Customer Reviews:
three well- written and topically interesting short novels.......2002-04-15
I am very glad I found this paperback at the library and took a chance on it. The first novel, Fong and the Indians, concerns a hapless petty merchant in East Africa. It is delighfully politically incorrect while maintaining a sympathetic opinion of the underlying humanity of all the characters. The third, Jungle Lovers, could have been written by a heavy drinker attracted to African women, because, well, the protagonist has these characteristics. It is also well-paced and mixes politics, plot, and character quite well. I am currently reading the "second" placed novel and it is also delightfully juicy and descriptive. Overall, these books made me want to read more novels set in Africa, by Africans as well as visitors.
An enjoyable compiliation.......2000-10-06
This is actually a compilation of three previously-published novels, set in sub-Saharan Africa. To the best of my knowledge, all three are out of print, so the publisher has done the reader a service by re-printing all three in this volume.
Each of the novels in this volume has certain merits, and all three are worth your time. As a whole, they serve to encapsulate the experience of being a foreigner in Africa, in the 1970s. By foreigner I don't just mean Caucasian; the stories are told from diverse points of view. My personal favorite is the one about a group of women running a boarding school in upcountry Uganda, but anyone who either likes the writings of Paul Theroux or has an interest in Africa, would find that all three stories are worth his while.

A top pick for fantasy readers........2007-08-04
Mercedes Lackey and Rosemary Edghill edit BEDLAM'S EDGE, a top pick for fantasy readers. It's a volume of new urban fantasy containing works by the best modern writers of the genre, from Eric Flint to Diana Paxson, and presents a series of adventures, from a desperate search for a bottle in which a powerful and dangerous djinn is trapped to an alternate fantasy history in which the faeries become involved in America's Civil War. Powerful characterization and to-quality writing make this a distinguished collection which stands out from the crowd of fantasy anthologies on the market.
Excellent! .......2005-09-13
I'm new to this series, but I am familiar with most of the writers featured in Bedlams Edge.
I'll buy and read anything that Dave Freer writes from Pyramid Scheme on down to his grocery list, (that is if Mr. Freer wrote it). Mr. Freer's stories are a delightful half bubble off center; far enough off center for the story to be enjoyable and close enough on center for the story to be believable.
Mr. Freer is the first author that I'd buy sight unseen.
In Red Fiddler, Mr Freer leads the reader along effortlessly as the story unfolds as a seamless whole. A very enjoyable read!
Mr. Flint is another author I buy sight unseen.
Mr. Flint caught my attention from the moment I first picked up his "Philosophical Strangler." His inclusion in Red Fiddler was very welcome extra.
Barb and Michael Caffery's "Bright as Diamonds" delighted me very much. It was as delicately written as the necklace that the heroine wore in their story. I have added Barb and Michael Caffery to my list of buy sight unseen authors.
Ms. Lackey and Ms. Edghill are added to my "Must Buy List" also.
I haven't mentioned the rest of the authors out of time restraints. All the stories in Bedlams Edge are worth purchase on their own merits, the reader lucks out in that they're all in one place.
Kudos to Ms. Lackey and Ms. Edghill for making this book happen and letting other writers play in their universe.

