Book Description
Though banned three weeks after its publication in 1909, Vita Sexualis is far more than a prurient erotic novel. The narrator, a professor of philosophy, wrestles with issues of sexual desire, sex education, and the proper place of sensuality. His story explores his own journey into sexual awareness, spanning fifteen years, from his first exposure to erotic woodcuts at the age of six, to his first physical response to a woman, and his eventual encounter with a professional courtesan. Beyond being a poignant account of one boy's coming of age, Vita Sexualis is also an important record of Japan's moral struggles during the cultural upheaval of the last years of the Meiji era.
Customer Reviews:
Surprisingly dull.......2006-10-07
I find it interesting that this work was banned--surprised not only because sex is not explicitly mentioned but because the overall theme of the novella is far from anti-establishment. Mori skillfully notes that while sex is pervasive in all facets of life, when viewed objectively the human obsession with sex is rather silly, making fools out of otherwise ordinary men.
Mori's technical skill being noted, this is a remarkably dry read. Other reviewers praise Mori's "intellectual" take on sexuality, but it goes without saying that essentially all human emotions (lust, happiness, sadness, fear, etc.) could be analyzed as necessary but ultimately banal biological functions. By removing all emotion and passion from this work, Mori misses a chance to establish not only an intellectual but an emotional bond with the reader. I might even go further and say that by removing emotion from this work, Mori makes this study of sexuality more sophisticated while sacrificing completeness of the subject. Perhaps given the time during which it was written, Mori worked with what he thought he could get away with (and even still it was banned!). However, reading it in the early 21st century, Vita Sexualis falls short of expectations. If you're interested in this talented author, I'd start with Maihime (The Dancing Girl), Takasebune, or Gan (The Wild Geese) instead.
The philosophy of sexuality.......2006-05-17
Ogai Mori was a deeply respected figure in Meiji-era Japan. Best remembered today as an author, playwright and poet, he also the Japanese Surgeon General and an expert on Military Hygiene. Secure in his position, respected and wealthy, in 1909 Mori took an unexpected turn and published "Vita Sexualis," a controversial title that was banned three week after its publication.
Perhaps the most shocking aspect of "Vita Sexualis" is is lack of sexuality. Ostensibly a record of burgeoning sexuality, written by a father to his son, so that his son would be better prepared for his own maturation, the main character is almost completely asexual, unable to understand the rampant behavior of his friends and contemporaries. He openly admits that he has never experienced the desires that seem to drive everyone around him. Women and men make themselves available to him, but he is defiant in his moral purity and never indulges.
What is most shocking is also most interesting. Like Ihara Saikaku's "Life of an Amorous Man," "Vita Sexualis" is a guided tour through Meiji-era sexuality, such as the famed Yoshiwara pleasure district. However unlike Saikaku's bohemian protagonist, Mori's man is strictly a spectator, inwardly mussing on why those around him take such joy in such base activities.
"Vita Sexualis" is sexual philosophy. It is an intellectual take, something which Mori excelled at. It stands out in a field full of devil-may-care exploitative literature in the same vein, and shows that one can write a serious and intelligent sex book.
Sexuality and the Intellectual.......2003-10-19
This book is supposedly a guide to sex written by a philosopher for his son. Actually is a semi-auotobiographical novel in which the Meiji writer Mori Ogai is able to describe his sexual maturation from the time he was a child to his early adult hood. This book is a fascinating read that gives the reader a close look at the early life of Mori Ogai who not only was one of the best early Japanese novelists, but also excelled in the medical field, becoming Japan's Surgeon Genearl. By today's standards the sexual activities in this book might not seem very explicit, but at the time it was rare for sexuality at all to be mentioned in literature.

Book Description
Every December, an envelope from the North Pole would arrive for J.R.R. Tolkien's children. Inside would be a letter in strange, spidery handwriting and a beautiful color drawing. The letters told wonderful tales of life at the North Pole: how all the reindeer scattered presents all over the place; how the accident-prone Polar Bear climbed the North Pole and fell through the roof of Father Christmas's house; how he broke the Moon into four pieces and made the Man in it fall into the back garden; how there were wars with a troublesome horde of goblins. Sometimes the Polar Bear would scrawl a note, adding yet more humor to the stories. No reader, young or old, can fail to be charmed by the inventiveness of Tolkien's Father Christmas Letters.

