            Book Description

With a great pile of packets in front of him like a peddler's pack, the harassed quartermaster was calling out the post in the middle of a regular mob of soldiers, who were all plying their elbows and trampling on one another's feet. It was just at our door, between the communal washhouse -- so tiny that there would hardly have been room for three washerwomen under its sloping shelter roof -- and the notary's house, which wore a red scarf of virginia creeper crosswise on its front. We had clambered up on the stone seat and were listening attentively.

            "Maurice Duclou, first section."

            "Killed at Courcy," cried somebody.

            "Are you sure?"

"Yes, his mates saw him fall in front of the church. . . . He'd caught a bullet. Now, . . well, I wasn't there myself."

On the corner of the envelope the quartermaster wrote in pencil, "Killed."

            "Edouard Marquette."

"He must be killed too," said a voice.

Ricordeau, who had been sitting at the entrance to the dug-out, rushed out, and without paying any heed to the bullets whining about him he leaped on a pile of sandbags and looked out over the parapet: it was the attack. Little flaky bombs were bursting in the fields, and already shells were arriving, exploding in thick clouds. Going to earth under the salvoes, then starting off again, our men were charging. Dispersed, scattered, like crumbs, they were so tiny that they appeared lost in that immense plain.

5 out of 5 stars One outstanding novel on the insanity of war.......2005-11-29

This book belongs in the same category as "All quiet on the western front" by Remarque. It conveys very vividly the suffering of simple soldiers in the sort of inhuman carnage the first world war stands for. It is very well readable in its style but the contents are hard to digest.

5 out of 5 stars Best book in the Halloweeen Series! .......2006-11-03

Author Nicholas Grabowsky is one of the greatest authors of this kind of genre books. His work speaks volumes about his creative writing talent. This book reinforces that point; that Grabowsky is one of the top writers! It is a shame that he still remains undiscovered by many. This is his is his best novel since "The Everborn" - which is a classic!

This book has it all for Halloween fans. They will get their money's worth!

1 out of 5 stars How could you do this Alan McElroy's excellent screenplay?.......2006-10-20

This book does not appear to have been edited. There are so many typos and other errors (like the part where Rachel says she won't leave the house without Jamie and then Grady refers to Jamie as Grady) that it makes me wish I would have just watched the movie again.

I thought it would be interesting to see how the movie translated to a novel, but I should have saved my time and money. If someone does do a novelization of Halloween 6, please let it be someone who knows an editor.

5 out of 5 stars Read this one entirely in one sitting.......2006-10-18

I want to mention I never owned the first version of the novel, the one that he did in mass market because I was too young at the time to know where to find it.

My introduction to Nicholas Grabowsky was by Nicholas Grabowsky himself when he published my short story, INSECT, on his website. So from there I managed to get a copy of this book and the Everborn. Because of my busy scedule too as an author, the reading for my own pleasure lagged because I was reading submissions for my publications.

Now as of recently I went into the hospital for a sprained neck, and I grabbed this book from my collection to read on the bus down to Cook County Hospital in Oak Forrest. I read this book all the way down to the hospital and while in the waiting room I finished it. The notes on how Nick got the access to the script made this even more interesting, and my room mate owns Halloween: 25th Anniversary and he was featured in the documentary.

As an author, it was because of Nicholas Grabowsky I managed to get my first two books published and apologize to Nick for taking so long with this review. If you've seen the movie, you know the plot but he adds a few more nasty and macabre surprises that are distinctly him. The scene descibing some of the patients in Smith's Grove was one that got to me -- especially the scene where he descibes a kid in there for eating his family for Christmas dinner and gives the leftovers to his friends at school.

That is a part that really got to me, and when the nurses called me to be checked in -- I actually jumped because the irony where I was when I was reading the book. Everything in the book is from the screenplay by Alan B. McElroy, and the scenes cut from the finished movie found their way into the novel, and this is something I have to salute Nick for doing. Five starts isn't enough to rate this book, for the scene alone about the cannibal kid -- I have to give Nick close to 9 stars here.

