This is a well written, interesting novel revolving around Gaarder's most intriguing narrator. I enjoyed the vignettes throughout the book as well as the link to the greater story, but I felt as if I was watching a train wreck toward the end. I wonder why such an intelligent narrator was unable to deduce the obvious, which was, really, my only frustration with this novel. I did appreciate the novel's ancient Greek tragic turn, as Gaarder's other novels deal with saddness and loss as well, but not as darkly as this one. I truly felt angst as a reader, and thus, even if I didn't LIKE the outcome, I could certainly appreciate it in the contex of the story.

This is my favorite book by Jostein Gaarder. I think what has made it a better story than others lies in its intensity: love, pain, treason, mystery are interwoven very tightly. Gaarder has succeeded in creating a very intellectual, yet eccentric narrator with depth. Among other things, the book discusses the core of creativity and the role of the creator. Frankly, I do not know what to make of the ending. Much like Gaarder's other works, the book is laden with beautiful moments and ingenious ideas.

Dark and Beautiful!!.......2005-08-20

The Ringmaster's Daughter is told from the perspective of a young boy, Petter. Petter's overactive imagination is amazing, but sometimes gets him in trouble too. Petter is able to weave these fantastic stories, that are beautiful and sad. But he's a little crazy, too. He sees a little man that's not really there. This little man is always bossing him around. Petter can't distinguish between dreams and memories.

I really enjoyed this book. I couldn't put it down. I thought it was really unique that we got to read the stories that Petter came up with. Sometimes Petter tells stories in a way that reveals something about him or something important that he can't say flat out. Every story that Petter tells is amazing and tragic and ends with a twist, kinda like this book. Gaarder uses his "story within a story" method yet again and it works.

This is by far the best book I've read in a long time.

This book, originally published by NASA as SP-250, contains many stunning photographs of the Earth. Most of the pictures taken of the Earth were by the crews of Apollo 7 and Apollo 9 (the only manned Earth orbiting Apollo missions); however, there are a good number of supporting photographs from other sources, such as weather satellites.

The book is divided into five main sections: Air, Water, Land, Man's Effect and North America. There is also an introductory section and section on future missions to the planets. As the owner of many books of Earth photographed from space, it is this book that set the standard for all books afterwards. While many books published since "This Island Earth," have higher quality photographs or larger page sizes, the general layout has remained the same. That is, sections on Earth's land, air, water and mankind all photographed from space.

You can find this book listed quite frequently in Amazon's zShops and it is well worth the price.

This Island Earth is a book of heroes. The first half of the film closely follows the novel but then diverges from the intellectual challenges faced by Dr. Cal Meachem to more cinematic fare. Reading the novel now, one cannot help but marvel at how Jones' views everything from labor disputes to the predictability of computers influenced later movies and television, making This Island Earth, the novel, even more influential than-one would guess from ThisIsland Earth the movie.

This is a true Science Fiction classic. I first read it when I was in Middle School, and it made quite an impression on me as a fantastic story with a wild premise, well-told. Picking it up thirty-five years later, the novel has lost none of its punch or impact. This is a true science fiction classic.

The premise of the novel is simple enough: Earth is being visited by warring factions of a monstrously large inter-galactic conflict. Each side views Earth as an obscure planet of limited importance, much as the US Navy might have viewed certain obscure islands in the Pacific during the Second World War. The protagonists become caught up in this conflict in a very interesting way. More would be telling, but suffice to say, this is a really interesting story, and its premise has not been done better (to my knowledge) in any science fiction novels that have come later.

This one is highly recommended to anyone who enjoys good science fiction.

Pulp Classic: This Island Earth by Ramond F. Jones.......2004-01-30

What moral obligation does a scientist have? If his or her efforts are used by the military to inflict death and destruction on an enemy to spare others from dying, is he or she morally wrong? This question, among others, is a central theme of this re-released work that inspired the classic 1950's movie.

Joe Wilson is the purchasing agent for Ryberg Instrument. One day, instead of getting what he ordered, he gets a shipment of rather strange looking parts. He turns them over to Cal Meacham to play with while he tries to get Cal's order straightened out. Cal starts playing with the parts back in the lab and discovers they are simply amazing and like nothing he has ever seen of or heard of before.

Joe sends in a replacement order and instead gets more of the same parts, plus an intriguing catalog. He turns everything he gets over to Cal and Cal is also fascinated by the catalog. It seems to suggest that a device can be built from the parts listed in the catalogue. A device that no one seems to have heard of before.

Cal builds the device and it allows him to communicate at vast distances. The ability to create the device from nothing more than a parts list was a test and he has passed. He accepts the resultant job offer and becomes involved in a vast conspiracy of mind-boggling proportions. The fate of the world may hang in the balance as well as Cal's own moral code.

Regardless of whether or not you have seen the movie, this is a great book. The writing is crisp and sharp with strong characters and a fantastic premise. Not too many people write Science Fiction like this anymore and this story well withstands the test of time.

