      4 out of 5 stars Great, but a somewhat non-linear plot.......2007-09-03

I love this series. It's one of my favorites & takes a place of honor of being on the shelf that is closest to my bed & therefore the most often read.

However, the one thing I have to complain about is that at times the plot tends to jump around & many key elements are either skipped (like the scene where Lex finally agrees to go out with Damion) or randomly introduced (like a certain character in the 4th volume who starts a war) without any previous mention. The artwork tends to change per volume, but even though I have my artist preferences the artwork is still fun & fits the tone of the storyline.

I recommend this series heartily, I just wish that Valentino could have fleshed it out just a wee bit more so the storyline was a bit smoother (and so we could have more Gloom Cookie).

4 out of 5 stars overall... quite squishy........2005-10-11

of course the story is excellent... darkly sweet and endearing. what really made me sad was the art however... you can SEE it deteriorate from the first story to the last... i absolutely adore gloomcookie. but i have to say, john gebbia made this volume a bit of a shame with his eventual careless and POOR art. and i say this as an artist. ;)

still... if you love gloomcookie, you need to have it.

4 out of 5 stars Not as squishy as the first..........2004-01-03

I'm not too fond of John Gebbia style. The illustrations seem rushed and sketchy. I don't think I'd have ever picked Gloom Cookie up if he'd been the original illustrator. What's with the blobs for hands? It's not THAT hard to draw a hand!
Other than that this still a cute series. The story is interesting, the characters are fun, and the setting is gloomy. The artwork is the only reason this didn't get 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Great collection of comics.......2003-02-14

I had to get Gloomcookie's Vol II, after I read the first volume. The storyline was still as great as ever. Only this time, a different artist was used. I was alittle disappointed that the original artist wasn't used, only because Ted's art was more vibrant and eye catching. Don't get me wrong, the new artist is cool, just not the same. I definately recommend this second volume. If you read the first volume, you have to read the second.

5 out of 5 stars The wonderful world of gloomcookie.......2002-10-29

I absolutely love gloomcookie! From the moment I accidently discovered the first book in a cartoon shop I was captivated. And although the artwork in the second volume is not as smashing as in the first, the story is so wonderfully fascinating and addictive it does not really matter much. The complexity AND simplicity of it is incredible.
      Highly recommended!

Ancient minds imagined the benefits of technological advances that wouldn't be realized for hundreds of years: "heavier-than-air-flight, ultrarapid ground transportation, the prolongation of life through better medicines, even the construction of skyscrapers and the use of robots." But as Tom Shachtman points out in his Alfred P. Sloan-funded science history Absolute Zero and the Conquest of Cold, no one could conceive of how or why humans would make use of intense cold. "Cold was a mystery without an obvious source, a chill associated with death, inexplicable, too fearsome too investigate."

But as we now know, the mastery of cold has yielded innumerable advances, from the ubiquitous presence of refrigeration and air-conditioning to phenomenal leaps in superconductivity and subatomic research--in 1999 alone, Shachtman cites, a Harvard team used laser cooling to create an environment 50-billionths of a degree above zero, slowing the speed of light to just 38 miles per hour! Absolute Zero guides us skillfully through the fitful, nascent growth of this misunderstood, bastard branch of science, from the early accomplishments of Boyle, Joule, William Thomson (later Lord Kelvin), and other lesser-knowns like Anders Celsius and Gabriel Daniel Fahrenheit to the 20th century, the integration of ultracold research with quantum theory, and the most recent accomplishments in the field. Shachtman's approachable voice proves equally facile with both the science of cold and the mundane history of its technical and commercial uses, including the global ice trade and the work of one of cold's greatest commercial pioneers, a chemist named Clarence Birdseye. --Paul Hughes

      Book Description

In a sweeping yet concise scientific adventure story, Tom Shachtman takes us on a journey in which the extraordinary secrets of cold are teased apart and mastered, bringing advances in civilization and comfort. Starting in the 1600s with an alchemist's attempt to air-condition Westminster Abbey, the incredible story includes the invention of thermometers and scales, the sale of Walden Pond ice to tropical countries by nineteenth-century merchants, and the pursuit of absolute zero by scientists who competed with as much fervor as those racing to the poles.

