Exploring the inner lives and conflicts of three main characters, each of whom is a member of the band during the Titanic's maiden voyage, Fosnes Hansen recreates the unstable and dismal world each man inhabits at the dawn of World War I. Jason Coward is bandmaster, Leo Lewenhaupt, known as Spot Hauptmann, is the pianist, and young David Bleierstein is a violinist. Together with two lesser developed characters, Alex from St. Petersburg, and Petronius from Rome, they raise the big questions of how we become who we are, how much freedom we have to make choices in our lives, and to what extent we can control our destinies.
Each of these characters is in some way a captain without a ship. As Fosnes Hansen brings them alive through the poignant and often harrowing tales of their youth, including the death of their dreams and the sorrows which have led them to the Titanic, we see them as ordinary people whose lives might have been completely different if just one or two circumstances had changed. Lonely and self-destructive, all have found love to be illusory and a stable and loving family life to be impossible. In the consummate irony, the Titanic may offer hope, for "A ship is a star...a star of dreams."
A writer of great intensity, Fosnes Hansen's portrayals of his characters are simultaneously gripping and sympathetic, his stories and anecdotes realistic and moving. Not given to flights of lyricism, the author creates his images through his selection of perfect details and by providing access to the vibrant inner lives of the characters. Revealing the Titanic as a microcosm of life in 1914, the author also offers many symbolic scenes--rat fights, the execution of beloved pets, puppet shows, for example--which broaden the reader's perspective on the characters and their times. Though the ending fizzles with the sinking of the ship, the novel is startling, not only in its own right, but because it so clearly foreshadows the author's later novel, Tales of Protection, a novel which is more fully developed thematically and which soars! I really like the musicians which make up this imagined band. Two of the characters are especially interesting, Jason and David. Each musician is from a different country and each is fleeing something which in some cases forbids any hope of return. So these are homeless souls united in their common wish to escape something in the past. We get to meet them as a group and individually. As a group they communicate with each other in a very interesting though some might say dysfunctional way. But they are musicians after all and musicians are not prone to using too many words. This suits most of these characters just fine. And even if they don't have the most engaging of conversations you do get a sense of them as a group who do care for and look out for each other. We also get to meet them individually and this is the best part of the novel. Each character's story is told in turns and the writing is strongest with Jason's story. Though David's story is a close second. The others stories are a little less interesting. The Norwegian author who wrote this is young or was when he wrote it and that may explain why the younger characters here seem the most completely drawn. The fact that they play on a cruise ship called the Titanic I'm sure didn't hurt sales for this book but though the Titanic history is well researched it is not really a book about that ship. This is a book about people's lives in a time when Europe was undergoing big changes and about to undergo an even bigger one. It is never mentioned but one can sense the great war just over the horizon. But before that tragedy can occur this one does. I think the book would have been even better had they not been on board that famous ship but some other and lived to arrive in New York and there perhaps played an interesting blend of music that fused the influence of their nationalities into a new kind of immigrant sound curing them all of the sorrowful past in the land of plenty(ok, I'm an American). As it is this book seems to introduce you to interesting characters then before we can see them really relate with each other and begin to overcome some of the things they were running from that damn iceberg does them in. This was my mid summer book recommended to me by a Norwegian relative so it has a special appeal for me. Thanks Norwegian relative.

Psalm at Journey's End, on a superficial level, is the tale of the Titanic on its tragic voyage, told through the eyes of its band that, as myth has it, went on playing right to the end amidst panic and chaos. However, what Erik Fosnes Hansen has produced here - at the impressive age of twenty-five - is a series of interweaving novellas each about the individual band member's back-stories, within the Titanic story. These are not true biographical accounts of the actual band on board the Titanic - an important note to all Titanic stalwarts. They are fictional. They are sumptuous, elegant narratives of love, growing up, friendship, loss and artistic creation. Each is a compelling aspect of the overall theme of tragedy. Hansen has an expressive style, at once simple, exact and effectual. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it highly.
Disappointing.......2000-11-07
From the cover and the blurb on the back, this is supposed to be a historical novel. Technically, this is true: it's a story of Gildged-Age era musicians serving on an Atlantic steamship. The ship in question just happens to be the RMS Titanic. It could have just as easily been the Empress of Ireland, or a totally fictional liner, and there would've been little to no change in the story. The musicians are the author's own creations, used in place of the actual men who served on the ship. It struck me as in poor taste, like writing a historical novel about the first men on the moon and replacing Buzz Aldrin and crew with "more interesting" characters.
For a *much* better novel set on the Titanic, using the historical figures, try Max Collins' The Titanic Murders.

