Wonderful book.......2007-08-01
This is an absolutely wonderful book. Kathy Hepinstall is a talented writer, who writes unique stories with highly developed characters. I read somewhere between 60 and 80 books a year, and Kathy Hepinstall is the best author I've come across in a few years.
This was a great story........2007-03-12
I enjoyed this story and found it unique. The author really takes you into the characters and makes you feel for them. The only reason I gave only 4 stars is because I would have liked to have seen what happened to each charcter in the end. The ending is abrupt. An epiloge would have been nice. All in all and exceelent debut for Kathy Hepinstall.
Impressive Debut.......2006-08-06
Hepinstall's first novel successfully sucks the reader into the deep south with seemingly little effort. While the plot is pretty unbelievable, you find yourself quite willing to go along with it. After all, it's a story and Hepinstall is pretty darn good at telling a story.
The novel's biggest flaw is that Hepinstall over-exposes the motifs, supposedly subtextual meanings, symbolism, etc. The reader doesn't get to have the fun of connecting symobls or exploring meaning --- because Heptinstall gets so excited about the purification of fire that she comes right out and tells the reader that the fire symbolizes so-and-so's redemption. Over and over and over again.
As a reader, that's half of the fun of reading---I like exploring possible meanings of different things, so Hepinstall's text often comes across as "look how deep this plot-twist is and make sure you read this paragraph correctly"--which I find irritating.
Aside from that, The House of Gentle Men is immensely creative and entertaining. Hepinstall has a few kinks in her writing style to get out, but I'm looking forward to reading what she writes next.
A Great Story of Forgiveness..........2005-10-05
This was an incredibly sweet story about the ultimate forgiveness. About a man committing an act so heinous, and a woman finding it in her heart to see past the hurt and anger, and love that man.
At first I didn't know what to think about the premise. In 1944 a young girl's brutally raped in the Louisiana woods by three solders. Seven years later she unknowingly falls in love with one of her attackers. I figured once she found out the truth, that would be the end of the affair. I didn't see how it could possibly go any other way and I'd still like the story. But it did.
Now, I've never been in a situation such as Charlotte's, and I know some reviewers here had a real problem with the story, but I think because it was just purely fiction to me, I was able to enjoy it, and find it somewhat believable.
My only issue with the book that kept me from giving it five stars was the ending. I was pretty disappointed in how abruptly it ended. After reading the last paragraph I turned the page ready to devour the next chapter and was stunned that the book was over. I really would have liked to find out everyone's fate. For the most part I really liked the book and highly recommend it, though some may be extremely sensitive to it's content, and therefore should not read this.

THIS WAS KATHY HEPINSTALL'S FIRST NOVEL AND THE LAST ONE I WILL READ!! I WANTED TO STOP READING FROM CHAPTERS 1-5, BUT HATE TO GIVE UP ON A BOOK. STARTING @ CHAPTER 16 THE STORY BECAME SOME WHAT BAREABLE.CHAPTER 33, THE LAST CHAPTER, WAS GOOD UNTIL THE LAST PAGE.

The only problem I have with this is that this far in the series, it becomes sort of repetitive.
I still loved this book very much, but some of it is kind of predictable. Some of the events repeat themselves several times throughout the series. I won't mention them, as I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't read it, but I think it takes away from the story.
Other than that, though, this is a wonderful buy and I would recomend it to any avid fantasy reader.
Epic Saga.......2001-08-09
This is a wonderful story with fabulous characters. Each character has a totem animal, which is his other self. They,"The Cheysuli" are awaiting a prophesied son to return balance to the world. Lots of magic and mayhem. What I remember best is hating it when one character got old and died and Roberson went into the next generations. I got so involved with each of them.

I'v e been to the bookstores and have seen a lot of your books and find the characters to be believable and empathetic. Young people seem to really enjoy your style and ability to create surprise, mystery and excite, all the while weaving very grounded principles and morals to the stories.