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
A sweet, very clever idea that the John Ronald Reuel Tolkien fellow
came up with to amuse his daughter. Definitely an interesting book for
little kids, old funny looking spidery handwriting, and all. I suppose
they probably rerelease this every year, with how popular he became
recently.
You don't know what you're missing.......2007-01-11
I am a big Tolkien fan but this book was new to me. It was a thrill to find and a thrill to read. I started over 20 years ago giving a Christmas book to my mother in November. I search for something special every year and the names on my Christmas book list keep growing. (I like to think it's because of my inspired choices.) LETTERS FROM FATHER CHRISTMAS has zoomed to the top of the list. The title doesn't do it justice. It is a marvelous story about Father Christmas, elves, polar bears, goblins and adventure. It also combines a family story and reflects a marvelous and moving sense of place and time. Pure genius. Get it for everyone on your list.
Santa Letters - Letters From Sweden.......2005-12-03
Heartwarming, inspiring, uplifting. I also recommend a service that sends Santa letters from Sweden (but return address reads: North Pole).

Wonderful Stories; Did Not Work in my Classroom.......2005-02-06
While I completely agree with the other reviewers about the beauty and complexity and subtlety of J.R.R. Tolkien's writing in this wonderful collection of his letters and drawings to his children, I tried using this with my middle school 6th graders. They didn't "get" it. Mostly, they thought the story was boring although they found the illustrations "interesting." I ended up buying several different editions of the book, including the one with the letters in envelopes, so that my students could have several different experiences with the text. They never enjoyed it, ever. Perhaps they are at too much of an in-between age and it just wouldn't have been "cool" to like it? As a lover of literature, I was disappointed. As a teacher, I have to wonder if I did something wrong in my presentation of the piece or if another group of students would have reacted differently...
This is based on the original edition........2005-01-12
Most children write letters TO Santa; few get letters FROM Santa (or Father Christmas, as British children call him.) The Tolkein children were lucky; their father was one of the top writers of the 20th C. and a fine--if totally untrained--artist.
These letters are little gems. As the years go on and the Tolkein children got older and more able to follow a complicated story, the letters get more 'literary.' Also, if you will look at the dates, as the situation in Europe heated up, so did Father Christmas' troubles with the Goblins. Children listen to the radio, too, and none of the Tolkein children could have been accused of stupidity; they knew, at some level, that something Very Bad was brewing, and I am sure that seeing that Father Christmas could deal with almost any crisis was comforting to them.
As for the illustrations, JRRT had a wonderful sense of color and line. He was very good at drawing stylized landscapes and interiors. Who wouldn't want someplace like Cliff House? He was less successful at drawing people and animals, probably because he knew very little about anatomy. Still, the portrait of Father Christmas wrapping a package is very fine; his features look somewhat Asiatic. I don't know if it is because JRRT had trouble drawing European round eyes, or if the Tolkein children were old enough to have seen pictures of Lapps and Eskimos and would have felt that such features would be appropriate to a man who lived at the North Pole. Also, the picture of the Polar Bear battling the Goblins to save the Good Children's presents was full of movement and spirit enough that one didn't mind the questionable anatomy; the same could be said of the illustration of the accidental flooding of the English Deliveries room.
If you have children in your life, get a copy. Younger children will love to have these read to them, while older ones will love reading them themselves.

These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise™.” Celebrate the fortieth anniversary of Star Trek® with the original mission logs chronicling some of the crew’s most bizarre missions and strangest encounters with alien races across the galaxy . . . where no man has gone before™.
The Counter-Clock Incident
The Enterprise’s first captain, Commodore Robert April, is aboard the starship one last time en route to his retirement ceremonies. On the way, Kirk attempts to save an alien ship headed straight for the Beta Niobe Nova.
Instead, the Enterprise plunges through the heart of the nova and into an alternate universe where everything runs backward. Day is night, stars are black not white, and time flows into the past as people get younger with every breath they take.
The Eye of the Beholder
When the Enterprise is sent to investigate a missing starship near Lactran VII, Kirk beams down to discover the Lactrans are giant, highly intelligent slugs, who admire humans for one reason: they make lovely pets.
The situation appears hopeless when the landing party is locked up as exhibits in the planet’s zoo. Amazingly, Spock manages to convince the Lactrans that humans are not dumb animals and they agree to let the crew go–on one condition. Kirk and company must become interstellar big-game hunters and capture the powerful, ferocious jawanda on a remote planet.