This was a pretty good book! I especially like the story of the young Russian man (it's been months since I read it...I forget his name). While not really a Titanic book it is an accurate account of the times and these men share their melancholy lives with us.

This book was a pointless 7th book to an otherwise excellent 6 book series. There are some times when giving an audience what they want is a bad idea, and giving his readers more of his Phaze and Proton characters was a bad idea for Piers Anthony. In general, the rest of the books make a good read with somewhat original storylines and some interesting twists and turns. This book is so awful, I'm ashamed to even admit I read it. Take my advice and leave off with book six, it makes a good end to a decent Anthony series.
Should have been FAZED OUT! after book 3.......2003-01-07
This and the three that precede it are some of the worst books I have ever read. I am absolutely disgusted with myself for having read them. My only consolation is that I checked them out at the library and I did not buy them. I wouldn't give 2 cents for these unless I was desperate for kindling. I kept hoping they would improve, as the first three were entertaining.
... I won't even go into the completely implausible climax. I couldn't even believe it by suspending reality.

As this series winds up, veteran Sci-Fi/Fantasy writer Piers Anthony leaves his readers on the edge of a new dilemma, with so many possibilities. However, we are only left to wonder about the next few milennia on Phaze, and what is to happen on the magic side of the universe. What new challenges, and new threats, must these characters endure? For me, this book leaves more questions, and less answers, but allows the reader his own story line to follow in his own mind. Thank you, Mr. Anthony, for one last wild ride on the dual world of Proton/Phaze!
The fourth unneccisary book in an interesting trilogy of 7........1999-04-11
I'm sorry Piers for saying this but I advise any who consider reading the Adept series to ignore the last four books and keep it as a trilogy. The first three (Split Infinity, The Blue Adept, and Juxtaposition) are a wild ride through a very interesting world(or should I say two worlds?) which I recomend reading but the story, I feel was finnished with those. The last four(Out of Phaze, The Robot Adept, Unicorn Point, and Phaze Doubt), though with some interesting aspects, for the most part add needless complication to the story and are a testament to Mr. Anthony's greatest flaw, the ability to quit while he's ahead. These books only drag a good idea into the ground.

This is a wonderful book!!!! I think it is one of Anthony's best. Although, I do think he should write another book for this series. You should definately read this book, AND try Anthony's other books. He is a great author and ALL of his books are great too.

This title is actually the first book in "The Last Chancers" trilogy. This novel was released in January 2001. The Thirteenth Legion is made up by convict soldiers. They are led and controlled by Colonel Schaeffer. There are times I believed the colonel went out of his way to make the men despise him; especially Lieutenant Kage. In this episode, the men must battle a merciless eldar, orks, and other Chaos minions. If they lose, they die. If they win, they go on to the next suicide mission. The men in the legion are all traitors. This is their last chance to redeem themselves in the eyes of the Emperor. They seldom work together as a real team though. Each man looks out only for himself. And if they ever got the chance, they would kill Colonel Schaeffer in an instant.
***** Author Gav Thorpe did an excellent job in making believable characters, even if they are more than just a bit on the darker side. Each of these titles are good reads; however, if you want all three titles of the trilogy, as well as two short stories that help tie them together, consider purchasing ISBN: 1844163008. If you want to keep it all separate, then purchasing the stand alone novels is the way to go. *****

