Employing a strange and bountiful cast of characters, The Sinaloa Story bobs and weaves as if challenging the reader to follow a spectacular, if often incoherent, narrative. This is no small task, considering the action rolls at a page-turning clip and reads like a noir film treatment in which characters are ushered in and out of the plot with the speed and finality of a high-caliber slug. The story line, such as it is, revolves around DelRay Mudo, a dim-witted mechanic who falls hard for Ava Varazo, a stunning and scheming prostitute who easily beguiles him into helping her rob her pimp of $500,000, part of which belongs to Mr. Nice, a notorious mob boss. When Ava quickly dumps DelRay (and locks him in the trunk of his car) then splits with the cash, this development comes as no surprise. When she heads to Mexico to join a guerilla band known as the Countless Raindrops, however, an unforeseen and intriguing twist begins. This twist abruptly unravels into a bizarre tangle of events which are connected to previous episodes by only the thinnest of threads. The result is a darkly exhilarating and scattershot ride in which kidnapping, murder, amnesia, and prophetic dreams abound, as do colorful personalities with memorable names such as Cobra Box, Ruby Ponds Cure, Thankful Priest, and Cairo Fly.

To say the book is nonlinear is putting it mildly; the only thing some of these vignettes have in common is that they happen to be contained within the same book. But Gifford has a knack for creating electrifying, grainy snapshots of subterranean life, pulling defining moments into vivid focus while leaving the background mired in shadow and mystery. The characters are not deep, but they are rich, and even those who appear for only a paragraph or two are memorable, adding much to the setting, if not the plot.

As might be expected of one who has written screenplays for (Wild at Heart) and with (Lost Highway) David Lynch, Barry Gifford paints hypnotic dreamscapes in which the atmosphere is the driving force behind the narrative. Those searching for a seamless, let alone believable, story will be left shaking their heads, but those willing to suspend reality and embrace even the most outlandish coincidences and tattered loose ends will enjoy the staccato dialogue, gritty detail, and oddly appealing cast in this eerie joy ride along the dark fringes of America. --Shawn Carkonen

The Sinaloa Story tells of DelRay Mudo and Ava Varazo, two down-and-outs looking for a reasonable life and maybe even a little redemption in a corrupt and violent world. Ava is a Mexican prostitute, beautiful and no victim of circumstance. When DelRay falls in love with her at the drive-in whorehouse where she is the prize, she seizes the chance to break free. They take off for Sinaloa, Texas, the lone-dog state where "nothin' good ever happens." The host of far-out border flunkies they meet-Thankful Priest, the one-eyed former football player; Indio Desacato, Ava's pimp and a small-town racketeer; Arkadelphia Quantrill Smith, an octogenarian whose father marched with Shelby in the Iron Brigade; and many others-fill out the sinister and electrifying ride.

Barry Gifford is the author of over 40 published works of fiction, nonfiction and poetry, including Wild at Heart, Wyoming, The Rooster Trapped in the Reptile Room: A Barry Gifford Reader and Do the Blind Dream?.

Reptilian Saturday Nite Sex & Violence Stomp.......2003-07-09

Whoa! There's a lot going on here in paucas palabras. We're in one of those border nightmares where Texas, Arizona, and Mexico all ooze together into some kind of sharp southwestern guisado with enough lard and chiles to singe your lips and leave a brownish cloud around your cabeza. Add jeans that are too tight, old cars, bad norteno music, and chicas that are muy guapa and hot to trot -- and you get Barry Gifford, the Sage of Big Tuna, at his very best.

I've seen David Lynch's WILD AT HEART and LOST HIGHWAYS, both based on Gifford books, but straight Gifford hits you right upside the gut with a haymaker.

The hot relationship between DelRay Mudo and Ava Varazo is interrupted when the latter blows away her pimp, Indio Desacato, and runs off to La Villania (Nasty), Mexico, to take up with an obscure political cause. Everything goes to hell when Cobra Box, her associate, goes to Bad Leopard, Idaho, to buy guns. Nobody ultimately gets together with anybody: just overheated bodies caroming around in a ranchero beat with the occasional gratuitous sex or violence. As Cairo Fly put it in his diary that closes the book, "Is it possible for a person's soul to stray away or be stolen and without it the person has no peace in their heart? I feel I am one of those now."

There is something mesmerizing about Gifford's staccato chapters. Try too hard to follow the story, and you wind up like Thankful Priest with a bullet in your head in some godforsaken south of the border hellhole. No, man, just keep going to the beat. Sometimes, you fall off the edge of the world; sometimes you get good Tequila with your chilaquiles.

I've got to get me some more of those Gifford books -- if this one's any indicator.

Oh my God it's full of stars.......2002-08-23

Let us begin straight to the point. You do not want to read this book. Trust me. It is totally uninventive, poorly written, characters look like they just got out from a movie of a 'F' production, story is dull, and it doesn't keep the reader attracted to the book. I do not know for the other Gifford books, but this one definitely shouldn't be called a book, and especially shouldn't be sold to anyone. Only reason this book got two stars is a hint of an atmosfere that you could sniff somehow but it constantly keeps losing itself. If you still want to buy this book, than the main story is: Ava Varazo is a member of a Mexican revolution and in an attempt to find the money (steal it) from a American bordel owner, she meets Mudo DelRay, after she cheats him and locks him in the trunk she returns into her village La Villania where she continues to struggle against goverment. There are few more characters in the book, and all of them somehow crosses paths with Ava (some on a broader scale).
And the final warning, to not buy this book, read it if you must, but do it in the library (you'll need just few hours).

