4 out of 5 stars An enjoyable experiment in writing.......2006-04-19

This novel was enjoyable to read. Each of the twelve writers takes a family member and tells the story of a daughter's engagement through through their eyes. The story flows together pretty well, except for the piece written by Henry James. I thought it bogged down there, and the tone was much too somber compared with the rest of the book. However, you can easily skim over that chapter and still understand the plot. I'm glad I read this book.

              Book Description

It is a generation after the fall of Camelot. The legendary figures of Britain’s brief but shining renaissance—Arthur, Lancelot, Guinevere—are gone but not forgotten. Their memories live on in song and story. But Arthur’s dream of a united Britain is fading fast. The hard-won alliance of independent kingdoms is fracturing. Sensing weakness, defeated enemies are returning.

Such is the world of Tristan, Prince of Lyonesse. Born with the soul of a poet and the heart of a warrior, Tristan has been pushed aside by his uncle, Markion, who is determined to succeed King Constantine. Because he shares Markion’s dream of restoring the faded glory of Camelot, Tristan supports his Uncle’s claims to the High King’s throne, against the better judgment of his friends.

Markion dispatches Tristan as his trusted agent to fetch his new bride, the daughter of King Percival. As soon as Tristan sets his eyes on the beautiful Essylte, and Essylte sees the handsome Tristan, a fateful love blooms between the two young people, a love that knows no law but its own fierce and imperious demands. Now, torn between duty and desire, Tristan and Essylte will risk everything—their lives, their souls, Britain itself—to be together. . . .

This powerful tale of love, betrayal, and redemption has echoed down the ages. Acclaimed author Nancy McKenzie brings it stunningly to life for a new generation.

4 out of 5 stars You may not understand this review if you don't know the story told within.......2006-05-17

I don't know why, but I tend to get stuck on some stories and search for every book written about them. I obsess over Elizabeth I's relationship with Robert Dudley, faithfully search out tales about and of Sharazard, and lately, I want to know everything about Tristan and Isolde. That's why I picked this book.

This is the story of doomed young love. Tristan, a young knight whose birthright to the high throne of Britain was taken by his Uncle (with his help actually, he gave it up) is sent by the same Uncle (Mark) to fetch his bride from Wales. She is fifteen and will marry over forty Mark. Her name is Esselte.

Of course-you know the story. This is a pretty good re-telling of it but for a few details-the poisoned sword wound that Tristan received is just stupidly healed and treated. Tristan has a gay Uncle (nothing wrong with that) who lends nothing to the story but pops up now and then. Esselte's mother is absurd in her hatred of Esselte and Branwen's actions-she delivered the love potion to our lovers and then agrees to sleep with Mark secretly in Esselte's place-are confusing.

This book has also fallen to a classic mistake that comes with retelling this story. Mark of Cornwall is stupid, mean and downright evil at times. This is supposed to be a triangle of love, respect and duty between a devoted nephew, a wife doing her duty and a king. Instead Tristan constantly bemoans that he cannot save Esselte from the evil Mark. Clearly he could have at any time. His excuse of it taking down the British alliance is stupid-Mark's own actions in this book cause that.

In short the romance in this book is far better than in the other version I read recently, the White Raven by Diana L. Paxton, who focused solely on Branwen's tale. But it's still not very romantic. This book is also far better than Rosalind Miles series-which I'm sorry but was so boring I almost died.

I have to say that the recent movie did a far better job of making three likable characters for the triangle, and the dialog was perfect-not too sappy romantic stuff-but real words from people in a horribly desperate situation.

On its own this book gets 3.5 stars, but I'm still looking for a novel retelling of this story I can love. Who knows, maybe I'll just write it myself.

2 out of 5 stars Never approaches the glory of her previous books.......2006-02-18

Queen of Camelot is one of my favorite pieces of modern Arthurian fiction- I absolutely loved it. Though I actually prefer how the story was originally published, as two separate books ( The Child Queen and The High Queen) which were later consolidated into one volume and some slight changes made.