The hook for Warhammer 40,000, "In the grim darkness of the far-future there is only war" says it all. It's the 41st millennia and mankind is besieged on its many galactic fronts by different alien enemies, demons from the nether-region-like Warp, and threatened from within by civil war. As harsh as the Imperiam is, it's the last hope for the survival of the human race.
Thorpe takes the "Dirty Dozen" plot and pumps it chuck-full of super steroids and drops it in this WH40K universe, to create the penal legion, lovingly nick-named the Last Chancers. Lt. Kage and his fellow convicted criminals may have been better-off to serve out their life sentences in various prisons then to have been given a chance for redemption by the heartless Colonel Schaeffer. The pardons they've been promised for their military-service is always one more unknown and miserable battle-field away. Will they all only achieve absolution for their sins post-humanously or are any of them hard enough to survive to the Colonel's ultimate plan?

Bloody carnage? Hopeless battles against impossible odds? Violent psychopaths let loose on the battlefield? Yes, this book has all these things, and manages to weave it all into a pretty fun plot with interesting characters! Our protagonist is Kage, the psychopathic member of the 13th penal legion, a unit led by the mysterious Colonol on an endless succession of suicide missions. Quite the departure from Dan Abnett's more conventional infantry stories, this book is all about the anti-hero.

At first it was hard to understand mainly because its from a Imperial Guard Penial Leigon. But i then found my self hooked into the book. Battles and Life and Death situations kept me reading and reading. Looking forward to reading Kill Team. This book is a must especailly because of Lorii!! Once you begin reading 'bout her you will never stop reading!

I really wish there was a sequal to this...
Anyway, this is a great book about a Penal Legion called the Last Chancers. While reading this book I was thinking about giving it 4 stars since the battles didn't seem to have a purpose, but at the end it all comes together and makes sense. It is nice reading a book that doesn't have a good law-abiding hero for the main character, and this guy knocks out people's teeth, isn't afraid of killing people, and as I said, is in a Penal Legion.
My favorite character has to be the Tech-priest, though. Gav does a great job describing the member of the Adeptus Mechanicus, and I am going to "borrow" the description for a Tech-Priest in the Inquisitor game.

Not a Bad Grammar Depite Appearances.......2003-02-02
Right now there is a dearth of good Aramaic grammars on the market. Excepting Syriac, which can claim Wheeler M. Thackston's "Introduction to Syriac" the Jewish, Old, and Imperial dialects of Aramaic are accessed through grammars which, though in most cases posessing some merit, universally lack many of the qualities of a good grammar or textbook. This little grammar is no exception.
Though the compact size is convenient, the text of this grammar is downright ugly, with vocalizations written in by hand and the English text written on an ancient typewriter. The whole of the text is horribly compact, making it easy to overlook sections when searching for answers. The situation would be intolerable were it not for the fact that the book is organized by numbered paragraph markers. Explanations are painfully brief and assume a good bit of knowledge of Semitic languages (if not knowledge of another dialect of Aramaic) and philological training.
I would have considered this grammar a total loss except that the little bugger does actually have a huge amount of information in it. Being trained as I am at the business of learning dead Semitic languages, I am able to get around with the book and I have rarely been disappointed in my search for an answer to any particular question. The book is careful to show distinctions between Targumic Aramaic and Midrashic Aramaic, both subdialects that come under the umbrella of Palestinian Aramaic. It also frequently references Biblical Aramaic.
Finally, I should note that this book is strictly a reference grammar. It is organized by grammatical structure, and pays no mind to organization in lessons that introduce a student to the language through gradual introduction of concepts based on frequency or ease of learning. There are of course no excercises or glossaries.
Not for the novice, but an Aramaist or Hebraist who wants to dig into the Targums could profit much from this work.

This sharp, brief little grammar is in English with Hebrew-letter paradigms, is about all one needs for a deep first glance at this language, important for NT and Talmudic studies. This book has some fabulous ideas for facial scrubs and massage oil BUT reader be warned of the BANANA-HONEY conditioner! I tried this and the gooey bananas would NOT come out of my hair. It took 4 shampoos and a LOT of brushing. Not a fun morning.

