Book Description

"She is tolerable; but not handsome enough to tempt me."

So begins the timeless romance of Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice. Jane Austen's classic novel is beloved by millions, but little is revealed in the book about the mysterious and handsome hero, Mr. Darcy. And so the question has long remained: Who is Fitzwilliam Darcy?

In An Assembly Such as This, Pamela Aidan finally answers that long-standing question. In this first book of her Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman trilogy, she reintroduces us to Darcy during his visit to Hertfordshire with his friend Charles Bingley and reveals Darcy's hidden perspective on the events of Pride and Prejudice. As Darcy spends more time at Netherfield supervising Bingley and fending off Miss Bingley's persistent advances, his unwilling attraction to Elizabeth grows -- as does his concern about her relationship with his nemesis, George Wickham.

Setting the story vividly against the colorful historical and political background of the Regency, Aidan writes in a style comfortably at home with Austen but with a wit and humor very much her own. Aidan adds her own cast of fascinating characters to those in Austen's original, weaving a rich tapestry from Darcy's past and present. Austen fans and newcomers alike will love this new chapter of the most famous romance of all time.

4 out of 5 stars pleasantly surprised .......2007-09-27

I enjoyed this book but didn't realize it was one of three until about halfway through and had to wait for the next few to come out. I enjoyed the writing style and felt that the author remained true to the original story. In all, out of all the Pride and Prejudice follow-ups I have read, I enjoyed this one the most.

2 out of 5 stars Fair reading.......2007-09-24

This book is ok,but it really stretches Darcy's character. Given his reserved character I cannot see him allowing himself to be so easily involved in some of the things he did. it is really a letdown. I thought it would be more on his thoughts of Miss Elizabeth.

4 out of 5 stars An Assembly Such as This.......2007-09-15

Pamela Aidan is good, too wordy, but good. She takes three long books to do what Austen did in one. But we all have our own Elizabeth and Darcy and, while Aidan's Darcy is on the mark, for me her Elizabeth is quite wrong. I quote: "He knew his own desire; it was already engaged in the person of one impudent, exciting, lovely little piece of baggage by the name of Elizabeth Bennet ..." Elizabeth? Our Elizabeth? Impudent, exciting, lovely little piece of baggage? I love Elizabeth Bennet for her intelligence and humor. I don't recognize Aidan's version at all. And she keeps referring to her as "sweet." Oh, and her curls dance in the breeze? Curls?

She also badly needed an English copy-editor. A word she totally misuses is "University," "at University." This is pure American. The English say "he's up at Oxford/Cambridge." There are two or three "gottens" lying around too. Again, pure American. "Not bloody likely" is 20th Century working class English and "Good show" comes from the RAF in World War II.

Oh, while I think of it, why in heaven's name does she refer to "Mrs. Edward Bennett?" No, no, no, no. And she talks of fields enclosed by "Wall, fence or wood." What, no hedges?

But enough pickiness. I like her Georgiana very much (despite the religion) and Dyfed Brougham is a great invention. He could surely carry a whole book on his shoulders.

The whole series is well worth reading.

3 out of 5 stars Good fun, although definitely skewed by 21st century romance conventions.......2007-08-29

Aidan does a good job of attempting to flesh out Darcy's side of the story. She does an especially good job of reinterpreting Darcy's interaction with Elizabeth from Darcy's point of view-- Lizzie sparkles just the way we would imagine she would in the eyes of an admirer. It does seem, however, that some of Aidan's interpretations of Austen's novel are skewed by more modern, romance novel conventions. This becomes especially apparent in the sections that Aidan does not have Austen's original work to provide plot and dialogue for her. In these instances, Austen's satire and sharpness tend to get shoved aside for devices such as the loyal and trusted (and of course, witty) valet, and Darcy's increasing fear of the husband hunting mamas (both of which are staples of historical romances, and therefore tend to fall into the category of flat, conventional, filler characters/devices). So, if you're looking for fluff, this is a good read, but if you want social satire, seek fulfillment elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars just to add my 2 cents.......2007-08-16

This book is awesome! I love how Aidan brings us Darcy's point of view, explains his reserve and family pride. Lovely how he mentally pursues Elizabeth and notices her fine points. This book really made it so clear to me why he would just pop off and ask her to marry him. This series actually fleshed out P&P in such a believable way. This is the first of three part series. 1st book and 3rd book are SO strong. You will not be unhappy you read these books.

3 out of 5 stars SICK.......2007-02-05

This book does have a very sexy girl in it but she gets raped in a very violent way. If you like watching women get raped then you will love this book. It also has alot of demons in it with a sexual connotation. The artist does know how to draw a womens body but the story line is rather sick and morbid with Druuna having sexual adventures with monsters. A very sick book. I would say the only thing good about it is that the artist knows how to draw a women.