A compilation of neat stories, all gems.......2005-08-28
Since I like Misty Lackey and Rosemary Edghill enough to buy them in hardcover, I'll focus on the other stories.
"Bright As Diamonds" by Barb and Michael Caffrey reminds me most of the Lackey/Edghill collaborations, as their style and story reflect that "universe" faithfully. I appreciated their use of the Brisingamen and elements of Scandinavian fantasy -- they incorporated lesser-known mythology into the Lackey/Edghill universe in a smooth manner.
"Bottle of Djinn" was also amusing, and a modern version of the djinn versus humans.
In "Red Fiddler", Dave Freer brings his updated Fear Dearg, the Irish "red man" transplanted to Africa, to us in a thoroughly enjoyable story. True to form, Dave finds some way to bring the forgotten tricksters of our past into a modern world, while keeping their low and vile humor wickedly certain.
"All That Jazz" by Jenn Saint-John..all I can say is, "That idiot, Norenlod."
"Six-Shooter" by Ellen Guon and "The Waters and the Wild" by Misty Lackey were both compelling looks at more disturbing topics. Suicide, in "Six-Shooter" is.."encouraged" by evil beings who then consume the souls of the hapless suicides. Some of the souls fight back for as long as they can. "Waters" begins with a man explaining how someone helped him through a difficult adolescence, and although a sniper's bullet takes him out of this life, he finds that person again.
All of the stories were written by seasoned professionals, even if some of the authors are not widely known to the discerning reader. The skill with which they write is clearly evident, and I look forward to future collaborations in this universe, and perhaps even solo endeavors by these authors (one can only hope!).
Sliding Down the Razor Blade of Life.......2005-08-16
Ever wondered what was just around the corner? Felt like you were being watched, but when you turned around, nobody was there? Maybe you were wrong. Maybe there is something there, behind the flats and props of ordinary reality.
Mercedes Lackey, Ellen Guon, and Rosemary Edghill created a look behind the scenes in their Bedlam's Bard series. What would happen if elves continued to exist in the present day? What would happen if they came to America with the colonists? And what would they be doing?
In Bedlam's Edge, they've opened their universe to other writers, including talented newcomers Barb and Michael Caffrey (who sadly, passed away suddenly and too young), who share their own takes on the world of Urban Elves.
Dave Freer and Eric Flint, Mercedes Lackey's co-authors in the Heirs of Alexandria series (if you haven't read the series, go immediately and buy all of them, including A Mankind Witch, the latest.), Roberta Gellis, Rosemary Edghill, India Edghill, and Mercedes Lackey herself all contributed to this excellent collection of short stories.
Do you have to have read all the other books in the series to enjoy this one? Heck, no! In fact, it stands alone better than most anthologies do.
This is a terrific collection. Every story is a jewel.

A Thorough Blast to Read.......2005-05-22
I'm getting why 2000 AD and Judge Dredd are so popular. The stories aren't spectacularly original. But they are well-plotted, well-characterized, and are always just a blast to read.
Case in point: "Judge Anderson: Anderson-Psi Division", which collects three story arcs from Judge Anderson's solo adventures. Judge Casandra Anderson is a denzien of a distant post-apocalyptic future, wherein the surviving population has been jammed into Mega cities. These cities are patrolled by judges, the best and the brightest the city has to offer. These judges are given the power to enforce the law, convict felons, and execute sentences, all on the spot. Some judges have various psionic abilites, which are useful to solving and preventing crime. Unlike Judge Dredd, Anderson is a character with a sense of humor, and certain warmth. That doesn't stop her from being a tough-as-nails badass when the situation calls for it.
In the first story, "Four Dark Judges", Anderson becomes increasingly concerned that Judge Death and his cronyies are attempting to return. Her efforts to prevent that make matters worse. In "The Sacrifice", Anderson attempts to save a boy from demonic possession, but must face a no-win situation. And in "Hour of the Wolf", Anderson keeps getting images of a giant wolf attacking Mega-City 1, as a conspiracy of revenge is set in motion with her as a primary target.
Despite the elaborate background of these stories, they're self-contained. If this is your first experience with the "Dreddverse", you won't be overwhelmed by continutiy or backstory. They're also actioned-packed hoots, with a solid ammount of satire and violence built in.
Unfortunately, since DC is no longer publishing 2000 AD material, I have no idea when a volume two might be published, or by who. Still, it's worth your while to have the first one.

Rabbi Oshry's eye-witness account of the Lithuanian religious community's courageous struggle to survive in the Kovno Ghetto. Even in famine, kashruth was kept. Even under the threat of death, Torah learning continued. Even as Nazis waied by the door, baby boys were circumcised. An astonishing account and unlike anything else that's been written about Lithuania! Included also is a short town-by-town history of Jewish Lithuania and a record of its destruction. Illustrated with 171 photographs and complete with index, glossary and maps. Translated from Yiddish by Y. Leiman.

