Book Description

From one of our ablest chroniclers of marriage, middle age, and urban myth, a collection of stories that subverts the standard domestic drama with an outrageousness that mixes tragedy with black humor.

In Referred Pain Lynne Sharon Schwartz surpasses her reputation as a scrupulous stylist who writes with both passion and discipline. Here, as in her earlier collections, the stories, whether realistic or fanciful, are distinguished by their intensity and their impeccable attention to the nuances of language. Her characters confront inner demons, playing out fantasies they crave and dread. On the surface, they are living ordinary lives, but Schwartz reveals their subversions and perversions with wicked wit and psychological acuity.

In the title novella, Koslowski, beset by a kind of survivor's guilt, insists to the point of absurdity that his elaborate dental work is emblematic of his immigrant parents' suffering in a German concentration camp and in the siege of Leningrad. In "Francesca," a mild professor finds himself calmly contemplating incest. In "Hostages of Fortune," a seemingly conventional couple live out an extended fantasy of raising two imaginary children. In "Sightings of Loretta," a journalist realizes he has spent years pursuing a chimerical, unfulfilled romance, while oblivious to his own wife. Several of the stories take place in the surreal realm of fantasy itself.

Schwartz, an award-winning writer, has been lauded for her precisely observed domestic dramas and comedies and described as having an anthropologist's eye for her characters and their stories. This collection will give further resonance to her already distinguished literary reputation.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Some great stories, some not so great.......2005-07-30

I loved the title story in this collection. Everything in it worked toward the perfect culmination. Some of the other stories fell a bit flat, and the ones that leaned toward the "experimental," only a couple, were not my cup of tea. Overall a very satisfying read.

5 out of 5 stars Secrets, games, conversations in our heads.......2004-04-27

The stories in this book open the window to the characters' minds. They live their public lives but we are allowed to share the private lives and their attempts to live with and avoid pain.

As always Lynne Sharon Schwartz's writing shines. Not a word is wasted. My favorite story was Deadly Nightshade. It is about a woman who breaks with the grandparents' warnings and dares to eat a "poisonous" tomato. "Nothing she did in later years came close to the elation of that single act of abandon. She was a daring woman who found no more opportunities for daring, or for the kind of daring peculiar to her, which was biting into the perilous unknown and letting it travel through her."

This was a short simple story which illustrates the book's theme of people living their lives wanting more of life but not being able to grab the brass ring for that second chance.

The stories will linger in your mind.

Book Description

A miraculous machine . . . and a nightmare!

Innova, a young gnomish recluse finds himself in a terrible situation. Tried in a gnomish court for an unfortunate accident and sentenced to spend months at the bottom of Mt. Nevermind tuning gnomeflingers, young Innova makes an incredible discovery. The whole gnomish society is changed by one machine that, unlike any other gnomish invention, makes the entire mountain run like clockwork.

In the face of this, Commander Halion Khargos of the Knights of Tahkisis must fulfill his Vision, sent to him by the Dark Queen Tahkisis. He must take Mt. Nevermind.

Fergus Ryan tells the amazing story of the gnomes of Mt. Nevermind during the upheval of the Chaos War. And because they're gnomes, their adventures are punctuated with two or three explosions.

1 out of 5 stars its...its...its...so bad...soooooo bad.......2005-08-18

fergus, please never write in Dragonlance unless you research before hand. i could've written a better book and i've been with this series for two years and known nothing about the gnomes and don't have a degree in writing, english, journalism or literature. this book was flat out, the more horendous book i have ever read. with every page that i forced myself to read, a little of me died inside. the only thing good about this book was that it was Dragonlance. there is no word in any language that can describe how dispicable this book was. and im not even done yet.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Dragonlance Side Stories Ever........2004-06-07

Great book. The confusing, busy plot works perfectly with the gnomes of Mt. Nevermind. The blend of humor and drama makes for charicters you can really care about, including the often- overlooked gully dwarves.

