Book Description

1913. Edna Ferber, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Show Boat and Giant, achieved her first great success with a series of stories she published in American Magazine between 1911 and 1913. The stories feature Emma McChesney, a smart, savvy, stylish, divorced mother, and Midwest traveling sales representative for T. A. Buck's Featherloom skirts and petticoats. With one hand on her sample case and the other fending off advances from salesmen, hotel clerks, and other predators, Emma holds on tightly to her reputation. Her experience has taught her that it's best to stick to roast beef, medium, rather than experiment with fancy sauces and exotic dishes. Roast Beef, Medium is the first of three volumes chronicling the travels and trials of Emma McChesney. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing.

4 out of 5 stars no title.......2005-11-09

Charming, light stories in chronological order about the adventures of Emma McChesney in 1913, as a traveling saleswoman for the T. A. Buck's Featherloom Petticoat Company. This is quite a feminist book, in spite of its good-natured humor. Each story is complete in itself, but they do follow each other in time. References to vaudeville and early movies. Emma is divorced and supporting a 17-19 year-old son. Husband was a rotter, and she accepted no support from him. She is 36-39 years old. Could be written into movie script. Ferber is the author of "Giant" and "Show Boat", the former not written til the early 50s. My copy has wonderful illustrations. The title refers to moderation in life as being the best way to survive.

4 out of 5 stars Ferber never goes out of date.......2002-04-25

I bought this reprint because of the James Montgomery Flagg illustrations, but I enjoyed the story a great deal. Emma is a "drummer" in her mid-30s, an agent to retail stores throughout the Midwest of the T. A. Buck Featherloom Petticoat Company. She's a woman in what was, before the Great War, decidedly a man's world, but she beats most of them at it all hollow. She's claimed to be the first businesswoman in American literature and she serves as a mouthpiece for Ferber's feminist politics and her Progressive attitude toward the commercial world. This was the first of three collections (all made up of stories serialized in magazines) and they were immensely popular in their day -- especially with women, though Theodore Roosevelt was a fan. too. In fact, Emma was Ferber's first real hit and paved the way for her prolific later career. The style, of course, tends somewhat to effusive overwriting, but you get the same in almost any popular literature written at the turn of the century. Good stuff!

        Book Description

"I think I ought to tell you," she began, "that I never was a minister's daughter, and I don't remember ever havin' been deserted by my sweetheart when I was young and trusting. If I was to draw a picture of my life it would look like one of those charts that the weather bureau gets out-one of those high and low barometer things, all uphill and downhill like a chain of mountains in a kid's geography." -from "Pink Tights and Ginghams" The critics of her day called her the greatest American woman novelist, and one, in 1918, called her character Emma McChesney "one of the cheeriest, truest, and most helpful characters given to American readers in recent years." Edna Ferber rose to fame, in fact, on her short stories about the adventures of Emma, a sophisticated traveling underwear saleswoman about whom the phrase "one smart cookie" might have been coined. This 1913 collection of some of those tales is an excellent introduction to Emma, and to Ferber, whose vivid prose and sharply realized characters continue to make her work among the most enjoyable in American literature. Ferber's piercing perspective offers a keen insight on the foibles of American society, and finds the undercurrents of hypocrisy and frivolity with intelligence and humor. American novelist EDNA FERBER (1885-1968) was a member of the Algonquin Round Table, the unofficial society of New York City literary wits. She won the Pulitzer Prize in 1924 for her novel So Big; among her other works are Showboat (1926), Cimarron (1929), Giant (1952), and Ice Palace (1958).

5 out of 5 stars Good book for Witch World fans.......2003-11-26

I almost didn't get this because of a bad review and rating on Amazon.com, but this is really a good book. It is in the spirit of the other Witch World books, and it had an interesting new viewpoint, focusing on a young baron from Alizon (who almost seems human, in spite of the strange culture he lives in). It is very readable, and kept me interested the whole way: I sat down to read it the day I got it in the mail, and couldn't quit until I finished it about 1 AM. This is probably not the first Witch World book to read (you might have trouble figuring out the context), but it explains some events referred to in Warding of the Witch World. If you are a Witch World fan, you shouldn't hesitate to get this book.

i have read many of Nortons books, and myself own about 20. I have loved almost all of them, and never before have i encountered one that i disliked this much. I found that i could barely finish it, which is odd for me with ANY book. I would just like to warn prospective buyers to stick to Nortons other books, most of which rate four stars or higher, but just borrow this book from the library.

5 out of 5 stars North to Alaska.......2006-06-26

This is a tie-in novel to the HIGHLANDER television series and features characters from that show.

