              Book Description

1924. Anne Douglas Sedgwick (Mrs. Basil de Selincourt), expatriate American writer whose best-selling fiction observed European and American cultural differences. The Little French Girl was among her most popular works and begins: A clock struck eight, a loud yet distant clock. The strokes, Alix thought, seemed to glide downwards rather than to fall through the fog and tumult of the station, and, counting them as they emerged, they were so slow and heavy that they made her think of tawny drones pushing their way forth from among the thickets of hot thyme in the jardin potager at Montarel. Sitting straight in her corner of the Victoria waiting-room, the little French girl fixed her mind upon the picture thus evoked so that she should not feel too sharply the alarming meaning of the hour, and seemed again to watch the blunt, sagacious faces of the drones as they paused in sulky deliberation on the top of a spray before launching themselves into the sunlight. Meet the Menagerie--as hodge-podge a mix of other-worldly beings as anyone can imagine. But a sorcerer, a scientist, a sixteen-year-old demon, and the others all have one thing in common: a hunger for justice--no matter what the cost.

                      4 out of 5 stars Olympian-sized Adventure!!.......2005-09-03

This second novel in the Menagerie series was fantastic. I totally agree with the previous reviewer, however.
It had some very slow parts, but then finally seemed to kick into overdrive the last half of the novel.

I love the various characters that comprise the Menagerie. This novel, like the 1st one, was full of dark magicks, action, and cool monsters from straight out of a twisted myth.

Definately worth your time to read.

                      4 out of 5 stars A Most Worthy Sequel!!.......2005-09-02

Where the 1st Menagerie novel - The Nimble Man - started, this 2nd one carried on to give me a fine and most enjoyable and exciting read.

Now don't get me wrong, it had a few bumps along the way, about midway. Where this novel started out pretty good and interesting, it all the sudden took a nose dive about a 1/3 of the way in, and I almost put it down without finishing it. A few times.

But then, all of the sudden, the monotony that the 1st reviewer mentioned wore off, and it was like one of the writers - most likely Christopher Golden - took over and gave it that extra and much needed UMPH! (Sorry, Mr. Sniegoski if I am wrong.)

The last half of the book is filled with Olypian-sized action/adventure, with very creative settings and action-filled scenes that never let up. I liked the twist and turns of this novel, too. There were some cool surprises mixed in with all the bloody mayhem. The creatures of Olympus here were written very well, giving it a much needed overhaul that fit this dark fantasy a living, breathing world, (or Underworld, I should say!), that breathed new life into magnificent old myths and legends.

I enjoyed it immensely. And you should, too. Just read through the ho-hum parts, and the real meat and potatoes of the story unfold like a runaway locomotive. Truly exciting.

5 out of 5 stars Trial and "Furies".......2005-08-22

Tears of the Furies, the second in the dark fantasy series THE MENAGERIE, does not disappoint. Once again, Golden and Sniegoski have conspired to create an action-packed story that weaves classic mythology together with intrigue and suspense.

The characters introduced in the first book, The Nimble Man, are all present and accounted for. This is a strong sophomore release, because character development is key. The relationship between Doyle and Ceridwen continues to strengthen and distract them both. Danny is also in the forefront; being a teenager and a changeling, he and his mother must deal with his physical changes as well as his emotional outbursts. Readers also learn more about the past of the stalwart Dr. Leonard Graves.

The cast is intelligent as well as witty. One-liners by hobgoblin Squire never fail to amuse. His obsession for Skittles is also revealed. Eve, the fallen vampire, still dresses in designer clothes when she's going into battle.

Tears of the Furies dives head-first into Greek mythology. Not only will readers cross paths with the vindictive Furies, but with Orpheus, the Ferryman, even Cyclops. Medusa is at the core of the story. The Gorgon is a vengeful ex-beauty, and the team tracks her as she turns a multitude of people into stone. Persons from Doyle's past come into play, opening up another can of worms.

I look forward to the next book in The Menagerie series, because the first two installations were page-turners which kept me engrossed from start to finish. I am eager to see what the authors come up with next.

