Book Description
A luminescent debut novel following one woman's journey through love, loss, grief, and renewal
In her rambling Victorian house, surrounded by heirloom gardens and the gentle sounds of a river, fifty-two-year-old Kate Harding faces her second winter since the untimely death of her husband. In her living room are several hatboxes filled with letters recently brought by her sister from the attic of their grandparents' eighteenth-century Connecticut house. Kate remembers the sense of permanence and refuge that she felt in her grandparents' apple-scented world, as well as, more recently, with her husband. As she begins to read the hatbox letters, she discovers that what to a child seemed a serene and blissful marriage was in fact founded on a tragic event. As Kate's eyes clear to the truth of the past, a new tragedy unfolds, and her own house, filled with the shared detritus of marriage and motherhood, becomes the refuge where Kate can connect the strands of her unraveled life.

Fellow New Brunswicker loved this book!.......2005-03-15
Kate's feelings, her view of nature and the world around her were very real to me.
I felt her loss, her frustations and finally her coming to terms with the hand that she had been dealt.
Looking forward to another great novel by this author.
fabulous character study .......2005-02-27
On Canada's Atlantic shore, over a year has passed since her fifty something husband Tom suddenly died of a heart attack, Kate remains mourning and feeling all alone. Her adult children are long gone and having no Tom to age gracefully with. This makes for long days and longer nights. Only piano lessons during the day provide any relief from the solitude.
Her sister arrives with hatboxes filled with aging yellowing letters that she brought down from the attic of their grandparents' Shepton, Connecticut home. At first Kate ignores the boxes but finally begins to read the correspondence and is stunned. Apparently Grandfather Giles courted her grandmother's sister, who died from diphtheria in 1915. Kate learns more about her ancestors and begins seeing an old family friend Gregory Stiller, who just returned to the province following his son recently committing suicide. As Gregory pushes Kate to go out more, she misses Tom even more while on the other hand the letters make her feel nostalgic and remind her that her family will think lovingly of her and Tom.
THE HATBOX LETTERS is a fabulous character study that showcases a delightful protagonist still grieving the loss of her partner though one year has passed since he died. Kate is a fantastic individual, who makes the story line work as she slowly changes from constant loneliness to middle aged acceptance of the inevitability of life. Over time (and the course of the plot) she begins feeling better as her memories of her grandparents enhanced by the correspondence emphasize that nostalgia is good for cleansing the soul knowing that the next few generations will fondly remember you.