The novel begins in San Francisco of the late 1800's, just after the end of the events described in the episode 'Double Eagle', Amanda has won a saloon from another Immortal and is running it, MacLeod is spending some time with her when Hugh Fitzcairn arrives with his student, a young Immortal Irishman named Danny. News of the Alaskan gold strike has just reached San Francisco and soon the three Immortal men have joined the rush.

The novel describes the journey the three took to reach the gold fields and then their desparate efforts to reach shelter from the brutal Alaskan winter. This is an unusual Highlander story in that the conflict here is not Immortal vs. Immortal but instead man against nature and himself. It is also unusual for a tie-in novel in that this one would appeal not just to a dedicated fan but to anyone who had even a casual familiarity with the series, in fact, it could be enjoyed by some one who had never seen either the series or movies. The descriptions of the Gold Rush, including the historical figures that are depicted are both accurate and compelling, giving the reader a true sense of the conditions and events of the time, making this one of the best tie-in novels I have ever read.

4 out of 5 stars If Jack London were an Immortal ..........2004-07-22

this might be his story. Gold has been found in the Yukon, and it seems half the world is on their way to that icy corner of Alaska. Hugh Fitzcairn, a charming womanizer and bon vivant, invites his friend Duncan Macleod along on what he believes will be a grand and profitable adventure. Hugh's student Danny comes from the desperate poverty of Five Corners, by way of the killing grounds of Antietam. To Danny, wealth means survival - he's lived in deadly poverty for long enough, and wants a taste of the good life. Macleod is already a wealthy man, but he yearns to see the Northern Lights.

This story is one long flashback. It is full of drama and description, set squarely in the center of real historical people, places, and events. There is no need for the standard "evil Immortal", the Yukon itself is danger enough. Who wants to duel when the metal of your sword hilt is cold enough to freeze the skin off your fingers? Any fan of Highlander is sure to enjoy this one.

5 out of 5 stars One of my fave Highlander tales.......2001-07-31

"White Silence" is a stand-alone novel featuring many beloved characters from the _Highlander_ milieu. In this tale, Duncan and Fitz go to the Yukon in search of gold. Surrounded by actual historical personalities, including the publisher of the Seattle newspaper, they experience many adventures (including an avalanche). Long-time fans of the series will recognize the events leading up to the Yukon trek as those in the "Double Eagle" episode. Like the other stand-alone _Highlander_tales, this one is an entertaining read and well worth a look.

                              4 out of 5 stars Klondike Highlander.......2000-09-23

White Silence is one of the better Highlander books. It tells the story of Duncan and Fitz's time in goldrush Alaska. The characterizations were excellent (especially Duncan's), and the descriptions of place really made you feel like you were there.

The plot was good, although it did have some flaws. The behavior and fate of Fitz's student, Danny, did not really seem plausible. But that would be the only real complaint about the story.

All in all, I would say this is a really good man-against-nature story, and should be added to any Highlander fan's collection.

                              Book Description

In recent decades, religious conservatives and secular liberals have battled over the "appropriate" role of women in society. In this absorbing exploration of Women's Aglow Fellowship, the largest women's evangelical organization in the world, R. Marie Griffith challenges the simple generalizations often made about charismatic or "spirit-filled" Christian women and uncovers important connections between Aglow members and the feminists to whom they so often seem opposed. Women's Aglow is an international, interdenominational group of "spirit-filled" women who meet outside the formal church structure for healing prayer, worship, and testimony. Aglow represents a wider evangelical culture that has gained recent media attention as women inspired by the Christian men's group, Promise Keepers, have initiated parallel groups such as Praise Keepers and Promise Reapers. These groups are generally newcomers to an institutional landscape that Aglow has occupied for thirty years, but their beliefs and commitments are very similar to Aglow's. While historians have examined earlier women's prayer groups, they've tended to ignore these modern-day evangelical groups because of their assumed connection to the "religious right."
God's Daughters reveals a devotional world in which oral and written testimonies recount the afflictions of human life and the means for seeking relief and divine assistance. A relationship with God, envisioned as father, husband or lover, and friend, is a way to come to terms with pain, dysfunctional family relationships, and a desire for intimacy. Griffith's book is also valuable in showing the complex role that women play within Pentecostalism, a movement that has become one of the most important in twentieth-century world religions.

I just devoured this book sitting in a bookstore. The book is revolutionary for feminism: a great critique of feminist stereotypes of religiosity with real life stories. It opens up feminism to religion and religion to feminism by drawing out parallels ignored in dominant discourses.

As I read some of the stories, I had tears streaming down my face. I was completely engrossed by both the ethnographic elements and the theoretical arguments. Great job!