Dzogchen Essentials offers a collection of teachings which are principally about clarifying confusion, the mistaken ways we normally relate to our perceptions of environment, body, and senses. Rather than continue the habits of insisting on a solid reality, we are given skillful alternatives and practices and the method to integrate them with the view of the Great Perfection.
Dzogchen Essentials is for the dedicated Vajrayana student. Carrying on from The Dzogchen Primer, it contains a wide range of selections upholding the style of the simple meditator, including pieces by Padmasambhava, Tulku Thondup, Dilgo Khyentse, Dudjom, Tulku Urgyen, Sogyal and Chugyam Trungpa, Rinpoches. Additional sources and facilitator's guidelines enrich study groups and nurture the lone practitioner.

Dzogchen Essentials.......2005-03-24
"Dzogchen Essentials" along with its companion version, "Dzogchen Primer: The Path That Clarifies Confusion," are truly essential readings for those interested in progressing along the Buddhist path of spiritual transformation. In essence, these are compendiums of ingeniously selected and elegantly translated works from some of the great Tibetan meditation masters. Readings range from ancient masters such as Padmasambhava up to contemporary masters such as Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche and Sogyal Rinpoche. For the first time, these collections offer readers a range of insightful guidance and heart-felt instructions from Tibetan masters of the profound Dzogchen meditation tradition. These books are among the few in English that make available these precious treasures of Tibetan Buddhist spiritual literature -- making them truly essential readings.
A Ruse or Just a Mistitled Work?.......2004-08-10
I received this book today with the hope that it contained primary texts on the practice of Dzogchen. To my misappointment, instead I found a hodge podge of various "tantric" or "vajrayana" materials consisting of ngondro or foundational practices, general information on generation and completion stages, a few randomly placed songs of realization, etc. However, there was little Dzogchen materials. What I did find is that the title "Dzogchen Essentials" meant not texts or materials on "Dzogchen", but materials taken from the "Dzogchen Tradition" meaning the "Nyingma" and related traditions. It appears that Dzogchen which is a profound and serious practice tradition has fallen prey to popular trends or fads. Just like the word "tantra", it is now over used and is in fact being abused to sell or package Tibetan and related materials that have a possible undual flavour or esoteric content beyond conventional or basic Mahayana practices. Too bad, the book's title and pre-reviews held out so much potential for a possibly excellent publication. It appears the editor has done this before in an earlier work called "Dzogchen Primer". In that work there are good materials, but it is certainly not a "primer" on Dzogchen. It has tantra, mahamudra, etc. and just a few Dzogchen oriented materials. I wish authors would not just try to take advantage of the public, especially in the presentation of books of this genre that purport to be authentic treatises on a specific and serious subject area. One side comment -- If you want a book on general overall Vajrayana intructions, its not bad. However, if you want Dzogchen, look else where for books by Namkhai Norbu, John Reynolds, Longchenpa, Jigme Lingpa, Dudjom Rinpoche and others. There are many and they are authentic Dzogchen texts and practice materials, etc.

Picks up where the story left off...........2003-01-15
Marc and Shona have picked up where earlier books of the 1970's left off.
The half dolls showcased in their book are identified, some history is given along with maker's marks, and the whole thing is well thought out.
Given the recurring popularity of half dolls (they've never really disappeared) the creativity that was expressed in their design by German and French firms of the late 1800's-1930's is tremendous. The factories put emphasis on the finely detailed crafting of these porcelain pieces. Coincidentally, the timing and high point of half doll sculpting is around the time the Bauhaus art movement was in full flower.
Soon thereafter the German factories were nationalized for war efforts.
These wonderful little ladies and gents were all but forgotten until the early books by Marion & Werner were written.
Marc & Shona know their half dolls! The book is well-written, thoughtfully organized and keeps the fun in it's presentation. They've covered a wide variety of half dolls from around the world. Their second volume continues the thread through some lesser known firms.
Good job! Enjoyable read for the serious (and not-so-serious) doll collector.

