Book Description
Winner of the 1980 English-Speaking Union Literary Award
The first novel in Farah's universally acclaimed Variations on the Theme of an African Dictatorship trilogy, Sweet and Sour Milk chronicles one man's search for the reasons behind his twin brother's violent death during the 1970s. The atmosphere of political tyranny and repression reduces our hero's quest to a passive and fatalistic level; his search for reasons and answers ultimately becomes a search for meaning. The often detective-story-like narrative of this novel thus moves on a primarily interior plane as "Farah takes us deep into territory he has charted and mapped and made uniquely his own" (Chinua Achebe).

L to the power of S ..........1998-11-19
Sweet and Sour Milk was published in 1979, four years after Somalian anglophone writer Nuruddin Farah was forced into exile by Siyad Barre's military regime. It is the first novel of the trilogy that also includes SARDINES and CLOSE SESAME. The overall title of the trilogy is "Variations on the Theme of an African dictatorship".
The novel is the story of two twins, Loyaan and Soyaan. Loyaan is a dentist and Soyaan occupies an official position in the country's military regime. At the beginning of the novel (in the Prologue), Soyaan dies mysteriously. Before hiccupping his last, he shouts his twin brother's name three times.
The whole novel is Loyaan's inquiry on his brother's death: who poisoned Soyaan? SWEET AND SOUR MILK is, in a way, a detective story with metaphysical and mythical undertones.
Among other things, Loyaan finds out that Soyaan was a member of a clandestine organization that aimed at overthrowing the regime. He also finds out about the fact that Soyaan had a two-year old son, Marco.
Loyaan is surrounded with supposedly friendly people, people who want to help, such as Doctor Ahmed-Wellie. Whom should he trust? Whom can he trust?
And what do his mother and sister (Qumman and Ladan) think? Why does his father, Keynaan, (a patriarch and a dictator in his own household) "breathe respectability" into Soyaan's name by saying in the national newspaper that Soyaan was a national hero and a fierce follower of the General's regime?
What does that mean? Why does Farah lead us through ambiguous pathways and seemingly clear-cut formulas? Why is there a poetical vignette at the head of each chapter and why do those vignettes sound like enigmatic allegories?
At the end of the novel, Beydan, Keynaan's second wife, dies giving birth to a child who is immediately named Soyaan by the brave and firm sister, Ladan. Is that a note of hope?
Well, read the novel and try to find answers to these questions, and to all the other enigmas that I have not mentioned.
A good book can be read five or six times in a row, from several angles and divergent points of view. Take my word for it, this in an EXCELLENT book!
Bibliography
Jacqueline Bardolph has written numerous articles on Nuruddin Farah. I can give you a complete list if you wish (my e-mail address is at the top of the page).

I have also written an extended essay devoted to the trilogy. It is called "A Study of Duality in Nuruddin Farah's Dictatorship Trilogy".