I had fun reading through the recipes in this book evening if I do not have enough time to make them.
I recommend getting Natural Beauty for all Seasons by Cox if you enjoy simple pleasures like house work and gardening. But get Healthy Beauty using nature's secrets to look great and feel terrific by Hadady if you want advice on top quality natural cruelty-free products you can buy.
I wish there was a craft book with SIMPLE ingredients........2002-09-03
I decided to check this book out at a bookstore first, because I have gotten so many craft books that sound really great, but the materials and ingredients needed are very exotic or expensive. This book is no exception. Although the recipes and ideas are simple and easy, the essential oils needed (which are NOT cheap, mind you.) and the other array of items (that no one keeps in their house) would cost a fortune.
Her other book, "Natural Beauty at Home", is a MUCH better book, with the same easy and simple instructions, and realistic materials. Ideas like oatmeal masks, potpurri, and soap that are not hard to do, and not pricey. I highly recommend this one over "Natural Beauty for All Seasons".

Misleading.......2002-05-11
I didn't care for this book. I have several (home-made toiletries) books and I was dissapointed in this one. There should have been more recipes that incorporate the use of 'raw' natural materials OTHER than food. Food is extremely perishable. There ARE natural preservatives available on the market (Vit E, Grapefruit Seed Extract, Germaben II) that could have been utilized to come up with many good recipes. I also didn't like the fact that castor and mineral oils were used in some of the recipes, as these will clog up pores tremendously. In the Gift-Giving section, her ideas were good, though I would have liked to have seen some actual recipes and step-by-step instructions on the creations of these ideas. All in all, I give this book a 2-star rating. There ARE a few recipes in here that I will use, but hardly worth the price of that I payed. I could have had a better response via the search engines on the internet and saved the money.

I really enjoy the section on non food gifts like bath salts and such. Its really great to do something different than just cookies in a jar.

Those were the days..........2000-06-23
There is a story told, of a poor Italian man who lived in a small house with dirt floors. His only true possession was a painting that has been handed down through his family. He hung it over his fireplace. Well, rumors spread and a investigating Art Historian found that the painting was a lost Bottichelli , valued at several million dollars. After the discovery was made public, the man was forced to sell the painting as he could not afford security or insurance for it. This painting that was once appreciated for its beauty was now appreciated for its large price tag.
The point of this, and there is one, is that comics were once valueless pieces of old paper. People loved them anyways, and loved them enough to write this little book. "All in Color for a Dime" has a secret that modern comic collectors may have lost. It exudes joy for the four-color wonders know as comics. There is so much excitement in recounting the lost but not forgotten Captain Marvel, or even gaining new found respect for Popeye. All those little treasures are recounted in personal stories. Comics for the love of it, and not for the price tag. Reading Golden Age comics for the stories, what a great concept!
However, as a modern comics collector, I seem unable to ignore price tags entirely. I must admit I chucked when one of the writers was astounded to learn that a mint Action Comics #1 could be sold for up to $300.00. Those were the days.

I read this book four times when I was in junior high and high school, and I'm so glad to see it in print again. Great history, great pictures, and must have for comic book fans everywhere.
A great look at the Golden Age of Comics........1998-08-24
This book by Lupoff and Thompson is a pioneering work. Books on comics used to focus on daily strips and almost always glossed over comic books entirely. This was the first to give us the background of the artists, writers, and the charecters themselves. Well worth the money.

A perfect dollshouse book.......2002-02-28
I need more than 5 stars to adequately describe just how good this book is. If you are even remotely considering building and/or decorating a Georgian or Regency dollshouse, you must purchase this book. It fills many gaps left by other books of its kind - where else would you learn how to build an authentic fire crane and spitjack for the kitchen, a service crane and lamp snuffer for the front fence, and downpipes progressively dated? His attention to period accuracy is unsurpassed, covering the development of items such as the kitchen range and toilet through the age and a host of other important features. Brian Long has saved me weeks of research, thoroughly exploring every room and household function and the associated equipage, which is a particular boon for builders of this kind of house who live outside of England. Although he gives many useful suggestions for doing your own research, all but the most particular of dollshouse perfectionists will not need any other source. Plans for several houses are included, (including the one on the cover)although many builders would also need some prior experience and a good book devoted to the topic. I wish a book like this existed for every period. Brian, if you're reading, please start planning a library of these. Begin with the Tudor period and just keep going!

