Book Description
From Anna Quindlen, acclaimed author of Blessings, Black and Blue, and One True Thing, a superb novel about two sisters, the true meaning of success, and the qualities in life that matter most.
It’s an otherwise ordinary Monday when Meghan Fitzmaurice’s perfect life hits a wall. A household name as the host of Rise and Shine, the country’s highest-rated morning talk show, Meghan cuts to a commercial break–but not before she mutters two forbidden words into her open mike.
In an instant, it’s the end of an era, not only for Meghan, who is unaccustomed to dealing with adversity, but also for her younger sister, Bridget, a social worker in the Bronx who has always lived in Meghan’s long shadow. The effect of Meghan’s on-air truth telling reverberates through both their lives, affecting Meghan’s son, husband, friends, and fans, as well as Bridget’s perception of her sister, their complex childhood, and herself. What follows is a story about how, in very different ways, the Fitzmaurice women adapt, survive, and manage to bring the whole teeming world of New York to heel by dint of their smart mouths, quick wits, and the powerful connection between them that even the worst tragedy cannot shatter.
Customer Reviews:
shallow.......2007-09-27
It's hard for me to believe how someone who could write a novel as brilliant as "One True Thing" and also so many fabulous columns, can write a book like Rise and Shine, that falls so far short of a promising mark.
I had great hopes for this book because Quindlen has handled family subjects so well before in One True thing, and because it's such a promising subject -- two sisters, one the 'show pony' and the other the mule. Kind of similar to the conflict in One True Thing, the conflict between the "Jane" and "Elizabeth" female roles.
But unlike One True Thing, this book steps back from really engaging. It's hard to know why. The author had the talent. Either she's not willing to sweat a little and pull out the stops to write such a novel, or perhaps she is just a little afraid to really take on the subject and just skirted the edges. We all derive such inspiration from our personal lives and it's hard to play around with living inspirational subjects, something that wasn't an issue in One True Thing. Or perhaps the old saying is true, that everyone has one great novel in them. I don't know. But Rise and Shine left me flat, and in spite of its great promise proved to be a shallow and unengaging read.
Underwhelming.......2007-09-21
The premise of this story was intriquing and promising, but the telling of the story and the characters proved disappointing. It felt formulaic with characters who were not especially likeable, interesting or inspiriring, particularly Megan. I lost interest early on and didn't really care what happened, but continued through it because I expected more and better from Anna Quindlen. Didn't get it...she struck out this round. Everyone's entitled to an occasional dud.
A Fantastic story .......2007-08-17
I have always enjoyed Anna Quindlen's books and Rise and Shine was just another great read. Her writing style in this book was fresh and her characters were realistic and the dialog was excellent. A great read and I would gladly recommend this to anyone.
A beautifully written novel.......2007-08-06
I enjoyed Rise and Shine, and found it a joy to read. Anna Quindlen's words flow like poetry as the plot unfolds. The story of the Fitzmaurice sisters is engaging- I read this book in 2 days, as I was not able to put it down. The story was not predictable- I liked the plot twists throughout. Rise and Shine examines many different topics- from the bond of sisterhood, the plight of the impoverished, marriage, motherhood, and finding one's way in the world. I have read several other books by Anna Quindlen, but Rise and Shine really does shine above the rest. It is her best work yet!
Rambling Thoughts.......2007-07-27
It took me 3 tries to get into this book as the rambling never seemed to stop. It was like being inside the character's mind ALL the time. The story line was interesting enough after I finally got into it but I kept wanting to quit reading it until I was about halfway through the book and realized by this point I might as well see how it ends. The end was a downer though.

Portable Door - funny with mind-twisting supernatural situations. .......2007-07-03
The storytelling keeps you hooked, but the premise is so far-fetched that it detracts from the plot. Holt is a master at storytelling, setting up wacky situations and realistic tension between his characters. His dialogue is sparse, but accurate in conveying the crux of the plot, like when Paul forgets his date with Sophie and she detects something is wrong when there is a minute lapse in the conversation. She blew him off for the ceramics guy and you don't know how she feels. I liked Expecting_Someone_Taller maybe a little better, since the the supernatural was more of a frame for the story rather than the sci-fi trappings here. I liked the love-philtre scenes and think he achieved a very original and satisfying solution to the moral paradox of the love-potion/date-rape conundrum. The ending seemed to go off in a new, unresolved direction instead of explaining the rest of my questions, but you need to do that if you are planning to write sequels, don't you?
Escapism in the Cleverest Sense.......2007-04-24
What fun! Holt plays brilliantly off literary references both new and old (everything from Harry Potter to Shakespeare to Gilbert & Sulivan) and his dry British wit is right up my alley. An absolutely delightful read. Funny, adventuresome, and clever to boot!
One of his best.......2007-01-30
This is a book so hilarious that I have repeated bits of the jokes in two settings in the two days since I finished it (the bit about Chekov. And this one little joke made people laugh so hard that tears came to their eyes. And I can't tell jokes. And it was out of context.
That's how funny this is. Douglas Adams meets the Office.
Typicaly weird Holt, outstanding read.......2007-01-26
Holt is sort of a genre of his own. His stories are always: entertaining, original,
and somewhat weird. In this one Paul (hapless dweb) takes a job at J.W. Wells & Co then things get really strange. Most of the book goes by before the plot really shakes out but it is still a fun read with good characters and a lot of screwy humor.
Obviously somewhat inspired by Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Sorcerer".
Comic Workplace Fantasy.......2007-01-10
This is the first of three books in the Paul Carpenter series by Tom Holt. The other two are 'In Your Dreams' and 'Earth, Air, Fire, and Custard.' I accidentally read the third book first and so thought that I wouldn't enjoy the first book very much, but I was wrong. I consider Tom Holt's writings to be the real world comparison of Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. Basically, it may be helpful to read them in a certain order, but in the end, it doesn't matter because they are all just as good on their own since both authors are a comic genius. While Pratchett deals with a made-up world on the back of a turtle, Holt deals with 'our' world. The Carpenter series is based around office life, with a bit of magic mixed in. Extremely funny, even if you have never worked in an office. I also love the art on the front of Holt's books, so simplistic, but precisely dead-on as to what the story is about. For those who have never read Holt before, pick up one of his books and give it a try!

