Book Description
From Granny Catchprice, who runs her family business -- and her family -- with senility, cunning, and a handbag full of explosives to sixteen-year-old Benny, who dreams of transforming a failing automobile franchise into an empire -- and himself into an angel -- the Catchprices may be the most spectacularly contentious family since Dostoevsky's Karamozovs. But when a beautiful and very pregnant agent of the Australian Taxation Office enters their lives, the resulting collision becomes, in Carey's hands, masterpiece of coal-black humour and compassionate horror.

Not Carey's Best..........2006-11-24
Having just finished "Theft" and having read a number of Carey's other novels, this one was a disappointment. Much of this may have to do with the fact that this was written early in his career, a time where writers presumably work on finding their voice. I think my overly critical view of the novel may have to do with my respect for his much later work, but this novel, an account of a few pivotal days in the lives of the Catchprices, a dysfunctional family that owns a car dealership, although interesting, is flawed in so many ways. The novel reminded me of Zadie Smith's 'On Beauty,' but without the feeling of truly knowing and understanding the characters and what drives them.
Two central figuresdrive this novel - Benny, a 16 year old who wants to reinvent himself, and Maria, the character who the book's title refers to. What ensues is three days that change the lives of all of the people in this family. Maria is asked to come and audit the family's books, much to her chagrin, and soon finds herself caught up in the family's drama.
Carey's prose is tight and each sentence's smooth, almost lilting flow, most certainly foreshadows Carey's future success. Unfortunately, with so many characters to juggle, the story never fully comes together. Carey seems to want to include every character he can think of as well as their motivations, but instead gives us only bits and pieces of everyone, providing a somewhat disjointed narrative. At one point, I couldn't even tell all the family members apart. The only thing that ends up differentiating them is their gender and the one crazy identifying feature - one is a Hare Krishna, another is a wannabee country star, etc. Their voices blend into each other to the point where I could have been reading about anyone in the novel.
If you are a Carey fan, this book is important in terms of seeing the writer grow. If not, stick to his more recent novels, as you will be far more entertained by them.
another brilliant carey novel.......2002-03-11
Carey's novels are so dark. I'm seduced by the prose and the situations but always find myself achingly wondering how I can bear to read more about the horrible histories of the characters and the tragic relationships between them. Mostly the characters start off seemingly likeable but the more I read the less I can identify with them.
The Tax Collector is another brilliant Peter Carey book, thankfully with a glimpse of hope in the mostly appalling ending. I'm glad there are still some more Carey novels left that I haven't read!
A Though but Worthwile Trip into Guilt.......2001-08-14
The Tax Inspector maybe about the Catchprizes, a family entangled in its own guilt, sick games, and confusing emotion. It may also be about Maria, who gets into the Catchprize's path of destruction just by trying to perform a pointless auditing of their financial books (we learn from the first pages they are practically broke). But I could say the book is more about the emotional handicaped. No single character leaves this mess standing-up. Not even marginal characters like Maria's friend, lover and coworkers. Not even the reader. This is no book to put down as entertainment. Carey writes like a virtuous, his use of language to convey past and present into a downsiding spiral of distress is memorable. You will find yourself deep into Catchprize motors, you'll smell the oil stains, the decay and the hopelesness.
Strong stuff.......2001-02-15
This is the second Peter Carey book I've read, Oscar and Lucinda being the first. It took me a year to get over Oscar et al., before I could pick up The Tax Inspector. What a ride! Now another year has passed and I'm ready to see what Mr. Carey is going to do to me this time. I could read three "Hannibal" books in a row, but I can't do that with Carey books. There's an intensity that goes beyond my ability to describe it.
A maelstrom of stories combine in a darkly comic yarn........1999-01-29
Another totally unpredictable masterpiece by Peter Carey. Poor Maria, young, intelligent, beautiful, and gifted so far in her life with financial/career success, is thrust into juxtaposition with the Catchprice family when she is assigned to audit Catchprice Motors. The Catchprices seem to epitomize the modern dysfunctional family, a wild blend of discordant characters commonly saddled with guilt and impossible dreams. Against the Catchprice backdrop, Maria shines like a diamond. Unfortunately, the Catchprices are charmed by Maria, too, and their attempts to bring her into their world are varied and unforgettable.