Invisible Applique by Ami Simms.......2005-09-21
Very good book for beginners and even seasoned quilters. I never thought of doing applique the way she shows in the book. It's a little difficult at first but she explains it very well and with a little practice you wonder why you weren't doing it this way in the first place!!! Ami Simms has a great sense of humor which I enjoyed all through the book!! The humor alone was worth the price!!!
You CAN do it, too!! .......2005-08-17
This book is great. I have tried applique before and thought I did a pretty good job but this book showed me how I could do better and it was so easy. I actually checked this book out at my local library. I learned so much from it I wanted it to keep. I tried to buy it from the library. They wouldn't sell it. I am glad I found it here because my local book stores do not carry this book. If you have ever appliqued or are interested in trying out applique but are afraid you can't do it, wait no longer. Order this book - YOU CAN DO IT TOO and you will be very pleased with the results!!
For beginners or experts.......2000-06-29
Ami's techniques are incredible. Never again do I have stitches showing on the edges of my applique. Her methods allow you to create an applique seam that sinks into the work, instead. If you are a beginner, this is how you need to learn. And if you are an expert, this will help you improve. Detailed instruction and drawings are included and confusion is next to none. I lived in fear of this method of quiltmaking and could just kick myself for what I was missing! Reasonably priced as well. You can't beat it!

Book Description
This guide to needleturn appliqué compiles years of research on quality quilting materials, and hundreds of observations culled from watching experts and beginners at work. Distilling needleturn skills into five key techniques that are accessible even to novices, it also includes an analysis of the best fabrics, threads, and tools to use. Sequences of photographs of precise hand movements show how to create perfect stitches every time, and quilters can see exactly how the fabric, needle, thread, and fingers interact—with photos from both above and below the quilt in progress. In addition to traditional needleturn, quilters also learn channel appliqué, an incredible new style of reverse appliqué that transfers line drawings onto fabric. Beautiful examples of quilts, from traditional American appliqué to Tahitian tifaifai, are included, as are 10 take-along projects and a Roxanne Optimal Strand Estimator (ROSE)—a hand tool that allows quilters to estimate the thread counts of any fabric.

Book Description
Foremost blues guitarist of the '60s and '70s Mike Bloomfield writes the tale of his early days in Chicago, where he befriends great blues legend Joe Lee Williams (AKA "Big Joe"). Together they embark on a journey to the dark, smoky blues clubs of the Midwest, encountering Lightnin' Hopkins, Sonny Boy Williamson, Tampa Red, Kokomo Arnold, and other blues musicians along the way. A classic American adventure story, a must read for any blues lover or musician.
Customer Reviews:
Kind of bad but then again oh so good.......2001-08-16
Most of this book is kind of annoying - for much of the first part of it you wonder why Bloomfield, who was by all accounts just a brilliant guy, couldn't manage to write any better. The ending of the book on the other hand is great - featuring two pages that Mike might well have taken a mouthful of.
Norman Mailer plays guitar.......2001-07-10
That is, Bloomfield should have stuck to guitar playing, as Mailer should stick to writing. This effort in my view is basically just a ... of the Bloomfield name. Wofully lacking in content or a story line. Save your money for his recordings.
One Funky Book.......2001-01-15
Bloomfield's Me and Big Joe is a wild little book. It's a drunk and dirty account of Bloomfield's attempt to "live the blues" with Big Joe Williams, one of the stars of the Rediscovery period of the blues back in the early 60s, and the discovery that he may be able to learn how to play the guitar by watching Williams play, but there was no way he was ever going to be able to live in Williams' manner. The anecdotes are extemely funny adn poignant, and Bloomfield takes great joy in presenting his and Williams' very, very different lives and expereinces. The music pulled them together, no doubt, but Bloomfield never descends into cliches about bridging cultures and becoming soul-mates and so on. He stays on the ground, and in the process writes one of the few interesting works of blues auto-biography. If you want lots of PC uplift stories about Williams as a musical genius, go elsewhere. This is a book about musicians, not role models, and the picture ain't always pretty, even if it's enlightening, fun and defintitely wierd.
spare stunning story by blues guitar legend.......2000-04-18
Like being there, this story captures the feel of hootchhouse blues and the myths and legends that surround them. Fans of blues, Michael Bloomfield, and their great history should buy and read this book. Highly recomended

Hunting vicariously, while reading anothers life adventures.......1998-06-01
I first became framiliar with Walt Prothero's writting in Outdoor Life Magazine articles. I was very impressed by his ability to visually describe the country he was in, and the small details that most outdoor writers omit. Details like packing-out the venison, insects and temperatures. Most impressive are the questions I asked guides on my hunting trips that they could'nt answer...that Mr Prothero answered in the course of this book. This book of thirty hunting articles flows like fine fiction, but is non-fiction where the human-experiance has center stage. A great hunting book for people who cannot afford unlimited hunting trips west of the mississippi.