A fun, creative, adventurous book.

5 out of 5 stars Dragonlance.......2001-01-24

When I picked up this book, the author was unknown to me or nearly anyone, and the cover was not appealing, but I have always known never to judge a book by its cover, and I take that literally. I have found that fantasy stories tend to center around iconoclastic skills, leaving great images in our minds but leaving, sometimes, the story and its effects something to be wished for. And indeed, this one began in such a way, until about halfway through the book, there was suddenly a massive amount of character development and writing development as well. Symbolism, a meaning. And it made the process of reading it so enthralling, that among fantasy stories I have read, it sits high up there, above the Hobbit.

2 out of 5 stars Jeez.......2000-11-24

Weeeeelllll.... let's just say that this book was... disappointing. The characters didn't act at all like gnomes; sure there was craziness, but they seemed too.... human. The plot was pretty poorly explained, jumping around, and thoroughly confusing. The whole Paradise Machine bit was... totally unconvincing and idiotic. Machines with a mind of their own that repair themselves and build things on their own, and operate with the evaporation of water! It was not a good book. Whenever Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman wrote a book, i was totally enthralled, but this book left me thinking "I might as well finish it; I payed for it...." *sigh* most of the books not by Weis and Hickman don't seem to _fit_ with the Dragonlance world, and seem to have shaky and weak explanations. Anywho, get this book if you want, but only if it's the only thing left on the shelf.

1 out of 5 stars Time to hang it up........2000-11-10

I can honestly say that I believe the DragonLance well has finally run dry. This was the worst book that I have e...ee...eeever read. The concept of the Gnomes behavior was untouched upon in other books, and the concept of the Paradise Machine was total moronic. I agree with the review that said that Commander Khargos couldn't lace his boots without the help of the Dark Queen. A little research and planning would have made this book much better. So far the only good thing I can say is the line about Gully Dwarves being expendable (with expenadable supposed to mean brave) was very funny. One line however, can not save this book. Save your money. This one isn't worth it.

A wonderful collection of stories that you'll dip into over and over. Russell's social and political concerns (freedom, equality, social justice) are combined with clever, witty stories that use the SF genre without getting bogged down in science.

    Book Description

The first book to examine the spiritual and therapeutic practice of retreat in physical darkness to explore inner light

    • Shows how experiencing complete darkness over prolonged periods helps in developing mental clarity and creativity

    • Draws upon many indigenous and spiritual traditions that use this technique

The use of ceremonial darkness is a classic and cross-cultural method for exploring hidden aspects of unconscious and super-conscious states, accessing invisible landscapes, and embracing the deeper recesses of the self. In Darkness Visible Heaven and Buxton examine the spiritual and therapeutic practice of taking retreat in physical darkness.

For millennia mystics and sages have used darkness as a spiritual tool for breaking with their pasts, prior conditioning, and the limited reality of their societies. Spiritual seekers from many traditions--Celtic, Eastern, indigenous North and South American, Tibetan, and African--have used darkness as a tool for spiritual enlightenment. Heaven and Buxton show how experiencing complete darkness, even for only a period of hours, brings about a remarkable clarity and mental stillness and thus provides a springboard for creativity, intuition, and spiritual development. They include exercises that explore lucid levels of dream consciousness, drawing both from their experience as teachers of this method and from the many cultures that include this practice in their spiritual traditions. Darkness Visible shows how deprivation of sight can truly teach us to see.

I have not written many reviews but this book was a wonderful surprise. I borrowed it and have had a hard time giving it back until I get my own copy! I especially like the exercises that allow you to explore and practice on a small scale and see the wisdom gained by this spiritual practice. Highly recommended!

Ross Heaven is one of the finest wrietrs in spirituality. This is his second best book in my opinion, only dragged down by his collabration with a lesser author whos own work is questionqble. Mr Heaven makes some wonderful insights once again and this book taught me so much. I prase it hily.

