replaced at Amazon.

The other reviewer is correct that the introduction is rather short for someone not already familiar with the I Ching (or at least divination systems in general), but it is sufficient to allow the user to dive right in. Each hexagram is given interpretations in modern English for the three critical areas of life that three quarters of all divination is done: "artha" (work), "kama" (love), and "moksha" (spirituality). Here's my only complaint then, for one on health would have covered that last quarter!

Despite the use of the three Sanscrit terms, the book is faithful to the Chinese cultural context of the I Ching and neither talks down to nor over the head of the reader. Anyone over the age of 14 should be able to read and use this book with success, though those under 30 may refuse to believe some of the practical but not-much-fun advice the oracle will dispense. It's like talking to a reasonably hip Chinese American grandfather. But I'll stop now, before I wax on and wax off too much....

5 out of 5 stars Modern Twist on an Ancient Classic.......2001-02-16

The translation of "I Ching" means "book of change", and this specific translation really captures the true spirit of the text. While the introduction is a bit short for those new to the subject, the rest of the book features interpretations which are very sharp and relate to a "western" point of view. Where many I Ching books have a specific focus (like the "Buddhist I Ching" or "the I Ching of Romance") each hexagram has three sets of interpretations which allow you to get a business, relationship or spiritual oriented take on any question. The insights are filled with many current references, and Reifler avoids the trap getting too "new age" or literal about his subject. Don't judge this book by the cover, it's a classic that has now been around for over 25 years. If you already own a translation or two of this book, you may want to think about adding this edition to your library.

4 out of 5 stars Is this the best we can do?.......2004-12-06

Many of the recipes in this book are very good, but some are only ok. There are some problems with some of them - for example the crepe recipe: it's way too thick. Perhaps the crepe recipe and the pancake recipe were reversed? There have been other errors in the recipes that make me want a better wheat-free cookbook. Where is it?

5 out of 5 stars This is my most-used cookbook.......2003-02-07

The recipes in this book are delicious and also well-written. Although there are recipes for many different types of food, my three favorites are for traditional "wheat-replacers": Spice Cake, Soup Dumplings, and Pizza Crust. I would agree with the other reviewer below that Dr. Fenster does tend to use too much sugar -- who puts sugar in pizza crust? But the recipes are very flexible, and I find if I change the amount of sugar, or add carrot shreddings to a cake, or cream cheese to a dumpling - the recipes still work great! I highly recommend this book, not only does it include a ton of gluten-free cooking advice, but also has non-dairy substitutes for every recipe. I also like that she writes, for example, "1 teaspoon GF vanilla" instead of simply "1 teaspoon vanilla." For the recently-diagnosed, this is a great reminder to check _all_ ingredients for gluten.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious Dining is really true!!.......2002-01-09

Carol Fenster has given all of us that must eat wheat and gluten free such a gift! The time that it must have taken her to perfect such wonderful recipes is truly something not many have the time or talent to do. She has covered just about everything to make eating wheat and gluten free most delicious, indeed! Besides the delicious recipes she has included menus for Quick and Easy Dinners, Reduced Fat, Low Calorie Meals, Fish & Seafood Menus, Poultry Menus, Southwestern Menus and Meatless Meals. And there are more treasures in the back of this great cookbook that are so helpful such as Wheat Flour Equivalents, Substitutes, HIdden Sources of Wheat, Mail-Order Sources etc. If you need to eat wheat or gluten free this cookbook just must be a part of your life! I wouldn't know what to do wtihout it! It surely is a "must buy" cookbook!

4 out of 5 stars Great buy for celiacs and those with gluten-intolerance!.......2001-07-24

This book is a great investment (and for those of us who live on gluten-free food, we all know how HARD it is to find anything for celiacs that's a bargain!)! It has over 200 recipies, but to be honest, there are a few that don't come out all that great. Still, a few out of 200 still makes this book a great investment!

This book is divided by section; Breads: yeast breads, quick breads and breakfast breads; Breakfast and Brunch: breads, meats, cereals, casseroles and other dishes; Pasta, Grains, Beans and Rice: pasta, grains, beans and rice; Desserts: cakes, bars and cookies, fruit desserts, puddings and custards, pies, miscellaneous; Soups: soups and soup components; Sauces and Salad Dressings: salad dressings, chutney and salsa, sauces for entrees or vegetables, dessert sauces and miscellaneous; Vegetables: potatoes and miscellaneous; Poultry: grilled chicken, stove-top chicken, and baked dishes; Fish and Seafood: fish and shellfish; Meats - Beef and Pork: beef, mixed meats, and pork & ham; Menus and finally, Appendices with valuable info like wheat flour equivalents and substitutes for wheat as a thickener.

