Book Description
For years Crusher Creel has terrorized the world with his ability to absorb the properties of anything he touches. Now, after being locked away in a secret underground prison, the Absorbing Man has gained the new ability to jump in and out of people's minds. But what happens when the mind he jumps into belongs to the 800-pound monster known as the Incredible Hulk?
Customer Reviews:
A Far Deadlier Absorbing Man Rears His Head.......2007-05-14
The Absorbing Man - Crusher Creel - is back, and more dangerous than ever. Giving Bruce Banner exactly what he Doesn't need as he continues life as a fugitive in the mega-arc started in Incredible Hulk # 34 (see the "Return Of The Monster" Trade Paperback), Creel - complete with new powers he's acquired during his incarceration in a state-of-the-art secret facility - crosses Banner's path in this collection that reprints Incredible Hulk (2nd series) #s 55-59.
As the volume begins, Creel is in his prison; while outside, something kills a woman who works at the facility. Inside, other workers begin acting extremely strangely. Everything's tied into the evolution of the Absorbing Man and his expanding abilities. In "Hide In Plain Sight", you realize that all along, the true extent of how dangerous Creel really is has been underestimated, partially because Creel has never been the brightest character and has lacked the imagination to really use his power. Now he's smarter, and has more power than ever to use. Here, the Absorbing Man is one of the greatest threats the Hulk has ever faced. The entrance of the Hulk into this chain of events at first seemed coincidental, but it's entirely possible Creel planned it.
The only real flaw is that in this volume, for the first time in Bruce Jones's run on the title, a slight sense of repetition in the way the arcs unfold is beginning to creep in. This sense proves to be short-lived (the very next arc, "Split Decisions", shakes things up again, and it really isn't enough to deduct a star.
Although I recommend starting with "Return Of The Monster" (Hulk 34-39) and working through in order, this volume differs from the rest of Bruce Jones's run in that it can be read without the rest of the extended arc first, if one wishes. It's still tied in to the whole Ricky Myers saga, but not as closely as the other volumes. This arc came out the summer the Hulk movie was released and I think Marvel wanted to give people a clean 'jumping-on' point, (# 55 was one of the 25-cent issues that gets brought out periodically to introduce new people to a title) but they accomplished it without abandoning the longer story they were in the middle of; they just let the focus shine off to the side for a couple days in the big green guy's life.
Another very exciting, very rewarding chapter in a truly awesome run for the Hulk.
Another solid chapter in Bruce Jones' Hulk saga.......2003-11-26
Collecting the five part storyarc, Hide in Plain Sight finds Carl Creel AKA The Absorbing Man with a new ability that allows him to jump in and out of peoples minds. This little technique proves handy considering he's trapped in an underground prison, and who just so happens to be in the middle of this? That's right, good 'ol Bruce Banner. Hide in Plain Sight ie yet another more than solid chapter scripted by Bruce Jones, undoubtadly the best writer of the Hulk since Peter David. The story is a bit of a sidebar to Jones' continuing conspiracy storyarc, but this is a welcome distraction. Leo Fernandez's art seems a bit cartoony for me, he doesn't give Hulk the gritty look that is done so superbly by Mike Deodato, but the art isn't bad by any means. All in all, Hide in Plain Sight is yet another more than solid chapter in Bruce Jones' excellent Hulk saga.

