Book Description

Bartholomew Bandy has become an air ace. On the ground he causes disasters wherever he goes, but in the air he’s deadly, shooting down dozens of German planes in the course of thrilling aerial combats. To the amazement of all who know him he becomes Lieut. Col. Bandy and thanks to his new rank he meets all sorts of people, including his fiancee’s memorable family. As a handy (but disposable) war hero, he encounters a number of hair-raising adventures, not to mention English plumbing and an unforgettable honeymoon night. That’s Me In The Middle is exciting, full of military action in the trenches and in the air, and, as it continues to flirt with history, very funny.

5 out of 5 stars Three Cheers for Donald Jack.......2005-11-08

I found a British paperback edition of this book used in 1984. Since then I have sporadically searched for the rest of "The Bandy Papers" (including several searches of Amazon.com) without success.

I have to agree with the other reviewers here that it was absolutely hilarious. Although I can't remember much of the book specifically, I recall that it was full of absurd situations of the "Jeeves and Wooster" sort.

(BTW if you've been under the impression that P.G. Wodehouse wrote some kind of ponderous British literature, you have two surprises in store.) I can't understand why Jack has not enjoyed a much wider audience, and he's going straight to the top of my Christmas wish list.

"That's Me In The Middle"-Vol.2 of the hilarious Bandy papers will have you in stitches. Warning: Your wife probably will ban the reading of this one in bed- the chuckles and titters will drive your spouse nuts. The exploits of Bartholomew Bandy during WWI written by an author who understands human nature, military snafus and aviation. This series of books constitute the funniest fiction I've encountered in the english language. If you enjoy the short stories of Patrick McManus you'll love Donald Jack's novels!

5 out of 5 stars A hilarious read!.......2001-02-23

In 1980, I was travelling in Europe and saw "That's Me in the Middle" in a used book store in Copenhagen. I was attracted to it for two reasons--1) It had WWI aircraft on the cover and I like books on that period, and 2) It was in English...I picked it up without a second look.

When I left town on the train, I happened to be in the First Class car. As I settled down and began reading about Bart Bandy, I kept having to go out into the hallway to laugh out loud, so as not to irritate the various German businessmen and French society ladies with whom I shared the compartment. It was the funniest book I had ever read! After laughing for a while, wiping my eyes, and taking a deep breath or two, I would go back into the compartment, sit down, and start reading, only to have to burst out into the hall again in a few minutes.

Since that time, I have managed to find and read all of the Bandy Papers. They are all just as funny, and are true to the hilarious character of Bartholomew Bandy. Donald Jack writes a good historical novel, and creates such a group of idiosynchratic characters that we immediately recognize. Then, he weaves them all into situations that are just plain funny! I would recommend any of the Bandy Papers and, as this was the first I had read, it holds a special place for me.

Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars It's so absurd, it probably happened !.......1999-01-03

The second volume of the funniest canadian soldier in WW1. A dubious rise to headquarters results in the expected bedlam, and Bandy is sent back to the trenches. If you've read the first volume, don't miss it !!

I loved the anime so much that i just couldn't resist reading the manga to it and it was amazing. i couldn't put the book down. Theirs so much adventure and action you'll be hooked if you read this.

5 out of 5 stars TRAIN KEPT A ROLLIN.......2005-12-12

WOW. That's pretty much how I want to open the review of Volume 3 of the manga version of Chrono Crusade. I enjoyed the anime series to a certain point and then I felt it got caught up in its own religious jargon and apocalyptic battles between effeminate demons. I wasn't so hot on the manga but I was enjoying it more than the anime. Then I read this third volume and I was totally blown away!

Rosette, Chrono, and Azmaria are sent to the New York docks to investigate rumors of illegal demon smuggling. Yeah, that's right demon trafficking! The rapidly expanding NYC mobs are interesting in turning demons into foot soldiers. But they don't have a clue as to what they could unleash. Our heroes gain a new ally...or is it an enemy in the form of Satella Haveheit, "Hexen der Juwel", a millionaire heiress who is also a jewel summoner. She's a bounty hunter who is called in when the Order finds some situations beyond its capacity. Satella also happens to be looking for the hornless demon that killed her family, who just happens to match the description of Chrono! They will have to put their differences aside if they want any chance at destroying an ancient Egyptian mummy who bears a slight grudge for being disturbed from his rest.

This book was really the apex of manga writing and art. The warmth and excitement of it is beyond words. The characters are admirable and all too human. Rosette is a childish but devoted and loyal girl. Satella is a spoiled brat whose heart was emptied with the killing of her family. But she just might fill it with friendship. Chrono is wise beyond his looks, and Azmaria hides great strength beneath a clumsy exterior. Maybe that's the great thing about this book. The characters on the surface just don't seem to fill the bill for heroes. But they do have a lot of courage and sometimes that is enough. I loved the humor of this volume and it's a shame it was mostly erased from the later episodes of the anime. On the other hand, some of the scenes in the book are a lot bloodier than the show. So there is a bit more realism in the drama. The characters, even the demons, are a lot more sympathetic. I would recommend the manga over the anime any day. Read this!

