Book Description

In Sapogonia, edited and revised for its Anchor publication, Ana Castillo confronts the complex issues of race and identity facing those of mixed heritage through the struggles of Máximo Madrigal, an expatriate of Sapogonia, the metaphorical homeleand of all mestizos. Subtly political, it demonstrates how warring blood within a single body resists any peaceful resolution.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Lyrical novel at its best.......2004-07-09

Sapogonia by Ana Castillo is a fantastical and romantic novel. It may take some readers a bit of time to get used to the style of the novel, but once you do, you will be taken on various trips between the lives of Pastora and Maximo Madrigal. The characters share their lives both together and separately to create a well-rounded story. There's also a bit of magical realism that hints of what's to come from Castillo as an author. While I wouldn't say this is one of her best works, I would highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in finding something new to read; especially if it was works from a Latina author.

This book would also make for a great edition to a literature class. I think the benefits of a knowledgeable teacher would really flesh out the themes of this novel.

5 out of 5 stars Seductive in More Ways than One!.......2004-03-16

Long before this country discovered "His-panic" literature there was Ana Castillo. Long before feminists understood that the Mexican/Chicana/Latina existed at all Ana Castillo was already writing the testament. Honestly, this has not been my favorite of her all her work but having come out with a small press originally its liabilities may not have been her fault. Nevertheless, it has withstood the test of time. I love Maximo, that man we Latinas love to hate and hate to love. As for Pastora, only a fool would see that she is meant to represent the macho's idea of woman. He creates her only to destroy her before she can destroy him. Seductive in more ways than one and way ahead of its time!

2 out of 5 stars SHALLOW PRETENDING TO BE DEEP.......2002-05-15

I've read Castillo's "So Far From God" and was so charmed by it that I couldn't wait to read "Sapogonia."

I had to double check myself and make sure that I, indeed, was reading the same author. "Sapogonia's" characters are so on-the-surface and stereotypical that even this gringa is waiting for more elucidation.

Castillo tries to be too angry, while not giving me characters that draw me into their inner anger. All the anger is on the exterior in this book...leaving one thirsty for something more satisfying. And, while there's nothing wrong with experimenting, this book lacks true ingenuity.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning and enthralling..exquisite writing...Bravo!.......1999-03-28

I read this exquisite achievement from Ana Castillo a while back ago, and it still permeates every pore in my body. This book illustrates the seduction between a beautiful pagan demi-goddess that is envisioned as Coatlique. A witch she is called by her desperate lover, Maximo through the soft lament of his guitar. This novel is an orgasmic documentation of an obsessive attraction of flesh and mind. Of Hero worship and loss.Ana Castillo creates Pastora as a strong sexual brilliant woman, who has enraptured Maximo. But Maximo can never have her.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......1999-03-20

A multi-viewpoint view on the areas of assimilation, violence, and gender relations. Castillo masterfully wavers from the masculine narrator Max (whom she writes from both the first and third person, sometimes switching in the middle of the narration) and Pastora, the woman with whom he is infatuated and cannot obtain. She also mixes fantasy, memory, and dreams to create a work that will stay with the reader long after the final page is read.

    4 out of 5 stars The Wescalator.......2004-12-25

You know what? Kyle has been the Green Lantern for ten years now. TEN YEARS!! In all that time, I never liked him. He always seemed like just some juvenile who doesn't take his job seriously. Y'know the kind I mean, they're the ones who don't wear their safety gloves or hardhats or whatever on the job. In the back of your mind you're thinking "one day, they're gunna hurt themselves, and they're gunna deserve it." I think a lot of Hal's fans felt that way about Kyle because they always seemed so different from each other.
However, if there's one thing nearly every writer has seen in Kyle Rayner since his ascension to superherodom, it's potential. That same kid without the safety gloves is the kid you know with the right motivation could really do a number here. I think Winick's the first writer who capitalized on that-- the idea of growing up a bit. Hal fans didn't like it 'cuz they said Dc was trying to write Hal again. Kyle fans didn't like it because they though it was out of character.
I disagree with both. I think Winick's run has shown the evolution of the boy into manhood in a way that was sorely needed.
Maybe it's just me, but I don't wanna read Peter Parker, Green Lantern. This is DC. I want to read about a hero. For the past ten years, Kyle Rayner has been acting like a kid with a new toy.
No disrespect to Ron Marz, who I think is quite a talented writer, but Winick is the first one who showed the world that this book isn't just about some punk who was given the most powerful weapon in the universe. It's about the Green Lantern, the big-shot who should be up there with the likes of Batman and Superman.
Marz wrote the necessary child-like character people needed to get past the stale feeling Jordan was starting to leave in our mouths. Winick wrote the hero he was meant to become.

