Book Description
The few short stories collected in this volume portray old-world Russia with the motley composition of its society, the authentic minutiae of everyday life, and the complexity of human relations. A gallery of characters from all walks of life pass before our eyes: the petty bourgeoisie, merchants, priests, servants, minor officials, and the elite. Life's riddles intrigued the author, and he attempted to solve these riddles by giving the floor to his heroes and letting them tell their own story. In the "Enchanted Wanderer", in "The Make-up Artist" and many other of his stories, the author only starts the narrative and then let his heroes carry on with it. Each Leskov's characters has his own inimitable personality, his own face and voice, and tells everything about himself in an ingenuously natural way.
In "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk" (1865) we are taken into the world of a merchant-class family of that period with its crude moral of slavish obedience and its killing boredom. By a whim of fate, a passionate, impulsive woman, whose strength of character can be well likened to that of Shakespeare's Lady Macbeth, finds herself in this bleak world. This story suggests that is indeed a freakish world where the finest aspirations become so perverted, and people, who are full of strength and passionate vitality, come to such bad end.
"The Enchanted Wanderer" (1873), describes the life of Ivan Severyanovich Flyagin, a serf peasant, and his wanderings about the towns and villages of his native land.
"The Sentry" (1889) was written in an entirely different manner. The main character here is Postnikov, a private who has rescued a drowning man. He is one of those men with an obsessive responsiveness to the needs of others and a simple-hearted readiness for self-sacrifice.
`The Old Genius" (1884) is base in one such anecdote. With subtle irony the author tells the story of the rascally aristocrat who has to hide from this creditors and of the "old genius" who gets the better of a crook and recovers the poor old woman's modest savings.
The story of Lefty who had "shoed a flea" has long been a popular legend in Russia, and Lefty himself a symbol of brilliant craftsmanship. Till the end of his days Lefty remembers his homeland, and all he wants is to help his countrymen before he dies. But his wish is not come true.

The Enchanted Wanderer and Other Stories.......2001-06-09
If you want to understand a real Russian soul read this book. It may seem that Leskov is critical and negative about the Russian Orthodoxy but when you finish the book you'll see how great he is in upholding the principles of a true godliness.

HyperLinkz
By
Robert Elmer
The book I read was "HyperLinkz Digital Disaster", the first book in the series. The book was written by Robert Elmer. The main characters are Austin and Ashley Webster and their dog, Applet, who live in Normal, Illinois. Another main character is Ms. B she lives in current time.
At the beginning Austin finds an old camera. Then takes picture of his dog, Applet, and downloads it to the computer. Then applet disappears and Austin and Ashley try to find out where he has gone. When they cannot find Applet in present time, Austin takes a picture of Ashley and sends her through the computer to find their missing dog.
Ashley finds out applet was on a shipwreck computer webpage. While looking for Applet on the shipwreck site she meets Ms. B is an intranaut with a PDA, who is trying to change history by erasing past events. Wile Ashley and Applet try to find their way back home, they also work on stopping Ms. B from changing history. Read it and figure out the rest of the story.
If you like adventure this book is good for you. If I rated this book one through five, I would give it a five because it is very descriptive about the story. Another is it is interesting because it is about computers. I recommend this book.
Totally awesome!.......2004-08-08
This book speeds you from adventure to adventure as quickly as a click on a internet hyperlink. Ashley and Austin, sister and brother, chase their aunt's dog across cyberspace. Their encounters with the characters peopling the online sites are hilarious. There is a bit of learning in these encounters, but it doesn't hurt. It fact, you might not even notice the facts mixed in with the fun.
A parent and kid pleaser!.......2004-06-13
Digital Disaster, the 1st book in Robert Elmer's new "HyperLinkz" series, is sure to please kids and parents alike. When two kids, Austin and Ashley, find themselves as "internauts" zipping through hyper space, they are transported into the best history lesson available next to time travel - virtual historical reality. They learn about past shipwrecks, are thrown into the mystery of finding their way out of the internet, and get recruited into saving the world from a villainous woman who is attempting to blot out all Biblical truth from the internet. Kids will love the adventure, mystery, and modern techno style in which Robert presents this exciting voyage. Parents will appreciate the historical lessons taught with the emphasis on seeking and protecting absolute truth. Not a usual science fiction fan, I got caught up in the mystery and could not put this book down, until the cliff hanger at the end forced me to go and buy the next in the series, Fudge Factor!