SEQUEL TO HUNGER LIKE FIRE.......2007-04-23
This is author Greg Stolze's second and the actual third of the novel line for VAMPIRE:THE REQUIEM. VAMPIRE is White Wolf's successful role-playing game where the characters, of course, vampires. The novelization is set in Chicago where the vampire prince Maxwell has maintained peace by forbidding the creation or destruction of vampires. His fellow vampires are considering forcing his hand to allow a night of indulgence. Other threads in this story include a vampire hunter's attempt to save a man who has been bitten, bishop Solomon Birch's attempt to save his position, and a vampire murder investigation.
While Greg Stolze is a good author and MARRIAGE OF VIRTUE AND VICIOUSNESS is a good story, I found it less compelling than the first. A HUNGER LIKE FIRE had a strongly focused narrative with interesting contrasts and parallels; there were 3 main characters (Bruise, Perspephone, and Solomon) at different stages in their unlife (brand new, inexperienced, and very experienced) all trying to survive the political games that help to pass the time. MARRIAGE had too much going on with too many people with varying amounts of centrality to the story. The night of indulgence did feel like a tease, being discussed throughout the book but then handled in a few paragraphs at the end. It read like an editor chopped out a chapter or two. Also, the setup for a sequel at the end was really blatant.
In summary, I enjoyed reading A MARRIAGE OF VIRTUE AND VICIOUSNESS but found some flaws toward the end. It doesn't seem unreasonable to like a work but wish that it could be better. Also, if you like A MARRIAGE OF VIRTUE AND VICIOUSNESS you might also want to read the previous two novels A HUNGER LIKE FIRE and BLOOD IN, BLOOD OUT. There is also THREE SHADES OF NIGHT which has the same story from a Vampire, Werewolf, and Mage point of view. You can also get the roleplaying game VAMPIRE:THE REQUIEM and supplement CHICAGO which contains the same characters as the novels.
The least interesting of the Vampire Requiem novels.......2007-01-27
This book is all foreplay. It spends entirely too much time leading up to the "Indulgence," a time when the prince of Chicago lifts his ban on killing other vampires and embracing. Reading this book is like watching CSPAN for vampires. It's all political intrigue and posturing, which is normal for a World of Darkness book and a Vampire book, but still... There's too much of it here without any action to balance it. There is simply VERY little action or substance to the novel. By substance, I mean, it's like a soap opera; not much happens. Even the few events that transpire at the end with Bishop Birch are not so surprising. I honestly found "Blood In, Blood Out" and "A Hunger Like Fire" to be far more interesting reads, and so was "Three Shades of Night," even though it was redundant in the retelling of the same story by three different parties.
The characters are not developed enough, either. There are too many of them, with no concentration on any of them, with the exception of Velvet (and the ending with her WAS surprising!). Most of the characters float in and out of the story too quickly. It would have been better to really focus on a few in more detail.
I think part of the problem with these novels is the entire setting of Vampire Requiem. It's a poor rehash of Vampire the Masquerade. It's too similar, keeping a few, but not enough, of the old things and adding things that just made it worse. There is no Sabbat, the vampire equivalent of a rabid pit bull that has broken his leash. They made it interesting. There was open war between them and the Camarilla. In Requiem, they are all part of one big masquerade, each competing orderly for power. The Carpathians are like a weaker version of the Anarchs of VtM. And the origins of the vampires makes them less interesting as with VtM. Being associated with the legend of Longinus (spelling?) makes the oldest of them less than 2000 years old. There are no methuselahs or antediluvians. There is no Cain legend. There are no "final nights," and it doesn't feel like Gehenna is right at the doorstep, all things with made VtM a better setting.
This is an average vampire book. It's not a waste of time to read. There are just better WofD books out there to read, including the 3 that I mentioned in this review.
Requiem Redeemed.......2006-02-09
Thank goodness for this book! This is a MUST for anyone who loved "Hunger" but had to drag their way through "Blood In, Blood Out." Referring to some of the events and characters in the first volume of the Requiem series, "Marriage" brings the reader out of the ghetto and back into Kindred society, which is becoming quite a dynamic animal indeed. I read the last 100 pages without putting it down, even making me late for work in the process. I can't wait for the next volume in the series.
All fans of the series will not be dissappointed. This volume redeems Chicago's Kindred.
It's solid........2005-09-20
This is the best of the Requiem novels. Though it focuses on a different aspect of the WoD, the political intrigue posed in this tale sets it apart.
Requiem series of novels recovers!.......2005-07-29
After Blood in and Blood out i was mortaly afraid of the next novels quality, but i shouldn't not have been. Marriage rivals Hunger for quality and flow of story line, and character development. we are brought back to the tale of solomn birch, who as we re-call was forced into partial slavery to the prince, but what other readers may not have realised, this seriously threatens his standing in the Sanctum. We also have our first view of a vampire hunter, and the way the character is handled is unexpected, and shapes up the new WOD nicely.

Book Description
Teenage sleuth Eddie Fields possesses the unique gift of being able to communicate with ghosts through computers. One foggy night along a seldom used road a mysterious cry for help launches him on a journey of intrigue and adventure. Is the mysterious message merely a prank by a classmate, or could it really be from a desperate spirit on the "other side?" Eddie suspects an old abandoned high school built upon an Indian burial ground may be haunted. But by whom? His investigation uncovers several untimely deaths connected with the school. As Eddie and Professor Harley Griggs, his mentor, search for answers, they discover evidence of a crime which could send shock waves through the small coastal town of St. Andrew. Is there really a ghost trapped in the "in-between place" seeking Eddie's help? Will Eddie and Harley be able to unravel the mystery holding the key to freedom? The answers await you inside . . . Haunted High.

