5 out of 5 stars Seance at Baker House.......2006-12-10

The book moves along at a fast pace. Each story is written well and interesting enough to keep you from putting it down. Yet each one is short enough so you don't lose interest and then you are drawn into the next one.

5 out of 5 stars Tales of the world I never knew and never will.......2000-03-21

Thanks to my grandparents, who came to America in the first decade of the 20th century, I grew up and have had a good life. Thanks to my grandparents, I didn't become a piece of ash or a few tossed out bones in an Eastern European field at the age of 2. Wars are wars; they've occured throughout human history, but in most of them, whole civilizations didn't disappear. But the Eastern European Jewish world is gone forever. I might belong to the same gene pool, but compared to the characters in Isaac Bashevis Singer's stories, I'm as American as apple pie. Irish-Americans can discover their roots in Ireland, Chinese-Americans in China, and so on, but not me. My cultural roots are gone forever. The only way I can learn them is through reading literature written by Singer, Shalom Aleichem, Isaac Babel and others who describe that vanished world. So, obviously, my interest and pleasure in reading such wonderful tales as appear in THE SEANCE and OTHER STORIES is all the more. Never mind my personal reasons. These amazing stories, by a Nobel Prize winner, will stay with you for a long time. The strange, sad characters afflicted by poverty and by life, bring us face to face with common human personalities of all times and places, while also depicting the conditions and peculiar relationships of Jews in Poland too. Magic, religion, animals, thieves, rabbis, prostitutes, mystics, Holocaust survivors, Talmudic scholars, prisoners, books, butchers and shopkeepers crowd the pages. In each story, you find pathos and tragedy, happiness and satisfaction, tensions and transformations. Two of the stories, "The Seance" and "The Letter Writer" must rank with the best stories I have ever read; none of the others are bad. If you have never read Singer, this is an excellent book to start with. If you have, you know what I am talking about. This is the great writer at the top of his form.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent - as good as it gets!.......1999-11-30

Isaac Bashevis Singer was no doubt one of the greatest short story writers - ever! The various collections in the end also earned him a very well deserved Nobel Prize for literature in 1978. Several of his stories were first published in magazines like The New Yorker, Encounter and Playboy. The first collection I read was Passions and Other Stories, which immediately made me realise what a master Isaac Bashevis Singer was. Later I have read several of his novels and short stories, where especially the collections Gimpel the Fool, Short Friday and The Seance are at least as good as Passions. All a magnificent world of Isaac Bashevis Singer's saints and sinners. Sad, funny, ironic, poignant and seeming to come from Singer's pen without any efforts. This is what good short stories is all about!

5 out of 5 stars An all time favorite.......2006-05-12

If there is one book that I will forever treasure - it will be this one. This is the book that introduced me to science fiction/fantasy stories.

It was written wonderfully that the magical aspects seems so realistic. The descriptions of the Witch World were so fascinating, and the magic the witches and adepts do were very compelling - vividly described that one would think it could happen. "A place here and yet not here..."

Eydryth and Alon make good "music" together. Their love story was so beautifully intertwined with the greater themes of the plot. While it is part of a series, the book can also be a stand alone story.

          I strongly recommend it!

          5 out of 5 stars MAGICAL!.......2006-01-16

I disagree whole-heartedly with whoever wrote the review entitled 'Bizarre Conversations'.

I was not a big reader when I was 15 (10 years ago)and I picked up this book because it was only 50 cents. It was the best 50 cents I have ever spent. It completely changed my opion about reading and I have been an AVID reader ever since!

This is a wonderful tale of magic and adventure, with a dash of romance no less. It is still on my self to this day and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone!

          5 out of 5 stars Songsmith.......2005-09-19

I found the service I received from the seller to be prompt and accurate. If the seller were to offer other merchandise that I wanted I would certainly be inclined to purchase from them.

          5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL STORY!.......2000-10-02

I loved this book so much. Normally I do not like sci-fi but my mom picked out this book. I had to read a sci-fi book for a science book report and I didn't know what kind of book to get. At the beginning of the book it is very confusing and even boring but once you get into this book it is so good. The ending is terrific and if I had the time I would read it 24 hours a day. I would recamend this book highly. I hope my review helped you!

          5 out of 5 stars Bizarre conversations.......2000-03-04

I came across this rather bizarre little author in a chat room, and felt the need to read one of her books at random - this one. I fear i was needlessly insulting to her during an argument I had with her, because now that I've read this mindless, awful drivel, I wonder if perhaps she wasn't being a little ironic about the general quality of sci - fi writing.

So a review of the book - If you are the sort of person who likes this sort of thing, you are the sort of person who likes this sort of thing.

And of the author - If you are the sort of person who writes this sort of thing, you are the sort of person who writes this thing.

Irredeemable, really, but five stars for trying.

                              Book Description

The fifth book in the tremendously successful "Zen Speaks" series of cartoon-illustrated adaptations of Chinese thought and philosophy by world-renowned author Tsai Chih Chung (100,000 copies in print), The Dao of Zhuangzi explores core portions of the Zhuangzi, one of the great Daoist texts. Together with the writings of Laozi, the Zhuangzi had an immense impact on Chinese culture that matched that of Confucianism. Over the centuries, this classical Daoism has influenced millions of readers and students of philosophy and literature throughout the world.

