4 out of 5 stars Perfect Entertainment.......2002-03-08

I agree with one of the other reviewers that this is not one of Anita's best, but it is still better than almost anything you can get out there. This is a sequel which I hope will continue into future books. I buy everything Anita Stansfield writes.

3 out of 5 stars Doesn't compare to Stansfield's previous and better books!.......2001-12-22

I have always been a dedicated Anita Stansfield fan. I have all of her books and have read them all at least twice! But lately, her books just haven't been as good as her earlier ones. This one especially. It was so predictible! Not to mention short, so all the events in the book happened so fast that it was just unbelievable. The relationship between Sara and Ethan didn't seem believable or even romantic at all. I felt reading this book was a complete waste of time, but you should read it if you've read the previous book in this series.

4 out of 5 stars Typical Stanfield Book.......2001-11-04

This book is the sequel to Where the Heart Leads. In it Jonathon Brandts sister, Sara comes to live with them. They also have a new hired guy living with them, named Ethan Caldwell. Now lets put our minds together and see what Anita would typically give us. Yep! that's what happens! But even if the plot was typical, it still was a good, quick read kind of book. I really enjoyed it, but Anita darling-get a new plot idea quick!

5 out of 5 stars Would make an excellent movie.......2007-03-11

Great story, very well written. The character development, especially Kestrel's, was excellent as were names of the characters and places. Very good plot, appreciate very much Carrie's writing style. Action, magic, artifacts, weapons and plenty of enemy encounters. It was similar to playing a RPG computer game, in the different tasks that were completed through out the story. One of the better D&D books I have read thus far.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best D&D books I've read!.......2006-03-18

I loved Carrie Bebris' Pool of Radiance. I have read it about 5 times and each time, it still entices me into a world of magic, heros, and fantasy. Anyone who loves D&D should really read this book and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Great book with a deep quest and interesting characters.......2006-03-07

I've been a huge fan of fantasy RPG games, including various D&D titles for quite a while. I picked up a collectors edition of Pool of Radiance: ROMD that had the pc game, some accessories and the novel by Carrie Bebris. I finished the game first and then decided to read the novel. Having played the game definitely added to the excitment of reading the book. Many of the big events coincide and enjoying the game allowed me to enjoy the book just as much, if not more.

The characters are very well developed and the setting/ scenery is well written. It was pretty much great from start to finish and I highly recommend this book to a fantasy novel or Forgotten Realms fan! It made me want to hop back into the PC game and play it more, even after beating it.

    5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2003-04-01

Pool of Radiance was a very good novel I read recently. I enjoyed it so much I recommended my friends to read the novel. Reading this book made me realize that reading is fun, well with the proper book its fun. I don't like to read subjects that don't interest me. The reason why I enjoyed this novel is because it's based on Dungeons and Dragons so it's very interesting to read.

The characters are unique and interesting, they all have their differences but they all work well together. My favorite character was Kestrel she was a thief that got her self into helping Corran a Paladin, Glenna a Sorceress and Durwyn a Fighter to keep watch on the Pool of Radiance. The funny part about Kestrel helping keep watch is that she didn't remember because she was drunk when she told this High Mage about the pool, so apparently she volunteered on accident. It's ironic that she is now helping the law but her whole way of life is breaking the law without getting caught.

The authors were able to hold my interests because it was such a good novel. The authors kept putting surprises everywhere, they also put a lot of fighting and they were very descriptive so I don't think that little kids should read this book. Pool of Radiance is three books in one and each book had different authors. They kept me on the edge of my seat for 90 percent of the time.

In conclusion I can say that I learned more about friendship and trust than I knew before. In this book there is a lot of verbal fighting between the friends but in the end they end up holding back their anger and keep going with their expedition. I already recommend this novel to my friends because they are into fantasy kind of novels and I'm sure that they will like this novel, and hopefully recommend it to their friends.

4 out of 5 stars Just like a computer game.......2001-10-30

At least this novelisation was done decently. A rogue, Kestrel, found herself inexplicably drawn into a quest in Myth Drannor to liberate the corrupted Mythal from a dracolich and its gang.

Strangely, while Elminster appeared in the background as the patron, he did not despatch more powerful adventurers even though he should be aware of the critical nature of the situation.