Gilbert R. Lavoie, M.D., has studied the Shroud of Turin for more than 20 years. He brings together startling new scientific information that shows how the shroud points to the resurrection of Jesus. With foreword by Gary Habermas.
Customer Reviews:
This book took me an hour to read.......2001-06-15
Loved it and I thought the proofs were very compelling. I went in believing that the shroud was of Jesus of Nazareth and now I believe it even more strongly.
Read this book if you are a skeptic or true believer!!!
WOW.......2001-05-28
To be honest, I didn't even see the obvious points Dr. Lavoie points out when I have seen the shroud in the past. It's right there on the cloth. This is a very detailed analysis of how this man came to grips with the facts surrounding the shroud of Turin. This book is wonderfully written, totally insightful, and completely logical. Read this book. You will not be disappointed..
I highly recommended this to all my friends!.......2001-04-06
This is a great story. The author gives you all the facts so you can really make your own decision about the meaning of the Shroud.
The story is well told & it is hard not to see Dr. Lavoie's passion through the writing. It is actually very inspirational. I felt like I was with Dr. Lavoie step by step on a quest for answers about the Shroud. I gave this book to several friends and they really enjoyed it as well.
Thanks for writing such a great book Dr. Lavoie!
A Fantastic Book........2001-04-05
This book brings to light many unanswered questions about the origin of the Shroud of Turin and about the resurrection of Jesus. You will begin to ask yourself a lot of questions about yourself, your destiny, and your faith. It is good reading as well.
Will most certainly make you think.......2000-08-13
In spite of reviewer "bill hay's" criticism that this book doesn't live up to the X-Files "stringent" criteria for valid science (what?!), I personally found the book to be well worth the read and credible on all levels. Having worked in the fields of pathology and criminology for several years, I was struck with the integrity of the work presented here. I honestly don't know whether Jesus was raised from the dead. I didn't witness it. But if any pathologist was asked to testify as to the question based on the evidence objectively presented here, I can't see how they could deny it.
Sometimes the conclusions drawn by science are rational. But there are also times when the conclusions, as irrational as they may appear to be, are correct none-the-less. Read it for yourself.

Excellent for the Beginner.......2005-09-20
I found this little book to be quite an outstanding guide for the beginner. The book provides a general and overall understanding of celluloid and the "celluloid" era. By sheer coincidence, two of my celluloid clocks are pictured in this book. I definitely give the book a thumbs up!!!
A Useful Tool for the Beginning Collector.......2000-06-16
Shirely Dunn's guide to celluloid provides a useful history of the "Celluloid Era" of 1888 - 1920, including manufacturer's marks. She also includes color photos of a wide range of celluloid items, from clocks and toys, to manicure sets and advertising ware. Without an index, it is not very useful as a value guide.
A good book for beginners, but not too terrific if you want to identify & value a specific piece.

Well done router book........2007-01-05
I like this book alot.... Great graphics and explinations. I have built several of the 'jigs",router table and porjects....
To learn how to use a router is like trying to learn a musical instrument - much to learn but the results will pay off. This book really helped me..
Ken
The most useless book !!!.......2006-09-10
I must say that this is the most useless book on routing that there is. It's not even fit for an amateur.
I guess, all I have to do is take few high-resolution pictures of router bits and tools and write a few crappy lines describing their functions.
There should be a "0" star rating, 1 star is too good for this.
If you want to throw your cash away, then don't take my word for it.
All the basics and details of routing.......2006-03-16
This is a very comprehensive, accurate, and helpful book that is great for beginners, but also has enough for more experienced people.
Best of the Lot.......2004-08-27
I have many books on using routers, but I think this is the best. If you are beginner in regard to routers, this is the book to get. If you are experienced in the use of routers, you will still find much useful information. Many books on routers are usually just compendiums of jigs, and most repeat the same types of jigs as the other books. While this book also presents a number of useful jigs, jigs are not the focus. The emphasis is on actually using the router in many commonly encountered situations. Procedures are described in careful, step-by-step detail. There is a wealth of full color photos, and line drawings are clear and carefully labeled.
One review griped that supplies and materials used in jigs and projects covered by the book were hard to obtain in his local hardware store. That is likely to be the case in regard to the jigs presented in almost any router book. There are many reputable sources for these items on the internet, and it isn't at all realistic to expect them to be available locally except in large cities. There are no hard-to-find items required. It is true that one of the topics covered is the use of a vacuum system to clamp work to a table while routing. This is usually considered the best way to hold down work so that the router is unimpeded by clamps and other contrivances. The vacuum clamp is actually quite simple to make (the drawings and directions for the system are quite clear in this book - far more so than in other books I've seen) and the most exotic part of the system is a vacuum pump, easily purchased used off ebay for a fraction of the cost of a new pump.
There is much useful information about the basics in regard to buying routers, bits, and useful tools helpful in setting up your router and maintaining it. In fact, the book contains a lot of extremely useful basic information not found in other books. However, as mentioned before, there is much information helpful to the experienced router user as well. So many books leave the impression that the authors simply generated jigs and `helpful' fixtures just for their books, and careful study of the material in these books often shows possible flaws and complicated features that serve little purpose. Not so with this book. Ms. Reed has clearly used and refined the various jigs and fixtures in her book. The result cuts out the chaff and leaves us with truly top notch information.
Good Luck.......2004-01-11
As I beginner I was anxious to read and do everything in this book from front to back. She's obviously a skilled craftsperson and her jigs are well built and thought out. I however became discourged quickly with the complexity of them. I found that the materials she suggests for the projects are hard to find, ie, baltic birch plywood, acrylic over 1/4", HDPE plastic, veneer screws, and adhesive backed sandpaper. My local hardware stores and lumber yards did not have these materials. Wait until you see the vacuum clamping system she recommends! If you enjoy scavenger hunts this book is for you.
If you start by building "her" router table the jigs work better, but I already have a nice router table and don't care to make the invasive modifications she recommends when other plans and jigs are available elsewhere that adapt well to what I have.
Of couse if some of the jigs and parts are too difficult for you, you can find them prebuilt and available for a price at her own website!