Far busier and more entangled than Bliss, less uplifting than either Bliss or Jack Maggs, this is not a book for the faint of heart, or those prone to depression! But there is still a thread of hope throughout this tale, winding through seamy strands of dishonesty and craziness.

Truly Hardcore.......2005-09-15
Spoiler Alert
The reason why so many traditional comic book readers hates Bendis is because he is not a traditonal comic book writer. He will not give you stale stories of where the good guys beat the bad guys and they always come back, where the status quo never changes. But Bendis doens't change the status of the characters just for increased salesr such as the death of superman . All his change creates a great story. Volume 7 is about Daredevil being truly hardcore. He has had enough loss in his life and he will take control of his destiny in just one volume. There are no more epic struggles between the good guy and the bad guy. This is it: Daredevil is making his stand. In Volume 7, he takes out his greatest enemies which include typhoid Mary, Bullseyes, and the Kingpin. But rather giving them the chance to reinstigate the fight in the future, he makes his declaration to his enemies. He psychologically analyzes Bulls-Eye during their battle and scars him physically. He beats the Kingpin into submission and throws his carcass in front of Hell's Kitchen seedier citizen. He proclaims that he is the devil and Hell's Kitchen is his kingdom.
Attention Bendis haters.......2004-12-21
I understand why many comic book lovers hate Bendis. He writes too much dialogue, forcing artists to draw repetitive pictures of characters just standing there talking. I like it and I think it fits the now-older Daredevil who probably needs to take things a little slower and smarter, but I understand your complaint.
This book is a little different. Daredevil finally gets to stop talking and start kicking butt. There is a wonderful fight in this book between DD and Bullseye that has a great splash page and some snappy effective dialogue. He also takes out the Kingpin and shows his dark side. Along with "Out," this is one of my favorites of the Bendis run.
Trying To Hit The Mark.......2004-07-20
Let me explain where I'm coming from. I hate pretty much all post-Torso Brian Michael Bendis work, particularly his Marvel stuff. I think Ultimate Spider-Man was complete idiot fluff and that Alias was one of the least-shocking shocking books ever put out. I don't understand nor buy into the hype of Mr. Bendis's work, regardless of what Wizard tells nerds they're supposed to think.
Now, here's where I got mad. I kept hearing buzz about his Dare Devil run and picked up my first TPB with the excuse that I was checking out Alex Maleev's incredible artwork. Maleev's artwork is incredible but saddly it was a double whammy; Bendis's story was great.
I now own the three TPB's that lead up to Hardcore (Underboss, Out, and Lowlife) and have told everyone I know, much to my chagrin over Mr. Bendis, to read them. In fact, if your reading this and don't own them, buy them right now. They are one of the few solid crime-yarns out today, regardless of format, and pay proper homage to the rich heritage of the Dare Devil books.
I fell in love with them and was foaming at the mouth over the inevitable conclusion between Dare Devil and the Kingpin and Bullseye. I cannot remember a better set up in comics to a fight yet to come. Everything of those three previously mentioned books was leading specifically up to the brawl to end all brawls in this collection, Hardcore.
Hardcore came and I'm not to particularly impressed.
This here is my spoiler warning.
After some twenty or so issues hinting at the return of Bullseye, everyone's favorite assassin shows up in his horrible movie look and proceeds to get his butt thuroughly kicked in a single issue. Then ol' hornhead goes after the Kingpin directly and proceeds to stomp a mudhole in his ample behind in a single issue.
Three TPB's of setup and it ends in two one-sided beatdowns and thats it.
I think it was a publishing problem. The end of Hardcore was the 50th issue of the ongoing series, so I suspect thats why the whole story seems forcd and rushed. Had they been able to go to whatever issue they desired, perhaps the story would have been better conceived and realized, but as it stands, its a slight fizzle after three books of incredible set up. Hardcore, in the end, just comes off as the silly, predictable comics that the rest of the run refused to be.
