Book Description
“All rising to great place is by a winding stair,” wrote Sir Francis Bacon. It wasn’t until he was 45 that Bacon’s feet found the first step on that staircase, when King James I made him Solicitor-General, from where he rose through the ranks to become Lord Chancellor. Many accounts of the life of Sir Francis Bacon have been written for scholars, but du Maurier’s aim was to paint a vivid portrait of this remarkable man for the common reader. In The Winding Stair, she illuminates the considerable achievements of this Renaissance man as a writer, lawyer, philosopher, scientist, and politician. Dame Daphne du Maurier wrote more than 25 acclaimed novels, short stories, and plays, including Rebecca and The House on the Strand. She was also a passionate and skillful biographer.

More with each re-reading.......2006-03-26
Along with Initiate Brother, Gatherer of Clouds is a book I regularly re-read. It gives me joy each time. Vivid characters, great story, memorable vignettes and more than a little wisdom make it a great read.
The central religion of Wa, Botahism, is obviously based on Buddhism. The more my knowledge of Buddhism increases, the more soundly based Sean Russell's depiction seems.
Gatherer of Clouds.......2005-07-06
Wonderful sequel for Initiate Brother. It continued the character development and suspense of Part 1, but also had more pessimism.
Wonderful!.......2001-05-05
One of the finest books I have ever read. Make sure to start with the first one first, and then go on the sequel.
Just to warn/entice those who may have read some of Russell's other works first -- these two books are written by a warm inviting Russell, while his other books are written by a cold, cynical, sarcastic person. (Guess which I prefer.) So even if you did not care for Russell's other works, please give these a try.
Best writer I have seen in a long time!.......2001-03-12
This is a real treat for those who love to read! The first book, and this one is a great story, the witing style is smooth as silk, and the characters are not only interesting, and likeable, but believable to boot! I actually shed tears in public while reading this book, I couldn't put it down. Wonderful, enchanting, and totally satisfying read!
Moving conclusion to "The Initiate Brother"........2001-02-06
This two volume story is elegant, moving, and fun. The monk, Shuyun, comes to be spiritual advisor to the Shonto family. From there, we have intrigue with the emperor, a barbarian invasion, complex politics, wild battles, and an elegant fictionalized China, complete with lovely poetry. In this volume, we have a running battle with a huge barbarian army, as the Shonto family is caught between the emperor and the barbarians. The brother Shuyun is caught between his duties and a woman, in a very satisfying love story. Excellent story.

Oas. A city in the middle of a great desert, yet blessed with an abundance of water. This water is coaxed out of the skies by the Gatherers, an ancient guild of pilots who use barely understood technology to seed the clouds. The rain they bring is collected in Oas' grand system of fountains and distributed throughout the city. When Oas' Caliph dies suddenly, a new Caliph is augured-a young and not very responsible Gatherer named Haran. Only a teenager, Haran finds himself thrust into a new world of court intrigue, politics, servants and betrayal. His Vizier thinks himself Caliph, and is willing to kill for the title. In the Caliph's almost forgotten harem, Haran meets and falls in love with Qeemah. Her love forces him to question his path in life-whether to continue on as a puppet of the Vizier or to return to the honorable life as a Gatherer? But when Oas' neighboring city, Entana, loses its only source of water, its Sultan demands that Oas surrender the Gatherers and their technology to him for Entana's use. War looms, and Haran is faced with the awesome responsibility of being Caliph not only in name, but in deed. Confronting the Sultan's army-and the skein of betrayal that brings it to Oas-Haran must decide if he is Gatherer or Caliph.or both.

