In an ancient Mediterranean city, a tradition is maintained: every ten years an archaic game of human chess is staged, the players (visitors versus locals) bearing weapons. This archaic game, the central event of The Garden of the Departed Cats, may prove as fatal as the deadly attraction our narrator feels for the local man who is the Vizier, or Captain, of the home team. Their "romance" (which, though inconclusive, magnetizes our protagonist to accept the Vizier's challenge to play) provides the skeletal structure of this experimental novel. Each of their brief interactions works as a single chapter. And interleaved between their chapters are a dozen fable-like stories. The folk tale might concern a 13th-century herbal that identifies a kind of tulip, a "red salamander," which dooms anyone who eats it to never tell a lie ever again. Or the tale might be an ancient story of a terrible stoat-like creature that feeds for years on the body of whomever it sinks its claws into, like guilt. These strange fables work independently of the main narrative but, in curious and unpredictable ways, (and reminiscent of Primo Levi's The Periodic Table), they echo and double its chief themes: love, its recalcitrance, its cat-like finickiness, and its refusal to be rushed.

With many strata to mine, The Garden of the Departed Cats is a work of peculiar beauty and strangeness, the whole layered and shiny like a piece of mica.

I read this book about a year ago and since then I have been anxiously waiting for the next book in the series. I won't go into plot, but I will tell you this, the ending will force you to buy the next book in the series.

Very intriguing use of Magic and politics in this book. It's not "Game of Thrones", but its a quick and dirty read.

I am a huge fan of Robert Asprin's, ever since my Uncle handed down the Myth series books. I was excited to see a new series from him, and was drawn into the story. I do have to agree, though, with the "6 mini stories" in the book. I sometimes had to go back to figure out where that character left off... which got frustrating at times. However, I still enjoyed the story, and while the theme has been done before, the style of writing that the authors use makes it unique.

Nothing really new here!.......2005-01-10

This story is told through the eyes of six different characters. Each character gets their own chapter 1, chapter 2, etc.; and all five chapter 1's, 2's, etc. are presented in a row. (i.e. Bryck(1), Dardas(1), etc.) There are 30 chapters. The time period for all characters in each of their five individual chapters is essentially the same, so you are seeing some of the same events from a different perspective or place. The writing is interesting, as well as are some of the characters. However, because of the number of characters, what we essentially have are six short stories about six different people in the same time period. Its just not that interesting. In the end it comes down to; "Would I spend my money to read the next book in this series?" The answer in "No". The plot has been done before, "resurrection of bad guy, save the world from bad guy", and the writing is just not good enough to overcome this and the, "sequenced character chapters". If you want to read a good series try the "Belisarius" series by David Drake and Eric Flint.

Great start to a new series.......2004-11-16

The various city-states in the Isthmus have never known wholesale war but that is about to end. The ruler of Felk, Lord Motokin has planned for years to conquer the city- states and become Emperor of the Isthmus. He amassed a large army and trained in his own college a group of powerful wizards who would give that army instant transportation and communications. He places them under the command of a two hundred and fifty year old general remembered in the history books as Dardas the Butcher.

The city states of Windal, Callah and Sook fall immediately and the entire population of U'delph are killed, the city leveled to the ground. Although Dardas knows he needs periodic rejuvenation spells from a wizard under Motokin's command, the general is plotting to turn the magician's loyalty towards him. However, there are plans in the works from an assortment of people to stop this madness. One man is raising up a resistance in Callah while the leader of the powerful city-state Petgrad is trying to unite the city states so there's a chance they can win against the horde that is coming for them.

This story is told from the perspective of many individuals including a mercenary, a scholar, a collaborator, a resistance fighter and Dardas. Once the reader adjusts to the changing points of view, the transitions between these various viewpoints are smooth and makes for a fascinating reading experience. With the exception of the collaborator and the general who are deliberately made despicable, the audience will like the other characters and feel close to them. That Robert Asprin and Eric Del Carlo can accomplish such a feat is a testament to their tremendous talent.

Prolific SF writer Alan Dean Foster wraps up the adventures of the stranded Ethan Fortune and Suka September on the ice planet of Tran-ky-ky in a nice little package for fans of the series. Turns out the thawing of the ice at the equator Ethan saw in the second book (Mission to Moulkin) was not natural at all, someone is actually attempting to thaw out the planet. That could mean possible extinction for the Tran, which is unexceptable to Fortune and September. They and their Tran friends head out on the Slanderscree to see that the process is stopped, permanently. A wonderful ending to a wonderful series, highly recommended.

The finale of the Icerigger series........2001-09-18

The finale of the Icerigger series does not have quite the adventure of the other two and harbors a pretty silly villain and plot. None-the-less, anyone reading Icerigger and Mission to Moulokin will have to read Deluge Drivers, if only to spend the last few minutes available with our new friends the Tran. There is definitely something wonderful and personal about this series. The characters are very rich and you really want to know more about them and share in their adventures.

A great conclusion to a great adventure!.......1999-11-26

This was the final book in this trilogy, and I enjoyed it as much as the rest. It kept my interest through the whole series. Foster gripped me in the drama of the Ice world I came to admire in the first two books, only now the entire planet was now in serious danger. The ultimate global warming destroying the planet and miraculously being saved by rouge adventuring heroes kind of story. This series made me a Foster fan. If you enjoyed the Flinx series, you will really enjoy this one!

This was a terrific wrap up of the Icerigger series! The only sad part was it closed out one of the most exciting and original tales Foster has ever spun! As a SF fan it leaves you longing for more adventure tales on Tran-Ky-Ky! A wonderful and exciting book!