These days Nick is crossing over to doing film from doing novels but he still does novels. Keep them coming man, and thank you for opening the door for me two years ago.

Grabowsky is back and he is here to stay, even if he isn't writing as Nicholas Randers anymore. The 2000s he's back and writing under his real name. I had the honor of hearing from Grabowsky on the phone the day I found out I was going to be in Reality Check too, and this was also on my birthday so for that reason I have to try my damnest to give a review this book deserves.

This book is released via Amazon Books now (since they got the merger with Booksurge.) I wish this book is available as a hardcover print because I want to add that version to my collection too. The covers of the copy I own is just about worn out.

All in all, Grabowsky is a damned good story teller -- to be celebrated by both Wes Craven and Stephen King is an achivement in itself. I wish he got a copy of this book or some of his to Arkham House because he needs that kind of support too, so if you're reading this man -- give it a shot with them because I think he is more than worthy of H.P. Lovecraft.

Him bringing Dr. Sam Loomis to print in this novel I have to give him extra Kudos. I've seen writers on a place that publishes stories that are not authorized try to do it but no one can touch Grabowsky for doing a dead on vision to what both John (Carpenter) and Debra (Hill, R.I.P.) had for Myers when they first wrote the screen play and filmed it in 1978.

I first seen Halloween on network TV when I was sixteen, and between Friday the 13th, Halloween, and Dr. Giggles -- my path was set in the genre to write the stories too that scared people out of the wits. Without Carpenter or Victor Miller, I might not of imagined the stories I wrote too in the genre. Grabowsky reminded me of that too when he did this book.

Books this size aren't always a fast read but this one was. I was shocked how fast I was done reading this one -- I was reading it at four chapters an hour. He made Halloween his with this one.

I enjoyed this book very much. I love the movie and the book was just as awsome.

                        Book Description

OTHER VOICES, OTHER DOORS collects the best stories, poems and non-fiction of the last twenty years by Patrick O'Leary, acclaimed author of DOOR NUMBER THREE and THE GIFT. OTHER VOICES, OTHER DOORS is an unabashedly different book. It is a celebration of the inexhaustible shape-shifting power of stories. It is fantastic. It is mundane. And we are not in Kansas anymore. Disturbing, amusing, frank and original, OTHER VOICES, OTHER DOORS is Patrick O'Leary's first (and probably last) collection of writing. Foreword by Gene Wolfe.

Patrick O'Leary wants to tell you a story: about Van Morrison, and vasectomies, and the aliens who are us; about the way it feels - really feels - to be alive and loving and hurting in a world made of wonders. So pull up a chair, open this book: and listen. —Kathe Koja, author of Extremities

Other Voices, Other Doors is essential O'Leary-zany, serious, unclassifiable, and delightful. It reveals the many brilliant facets of a deeply humane and utterly original writer. —Kathleen Ann Goonan, author of Crescent City Rhapsody

Other Voices, Other Doors neatly captures the kaleidescopic nature of Patrick O'Leary's imagination. Begin reading with any piece - short story, essay, poem - and when next you check the time you will find hours have flown like some impossible bird. A truly hypnotic collection. —Jeffrey Ford, author of The Physiognomy

                        From LOCUS Magazine, January 2001:

Though today's publishing field is making it harder and harder to find volumes devoted to shorter pieces, collections live on thanks to small presses and the burgeoning print-on-demand business. We should also be grateful to those masters of the field who are willing to support newcomers. Gene Wolfe provides an entertaining intro to Patrick O'Leary's Other Voices, Other Doors, subtitled "A Collection of Stories, Meditations, and Poems"...he shows us through one of those doors and introduces us to the work of an author "so damned human it's a wonder the man-eating sharks haven't come ashore to get him." An author, this reader can now report, whose quirky versatality and hidden depths remind me of none other than Gene Wolfe.