Forgotten Realms: Songs & Swords by Elaine Cunningham.......2006-04-12
I have the first 3 books and thoroughly enjoyed reading them.
I am looking forward to other books by this author in this series.
Arilyn Moonblade has won a place in my heart!.......2004-06-22
Definitely two of my all time favorites, Elfshadow and Elfsong, bring to life the story of Arilyn Moonblade, a half-elf Harper, and her adventures in the World of Faerun, as she tries to cope with her dual heritage and seeks to unlock the mysteries of her magical moonblade sword.
The books are so incredibly well written that the reader feels that they have been transported to the Forgotten Realms universe and are actually present among the characters, seeing what they see, feeling what they feel, sensing what they sense. Elaine Cunnigham has truly outdone herself and has presented us with a masterpiece of literature the likes of which we have seen only in JRR Tolkien's work, RA Salvatore's The Dark Elf and Icewind Dale trilogies and in authors Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman's Dragonlance Chronicles and Legends trilogies.
She has done a FANTASTIC job of both acquiring vast knowledge relevant to Faerun as well as presenting this material relating to the customs, the religion and the history of Toril, efficiently and successfully! Her solid grasp of factual detail makes her very capable of providing the necessary background needed to carry out the difficult task of writing Forgotten Realms novels, which is something often missing from the work of many Fantasy authors. Consequently, from the moment you pick up the books you have trouble putting them down and if that is not a clear sign of a fantastic writer/author who can come up with a great plot, I don't know what is!
Elves, spies, assassins, honor, bravery, magic, and swordfights are all about. Elfshadow and Elfsong make up for a great trilogy along with Silver Shadows and are a "must read" together with Evermeet, especially for all those who have a soft spot for everything Elven! In short, it's what Fantasy reading SHOULD be! One should seriously start thinking about turning these books into movies...
Ruined within ten pages.......2002-09-25
Again, Cunningham shows that she has an amazing talent for setting up a premise, and an equally distressing talent for ruining it with trite conventions, poor character development, and laughable dialogue.
This is giving nothing away, but this is an example of what I am talking about: In the first ten pages of the book, you have a great premise defined; the villian needs a magical artifact to wreak revenge. She makes a deal with a dragon for the artifact. In return, she gives the dragon a scroll with a riddle on it that outlines her entire plan, and how to defeat her.
Huh?!?
Is she a James Bond villian?
That has to be one of the stupidest things I have ever seen. Of course the heroes get the scroll, and spend the entire second half of the book solving it and ruining her plans.
And it really is a shame, because Cunningham does a great job of defining the world, showing politics in the Forgotten Realms, and creating motivations for the villians.
It could have been so much more. If you are under 13, and a D&D fan, pick this book up. If you want great fantasy, go read David Gemmell or George R.R. Martin.
Easily her best.......2002-07-01
This is the best of Cunningham's books. It has a fast-paced plot with a number of interesting elements, but escapes being too complicated, Cunningham's usual flaw. Danilo and Elaith Craulnober come to the fore with no Arilyn around to darken the tone. The ambiguous relationship between the noble Human and the self-centered, evil, yet oddly likeable elf helps drive the action forward, and the bickering between them provides some good comedy moments. The supporting characters are likewise fun, and are well-written to provide assistance or insight to the main characters at the appropriate moments. The villains of the piece are not unsympathetic either, as they have good reasons for their actions, and all of them find themselves caught up in circumstances beyond their control.
I'm still not certain why Garnet, the rebel bard and Harper, should have left the means of undoing her plan with the dragon - a misplaced sense of fair play, perhaps? It would have been nice to have more of an explanation into how the status of bards had declined and how their role in the Harpers changed, and why Garnet was so bitter about it. And the unravelling of her plot and the arrival of the dragon in Waterdeep seemed a little too melodramatic to me.
Yet those should not be taken as seriously detracting from this book. It's a fun read, well written and with some surprisingly poignant moments. A good example of what Cunningham is capable of at her best.
The Green Pimpernel?.......2001-12-31
I LOVED this book. I'm a big fan of the Scarlet Pimpernel and Zorro and now Danilo Thane. I love the way he plays the fop, but really gets down to business when he needs too. His relationshiip with his uncle Khelben Blackstaff is too funny. I also recomend Elfsong where you meet Danilo for the first time. He is absolutly hillarious.

Favorite book.......2006-10-01
This is a wonderful story. I first read it probably about 12 years ago, and loved it. The chapters are like poetry. Turner paints a very beautiful mental picture with her writing. Unfortunately, at 8 years old, I didn't know how to appreciate a book like this and ended up selling it a few years later (and after reading it about 30 times) to get some money. I had tried to find it for years, but it has become a rare book. Last Christmas, my husband bought me a copy, and I will treasure it forever. If you have this book, hold on to it. If you don't have it, get it if you can. It is the first book in a trilogy, but unfortunately, the other two books never got published. I am surprised to see the low prices on Amazon. My husband said he saw copies up to $200. Get it while the getting's good, because this book is a real treasure.
Wonderful and interesting. I couldn't put it down!.......1999-11-04
I read this book for a report, and I have to write a persuasive letter to a movie producer. I dont think it will be hard at all with this great book. It's different and I've never read a book quite like this. It's very descriptive, and I could picture everything. Read this book and you won't be dissapointed!