I therefore was prepared to love this book, as the tale of Tristan and Isolde is one of my favorites. I can't even begin to explain how very disappointed I was as I struggled through this book.

It literally was a struggle to finish. I think the crucial difference is that in Queen of Camelot you truly get to know the characters- they have depth, and life, and you feel as though you know them personally and become very invested in what happens to them. In Prince of Dreams, that depth is very much lacking. She skips from place to place and shoots forward in time so often than you never feel as though you are watching them live their lives; you're just skimming through a summary.

Which is why, to me and obviously to others, Essylte often comes across as a whiner. I didn't care about her because I knew virtually nothing about her- she was just a shell, and her problems didn't touch me at all. The children (who are arguably the biggest victims of circumstance) are treated very dismissively, so it's hard to care about them either. Tristan has a bit more warmth and depth and we spend more time with him, but he doesn't manage to save the book as his nature- self-destructiveness and all- isn't explored and he generally ends up coming across as just being selfish.

The only real interest stirred in me at all was caused by Branwen, Essylte's maid (among other things); I spent a good portion of the book anticipating her next move and wondering what surprises she might have in store that might not necessarily follow traditional tellings of the story.

All in all, a very disappointing read from an author I expected greater things from. I'm sure that many people will be able to read and enjoy it, but after the richness and depth of Queen of Camelot, this book falls far short of my expectations.

5 out of 5 stars A Fresh New Perspective on Tristan & Essylte!.......2004-03-15

It would seem the story of Tristan and Essylte would be a much told, tired story by now. However, this author puts some new twists on the old legend and breathes life into its characters. The fates are against these two lovers from the beginning but they try to make a valiant showing throughout the book. Essylte's maidservant, Branwen, is not what she seems and she brings about many of the circumstances Essylte and Tristan endure. King Markion, who is now high king of Britain is Tristan's uncle and wishes to wed the Welsh Princess to bring unity to Britain. Unfortunately, his scope is very limited and Tristan and many others only support him because there is no one better to do so. Except for Tristan, of course, however, he does not desire the high kingship, only Essylte, someone he is never destined to have.

It is a wild ride with much intrigue and many interesting twists that will keep the reader enthralled from beginning to end. I highly recommend this novel to anyone interested in "The Matter of Britain."

3 out of 5 stars Destruction in slow motion..........2004-03-13

Don't get me wrong. Nancy McKenzie's prose evokes a distant time. You can hear the storm pounding against the castle walls, smell the blood of Saxon battles, and feel the anguish in Tristan's heart as he longs for a woman he loves but cannot have. And yet...despite the beauty of the language and the vivid characters, I felt a mounting frustration with the doomed Tristan and Esseulte.

These are not an English set of Romeo and Juliet. The Shakespearean lovers only destroyed one other person besides themselves. Tristan and Esseulte manage to destroy friends, family, unborn babies, and kingdoms by their obsession with each other. They refuse to give the other up despite numerous separations, yet neither one will sacrifice all their supposed obligations to other people to be together. It is this refusal to totally commit that involves others in their destructive orbit. Tristan comes off as poetically self-destructive while Esseulte whines.

If you like your romances large in scope and filled with doomed lovers, then you may enjoy this book. Otherwise, it may be an exercise in screaming frustration.

              5 out of 5 stars Heart-wrenching.......2004-02-17

The tale of Tristan and Essylte - a beautiful but tragic love story. This is sort of the Romeo and Juliet of ancient Briton.
I know the story mainly from the books by R. Miles - but Nancy McKenzie has a style of writing that is second-to-none. She spins a new twist on the story and ties it beautifully to her earilier book "Grail Prince". I couldn't put this down - the descriptions of their feelings for each other - their love - their desperation - their heart-wrenching separations and breath-taking reunions...McKenzie takes you there. You feel it with them and if you've ever been in love you feel it with every beautifully woven detail of the story. McKenzie continues to craft masterful works centered around the Arthurian legends and this one certainly did not disappoint!