The Big Book of Juices and Smoothies features 365 healthy and delicious recipes. Many of which can be prepared with nothing more than a blender. Each drink is rated for its energy/immune boosting properties, detoxifying qualities, and skin enhancing abilities, while an at-a-glance nutrient profile lists vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients. Juice plans, such as a “detox weekend” or an “immune-boosting week” round out the book.

Great layout, great pictures, and great information! This book has a nice selection of fruit drinks and vegetable drinks as well. Each drink has a 5 section, 5 star rating. There is a spot on nutrition so you know the vitamins and minerals you are getting. A great book to keep you healthy!

    5 out of 5 stars This book.......2007-01-13

Is a lifesaver. From getting so overwhelmed with the exotic concoctions in the juice/smoothie books which sit on my shelf, I happened to pick this one up at the local juice bar. The girl there apologetically said it wasn't for sale, but from what I read whilst standing there, I have to say I have never had a book impress me so much in so few seconds. I ordered one, and the rest is history.
    1. Brilliant,logical layout
    2. Non overwhelming recipes (for those of us who don't want to live in the kitchen)
    3. Surprisingly informative, from the basic fruit/ veg nutritional facts at the start to the 1 to 5 star rating after each recipe. Brilliant.
I love this book. It is my favourite, and as a raw foodist, I have stacks of books.
If you buy it, you'll see what I mean.

    5 out of 5 stars excellent juices.......2006-01-05

I recently bought this book and so far I really love it and enjoy every juice I make. I love the idea that she arranged the juices by the kinds of fruits and veggies you want to use and that every juice has ratings for immunity, detox, skin, energy and digestion.
    I higly reccomend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Very few ingredients needed for tasty smoothies.......2005-10-02

Originally I bought this book for my father in law, who is a cancer survivor and on a liquid diet. I thought the immunity and energy smoothies would help. He loves the book, b/c he was trying to create his own smoothies, with some gross results. (not to mention a huge waste of money on the ingredients!) Then I decided to buy the book for myself. Last year I had purchased a $$ vita-mix blender from a home show and had never used it..(which pissed my husband off immensely) The book of recipes it came with had so many ingredients, some, in which my opinion werent the healthiest. This book is excellent, with most smoothies having just 3-4 ingredients! Our fave is Morning Mash, with an orange, 2 bananas, a pear and 8 tbsp of apple juice! Delicious!

5 out of 5 stars The Big Book of Juices and Smoothies: 365 Natural Blends for Health and Vitality Every Day.......2005-08-04

I love this book. It has nutritional info, tells a lot about different fruits and the recipes are fantastic.

1 out of 5 stars Quilts Among the Plain People.......2007-01-12

I was disappointed with this book - perhaps I had misread what it was about. Firstly it is in black and white on quite ordinary paper. I was expecting a tutorial book but found this leant more to the history of Quilting in the Amish community. Perhaps this might be acceptable to someone who had not heard of the Amish people and their association with quilts.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Info.......2006-11-10

Very interesting book. I was not disappointed in the least when I received it. Would recommend it for any quilter.

4 out of 5 stars Quilts among the Plain People.......2005-03-31

An introduction to a quieter, simpler way of living. Photographs of Amish & Mennonite landscapes graphically depict the source of their traditional designs. Everyday aspects of life find their way into quiltmaking. Not a how-to-quilt book as much as an interpretation of nature into artform. Ever wonder how those quilts got their names and inspiration? This little book will inform you and encourage you to use creativity in your own life.

1 out of 5 stars small innocuous tourist pamphlet.......2004-02-29

No color, no patterns, no quilt specifics. Just general Amish-info. Mostly talks about present-day quilting for sales to tourists, polester batts and poly-cotton fabrics, as though more traditional quilts are just history.
If you're a quilter, spend a few dollars more to own intriguing and satisfying books -- e.g, *****Amish Crib Quilts from the Midwest: 90 color photos which clearly show every great color combination and quilting pattern + dimension, date, fabric info, etc. Any quilt pictured can go straight to big-bed size w/ application of a little arithmetic. Also gives us a new appreciation of cotton chambrays & simple warm baby quilts.