Andrej Koscuisko had graduated with the highest honors from the Mayon Medical Center and could have started a lucrative private practice. But his father had other plans for him, sending him to Fleet Orientation Station Medical where he will learn to become a Ship's Surgeon, a highly skilled torturer armed with the powerful Writ of Inquistion. Unable to escape his brutal training, Koscuisko will have to reconcile his natural empathy for the sick with a dark secret he will learn about himself. First-time author Susan Matthews demonstrates a sure hand and proves she's not afraid to take on a disturbing subject.
Book Description
A promising young surgeon, Andrej Koscuisko has come, with great reluctance, to study at a military orientation center adrift in black space. Against his will, he will train here to serve as a "Ship's Inquisitor" -- a vocation that runs counter to his deepest moral convictions.
During his tenure, Andrej will earn the devotion of his personal slave. He will gain the grudging respect of the Station Administration. He will make a deadly enemy of his fellow student. He will learn a frightening truth about himself. And ultimately, he will be forced to sacrifice all that he holds dear...
Customer Reviews:
This book is spot-on average........2007-06-18
I first read this book about 7 years ago at my husband's urging. For a while before that, I'd given up on sci-fi and even most fantasy novels and had been concentrating on reading historical fiction. But I picked this up and read it. I don't remember being too impressed with it - it was certainly nothing to rave about - but obviously I wasn't put off by it because I recently picked it up for a reread.
Well, we all know that sci-fi books generally have a lot of explanatory backstories at the beginning, complete with invented names, different planets, lifestyles, inventions, plants, species...this is an accepted thing. But I found this book to be overwhelmed with this stuff in the early pages.
After a while - once the hero begins his actual training - the pace picks up a bit, but the in-depth descriptions of the pain and injury he causes his prisoners are vulgar and overdone. After a point, the reader's mind begins to go numb and gloss over all the mentions of blood, screaming, ripped ligaments, effects of the whips, etc.
On this second reading I found myself skimming to the parts concerning Andrej's personal relationships, between him and his assigned servant Joslire, his acquired servant Robert, his co-student Noycannir, his Tutor, and the various administrative personnel at his location. The long stretches concerning the tortures he inflicts were repetitive and didn't engage me at all.
The end was satisfactorily cliffhanging in preparation for the sequel.
One Sick Woman.......2007-02-18
All I can say is that I am glad Mathews sublimates her urges into fiction. Because her main character is a sick, twisted, perverted man, and she seems to be absolutely in love with him. As is everybody else in the book. She seems to delight in scenes of the most loathsome and sadistic torture imaginable. Oh sure, she might SAY she is against it -- but she's getting off on it. You can tell. I took a shower after finishing the book, and I threw my copy in the garbage, where it belonged. If I could give the book negative stars, I would.
Even if you don't find the torture off-putting, there's absolutely no suspense at all -- since everybody loves our hero, he's never in any danger. Not to mention the fact that he never, not even once, actually attempts to, you know, resist this authoritarian society. He just goes along with the torturing.
Nor is the totalitarian society as depicted in the book even remotely plausaible. In our own world, totalitarians societies have hardly been wealthy and prosperous. I simply don't believe in the universe she has constructed.
You'll feel dirty for enjoying this........2005-01-10
This book is really just a morality play with a sci-fi setting. The story really calls into question what is appropiate punishment, how far should the 'law' go in order to seek out a crime?
The main character is being instructed on how to be an adjucator (read: torturer), basically one who confronts and tortures prisoners in order to get them to confess their guilt. The twist invovles the fact is that he's a surgeon, and is also bound by his 'do no harm' vows.
However, as we progress we learn the character enjoys using his medical knowledge to harm and heal properly. So, I guess if you enjoy sadism, this book is for you.
Promotional note from the author.......2004-04-30
I would like to take shameless advantage of this feature in Amazon.com to note that the first three Koscuisko novels (currently out of print) will be reprinted by Meisha Merlin in 2005. The next Koscuisko novel, "Warring States," is due from Meisha Merlin in late 2004/early 2005.
Cheers,
Susan R. Matthews
A Singular and Absorbing Tale!.......2004-04-14
This book transcends my expectation. Browsing for a writer I have never read I am glad to have found another favorite to add to my list of must read writers. An Exchange of Hostages is just not your typical sci-fi fantasy. Its plot is unique and brilliantly conceived. Matthews' world is grim, intense and strangely moving. The characters have depth and I definitely care about what happen to the protagonist and his "slaves" next. It is disappointing that this book and the next two in the series are out-of-print. I am just glad to have acquired them from Amazon market place. An Exchange of Hostages is definitely one story which will stick in my mind.
Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A577114. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Test and Evaluation of ballistic missile defense systems under development is required to assess system technical performance, design specifications, and maturity, and to determine if the defense systems are operationally effective, suitable, and survivable against the threat(s) identified in the System Threat Assessment Report (STAR). Acquisition of threat- representative ballistic missile targets that emulate threat systems, as detailed in the STARs, are required to test and evaluate defense systems under realistic operational environments. The evolving ballistic missile threat and the increased proliferation of ballistic missile systems have increased the urgency to develop and field missile defense systems capable of defeating all of these threats. Threat representative ballistic missile targets and Foreign Military Acquisition targets play a critical role in assessing performance capabilities, system maturity, operational effectiveness, suitability, and survivability during developmental and operational test and evaluation of missile defense systems. This research identifies key management challenges experienced since 1990 by current and former target Product Managers and Project Managers. Recommendations are also included concerning how to manager these challenges based upon the lessons learned provided by experienced product Managers and Project Managers.

Book Description
"Few books contain a cast of characters as fascinating as those who populate A Pelican in the Wilderness, Isabel Colegate's charming meander through the history of hermits and solitaries. Elegantly written...a small gem of a book."-- Wall Street Journal
From Lao-tse and the Buddha, St. Anthony and the early Celtic hermits, through Rousseau, Thoreau, Ruskin and down to the present day, certain gifted persons, each in his own way, have shown a vocation for living alone and apart, finding in simplicity and attention to Nature a spiritual space to be explored and rejoiced in. Others, retreating from the world in scorn or cut off from it by scandal, have found that solitude is Hell, a pit of melancholy and morbid fancy. In this, her first work of nonfiction, novelist Isabel Colegate gives us the lives of the solitaries--male and female, medieval and modern, divinely inspired and patently fraudulent. But this is no mere gallery of saints and sinners, poets and misanthropes. It is also a re-valuation of solitude for our times, and a reminder that it is in solitude that the soul meets itself, refreshes itself, and from there goes out to join the communal dance.

