A hard review to write.......2006-04-10
Actually, I would prefer to give this book 2.5 stars but the system will not let me. I was searching Amazon for some good "nice" mysteries when I saw this one and it seemed to ring a bell. Sure enough I had it on my "to read" shelf but buried way under lots of other books. I'm glad I decided to read it before ordering other titles by sisters Constance and Gwenyth Little. I really love a good mystery but this was not a satisfying read for me. I have other titles by these authors and now I don't know if I'm interested in reading them.
The story takes place on board a ship sailing between New Zealand and San Francisco. Our heroine is 25 years old and has been left money by her deceased parents to allow her to take a trip around the world when she reaches that age. All the story takes place during this portion of the voyage. Because we are only introduced to the first class passengers (and there are not very many of them) the scope of possible victims and suspects is very limited. Even so, I never saw the identity of the murderer until it was revealed and still don't think it was logical for this person to be guilty. My main reason for not liking the book is that I didn't like the heroine. She was (in my humble opinion) arrogant, selfish, foolish and had a deplorable tendency to scream and faint. Her character made me uncomfortable because I couldn't figure out what type person she was; fast and loose, pure as the driven snow, a boozing good time girl? The authors must have known but I didn't get enough clues to satisfy me. Also, since most people these days know at least some basic facts about forensics and crime investigation, it would have been totally impossible for these murders to have been committed in this way. I realize the book was written in 1938 but the implausible method really did get in the way of my enjoyment. I have to at least believe the crime COULD have been committed thusly in order to be interested in what I am reading. Just as a total aside, I was amazed at how often smoking and cigarettes played a part in the action. Between books and movies of this time in history it is no wonder everyone thought they had to smoke.
I would never recommend this book to a friend who really enjoys a good mystery of the classic or the "cozy" type. Why did no person with two eyes realize what was going on with the "grey mist"? Unsatisfactory!

Book Description
James Van Pelt's first collection, Strangers and Beggars, was voted one of the Best Books of 2003 by the American Library Association. Now, in this new collection, Van Pelt continues to explore the ever-changing boundaries of science fiction, fantasy and horror.
The Last of the O-Forms is an important collection filled with stories that transport us to far-flung worlds and to the harder-to-find inner worlds that define the human condition.

Another knockout for James Van Pelt.......2005-11-02
Having been one of VanP elt'S students, I may be a bit biased by his brilliance in the classroom, but I think that anyone wióuld agree that that brilliance shines forth in his writing. This is yet another remarkable collection of brilliantly conjured and meticulously crafted short stories that capture the imagination, thrill the dark side in us all, make us laugh out loud, and, at times, challenge our very perception of the mundanities with which we are daily presented. I would recommend this read for just about anyone in search of a fascinating read, as well as his previous collection, Strangers and Beggars.

Buzz Aldrin, one of manned space flight's pioneers, has helped create a stunning, possibly prophetic novel of the future of space exploration. A radio beacon from an unknown world leads an astronaut to disaster on the Moon -- and his son far beyond that as he searches for the key to the mystery of Tiber, a civilization who left artifacts in the solar system some 9,000 years ago, with sufficient impact on human affairs to explain some odd references in the Bible. The villains of the book are not the aliens, but the benighted politicians with the minds of accountants who won't fund the necessary scientific derring-do to save the world -- apparently an affliction which alien astronauts also have to bear.
You can read an exclusive interview with Buzz Aldrin written by Frank Braun.