Tsai Chih Chung first tackled portions of the Zhuangzi in his first book published in the U.S., Zhuangzi Speaks, which sold 20,000 copies for Princeton--an astonishing number for a university press--and was the book that brought C.C. Tsai to the attention of American readers. In The Dao of Zhangzi, Tsai Chih Chung brings humorously to life new portions of the Dao--and extends the reach of his early efforts in profound and entertaining ways.

As with the previous works, the book will include an introduction by a scholar that will help to place Daoism and the Zhuangzi in historical and cultural context.

5 out of 5 stars Fun intro to a Taoist Masterpiece.......2003-10-15

I have became interested in this book after reading "The Tao Speaks" by the same author. Previously, I have read the Tao Te Ching years ago, and found it a mostly unintelligible and illogical document. For years I have given up on trying to understand anything because it made little sense. That is, until I met this wonderful cartoon series by Zhizhong Cai. Here I found even some of the most complicated and esoteric principles of Taoism explained using brilliant flowing art and very simple examples from ordinary experience. The Zhuangzi is the perhaps lesser known of the two masterpieces of Taoist literature. I actually like it more than the Tao Te Ching. [Zhuangzi is the one who dreamed about a butterfly, and woke up wondering whether he's really Zhuangzi who dreamed of a butterfly, or whether he's really a butterfly who's now dreaming he's Zhuangzi]. I find the cartoon panels very illuminating and hilariously funny at the same time. It makes the principles of Zhuangzi much more lucid and vivid, and easier to remember and understand.

This book is a little bigger than the Dao speaks, containing almost 125 pages each having roughly 6 panels per page. The art is very beautiful and interesting. Further, the edition I have (which is square in shape) has a side panel in every page containing the text of the Zhuangzi in Chinese (reading top to bottom the traditional way). I found that very interesting and adds an artistic touch to the volume. It is also useful to me since I am currently learning Chinese. Note that (1) there are two books about Zhuangzi: this one and another called "The Zhuangzi Speaks", and that (2) there is an older edition of this series which omits this panel (so the book has a more rectangular aspect ratio). What I don't like is that they changes the titles of the books between the two series (used to be "The Sayings of Zhuangzi" Books 1 and 2). So once I bought Book 2 thinking it corresponds to the book I don't have ("The Zhuangzi Speaks"), and ended up with the same book I possess. So be careful. In any case it wasn't such a big mistake, as the price was right and I ended up giving the second book as a gift.

Most of the recipes call for only a few ingredients and very easy to make. One of the down side is that the author measures all ingredients in oz & gam, which are not always convenient. Steps are short and easy to understand, but sometimes the author called for an ingredient and then forgot to mention when to use it. For a short book, it covers many areas, from baking to drinks. Most of them turn out very nicely!!! Definitely a book worth checking out.

                                Book Description

The result of nearly two decades of intensive research by Norman Mack and his late wife, Beatrice Davidow Mack, Missouri’s Silver Age: Silversmiths of the 1800s is a comprehensive directory of nineteenth-century Missouri silversmiths, their works, and their identifying makers’ marks. Illustrated with over one hundred photographs, this exceptional reference for historians and silver collectors showcases the Macks’ three-hundred-piece collection of Missouri silver, which includes a representative sample by nearly every known Missouri silversmith and is housed at the Missouri Historical Society in St. Louis.

Featuring more than a hundred detailed biographies of the artisans and apprentices who created handmade silver in St. Louis and Missouri during the nineteenth century, Missouri’s Silver Age also contains extensive photographs of makers’ touchmarks and of the pieces themselves, which include bowls, dishes, spoons, and ladles, as well as other household utensils and decorative items. Arranged alphabetically, the biographies reveal all known details of the business activities and locations of the silversmiths. Collectively, the entries and the illustrations shed light on the growth of enterprise in Missouri, show the impact of the individual on the developing frontier economies of the Midwest, and reveal how the production, acquisition, and possession of material goods reflected the culture and values of Americans during the 1800s.

Mack provides a brief but thorough history of silversmithing in America for novice collectors and historians, detailing the various methods used in making silver and the range of styles that were popular, providing insight into the methods of training apprentices, and explaining the effects of mechanization on the trade. Augmenting this volume are an appendix by Jo Ann Griffin on how to care for old silver, a map of the silversmiths’ primary locations, and a helpful alphabetical appendix of the silversmiths that includes illustrations of their touchmarks.

On the whole I was very disappointed with this book, the designs are beautiful and the projects look easy but the book presentation is lacking.

Possibly to cut costs the publishers have 55 black and white pages with 8 colour pages in the middle. In those 8 colour pages there are 12 pictures that show 26 finished projects. I find that they are so small you can hardly see the detail in them.

Nevertheless, there are many useful ideas and lots of sketches accompanying the project write-ups. The instructions are also clear and easy to follow. The embroidery style is fine and delicate, using silk ribbons and threads, and is perfect for clothing and washable items as the embroidery is well secured and sits quite flat.

This book is a good book to buy if you want to add it to your collection, but not as a reference book.

When the first man entered the lodge it could not have been more than a few seconds after the firing of the fatal shot, for Michel was still standing, gun in hand, and his poor wife sighing forth the last few breathings of her sad and troubled life. She had kept her word, and met her death without one cry or expostulation! It might have been heard from far, that groan of horror and dismay which sprung spontaneous from the one first witnessing the ghastly scene, and then from the whole of the assembled Indians.