5 out of 5 stars Adding new dimensions to Kyle Rayner.......2003-07-26

By far out of all the Green Lanterns Kyle's role is one of the most that is underplayed. People always hate the new guy; so he claims. But in this one he achieves far more greatly and his character shines through. He learns a new lesson about heroism and his powers. This one is about him becoming the power of the Ring. Oblivion has been siphoning his power from Parallax into Kyle, this is why Kyle has become more powerful (e.g. not having to recharge his ring). In this book he becomes the character Ion. He is omnipotent. That's all i'm going to tell you. This book is definitely a must read. So naturally i give it a 5.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars In a word: Heartstopping........2000-07-24

Johji Manabe takes comand of your mind, body, and soul with this epic tale. The first novel is terrifying and fun, as is the second. Somewhere around the third volume it becomes impossible to not find the next. When I finished volume 6, I proclaimed that Manabe had more guts than any writer I'd ever before encountered. When I finished volume 7, I was in tears. I preordered volume 8, checking its progress daily. I cried again reading that one, but finished the novel laughing. Not since Nausicaa have I been so moved by a graphic novel series. This is the kind of story that puts the "novel" in the phrase graphic novel. If you don't read this series, you are really missing out on something. This story single-handedly proves that Johji Manabe is one of the most brilliant writers to ever take up pen and ink.

5 out of 5 stars The best comic book I've ever read........1999-12-28

And believe me, I read a lot of them. Outlanders just has that magic to captivate and enthrall, not through the cliched methods of mutants and whatnot, but by turning the space opera genre on its ear. Nothing in Outlanders will turn out how you expect it. There will be times when you are laughing out loud on one page, and then crying your eyes out on the next. It toys with your emotions. You will find yourself falling in love with some of the characters, and absolutely hating others. But no matter what, you'll have to agree that Outlanders is storytelling at its best, and that Johji Manabe's epic masterpiece hasn't lost its appeal, even after more than ten years since its original publication. Additional hats off to Toren Smith for his magnificent translation job. Nowhere in the books did it seem as though the words were not English to begin with. Comparing the Studio Proteus/Dark Horse version to the Japanese version even shows some fun the translator and touch-up artists had with the manga...for example, in issue #1, the names "Dark Horse" and "Studio Proteus" are written out in katakana on building signs which are blank in the original Japanese version. The name "Hakusensha" also appears, but in English. Again, the sign it appears on was blank in the Japanese comic.

I cannot recommend this book enough (though you probably should be at least 18 before you start reading it, as there is some pretty graphic violence, adult situations, and stuff you just won't get if you're not an adult). Take my advice, Outlanders is everything you could ever hope for on the comic page, and more.

4 out of 5 stars You'll want to buy the rest after you read the first one........1999-08-29

Ah... a classic story of boy meets girl, girl is alien, girl's empire takes over world. Indeed. This is a truly cool comic series (not as cool as Caravan Kidd though...) and I HIGHLY reccomend picking it up.

4 out of 5 stars One of my favorite stories.......1999-05-05

This is really an enjoyable series. I found out about it when I first purchased the anime movie based on it. If you're an Outlanders fan, you've got to get it. I've heard that vol 6 is coming out in fall of '99, and that according to Toren Smith, there will be 8 vol's altogether.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding academic biography on the 19th century Sai Baba.......2007-02-18

This is a fascinating biography of a great saint of India who died around the time of World War I. Sai Baba of Shirdi is a different person than the similar-named contemporary Sai Baba who has generated controversy and whom reviewer Carolyn Wise objects to. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an academic or devotonal interest in the earlier Sai Baba.