Greg Egan became the hottest new science-fiction author of the 1990s and won the Hugo and John W. Campbell Memorial awards by extrapolating cutting-edge quantum physics and consciousness theory to create rigorous and radical new visions of the posthuman future. Schild's Ladder affirms Mr. Egan's place, with Olaf Stapledon and Poul Anderson, among the giants of cosmic-scale SF.
In Schild's Ladder, humanity has transcended both death and Earth, and discovered its home world is nearly unique as a cradle of life. As it spreads throughout the galaxy, humanity enjoys an almost utopian existence--until a scientist accidentally creates an impenetrable, steadily expanding vacuum that devours star systems and threatens the entire universe with destruction.
Tchicaya is a Yielder, member of the faction that believes this "novo-vacuum" deserves study. The opposing Preservationists--among them Mariama, his first love--seek to save worlds and destroy the novo-vacuum. Discord heats to terrorist violence; then enmities and alliances are turned upside-down by a discovery that may mean the novo-vacuum is, instead, a new and very different universe--and one which may contain life. --Cynthia Ward
Book Description
Twenty thousand years into the future, an experiment in quantum physics has had a catastrophic result, creating an enormous, rapidly expanding vacuum that devours everything it comes in contact with.
Now humans must confront this deadly expansion. Tchicaya, aboard a starship trawling the border of the vacuum, has allied himself with the Yielders -- those determined to study the vacuum while allowing it to grow unchecked. But when his fiery first love, Mariama, reenters his life on the side of the Preservationists -- those working to halt and destroy the vacuum -- Tchicaya finds himself struggling with an inner turmoil he has known since childhood.
However, in the center of the vacuum, something is developing that neither Tchicaya and the Yielders nor Mariama and the Preservationists could ever have imagined possible: life.

Australian SF Reader.......2007-08-01
To quote some country singer or other "baby did a bad, bad, thing". This is bad in the Sister Alice bad sense of the word.
As in screw up, destroy large chunks of galaxies.
The posthumans here have awesome technological capabilities at their fingertips, the ability to back up, live outside bodies, and all that stuff, but they still have to relate to each other.
They also have to come up with a way to stop this much greater than minor problem they have.
This one is mind melter taggable.
The future of post humans!.......2006-06-06
Once you can learn in a sufficiently flexible manner- something humanity had achieved in the Bronze age - the only limits you really face are speed and storage; all other structural changes are just a matter of style. Or so according to Egan.
And there we go:
Enter a future world of non-flesh post humans, where all but a few deranged relics have their minds in quantum computer 'Qusps', with a flesh body as a peripheral that many forgo. And where death is regarded as only a minor annoyance. Gone are the sad old ancient Earthlings with their limited expectations. The ones who really expected no progress, no happiness, no success, no harmony. Gone are the ancient humans burdened by their limited lifespans.
Now we have immortal humans who populate the galaxy and travel vast distances disembodied.
Gone are ancient concepts like male and female. Who needs sexual dimorphism anyway?, If your mind is really running on a quantum computer ready to be transmitted to another starsystem?
And after all, if you want sex and death - surely even acorporals could try that out in some sort of simulation?
And then curiosity almost kills the cat. And how else than with a science experiment running amok. Creating a new vacuum. A new vacuum that begin to eat its way through the galaxy, destroying thousands of inhabited planets in its wake.
But not just any old, new vacuum. An intelligent vacuum that is a biosphere right down to the Planck scale. Intelligent. Begins to sound a lot like Hans Moravec's intelligent life on neutron stars doesn't it?
But better, with intelligence woven into the very space time fabric of the vacuum.
And again post humans must explore - and so goes the creator of this new universe (scientist Cass is the name of our heroine) inside to say hello to the beings she has created. A little difficult Egan admits - Such communication between different structures of mind, different nature of hardware and different laws of physics - but heck, where there is a will, there is a way.
And on and on.
Love it all the way! Surely it might not be loop quantum gravity precisely or even close. But never mind, surely there must be an Egan universe, somewhere out there in the multiverse! Not to have it would be shameful.