1958: The Eisenhower-commissioned Brookings Report recommends that any future discovery of extraterrestrial intelligence be kept secret from the public.
1968: Congress grants NASA the power to indefinitely "quarantine" anyone exposed to alien life or artifacts.
1993: Just 48 hours from the Red Planet, NASA's Mars Observer probe inexplicably disappears and is declared "lost."

With the help of Jake Deaver, the maverick commander of the last Apollo mission to the moon, Angela's prepared to pursue the truth into the darkest corners of Washington politics. Thrilling to the end.......2007-10-09
It's been a long time that I've been so captivated by a book that I couldn't put it down until the last page.
The storyline is disturbingly plausible, and I found myself immersed not just in a fiction book, but seriously questioning so much of which I (naively) assumed as truth.
Well done on your first book Gary! It's awesome.
Not hard to guess Gary Tigerman's political views... .......2006-05-24
I read this book because I am both a UFO and sci-fi fan, and love good conspiracy theories. This book did not disappoint in those departments. The story concerns a grand conspiracy that has been around since the Truman years, and has been pulling the real strings in Washington all this time. The author slowly weaves a tale that starts out a complete mystery and keeps you guessing until the end. So far, so good.
But I could only rate it three stars because of the author's political biases come through and really distract from the story.
For example, when he lists which presidents were in on the evil conspiracy, and which ones were unaware of it, of course, by coincidence, the ones "in" were all Republicans, and all the ones "out" just happen to be Democrats. He also throws in comments (really unnecessary to the plot) about how only people like Republicans are interested in wasteful programs like SDI, etc. There are many similar references sprinkled through the book, most of them unnecessary to the plot.
A book needs to have some point of view, but c'mon, the book reads like an advertisement for the Democratic Party - making the characters themselves seem terribly two-dimentional.
Somewhat thought-provoking.......2005-09-23
Angela Browning, a beautiful, strong-willed host of a PBS television show about Science, receives a mysterious disk showing photos of pyramids on Mars. After verifying these are probably not fakes, she seeks outside help in uncovering the secrets behind this information.
It sounds like a wonderful set up for a great story. In my opinion, Mr. Tigerman doesn't disappoint. This is a science/political novel aspiring to be read as a thriller. While it's a tad weak as a great "thriller", it truly is a good novel. The plot is great, while the characters are wonderfully written. I found very little wrong with this novel after having finished a truly dreadful one along these same lines.
I'm a reader who likes to thumb through as much fiction as I can. I think most casual readers who like Dan Brown's "Deception Point," or Ken Follet's "Code to Zero" will enjoy this one as well-paced entertainment.
*Yawn*.......2005-08-26
First, I gave The Orion Protocol a thrid star because I finished the book, but, I really don't know why I finished the book.
It certainly isn't much of a thriller. Hardly any tension; the reason the "bad guys" were after the "good guys" is because the good guys find evidence of structures on the Moon and on Mars and they were afraid earth's population would go bonkers and vote Democratic or something - its not really clear.
And what do they want to do to the main "good Guy"? Basically discredit him and send him to a nice quiet place where all the jackets have very long sleeves. They can't even work up enough energy to want to kill him.
You can do better than waste your $7.99 on this book. But, be forwarned, it is *really* white bread.
Mission to Mars fanatics..........2005-08-07
For those of you who enjoy reading Mars conspiracy books, this delivers a rather thrilling tale. Tigerman does a nice job of weaving many of the conspiracy theories about life on Mars and hidden secrets into a pretty decent thriller. Some of the characters are a little hokey, but not a bad book. A good read.