My only major complaint (apart from that some of the recipies don't turn out half as well as they sound, but then again, that's to be expected on a gluten-free diet), is that unless you like Mexican / south-western food, about a quarter of these recipies are of no use to you. Before being diagnosed with celiac I used to get terrible indigestion (the author claims her only problem with wheat and gluten was a runny nose and stuffy sinuses). For anyone who is a celiac, and who has experienced the horrible side effects of simply eating food before a diagnosis is established, you probably want to AVOID foods that traditionally cause heartburn or gas or other symptoms similar to what I call a 'wheat-attack'. I'm sure plenty of people out there are able to handle Mexican / south-western food, but a huge number of celiacs are sensitive to all kinds of food, and kicking food up with peppers and spices and whatever else is great if your sinuses are blocked, but after having heartburn for months on end, you might not be too eager to start cooking up a big ol' pot of chilli!

Over all, it's still a good buy. I mean, even though I don't see many celiacs (espically soon after their diagnosis) cooking some of these things, it's a good book to have. You can make lots of things that are fairly "soft" on your tummy, and maybe after a little while (it's been almost 2 years since my diagnosis and I STILL won't touch a pot of chilli!) you can try some of these more spicy variations in the kitchen. If you're simply gluten-intolerant, or have sinus problems like the author, then this book is a great investment! If I weren't a celiac I'd definately give it 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful guide to cooking without wheat or gluten..........2000-05-27

This book is chock-full of great recipes! There are over 200 recipes for everything from breads to pizza to desserts to sauces. There is a whole section devoted to menus, to help you plan a meal around the foods in the book. There are several wonderful appendices, including one on wheat flour equivalents, hidden sources of wheat, baking with dairy substitutes, and mail order sources for some of the more obscure ingredients used.

My only quibble with this book is that it does use a fair amount of sugar (although brown, rather than white) in some recipes, which is not as healthy as it might be. But the author has another book which addresses this issue: Special Diet Solutions - Healthy cooking without wheat, gluten, dairy, eggs, yeast or refined sugar.

All in all this is a marvelous book for anyone who is dealing with a wheat or glueten food allergy or sensitivity. Don't hesitate!

The new edition of the ultimate antiques collector's guide, every year more highly prized

For twenty years this highly praised and consistent seller has been the only price guide to American antiques and objects made for the American market that illustrates every item listed. The 2000-2001 edition contains more than 5000 entirely new objects and auction prices--from furniture and lighting to ceramics and clocks to advertising and novelty items--each keyed to the year the piece was sold and the location of the auction sale. Such essential information, plus the comprehensive index and the enthusiasm and authority of the author, makes this the invaluable reference American antiques collectors look for every year.

4 out of 5 stars The best price guide series available........2002-10-27

Dorothy Hammond's series is of more use to serious antique collectors than other price guides because the items illustrated are identified as having been sold for the price given by auction or by dealer, the date of the sale, and the location of the sale. The information is timely and accurate. Items that I sold at auction in 2001 are illustrated here accurately. In other price guides, I've seen items that I can specifically identify as having been sold seven or eight years earlier listed with the old prices. In a rapidly changing market, that kind of misinformation can be costly.

5 out of 5 stars Dorothy Hammond books.......2002-01-14

My husband & I have been collecting antiques for over 30 years. This book is wonderful because EVERY ITEM DESCRIBED IS PICTURED.
There is no guessing if this is your antique by the written desription, there is a picture to be certain.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed in Michigan.......2001-03-16

I was extremely disappointed with this book. Most of the items are photographed in back and white and in large groups, which makes it nearly impossible to identify items using these photos as references. I wouldn't recommend it for identification purposes.

This book is a reprint of Christopher's "Houdini A Pictorial Life" published in 1976. Compared to the original, it's a rather poor reprint. The quality of the B&W photos are much degraded and one of the original book's two color pages is now B&W (the other is missing entirely). Still, the photos in this book - many showing Houdini in action - are terrific and very rare. The original book can be hard to find and tends to sell for $30 and up. But if you're going to hunt (and pay) then hunt down instead "Houdini His Legend and His Magic" by Doug Henning. This is the best of the four "coffee table" size Houdini books done in the late '70s. If you're looking for a definitive Houdini biography (more content than photos) I recommend "Houdini! The Career of Ehrich Weiss" by Ken Silverman.

3 out of 5 stars interesting republished photos of Houdini and his life.......1999-04-08

a work of republished and copied photos of Harry. Its nice to have them all together and even some photos that are not found elsewhere. The publisher and or author would have more praise if the photos were clearer and more refined and not so dark . Some looked as if they were photocopied out of someone elses photocopy book.... I would have liked to compare this edition with first printing to see if there was a difference.. many other books with some of the same photos show a definite clarity in reproduction.