4 out of 5 stars Great Scholarly work on the God Incarnate.......2000-03-07

Good scholarly work on the great saint and god incarnate Sri Sai Baba of Shirdi. This books dealt with the life and teachings of Sri Sai Baba of Shirdi from different angles - Hindu Mysticism, Dualism, Sufism, Chisti Brotherhoods etc. and provide great insights into the beliefs around the holy man. Considered as an incarnation in the Avadhuta tradition of Masters - Lord Dattatreya, Sri Sripada Srivallaba, Sri Narasimha Sarswathi, Sri Manik Prabhu Maharaj and Swami Samardha of Akkalkot, Sri Sai Baba of Shirdi is a living god for millions of Indians now who take care of their problems and show the path of deliverance from his holy tomb in Shirdi. Most of the literature available about the great Guru deals with devotional insights more and not many scholarly works had been taken up to describe him from different angles of religious and philosophical insights.

                Book Description

This book draws on geometric ideas from cultural activities from Subsaharan Africa, and demonstrates how they may be explored to develop mathematical reasoning from school level through to university standard. Paulus Gerdes provides a thoroughly illustrated and researched exploration of mathematical ideas, motifs and patterns. Many important mathematical points are brought to the fore, not via the formal ‘theorem-proof’ method, but in a more schematic and diagrammatic manner. African artifacts, oral traditions, sand drawing and other forms of artwork with a geometric basis, all provide mathematical ideas for discussion in this unique book. Mathematicians and teachers of mathematics at all levels will be fascinated, as will anybody with an interest in African cultures.

                  Description:
The robusticity of human long bone diaphyses can provide information about habitual behaviour among humans in the past. Mechanically relevant morphological variables include the strength of the diaphysis relative to body size, asymmetry between antimeres, diaphyseal shape, and sexual dimorphism in mechanical properties. This study compares the long bone robusticity of humeri, ulnae, femora and tibiae of Later Stone Age foragers from the forest and fynbos biomes of the southern African Cape region (n=65:32m,33f), dated primarily to between 8000 and 2000 BP. Ecological differences between these biomes dictate variation in the terrestrial resource base, although marine contributions to diet are significant throughout the Cape. Female robusticity remains relatively homogenous between the forest and fynbos biomes, and is characterized by relative symmetry in strength characteristics between paired upper limb elements with antero-posteriorly strengthened diaphyses. This morphology is consistent with shellfish harvesting and the use of digging sticks throughout the Later Stone Age in these regions. Male lower limb robusticity is consistently high in both biomes, suggesting that high levels of terrestrial mobility were characteristic of male subsistence strategies. The forest biome males have higher levels of bilateral asymmetry in upper-limb robusticity than males of the fynbos biome. This morphology may correspond with increased unilateral loading resulting from a higher frequency of use of spear projectiles relative to bows and arrows, and greater exploitation of medium to large sized bovids.

5 out of 5 stars A Subdued Yet Elegant Laurence.......2002-05-22

When I first obtained this book, I was expecting something flashy and opulent as Mr. Llewellyn-Bowen can be at times, and for which I admire his style greatly. But, he shows in simple ways how you can display even ordinary objects with great finesse and style.

By using the everyday items in your home or even everyday objects from outdoors he shows you how you can display them to the best advantage. Some of the ways include by color, texture, provenance, size and shape. He also shows how to use the maximum versus the minimum impact; symmetry versus asymmetry.

You can even display the items in your food pantry--if you have a mind to with this book.

I still wanted a little something showy with this book - something bright red with a little leopard print, but still I was very satisfied Laurence's book.

5 out of 5 stars A great mentor for graphic designers.......2007-06-16

If you're ever felt lost, started hating what you do, or ever thought about quitting the graphic design business altogether, then this book may help you to rethink and resurrect your career. Each chapter focuses on significant career issues that designers are often confronted with via examples of real life stories and meaningful advice.

                  5 out of 5 stars great inspiration!.......2006-06-05

I absolutely loved this book! It was a great insight into the lives of working graphic designers and the struggles they go thru to get to the top. I found a ton of inspirational quotes that can really be helpful when stuck in a slump. its a great book for any student designer or designer that justs want to hear what others of their craft think!

                  1 out of 5 stars Grossly mistitled..........2006-05-25

This book is not about "how to grow as a graphic designer." It is a group of career biographies of (mostly) graphic designers.