Simple, Clean Fun!.......2003-01-25
In 1958, when I was eight years old, my older cousin was cleaning out his bookcase as I played solitaire on his bed. "Here," He said, handing me a paperback. "you like this kind of stuff". It was an Ace double novel - "Two Complete Novels, 35 cents". One side was Doomsday Eve, by Robert Moore Williams (forgettable), and the other was Three to Conquer. What impressed me most about this novel was the character development. The hero was not your ordinary lantern-jawed he-man type prevalent at the time; Wade Harper was a squat, hirsute, ape of a man who was contrary enough to have a job developing instruments to manipulate the very small. Oh yeah, he also read minds, which is the catalyst for the story. The plot is simple Bodysnatchers fare, the good guys are good and the bad guys lethal, and you can read it in one evening. I still do. What more can you ask?
Alien conquerors versus a single human telepath.......1997-11-30
As usually, E.F. Russell has created an excellent scanario with three aliens dressed as humans and only one man who can stop them. Wade Harper, a telepath, needs all his wit, wisdom and inspiration not only to stop the conquerors from enslaving all humans but also to keep his little telepathic secret for himself. A must for every true SF lover. I've bought two copies just to be sure to find at least one if I feel the urge to read it again (every year or so).
Microscopic aliens take over astronauts. Only one man Knows.......1997-11-13
Our Hero is able to see the surface thoughts of others. Its been more of a hassle than a gift, Who wants to know that the guy next to you wants a hamburger or has an itch? Then one day he passes a hideous (sic?) alien intelligence wearing a human body. If he goes to the government with what he knows and HOW he knows it, they're likely to disect HIM to figure out how he works!!! Killer The realistic attitude and sense of humor of the hero has to be experienced to be believed! I read this about 10 years ago and can't remember the character's name. I wish I had never loaned this one out! (ie. gone!)

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book for anyone interested in psychic phenomena.......2006-01-25
I'm interested in psychic phenomena and this book offers insight, emotion, recommendations and best of all, a lovable person's life-purpose journey for helping others. Jane is personal - like a long-lost close friend catching up with you through the pages. Her insights and lessons are not unlike those of many great psychologists, parapsychologists, philosophers and spiritual teachers. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to experience a great true story and anyone interested in psychic phenomena.
If you think you've had a psychic experience - this is the book for you!.......2006-01-25
I can't say enough about this book or its author! This book takes you on a journey that steps into another realm of understanding, boardening one's own potential and ultimately drawing you into the mysteries of life that are still unfolding before us. In an age that seems like we've done it all, seen it all and know it all, the personal psychic journey of Jane Doherty gives others courage to explore this facinating new frontier of human experience. If you've had an experience that you don't understand, or one that causes a conflict with your personal beliefs or shakes your soul to the core, then this is a "MUST READ" for you. Of all the books I've read by sensitives, this one was not only about the journey but also of the lessons along the way. Jane shares a most intimate story that is not always an easy one to share - but one of growth and the acceptance of a precious gift that each of us possesses, if we can only find the courage to develop it.
I'm awake!.......2005-12-08
Jane Doherty has a brilliant way of writing exactly what you need to hear. She is not only giving you keys to unlock your own purpose in life, but she is telling her very own personal story. You follow her journey and skepticism all the way through her experiences with meeting her guides, connecting with relatives on the spiritual plane, etc. It is a step by step book, acknowledging dreams, visions, your "minds eye", and other psychic ability. Not only that, but she is aware that every human has the ability to tap into their psychic ability. Basically everyone has intuition, but why do or don't you listen to it? And who is sending these messages? Your questions will be answered in this book. She talks about meditation and relaxation, how to find self-love, and how important patience is. This book has everything! You will find that upon setting down the book, you might even have your own "experience"!!! I know I have! I cannot imagine anyone interested in the paranormal, or spiritual phenomenon giving anything but praise to this book. Every chapter ends with her "Insights" that recap what she has learned, and things for "us" to learn or think about. This book is one of the best I've ever read! Thanks Jane!
Unlike any other..............2005-12-08
This is an amazing book, unlike any other you've read. Jane is incredibly gifted and also generous. She teaches you step by step how to open up your mind/energy in a very detailed and descriptive way, and then how to go deeper. Simultaneously, you'll share her own experiences and can compare the sensations and your own reactions to what you are feeling. Also, at the end of each chapter, there are further exercises you can do. Each part of this book is fantastic and very special. I read A LOT of metaphysical material, and have never read a book so complete, detailed and generous with information (general information about psychic work as well as personal information about Jane herself). I have also had the pleasure recently of a personal reading with Jane, and it was a warm, moving, loving, amazing experience. I cannot say enough great things about Jane and this book, as well as anything in this world that she undertakes.
Jane is the truth!.......2005-06-05
Jane Doherty is the real deal and she shows you how to open the psychic within yourself. This book will help you to realize that there is a psychic within all of us just waiting to be acknowledge. Jane Doherty is the truth!

