                    4 out of 5 stars Thor!.......2007-05-10

Unlike Marrillier's previous books, This book is narrated by a male. It took me a little longer to get into the book. This book was good but not my favorite. This book has much action but less love. Bust still good.

5 out of 5 stars Fine piece of historical literature.......2007-01-13

This book is one of the most interesting books of historical literature I have read in a long time. I really enjoy the characters and the plot keeps you guessing. It's not always a happy book, and you don't always like what happens, but it makes you keep wanting to read on. I really enjoy this author's work!

4 out of 5 stars When does faith prevent truth?.......2006-07-14

While reading this book one scenario kept popping into my head. A group of children say all about eleven years old, goes on a walk to an abandoned field. Once there, they set up their own little world, totally cut off from adult supervision. The child among them most interested in law and rule is somehow removed. What happens to the truth in this group of children? Left all alone will they act as they should, with morals, or fall into a pit of desperation? Will the strong bully the weak and allow power to solely rule the people? What role with fairness, wisdom truth and standing up for what is right hold in this new world?

That sounds a lot like Lord of Flies (not that I've ever read it) but it's also what happens in this book, about Vikings. A settlement to a far off island, already peopled, heads in a terrible direction when those interested in peace are removed, and everyone left falls under the spell of blindly following the leader. This novels deals with truth, redemption, and quite a bit about faith. Specifically, when does blind faith, or trust, cross a line that prevents free thought? How far can we go in our faith to anything? How much does truth matter compared to trust and faith and keeping your word? This is also a fairly dark book, but reminds us that there is always light in truth.

Like all of this authors books the writing is beautiful. I felt this was a much more complicated novel then anything she's written before, especially with the subtext of the book. The plot also seems to be more complicated, even if it is a bit like something out of a fairy tale and thus fairly predictable. I did get annoyed with the latest in this authors never ending stream of amazingly wise, competent, beautiful and powerful 16 or 17 year old girls. An older heroine would be nice.

This made me think, so four stars. I'll read the sequel, but this will never be one of my favorite novels. I did learn a lot about Vikings, especially the faith element of the so called "berserkers", and the way their life of war was viewed.

                    4 out of 5 stars Good.......2006-03-14

In comparison to most novels, this perhaps deserves more than 4 stars. But in comparison to Marillier's other novels, I have to own I was a bit disappointed.

The story does draw you in and hold you, but the expectations created by the Sevenwaters Trilogy didn't quite hold up.

3 out of 5 stars Well-written, but drags too often.......2006-01-09

Comparisons to Marillier's first books, Daughter of the Forest et al., are inevitable. I'm not much of a fantasy reader - the cheesy novel covers and melodramatic plot summaries on the back covers usually turn me off. But I do love historical fiction, and so I picked up that series on the advice of a friend. I was astounded and bewitched the quality of writing in all three novels. I'd heard the fairy tale of the swans as a child, and it was a delight to relive it as fleshed out on the page by Marillier, and to see how she imagined the continuation of the legend in the two equally excellent sequels.

However, I was less than impressed with Wolfskin - even though, as one reviewer mentions, it is still very good compared to most fiction out there. Marillier really has a magical style of writing that draws you into another world. It is so utterly romantic. I also love the themes that seem to be a common thread throughout her novels - respect for the earth, respect for other peoples and other beliefs. I wish the Bush administration would read her novels; perhaps it would awaken some humanity in them.

While the things I loved about her first novels are still present in Wolfskin, there's such a thing as too much of a good thing, and it's this quality that ultimately means I can only give 3 stars. First of all, while the novel starts out well, the second half of the book really drags. Most notable is the entire section of the plot when Eyvind is taking refuge with Nessa and Rona. There is just too much dialogue and description, and too little action, which weakens the pacing and the reader's interest tremendously. At least 100 pages could have been shaved off of the last half of the book, without losing any of the intriguing plot twists and character development. Even the characters grow weary of it - during one particularly lengthy debate towards the end, Somerled growls something akin to, "Can we get on with it already?!" Amen, brother.

Another weakness is constant repetition. For instance - and this just might be my little quirk - must we really be reminded thirty or so times through the book that Kinart is Nessa's cousin?

Despite these criticisms, Wolfskin is still an entertaining read. It's an interesting story with profound themes, and the characterizations are also well-done. The exception is Nessa, who isn't very original. Most of the time, she seems to be almost a Xerox copy of Sorcha or Liadan from Daughter of the Forest and Son of the Shadows, respectively. However, the interplay between Somerled and Eyvind - or should I say power play - is fascinating. Marillier portrays Eyvind's inner conflict - as he struggles between his violent Viking identity and the awakening of more pacifist beliefs, between his oath of loyalty to Somerled and what he knows to be right and just - with true finesse.

