For a start, it's got a really cool title.......2005-05-07

For anyone who has ever peeked into Neil Gaiman's quirky, funny, deeply philosophical and richly imagined worlds, this book has incredible insights into the ways in which he thinks, creates, works and interacts with the many writers, artists, editors and others who have helped advance his vision. McCabe gives us one side of the coin with bookend interviews with Gaiman himself. The meat of the collection, however, is a series of conversations with the editors, pencilers, inkers and other creative forces that helped bring Sandman from obscurity to the level of cult icon, as well as other collaborators who have helped define and develop Gaiman's body of work. Sometimes, they talk about Gaiman -- what it's like to work with him, to shape vague ideas into full-blown graphic novels, to stay at his house and drink with him down at the pub -- and sometimes they discuss their own creative processes and the thoughts that go into their work.

I'm sure Gaiman would agree the best way to know him is to read from the vast library he has created: novels, short stories, comics, scripts, poetry and song lyrics, one and all. Great book, bad smell.......2005-02-28

Although this is a wonderful book, I can't help but put it away after about 10 minutes because of the smell. Am I the only one who has noticed the unusual smell of the print in this book? To be sure that I wasn't imagining things, I had my wife smell the book, and she too found it to be unpleasant. As a matter of fact, after handling it for a while, we both had to rinse our palates because of an unusual taste we had begun to experience. Did the publishers use an different type of inking process or glue for the binding? I look forward to hearing from anyone else who is experiencing this phenomenon.

A must-read for all Neil Gaiman fans............2005-02-19

While Hanging Out With The Dream King isn't exactly what you would consider a biographical work, it does come across as such because of the order of and nature of the interviews in the book. It starts out with an interview with Mr. Gaiman and then the proceeding interviews kind of chronologically follow his career from Neil's early journalist days through his time working on the comic The Sandman and beyond. The book concludes with an another interview with Neil to sort of book-end everything together.
My self personally, I really enjoyed all the interviews, wich kind of give you an insight on how Mr. Gaiman works and his relationships to the people he has worked with over the years.I especially enjoyed the interviews with all the various Sandman artists. After reading this book I felt compelled to break out all my Sandman graphic novels and read them again.
...I definitely recommend Hanging Out With The Dream King to any and all Neil Gaiman fans out there. You will not be dissapointed!

A work of Love.......2007-08-10

This is truly a work of love by Roger Cheesbro (or DloraH as he is known to Klingon Scholars) - love of this timeless epic as well as love for the Klingon Language (thlingan Hol)! This work, sponsored by the Klingon Language Institute, is a superb translation of the Epic Gilgamesh into what is essentially Modern Imperial Klingon (ta' Hol). It is a dual language book with the Klingon on the left-hand page and the English (sorry Federation Standard!) on the right. Cheesbro makes every effort to capture the poetical style and intensity of the original poem (which incidentally originates from Sumerian and Akkadian sources) under the constraints of an alien (!) tongue that has little resemblance in grammar or vocabulary to the originals. Be forewarned, to get the most out of this you will need The Klingon Dictionary as well as Klingon For The Galactic Traveler by Marc Okrand to make sense of the Klingon. If you are beginning to study Klingon, however, this is an excellent source of Klingon writing to read as the sentences are fairly small and the action is lively and the vocabulary fairly straightforward.

One may occasionally read disparaging remarks about the usefulness of learning a fictitious language like KLingon usually ending with the admonition of "Get a life!".What people who say such things fail to understand is that learning something like Klingon is a hobby! We do it for fun! Yes there are real nerds out there who like learning REALLY foreign languages just for fun! After all what "use" is most other hobbies like stamp-collecting, or model train building, or watching college football for that matter? But in the long run tackling a REALLY foreign (alien?_ language like Klingon does have a practical value.There is ample evidence in the psychological and biological literature to demonstrate that learning a language quite different from your mother tongue helps maintain, support, develop, and reinforce cognitive abilities at every age. It helps keep one sharp (quite a boon to old geezers like me!. As such this becomes more than just a hobby!

Make no mistake about it, Klingon is not easy! My wife says "This is HARD!" My response is "Well, yeah!" (Apologies to Spike from BTVS). But hard work will pay off in the end.

I can think of no better way to really get into Klingon (as written) than this book after you have some familiarity with the language.

Another epic in the "original Klingon" canon.......2005-05-08

When I first heard Captain Picard relating the story of Gilgamesh to Captain Dathon, my interest was piqued. Most of the story seems like it could be about ancient Klingons, and the portrayals of Enkidu and the other characters is vivid and detailed; the plot is stirring and engaging.

Now if we could only convince the Klingon Language Institute to tackle Beowulf and King Arthur...

There is dynamite in praise.......2000-06-14

excellent and biblical to show the purpose of praise in the kingdom of God. Why is praise such an important connection to prayer and power. The book opens the reader to understand the reason for worship.