slight correction to Goodwin review.......2005-03-12
"Deportee" has been recorded by lots of people but I believe it's a Woody Guthrie song.
A real eye-opener.......2003-02-06
Daniel Groody is a Holy Cross priest -- the order that runs Notre Dame. Assigned to work with Mexican immigrants in Southern California, he learned first-hand the realities of border crossing. I was reminded of the old Willie Nelson song about a planeload of "deportees" that crashed with little concern from the authorities.
Groody is not a sentimentalist and he tries to be even-handed. Although he registers appalling behavior on the part of the Border Patrol, he includes interviews with Border Patrol members in his research, and he acknowledges that there is a much larger picture: the relationship between the US and Mexico.
Groody focuses on the way individuals experience immigration. As I noted in my own book, Making the Big Move, identity change creates the greatest stress in any relocation. Here Groody talks about the way immigrants from Mexico also experience spiritual hunger as they seek to be united with a new community.
Perhaps the most vivid and memorable part of the book comes in the description of the four-day retreats, a program implemented by the clergy but designed by former participants who literally speak the language of the immigrants.
It is especially moving to read of the reaction of the "candidates," the new immigrants, as they are greeted enthusiastically by the staff and are served meals by the staff. Staff members apply for coveted positions -- and they actually pay $75 a week to work in the program.
Living eighty miles from the Mexican border, here in New Mexico, I've crossed checkpoints on the highways, often several hundred miles north of the border. Usually the guards just wave "Anglos" through and we rarely even stop. This book was a real eye-opener. At the end, I found myself wondering why we spend millions of dollars to keep out these people, instead of using the money to develop proactive programs here and in Mexico. Something is not working.
A remarkable book about the human spirit and grace.......2002-08-16
Daniel Groody saw first hand the continuing tragedy of illegal immigration and what happens to these people who risk their lives to find an opportunity to work. He describes a program in Southern California that treats the immigrants with respect and restores their dignity. The Church has its problems these days, but this is a story of the good that it fosters and a dramatic illustration of what religion can do in the lives of people. You will never look at the problem of immigration the same way again after reading this book.

Book Description
Luxurious linens, lovely old lace, charming chenille and cross-stitch, and timeless textiles: collectors who love beautiful antique fabrics and seamstresses who have classic clothing they'd like to repurpose will find inspiration in these 30 superb designs. There's something for everyone, including an exquisite christening gown adorned with lace, a denim jacket with a vintage fur collar, and a jaunty set of 1950's patterned café curtains. A blouse made from an elegant sheer curtain panel even has three variations; one is elegant and sophisticated, another features a cute strawberry print, and a third style showcases latticework from an old nightdress. Layout sketches for every article show clearly how each vintage textile, whether a doily or mid-century tablecloth, has undergone its transformation.
Customer Reviews:
Simply the best on the subject............2007-07-17
This book gives me such joy. As someone who has a long, long love affair with vintage linens and fabrics, I found this author and this book just what I was looking for to give me new ideas. The projects she shows us are,as one earlier reviewer stated, one would be proud to wear in public. I love children's clothing and especially love using the old patterns and the old linens etc. So many vintage fabrics have some damage to them and as such should be used for projects so that their beauty can continue to be enjoyed. It is a wonderful way to recycle and I want to thank this author for her beautiful work and for sharing it with the rest of us. This has motivated me in some many ways.
Patterns are out of print.......2007-05-25
The ideas in this book are inspiring, but the patterns used to make the garments are mostly out of print. I had not expected this since the publication date is just a few years ago. Overall I am disappointed because I cannot sew the same projects illustrated in the book.
Up-To-Date Fashions Using Vintage Fabrics.......2006-01-19
I love this book. It's a fabulous guide for laying out and designing new and interesting clothes, projects, etc. The book uses brand name patterns and simple illustrations to create up-to-date garments that don't cost a fortune. Arden shows you how to take any special piece of fabric, including vintage, and create a trendy skirt, shirt or jacket. If you enjoy using patterns by Vogue, Children's Place and other brands but could use suggestions about how to lay out the pattern and apply it to create unique fashions or home projects - get this book! If you are "afraid to cut" into grandmother's moth-eaten linens, the illustrations and photos will give you the courage and confidence to move forward. It's the best sewing book in my collection. I highly recommend it.
The Book's Title Says It All: "Fabulous".......2004-09-09
I loved this new book so much that I emailed the author, Arden Franklin, to praise her! As the owner of nearly every book that gives ideas about how to use vintage fabrics, this is clearly the best. The two things that set it apart from other books:
1. it actually shows clothing that you'd want to wear in public and home decor that is perfect for a cottage-style home; and 2. the perfectly drawn layouts are easy to follow. I'm always nervous about cutting into vintage linens/fabrics -- but no more! Arden's book has clear drawings to assist in "making the first cut" fearlessly. The photography is beautiful, and the projects are charming. Bravo! I highly recommend it!

Victoria Roses & Dreams.......2000-08-01
I highly recommend this book. As usual, the Victoria people present every thing in its best light. The photographs are so beautiful, that you feel drawn in. The charm of the book is insurmountable.
I always thought that any flower petals on tables needed to be cleaned up immediately. Somehow, in Victoria, what looks messy in my house is very chic in theirs. This is the essense of the book. It allows the reader to enter a simpler, more charming time. Most of us who have carted kids around, tried to keep our homes clean and still manage to work a full-time job yearn for this. It reminds us of our mothers or grandmothers and the stories they told us. It allows us to spend a few minutes enjoying a dream.

well detailed.......1999-06-24
well it was a very well detailed book and i recomend it full
not for beginners.......1998-12-13
This book has some good step by step instruction, but you must know the program to take advantage of these instructions. I also felt the book was somewhat misleading as far as the types of tutorials the author was going to present. The pictures and artwork are awesome, but the instructions only pertained to one element of the artwork. I thought more of how to create these images would have been in this book. Also, poor editing, as some of the instructions did not match the images. Although I felt a little cheated, I was able to put some of the information to use.