The rift in the fabric of space was fast approaching the Well World, and time was running out. If the Well World were destroyed, the entire universe would disappear like a blown-out candle. But the squabbling forces on the planet weren't going to let the impending doomsday stop them from having a serious war. Troops all over the planet were gathering for the final battle. Nathan Brazil and Mavra Chang somehow had to reach the Well of Souls in time to save the universe and before any of the hostile natives managed to kill them. At best, a difficult mission. At worst, impossible -- especially since there was a price on Brazil's head and many would-be claimants! So Nathan Brazil decided that the simplest way to reach the Well of Souls was to be killed. The enemy would find that he was much more dangerous dead than he had ever been alive . . .

                5 out of 5 stars Book 5: Capstone of a classic series........1998-06-04

The myriad stories begun throughout the series are brought together here, as plot-threads you didn't know existed are revealed and then woven together (and none of them are dissatisfying cheap tricks, either). Many questions are answered, but not all of them.

The scope of the finish here is the biggest I can remember, and the poignacy of the end is distinct from the triumph or anti-climax at the end of many other major science fiction tales.

I've read this entire series four or five times completely, and it was worth it every time.

This is the first in the series that I have read, but unlike most series novels the history and characters are well explained thus able to comprehend the situations.Brazil the perfect hero is not the classic hero as he uses deceit and other human prows to achive his goals. It is noted that a lot of classical work shows the hero as a moral,'justice for all',... character while true human nature of corruption and other and philosophy that the ends justify the means are ignored.Such greats as Alexander The Great have employed ruthless methods and it is seen that Brazil is the same.As conclusion compared to classic good versus evil and pure fantasy fiction this novel is a work of art.

5 out of 5 stars The best Well World novel yet!!.......1998-04-16

I have to say the Twilight is in my opinion the best Well World novel that has been written. It brings back my favorite character, Nathan Brazil, and it also explains more about the history of the Well and even why Nathan Brazil was really left as a Guardian. I thought that it also incorporated some good villians and and subplots and left a very big opening for many new Well World novels. All in all, I say it is a very good book and a must have.

4 out of 5 stars Back cover summary.......2007-04-07

The rift in the fabric of space was fast approaching the Well World, and time was running out. Troops all over the planet were gathering for the final battle.

Nathan Brazil and Mavra Chang somehow had to reach the Well of Souls in time to save the universe and before any of the hostile natives managed to kill them.

At best, a difficult mission. At worst, impossible--especially since there was a price on Brazil's head and many would-be claimants! For Brazil, the difficult was but the work of a moment--the impossible would take a little longer!

1 out of 5 stars Book title is misleading.......2004-06-01

Based on the title, Classic Knits from the 1930s-1960s, I was expecting more traditional patterns with classic lines. The book should be titled, "Mostly '60s" or something like that. I was only able to judge this book by the photo on the cover (ha! remember the old saying), so I thought I would be getting lots of classic, un-trendy patterns. Instead, most of the women's patterns are exaggerated 1960s wonders. However, the men's patterns are classic and might be worth your while. If you have subscribed to Vogue Knitting magazine over the past 15 years, you will already have most of the patterns. Silly me, I thought the editor of this book would have had the imagination to publish other patterns from the original Vogue Knitting instead of being lazy.

2 out of 5 stars Not a lot of stylish patterns.......2003-02-18

If you really want a great book on stylish vintage knits, I'd suggest you buy Sarah Dallas' Vintage Knits. The patterns there were more form fitting. The patterns in the Vogue book were a little uninspiring -- they were patterns that you could pretty much find elsewhere. But it's an okay book for beginners and intermediate knitters.