3 out of 5 stars Never Pay The Ferryman.......2005-06-09

This should have been an easily available book, but for some reason it took forever to track it down. As a result I remember nothing about the previous volume of this series, although I must have liked it enough to chase after it. Golden is a long standing writer of popular horror and occult, having made his name writing Buffy stories. Sniegoski is another graduate of the Buffy school of creativity, best known for his comic work. The two have joined to create a new series about an eclectic team of occult guardians - The Menagerie.

Head of the group is Arthur Conan Doyle who is reveals to be a great magician gifted with a very long life, among other things. His team includes Squire - the worlds crudest hobgoblin and Eve - fashion junkie, vampire, and mother of us all. Then there's Clay - the universe's oldest shape-changer, Graves - ghost of a gentleman adventurer, and Danny - teenager on the way to being a demon. And finally, there is Ceridwen - Doyle's Faerie ex-lover. Quite a motley crew.

What they do is kill monsters while preparing for the battle at the end of the world. In this episode Nigel Gull, Doyle's fellow sturdent and old enemy, tricks Doyle into going after the Medusa. She has been brought back to life by Gull because he believes that only someone as ugly as the Medusa could love someone as ugly as him. Not very good logic, but Gull has a plan. On that involves having Doyle lay waste to almost all of Greek mythology.

That is why the book doesn't quite succeed. Every 25 pages or so another mythological monster trots on stage and gets wiped out. In between, slews of people are turned to stone. It gets repetitive. And the writers mess with that mythology as needed until things don't quite make sense. A six thousand year old vampire from Eden should have a better grasp of things Greek, And nobody should think that dress boots are the right attire for hell.

The dialog isn't wooden, but it doesn't flow all that smoothly either. Character development is also less than what is needed for such an unlikely group of heroes. So while this isn't a bad book, it never comes together for the reader. I'm going to keep following the series because I like both authors, but I hope they reign in some of the story line so that the characters become more believable and the plot becomes more than 'see monster, kill monster.'

This is a great pilot for a TV series that never made. Now novelized by D. C. Fontana.

Five countries pool resources to build a beyond the state of the art android. The main inventor Dr. Vaslovik is missing. Attempts to decipher his programming tapes destroyed part of them. Now the android (Questor) has to seek Vaslovik and find out why he was made.

This book works well as a stand alone story; However if you saw the pilot the images will still be there as you read.

5 out of 5 stars Just the Best!.......2001-06-21

One of those stories, like The Princess Bride or Good Omens, that moves into your brain and stays there. An all too human and fallible pair of heroes (even the one who isn't human), a noble villain, and a project that could change the world if any of the participants actually knew what in heck they were doing.

D.C. Fontana took the best bits (some unfilmable on a 1973 television budget) from several different drafts of the original script by Genes Roddenberry and Coon, restructured them, and added much coolness of her own. I read this when it was first published, and read it to this day, now in durable hardbound form. If you know the movie, the book is even better. If you don't know it, you don't need to - discover this unjustly neglected, highly accessible bit of SF treasure for yourself!

                        5 out of 5 stars Humanistic Drama.......2000-05-24

An excellent book with suspense, drama, action, and human interest. An unusual approach to truth, honesty, compassion, and true friendship. The journey that the main characters take to find themselves and where they fit in this world is conscious grabbing and thought provoking. I read this book in the late 70's for a report in Jr. high. I loved it then and now. I've just recently re-read it. It is a keeper! Definitely one to read and re-read over and over again. Few books and/or movies have that appeal. You won't grow tired of it!

if you are into conspiracies and such you will love this book. The theme of the story doesn't really revolve around the character, Questor, but the lesson that is learned at the end. READ THE BOOK! damn it's good.

                              Book Description

Debbie Blue approaches scripture like a farm wife handles a chicken, carefully but not delicately, thoroughly but not exactly cautiously. Debbie sees tangled questions about a God who gets a body. Though religion often abstracts, the story of Christ is the opposite. God becomes physical. God is made human in the womb of Mary and born through the birth canal.