5 out of 5 stars Turning the Tables.......2006-12-30

The Exile Kiss (1991) is the third SF novel in the Budayeen series, following A Fire in the Sun. In the previous volume, Marid confronted Reda Abu Adil with his wrong doings and Abu Adil offered up Umar Abdul-Qawy as his scapegoat. Marid also gained a token agreement regarding the Phoenix file. Friedlander Bey gave his permission for Indihar to move into the palace, but only if Marid married her and adopted her children.

In this novel, Marid is still adjusting to marriage with a woman who lives elsewhere in the palace and he is feeling awkward with the children. What does Marid know about being a father? His own father moved out of the household when he was only four years old.

Shortly after the marriage, Marid accompanies Friedlander Bey to the Amir's palace, allegedly for a party to celebrate Marid's wedding, but really to reconcile disagreements between Papa and Abu Adil. Strangely enough, Abu Adil gives Marid a commission in the Jaish, an unofficial right-wing militia. Marid and Papa leave early, shortly after midnight, but they are kidnapped on the Amir's grounds by Lieutenant Hajjar.

They are taken in Papa's own limousine to the shuttleport and deported by suborbital shuttle to Najran, the capital city of Asar. Enroute, they are tried and convicted for the murder of Khalid Maxwell, one of Hajjar's policemen. From the Najran shuttleport, they are taken in a military helicopter to the Empty Quarter and left on the sands.

A group of Bedouin meet them at the drop point and take them elsewhere across the desert. When the Bayt Tabiti camp for the night, Marid imposes on their hospitality to refill his canteens. After the Bedouins fall asleep, he and Papa sneak away into the sands.

After Papa tires, Marid snaps override daddies into his anterior connections, blanking out his bodily needs. Then he carries Papa much further through the desert. Finally, his own body gives out and everything fades away. His next memory is the face of an unknown Bedouin inspecting him and then giving him a shot of liquid Sonneine.

In this story, Marid and Papa have been found by the Bani Salim, who nurse them back to health and provide a guide to the nearest shuttleport. When they arrive back home, they sneak back into the city and arrange a meeting with the Amir. After learning of their covert arrest and exile, the Amir gives Marid and Papa thirty days to appeal their conviction. Of course, Lieutenant Hajjar does everything he can to sabotage their efforts to find the real killer.

Hajjar fails to keep Marid from ordering an autopsy of the murdered policeman. Then he fails to keep Marid from using the police data network. He even fails to kill Marid on the streets. He is getting thoroughly frustrated.

Marid learns much while with the Bani Salim. For one thing, he learns that too much thinking is ineffectual; he resolves to be more decisive. He also develops more compassion for, and consideration of, those outside his own circle of friends and acquaintances.

The reader probably wonders why Friedlander Bay doesn't just kill off Reda Abu Adil, his rival. When Marid asks Papa that question, he is told that the two had made an oath because of a woman. Although Abu Adil has violated that oath, Papa is determined to continue his own observance of the vow. One questions whether Papa is really waiting for Marid to ignore the oath and just ease their enemy into the afterworld.

This volume seems too short, but it is actually longer than the other two works in the series. Maybe it is the change of scenery, since so much of the novel takes place in the Arabian desert. The return to the city seems to fly by and the conclusion seem too abrupt, but it is probably the contrast of the fast moving city versus the slow paced desert. On the other hand, justice appears much simpler in the desert.

Highly recommended for Effinger fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of strange societies, murder mysteries, and cyberpunk.

This tale of survival in the desert focuses the imagination. One of the best books of the year

4 out of 5 stars fine futuristic tale .......2006-07-17

Marid Audran is an enforcer working for Friedlander Bey, one of the two most powerful people in Budayeen. As he thinks back how far he has come from his days as a street hustler in the ghetto, Marid enjoys the affluence his current job provides him especially his time with Honey Pilar.

However, a Judge accuses Audran and Bey of killing police officer Khalid Maxwell. An associate of Shaykh Reda Abu Adilp, the other most powerful man in Budayeen made the accusation backed with evidence. To save the state money and time, the two "convicted" criminals are exiled into the desert where they fortunately meet up and trek with the Bani Salim tribe who save their lives. The duo needs time to prove their innocence and triumphantly return to the city to confront their accusers.

