This 567-page sampler of Clive Barker's darkly fantastic work has an unusual format. You'd expect a huge collection of his macabre short stories (like the three 1984 Books of Blood that made his name in horror), or perhaps an omnibus of the sinisterly exotic novels in which he moved from Grand Guignol to his own warped brand of epic fantasy. Instead, here's a book of bits: 70-odd passages from novels and plays, plus four complete stories and an introduction in which our author offers glimpses of what makes him tick. The Essential Clive Barker is thematically arranged in 13 sections, each with its own brief prologue: "Doorways," "Journeys," "Visions and Dreams," "Lives," and so on. Some of these fragments are powerful and evocative, some numinous, some horrid; many are teasers to make you wonder what comes next. Reading this is like sitting through a movie-length feature composed entirely of trailers flaunting pyrotechnic effects. It's a volume for dipping into rather than swallowing whole. There are fine things here, especially the complete stories--including "In the Hills, the Cities," an unforgettable mix of surreal horror and Balkan political allegory. But aficionados will already own the books containing these excerpts, while newcomers surely prefer to begin with a complete novel or collection. A perfect present for the Barker fan who has everything else. --David Langford, Amazon.co.uk

Book Description

"I wonder if the reverse is not also in some way true. That the artist is constantly working on anelaborate and fantasticated self-portrait, but at the end has drawn, unbeknownst, a picture of the world."
-- Clive Barker, "Private Legends: An Introduction"

Clive Barker, award-winning and New York Times bestselling author, playwright, artist, producer, director, screenwriter, and one of the world's master storytellers, writing in the haunting and moving traditions of Poe and Dickens, invites us to join him on a dazzling, wondrous journey through the worlds of his imagination and to experience visions, dreams, love, terror, heaven and hell, and revenge.

As we read, we discover and explore the dream-sea Quiddity and the islands of Ephemeris; the five Dominions of the Imajica, of which the Earth is but an imperfect facet; the rapturous world woven into an ancient, threadbare carpet in a derelict house in Liverpool; Hood's Holiday House where each day contains four seasons and children's wishes may come true; the Sky Room of Galilee, where the creation of the universe may be witnessed; and the clubs and bars of San Francisco and New York, in which all manner of sexual adventures lie in wait.

In these stories, the real and the miraculous are within a breath of one another, life gives way to death, and death to life; doorways open into other states of existence, and each doorway leads us back to our own dreams and fears.

The Essential Clive Barker is an irresistible narrative compendium that superbly represents the impressive quality and range of Barker's fiction, spanning more than twenty years of writing. It contains more than seventy excerpts from novels and plays and four full-length short stories, all personally selected by Barker, and offers a privileged insight into a remarkable writer and his art.

4 out of 5 stars A good resource for established Barker fans..........2004-07-28

I'll admit, I was pretty dissapointed at this book when I first cracked it open. It's a rather thick hardcover with excepts which mostly come from his novels, which I'd already read. "Why don't I just go read the novels?" I thought.

Clive himself gives us a good reason in his introduction. The idea isn't to read it straight through, it's to open the books and drift around to whatever catches your interest. In effect, it's the sort of book you read when you're not sure what to read.

And, to be honest, Clive Barker's writing lends itself particularly well to this format. His novels often drift off into self-contained vignettes, easily appreciated on their own.

New readers are better off getting either one of the full novels, or an actual short-story collection, but for someone who has read a sizeable chunk of Barker's work and simply wants to relax with some of the best passages from it, this book is perfect.

1 out of 5 stars Glam Trash.......2000-11-21

European imports Clive Barker & Neil Gaiman have spoken of their dislike of Tolkien in print, Barker whose initial fame has worn thin over the years mistakes political correctness for depth (like his fellow "special interest" fantasist Ursula Le Guin) that his literary themes will soon parallel theme parks in Disney Land just confirms the superficial nature of much of his writing. Gaiman billed as one of the top post-modern writers reveals the cut & paste method of character development and his works are ideally suited for video game developers and Quentin Tarrantino. Both are limited to the London rave scene and U.S. equivalents in their appeal. And both lack the numinous "extra literary" qualities of Tolkien & C.S. Lewis and their successors like Stephen R. Donaldson or even Stephen King.

i love clive barker, but he should stick to writing books and not just pick through his old books and put bits and pieces of them all in a book just to make a dime. if you want to read some of barkers works read the actual books! i am sorry to inform the other four dimwits who reviewed it but this book is not good at all. i had to force myself to read it it was so dull. and if you are wondering why i bought it, i didn't i recieved it as a gift and that is the only excuse i can think of for owning this book.

Nobody does urban fantasy better than Charles de Lint. He has a gift for creating engaging, fully realized characters, totally believable dialogue, and a feeling that magic is just around the corner.

Someplace to Be Flying is set in Newford, a town familiar to readers of de Lint. (He set two prior novels (Memory and Dream and Trader) and two anthologies (Dreams Underfoot and The Ivory and the Horn) in Newford.) One late night, as Hank drives his gypsy cab, his reliable though perilous city is transformed. He encounters the mythical "animal people," and the experience leaves him--and the reader--questioning accepted reality.