As story-telling goes, the writer made good use of newly introduced characters and gave them enough of "role-playing" such that their backgrounds were gradually fleshed out with consistency and sensibility. A paladin, a fighter, a mage and a rogue started out as strangers to each other, gated to Myth Drannor to pick up on a quest from a fallen group sent previously by Elminster. Like a computer game, they meet the easier foes first, gradually learning more about their quest, clues to the solution, and even found a sanctuary amidst the ruins of Myth Drannor to recuperate from their wounds. They even get to get new members as the story develops.

The author did it in a simple and straight forward manner, lending several twists customary to an RPG. Unlike traditional novels, this one took it from the computer game, without narrating any part from the adversary's point of view. The baddies were just there, having sprung from nowhere, with enough firepower to drive off the phaerimms and baazetus etc from Myth Drannor, but just careless enough to be taken by a small group of mid-level adventurers. Some inconsistencies here, but none really glaring that detracts from a good story.

    5 out of 5 stars So helpful!.......2003-07-17

I was having trouble with Pool of Radiance because there is SO much to do and everything is so spread out. I like to do all the quests and see and experience as much as possible. I got the book for the maps, so I could make sure I got to everything in the game. The book is incredibly useful for that - it has extremely detailed maps and tells you about every single creature/quest/item there is to find and experience in each section of the game.

It also does a pretty good job of describing the characters/skills/traits/etc... but I'm not much of a min-maxer, I just like to play the game. I give it five stars because it did exactly what I wanted it to do - gave me a map and some direction for playing.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Companion to the game........2002-06-09

I am a fan to Prima's strategy guides. They are indepth and thorough. Some of the games that are out now are huge, and sometimes you need some help. Look no further. Prima has you covered.

3 out of 5 stars This guide could use some improvement.......2002-01-06

While I agree with everything the other reviewers said about the description of character classes and the easy-to-read maps with great descriptions of the areas and details of exactly what you will find there, this hint book has two very serious flaws I found.

The first is that in all the "walkthrough" descriptions, in many of the places they tell you what to do to get through the area ONCE YOU GET INTO IT. But they do NOT say, for instance, "before you can get into this area you have to complete such and such quest." I thought I was at a serious impasse early in the game because the book described in the main halls that the word of the dragon was required to open one of the doors, and you had to talk to some creatures there to get the right word. When i first went there, THERE WERE NO CREATURES THERE. They did not make any mention of the need to complete previous quests that would activate the creatures in the area. This is not the only section of the book with this flaw. You can't walk through the areas as they are presented in the book, step by step...there are still a lot of things to figure out and finding the right hint can get very confusing.

The second bad flaw this book had was the incomplete index. For instance, I found something called a "stronghold key" that I could not figure out which door to get open. If you want to ask "what is the stronghold key and which door does it open" the "stronghold key" does not appear in the index, nor does "key, stronghold". Again, this makes finding the right hint you want very difficult...unless you know exactly the area you are in and look up the hint IMMEDIATELY after you find something new, the book is just a pain to search through for the correct hint.

If you just want a general overview of the game and area descriptions, and some good maps to follow, this is a good book to get. If you're looking for an answer to a specific problem, this book will only help you if you are willing to spend a bit of time searching through it...it can take time to find the right solution...very disorganized in that sense.

    1 out of 5 stars Why buy a beta?.......2001-10-28

Don't buy it, it's full of bugs. And if you buy it, wait with installing the game until they have released all the patches.
It crash often, the save games gets corrupted and worst of all, the uninstaller have been reported to making havoc with your windows register.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2001-10-09

This truly is one of the better guides I've seen in a long time. With Prima being the larget producer of such books, I generally approach these manuals with more than a little wariness, since the experience is generally hit-and-miss, but I have to say that the Prima guide for Pool of Radiance efficiently and effectively covers all the bases that a good guide should.

The centerpiece of the guide is the walkthrough for the game, which is fairly well written. Of course, considering the fact that this is a Dungeons and Dragons game that they were writing a guide for, they probably didn't have much trouble ahead of them (random encounters are rare, and the guide itself is written like a book and paper adventure key). The maps they provide are well rendered and easy to follow in most cases, and the occasional side tips that they offer are helpful, for the most part.