Book Description
That a Jew living in Nazi Berlin survived the Holocaust at all is surprising. That he was a homosexual and a teenage leader in the resistance and yet survived is amazing. But that he endured the ongoing horror with an open heart, with love and without vitriol, and has written about it so beautifully is truly miraculous. This is Gad Beck’s story.
Customer Reviews:
could have been better, but still a basically interesting story .......2007-08-12
Here's the story: gay Jew (really a half-Jew under Nazi racial law) survives Holocaust in Berlin, despite spending lots of time risking his life by helping ferry other Jews to safety in Switzerland. I didn't find this book as enthralling as I had hoped; either the writing style or the translation left something to be desired. In particular, the last half of the book read like a laundry list of lovers and rescued friends. (Unlike another reviewer, I actually liked the pre-Holocaust half of the book better).
Having said that, I still learned something from this book; I got a real sense of the differences between "full Jews" and persons of mixed blood. Full Jews typically got deported to concentration camps, no ifs, ands or buts. But if the experience of Beck and his family is any guide, half-Jews stood a pretty good chance of survival if they kept their noses clean. Because Beck's mother was born Christian (though she converted to Judaism) his parents were never deported (despite numerous close calls), and Beck got in trouble with the Gestapo only because of his rescue activities.
Another interesting fact: throughout the book, Beck mentions various hunchbacks he ran into. What is it about early 20th-century Germany that produced so many hunchbacks?
Triumph of Will.......2007-05-02
Beck, Gad. "An Underground Life: Memoirs of a Gay Jew in Nazi Germany, University of Wisconsin Press, 1999.
Triumph of Will
Amos Lassen and Literary Pride
We all have a great deal of trouble understanding the Holocaust and what it did to so many people. We have been slowly getting the stories of the Nazi persecution if gays and if one was both gay and Jewish, he had real troubles. Gad Beck was a man like that but he survived and was able to tell his story as he does so eloquently in "An Underground Life". Even though his book begins slowly, it picks up pace quickly and as you read your mouth falls open to see stories about man's inhumanity to man. When the Nazis began their reign of terror he was living underground and was sought by the Gestapo. Beck was an organizer and helped many who lived illegally by finding them shelter and food as well as providing a listening ear and support in any way that he could. The fact that he was gay was secondary to the fact that he was Jewish.
In this memoir Beck brings to life both the cruelty to the Jews but the cruelty to the gays as well. This is a shocking and horrifying account as he writes about a gay man's coming of age in Nazi Germany. It is an erotic tale but also shows how love should be considered. This was probably the first time in the modern age that the gay spirit managed to triumph over intolerance and bigotry--even against the greatest crime ever against humanity.
The fact that Beck survived in itself is miraculous but even more amazing is that he was able to write about what he endured. When Robert Plant published "The Pink Triangle: The Nazi War against Homosexuals" in 1986, the door was opened to a new aspect of the Holocaust. Several personal accounts followed, but few have been published that talk about the Nazi treatment of gays ad I imagine that this is because so few survived and those that did could not think about what they had endured. This makes this book that much more valuable.
Beck's own story is unique in that he was born of a mixed marriage in 1923 to a Jewish father and a Christian mother thereby not Jewish according to strict Orthodox law. Nonetheless, the Nazis did not care--if he had a drop of Jewish blood, as far as they were concerned, he was Jewish. As the Nazi party rose to power and began their housing relocation plan, forced labor and transport to death camps, Beck organized a resistance movement to hide others and to smuggle food and drugs to them, He even once wore a Nazi uniform to rescue a doomed gay man from the camps. He does not in any way disguise his sexuality and he gives details of his own sexual liaisons. He gives us an amazing picture of the horror of Nazi rule. He was one of the fortunate gay men whom his parents loved and accepted his sexuality and was very lucky that the Christian side of his family felt the same. In 1933, when Hitler came to power, he was forced to attend a Jewish school to reinforce his identity and to be visible to the ruling party and he immersed himself in Judaism and embraced the idea of the Zionist movement. He also embraced a great many men and he hides nothing about his sex life (except for actual sexual descriptions) as well as writes openly about his secret political activities. He rose in power in the Zionist movement and became a central character in working to establish a Jewish homeland. He survived the Nazis by living illegally in Berlin. Because of that he was able to write this wonderful memoir.
This is a book that holds you from the beginning to the end, so much so that you want a sequel. He embraced his gayness at the same time that he embraced his Jewish--at a time when it meant death to be either. There are stories of betrayals and back stabbings and secret meetings and the memoir reads like a combination thriller/spy novel. That he survived s incredible and even more incredible is that he endured all that he did.
Breathtaking.......2005-05-31
Here is a memoire of life in Berlin during the Nazi regime from the perspective of a gay Jew. Gad Beck was an organizer and friend to many who lived illegally during that period, finding shelter and food and providing friendship and support. That he was openly gay was not important during that period - there were more important thiongs to worry about.
I found this book at the bookstore of National Haulocost Museum in Washington DC on a recent visit. It fits in perfectly with that museum, in that it fleshes out the life in hiding. If you have an interest in the struggle for human rights and length to which people will go to survive, this is an excellent read.
One fact that is underemphasized in the book is Beck's youth during this period. By the end of the war he was in his younger 20s. Yet he had accomplished so much and had the strength of one much older. Bravo!
It captured me the first few pages.......2002-08-14
Gad Beck brought to life not only the cruelty to the jews but also the cruelty of the gay and lesbian people of the Nazi Era. I had to do a research paper for a Holocaust in Literature class I took my junior year in high school...and I was entralled the whole time I read this book. It shocked me, it horrified me...and I loved it.
A Triumph of the Gay Spirit.......2000-05-19
Beck gives us a glimpse of a gay man's coming of age in Nazi Berlin. It is not only erotic but holds up a light by which all aspects of love should be measured. Once again, the Gay Spirit has triumphed over bigotry, intolerance, and in this case even the holocaust.