I didn't know much about the Vikings at all before I started reading this book, but this fictional rendering of their colonization of Orkney has prompted me to want to begin learning more about them. (Note: There's a historical note at the end of the novel that provides good background to the story. It's meant to be read at the end, I suppose, but I wish I'd read it before starting the novel, since it provides some valuable context.)

                                    Book Description

Within the long-lost Temple of Luna, built by Alexander the Great to store his most valuable possessions, Lara Croft discovers a device that leads the way to the deadliest artifact of all time: the legendary Pandora's Box. Hidden for centuries in a place known to the pharaohs as "the cradle of life," the box that once brought life to Earth now contains only a lethal plague. Unfortunately for Lara, a ruthless bioterrorist has uncovered the existence of this weapon as well.

The only person who can help Lara get to the box first is a former Royal Marine -- once Britain's finest soldier and now an immoral mercenary who sells his deadly skills to the highest bidder. Once Lara trusted her heart to Terry Sheridan. Now she's not sure if she dares to turn her back on him.

With the fate of the world hanging in the balance, Lara Croft must trust Sheridan once again. And watch him closely, lest he betray her -- and civilization itself -- one last, catastrophic time.

I'm a big Tomb Raider fan and also a fan of Angelina Jolie and I think this book is very good and it seems that the book was better than the first book. The book has good action sequences and kind of humorous at some parts. The plot is awesome and it one of those can't-put-the-book-down books. Another thing good about the book is it's at a low price! The highest price i've seen for the book so far is $...!!

As usual, Lara Croft is the first tomb raider on the scene. Once inside, Lara discovers a treasure more precious than she ever expected -- the secret to finding the Cradle of Life.

The minions of biological weapons designer Dr. Jonathan Reiss intercept Lara at the Luna Temple and steal the key to locating the Cradle of Life. Now Lara must track it across the globe to the mountains of Kenya and find the site of the Cradle of Life before Dr. Reiss can destroy mankind. Local tribesmen say that no one has ever survived the quest for the Cradle of Life. Apparently they've never met Lara.

These beautifully illustrated tales capture the mystery, enchantment, and profound spiritual teachings of India.

Story-telling has always been the way that India's holy men, the saints and sadhus, taught their students the vital lessons of life. Stories provide a living environment for the lesson of each story, and they can convey sophisticated concepts in simple language. Abounding with powerful genies, scheming gods, and wise mystics, The Monkeys and the Mango Tree can be read as an exotic Aesop's Fables, as a source of classic wisdom, or as a simple and memorable introduction to the stories of the most spiritual civilization on earth. These twenty-five beautifully illustrated tales capture the mystery, the enchantment, and the profound spiritual learning that is India.

Drawn from the great Indian epics?the Puranas, the Upanishads, and the Mahabharata?as well as from the author's own remarkable life, these tales put ageless Indian wisdom into the form of stories that are delights for young and old alike.

4 out of 5 stars Teaching Stories from India.......2002-01-24

The book comprises of 25 short stories from India. These stories are developed in the context of the saints and sadhus of this land of ancient religions. Each story has a clear moral message to the young people for whom these are targeted. The simplicity of the style and the language makes it easy for everyone to follow the events even if one is uninitiated in the cultural and religious complexity of India.

3 out of 5 stars Not good, not bad, depends on what else you've read.......2000-09-21

The selection of tales in this volume is acceptable - if you've read little of this type of literature, you will probably be positively impressed with the variety of stories and with the fact that few of the stories are blatantly diadactic. If you have read much similar material, the stories will strike you as satisfactory in their retelling but you will have seen much of the material before, often with much more sparkle to the story.

The Bird of Prosperity tells of a poor family whose concern for each other gains them wealth and conpares their plight with the plight of a greedy family.

The Butter in the Milk is primarily an analogy of God in the universe compared to butter in the milk.

The Saint and the Scorpion is a story of the value in following your dharma.

The Merchant Who Would Not Go to Heaven is a story of a Merchant who has to many responsibilities to accept an offer to go to heaven.

Siva and the Demon, and Narada's Infatuation come from Hindu mythology.

The book contains about 25 such stories alone with etching style illustrations; the foreward is best left unread.