3 out of 5 stars Good book, but I would rather check antique book stores.......2002-06-03

I bought this book because I liked "Very Easy Knit" , so I kind of expected the similar effectiveness. However, to me, it was not as good as "Very Easy Knit". The book seems to loose its focus, since it attempts to cover too board catagory; babies, men, teeneger. It may be good for somebody who has a family to knit, but if you are big fan of vintage knitting patterns, I do not think this book offers variety. The patterns themselves are good, a good book. But, still I would rather check local antique book stores for old Vougue's originals from this era. ( it has much more patterns in one volume, just much more !)

4 out of 5 stars Good, With One Little Caveat.......2002-01-18

I really like this book, but I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because, surprisingly, several of the patterns can actually be found in other Vogue books (e.g., the silk lined shawl, men's cashmere gloves). The repeat was a bit disconcerting, and I would have rather seen something else, since I have almost the complete Vogue Knitting library.

However, the book has many, many excellent points, which make it a worthwhile purchase, even if you've seen a few of the patterns before. First, Vintage Collection is designed very well, with all of VKs usual features and inspiring photographs. Patterns are grouped by type: women, men, kids, and scarves/shawls. Unlike VK's Vintage Knits On the Go, the Collection contains patterns that truly speak for their era and will lend a vintage touch to everyone's wardrobe.

The variety of designs is astounding, including a coat, an aran sweater, the gorgeous cashmere cabled sweater on the cover, sweet baby things, as well as a silk lined shawl... and many, many more.

                                                    Book Description

Porcelain is prized for its vivid whiteness, but it has always posed particular problems for the ceramicist using it. In Contemporary Studio Porcelain, Peter Lane provides a strong history and celebration of the development of porcelain at the turn of the new millennium. He gives particular consideration to the technical achievements, working practices, and aesthetic concerns of ceramicists who work with this most popular medium and its close relative, bone china.

The international group of artists featured in this book demonstrates the confidence and versatility found in contemporary porcelain, resulting in a breathtaking look at the exciting and innovative work that is currently being done internationally in this field.

Contemporary Studio Porcelain presents a wide diversity of porcelain objects that will both inspire and enthrall. This classic work, now substantially revised, is a must not only for any potter working in porcelain but also for collectors of fine ceramics.

                                                    Book Description

Structure as Design is a unique exploration of the way designers use the necessary structural elements of a building as a part of its interior design. Edgy, intriguing, and modern, each of these interiors adopts industrial building materials or the physical structure of the building—support beams, heating and ventilation systems, partitions, fenestration—as interior design elements.

Includes 225 full-color photographs as well as plans and detailed drawings

Examples include the work of Finish architect Riema Pietola, who uses concrete to great effect in the Cavela Church, and Toy Ito's use of punched metal on his Tower of Winds in Japan.

Off The Rails is Rudy Sarzo's offering about his life with Ozzy Osbourne's Blizzard Of Ozz band that toured in 1981 and 1982. The guitarist in this band (Randy Rhoads) is the primary focus of the story telling, and that is a real gift for all fans of his short life. At times, this book is impossible to put down. Rudy does a good job explaining the mundane life of a traveling musician mixed with the excitement of playing with such a prolific musician as Rhoads. Any info regarding the short life of Randy Rhoads is interesting , but at times, the stories are very compelling. The chapters about the live album, Ozzy's abuse towards Sharon, and Randy's final days, are all right up there with The Dirt, and many other great books that humanize these icons. Good job Rudy Sarzo.

Great book for any fan of Randy Rhoads. It's great, after all of these years, to hear stories about my hero. Randy made me want to play guitar, and this book means so much to me. Rudy is a great story teller. By the end of the book you'll feel like you knew Randy too, which hurts because we all know how the story ends.