One thing that I would have liked to see is a little more focus on character creation and subjective advice from the book's editors. As is so often the case with these sorts of guides, the sections on gameplay are little more than reprints of the game documentation. A greater number of sample characters, some expanded elaboration on character design, or another fully illustrated sample party or two would have been a welcome aid. The point of these guides, after all, is to allow the player to more completely experience the game, and it seems as though a lot of potentially useful material in that regard has been cast off.

On the whole, however, the guide is still exceptional, with complete coverage of every location or encounter in the game and, if not exceptional, a respectable amount of character creation advice and explanation on elements of the gameplay rules.

Ganelon Silvermane, the genetically designed superhero of the Earth's fabulous final age, has rapidly become the most popular of all Lin Carter's creations. Brought to life prematurely, Ganelon's adventures in a world of crumbling empires, ravaging hordes, and marvelous relics of forgotten scientific empires are always edge-of-the-seat wonder novels—the best creation of the author of the Thongor, Green Star, and Callisto books, to mention but a few!

Now, in this fourth novel of Gondwane, the world's last continent, Ganelon Silvermane has offered himself as hostage to the worst band of barbarians to roam the plains. As a captive of the Horde, Ganelon rises to greater heights of heroism than ever before . . . and begins to assume the full power of his mighty being!

I found this book to be truly amazing in it's wisdom. The author who died in body in 1952 has truly wrote a post-newtonian book on transformation. The movie "What the bleep" has nothing to add over the wisdom and teachings of this book. The author has a complete understanding of the ideas of Candice Pert who wrote "Molecules of Emotion," which came out recently, but Paramahansa Yogananda was writing about these concepts over half a century ago. Paramahansa Yogananda takes it a notch further and brings in the spiritual domain where the real transformation occurs.

This book "Where There Is Light," gives great tools in the form of instruction in using meditation and affirmation to change the patterns of thought that have become like grooves in our brains. So many of us have been stuck in repeating the same habits over and over again and we have all felt the frustration and suffering of being a slave to habits we want to be rid of. This book gives the answer to being free.

This book is truly a gift of mercy and compassion for all those who truly wish to lighten up and start living a life of more comfort and ease. Reading and following the teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda takes the struggle out of life, and all for the small price of a paper back book.

5 out of 5 stars A Beacon of Light for Humanity.......2004-08-19

This is a wonderful treasure of a book that will help you to see the light behind the seeming darkness of any situation that you may be in. I have found it to be one of the few books that has genuinely helped me to rise above "negative" appearances, and to embrace the gifts that may not be so apparent while in the midst of change. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for hope and answers for more inner peace.

5 out of 5 stars Divine Truth and Light.......2004-02-10

Where There is Light will help you find the Light within to rise above any circumstance in your life where you might feel helpless or alone. A wonderful contribution to humanity that will bring you peace, and a way to find that peace within no matter where you are on your path.

5 out of 5 stars Finding the Light Within You.......2004-01-21

Where there is Light will endure for centuries as the Divine wisdom that is given in this book will raise your awareness of YOUR inner Light, and how connected you are to the Divine in your life.
I love this book, and keep it in my car to refer to. No matter which page I turn to, there is wisdom and enlightenment that always helps me stay 'as the Light' within. I highly recommend this book for the truth, insight, and upliftment it will provide for you...

5 out of 5 stars Perfect antidote for stress and our modern material overload.......2002-11-09

As one of Yogananda's advanced students once said, ''I don't know how anyone can keep his sanity amidst the pressures of this modern world without the help of a true spiritual guru.'' This collection of Yogananda's inspired insights into our divine nature - and the challenges posed by our oppressive materialistic environments - is a powerful way to keep a true spiritual master's guidance at one's side.

In a moment of distress or spiritual need, just open to any page and you will feel this master's wisdom lifting burdens off your shoulders.

Highly recommended... for both the newcomer to spiritual awakening and the veteran devotee. EXCELLENT GIFT for friends or family who may be new to Yogananda's brilliance or to Eastern spirituality as a whole.

4 out of 5 stars Two well written plays.......2004-09-10

It's interesting that the only two Craig Lucas plays I've read happen to be published together here. Both were surprising to me, particularly Reckless, which tied itself up in an emotionally and symbolically moving way. Blue Window is a very lyrical play. The juggling that Lucas did to write it is impressive in reading it, and the performance of the piece-where actors must time the simulateous speeches and cues from each other-would be very engaging and swift, were it done as it must be.