"Hank just wanted away from here. He'd sampled some hallucinogens when he was a kid and the feeling he had now was a lot like coming down from an acid high. Everything slightly askew, illogical things that somehow made sense, everything too sharp and clear when you looked at it but fading fast in your peripheral vision, blurred, like it didn't really exist." Fans of Emma Bull and Terri Windling (as both an editor and an author) will enjoy de Lint. He can make you believe "as many as six impossible things before breakfast." --Nona Vero

2 out of 5 stars Plotless.......2007-09-10

After buying this book on the recommendation of a bookstore owner, I read the first 5 pages with interest and delight. Although Lily seemed way overdressed to be going off looking for the animal people in a bad part of town, the opening scenes held enough promise to put that aside and move on. However, from that scene to about p100, the plot basically stopped as de Lint introduced character after character who basically did nothing except talk, introduce themselves, tell a story or two and talk to other people about tattoos, their parents, jazz, furniture, music, food and other interesting things. However, I wanted a story to permeate all this, and there was really nothing. A lot of description of people's histories, more furniture, more jazz, natural scenes, birds, houses etc. Lots of posturing, breaking of pool cues, talking, meandering, talking, meandering.

After four attempts to complete the novel, I put it down at p148, thoroughly disappointed. Lots of promise, no STORY.

I won't be reading any more de Lint.

This novel is Charles de Lint at his finest. This novel has it all-spiritualism, love, and...the crow girls.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books I've Ever Read!!!.......2006-03-03

I'm not sure what book some other reviewers read who posted less than favorable comments, but this book was easily one of the top 5 books I've ever read. Given that I have multiple large containers of books, you will understand that I've read quite a lot. With this book, I never wanted to set it down, but I started reading on a business trip and unfortunately work kept interfering with my reading! I did; however, recommend it to some of the people I was working with while only part way through the book. I was ready to read it again as soon as I finished! The characters De Lint develops are extremely engaging as is the storyline he pursues. As someone who is interested in Native American folklore, as well as mythology and folklore in general, the ideas presented in this book were very intriguing. I found this book genuine enough, and realistic enough, that I was ready to start looking for animal people around me. The story may have shifted to different viewpoints throughout, but I had no trouble keeping up and had no confusion as to view or place while reading. My only disappointment is that I do not believe that there are any additional books with these characters as I would love to read more about their lives and their adventures. As it is, I went out and bought 4 or 5 more De Lint books to read. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite.......2006-02-08

I've read this book so often that the cover is almost falling off. I've got passages underlined and used to have them memorized. This is by far the best Delint book out there. I love it.

The Crow Girls crack me up and at the same time frighten me. They can be sweet as pie and suddenly dangerous. I love how they like to smell the bacon rather than eat it. How they tried to steal a disco ball.

I also loved Coyote. he is always one of my favorite characters. Always trying to undo the things he's done. Always causing trouble.

It's captivating and beautiful. The end is interesting and sad and happy all at once. Read it. It's lovely.

5 out of 5 stars fine urban fantasy.......2005-07-27

In 1996 Newford, Canada cab driver Hank leaves his vehicle to stop a man beating up a woman in a nearby alley. The Good Samaritan takes a bullet in his shoulder for his efforts with the assailant apparently ready to kill him. Instead a girl comes off the roof and somehow kills the punk. She licks her fingers and touches Hank's wound with her moisturized fingers before running off. His shoulder immediately fully heals. Both Hank and the initial victim photojournalist Lily are stunned by the turn of events.

Hank and Lily have had their initial encounter with the immortal "First People," a hybrid human-animal mix. The two shocked humans soon meet other strange individuals like Jack and Kerry, who both differently shun the "normal" world. The humans soon join the hunt by members of the First People to find the object that created the world, "Raven's pot", for war is brewing and the winner is assured if they obtain possession of this magical artifact.

Newford fans of course will appreciate this fine urban fantasy, but so will anyone who enjoys a strong tale with intriguing characters regardless of whether they are human or out of mythos. Jack and Lily are fabulous opposites who come together in search of the First People and soon begin a quest to find the Raven's Pot so it does not get into wrong hands. Though allegedly targeting high school readers, Charles de Lint's latest tale is urban fantasy at is best that all genre fans will enjoy.

    Book Description

ALEXANDER THE GREAT. NAPOLEON. THE 47 RONIN. LONG DEAD, BUT THE FUTURE STILL RIDES ON THEIR SUCCESSES AT WAR!
First there was war, then there were wargames, growing more and more realistic until the games themselves surpassed war as mankind's most popular sport. But with no blood, guts, or glory, boredom began to set in and strategy lost its edge. Something was needed to bring fresh excitement to an old, old game. And so the past was mined for the greatest warriors and generals history had to offer: Napoleon, Alexander, the forty-seven Ronin, assassins from ancient Persia--all brilliant at either combat or at tactics and strategy.
It was just a game--until mock war turned real on an unimaginable scale, and only those legendary warriors could turn the tide...