John Neil Munro's biography of the late great Alex Harvey is worth a read.
By the author's own admission it is not a wholly definitive study of the life and work of Harvey and relies heavily on previously published material and interviews with those who knew Harvey, some of whom struggled understandably to recall details from so long ago.
However, Munro does paint a vivid and sympathetic picture of one of Scotland's most prolific and charismatic musical and stage talents and his book will go down well with avid SAHB fans.
It chronicles Harvey's life from its humble beginnings in a tough impoverished district of south Glasgow in the 1930s to his home of nearly twenty years in London until his untimely and tragic death on 4 February 1982 - one day short of his 47th birthday.
There is little in the book that details his formative years in Glasgow and any such information is derived mainly from media interviews given by Harvey himself. Sometimes prone to exaggerated story telling, Harvey even insisted implausibly that one of his previous jobs was as a lion tamer!
With only a few paragraphs covering his schooling and early employment, we nevertheless get a flavour of his upbringing and early background and at least are made aware of his socialist and pacifist roots.
However, the book comes into its own when describing Harvey the musician covering the time from his initial dabbling with jazz, blues and early rock `n' roll in 1950s Glasgow to eventual rock stardom on the international stage in the mid `70s.
It depicts Harvey's first break after winning a Scotland's answer to Tommy Steele competition in 1957, his several year stint into the mid `60s with the Big Soul Band and his Beatles-like experience in Hamburg, where two of his four pre-SAHB albums were cut. Incidentally, it is told that the `Fab Four' themselves had played second billing to Harvey at a concert at Grangemouth town hall around 1960 when they were known as the Silver Beatles!
The remainder of the `60s and turn of the `70s saw little progress in Harvey's musical ambitions, although a 5-year long playing part in the controversial West End hit musical `Hair' at least helped keep those ambitions simmering - as well as putting food on the table!
By now the dedicated SAHB fan will have started to piece together what would eventually shape Harvey's role, style and repertoire in the Sensational Alex Harvey Band, formed from the West of Scotland based Tear Gas in 1972. This would be the turning point in Harvey's fortunes and the start of his most successful period musically.
Mainly due to the abundance of press coverage and witness accounts of concerts during the SAHB years, half the book is dedicated to this period.
The reader is treated to a detailed and often anecdotal rendering of the band's punishing schedule over the next 5 years, producing no less than 7 studio albums, 15 singles, several TV appearances and numerous UK, European and US tours.
By 1975, both the album `Tomorrow Belongs To Me' and single `Delilah' were top 10 UK hits. And with the now legendary Christmas concerts at the Glasgow Apollo in the same year, Alex Harvey, aged 40yrs, was at the height of his powers, with SAHB acclaimed by many as Britain's greatest live rock band.
Of course, it is Harvey the consummate entertainer that he will best be remembered. With his vaudeville-like stage shows, fans were often mesmerised with Harvey's experimental approach when combining theatre and music, which provided him with the perfect medium to play out his boyhood fantasies of comic book characters and street gang heroes, such as his ultra ego, Vambo. Who else would think of blacking-up as Al Johnson in the Deep South to advocate racial harmony or appear as Hitler on stage in Germany to preach against the dangers of fascism! Always one with an opinion on most subjects, Harvey would like nothing else that to lecture, both on and off stage, on the evils of violence and drugs and looking after the environment.
But within two short years it was all over. Beset with health, alcohol and financial problems, Harvey seemed to be losing his creative edge and artistic drive. Moreover, the death of SAHB's influential manager and live-long friend, Bill Fehilly, and the departure of Hugh McKenna, the talented keyboards player credited with co-writing 59 of the band's songs, sought only to accelerate the decline and eventual split.
Ironically, for someone who was highly distrustful of the established music industry and regarded by some as the original British punk rocker, it was the up and coming punk era of the late `70s which now regarded Harvey as part of the old guard it was rebelling against.
However, despite years of overwork, exhaustion, periods of depression and threats of litigation, Harvey soldiered on relentlessly for a further 5 years producing his final two albums - the first with the newly formed jazz-based The New Band and the second with the band's name now changed to The Alex Harvey Band. With his new musicians and material, Harvey continued to tour but performances were patchy and his original fan base was melting away. Sales of his penultimate album `The Mafia Stole My Guitar' were disappointing and Harvey was seen as increasingly irrelevant by many in the business.
Yet, critically, the `Mafia' album was well regarded and viewed as a further turning point for Harvey. Moreover, his recently completed final album `Soldier On The Wall', which was posthumously released in 1983, provided the impetus for a European tour. But it was on his return from that tour in 1982 that Alex Harvey collapsed and died of a heart attack in Belgium.
The book's final chapter is dedicated to affectionate tributes paid to Harvey at the time, and more recently, by his family, friends and colleagues in the music business and media.
A postscript from the author sums up Harvey's life and career with comparison with the title of his most successful album `Tomorrow Belongs To Me'.
He is sorely missed.