This futuristic tale is the final reprint of a trilogy (see WHEN GRAVITY FAILS and FIRE IN THE SUN). Audran remains a strong protagonist as he relates the events of their exile and efforts to return home. However, the rivalry between Bey and Adilp heat up as both want to be the one and only power in the city. Though it behooves fans to read their previous two tales first to gain needed understanding of a Muslim country in which cyber-technology is imbued into the traditional culture, fans will enjoy this tale though it lacks much of the freshness of its predecessors.

4 out of 5 stars A good read.......2003-07-11

It is the third of a series. The first book, "When Gravity Fails," is out of print but can be found used. I recommend reading the books in sequence although they can be read seperately if there is no alternative.

4 out of 5 stars Adrift in the Desert.......2001-12-22

In this sequel to When Gravity Fails and A Fire in the Sun finds Marid Audran and his patron Friedlander Bey, framed for murder and sentenced to exile in Rub al-Khali in the Arabian Desert. As in real life, the Rub al-Khali ("The Empty Quarter") is a vast, uninhabited sand sea, from which no one emerges alive. The bulk of the book takes place there, as they are rescued by a tribe of Bedouin and undergo deep self-examination. The change of setting makes for a nice difference from the previous two books, and there's a bit more character development as well. As is to be expected, the duo make it back to Cairo to unmask the person who set them up and exact vengeance (rather like Stevenson's Kidnapped). Things work out a little too easily for them upon their return, but on the whole, it's another solid entry in the series.

3 out of 5 stars So right, yet so wrong..........2006-09-03

This is an interesting book and presents many interesting ideas about balancing our heavily patriarchal society (and church) with a sense of the divine feminine. The author makes an excellent and point-- one that is truly needed in today's world-- but his Christian theology is a bit off kilter. For instance, he makes it sound like Christians belive that Mary, mother of Jesus, was just some peasant woman God picked out of a random group of rif raf women. If the author knew his theology, he would know that Mary was actually a descendent of the line of David, you know former King and God's favored servant? But despite some of these glaring errors, this book brings an important message. I recommend it.

      5 out of 5 stars Exceptional.......2006-06-09

Comforting and inspiring, "Embracing Jesus and the Goddess" is one of the finest books on comparative religion ever written. Highly recommended for both Christians and Wiccans, as well as those who walk both paths and embrace both faiths.

Regarding one of the previous comments about abandoning what Christ said, I think that reviewer is confusing what some of Jesus' followers wrote and said instead of what Jesus himself said. I believe that reviewer needs to re-read the Gospels and pay close attention to the words of Jesus only.

If you walk a Christian/Wiccan path, this book is required. I found great peace in this book's pages...thank you Mr. McColman for your wise, healing words.

1 out of 5 stars A call for spiritual sanity indeed.......2005-08-28

The bigger the intellectual, the less truth you need in your words.

Sure you can believe in Jesus and the goddess, you just have to forget everything Jesus ever said. This is like believing in the political ideologies of Ghandi and favoring the military accomplishments of the Third Reich.

If you follow the ideas in this book, I can assure you that you do NOT believe in the Jesus of the Bible (remember, the real one?), but only a media image of a long haired man with a beard. One would hope you would take your faith more seriously than that.

5 out of 5 stars Helped bridge two religions.......2005-08-06

I follow a mostly Pagan Path. My husband follows a mostly Christian Path.

My husband bought this book in hopes of understanding me and bridging our two faiths. He loved the book. I then read it. This book opened up a whole new world to both of us. We are now working hard at bridging our two religions.

We celebrate Christmas together, and Yule. Easter and Ostara.

Our religious life was greatly enriched by reading this book. It brought us to a better understanding of eachother.

2 out of 5 stars A conclusion in search of evidence.......2003-03-10

If ever there were a reason to think that a clerical shingle does not make a scholar, this book is one. It is an attempt to reconcile a distorted paganism with a distorted Christianity and its predecessor, Judaism. The problem is, Professor McColman's personal, twisted version of Christianity leaves it barely recognizable; He completely side-steps the actual teachings of these mainstream religions.

The author's thesis seems to be that Elohim, the Jewish and Christian God, is a very macho and unfeminine deity, who needs a little estrogen in His life --that Western religion is incomplete and needs to be blended with a little matriarchal paganism-- sort of a bachelor deity in search of a wife.

In so postulating, he has completely ignores the opening chapters of the foundational document of Christianity. This is the Genesis account where God fashioned Adam "in His own image" and then made Eve from Adam's rib.

Anyone who reads this carefully should observe that Adam was in God's image while Eve and Adam were still one person. In other words, Adam originally possessed all the feminine attributes of Eve --which were attributes of God himself. Thus, Eve is also in God's image; She inherits and passes down God's feminine traits. Man and woman COLLECTIVELY reflect aspects of God's nature --both the forceful and the nurturing.

Admittedly, this is a scriptural reality that many Christians would do well to ponder. In the Psalms, David writes profusely of God's loving kindness and tender mercies. Jesus compares Himself to a mother hen when he weeps over the city of Jerusalem.