1 out of 5 stars Utterly annoying and scientifically misleading.......2003-07-19

I got the distinct impression that the author lost interest in his own work somewhere after the third chapter, but had already spent his advance and was forced to finish writing it. The science is misleading (I think he mentioned "vaccuming off lighter molecules" of the same gas in the Kammerleigh Onnes section, maybe forgetting that identical molecules all have the same molecular weight unless we are talking isotopes, but hey, who wants to bother getting the scientific fundamentals straight when we can gossip about Tydall and Dewar's little falling out...). This book is a exaggerated People magazine retelling of the search to attain Absolute Zero. The author would have been wise to try speaking to a few living scientists to get a feel for the real challenges, frustrations, and joys of doing research rather than investing so much energy in "he said, she said" stories. I think the telling of this story would best have been left to someone with a better understanding of physics and the art of doing scientific research. From my own experience, research is no more a "wild ride" than gardening, or a long hike. It's joys are subtle but persistent, not a point this author ever seems to have understood.

5 out of 5 stars Very Well Written Understandable Yet Technical Book.......2002-01-22

This is a very interesting book. The technology discussed is complex, but the complexity never gets in the way or leaves the reader wondering what the author is talking about. I highly recommend this book especially for those interested in the history of industrial revolution, or in the sequence of discoveries leading to the discovery of super conductors.

2 out of 5 stars Explains the personalities, not the science.......2001-06-06

For a book with this much detail about such a complex topic not to have a single illustration, diagram, or equation cannot be an oversight. I'm not sure if the author really wants to give you the illusion that he is allowing you to understand the relevant physics or not. He delves endlessly into the upbringing of the various scientists, and fails miseraby at making lay people understand what it is they dicovered. Many times he mentions scienfic findings in a context that makes one wonder if the equation or experiment turned out to be a cornerstone of later discovery or a red herring. I therefore conjecture that this book was meant to be primarily a history of competition and petty bickering among academics, and the title refers to how much you will learn about the physical forces responsible for low temperatures. The comparisons to "Longitude", (an excellent book), are apt in that both books focus on the egos and disputes involved, but "Longitude" traces the fight over the lifespan of one man, who ultimately triumphs despite long odds. If that book had been carried through with the same tone until it became a breathless account of how Bullova can outsell Rolex in 1992, I would also have given it 2 stars.

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2000-10-19

If you are interested in science, scientists and its history; If all you remember from your science classes are the names of scientists like Boyle, Van der waals and Joule; if you are ready to be taken on a fantastic ride into the realms of the cold and the story of its conquest.... This is the book for you.

I really enjoyed it very much. Not only did I get a better perspective of physics and chemistry but I was surprised at the amount of work that had gone into the construction of the common refrigerator or the air conditioner, to which we never pay any attention. And the personal touch the author added really helped me feel like I was with the scientists when each discovery was being made. Now, I feel like I know Dewar and Joule well enough to call them by their first names!

5 out of 5 stars Ordinary Time Exposed.......2001-06-19

Ms. Wright, a renowned spiritual writer, has produced another fine book. She combines mysticism, spirituality, and theology to focus on Ordinary Time. We are not just marking time until the "big" seasons, we are journeying through the cycles of the liturgical year. All of her reflections are conflated with perspectives from her daily life in a beautiful erudite prose. Well worth it!

            5 out of 5 stars A Compendium of Reflections.......2001-06-17

Wendy Wright employs her vast spiritual knowledge to develop a series of meditations on Ordinary Time. Each reflection is based either on a particular Feast Day (i.e. Corpus Christi, Trinity Sunday) or a period in Ordinary Time. These reflections conflate a variety of themes with personal insights spanning the history of mysticism with contemporary thought and spirituality. An excellent book to enjoy time and time again.

3 out of 5 stars A good resource about Native American foods.......2000-12-27

I purchased this book because my stepson harvested some acorns recently and I scoured my large cookbook collection, to no avail, for any information on how to process them or use them in cooking. This book contains information on that and so much more.

This would be an excellent resource for a hunter because game and fish of many kinds are covered here. There are recipes for venison curry, venison meatloaf, rabbit pot roast, wild duck with orange sauce and cornbread stuffed trout. There is also a section on edible wild plants and berries, with recipes. Nutritional information is given for many of the food items listed in the book. Did you know that deer meat is loaded with B vitamins, for instance?