                                                      Book Description

Rock and roll will never die and neither will the legend of Ozzy Osbourne. In the 30 years he has spent behind the microphone, Ozzy has built a legacy that will never be surpassed in the music industry. From his stellar days with the influential Black Sabbath to his solo career, there are few heavy metal artists that even come close to bolstering a record like Ozzy’s. At the age of 53, Ozzy now finds himself as popular as ever, starring in his own TV show -- the MTV reality show The Osbournes that attracted 8 million viewers in the U.S. for its first season -- as well as hosting the Ozzfest, an annual tour of heavy metal heavyweights which draws millions of fans throughout the United States and Europe. The book presents the Ozzy we have all grown to know in recent years through his most personal medium: his songs. Every classic Sabbath song as well as each of Ozzy’s solo hits are put under the microscope, giving the reader a view of Ozzy that few have ever before seen: that of an intelligent, caring, and brilliant songwriter. 120 color and black-and-white photographs are included in this intimate look at the lyrics behind the most notorious man in rock and roll history. Also discussed are the alcohol and drug-fueled controversies in Ozzy’s career such as his infamous on-stage antics, death-defying addiction, and numerous troubles with the law, including an attempted murder charge involving his longtime wife, Sharon. Some say his music has the power to inspire, others say it leads to suicide. Either way one thing is for sure: On or off stage, there will never be another Ozzy.

2 out of 5 stars This "Diary" Really, Really Shouldn't Be Read.......2005-09-28

As a writer whose major influence has always been the writings of Ozzy Osbourne, I decided to buy this book, to learn about the stories behind the classics. I was elated to see the many photos the book contains-many of which that are rarities-but as for the book itself, I was disappointed greatly.

First, I should mention that the stories for Ozzy's earlier work are inaccurate. Back in 2002, Bob Daisley started a feud with Ozzy over lost royalties. Daisley made many remarks about the music, including that he was the sole writer of nearly every Ozzy song from his first three albums, including the classic song "Suicide Solution" (Daisley claimed he wrote the song specifically about Ozzy's alcoholism, while Ozzy contends that it was written about Bon Scott, of AC/DC fame). The writer of this book used faulty information for most of Ozzy's solo career; the above was only one example of the book's errors. The book, itself, was written in 2002.

Sadly, the book is also very incomplete. There are no stories whatsoever for the "Ultimate Sin" album-the book claims that there aren't many stories on it. That's still no excuse for not including any known facts about it. Most of the book is full of stories that everyone already knows (Ozzy fans-why was "Goodbye to Romance" written? How did Randy Rhoads die?) while it lacks depth in the so-called "unknown stories," filling up many passages with stories of the dove & bat decapitations and miscellaneous other well-worn tales. What's worse, many of the classics aren't even discussed in detail. I was hoping to read about the writing of "Waiting for Darkness" but I came up disappointed, as this book only mentions it in a sentence or two.

Overall, this book is dreadful and a huge waste of money. If you want to see the many pictures it contains, go for it. But if you want to know about the real stories, save your money and make guesses. In comparison, they just might be accurate.

5 out of 5 stars A great look at Sabbath and Ozzy.......2004-09-14

Diary of a Madman is a must have book for any Sabbath/Ozzy fan. Carol Clark takes you through "Black Sabbath" all the way to "Down to Earth" highlighting all the important band events along the way while providing interesting information on all the important Ozzy/Sabbath songs. This book is a easy and fascinating read. Even if your a die hard Ozzy/Sabbath fan you will still find many interesting tidbits in this coffe table book. It also contains a GREAT selection of pictures!