Praying the Psalms.......2007-01-01

This is actually a dynamic litle pentcostal book that gerenerated more controversy which may have been from occultic or Catholic people in Toledo, Ohio where I live.
My mom got this book from a friend of hers at her Pentecostal church in 1986-I recognize the cover. Gossett's idea was to deal with problems in life by faith and praising God. He would advocate saying or praying HALLELUJAH from the Bible when you have a problem and want help from God. And gave examples of how this had worked in the lives of other people.
At the end of this book, he listed scripture memory verses from the Psalms that you could pray.
But even for me with my two years of grad school in science, I wanted a simpler solution; so I would simply open my Bible at the first Psalm and pray out loud, loudly and fervently as James' epistle would suggest was effective. I could normally do this for one hour at a time until I came to Psalm 40. At which point I would feel the presence of God and be still and even start praying in tongues briefly.
But the violent content of some of the Psalms I prayed upset my enemies, which I think included my brothers. And I started hearing people outside and even a few times in church mocking my praying the Psalms. They were trying to shame me out of this practice. At a Baptist church, I heard one man call them "the devil's Psalms". And I had met with the pastor of that church to see if there was anyting wrong with praying the Psalms out loud. He assured me that I was doing nothing wrong; although he had recommended praying them in a medatative manner. Another time, I would hear a Jewish sounding woman outside my house mocking me and saying condescendingly that I was saying "Ceddar". Even as recently as last year, I had heard on TBN a Carribean pastor say that some people "pray rthe Psalms sideways"! It was right on the TV!
After three months of this verbal discouragement I quit praying the Psalms out loud. But one particularly good Saturday night I had prayed all 150 of them out loud in my mom's livign room and I felt such a powerful presence of God that I felt that Jesus Christ was standing in my room in front of me! I began praying out loud in tounges that fall evening in 1986. And my uncle who had huntington's heard me and he went wild, running out of his bedroom and turning the kitchen lights off and one! I must have really had one whale of an experience. My former aunt was Korean and I had to wonder if I had been saying something in Korean that he udnerstood! As further evidence that this experience was fore real, I lost all inclination to use foul language for 8 years! And I used to be an enlisted man in the Army!
I remind myself that Toledo is not communist Russia during the Cold War. But I do remember being at the Christian Serviceman's center in Edgewood Maryland where I heard a recording of an evangelist speaking in Baltimore. He had said he had been a former member of the Inner Circle of the Illuniatti. He had said that Toledo, Ohio and Toledo, Spain were both underground occult capitals. I guess all the people who used psychology on me in 1986 to try to discourage me from praying the Psalms out loud seems to substantiate this claim that Toledo, Ohio is a major underground occult capital.
\Gosett's book and my initial experiecnes with the Psalms did persuade me to believe that God punsihes my enemies and persecutors-like in Romans where Paul had written that vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord. I developed a new belief that God punishes my persecutors an enemies. And found plenty of New Testament to substantiate my beliefs. And I also did my own inductive studies on the first book of the Psalms and half of the Imprecatory Psalms that are listed in the Ryrie Study Bible!
So, this was another life-changing book!

big fan...unusual recipes!.......2006-09-20

Actually, I didn't find the recipe book to be particularly low-fat. I consider it moderately-fat. But this is a great cookbook I've gone to for ideas. Lots of unusual ingrediants and combinations--curry, butternut squash, apples, turkey sausage. Not your typical pasta recipe!

Also, the book itself is unusually sturdy. At current prices, this book is a steal.

A Great Pasta Book.......2000-02-01

This book is one of my favorites. It covers beef, chicken, fish, shellfish and vegetarian pasta dishes. Each recipe has a full color photograph of the dish. It has a hardcover and the book stays open easily while you're cooking. So far I've made ten of the dishes and they've all been good. I can not say enough good things about this book. Most of the recipes are simple and easy enough for beginners to use.

Definitely light weight pastas........1999-03-18

Some of the recipes have excess pasta. If you want a little less filler, cut back on the specified pasta quantity.

Paper piece some beautiful flowers :).......2003-11-06

The book contains 101 beautiful flower blocks, and instructions for 3 projects using these blocks. All blocks and projects are shown in full color.

I'm not a beginner paper (foundation) piecer so I didn't pay all that much attention to the directions at the beginning of the book, although at a quick glance, they do look quite detailed and well thought out, and there are lots of "how-to" drawings.

Block size is NOT shown on the individual patterns. The block sizes are listed in the General Directions at the beginning of the book. [I think they should be listed on each block - my memory isn't what it used to be]. The color photograph of the block is not on the same page as the pattern, so you need to refer back and forth for color placement. There is a "grey tones" drawing for each pattern, but I don't find that very helpful - it should be in color (either a drawing or a photograph). Multi-piece patterns are NOT separated, and I find the bold lines (separating the pieces) hard to distinguish from the piecing lines. Seam allowances are also not included. Personally, I find it annoying to have to photocopy the pattern, then cut it apart and add (or account for when sewing) the seam allowance. Lots of people don't mind, tho, so I might be in the minority :). The assembly directions for multi-piece patterns are clearly diagrammed.

I like my patterns to be done a certain way, and in this book, they are not. However, I still love the book because the patterns and projects are gorgeous, and shown in full color. The patterns range from fairly simple to extremely detailed, so there is something for most skill ranges. If you like florals and you like paper (foundation) piecing, I think you'll enjoy the projects in this lovely book :)

This book goes into many different styles of blue and white rooms. There are some amazing ideas and beautiful pictures to explore. A nice centerpiece for a coffee table in a blue and white room.