To me, one of the best things about the book is that 100% of royalties go to Native charities. In the foreword it says that the royalties have helped to support scholarships, a children's camp and substance abuse programs. So you can give a little back, and you get a great source for Native North American foods.

It's impossible to think of the modern conservative movement without the deep influence of William F. Buckley Jr., founder of National Review and host of the television series Firing Line. Yet Buckley's evangelizing didn't just occur on the printed page or go out on the airwaves; he gave countless numbers of speeches during the second half of the 20th century. Several dozen of the most significant are collected in Let Us Talk of Many Things, from a 1950 address at Yale University hinting at themes that would be developed fully in God and Man at Yale to a 1999 talk to the Heritage Foundation (on the meaning of heritage, appropriately enough). In between, there are comments on Joseph McCarthy, Barry Goldwater, Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher, the failure of the drug war--and on and on and on.

In its way, the book provides a history of American conservative politics, as well as a witty primer on what those politics are all about. One example: "Politics, it has been said, is the preoccupation of the quarter-educated, and I do most solidly endorse that observation, and therefore curse this century above all things for its having given all sentient beings very little alternative than to occupy themselves with politics. It is very well to say we will ignore the Great Society. But will the Great Society repay us our courtesy by ignoring us?" In another speech, delivered shortly after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. and at a time when many Americans turned stoutly pessimistic about their own country, Buckley turned matters on their head: "That is the salient datum in America: not that we bred the aberrant assassins of John Kennedy and Martin Luther King, but that we bred the widely shared and the most intensely felt sense of grief: such grief over the loss of Mr. Kennedy and Mr. King as is felt over the loss of one's own sons." The statement is vintage Buckley: the old-fashioned use of the word datum, two colons in a single sentence, and a comforting faith in the United States. There's also an insightful and hilarious essay, which first appeared in The New Yorker, describing a life on the lecture circuit, complete with tips on how to make sure undergraduates driving you to the airport the next morning arrive at your hotel on time. This is a simply wonderful book by one of America's premier public intellectuals. --John J. Miller

                            Book Description

William F. Buckley Jr. has long been admired for his remarkable gifts as a writer, debater, and orator. The man who helped ignite the modern conservative movement has for the past fifty years played a significant role in the great social debates that have shaped our country and indeed the world. In the course of his long career, he has given hundreds of speeches to generations of listeners.

"A veritable treasure house. This book has long been awaited by those of us addicted to Buckley's profound, elegant, and witty commentary on the twentieth century."
                            — Henry A. Kissinge

He has talked of many things—from the Cold War to the passing of dear friends, from moral decay to the joys of sailing the open seas, from the defense of liberty to the comfort of faith. Here, collected for the first time, are Buckley's most memorable speeches, spanning five decades—from the precocious Yale student's Class Day address in 1950 to the elder commentator's accumulated wisdom at century's end. The speeches are one-of-a-kind snapshots that capture the breadth and depth of the ideological wars fought during our country's most turbulent days. They are also richly worded masterpieces of wit, eloquence, and persuasion.

Including new commentary from the author that provides historical context for his speeches, this book is a celebration of an extraordinary public life.

                              Book Description

Following "House Doctor" and "House Doctor Quick Fixes", this text is the latest title from TV's DIY guru, Ann Maurice. Packed with hints and tips for fixing up the house and adding hundreds to its value, this book is aimed at all home enthusiasts. Each house is dealt with in its entirety and there is more focus on the owners of the houses than in the two previous books. Maurice gives her initial diagnosis of the house as a whole and her final verdict is highlighted in a box. The changes made to every room are documented along with the owners' reactions to them. Each case history is followed by examples of how to transform something from tatty to tasteful, for example, transforming an old garden table into a mosaic dining table. A number of different styles are covered: Victorian; country; retro; minimalist chic; seaside; and so forth. The key components needed to get a particular look are detailed and illustrated.

2 out of 5 stars Not the book I thought it would be!.......2007-06-05

The description said "biography" and didn't list the number of pages. I was under the impression it would be a fairly good-sized biography of G'nR. Instead it was a very short magazine with most of it's very few pages devoted to song lyrics and music. Perhaps I should have seen it was publised by Cherry Lane Music and been suspicious. This is not a biography in the slight stretch of the term. It's sheet music for those who play with a few photos and a reprint of a magazine interview thrown in. This was a HUGE dissapointment for someone trying to read a real biography of G'nR.