Book Description
Berlin has triumphed over its own history as a divided city to become one of the most vibrant and thrilling capitals in Europe. Entire districts have been rebuilt in only ten years, making the city a showcase of great architectural achievement.
Living in Berlin seeks out both the new and the old of Berlin's most eye-catching attractions from the fabulous eighteenth-century palace of Sans-Souci to breathtaking new buildings designed by moderns like Foster, Starck, and Gehry. This sumptuously illustrated book offers an insider's tour of the city's unique architectural and cultural heritage-and beyond, to the hidden jewels and neglected treasures of the Berlin that most travelers pass by. Living in Berlin pauses at the river and the lakes that lie at the heart of the city, and visits hidden courtyards and market squares. The classic Berlin of Kurt Weill's songs is still there; the voice of Marlene Dietrich still hangs in the smoke-filled bars-if only you know where to look! Living in Berlin also visits cutting-edge contemporary designs for living in the city; from minimalist modern settings to the organized chaos of young artists' studios. The book is completed by details on the best places for excursions and shopping trips, where to eat and where to stay, all selected by true Berliners.

A powerful look into the world of a jazz guitar master.......1999-05-26
This is much more than just a book by a well known jazz guitarist. This is a book that lets us see into the mind (and heart) of a man who has passion for music- particularly the world of jazz guitar improvisation. More than that, Bauer is the vehicle to share his deep insights into the spiritual process that are at the very essence of creativity. Thea Luba has done a book about her teacher and mentor which communicates a unique love and appreciation for the gift of music. Anyone who reads this book will come away with a deeper awareness of the nature of music itself.
A compelling story of one man's great contribution to jazz.......1999-01-28
This book is a colorful tale of one man's journey as a highly successful jazz musician, as well as a history of the idiom itself in the last fifty plus years. Readers will be attracted to Bauer's down to earth writing style and the way in which he bears all about his rich and often humorous experiences. The reader will get a sense also that this is a man who survived a fast-paced era in music which many of his contemporaries did not, and that he did it in style. Bauer's sense of humor and views of life are simultaneously reminiscient of both Yogi Bera and Emerson. It is a delightful tale of the life of a man who has done and seen much, and there is something in it for every reader to hold on to.