I was looking for a gift for a true western history buff. Many of the books out there sugarcoat the story of the West. This one is the best book I have seen on an amazing man. The details of the adventures along with the non-colorized photos are just excellent. For anyone interested in this section of American history, this book should be on your bookshelf. It's also a very good coffee table book. Highly recommended.

Cardboard and more instrument fun.......2004-06-03

Fun is what the book is about and Dennis Waring accomplished that and more in this easy to read attractive book. I thought some of the earlier instruments in the book lacked some in guidelines for fret placement and neck length, but later projects which are more advanced are more clear and concise. I had to reseach what a pentatonic scale was for instance. That's not such a bad thing when I think about. I also had trouble understanding his description of the southern Indian instrument called a veena. My research showed the instrument to have fixed frets not moveable frets like it's northern cousin the sitar. These are minor issues, the book is not intended to be a thesis on world instruments. For parents, educators, and just people who enjoy building things with easy to find materials, with a minimum of tools, this book will keep you busy for quite some time. Innovative usage of materials and a friendly appoarch to the subject matter will give the reader hours, if not more, of enjoyment. Why am I typing when I could be off to the local lumber yard finding just the right piece of wood for that Chinese moon guitar?

There is no option for me to give it 3.5 stars. I would really give it about 3.75 out of 5.

Waring has put out other books on making folk instruments, but they all seem to be updates of the same book. This one is different and has some really fun stuff in it.

Some of the projects are better suited to kindergarten activities than to a book on making musical instruments. I don't think a lot of the rubber band and shoebox zither, for example. On the other hand, there are plenty of fun ideas in here, too.

I like the section on complex instruments. The Irish harp is a really good design for a beginner's harp if your kids (or you) just want to play with the concepts of a harp. The cardboard fiddle is just plain fun. The spike fiddle (Chinese erhu) is also a cool thing to include.

I have only two major complaints about this book. First, there is almost no information about the guages of strings or tuning that Waring used on his. He says things like "experiment with different gauges of fishing line to find the sound you like best." This frustrates me a lot. How am I supposed to finish the instrument and play it if I have to spend all weekend stringing, unstringing, restringing and messing with it?

The second complaint is that there is next to no information on playing. This is the failing of most books on making simple musical instruments, but it still bugs me. I don't know how to play an erhu, so why would I bother making one with no clue what to do with it? Same for a lot of the other instruments in this book.

Okay, I really sound like I'm ripping the book, but I just want other folks to be warned about the failings. Overall, it is full of fun ideas. A friend who does daycare work thought it would be a great addition to the library at her workplace. I'm having fun with some of the ideas just for my personal goofing around. And if my kids thrash them, so what? Cardboard is cheap or even free.

INCOMPLETE Transcriptions.......2002-09-28

I bought this book from Amazon a month ago, and finally it arrived. Playing the tunes trascribed in the book, I found out that there are guitar parts and riffs that are totally OMITTED from the CD, so you have to figure them out by yourself by listening to it. I was very disappointed with it, unlike the HYSTERIA book they published that was very complete compared to this one. SHAME on the publishers and the transcriber that didn't take it out of circulation because it was incomplete. I would definitely NOT recommend to buy this book if you're an advanced guitar player, because this book seems like those versions of EASY Guitar.

Animal Instinct, the best book I've ever read!.......1998-03-20

Def Leppard fans, you must purchase this book! It is by far the greatest book on this planet. It tells the complete story of Def Leppard, from their early days in a Sheffield spoon factory up to their fourth album, Hysteria. Author David Fricke has done an incredible job writing this book. It is clearly written and very informative. The photos, courtesy of Ross Halfin, are amazing. Once you pick this book up, you will not want to put it down. Your Def Leppard collection is not complete without Animal Instinct!!!

By far, the best comprehensive book on Def Leppard! A must have for fans! I purchased the book approximately nine or ten years ago, and I love to look at it still!

Animal Instinct - The Best Rock Book Ever!.......1997-04-08

Animal Instinct is the best rock book I've ever read. It's filled with great photography courtesy of Ross Halfin, and the author, David Fricke of Rolling Stone Magazine, has done a superb writing job. Not only has he done exhaustive research, but he's injected the tragedy-ridden story of this band with healthy doses of good humor throughout. I've read this book over and over again, and it's still entertaining. The chapter on "The Terror Twins" (who are, of course, Steve Clark and Phil Collen) is absolutely hilarious. And Mr. Fricke's way with words in describing the birth of Def Leppard, the recording of Pyromania, Rick Allen's accident, the band's struggles to record Hysteria both with and without Mutt Lange, and everything in between, leaves you feeling as if you've lived through it along with them. There are other Def Leppard biographies, but there's not one to compare with Animal Instinct. If you're a Def Leppard fan and have not read this book, beg, borrow (but please don't steal my copy) or buy it for yourself. You must read it! And if you're not a Def Leppard fan, beware - once you read this book, you will be! - Laurie Compton

Piano parts/vocals/and guitar chords for 22 Def Leppard hits, including 'Hysteria,' 'Tonight,' 'Love Bites,' and 'Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad.' Who says you can't rock out on the piano! The arrangements are for late intermediate to early advanced pianists.

This book covers all the important events in the Leps career as well as how they were influence by other musicians. In essence it is a must have for anypne who wants to learn about music. I bought it because the Leps music is unique and so real.

I have the cd size of this book & I think it's great. Very informative & entertaining. Lots of great photos, chronology, & discography. Starts at the very beginning from when they practiced in an old spoon factory up til the release of the RetroActive album...world tours, Steve's passing, Vivian & Phil joining the band, Rick's accident, and many, many other interesting articles. This is their story about triumph over tradgedies. Very detailed & interesting. A superb book about one of rock's most inspiring & greatest bands ever.....Rock On Def Leppard!! : )
