A comics master's apex.......2006-11-06

Will Eisner is righfully considered to be the most innovative draftsman and storyteller in the history of comics so far (just over 100 years and counting...). This particular volume collects his 'Spirit' stories at the top of their form. Stories in which the Spirit himself often took a backseat to various colorful character inhabiting Central City. This allowed for a greater variety of genres to be played with by the writers (which included a young Jules Pfieffer), getting away from the Spirit's usual crime noir and delving into slice of life stories, science fiction, and humor. I'm a cartoonist myself (see Commodore Dinosaur on the web)and teach a college course on comics and graphic novel illustration and Eisner's work is required reading, but that aside, these stories are just entertaining as hell.

A great and original science-fiction book........1999-03-26

Ian Mac Donald has a refreshing style that should appeal to all hardcore sci-fi readers tired of big spaceships and huge disasters. Here, the core of the plot is the human destiny, with its share of luck and coincidence ; if everything seems at first a bit disentangled, it all ties up in the end in a glorious finish wich is one of the best ever written. This book is like foreign food : try, and you'll find it excellent.

McDonald's best work to date........1998-07-02

Ian McDonald's Desolation Road is undeniably his best book, a rich and vibrant tale of village life on a terraformed Mars. Reminiscent (intentionally) of the magic realist novels of Marquez and Llosa it transcends the science fiction genre without denigrating it, revelling in both worlds to the credit of each. This is one of those books that critics should hold up as an example of great writing in sf, especially because it won't disappoint even the most hardened veteran reader--literally, a book for everyone.

Desolation Road is a scifi romp through what might be when we start migrating to distant planets. The combination of entertaining and well thought through characters, peculiar perspective manipulation, and engrossing dialogue makes this one of my personal favorites. Air, Land, and Sea all take secondary roles to time and space. A distinctly new style and approach while addressing the mundane and oft peculiar activities of current life in the post industrial age make this book breath with the life of all times. One of the best monologue books I've read.......2005-10-19

I saw my friend with this book in my acting class, and I asked if I could take a look through it. I read through about five different monologues, and when the class was over, I drove to the local theater bookstore and bought a copy for myself. I could have bought it over Amazon for a discount, but I just couldn't wait.

The book contains 55 monologues. Most are standard 1-2 pages long, but some are relatively long. One in particular is 8 pages long, and is more of a short one-man scene than a monologue. In fact, only about half of the monologues are excerpts from plays. The rest are written to be a monologue (or a short one-man scene) from the scratch.

I've read about two dozens now, and almost all of them filled me with inspirations. Very well written with lots of actable beats. While some are too long for most audition situations, there are still plenty of short monologues that will serve you very well. And as study/practice material (whether in-class or on your own), this book is a pure goldmine.

This book belongs in every aspiring actors' bookshelf.

p.s. There is a women's version of this book too. When I was at the bookstore, I read two monologues at random, and even though I was cold-reading a woman's part, I immediately got a sense of the character in the writing. I have zero doubt that aspiring actresses will find that book of immense value.

This cookbook has traditional southern recipes mixed with beautiful photography of some historic Charleston homes. There is also a bit of history included with each menu. I highly reccomend this book.