                              5 out of 5 stars A Sermon Crafting Companion!.......2007-04-23

When I read (or listen to) Debbie Blue's sermons, I find that my own thoughts and ideas about biblical interpretation and sermon crafting begin to fire like never before. Blue's insights are original and relevant; still, there is an ever-present sense that she is tapping into an ancient and well-grounded stream of consciousness.
I read this book as a companion to Fred Craddock's Preaching, double-dutching Craddock's incredible insights into sermon-crafting methods and Blue's unbelievable application.
No matter how you preach, or whether you preach, Blue's insights into these biblical passages offer a richness far beyond most.

5 out of 5 stars Warning: This book may make you want to read the Bible.......2005-04-28

As a former Bible-thumper, I know that most Bible-thumpers don't read the Bible, or don't read it very carefully. If they did, they just might leave their right-wing churches and find another way.
Debbie Blue does read the Bible, and she brings a unique perspective to it, especially the Jesus parts. She's like someone who stumbled on it in a used bookstore and read it without all the cultural and religious baggage attached to it.
The result is colorful, funny, and thought-provoking. Everybody in the church talks about that "fully God and fully man" business, but almost nobody really makes Jesus seem human. Debbie Blue is fully human herself: irreverant, obsessive, a little bit crazy. That allows her to see Jesus' humanity in a new way.
This book will change the way you see the Bible, and possibly the Christian faith. If you have any interst in such matters, read it.

                              5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Fresh!.......2003-12-19

What a fantastic collection of fresh, creative, engaging sermons! Debbie has engaged many episodes from Jesus' life as well as a few parables and given them new life. She reminds us anew of how startling Jesus' life and ministry truly is. Occultists at the manger, the bloody mess of being born again, the gruesome sight of human beings being caught as fish, and the sexually charged and olfactory-overloaded foot-washing episode are some of the shocks that Debbie brings to our attention. The preface alone is worth the price of the book. Great book!

4 out of 5 stars Childhood memories in a book!.......2007-09-19

As a child of the 60's growing up in England, I was exposed to a lot of American popular culture and toys.
"Major Matt Mason" and "Zeroids" were some of my favourites. This book gives me an excellent reminder not only of what I had, but also stuff I never saw or even knew existed!
This book is well produced with magnificent colourful photos, but they are let down a little by the matte paper used for the pages that dulls their brilliance. Also, some images suffer from "the jaggies" caused by low resolution of the originals.
Likewise, the layout and text is often jumbled and there are some annoying factual errors.
Also, if the author had a rudimentary knowledge of 50's Hollywood monsters he would have recognised the inspiration for many of the Colorforms Outer Space Men.
Apart from these minor annoyances, this is the book I have been waiting for, for almost fourty years!
"Space Toys of the 60's" is worth every cent, even if only for the photos of the magnificent package and box art!
Those colourful boxes are always the first thing to be discarded by young hands too eager for adventure in space!

5 out of 5 stars The Mighty Zeroids.......2006-03-15

This oversized, full color paperback is not a glossy coffee table book. Neither is it a collector's price guide. Instead it's an impassioned and informative discussion of three collectible toy lines: Major Matt Mason (Mattell's Man in Space), Colorforms aliens and my favorite, Ideal's Mighty Zeroids.

I read and learned a lot about the other two toy lines, but I used this book when buying a Zintar Zeroid on E-Bay (for only thirty times the original price of $5, which shows how rare they are). Before that I read the book over and over, looking at the photos and dioramas from catalogs. Gillam even includes pre-release pictures from wholesale toy guides of what these toys might have looked like, as well as extensive photos of alternate versions.

Interest in Matt Mason has never flagged, and Zeroids are once again coming into their own in the world of retro toys (see the Zeroid movie link under Robot Links at alivingdog.com). They represented a high point in Ideal's Motorific line of cars and later boats and cleverly ran on the same replaceable motor. Anyone interested in these three lines, or the history of toys, or just taking a trip down memory lane will enjoy this inexpensive and captivating book.

3 out of 5 stars Good information, but very sloppy in it's image quality!.......2005-04-12

A Collector's Guide to Major Matt Mason, Mighty Zeroid Robots and Colorforms Outer Space Men. Veteran collector and author James Gillam details the story of toys inspired by NASA ventures into space.