How do you kill a man without fear?.......2003-11-22
This five part storyline is even more solid proof that Brian Michael Bendis is a modern day visionary. Not since Frank Miller has anyone painted a more gritty, realistic portrait of the Man Without Fear. The last part of Bendis' long time run on the Daredevil series, Hardcore finds the blind vigilante even more popular with the people of Hell's Kitchen now that his identity has been outed, and this story contains some of the most memorable scenes and moments to happen in the pages of Daredevil in quite some time. After dueling with The Owl, we see our hero being attempted to stay at bay by Wilson Fisk who is trying to reclaim his mantle as the Kingpin of crime. Daredevil has a run in with Typhoid Mary, followed by one of the most violent and memorable fights with Bullseye that must be seen to be believed. The final battle with the Kingpin seals up this package, the conclusion of which for now (I should say forever, but this is the Marvel Universe after all) changes Daredevil forever. Bendis' knack for gritty storytelling is at his best, while the art by Alex Maleev is superb as always. Appearances by Luke Cage and Jessica Jones (from Bendis' other series Alias, no, not the TV show either) are featured here as well, and this storyline is a fine swan song for Bendis and Maleev.
Book Description
Science Fiction. Southern California -- sunny days, blue skies, neighbors on flying bicycles ... ghostly submarines ... mermen off the Catalina coast ... and a vast underground sea stretching from the Pacific Ocean to the Inland Empire where Chinese junks ply an illicit trade and enormous creatures from ages past still survive. It is a place of wonder ... and dark conspiracies. A place rife with adventure - if one knows where to look for it. Two such seekers are the teenagers Jim Hastings and his friend, Giles Peach. Giles was born with a wonderful set of gills along his neck and insatiable appetite for reading. Drawing inspiration from the novels of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Giles is determined to build a Digging Leviathan. Will he reach the center of the earth? or destroy it in the process?

First of a new style of literature.......2003-01-22
I first read this book in the mid 80's, and it made me a Blaylock fan for life. I had never read anything like it, and can count on my fingers the books of this style I have read since (why couldn't Blaylock be a little more prolific?). Apparently, this book was completely misunderstood by his Balumnia (i.e. Elfin ship, etc.) publisher (Del Ray) forcing him to turn to other houses to get it published. I am grateful he was so persistent.
A young boy with gills and webbed fingers builds a digging machine to travel to the center of the earth. The machine is much like the many complex devices constructed by preteen inventors who are disapointed that the laws of physics didn't bend to their wills. But this boy is different...
A must-read!.......1999-02-24
The only copy of this book that I've stumbled across is the one I own ... And I've read it 4 times in as many years!
Not only, as the other reviewers here describe, is The Digging Leviathan a rollicking, post-mystical romp through a Los Angeles of indeterminate timeframe, it is also an eloquent and beautifully rendered story. Blaylock's great power as a writer, in addition to the fantastic situations he has dreamed up in this novel (his best, in my opinion, and I've read them all now!), comes from his grace as a stylist of prose. There are imagistic moments in this book on the level of Gabriel Garcia-Marquez that will bring tears to your eyes.
As well, his characters, although uniformly eccentric, are lifelike & believable, sympathetic & empathetic in their relationships with each other. The under-emphasized relationship between young Jim, the book's protagonist, and his purportedly crazy father is subtle and wonderful. This novel reinvigorated my taste for fantasy after a lapse of many years ... Get it! Read it!
highly recommended.......1999-01-02
James P Blaylock's 'Digging Leviathan' is a superb book, one of the best I've ever read in my life, a sometimes frenzied, sometimes somber race between mad scientists, good (William Hastings and young Giles Peach) and evil (the abominable Hilario Frosticos). Mr. Blaylock loves to constantly blur the lines--Is Hastings really crazy? Do the machines work by science or by Peach's will? And how did those dog droppings appear in the yard?) Most of Mr Blaylock's books have a similar theme; a good-hearted anyman (William Hastings, Walt Stebbins), usually with the help of family or friends (Blake Society, Trigimestus Club) must confront and defeat vile evil (Frosticos, Ignacio Narbondo) on the edges of a society that never knows what it was saved from. In DigLev, Hastings must confront his own fears and flaws in order to rescue the innocent Peach, stop Frosticos, and save us all from catastrophe. If you can find this book, read it.