A must read book on the Holocaust.......2000-08-29
This most serious book is very effective at sharing events that happened during the Holocaust - particularly in Kovno / Slobadka. It enables the readers to get a glimpse of the savagery of the Nazi butchers. Rabbi Oshry tells first hand accounts of their brutality and it clearly instills the fear of G-d in the reader.
This is an excellant first hand account........2000-03-10
This book consists of two parts. The first 60 % is about Rabbi Oshry's experainces in the Kovno ghetto. This part of the book can be broken up into four periods. The Nazi arrival and initial attrociates, 'normal ghetto life', the liquidation of the ghetto, and the period of time that they lived in a bunker. Their also are two chapters about the post-liberation period under Soviet rule. Though according to Jewish folklore, Lithuianian Jews are sterotypically 'cold interlectualls', this book is very passionately written. Because it was written shortly after the events occurred by an important figure of the Kovno ghetto, it is certainly an important book for those who want to learn about the Holocaust.
SAD AND POWERFUL.......1999-03-03
Originally written in 1951 in Yiddish, this is an eyewitness account of how the Nazis and their local supportors killed the Jews, rabbi by rabbi, village by village.
Book Description
Bake It to the Limit is sure to be the hot, new dessert cookbook. This full-color photographic cookbook includes rich and decadent desserts that anyone can make, following Dede Wilson's carefully prepared recipes. Not satisfied with recipes that just taste good, she offers spectacular, Bake It to the Limit variations that will really impress. Some of the variations are easy-sprinkling gold leaf flakes over a cake, sandwiching ice cream between two cookies and dunking it in chocolate ganache, or using cookie cutters to create fun shapes. Others are a little more elaborate, but worth the effort-marzipan or chocolate roses, crystallized flowers, flavored buttercream frostings, solid chocolate serving bowls, and piping fruit or chocolate sauces over desserts in decorative ways. Wilson explains all of the techniques in detail, and the gorgeous photographs show you the finished product.
A professional baker and wedding cake designer, Wilson includes all the basics you need to get started: tips on working with chocolate and other finicky ingredients, plating techniques, essential kitchen tools, and pantry staples for whipping up a dessert on short notice. With chapters on brownies and bars, breakfast treats and snacks, mousses and puddings, ice creams, cookies, pies and tarts, cakes and more, this is a book that dessert lovers will turn to again and again.

This is my second Dede Wilson book and I am really happy with it. Things look great and taste even better.
the cookie made me do it.......2004-03-08
I printed Dede Wilson's recipe for the Menage a Trois cookies off the net. I've made them twice to rave reviews. I found the recipe very easy to follow, and quick to make. My friends fell in love with these wonderful, beyond decadent cookies. This an adult cookie, they're sophisticated enough to stand on their own, no ice cream or other support food needed. I must admit I do not own her cookbook , but I just ordered it 10 minutes ago. I'm really looking forward to receiving it. I just can't wait! Hence "the cookie made me do it". Try, enjoy and relish them.
This book Saved the Holidays.......2003-12-16
I am not a baker or much of a cook and I needed cookie recipes for several functions. Thank Goodness for this book. The recipes were easy enough for me to follow and the yields were very generous. The different options for baking it to the limit encouraged me to try taking the recipe a step farther. With this book, I can bake!
Dede Wilson Cooks!.......2000-09-20
Dede Wilson's Wedding Book is a classic, and this follow upbook has many interesting ideas and sumptuous recipes. She clearly conveys techniques that make something intimidating very easy to do. I've seen her on television and enjoyed her desserts immensely. [...] Food photography can be [expensive], and would make the cost of a book as thorough and as comprehensive as this prohibitive. Dede Wilson gets a big thumbs up from this home baker!
Bake it to the Limit.......2000-06-20
This is another one of those books with some very yummy sounding recipes, but also a lot of recipes using some rather odd food combinations the average person/family member is just not going to appreciate. To be honest, I have not tried any of the recipes, but I have read the book from cover to cover and I must say most of the recipes appear quite complicated having several "stages" you must progress through to get to the end result. After each of the recipes there is a "Bake it to the Limit" version that is even more complicated than the original as well as more "gourmet" which I can tell you right now, the novice or average baker is NOT going to have the skill to pull off or want to put in the time (some of these recipes have an entire page or more of written instructions). A lot of the recipes also require "base" recipes that are given in a chapter at the rear of book like creme fraiche, clarified butter, tempered chocolate, mint sauce, etc. that are pulled together as you go, again emphasizing the fact that you can't just whip up the recipe in one sitting, you must incorporate these "base" recipes which means you will have to flip back and forth through the book as you go. My biggest disapointment aside from the complicated nature of the recipes is the severe lack of pictures. I personally like to see the end product of every recipe. I want to see what my creation is supposed to look like not to mention that half the time it is the picture that can sell you on whether you want to make it at all! There is also an entire chapter devoted to ice cream recipes and sorbets which is all well and fine but they are all made using an ice cream maker -I don't have an ice cream maker so this whole chapter is useless to me. Anyway, if you want to make an impressive dessert and have a lot of time on your hands and don't mind a challenge then this is a good investment for you!