One of the best SF novels I have read.......2007-09-10
Isaac Asimov has always been my favorite author, but Encounter with Tiber is the only book that I have read more than twice (4 times to date). About every other year or so, I will pick it up and read it again, and I have enjoyed it every time. I would love to see a sequel to this novel, and in fact, I am adding this review after searching the net to see any possible news/references to a sequel.
This book sould be turned into a movie........2006-08-19
This is a science fiction story that blends different stages of technical engineering developments around the character development of two civilizations, one from Earth. Plot discussion leverages off known existing technological challenges, solutions and observed facts. This becomes insightful and relevant to today's space efforts and developments. The book contains canonical hooks that could be evolved into many discussion issues around space technology, space law, planetary settlement (nation building), physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, metallurgy, everything. The credibility associated to the discussion by the experienced elder astronaut author takes the book out of the realm of the throwaway science fiction diatribe into discussable scientific trial balloons that warrant further discussion. This book should be turned into an epic movie.
One of the Best I've ever read.......2005-05-11
In my long and often fruitless search for decent sci-fi once in a while a gem is found. This is one of those cases. Also this book written in '96 predicted a 2nd shuttle accident which of course happened in Feb. 2003. The current science is very well researched and yet also leads us to see how future things may develop. The characters and the plot are very believable: characters and events are subject to wise decisions but also the flaws that exist in even the best people and governments have their part to play.
Not since the original writings of Asimov have I seen such decent and well planed out sci-fi writing.
Note to the 1st reviewer: B. Aldrin has a doctorate in astronautics from MIT. How can he be "in over his head" in writing a sci-fi book???
Interesting tale.......2004-07-29
People tend to love or hate this book I noticed, but personally I found it akin to Barnes's other novels which I have enjoyed, but simultaneously get annoyed by. Buzz's authorial voice is hard to pull apart from Barnes except where there's a lot of technical concepts flying around - definitely Buzz's material there. A curious omission that many have missed is its silence about the violation of conservation of momentum that the deccelerator loop on the Earth Starship causes - at no point do the authors note the large accelerations such a thing would cause. Also its flight-time seems to be based on non-relativistic calculations - these aren't major errors, but odd considering Buzz's meticulous details on other technical matters.
Thick novel of ideas..........2004-06-29
Buzz Aldrin and John Barnes wrote the long, but quite thought-provoking science fiction story "Encounter with Tiber". At almost 600 pages, it takes a reader at least a couple of days to trudge through the story, especially the early highly technical parts of the story. Aldrin essentially predicted commerical space travel, and from the news, we may not be far off from the scenerio that Aldrin and Barnes present here. The story is told through five different narrators with three humans at various points in the 2lst Century, and two "Tiberians" who came to Earth(or as they called it Setepos) in ancient times. Basically, the message is that science and space exploration takes time and commitment, but it's worth pursuing. The novel leaves the reader wanting more, as Clio(an astronaut traveling in the late 21st Century) discovers that her journey is just beginning. It leaves room for a sequel, which depending on your attitude towards the story is good or bad. I enjoyed this rich novel, and recommend this for anyone who really wants to know why we should try to go to Mars.

Book Description
Dr. Tim LaHaye, co-author of the Left Behind series, gives down-to-earth advice on seeking and staying in God's will as we make everyday and life-changing decisions.
Customer Reviews:
EXCELLENT!!!.......2003-09-09
Most non-fiction, how-to books are dry and difficult to stick with - but Lahaye's book on Finding God's will is outstanding! It is an easy read and holds the reader's attention with real-life examples from both Lahaye's life and others. This book is from the heart and gives clear direction on the Biblical steps to take to ensure you are following God's will for your life. Not only did I read this book, but my husband did as well, and it has transformed the way we look at life and the decisions we make. A must read for anyone who wants to make sure their decisions are Biblically based and in God's will!!
Good.........2003-08-05
Dr. LaHaye takes real life and applies scripture with this book. This is more of a personal testamony from five or so peaple.
Unhelpful and mediocre book on decision making.......2002-04-04
Making decisions. How do we do it? All Christians want to make right, God-pleasing choices, but there is often confusion about how to accomplish it. Tim LaHaye's "Finding the Will of God in a Crazy, Mixed-Up World" purports to give down-to-earth advice about decision making, but unfortunately LaHaye's work is based upon faulty premises and bad theology.
The decision making model LaHaye subscribes to is subjective and mystical. Since God has a specific will for our lives, it is up to us to find out what it is. To do this we must interpret signs, circumstances, "fleeces" and inward impressions. In effect, we are not so much making decisions as discovering the decisions God has already made for us and following through with them. If we do this, we remain in God's will. If we get it wrong, we are out of God's will and may or may not be able to get back in.
LaHaye's Dispensationalist presuppositions get in the way of sound Bible interpretation at times: he has a tendency to draw unnecessary distinctions. Taking a cue from Romans 12:2, for example, one chapter of the book claims God's will has three "levels": good, acceptable, and perfect. God's "perfect" will (often referred to as the "centre of God's will") is where we ought to strive to be; if we make a poor decision and get off-track, we might have to settle for God's "acceptable" will; finally, if we come completely off the rails we might be consigned to God's "good" will (or worse) for the rest of our lives. The chapter is full of examples of people who made bad choices that took them outside even God's "good" will resulting in their living out the remainder of their lives in despair. However, Paul is not speaking of "levels" of God's will, but attributes: God's will is morally "good," pleasing to him ("acceptable"), and lacking nothing ("perfect").
In fact, LaHaye admits a more serious weakness with the model: it is sometimes possible for someone else to put us permanently out of God's will through no fault of our own. Let's say, for example, that my God-intended spouse goes "out of God's will" and marries someone else. Since casual divorce is not an option for the Christian, I can now never accomplish God's perfect will for my life. But it gets worse. Not only I and my intended wife are out of God's will, but her husband, his intended spouse, whomever I marry instead and her intended spouse, and so on, and so on. It's an infinite regression. The proponents of the mystical model clearly have not thought the consequences through to their logical end.
Certainly some of LaHaye's counsel is good: he tells us to submit to the Word of God, pray constantly, and seek godly wisdom from others, to pay attention to our circumstances, and so forth. Certainly we should heed the wisdom of others, consider our circumstances, and use common sense when we are making decisions. Where he errs, however, is in saying that godly advice and circumstances are signs that we are able to read and discern God's will through. Jesus, on the other hand, said that we mortals are poorly equipped to read God's will through omens (Matthew 16:3). In fact, I suggest that attempting to find God's will through cirucumstantial signs comes dangerously close to the occult practice of augury or divination, which God forbids (Deuteronomy 18:10).
Another sign LaHaye endorses in the decision-making process is the "fleece" (see Judges 6:36-40): asking God to provide a providential sign to confirm that a choice is the right one. In doing so he shows how poorly he mishandles the Scriptures. Gideon did not lay out his fleece to determine God's direction. He already had a direct command from God's angel and a confirming miracle. He laid out not one, but two fleeces out of cowardice, doubt, and disobedience, and was still not convinced. Is Gideon really a role model for good decision making?
In another misapplication of Scripture, LaHaye cites Col. 3:15 to say we ought to let an inner peace indicate to us that we are in God's will, that is, "having a peace about" something is God telling us we made the right choice. However, read in context, this verse is saying that we ought to act in ways that promote peace in the Christian community. It is not saying, as LaHaye suggests, that if we make the right choice God will make us feel good.
The problem with books of this kind is that they simply do not promote spritual maturity, but a continued spiritual childishness in which we must continually ask God's permission for every single decision. It sets up a sort of "non-moral morality" in which we can make morally right or neutral choices, yet noneththeless earn God's displeasure for deciding wrong, and suffer the consequences. As an alternative, I recommend the book Decision Making and the Will of God by Garry Friesen. This excellent book provides the tools with which one can apply his God-given wisdom and the teaching of the Bible to all decisions, big and small.
Excellent examples or guidelines.......2002-01-13
This is a useful book to help you identify God's will for you in your life and even little decisions. The chapter titled eight road signs for decision making is an excellent guideline or example to apply to yourself to find God's will. I've tried it and it works. May the Lord bless you and keep you all.