Finding the roots of trademarks in heraldry, potter's marks, monograms, and other such ancient devices, this book traces the history of the corporate visual lexicon and produces a taxonomy of the commercial age. An alphabetical section covers motifs from animals to waves, with short definitions and analyses beautifully complemented by daringly cropped and crisply photographed images. Pictures of this quality and interest would steal the show in most volumes, but the text stands up well to the challenge of images that gain force because of the familiarity of their subjects (corporate trademarks), and the unusual sense that the book's context lends to them. Marks of Excellence is a worthwhile exploration at the modern language of ownership.

A great reference for history of logos........2005-09-30
This book is a great resource for the methods behind some of the most sucessful logos created. Even if you are not a "logo designer" this book is a good reference. The author gets extremely deep into the psychology and methods of successful logos. Although sometimes laborious - it provides great background.
How to build branding.......2005-08-21
If you want do develop a brand name, this is the right book. It presents an overall process on how to buid a branding.
One of the best logo design books EVER.......2002-04-29
This is a beatifully designed book that is very complete. There are hundreds of examples of good design, and enough text to satisfy those who need detailed explanations. Quite simply, I have seen nearly all the books available on logo design, and this one of the best I have ever seen.
Interesting Art Book.......2001-03-11
I basicly see this book as an art book. Enjoy the design of old and contemporary trademarks and their functions. The text though, is very technical - as in other areas of marketing, the science of trademarks and branding is overacademized for nothing.
A beautifully illustrated look at trademarks.......1997-07-14
Per Mollerup's Marks of Excellence is an interesting and beautifully illustrated look at trademarks. The most interesting part for me are the little anecdotes which occur here and there about particular trademarks. For example the Guinness harp is based on the O'Neill clan harp, when the Irish State was formed in 1922 they had to reverse the harp because Guinness owned the copyright.
The look and feel of the book is similar to any of the Graphis range. The book begins with a brief look at the precursors of trademarks such as heraldry, monograms and brands for animals and goods. It then examines the design process looking at the type of corporate identities that can be created and their application. The bulk of the book though is the taxonomy of trademarks breaking them down into classes, such as birds, botanical, buildings etc.
There is a brief look at the background to the trademark accompanied by the name of company which uses the trademark and the designers behind it.
Book Description
Many books on process mapping are oriented around a traditional manufacturing process control environment. The methodology and tools in this book are applicable to any company in any industry that is interested in developing a much more integrated, systems approach to management to dramatically improve their business. The author's previous book, From Quality to Business Excellence: A Systems Approach to Management, explains the philosophy behind this approach. This book provides the "how to" for achieving that level of visualization with a unique combination of theory and tools showing you how to implement enterprise process mapping in a way that will yield significant business value for your organization.
This book includes a free evaluation copy of Microsoft Visio and a free evaluation copy of the ProcessMaps tool for enterprise process mapping, as well as computer-based training on how to use these tools.
Benefits:
Comply with quality standards, such as ISO 9001:2000, and regulatory requirements, such as Sarbanes-Oxley.
Develop a unifying view of how an overall business works as a system.
Implement a very high impact, well-integrated and cross-functional systems approach to managing all aspects of the business.
Understand how all processes and tasks within the organization contribute to achieving the company's overall business goals.
Provide a foundation for a systematic and proactive approach to business process improvement that will result in real and tangible improvements in cost and effectiveness.
Customer Reviews:
A High Level Intro Book on Process Mapping.......2006-02-19
This book dose a good job on describing what is enterprise process mapping and how companies can benefit from mapping their processes. However, I think the discussion on how to conduct process mapping still remains at a pretty high level. The conversions used are not industry standard (I'd like to see a book using UML Activity Diagram 2.0) and the case studies presented are too sketchy (espaceally, the case about SOX compliance). It would be nice if the author can dedicate a chapter to a detailed case to show how to apply the introduced process mapping concepts and techniques. Overall, it is a neat book worth reading.
You have to buy the program.......2005-10-12
This is a book that does not explain how to map your process, if you want to do that you must have to buy the software and must have a Microsoft Visio License.
Just read Enterprise Process Mapping by Charles Cobb.......2005-03-01
This is an excellent book for those readers wishing to use process mapping to understand and improve business processes. The book is well organized and extremely informative. While it concentrates on the "how to" of process mapping it does so in the context of real business applications and is a natural successor to Charles's previous book From Quality to Business Excellence