SPACE TOYS OF THE 60's could have been the Major Matt Mason collector's dream come true. However, be warned that the quality of the paper and the image quality of the photos is not very good. I wish the publisher had done a much better job and creating some high quality images that I would want to look at over and over again. Looking at these pictures, as a substitute for expanding my collection, is not fullfilling.

All in all though, being the ONLY book out there right now with any information on Major Matt Mason, this is a pretty good book. At leaset it has photos of all of Mattel's Major Matt Mason - Man in Space figures, vehicles and buildings with detailed descriptions, construction and instruction sheets, product catalogs, collector's reminiscences, prototype information, and company histories.

If you can find a used copy for around $5 it's worth adding to the library as a reference.

I bought this book on ebay from the author and I am very happy with it. It is loaded with pictures of each space toy and has nice text. Some toys are shown in their original package. Best book I have bought in a long while.

...than this "Time Machine" that Mr. Gillam has produced. He left no stone unturned. Covered ALL details and variations very thoroughly. I discovered 3 OUTER SPACE MEN in my attic and a Scorpio in my basement. When I was looking for a reference guide to these 60's Spacemen, I coincidentally saw "SPACE TOYS OF THE 60's" on EBay. I said it, you'll say it: "That's how I would have done it!"

Motifs include a rocking horse, sleeping moon and stars, and a gleeful baby in a bathtub. --Amy Handy

I enjoyed making a baby quilt from this book and find Patrick's patterns and directions easy to do. I made a charity quilt in one day and it was a hit. It had a new home for a new baby within the week! I made it with scraps of red, white and navy, instead of the usual baby color pallett. Use your imagination. I also used patterns to create stuffed hearts for my Christmas tree!

This is, without a doubt, my favorite baby quilt book. These quilts are all so dynamic and creative. The colors are to die for and the fabrics are lucious. I have never been more proud than I have of the quilts I have made from this book. Need a bonus? Well, with all of these solids you SEE all the quilting. Everyone that has seen these quilts made up, say they are out-of-this-world!!! It's a *must have* for anyone who wants to make a very special quilt, for a very special baby.

This book has the most adorable baby quilts I have ever seen. I want to make every one. I may be a little biased because I love anything Patrick Lose does, but I know anyone would love these designs. They are colorful, cheerful, and bright. I made the Wish Upon a Star banner for my friends baby and she wanted to hang it in her living room it is so cute. I have started the I Love You This Much quilt for my neice's upcoming baby. The teddy bear with his arms open is just too cute. If you are looking for baby quilt ideas, this is your book.

3 out of 5 stars Ok minimal start on the subject.......1999-04-24

This is a very light book on designing repeat patterns. There is a four-page description of repeat pattern types and figures to show you what they look like. The best part of the book doesn't come until page 33, where the author really gets into how to create your own repeat pattern. Between these two sections of the book are eight pages of flower and butterfly motifs you can cut out and practice with. The one chapter is good but I wanted more! and some discussion of creating designs in multi-colors.

Don't pay any more than the $3.95 Amazon price for this one.

Cathay Che is obviously, first and foremost, a Blondie-and more specifically a Deborah Harry-fan who is also a New York scene writer of some accomplishment. She tells the Debbie Harry story about as well as anyone other than Deb herself could. I think it presents an accurate picture of an individual far more influential and musically significant than most people in America, including Deb herself, realize.

My disappointments with Che are few: she gives superfans and scenesters a great deal of space, rather than engaging individuals who really should be regarded as Harry's peers and colleagues. Che appears to have made no effort to have spoken with, say, Madonna, or Deb's 'Heavy' costar (and former MM roommate) Shelley Winters. (Che's assertion, in the book's first chapter,of the feelings "all men" have for the original blonde bombshell is also mildly offensive to me.)

Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney, and Pete Townshend have all publicly talked about Debbie and a paragraph from any of them would have been invaluable, as would commentary from, say, cinematographer Sam Shaw (who was still alive then and in NYC) or any of the other 'old schoolers' Harry interacted with in the '70s and '80s at the tail end of their careers.

Eventually, Harry has said, she will write herself of her own life, and that will probably be the definitive work on her. Until then, Che's book will stand the most significant book on Deborah Harry, and it has much to recommend it.