A great reference book for trucks........2003-04-14
There are not many reference books on light-duty trucks out there, and this is an excellent one for someone researching a certain vehicle. It fits what I was looking for.
Most definitive Truck reference currently available........1999-04-29
While I found a few minor errors in some of the model information, I have to give this book a good review. All the makers are there including manufacturers that I had never heard of. There are hours of excellent browsing of the little guys as well as pages of excellent, and usable, information on the big names. My only major complaint with the book is that I am not happy with the paperback format. I would like a book that holds up a little better. Otherwise...Excellent reference work. And fun too!

Digging for dirt in old time Hollywood.......2005-10-16
This book surprised me in one peculiar respect. Except for the last chapter, I thought it was a better book when I finished reading it than I did while I was reading it. The reason was that I sensed a "holier than thou" attitude in the author in the early chapters and in the final chapter where, rather than simply telling his story, he seemed to pick and choose those whom he liked and disliked and then wrote disparagingly about the latter. With that one exception in the final chapter, he managed to somewhat stifle himself in the latter part of the book making for much better reading.
The best thing about this book is that it presents some interesting and apparently factual information about Hollywood and those who populated the film industry in its formative and midlife years. The worst things about the book, at least in my view, are: 1) too much time is spent delineating the achievements of relatively unknown characters seemingly to justify why they are included in the book; 2) the author's seeming condescension --- just tell the story; and 3) the author's obvious stretch in the book's final chapter in an obvious attempt to besmirch Ronald Reagan (This was uncalled for and completely out of context with regard to the rest of the book. I.e., who cares that some other actors didn't like Reagan or his politics, or what the author's opinion of Reagan might be?).
In summary: If you are interested in the history of Hollywood and recognize most of the following names, you will probably find this book to be of interest: Joseph P. Kennedy, Chester Morris, Elizabeth Short, Donald Berry, George Reeves, Peg Entwistle, Nick Adams, Alan Ladd, Margaret Sullavan, Ona Munson, and Clara Blandick. (Hints: bootlegger & unscrupulous theater chain owner (also father of a U.S. President), "Boston Blackie", the "Black Dahlia", "Red Ryder", TV's "Superman", Hollywood sign suicide, TV's "Rebel", "Shane", star of "The Shop Around the Corner" (prototype for "You've got Mail"), Rhett Butler's prostitute friend in "Gone With the Wind," and "Auntie Em".).
Caution: After reading this book you may conclude that the Hollywood stars of yesteryear were not the wholesome, brilliantly intellectual, morally straight, and down-to-Earth crowd we see today.