Unreadable........2004-05-17
This random monk wore a yellow loincloth, that random monk wore a saffron loincloth. A mountain in some painting by Cezanne resembles some other mountain in India where another random monk lives. Various famous writers have lived by themselves, or at least lived in small apartments; hence, reference to these famous writers is appropriate in a book that purports to be about "hermits, solitaries, and recluses."
An Antidote for the Modern Mass Mind.......2003-09-16
It is nice to occasionally find a book that resonates at the same frequency as one's own soul. In my case, it was this perceptive and extremely well written study of hermits, solitaries, and recluses. It is not often in our modern world that the possibility, and legitimacy, of a solitary existance is examined in a sympathetic manner.
I do not think that I've seen a more comprehensive study of the phenomenon of the solitary lifestyle (Chinese and Tibetan hermits, the desert fathers, medieval anchorites, monastic and hermit religious orders, wandering holy men from Ireland to Russia, shamans, the pastoral posers of the 18th century, American mountain men, the New England transidentalists, eccentric noblemen, classical Stoics, Romantic poets, conservationists- even Howard Hughs!)
Clearly, this is a topic that resonates with the author too, but then as a writer that would seem only natural (i.e., she is a member of what has traditionally been considered the solitary profession.) She clearly understands the various motivations that come to drive individuals to a solitary existance, both voluntarily and involuntarily (love of nature, inspiration, world weariness, high sensitivity, preservation of the poetic ego, scopophobia, religious dedication, and the desire to find union with the Divine itself....)

we gather together.......1999-12-10
I read this book, when it was first published. I found it interesting and factual. Researched very good. The book includes personal experiences of the authors, who are teachers in the San Gabriel Valley of California. I found it especially interesting as I was taking folklore at the time in college. I found the New Year's Hoppin' John tradition delightful, as I had been invited to join a family from the South. I would recommend the book to anyone who is interested in the folklore and ways of America.

THE DESIGNS ARE A TREASURE AND SO IS THIS VOLUME.......2005-08-22
Lovers of fine, unique jewelry will be delighted and amazed to find the stunning works of art displayed in this landmark volume by Fritz Falk. Pieces shown range from the middle of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th. These designs are elegant, extravagant one-of-a-kind pieces with styles representing Art Nouveau and Art Deco.
Among the designers included are Rene Lalique, GeorgesFouquet, Theodor Wende, Ernesto Rinzi - to name only a few of the masters who created memorable pieces.
Master goldsmith Fritz Falk holds a doctorate in art history and served as director of the Schmuck Museum from 1971 - 2003. It is he who shaped the collection as it is seen today, eliciting rave notices from the international community. The Schmuck, established in 1961, is the largest museum in the world dedicated to jewelry design and history.
With fascinating text in both English and German, the volume contains 190 color illustrations, each unforgettable, visually arresting. Dr. Falk contributes insightful introductions to each of the periods represented - The Revival Period, Art Nouveau and The Art Deco 20s/30s.
While many cannot board a plane to visit the Schmuck Museum in Pforzheim, Germany, all can enjoy this magnificent volume. It's a treasure in itself.

Grab Yer Axe and learn how to RATT & ROLL !!!.......2007-01-13
When Ratt was at the top of their game, you could not beat them in better riffs and licks. This book gives a great breakdown on the great songs that Ratt wrote. Both Robin Crosby & Warren DeMartini recorded some great sizzling guitar work, and this book will show you the exact notes that they played. I highly recommend this book !!!
accurate??dont think so.......2006-12-23
well i just got my book...after a quick look thru on the loo i have to ask myself...who the hell checks for accuracy when finalizing a book?? the notes might be right but some of the riffs/licks fingerings are off...i know for a fact "lay it down" isnt played the way its notated (just check out the video).ive seen a more accurate version in a old guitar mag..if anybody knows players of this genre they used wide stretches(jake e lee, etc) for some riffs,etc....that intro riff is so wrong how its notated here.plus the beginning phrases in the starting of the solo and ending of the solo.that pattern is all wrong..another example is for the song "dance"..the intro riff uses a echo/delay to create the riff-which position and pattern is wrong- (wolf marshall got it right in his version and that was like 15yrs ago!!!)..its notated here as if he played each note individually and wrong area of the neck..BUT the solo looks good (go figure).now the solo in "loving you is a dirty job" is questionabe fingering-wise.."way cool jr" is one that looks good all the way thru("round and round" and "body talk"also look good)...
with some of the riffs/licks on the album the fingerings just arent correct.some of these riffs are classic so its a shame to have it notated wrong..
another thing is to get the "tone" of some of these licks they have to be played in certain strings/positions and patterned phrases....im happy to see a "best of" book but id think after all these years and all the tools/archives/videos/live footage for double checking of accuracy thats available it would be spot on...but its not..even a lyric i saw wasnt correct and thats just after a quick look thru...no guitar in hand or anything..ive been looking thru tabs for YEARS to know what "looks" right...like i already said..the notes might be correct but with tabulature the fingerings are just as important...
too bad the artist dont get involved with these books (like lynch did for his but its not perfect either) so they can go over the finished work before its finalized to give the transcribers notes on what to correct...the best of lynch looks more correct than this but has its flaws too...these 2 players have similar styles....gorenberg is the only transcriber i heard of with this book out of the 3 or 4 others.(i think his work is good-maybe more experiance or maybe he was around this era)..i cant say whos work is the one at fault here cause it doesnt list who did what...