A sauce for every occasion.......2007-08-11
This book really is "The Complete Book of Sauces". It would be hard to imagine what sauce recipe ISN'T in it. Not only does it contain virtually any kind of sauce recipe you could want, but it offers helpful ideas on what to serve with what. Also, the recipes are "doable" rather than some I've seen in other books that are so complex no one but a professional chef would even attempt them. In addition, the price was right, and it arrived very promptly in pristine condtion.
Excellent.......2007-01-10
Just the book I was looking for! Excellent coverage of sauces for beginners to "old hats"! Thanks!
Numerous variations to try in a lifetime!.......2000-11-06
There are definitely more sauces in this book than you can possibly try. They are divided and arranged by type and purpose, which makes it easy to pick out the sauce that you need. Some of the ingredients are somewhat hard to find, but most recipes can be prepared with minimal fuss. My favorite part of this book is the marinades chapter.. you can combine a marinade with a similar sauce and end up with something spectacular. Another useful chapter is the fruit sauces chapter, which proved to be very valuable on that special occasion when you wanted to enhance the flavor of your desserts. No photos in this book though.
The Complete Book of Sauces.......1999-12-04
This book is excellent, I have had success with every recipe I've tried. I refer to this book almost on a daily basis to make my dishes more interesting. If you buy only one sauce book this is the one to buy.
One simple books adds fun and life to almost any dish........1998-10-10
It's now Oct 1998. I bought the book in 1990 when it first came out. I'm a business man, not a gourmet, but with this Sallie Williams book, polite lovely ladies have almost tackled me to get 'my recipes'. I have fun cooking because of this book, more than with any other cookbook. I pick a meat or vegetable, and pick a sauce. It always works, and leaves me feeling like I'm creating by selecting the combination of some dish with a sauce, plus dreaming up ways to display the food. So far it never seems to get boring, and after nine years there are still a lot of sauces I've not yet tried. I think the book will be with me for the duration. Highly recommended. The only downside is that 'favorite' sauces are easy to find in the book, and thus you have to avoid the temptation to stop exploring sauces not yet experienced.
Book Description
Forget about those fattening supermarket dressings. You do have an alternative. Making your own dressings at home is not only more healthful and more affordable, it is remarkably easy. The more than 100 dressings in this book can be whisked together quickly or prepared in a blender or food processor in seconds. Best of all, they taste great! And as Paulette Mitchell explains, these recipes will introduce you to a whole new repertoire of toppings for chicken, seafood, pasta, grains, beans, vegetables, greens, fruit salads, and more. The recipe introductions include some of her favorite enticing salad combinations, and you'll also find a handy chart with serving suggestions at the back of the book. Paulette suggests these dressings for pasta salads: Basil-Sherry Vinaigrette, page 31 Creamy Lemon-Caper Dressing, page 93 Honey-Dijon Dressing, page 107 Creamy Parmesan-Peppercorn Dressing, page 94 The Complete Book of Dressings offers flavors for every palate, from cool and creamy to exotic and spicy. Try them all and unleash your creativity. Some of Paulette's tips for successful salads:
- Most homemade dressings improve in flavor if allowed to sit for half an hour before serving, but remember to shake, stir, or whisk them just before adding to a salad.
- For a change, mix and match temperatures; serve a warm vinegar-and-oil dressing over chilled or room-temperature ingredients.

A Wonderful & Unique Book of Creative Dressings.......2004-03-03
I have been using this recipe book for almost ten years and have not tired of it because it remains the most inventive and simply delicious book of dressings I have ever come across.
great little book.......2004-01-16
I love this book! It has so many great ideas, and not just for plain old lettuce... great suggestions for fish, chicken, fruit, etc. I love the fact that it describes different vinegars, oils, lettuces... it gives you a better understanding of what flavours go well together. Very informative. The recipes are simple and quick to prepare as well. I definitely recommend this book for anyone who is looking to expand beyond oil & vinegar.
A wonderful basis for anyone who loves variety in salads.......1999-08-25
I had tried to use my usual stock of cook books (i.e. NY Times, JOC, etc) but found them wanting in this department. Since purchasing this book I have received many compliments on the variety of my dressings. Although I was often complimented before obtaining this resource--this really expanded my repertoire.
Excellent reference for chronic or occasional cooks.......1998-08-31
This is a wonderful book! It is well organized and contains lots of ideas for variations. Each recipe lists the nutritional values, and there are many recipes that fit easily into a low fat/calorie diet. The author explains what purpose each ingredient serves, and also discusses substitutions and their consequences. Each recipe is on a separate page and are formatted so they are easy to read. Nice use of artwork and variation of fonts, if you like that. I do. This book is a bargain, too!
Dressings for nearly any food, not just salads........1998-08-24
This book provides more information than just dressing recipes. The author gives useful suggestions for creating interesting salads, how to buy and store ingredients, and nutritional information for each recipe. I'm planning on making good use of this book.

Fantastic guide to training a real family friend & protector.......1999-03-04
Weiss & Tom Rose, his co-author, are American experts in the German dog sport, Schutzhund ("protection dog"). Explaining principles and methods they used in training champion protection dogs, the authors demonstrate how to select and train a dog that will not only protect your home, but also be a friendly compainion to your family and friends. Anyone can go out and find a mean, angry dog that will protect a house just as well as it will bite your guests. Likewise, anyone can find a dog so friendly that it will lick your child's face just as easily as asking an intruder to shake its paw. Finding and training a dog that will protect your home but also romp and play with your freinds and loved ones is far, far more difficult. Let these experts show you the way.