Childhood is undergoing a revolution.  The philosophy of bringing up children as separate from adults is a thing of the past.  In pre-schools, more and more attention is being paid to designing spaces that accommodate the very young and meet their needs in a way that fosters dialogue and communication.  When it comes to home life, busy parents want to spend free time with their children that they will both enjoy.  Children are no longer just tagging along and fitting in, they are being provided for with spaces that are stimulating, fun, imaginative, peaceful, or just plain practical.  Children are no longer adults in waiting – they have their own culture, and contemporary children’s interiors are very much about defining the way childhood is being designed in the twenty-first century.

This book showcases a wide variety of interiors designed for the very young from around the world.  These range from creches, nurseries and preschools, to museums, restaurants, bedrooms, playspaces, shops and hotels.  Each architect or designer has given considerable thought to making their space – whether public or private - workable and beautiful, and their approaches are inspirational.  If you are looking for design ideas, or just want somewhere great to take your child at the weekend, this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars WRTH Handbook 2003.......2007-01-12

The information in each edition is updated from previous editions, however I would recommend saving them as part of a library for the vast amount of reference material covered. The radio reviews are quite helpful in choosing a new and or different type of receiver. Tom MI

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful DXers Reference.......2003-03-22

This books' got it all, LW , MW , SW, FM, TV listings. What got me hooked on this book is the LW/MW radio listings. Shortwave guide is a great listeners data source. There is also better reviews on popular high end equipment. I have owned this book title since 1993. This is a great book if you
do all band DXing. The greatest addition is the FM US listings, for major cities , great for the road travellers, and
serious DXers. If you DX or chew the rag with the world, get
this book, you'll thank yourself. It may be in the library,
but you can't put it down once you pick it up. I have had this
book with me, and seriously the 2002 edition is a little worn
out, and I am really ready for the 2003 edition, and so forth!

        4 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2000-09-07

The WRTH is the best reference book you can probably buy for a serious shortwave listener (SWL-er) or DX-er. The frequency listings and the broadcasters' information is the most complete one available in a book format. Two watch-outs:

1.- Information on local AM and TV broadcasters is incomplete and sometimes outdated. But anyway, this book's primary intention is not to give you details about your local TV or radio stations - for that purpose better buy "TV-guide".

2.- The SW frequency listings in the WRTH 2000 edition are missining information about tropical band (local) stations. The missing information is available via Internet on the WRTH site. The stations are correctly listed in the country sections, but omitted in the frequency summary.

The section about receiver reviews and propagation data are very complete and professional, much metter than Passport to Worldband Radio. The only missing part is information in which past editions of WRTH specific receivers have been reviewed or how to obtain a re-print of these reviews. I tried to contact WRTH by e-mail in numerous ocassions to get this info, without success.

In summary, WRTH is the best reference book for a serious SWL-er or DX-er, but it is more speciallized and limited in broad SW subject coverage than, for example, the Passport to Worlband Radio (also available on Amazon).

1 out of 5 stars 1999 Is The Last One for Me Until U.S. BCB is updated.......2000-05-17

I travel North America in a recreational vehicle, acquiring a new front yard every week, typically 250 miles from the preceding one. Each location brings a new set of domestic AM stations, many of which were not heard at the prior location. In the 1999 WRTH, most of the stations are not mentioned by frequency and/or call. None, that I'm aware of, commenced operation less than 12 months ago. All the requisite data is available free at the FCC web site, in easily converted text file format, updated daily. When WRTH has made its U.S. BCB lists current, I'll buy one.

5 out of 5 stars World Radio and Television Handbook.......2000-05-09

Great reference for elecrtromagnetic communication services.