If I were really clever, I might be able to disguise this review as something other than a rave. But nah — Wolfe and O'Leary are the masters at that game. So I just urge you to take a look at Other Voices, Other Doors. You won't be disappointed. —Faren Miller, Locus

                        Customer Reviews:

                        5 out of 5 stars Patrick O'Leary's THE GIFT.......2004-11-22

I love this book. At first when I heard we had to read an assigned book I thought oh great another boring book report, but I really enjoyed reading this one. The book, The Gift, was published in 1997 by the author Patrick O'Leary. It's very complicated and hard to summarize. It takes you through many different times and places, bringing an unruly team of an orphan, a king, and a Waterman (magical frog) together to triumph over an evil wizard and his accomplice at impossible odds. It is a network of many stories being told by the characters in other stories, interwoven to make one awesome novel.
The review I choose to respond to was written and published by Kate Nepveu on February 21, 1999. She named this book "an astonishing novel of and about stories." Her opinions of the book were all positive, but she thought it was "a book that neither summarizes well nor a book that should be spoiled." She claimed it was a science fantasy for mixing magic with technology, but with the two often confused. In summary, she said "The Gift is an elegant and interesting meditation on story, power, women, and the price one pays with regard to all of them."
I agree with most of the review. While at times it can be hard to follow, The Gift is the kind of book that can take your mind to places your body may never be able to get to. I agree with her (the author's) comment that the book carries some importance of female characters in it. The triumphing hero in the end was female; even the reason the antagonist became the antagonist was because of women. I agree totally with the review's comment on how the importance of women wasn't preached upon but was a natural undertone throughout the plot. After all, the book begins and ends with women with untold stories that cross other stories surrounding them, leaving much to the imagination.
One of the parts I liked in the book that this review touches on is the fact that you can't sum it up in just one story. Kate Nepveu said it the best with her comment that "This is a book about stories." There is the story of the Teller telling the sailors and their Captain another story, the story of Tim. Tim and Simon and Marty encounter many different people, who each have their own background stories and more to tell. It's kind of hard to follow until the last chapter and epilogue, where everything is explained. The review I chose labeled The Gift's many overlapping stories as having "an intricately nested effect that illuminates the world and its characters in a concise, elegant fashion." I agree wholeheartedly with that statement because though there are many things going on. The one story that contains all the others is explained by its contents. The little stories make the big picture, and that in turn made it a very interesting and good book to read.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a book that will make them think. It's not the kind of book you can read in bits and pieces; once you start it you won't want to stop. It's a modernized fairy tale full of dragons, wizards, people who can fly, frogmen, and anything your imagination can fathom. I guarantee it'll keep any reader enthralled till the very last word.

"Other Voices, Other Doors" will introduce you to the work of Patrick O'Leary. The book is chock full of charm, wit, compassion, style, and voice. A wonderful collection. But what else should we expect from the author of the marvelously inventive novels, "Door Number Three" and "The Gift"?

Your Name is Your Blessing: Hebrew Names and Their Mystical Meanings is the first book of Hebrew names that offers not only a comprehensive list of ancient and modern names with their meanings, but also a mystical insight, by way of gematria (the total of its letter components), into the personality, the soul, the prophetic destiny, and the blessing of every person based on his or her name.

For our purposes, this book was perfect. It contains a short piece of information about each name, which usually answered the questions we had. If you're looking for in-depth interpretation about the name and it's origins, this is not your text. If you're looking for the most basic information and background about a large number of names, this is your book. It makes a great starting point for more involved research.

If you research the history and meaning of names AND use Gematria, your results will be exquisitive! You will need this book as an auxilary.

Even if "your" name is not listed in this book and you know the gematria (= numeric value) of the name, you will find a blessing of this name by Rabbi Blech. You just look up the gematric index in the back of the book, find out the allegoric name with the same gematria and the blessing there will be yours too.