A DELIRIOUS LITERARY FANTASY.......1998-06-18
In brief: Young Jim Hastings, his eccentric father William, his bookish uncle Edward and his best friend Giles (who has webbed fingers and vestigial gills), become involved with an odd collection of poets, madmen and explorers in a frantic race through (and under) Los Angeles, seeking a way to the center of the hollow(!) earth. If you have read Blaylock's later novels this wild, funny, gentle, occasionally dark valentine to all our silliest and noblest pulp dreams may surprise you. Ostensibly set in Southern California, it actually takes place in a kind of book-lover's fantasy world: ALL the protagonists are eccentric, bookish, single males, whether bachelor, widower or prepubescent boy. None of the characters seem to have a job (except the terrifying Dr. Hilario Frosticos, who runs an insane asylum). This lack of real world attachments gives the book a refreshing purity: these dilettantes, pseudo-scholars, poets and madmen have nothing to do but pursue, and be pursued by, their magnificent obsessions, which include immortality (literary and otherwise), merman hunting, miraculous inventions (the eponymous machine, antigravity), and attempts to encourage amphibious habits in mice. Blaylock's writing has since become more assured, his characters more real, his themes more mature, but there is a crazy joy in this book, and a lyrical beauty that charms me silly every time. This is a book about dreamers, for dreamers. If you grew up reading Edgar Rice Burroughs and Jules Verne, seek out THE DIGGING LEVIATHAN but be warned: it may break your heart. I leave a little piece of mine inside everytime I read it.

Great cooking recipes.......2006-09-03
Another fabulous cookbook by my favorite southern cooking author. I've already tried a recipe and it was a huge hit with my family. PS -- They don't particulary like grits.
Real South Carolina low country cooking .......2006-08-10
This is a terrific guide to real southern good food, centering around grits and, of course, shrimp. The truth is that grits are very closely related to polenta, and they can be great. This book is a terrific guide to good grits & good shrimp as they are eaten in the South. I am a California inhabitent myself, but this food is good. The receipes also are not too complicated and good for family or guests.
A dish born in South Carolina and elevated to new heights.......2006-07-04
Nathalie Dupree's Shrimp & Grits Cookbook presents a dish born in South Carolina and elevated to new heights. Authors Nathalie Dupree and Marion Sullivan reviewed the most famous and the most cherished recipes for shrimp and grits to cull out the best for a cookbook which even covers what kind of pan to use. Another plus: recipes come from top lowcountry chefs, are paired with color photos, and include plenty of variety, from Goat Cheese, Basil and Shrimp Timbales to Shrimp and Grits with Country Ham and Red-Eye Gravy and Quick Tomato-Bacon Shrimp and Grits.

Billy Idol a visual documentary.......2003-06-23
Awesome book, I recommend this book to any Idol fan. I laughed through most of the book. Billy has quotes throughout the book that are great.
A Visual Documentary.......2002-01-03
This book is a MUST for Fans & those even mildly interested by those who have enjoyed the cartoon-ish punk. It's not a traditional book, more that it's CHOCKED full o' rare pics & little facts. From his birth & influences to the 'Charmed Life' album era to his almost fatal motorcycle accident(crica '91) of that album's prophetic title, you learn little tidbits that might give quite a chuckle or two.
This is a great coffee table book for persuing with many quotes from Mr. Idol. Especially not too familiar with his previous work w/ Generation X(or punk legends Chelsea). This also gives people background who may have only seen him in films such as Oliver Stone's 'The Doors' , his bfief cameo in 'Mad Dog Time' , Adam Sandler's 'The Wedding Singer' or doing voice work for character ODIN in the animated sequel 'Heavy Metal 2000'(featuring Penthouse Pet/B-Movie Queen Julie Strain).
A Good piece of pop work done by Mike Wrenn is reccomended, especially since it is out of print!