What happen to the B19 Clearance Mat Trans.......2002-05-16

In this volume the 6 friends plus "Man whose eyes sees more" arrive in a redoubt that has not one mat trans unit but two. The second Mat Trans is in a departing mode, (someone leaving) and the friends find Space suits. I've not seen anywhere in any of the other books any explination for this occurance. Of course the infrance is this Mat Trans Unit connects to a space station. Other then this the book was great, Just wish Donphil More "Man Whose eyes see more" had stayed with the group longer.

Interesting Reading.......2001-03-13

While this is one of James Axlers first books in the Deathlands series, it portrays all the characters in excellent detail, and good form. I like the older books better than the new additions to the series, because of lack of extreme fantasy. These first few books were easy to relate to and to ultimately imagine being there. I find this one especially entertaining and provacative because it deals with the sea and the wonders beneath.

Sai Baba's miracles are beyond the laws of physics. I know!.......2005-08-30

I was 11 years old.

I was standing with my Mom and Dad outside his Whitefield ashram in Bangalore, India and my Dad had brought us to visit the Sai Baba.

My Dad knew him well. He was Sai Baba's chief banker.

Sai Baba came out of the ashram. Saw my Dad and came over to talk.

He could see my Dad was not feeling well.

"What is wrong with you, Mr. XXXXXX?" he asked.

My dad explained. For years my Dad had a syndrome called Menier's Syndrome (incorrect spelling). It is an imbalance between the ears that causes massive attacks of dizziness. My Dad told Sai Baba that this was incurable and he had learnt to live with it. Some days were just horrible.

Sai Baba looked concerned. "Mr. XXXXXX!" He said. "Let me give you medicine that works! Take two a cay and you will be fine in a few weeks!"

He pulled his sleevs back. He rubbed his palms together. As I watched in astonisment several hundred pills (tablets) started falling out of his hands in a steady stream (as if coming out of an invisible tap). I was so astonished I almost peed in my pants. Several hundred pills fell to the floor making a big mound. My Mom bent down and used her sarry (Indian woman costume) to grab all the pills and tie them into a little bag.

This is no slieght of hand. What I saw was real. My Dad took me to visit the Sai Baba several times in his inner quarters. We would all sit down on the floor and Sai Baba would talk to us. Several times he would just open and close his fist in thin air and would give me neat little medals and trinkets. I wish I had saved them so I can look at them today.

I was just a kid. I know one thing. What I saw of the Baba I find it hard to believe even today. I can not comprehend it. I am scientist today and I choose to live in ignorance because I can not face fairly and squarely what the Baba does. I know in my heart that what he does is not just "David Copperfield" type magic. He has real supernatural powers.

I have no reason to lie or exaggerate. What exactly am I gaining? I do not like nor do I follow the Baba. Instead, I follow another wonderful Guru from the same state Baba hails from (Gurur Ragavendra of Mantralaya).

My Dad passed away just a few years back. But before he did he sat me down and told me the real "scoop" behind Sai Baba's miracles. While I can not share the details with you I can only tell you that the Baba has truly supernatural powers. My Dad just shed more light on how Baba came to acquire his supernatural powers and how he actually puts them to use in real life.

NOTE. The powers are supernatural. They can not be explained by the laws of physics and nature. Are you now quaking in your boots? You should, because I am doing as such as I write this incredible review which I never meant to.

The universe is not as you see it. The laws of physics are not complete. They do not account for the dimension that we do not yet see or comprehend.

Don't buy this book.......2004-08-17

this is not a very good Baba book. Purty's is better but hard to find in this country.

Sai Baba, Man or God?.......2004-08-01

Howard Murphet has shown himself to be a very inaccurate and fanciful reporter of many events. He claimed, for example, that Hitler was persuaded when he made the final decision to invade the USSR by the influence of Sri Aurobindo of India! But Hitler had planned this for many years, and the invasion plans had been in full operation since the end of the Battle of Britain. A man who claims such absurd things cannot be trusted not to have been duped by his own desires to experience miracles and more. Therefore, this book is highly suspect from beginning to end.

Great book for open minded people - bigots need not buy........2004-02-14

I've read this book and no one has to believe something they have not experinced. Murphets experience is well described. Yes, I too have learnt from the Satya Sai Organisation. Sai Baba doesn't ask for followers.

Take this book as you may - with skepticism or any other way but don't bother with the moronic reviews that attack the subject of the book. Any teacher of any substance will be attacked by people with an axe to grind. Articles on the web attacking Baba or reviews that state unproven and blatently false allegations should be given the attention one gives to trash in the gutter.

If you have an open mind, and are interested go for it. Religious bigots and people with an axe to grind - save your money and a tree. Don't tell us you shredded the book, just don't buy it.

Boom boom Baba.......2002-07-21

Sai Baba is noteworthy more for the size of his afro than for his hypocrisy, which is probably about average for the saint business. He is fairly discrete about having sex with his followers, which is to his credit, and while he does make his fortune bilking the gullible he is moderate in his predations compared to, say, Rev. Moon. ...

Still, read this book if you wonder whether it is more profitable to be an honest man or an exploiter of the credulous.

Fun and Tasty Too!.......2000-01-08

This cookbook has fun twists on some old favorites. The cornish game hens stuffed with orange wedges, rosemary and garlic and glazed with orange marmalade and rosemary was yummy! I bought this book to give as a gift, but I have to order another because the pages are wearing! If you grow your own herbs or purchase them at the store, this is a great book for using herbs in your cooking.

Very unhelpful.......2001-02-27

This book was amazingly unhelpful to me. It touches too briefly on too many different aspects of quilt collecting, without going into depth on anything. For example, included is a list of names of common quilt patterns, with no pictures or diagrams to tell you which pattern is which. What pictures there are are black and white and too small to show anything in detail. I'm not sure what kind of expert I'm supposed to be after reading this book, but it's not the kind of expert who knows anything!

I would stay away from this book. There are other titles that are much better.