As you notice, I am very enthusiastic about this book!

I would recommend this book to anyone. While reading it with a circle of friends, we realized that many of the descriptions attributed to each name were amazingly accurate, and some of my friends even admited that though certain descriptions came as a shock to us, they personally recognized it as part of their personality. Even if you don't believe in the deep meanings this book has to offer, it's always just fun to read with or without friends. as always, great job Rabbi Blech!

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful resource for people looking for meaningful names.......2003-03-31

What I love about this book is that it does not just give you the simple meanings. It also gives a pasuk (a verse from the Torah) that applies to the name and give you the deeper meanings of the name and blessings associated with it. I used Your Name Is Your Blessing to help find a name for my second child. I have since lent it out many times. It seems to have disappeared, so now that I am expecting again, please G-d, I am buying it again because I enjoyed it so much last time. This is a very special baby naming book. It is one you will never regret buying. Confession: I even read it way after my child my born and named, simply because I enjoyed it so much.

AT LAST A BOOK THAT GIVES YOU MUCH MUCH MORE THAN NAMES AND THEIRMEANINGS! sIURE YOU,VE GOT TO BE A BELIEVER IN KABBALAH AND JEWISHMYSTICISM, BUT HEY WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO LOSE IF YOU TRY TO SEE WHAT THIS REMARKABLE TRADITION HAS TO SAY. As an aside I tried comparing a dozen of my friends with what the book says their names tell you about them and I found it frighteningly and fascinatingly accurate most of them.... This is really a book that started hours of discussion in our study group and I cant recommend it highly enough . It sems to be runing out in bookstores so grab it it Amazon if its avasilable!

I LOVE this book. It is great fun to see the Sinatras' and other celebrities' favorite dishes, especially the little explanatory anecdotes that precede many of them.

I have only tried one recipe so far (Pat Boone's Grammy's Chili Mac) -- but that, alone, was well worth the entire price of the book. (After tasting it, I readily understand why Clark Gable loved it so much.)

Right now, I'm ordering three copies to send as gifts.

                            Book Description

"This book is . . . a romantic history of romantic collecting. It takes seriously, and by necessity shares, the tendency of romantic histories to dwell upon their own fragmentariness, on the impossibility of capturing an intact history. . . . It traces the particular ways in which objects stepped into the lives of romantic collectors, and also the ways in which the objects moved on."—from the Introduction

In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the activity of collecting became democratized and popularized, allowing all kinds of people to become caught up in the collecting obsessions of the period: birds, books, Napoleonic relics, botanical specimens, Egyptiana, and fossils. Judith Pascoe invites readers to contemplate the ongoing allure of romantic collections.

Pascoe maintains that romanticism as a literary movement played a crucial supporting role in varied attempts by collectors of this era to fashion identities for themselves through collecting. She links the collecting craze during the romantic era with the subsequent fetishization of romantic poets and their possessions, revealing the extent to which an ongoing fascination with material objects—with Keats's hair and Shelley's guitar, for example—helped to produce an enduring image of these poets as spiritual emissaries of a less materialistic age. In language both witty and idiosyncratic, Pascoe makes the case that the romantic period stands out as a distinct moment in collecting history, a transition between the flourishing of the Renaissance wonder cabinet and the rise of the Victorian museum.

This book on collecting is itself a rare bird--a scholarly book so beautifully written one begins to think about the sentence itself as a material object. Provocative and artful, the book uses mosaic form to build its arguments. Of interest to general readers but also to scholars who wish to depart from the tired old forms.

Their book is literally the complete guide to the art of quilting with its easy-to-understand instructions and photography to guide quilters through every step of the quilting process. This revised edition is expanded to cover topics such as using computers, photo transfer, new quick-piecing techniques, stamping fabric, signing quilt blocks, creating memory quilts, and much more!