In this third installment in the Dinoverse series, the time machine that caused all the chaos in the first two books flares to life once again, bringing three new teenagers and a teacher back to the time of the dinosaurs. I have thoroughly enjoyed this series, and highly recommend them. These books show young readers the value of friendship, as each teen must put aside their personal problems to help one another, so they can all return to the present day safely. The teens also begin to see their teacher as a trusted friend rather than just another adult authority figure. These books would be great for boys who may not be interested in reading; they contain a lot of adventure and excitement. These books also present good values associated with friendship and "fitting in" with a peer group as a teen.

Great little book........2004-12-13
As a Sunday school teacher, who is always looking for new ideas, this book was a welcomed edition to my library. The cards and gifts were inexpensive, easy, and beautiful to make. Also, the price of this book made this a great value. The only minor flaw that I found with this book was in the cake decorating chapter, where I felt that the measurements of how to cut the cake was not detailed enough. Other cake decorating books have a diagram of how to cut the cake according to inches. This book did not. However, I feel that this is still an excellent purchase. I love looking through it for new tips. The book's cover is very pretty as well.
Great resource for cards, eats, and gifts........2004-01-16
Better Homes and Gardens has added another great book to their standard of excellence. The book is divided into 3 sections. The first part introduces some very artistic cards with some wonderfully fun and decorative ideas and detailed instructions, supply list, and envelope ideas. At the end of this section are patterns of envelopes on graph paper, making them easier to duplicate. Second, cakes which are beautiful, fun, and not as difficult as you might think. Again with recipe, directions and display ideas. The last section contains creative gift ideas with full instructions. This book has color photos on quality paper. I do alot of rubber stamping and found this book full of new and cleaver ideas.
Classy cards, cakes and gifts.......2003-03-21
This isn't a book for kids parties or cards. This has projects for the ladies you love and also men. Imaginative cards, and I love the mosiac look of a cake with hard candy on top. I think the painted desk accessories would be more for a teenager. The cupcakes decorated with rolled gumdrops (bees etc OR fruits) are my favorite! A little bit of everything: from card to cake making to a smattering of gifts. Fun book.

Celebrate Spring is full of many delicious looking recipes. I was hoping for cookbook that makes use of seasonal foods and produce, but this book is more a list of spring themed party ideas (for St. Patrick's Day, Easter, various afternoon teas) each with a menu, suggestions for decorations, party favors, homemade gifts and crafts. While there are some recipes that use springtime produce like asparagus, peas, and rhubarb there are also recipes which call for fresh apricots, peaches, blueberries, raspberries, basil and other summer produce. Also, the suggestions about making spice garlands, drying herbs and the use of dried lavender seemed oddly out of place in a book about springtime. It's a nice enough book, but it's not what I was looking for

This book is the second best book in the series, just because I'm biased and like autumn better. The book had cute idea's for mother's day, special's for easter, a whole dinner for St. Pat's etc etc. Each chapter also came with helpfull gooseberry hints at the end. Besides with Gooseberry recipes who can go wrong?

I love books about the seasons, and this is one of the best I have read to my children. The wording is perfect - full of everything fun for kids about the season, and the illustrations are beautiful. Also, at the end of the book is a list of activities to do in the springtime with kids. We have the fall book, too, and are anxiously awaiting the winter and summer books to be released.

I'm from Mexico, and bought this book to learn this incredible program, but I soon discover not only the basics in this text but a hole comprehensible information about ALL the stuff in the program!! I widely reccomend it and not only for the 3DS Max version 3 but for 4, 5 and 6.

This book is okay, if you know your spanish well enough to translate and associate it with the english used in the program. The book is all spanish including the illustration which I found to be a downside since the program is in english. The cd included is nice, but it does not show you how the object is created. In all it is a good reference book if you already know how to use the program and just want to brush up on details.

Will James connection.......1998-07-08
Hello. I read "Cowboyograghy" this past christmas. I knew Ian's life was was influenced by W. James after viewing the NFB film "Alias Will James". But reading that book gave me more insight about Ian's life. I missed his concert here in Nepean last year (1997). This year, October 1998, I will be there, seeking Ian Tyson's autogragh, right on his book "Cowboyograghy". I am Will James great nephew, and it would be an honour to meet Ian. Can you let him know?