3 out of 5 stars Best for the rare Sabbath pix.......2003-02-24

One thing that needs to mentioned is the rarity of the Black Sabbath pictures included. I've been a Sabbath collector for years, and have not seen most of the pictures included--live, backstage, and photo-shoot settings. Many of them are of Tony Iommi (Ozzy's arch-enemy of old), as it happens.
As far as the actual commentary on the songs, in this subject matter it is hard to tell what is truly legitimate. Manipulated statements and entirely invented statements abound in the music journalism industry, so you have to take that at face value. Some comments attributed to Ozzy are rather articulate (not his style), and therefore one would have to wonder if they are really his own.
There is one GLARING mistake in the pictures which tends to sap the already-low credibility from a publication of this sort: a photo of Brad Gillis (brief Ozzy guitarist) is next to a photo of Dave Spitz (brief Sabbath bassist), and the caption below them reads something to the effect of "Brad Gillis was replaced by Jake E. Lee", implying that the photo of Dave Spitz is really Jake E. Lee (which is strange since Dave is clearly holding a bass guitar!).
This book is great for the rare old pictures, but it is still nothing more than one of a million books of questionable accuracy put together by bandwagon-jumping "authors" who most likely have little idea of who or what they're talking about and are trying to cash in on a current fad.

5 out of 5 stars Good Things Come in Glossy Packages........2003-02-19

First and foremost, this book is a glossy, photo-packed, coffee-table tome. I originally purchased it because I was hoping for in-depth, analytical breakdowns of Ozzy's songs by himself and his band members. I didn't quite get it.

While there are plenty of Ozzy, Sabbath and other quotes, they're pretty much the same ones we've been hearing for years. It also only covers Ozzy's hit standards (i.e. Crazy Train, War Pigs, NIB). None of my favorites were covered, but I can't blame the author for that, I suppose. It also covered the infamous (and so, so tired) stories of the bat, the Alamo, the doves.

The saving grace of this book is the photos. It's absolutely overflowing with awesome pics of Ozzy, Sabbath, Randy Rhoads, Zakk Wylde and other band members. A lot of these photos are pretty rare, and I'm sure some of them are never-before-seen.

It's not too shabby in the writing department either. Clerk is a lucid and fun author, and the format of the book is very eye-catching. The pages are multi-colored, the title fonts are trippy, and in every chapter, there's a paragraph that has been written backwards and upside down faintly apparent in the background (a shoutout to all those who believe in subliminal messages). The editors did an outstanding job of making it enjoyable to read, but not silly and overloaded with visuals.

Price is very good, and the book isn't a disappointment for what it is. I'm very pleased with it. An essential for any Ozzy fan.

Unlike the only other reviewer of this product, who i think may have been mistaken about which product he was reviewing, I found nothing at all humorous about this MUSIC BOOK. It is an impressively accurate songbook of the album Diary of a Madman. Randy Rhoads, the guitarist on Ozzy's first two solo albums (the other one being Blizzard of Ozz) was quite a virtuoso and his style influenced many as he successully wove his classical influences into Heavy Metal. Along with Eddie Van Halen, he is one of the first guitarists to popularize the two-hand tapping technique, as most famously demonstrated on Blizzard's "Crazy Train" or as transcribed here in the solo to "Flying High Again." It is not possible to transcribe every single sound evoked from the guitar (on "Believer" it notes that random scrapes and various sounds are produced), but this book comes as close as can be expected. Students of classical guitar will find the title track to be of interest for study as it is the most classically influenced of Rhoads's work with Ozzy.

This book offers a funny review of Ozzy Osbourne's life, from the very beginning of his career till some years ago. You cant's expect a masterpiece, but it's easy reading and offers some funny moments.

Mick Wall, writer of the Iron Maiden official biography "RUN TO THE HILLS", wrote this book back in 1985, and it is totally out of print by now... It's a good book, not even near the best rock biography ever written, but it does the job. It has very good photos and it gives a good general frame of Ozzy's career up to that point. In this age of Internet, all the information contained here could be obtained without buying the book.

I got this book in the late 80's and I'm glad I bought it when I did, because it is damn hard to find. Mick Wall spends almost equal time for Ozzy's Sabbath years and his solo years(up to The Ultimate Sin). He also goes into Ozzy's childhood with quotes, a few pictures, and interviews that would be hard to find anywhere else. Lots of Sabbath and Blizzard photos too. All the usual Ozzy stories like pissing on the alamo, biting head off dove, plus a few others you might not have heard. All in all a great book if your an Ozzy/Sabbath fan.