I took this book out of the library a few weeks ago and couldn't wait to get my own copy. Marianne Fons & Liz Porter have written a book that is even clear to me! That's an accomplishment! Each quilt in the book starts with the invitation to make one block, in order to learn new techniques. When you've completed all these single blocks you can put them together and have quite an impressive quilt. Instead of having one quilt pattern that you're comfortable with making, you have an entire repertoire!

These women are excellent teachers. They include tips throughout the book. Many diagrams, many clear pictures illustrating the steps. I can't say enough about this book. Whether you're a beginner or an accomplished quilter this book will be an excellent addition to your bookshelf.

Learn to do all the most important and essential techniques needed top become an expert quilter! The price was exceptionally good -- about one-half that of retail book stores -- I bought 2 copies -- one for myself and one for a fellow quilter. Thanks for the good deal.

I wish I had this book before I ventured into quilting - has everything you need. These gals write just as if they were speaking to you. Easy to understand, lots of diagrams. Great informational and reference book to use for all your quilting needs.

This handbook for quilters is full of hints, shortcuts, and practical know-how from experienced quilters. Reading it is like quilting beside your grandmother and your favorite aunt! Quilting expert Rachel Pellman has assembled wisdom from a premiere group-those women who have perfected precise piecing for generations, who learned from their grandmothers how to prevent thread from knotting, who continually experiment with new batting, new tools, new markers. Offered candidly and clearly, the hints in this handbook are of value for the novice and experienced quiltmaker alike.

This book has 50 quilt block designs in it (all 12 inch blocks) and it provides you with the quantity and sizes of each piece of the block for cutting. It also has colored pictures of the block and then 4 different ways to layout the block to create different designs/patterns (my favorite part). The only negative I have is that you need to do your own calculations/math to determine how much fabric you will need in order to create a larger project. The book also includes a wall hanging, table runner and pillow design. It includes some general instructions on how to lay quits and cut pieces in the back but assumes that you already have the basic quilting skills.

I am a serious quilter and have recently progressed to teaching quilting. I have to say that I return to this book again and again and again and always find a tip or two that will help me grow as a quilter, a tip here and there that I was not yet ready to absorb, although I have read and reread this book in its entirety. I never tire of reading Tips for Quilters and then re-reading it and then re-reading it again! Rachel, I wish you had more books similar to it!!!!!!! This book cannot be matched! It should be in every quilter's library. Thanks!

                                          Book Description

The profile and standing of the architectural profession is undergoing a transformation. Competition from civil engineers and integrated construction companies is on the increase and the market segments are becoming narrower. Buildings alone are insufficient advertising. It has become vitally important for architects to exploit the previously neglected fields of public relations, marketing, and branding in order to define, present and convey the quality and range of architectural services they offer. The purpose of this handbook is to introduce architects to those fields of marketing and communication design which are particularly relevant to their profession, to help them promote their services more creatively, develop marketing strategies for their everyday needs, and use communication and media more professionally. It presents numerous examples, solutions and strategies and demonstrates how architects can use them to personal advantage.

                                                  Book Description

Rod Steiger is a frank and intimate memoir of this troubled and immensely talented actor, one of Hollywood's most charismatic and dynamic stars, by a film critic and longtime friend of Steiger's. Steiger has lived a life as full of drama as any he portrayed on screen. His father walked out after he was born, and his mother became an alcoholic. At sixteen he enlisted in the navy. With the help of the GI Bill, he studied alongside Marlon Brando and Marilyn Monroe at the Actors' Studio. Steiger's startling intensity first made its mark on television in Paddy Chayevsky's Marty. On the screen, his career was dramatically established in his second film, On the Waterfront, with Brando. Though he was nominated for an Oscar for his memorable performance in Sidney Lumet's The Pawnbroker, he didn't win the coveted award until he starred as a redneck police chief in In the Heat of the Night in 1967. In the seventies, at the top of his success, his career faltered and he sank into a deep depression that held him in its grip for several years. Altogether, Steiger has appeared in eighty-seven films.