If you've ever picked up a free business magazine, you have read those self-serving articles about so-and-so or company X that has started small and conquered roadblocks to become a business success. The kind of article that reads as though the author has just copied most of the press release handed to them. This book is just one of these after another.

There were no tips, instructions, pointers or other form of guidance in the book, save for the headings of a list provided by a third party. Examples of those pearls of wisdom are "Keep your skills up" and "Don't get too comfortable" - with no valuable description of how one would go about doing so.

The book would still have value if the stories were especially inspirational, or showed how the subjects uniquely overcame obstacles, but it doesn't. It doesn't even show how at all.

I expected a book that would help me find artistic inspiration, show how, who, and why successful graphic artists are inspired and find their ideas, and maybe have some business tips for a fledgling artist. I would have settled for a readable book that was even marginally about "how to grow as a graphic designer." This book fails in both regards.

                  Book Description

Arranged in chronological order, these pieces add up to nothing less than a full-scale history of the greatest tour band in the history of rock. From Tom Wolfe's account of the Dead's first performance as the Grateful Dead (at an Acid Test in 1965), to Ralph Gleason's 1967 interview with the 24-year-old Jerry Garcia, to Mary Eisenhart's obituary of the beloved leader of the band, these selections include not only outstanding writing on the band itself, but also superb pieces on music and pop culture generally. Fans will be fascinated by the poetry, fiction, drawings, and rare and revealing photographs featured in the book, as well as the anthology's many interviews and profiles, interpretations of lyrics, and concert and record reviews. Still, The Grateful Dead was more than a band--it was a cultural phenomenon. For three decades it remained on one unending tour, followed everywhere by a small army of nomadic fans. This phenomenon is both analyzed and celebrated here, in such pieces as Ed McClanahan's groundbreaking article in Playboy in 1972, fan-magazine editor Blair Jackson's 1990 essay on the seriousness of the drug situation at Dead concerts, and Steve Silberman's insightful essays on the music and its fans.

Skip it, go buy a dicks picks, you'll feel better. I found this book in a remainder bin, ignored like a mother who doesnt talk to its baby, and the baby shrivels up and dies. Read this book and asked myself, how's your head? Yet another attempt to nurse the dead's legacy, by recycling lots of familiar stuff. Go to the library, get out the readers guide, and make yer own, you'll have a better time.

                  1 out of 5 stars yawn.......2003-02-23

another piece of psychophanthic dead-lit, I've read more interesting stuff. i wish someone would publish something thought provoking and intelligent on the dead, i feel ripped off having bought this book (I have to have everything you see). nothing new here, buy only if you have to have everything (like me)
                  Peace.

                  1 out of 5 stars Don't Bother.......2002-06-07

I'd already read a lot of this stuff, and the editor's text was annoying and pretentious (check out his website for more laughs...) Well, at least I borrowed it from a friend. Don't get me wrong - I love the Dead!

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece on the elusive band.......2001-02-27

This book is a nice edition for "a favorite book on the Dead." Prior writings on the band are generally tell-alls by former friends and insiders. However, this is just honest from the seat of the pants good writing by many insightful commentators from the earliest days to the final days. I saw the Dead perform 25 times between 1983-93; and after reading this book I felt that it answered alot of questions. The Dead have always been one of the most difficult bands to capture in words, so you won't be dissapointed in this entertaining and deadon book on the good 'ole Grateful Dead.

                  4 out of 5 stars A Fine Collection From Far-Flung Sources -Essential.......2000-09-06

This collection brings together some of the best writing about the Dead, and from some previously hard-to-find sources. Included here are fine pieces from noted Dead scholars Blair Jackson, David Gans, and Steve Silberman, but also served up are rare articles that many latter-day Deadheads have likely not had the pleasure of reading. Some are rare like Charlie Haas' wonderful profile of the band (almost worth the price of the book alone) originally published in the now-defucnt "New West" magazine, and Ed McClanahan's equally notable article that appeared in "Playboy" in the early 70's. Others are from masters like Ralph J. Gleason, whose work is wisely included. The editors have done a painstaking job of selecting and presenting the material, most of which was not readily available before. The prestige of the Oxford Universtiy Press is befitting of such an influential, quirky, and uniquely American institution, and editors David Dodd and Diana Spaulding have done them justice.