a biography of harvey was long overdue and hats off to the author for taking the time to do it. it's extensively researched and well written. the only valid criticism is that certain people like zal cleminson and maggie bell didn't contribute. but we've waited twenty years for a harvey biog and if they don't want to play along - well it's there loss.

This book should have concentrated on Alex when he was 'The Sensational Alex Harvey'. I found this was true only when he had his Sensational Alex Harvey Band backing him up. The truth is, poor Alex was a rock star wannabe for so many years that when fame hit him, he did not know what to do with it. The author makes him out to be an angry working mans hero who feels the world screwed him over. After getting part way through the book, I felt I just got screwed. This book is wordy, self-indulgent tripe. The author repeats himself numerous times in an effort to make interesting reading, which fails miserably. Who cares what songs he recorded and did NOT sell ? Who cares that he had a drink with Joe Blow at the local pub on a rainy September night ? I am sorry I spent the money on this nonsense and would not recommend this book to anyone. My copy of this book now has a respectable place in the local landfill. If you are a Sensational Alex Harvey Band fan, you will waste your time and money on this drivel.

In the 1980s, the late Alex Harvey was feted as the "godfather of punk" for his attitude & stage persona, belying his glam-rock status of the '70s, a status which, in turn, belied his '60s R&B legend status, predated by his skiffle & Dixieland status... The story of Scots rocker Alex Harvey, the self-proclaimed "Last of the Teenage Idols", is a story long overdue. Munro's bio focuses remarks from Harvey's family and contemporaries alongside vintage interviews with the Faith Healer himself to paint a picture of a journeyman artist, more workingman than Rock Star.
Harvey's rise, fall, and rebirth as Sensational parallels the history of rock itself. As arguably the first Scottish artist to record a rock album (1964's "Alex Harvey & His Soul Band"), Harvey's career swung as wildly as his choice of cover tunes. After fronting the group that inspired Glasgow schoolgirl Lulu to record her first hit, "Shout", Harvey went on to focus on folk, then spent time as a cabaret singer before landing in the pit band of the London production of "Hair". After making several avant garde attempts at psychedelia (including stints with the jazz-tinged Rock Workshop and his own band, Giant Moth), Harvey found his place fronting the former prog band Tear Gas as his own Sensational Alex Harvey Band. As in his previous musical incarnations, Harvey's main strength as a performer lay in making other artists' songs undoubtedly his own, whether the Tom Jones chestbeater "Delilah", R&B stalwarts Lieber & Stoller's "Framed" or those of more obscure composers like Belgian Jaques Brel ("Next").
The main criticism I've heard about the book is that any die-hard Harvey fan will have heard all these stories before. That doesn't really detract from the value of the book -- any die-hard Harvey fan will have to have it, if only for the rare photos inside. Maybe once the paperback version is released Alex Harvey will finally, 20+ years after his untimely death, get the recognition he deserves as a world-wide Sensation.