Switchblades Of Italy: a Collector's Christmas List.......2004-07-28
The serious collector as well as the curious automatic knife buyer will find this author's work to be extensive on the subject of Italian Automatic Knives. With 128 pages, including high resolution photography of "tang stamps," this title covers topics ranging from the evolution of the automatic knife in Italian production to the ignoble standing this type of cutlery has been labeled with by the media over the years. Detailed information on specific manufacturers and the history of these companies give the reader specific information that is not easily found elsewhere, proving this book to be an invaluable source of information for the collector seeking to authenticate rare Italian Stilettos. A must for the knife collector or dealer.

Excellent Read for the Novice or Master Modeler.......2004-06-25
Schleicher has written an excellent book for anyone interested in any kind of miniature modeling. Whether your interest is model railroading, military dioramas, or dollhouses, you will enjoy reading and learning something new about your field.
My particular interest is making miniature Civil War and Revolutionary War dioramas. Needless to say, there was much in here for me to learn. I particularly enjoyed reading the sections about how to make dirt roads and making model trees.
I have tried one particular suggestion: using plush felt to simulate tall grass and weeds. The result was a good and inexpensive alternative to the other ways modelers can simulate grass and weeds.
I also appreciated the 25 tear reference cards you can use for different modeling techniques.
Read, enjoy, and learn something new about modeling!
How to do it scenery guide for the serious miniature modeler.......1999-03-26

Book Description
There's nothing like the joy of decorative painting--transforming an ordinary object into a one-of-a-kind work of art! It all starts with your first stroke. And there's no easier, more enjoyable way to learn that first stroke (and the second and the third ... ) than with this comprehensive visual guide.
Inside, you'll see every basic stroke--from the comma stroke to the S-stroke--broken down into several steps and illustrated in easy-to-follow worksheets. You'll learn proper brush techniques for single-loaded strokes , double-loaded strokes , tipped strokes, side-loaded strokes, and linework. Before you know it, you'll be using what you've learned to paint pretty flowers, beautiful borders, and even complete designs! These strokes are the "building blocks" of virtually every decorative painting style--so once you master them, there's no limit to the decorative magic you can create!
Customer Reviews:
Very good book.......2004-03-04
I never thought that I'll like another one stoke book after Donna Dewberry's books but this book is really good for beginners and professionals. The first 70 pages shows the basics of one stroke painting. Then there are lots of border examples which can be made easily by the beginners. After them, the real painting comes. 6 beautiful projects are shown step by step so you can understand and make the same projects easily. I recommend this book to everyone.
Too technical for my taste.......2003-10-03
You'll like this book if you are:
1. Left-brained and over-analytical
2. Like things written in a technical manner
3. Prefer simple things broken down in many steps.
If you like things written in a simple manner, don't buy this book.
I bought this book and ended up returning it. I found the instructions too technical and tedious. The instructions read more like "the anatomy of a brushstroke," where one brushstroke would be broken down in so many steps that you could get lost. "Angle your brush to the corner, in your minds's eye picture 2 o'clock, at this point put pressure...now curve, lift..." and we have 5 more steps to go. OK, I might be exaggerating but I'm trying to give you the gist of it. There are NO WORKSHEETS, except for 2 pages that look like a ROAD MAP which tell you where your brush should be positioned and where it should end up after you complete the stroke. You really should take a look for yourself to see how confusing this book is.
There are so many better, simplier, more comprehensive and enjoyable (let's not forget that) decorative painting books out there, that I suggest you bypass this one. I gave it 2 stars because someone who is more technically-oriented might find it useful.
Great Book!.......2000-05-17
This is a wonderful book describing basic brushstrokes for Decorative Painter's. There is a good explanation of brushes and their uses. The techniques are well explained and easy to follow. After practicing for a relatively small period of time, I was painting things that I felt comfortable showing other people. And those people knew what I had painted! Actually, they were quite impressed! The only reason I did not give this book 5 stars is that I have seen some Decorative Painting books that are slightly more thorough although they tend to be more expensive. I would recommend this book to a beginning Decorative Painter.