                                      1 out of 5 stars Too confusing!.......2007-05-25

Very confusing book starting with a short presentation of Corgi. Then comes many pages listing short notes about models, these are listed partially by vehicles number but not always chronological, totally confusing and frustrating. No listing of variants, so you would not be helped if you need information about this. (Which is a popular subject among collectors.) Then comes a picture section, that does not match the listing, and also very short description under the pictures. I have used hours to work my way through this booklet just because of this weird non matching listing. In the end, it starts listing up cars again, this section should have been together with the first one and not been split up by the picture section. The pictures was too small and did not show good enough details of details, decals and stickers, as I would expect from a book specializing on Corgi. I cannot recommend this book to anyone, and I regret I bought it.

                                        Book Description

Hop in for a complete tour of the tiny world this British toy maker created. Explore four decades of diecast production, following the route the industry took as it shed outdated techniques for state-of-the-art cars James Bond would have been proud of. Written from the unique perspective of an American collector, the book presents topics never before discussed in print, chronicling the rise, fall, and rebirth of Corgi Toys, all illustrated with hundreds of color photos of models and memorabilia never before seen in print. The smaller Husky and Corgi Juniors lines, often neglected in other books, are also covered. Other sections examine Corgi clubs, marketing, packaging, memorabilia, and special interest groupings. Most importantly, this encylopedia presents the most complete variation listing and value guide published to date, including sections covering Corgi, Husky, and Juniors models from their introduction through the present day.

This is a wonderful guide for anyone who is into collecting Corgi toys. I especially enjoyed the value guide in the back even though this book was published 10 years ago.My only disappointment was that the author didn't put more information about the "Character" cars which I am so fond of collecting.

                                                        Book Description

Why do architects still use the classical orders? Why use forms derived from ancient Greek temples when ancient Greek religion has been dead for centuries and when the way of life they expressed is extinct? And why decorate a contemporary courthouse with the bones, eggs, darts, claws, and garlands that an ancient Greek would recognize as the trappings of animal sacrifice?

With these provocative questions George Hersey begins his recovery of the meaning of classical architecture. For the last four centuries, he shows, philology and formalism have drained architecture of its poetry. By analyzing this poetry - the tropes founded on the Greek terms for ornamental detail - he reconstructs a classical theory about the origin and meaning of the orders, one that links them to ancient sacrificial ritual and myth.

In doing so, Hersey reinterprets key tales and taboos that were part of the cultural memory of the ancient Greeks. His touchstone is Vitruvius, author of the only surviving classical treatise on architecture, whose stories about Dorus, Ion, and the Corinthian maiden, and about the Caryaean women and Persian soldiers, describe the orders as records or remembrances of sacrifice.

Hersey finds revivals of this consciousness in the Italian Renaissance and throws new light on the works of the architectural theorists Francesco di Giorgio and Ceasare Cesariano, and also on Raphael's Disputá, Michelangelo's tomb of Julius 11 and Medici Chapel, and Hugues Sambin's handbook on termini.

George Hersey is Professor of Art History at Yale University and the author of many books, including Architecture, Poetry, and Number in the Royal Palace at Caserta (MIT Press 1983).

its wonderful to read details regarding the birth of greek architecture, the birth of classicism. the heads above arches, those sorry warriors, beaten. the blood letting flutes, fat dripping thigh bones, guttae from the triglyphs if i remember correctly. no wonder classicism is so haunting - sometimes touching - the echinus shape on the capital of tuscan and doric is also the name for "hedgehog" - its gently sloping butt is the same and also for "little cake" as in the sloping crescendo of a risin cupcake's belly. humane architecture has its birth in death - modernism is only intellectual. a subjective dream of babel. in the study of words are clues to the strength of classical architecture.

5 out of 5 stars Hersey at his best!.......2004-03-15

I bought this book and finished it the day it arrived. I couldn't put it down. It reads like a detective story for architecture enthusiasts. Hersey begins this work by introducing a cluster of tropes that at first seem disparate items. As he develops his arguments (and there are many) he weaves a beautiful tapestry with these tropes. Hersey brings the roots of Greek architecture alive (literally). If he were a philosopher I would be tempted to compare him to Nietzsche in his ability to uncover the conceptual ruins of ancient art. I also recommend Hersey's other work, but this one is my favorite.

                                                        5 out of 5 stars A wonderful, provocative book.......1999-07-16

The book discusses the persistence of ideas and the ways that ancient belief systems can work their way right into our language and the way we perceive the world. This is certainly a major contribution to the philosophical literature architectural historians have produced.