Not so hard to enjoy.......2005-11-12
I read Shild's ladder, and although I agree that understanding everything is beyond the grasp of most people (including myself), I enjoyed it quite a bit. I just skipped a bit on occasion. If you can enjoy looking through the journals "Science" and "Nature", even though you don't understand all the details, you could enjoy this.
Interesting, but only for specialists.......2005-06-15
Not great literature in the classic sense, but there's a lot of intriguing speculation here. The would-be reader should be warned, though: you will not fully appreciate this book unless you've made significant progress toward a degree in physics or a related field! (You could also get away with just reading a lot of pop science, provided you've read enough to be familiar with ideas like decoherence and superselection.) This truly is the hardest SF I've read.
Unlike a lot of hard SF, the characterization is actually more than perfunctory (at least in the main character's case), and the basic idea is very deep. The issues treated in this novel show a lot of philosophical as well as scientific depth. The story is not very gripping, since the future humans don't really face any life-or-death struggles, but I found myself interested enough to finish the book quickly. Recommended only for those with sufficient background.
Mind numbing ideas, characters suffer.........2005-02-23
Not much that I can add to the other reviews. Egan sure likes to twist reality around, and in this book, completely break it! Egans books are always a fun ride, even though you are bound to get a bit of motion sickness. A hint to readers, you dont need to actually UNDERSTAND everything he writes, just get a feel for what he means.
In far future novels like this, the changes in Humanity are bound to make it difficult for us to empathize and feel for the characters. For example, how sorry can you feel for a "person" who has a recent "back-up" of himself ready in case you "die"? Perhaps Egan is just TOO into the physics of things to really be able to "flesh out" his characters (an inside joke for those who have read Egan before). Another thing, this is the third book of his where human sexual dimorphism is dispensed with. The concept of male and female are pretty much done away with. But hey, its the future, and who knows what will happen, I simply think he is wrong here, and I think it hurts the characters in his books. In general, his characters are usually a bit on the thin side, but I still enjoy his books anyway.

The recipes are very easy and most of the ingredients I had on hand...except the chicken broth. Being a vegetarian for the last 9 years this is something I would never have in my kitchen. But I was able to substitute if for vegatable broth. I think the recipes are easy and tasty but the title is misleading.

Book Description
In this important book Tim Jeppesen investigates environmental regulation in a federal system and addresses the underlying question of whether regulation should be decided centrally, by EU institutions, or de-centrally, by individual member states. While simple economic reasoning presumes that transboundary externalities require central solutions and local externalities need local solutions, the author finds that the real answer is much more complicated.
Part of the problem is the fact that EU institutions are complex organizations and their rationale and decision making is not always in the interests of economic efficiency alone, but is often based upon other criteria. The author demonstrates this using the example of subsidiarity, a principal which directly affects the distribution of competencies between the EU and individual member states. Although subsidiarity is supposedly underpinned by economic efficiency, he finds that it is in fact, first and foremost, a political concept shaped by EU institutions. The author goes on to examine the balance between the costs and benefits of central and de-central environmental policies, and demonstrates how an environmental regulatory authority can be allocated most efficiently among federal and state governments.
Tim Jeppesen extends the basic theoretical issues to investigate the challenging problems which arise in the actual determination of policy measures in the context of the EU. This wide-ranging study of both the conceptual and practical dimensions of environmental regulation in a federal system will be welcomed by economists, political scientists, policymakers and students.

Book Description
"In the beginning people spent their days walking upright and their nights lying down. Eventually someone invented sitting. And chairs. Chairs evolved...and multiplied. A million years (give or take) pass. A boy named Rolf is born into a family in Basel that builds shops. Their neighbors make cheese and chocolate. 1953: Rolf's father, Wili Fehlbaum, goes to America and sees a chair that blows his mind. It is by Charles and Ray Eames."
Thus begins Chairman, a poetic and humorous true story about Swiss enterpreneur Rolf Fehlbaum and his internationally known furniture design company, Vitra. Acclaimed graphic designer Tibor Kalman's 600-page pictorial essay tells the story of chair design, from the invention of the chair to the success story of Vitra.
The company developed a strategy of fostering collaboration with top architects, including Philippe Starck, Frank Gehry, Tadao Ando, Alvaro Siza, Zaha Hadid, and, of course, Charles and Ray Eames; work by these designers appears alongside chairs designed by Marcel Breuer, Gerrit Rietveld, Le Corbusier, Josef Hoffmann, Eero Saarinen, Isamu Noguchi, and Mies van der Rohe. This whimsical book, loaded with color illustrations, will knock you off your seat!
Customer Reviews:
The quickest 585 page book you'll ever read..........1999-03-18
Tibor Kalman might just be qualified to have his face on Apple's new "Think Different" campaign. Without a doubt he does the unexpected...at the risk of little or no practicality. When I recieved this book in the mail some of my co-workers thought a stock photography picture book was just "Dumb!" And maybe they're right. But I think the novelty of this book rests behind the humorous selection of photography to convey a simple message. This book isn't reading enjoyment...it's visual enjoyment. You'll find your mind filling in the blanks to "get" the joke. It's a great book to see...not read.