Book Description
Parmigianino (1503–1540) was one of the Italian Renaissance’s great geniuses. Characterized by a distinctive and elegant style and exquisite draftsmanship, he was also one of the first painter-etchers, engraving his own work and disseminating it throughout Italy and northern Europe. This beautiful volume, the definitive work on Parmigianino, focuses on both the public world of his paintings and the private realm of his drawings. It encompasses the latest research and takes full advantage of recent cleanings and restorations of the artist’s major works.
David Ekserdjian, a leading authority on Parmigianino, draws on more than twenty years of research on the artist to consider his entire oeuvre—paintings, drawings, and prints. The book contains several unpublished drawings and a new painting, and it brings together for the first time the new paintings and drawings that have been discovered and published in recent years, some by Ekserdjian himself. The author discusses these works in the context of the artist’s career and development, demonstrating the extraordinary extent of Parmigianino’s creative powers.

Parmigianino
ASIN: 0300103573 |
Book Description
The sheer beauty of the work of sixteenth-century artist Parmigianino (1503-40) makes it easy to imagine that he discovered his style without any effort. But nothing so elegant as his drawings and paintings could have been achieved effortlessly. A close study of the artist's work, particularly his drawings, reveals the sources of his style and the creative struggles he endured. This lavishly illustrated book offers a comprehensive reassessment of Parmigianino's work as a draftsman, discussing in detail more than eighty of the artist's works on paper selected from collections around the world. Among Renaissance artists, Parmigianino was perhaps more conscious than any of the potential of the graphic arts to convey, and indeed broadcast, complex ideas. He explored this potential by means of his numerous drawings and through the etchings he produced on his own as well as through the engravings and chiaroscuro that were made after his designs. In these media, the artist's influence traveled farther and wider than it could have through his paintings alone.

unless you have a particular interest in the writing of Cecil Gould. Buy the new book on Parmigianino's Paintings by Mary Vaccaro instead (the compliment to her book on the drawings). The reproductions in that book are ten times better than in this one - all colour, superb full page details, full range of paintings (some now cleaned and restored). And it's cheaper. No contest.

When I first heard of this volume I was quite excited. I was already familiar with the superb series of monographs on other Renaissance painters that Abbeville Press has been putting out over the last several years. However, this one disappointed me. The large size and high price lead one to believe that this is a comprehensive and full review of the great Mannerist painter's work. In point of fact, it's rather skimpy. Many of the major works are missing, in particular the magnificent Conversion of St. Paul. How this significant picture (and it is repeatedly mentioned in the text) was left out is beyond me. It's like reviewing Leonardo's work and leaving out the Last Supper. To make matters worse, at least forty (yes, forty) of the paintings are shown in black and white only. Many of Parmigianino's numerous and wonderful drawings have survived, yet only a few of them appear here (in mostly mediocre and small reproductions). The text is scholarly and well written but offers little new insight into the artist and his work, and it's all too obviously printed in rather big, widely spaced type to make it appear more extensive than it really is. As I mentioned, Abbeville has previously issued superb, spectacular books on artists such as Giotto, Masaccio, Fra Angelico, Carpaccio, Bellini and several others. These are among the very best (perhaps they are THE very best) books on these painters. I don't know what went wrong here. Perhaps the premature death of the author had something to do with it. Even so, the editors should have made sure that the project was finished in a more satisfactory manner. This is, after all, a very expensive art book about an original, important and influential High Renaissance artist on whom very, very little material is available at present. Perhaps one day a revised edition will be published. Even better, maybe someone else will assemble a more comprehensive and competently produced volume on this great painter. In the meantime, this is what we have. I would recommend this volume to libraries but not to most individual art lovers.

A pretty good book.......2001-04-30
I read this book hoping to learn more about Parmigianino's life than I already knew (from Vasari's Lives of the Artist). Unfortunately, this book doesn't offer much more. This book addresses the chronology of his paintings (within a summary of his life), and relates his paintings to each other, and to other works of art. It includes most of his paintings (I don't think it includes all of them), but some of them are not in color.

A treat for 60s pop music fans.......2006-03-21
This is a really an unusual but wonderful book. It is a combination of autobiography, inspirational book, photography and pop music history. Dionne has done an outstanding job once again and helped us understand the woman behind the voice that popularized the music of Bacharach and David. The CD is very special too. This book is a treat for 60s pop music fans and a must buy for fans of Dionne Warwick!
Really nice Book.......2004-11-24
Dionne didn't sit down to spill any dirt here...this is just a very nice coffe table style book full or TONS of pictures from every era of her long journey in show Business. Books also comes with a Bonus Cd and all all and Dionne fan will NOT be sorry with this under their Christmas tree.