Griffith does what I thought was impossible -- makes me feel sympathetic towards "submissive" fundamentalist women. This was a required text for one of my courses at a pretty liberal seminary. It was good for all of us to remind ourselves that "the other side" is made up (mostly) of normal, well-meaning human beings of good faith.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, scholarly study of women aglow fellowship.......1999-10-31

This book is easy to read for a scholarly study. The author makes clear her own mind set in studying the subject and has succeeded in objectively describing her observations. I found it to be an interesting and informative book about a group of people with whom I have little contact and about whom I am inclined to have many prejudices. Ms. Griffith has made their interests clear and given me at least a small understanding of their world view.

I had to read this for college. I hated it! If it had been 100 pages it would have been much more interesting.

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic offering from Williamsburg!.......2004-04-21

First of all, they print and publish this little gem on property down in Colonial Williamsburg. You can visit the printing shop and watch them make the books right there! Second, the recipes and introductions to the sections are right out of old time Virginia. Not only are there a multitude of recipes to choose from with accurate sources named, but the advice on how to serve and the style with which these dishes were offered is incredible.

Each section is given a page or two of an intro on how a certain food (soup, meat, fish, etc.) was used in Colonial Williamsburg and across Virginia. There would be a little history and even some documented accounts from those that lived during the times on specific foods, venues, and the like. It really is a trip back in time. The recipes themselves are kept in the same language, so a few of them use terms and phrases no longer used in this day and age. A good dictionary or a culinary guide should get you through those recipes. Still, most are easily understandable and not difficult to make at all. Best of all, they keep true to the originals from way back when. Some of the entries even have alternate ways of preparing the same dish, either more updated or using differing ingredients.

Overall, this is a fantastic cookbook, not only chock full of recipes, but with a wealth of knowledge about the area and the times. If you like history and cooking (especially themed cooking), this is a must-have and should be on your shelf right away. Happy eating and enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Tons of Info.......2002-07-11

This book has almost all the right things to be a hit. It has tons of pictures, gun tests, gun specifications, and hard to find information about guns never built. You can read it once and be amazed and then you can still pick it up and learn more. you can never stop learning from it. The reason I gave it four stars, though, is because of its lack in amount of guns. I understand it is the fifth installment in a series, so I can't wait for the sixth!

                                              2 out of 5 stars Limited M16 information.......2002-04-26

As a builder and collector of AR-15's, I purchased this book in the hopes of getting some new info on the military versions of the rifle. The cover of the book certainly caught my eye, and perhaps that was the intention. However, I found myself getting a bit "depressed" as page after page of non-M16 info was thumbed through. Finally, after reaching nearly the end, there was one story on the M4 Carbine. It was just enough to make me keep the book. That's more than I can say about a few other books I also ordered.

2 out of 5 stars A big disappointment with little real info.......2001-08-22

I was really disappointed with this book. It was more of a outlet for the authors to brag about themselves and complain about their ugly guns that were never excepted and produced by the military.

When you think "assault weapon" you think AR15, AK47, AK74, FAL, right?

There was almost ZERO info on the FAL. How can you right a book on assault weapons and not dedicate pages to the arm of the free world, the assault weapon used by over 90 countries?

There was little info on the AR or AK too. No real shooting techniques, cleaning ideas, or model info.

If you are interested in reading about the authors home made guns and a UGLY 22 cal. machine gun, this book is for you.

If you want valuable info on real assault weapons and there many variations look somewhere else.

4 out of 5 stars Not as concrete as the previous edition but still ok to read.......2001-01-30

The author seems to like German firearms and hate Russian AKs. A lot more guns are covered in this latest edition, but the objective descriptions on many of the guns are less detailed when compared to the previous edition.

3 out of 5 stars I didn't buy this book for political opinion.......2000-07-27

I really like books on guns and guns themselves but I was really disappointed with the ham-handed editorializing in this supposedly objective review of the world's assault rifles. I thought guns were inert but after reading this book you'll see that Soviet Bloc weapons were the evil tools of the commies. Thus only begrudging praise is given to what is by any standard the BEST assault rifle ever made- the AK-47 and its ilk. We learn that the Red Army put Ppsh41's into the hands of housewives at the Battle of Stalingrad because "international atheistic socialism" didn't respect the divinity of women. I don't know which of the two genius' who wrote this book researched that little factoid but I believe it is based on the early defense of one of Stalingrad's factory works by female workers which astounded and depressed the Germans. Why aren't German WW2 guns are called the tools of the "international fascist murderers". Its depressing to still have to deal with Cold War misinformation. Having to wade through the authors' political baggage made this a tedious read, although the illustrations and technical info is good.

This book is a very simple telling of Suzanne's start to finish career as a ballet dancer and muse of Balanchine. The relationship between Balanchine and Farrell is certainly not to be described as firey and passionate, only perhaps, as innevitable because of how well they got on together and how they both seemed to understand ballet the same way. They both were always willing to experiment with there medium, and with Balanchine to conduct and Farrell to execute, they rarely failed. An enjoyable narrative, wonderful and touching.