(Incidently, masculine terms for God in language are purely generic defaults, the way "man" at times refers to mankind. Use of "He", "Him" and "Father" in reference to God are matters of linguistic formality. They do NOT mean that the Hebrew God has a penis! Jesus asserts that God is spirit and thus does not possess gender in the sexual sense.)

Ignoring these and other other substantial evidence of feminine qualities in the godhead, the professor blunders forth, weaving his thesis. He selects for his pagan model, a female deity, Gaia, but completely disregards the great host of male deities in the pantheon of early civilization.

The author can't make his case without misrepresenting both paganism and Christianity. If there is any doubt left that the author cares little about the real teachings of Christianity, his attempt to refute the resurrection accounts as "sketchy" and "conflicting" should cement the idea, for as Paul the apostle made clear, without the resurrection, there is no Christianity.

I gave this book two stars because it is a good example of the kind of errant thinking that comes to people when they throw logic out the window, start with a conclusion and then seek out evidence that supports it, ignoring the rest.

The author thinks Christianity is misunderstood. I can agree heartily on that. It is certainly misunderstood by the author. Should modern Christianity put more emphasis on the feminine aspects of God --and on the Divine aspects of femininity? Yes, I personally think there is plenty of biblical basis for that idea. But this book doesn't make that case.

It is shocking that A Taste Of Chinatown is no longer in print. I have collected a bookshelf of Chinese cookbooks over the years, but the only one that I could not do without is Joie Warner's. This cookbook focuses on the American Chinatown, giving truly accurate but easy-to-follow preparations of the classic dishes that are part of the American experience of Chinese food. Although other cookbooks may offer a broader range of more authentic examples of true Chinese cuisine, no other book that I know captures the subtle differences in ratios, seasonings and methods that give the American Chinese restaurant its unique, memorable taste. If you love your local Chinese food (and you don't live in China), you can not go another day without this cookbook.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Chinese Cookbook.......1999-12-03

I bought A Taste of Chinatown at a used-book sale several years ago for the princely sum of 50 cents. Every time I use this book I tell my wife: "This is the best purchase I have ever made." I would say the same thing if I had paid 100 dollars for it. I own a number of other Chinese cookbooks and the results from the recipes in this book are so far superior to anything else in my collection that there is almost no comparison. Simply put, EVERY dish I have ever made from a recipe in this book has been absolutely delicious. I am an experienced an accomplished cook yet I can make that claim about none of the other 40 or so cookbooks that I own. The only place this book comes up short is in the number and variety of dishes. Please, Joie, give us another book like this!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely the BEST Chinese cookbook.......1999-03-18

Put away all your other Chinese cookbooks. These recipes are straightforward and consistently excellent, and the photos are gorgeous. Warner is on the mark when she recommends specific brands of ingredients. What a shame it's such a difficult book to find!

5 out of 5 stars If you love Chinese you need this book!.......1997-08-04

The receipes are very detailed and describe preperation in great detail. Most of the dishes have been americanized some by increasing the amount of meat and decreasing the vegetable amount. All dishes I have tried are excellent.

                    Book Description

The contemporary search for the feminine face of God is requiring a re-examination of the relationship of Christianity to the pagan world in which it came to birth. Stephen Benko approaches this study as both an historian and a Christian believer. Inquiring into extra-biblical sources of Marian piety, belief and doctrine, he proposes 'that there is a direct line, unbroken and clearly discernible, from the goddess-cults of the ancients to the reverence paid and eventually the cult accorded to the Virgin Mary.' Chapter by chapter he seeks to establish his conclusion that 'in Mariology the Christian genius preserved and transformed some of the best and noblest ideas that paganism developed. Rather than being a 'regression' into Paganism, Mariology is a progression toward a clearer and better understanding of the feminine aspect of the divine and the role of the female in the history of salvation.'

4 out of 5 stars An interesting and inspiring biography of a great lady.......1999-11-05

Frances E. Williams was an outstanding woman who never compromised her inherent rights as a Black female American, and if doors were closed against her, she kicked them down, paving the way for many who came after her. Frances was a force to be reckoned with in the entertainment industry as aptly related throughout the book. When other Black actors and actresses were not given their due, they only had to call Frances. She was not only active in the industry, but fought prejudice and discrimination wherever she could. A particular instance from the book was when,as Assistant Director on the film, Salt of the Earth, she was asked by some of the Mexican American cast members to intercede on their behalf. She did so unhesitatingly. She led a rich life counting among her many friends Paul Robeson, Langston Hughes, W.E.B. DuBois and Maya Angelou. One has only to read the Preface to the book, where the author attended the memorial to Frances Williams and note the outpouring of love from the famous and not so famous as they said their good-byes to this fantastic woman.