Pulp Science Fiction.......2003-08-12

This is a fun book to read if you are into 50's science fiction. The movie is equally entertaining and if you have seen it yet it's worth a try. Order a pizza, pop some popcorn, and curl up with your woman and enjoy a fun movie.

On the bookshelves today, you will find Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, and, if you are lucky, E.E. Doc. Smith. They are all that remain of the myriad of pulp science fiction writers of years ago. The early part of the twentieth century was filled with a number of very good pulp writers in all genres but this style of writing has nearly disappeared. Some of their stories have disappeared for good reasons but many others were lost in the passage of time. This Island Earth is one of those lost. Reading it, you can tell that it was written before political correctness. There is a naivete about the writing with a harshness of someone who has experienced the atrocities of a world at war. It follows the single idea based science fiction writing of the era. The idea is intriguing, 'what would happen if you found a manual of a super high tech machine that seems to be based on scientific ideas no one has seen or heard before.'

This Island Earth starts with an engineer, Cal Meacham, receiving an order of parts that look impossible. When Cal asks for a catalogue from the company, he receives a listing of parts that shouldn't exist and instructions on making a device called an interocitor. Forgetting the adage about curiousity killing the cat, Cal orders the parts to make the interocitor. Single mindedly Cal forges ahead more interested in the engineering and science than what it could mean. Cal doesn't see the danger to himself and the earth until it is too late to stop.

This Island Earth isn't the best written novel. A common practice in the pulp magazine period is to string a series of short stories together into a novel. This Island Earth is a composite of three short stories written over a period of years and it is possible to tell the change of focus between the novelletes. Although pulp writing sometimes lacks a finished polish, it can be great storytelling. Science fiction readers will appreciate glimpsing the roots of today's genre. Historical readers will enjoy the insight into the social mind set of the post World War II and early Cold War period. But anyone who likes good storytelling will enjoy This Island Earth.

This book is great if anyone saw the movie and wants to read the book you won't be dissapointed. Although it gets diffrent halfway you can still see parts that the movie did put in. If you are a fan of the movie you can tell that in the book they realy picked out the right actors for the movie. It is an interesting way how Russel Johnsons' character (the professer) blew up in the book than he did in the movie. The interociters also can pick up brain waves. There are typos however that make it anoying. But just the fact that Raymond F. Jones' fun story is available you can surpass that. Prepare to find out what is going on out there over are heads above THIS ISLAND EARTH!

This is a great little book........1999-03-30

I have had this book for several years.It is the most helpful that I have seen on fish and shellfish.It does not have a lot of recipes but the information on the different varieties of seafood and fish makes up for the number of recipes. As a Fisherperson, this book has been great to identify the different methods of cleaning and cooking my catch, whatever it is.I am happy to give it"Five Stars".

Fun and Beautiful.......2007-07-30

The instructions in this book are well written and clear, but what makes "Pine Needle Basketry" worth owning are the beautiful color photographs that are liberally sprinkled throughout the book. The book starts with a discussion of the required tools and materials and pretty quickly jumps into directions on how to make a simple pine needle basket. From there the author describes additional techniques such as: the different stitches used to bind the coils, adding beads and shells for embellishment, and using a gourd for the base of a basket. Next comes the "Projects" section where you are shown a photograph of a finished basket. Beneath each photo is a list of the techniques used and the pages where the technique descriptions can be found. The projects range from the first simple and functional basket to purely decorative pieces. Next comes the truly inspiring "Gallery" section. This is pure "eye candy". There is example after example of how other artists have transformed this simple craft into an art form. If you love baskets, then this is a great book to put on your shelf.

The Best Book on the subject!!.......2007-07-08

I love this book! I made pine needle baskets years (20) ago and just started back with this hobby again. I just wish Judy Mallow would write another book with more of her basket inspirations in it. It is the best book on the subject! Thanks to you Judy!!

Just Right.......2007-05-15

I've been researching the various literature available for creating a pine needle basket. Most lack something...but this book has it all. It clearly shows you the process, the tools that help make the baskets, and some beautiful color photos of finished products. Judy Mallow comes from a family of basket weavers, and she intutively creates the perfect form. Anyone looking for a great started book, or ideas for future creations would enjoy this book.

Trying to learn to do pine needle baskets, with very little knowledgeable help available, this book has proved invaluable! The instruction is very good, and the color photos are fabulous for being able to see detail. It covers areas (such as dying the needles) that the few other books out there, don't even mention. I've started a small group of women to learn this old craft and my copy of this book is the most popular amoung them.

Pine Needle Basketry:From Forest Floor to Finished Project.......2007-01-23

I have thoroughly enjoyed this book. Judy's instructions and illustrations are very simple to follow. I am teaching a basket class and am recommending all the students purchase her book, since I have learned most of my techniques from her instructions.