I liked Reckless better though. I think it's quirkier, funnier and uses images and styles of expression in a more theatrically thrilling way.

Blue Window had a Big Chill feel-"the party" being the device of a gathering. These characters are not old friends though. It is a gathering of contemporaries and an ensuing discovery that each remains an individual no matter what company they keep. There is within it an infinite philisophy and spiritual depth as each character urges toward transcendence. Reading Blue Window is very much different than seeing it would be. Upon a stage the seeming jumble of activity and speech clarifies itself as actors embody each character. As a read there is alot of juggling which morphed much of the personality traits into a kind of collective character essence.

I recommend them both, and must praise Lucas for two plays that offer what I know would be terrific theatre experiences, as they offer terrific reading.

5 out of 5 stars 2 Great American plays, full of thought and feeling........1996-11-26

These are two of the best contemporary American plays being performed today. BLUE WINDOW, reminiscent of Virginia Woolf's "Mrs. Dalloway", explores the possibility of sharing thought, words, and perception, through the device of a party attended by several disparate people. RECKLESS is a wildly funny and disturbing trek across America with Rachel, an Everywoman whose optimism is betrayed at every turn. Both can be seen as movies.

1 out of 5 stars Siodmak Deserves Better.......2004-07-29

Alpi's book is nearly an exact copy of Herve Dumont's excellent biography of Siodmak, which is published in only French and Spanish. She offers nothing new in the way of Siodmak's career, but merely restates facts Dumont had stated, and better. In fact, her book contains numerous factual errors whenever it strays of its blueprint. As a film historian,I can not recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars A sterling Hollywood director gets his due.......2001-12-19

In the annals of Hollywood, many superior directors whose works are well regarded by the critics and the public are often overlooked as individuals. The author remedies this situation regarding Siodmak with a detailed biography which has a highly useful analysis of the director's many fine--and quite varied in genre--motion picture productions.

This is a very worthwhile addition to anyone's library.

5 out of 5 stars Intelligent, perceptive analyses of director's films noirs.......1998-10-31

Although Alpi's book almost looks like a carbon copy of Herve Dumont's French study on Robert Siodmak (Switzerland, 1980)---even the structure is the same, the Alpi book however is superb because she does examine all of the films noirs of the great master of suspense as part of the chronology of Siodmak's life---and then adds a special section at the end of the book devoted only to the "noir" titles which contain many new insights not discussed in her earlier chapters. What intrigued this writer is her comparisons of Siodmak's American noirs to his earlier output in Germany and France. We agree, THELMA JORDON was Siodmak's last noir film and practically everything that came after proceeded downhill--but like Dumont, Alpi completes the director's output until his death. But unlike Dumont, Alpi could have included a filmography on Curt Siodmak, who exercised much influence over his brother's career and also better stills which illustrate the action of the noir films she describes. Although Alpi considers noir a "genre" but it is really a STYLE, and at times she is not aware how really well-known Siodmak was in Germany (in the early nineties, there was a complete retrospective of his films:FILMEXIL, EXILFILM---a cooperative venture of 4 film museums--in Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt and Hamburg in 1997) and also a German autobiography was published in Munich in 1980 entitled R.Siodmak, ZWISCHEN BERLIN UND HOLLYWOOD, I can only sing the praises of Alpi's work on Siodmak since it is practically the most complete, the most accessible to American scholars. But Alpi must realize there is also a linguistic community out there is multi-lingual--and so Siodmak's life and career is nothing new to us--but her careful scholarship in America is the best I have ever seen on this director. Although Alpi makes occasional errors---Preminger's FALLEN ANGEL was a vehicle for Alice Faye, NOT Gene Tierney---well, she did not live during the peak noir era herself. Nevertheless, Alpi's book is a terrifically readable work, full of interesting speculations (what would Hitchcock and Siodmak have talked about when they met, for example) and hopefully it will generate interest in film revivals and scholarship on other neglected noir directors like John Farrow, Edgar Ulmer, Alfred Werker and Anthony Mann. McFarland also brought out a new work on Jacques Tourner, another neglected noir director of the forties---so hats off to McFarland as well for giving us Alpi's perceptive and formidable work.