2 out of 5 stars I should spend my time doing something more productive.......2000-11-25

Basically a piece of dreck. I should spend my time doing something more productive. These guys really exploit a niche, like good little bacteria. Forstchen wrote one of the greatest Sci-Fi books of the past few years with 'Rally Cry' - but then follows it up with something like this. I am shocked and dismayed.

5 out of 5 stars Great plot and battle descriptions.......2000-10-23

Gamester Wars was one of the best books I've ever read. William Forstchen gives accurate infromation about all of the characters: Alexander the Great, the 47 Ronin, Hassan and the Persian assassins, and Napoleon, and he desribes the battles and strategy perfectly. It is a trilogy and the only bad thing is in the first book, The Alexandrian Ring, it's hard to follow some races in looks and such, and the first chapter is kind of boring, but really important to the book's plot. This is a great book if you are looking for a good historical fiction story.

    4 out of 5 stars 'A-'.......1998-07-17

I must say, I am impressed. Forstchen has a peculiar ability to keep the reader *gripped* (in most of his books), and The Gamester Wars is no exception. Weaving a tale of the travesties of the super-rich and super-bored, Forstchen manages to highlight their childishness without going overboard. Which is one thing Forsthcen never does, is go overboard. As engaging as it is, The Gamester Wars never get into that realm of absolutely perfect and beautiful story; it's a fun read, and a good read, but it's not quite one of those books that everyone should have in his or her library. Even so, it's definitely worth the read.

5 out of 5 stars Confusing beginning, but a great story once you get into it.......1996-08-04

The Gamester Wars is actually a trilogy for those of you who don't know and was great. It takes a while to get the hang of the different characters and races at the beginning of Book 1. That was really the only bad thing about it though. I thought the idea of having the "rich" wager or realistic "war games" was a great concept. I found this book while simply strolling through the sci-fi section looking around. I wasn't a sci-fi buff then, but that book got me into it big time. If you have the time to read the entire trilogy, do so. I'm glad I picked it up and I think you should do so too.

Phillips did a good job writing what anyone could have done. Nevertheless, he is to be commended for introducing Robert L. Dabney to a larger audience. Given the rise of the internet, a continued interest in Confederate history, and the recent release of *Gods and Generals,* the theological side of the War Between the States is gaining an audience.

      II. Dabney on Politics
      III. Dabney on the Family
IV. Dabney on Feminism and Biblical-Manhood
      Appendix

      *Summation and Conclusion*
Dabney was not the most eloquent of the American theologians (although his writings are warm and moving), nor was he the best systematizer of doctrine, but superceding all competition, Dabney was the most prophetic of American theologians. Especially regarding education and politics, Dabney saw with chilling accuracy the rise of the Messianic State. Dabney's predictions have all come true. After the triumph of the North, we ceased to be a Republic and have now become an Empire.

Dabney is also to be studied simply because he lived one of the most exciting lives in the history of Christendom. It is sad that only two major biographies have been written of the man.

4 out of 5 stars Something for Me!.......2000-08-21

I have so many cookbooks that I was reluctant to add yet another to my collection. However, as a vegetarian who has added some fish and chicken to my diet (for a number of complicated reasons), I wanted some recipes that had these foods without just being a slab o' meat on a plate. I like this cookbook because it has many recipes that incorporate some meat, as well as interesting and tasty looking vegetarian dishes. Since my children are still vegetarian, it's great to be able to prepare a single meal with and without meat. The recipes are easy and straightforward, and the author offers helpful advice about substitutions. I made the lo mein (half with tofu, half with shrimp). Everyone in my family loved it. It was easy to prepare, and making the two versions was a snap. I was impressed by the number of yummy looking vegan recipes. I also liked the way the author divided the recipes into ethnic categories (American, Eastern European, Asian, etc). While some recipes are not gourmet fare (hot dog goulash or fried rice based on a Rice-a-Roni mix), most look simple and homey and some are definitely company fare. I thank Carol Gelles for simplifying making veggie and non-veggie meals at the same time. And I thank her for making them taste good.

                    Book Description

Introducing tile and stone into the home gives designers and homeowners an artistic medium like no other. Reclaimed, antique terra-cotta tile can transform a high-rise city kitchen into a French countryside retreat. Italian mosaic tiles hand-assembled in geometric borders and colorful murals can turn an ordinary bathroom into an oasis of luxury.

This book traces the latest designs using tile, stone, and mosaic. Through beautiful photography and illustrative text, installations for every room in the house-kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms, and more-are presented. Renowned designers and tile manufacturers from around the world share their exquisite creations.

In this high-tech world, tile, stone, and mosaics can fulfill our innate desire for tactile design. With these materials, we can create homes that are sensual places where the feel of cool stone beneath bare feet is as important as its deep, rich color or how the sunshine illuminates it.

For interior designers, homeowners, and apartment dwellers, this book is an essential guide to using tile and stone to decorate. It will surely inspire.