4 out of 5 stars Fair adventure, fairer ladies.......2007-01-23

What's good about this book is quite good. The heroine, Druuna, is on a quest she doesn't understand, across a shattered cityscape filled with vigilante bands and diseased mutants. Except for one other female character that we lose early on, Druuna is about the only character that looks human, let alone beautiful. But Serpierie makes the most of that beauty, as her wardrobe gradually leaves her throughout the book.

This book is one of the inner chapters in a series that started and finished elsewhere. Although it stands by itself, neither explanation nor resolution are very strong. There are a few sex scenes, but most of them don't treat the lady gently at all - with one pleasant exception involving between her and her spirit guide, that part of the book is not to my taste. Still, it's fair adventure with gorgeous babe in the lead role, so it has at least a little going for it.

4 out of 5 stars Lost in Space...........2003-04-01

Continued from Morbus Gravis I, Druuna meets the ancient "Lewis" and learns the secrets of the "city" and the "upper level". Alerted to the threat of impending danger, Druuna returns to the city she knows, guided my Lewis, where she is entailed once again in a web of lust and danger. As the city moves and shifts around her, will Druuna ever be able to reach her goal or contact Lewis again? Can she face and escape the "lower levels"?

Once again, Serpieri creates a fantastic story that more-or-less closes the arc begun in Morbus Gravis I. His artwork continues to get better. We meet many new characters as well as revisit important ones from Morbus I, anyone interested in "Druuna", should get these two great volumes.

5 out of 5 stars A Mutant Nation...........2003-04-01

Morbus Gravis is the first book in a superb series of sci-fi graphic novels about a woman named "Druuna". In a violent and depraved city, tyrannized by a mysterious religion and a callus military, people live and die at the whim of bureaucracy and the hungers of mutants that crawl up from the underground. The population is completely reliant on a "serum" provided by the government to keep them from becoming mutants themselves, and hope for the chance to be sent to the "upper" level where the most healthy live. This is the city that Druuna calls home. A place where her beautiful body is her most valuable asset, as well as her greatest liability. Can Druuna survive this hell, while she struggles to save her lover from the disease that has claimed countless others? What is this city, and what is it's terrible secret that Druuna is about to discover?

This is a masterfully illustrated novel. Serpieri's beautiful linework is both lush and precise. He paints, literally and figuratively, a fascinating world that is tremendously dreamlike in its tone. For those looking for a clinical exercise in speculative fiction, look elsewhere. For anyone interested in a subjective, erotic, and metaphorical journey, this is a necessary read.

4 out of 5 stars Sci-fi meets erotic art.......2002-07-28

Morbus Gravis means "Grave (or deadly) disease." In this book from a series about Druuna, Serpieri's full bodied heroine, she is the only one that is healthy while everyone dies of a disease that turns people into sexually depraved monsters.
Druuna loves, runs, searches...all in in sci-fi setting that is full of weird and wonderful scenarios.
Serpieri draws Druuna to the fullest: huge [chest] and a great behind. I actually own the original paperback and still go back and read and look through it, still amazed at the attention to detail to the female body.
There are a few S&M scenarios that are not too explicit to turn off the softer reader.
If you like Serpieri, this is a must have!

5 out of 5 stars Help I'm Trapped In A Professinol Wrestler's Body.......2006-10-28

Help I'm Trapped in a Professional Wrestler's Body is about four kids Alex, Josh, Andy, and Amanda. They are going to Wrestling Insanity but they don't have anyone to take them. They ask a teacher to take them to Wrestling Insanity. The teacher is Mr. Dirksen; he loves wrestling. When they were in the stadium they had front row seats. Amanda wanted to rub it in their face that she got front row seats. But what she doesn't know is that they have front row seats too.
When they got to Wrestling Insanity the boys went backstage to see the wrestlers. They found No Neck Nelson! When they got to the stadium they sat right next to Amanda. When Amanda saw Josh with Alex and with Mr. Dirksen she said that she was going to tell everybody in school. Josh asked why she was at Wrestling Insanity. Amanda said she had two tickets.
The next day Amanda told everyone about what happened. She even told Barry Dunn. Barry wanted to go to Wrestling Insanity with Josh. When Barry found out that Josh went with Alex, he got so mad at him. So when everybody knew what happened with Josh, Alex, and Mr. Dirksen, he was so embarrassed.
I really liked this book because it is about wrestling. Another reason I like this book is because Josh goes in a wrestler's body and that is so cool. Then when Josh was in Brainiac's body, he had a match. He ran all around the ring because Brainiac was Josh. I will recommend this book because it is really cool and funny.

4 out of 5 stars Help! I'm trapped in a professional Wrestlers Body.......2004-04-27

This book is about a group of friends who want to go to a wrestling match and when they and when they get there their friend magically turns into one of the wrestlers. Some reasons I liked the book is that it has alot of advanture in it. Also I liked it for the images that they give you. One reason why I didn't like it was it was too fake for what I like.

The best part of the book is when the friends go to the wrestling match and go backstage to meet the wrestlers. They go and see all the wrestlers that wrestle and they are aloud to get their autographs.

The part of the story I thought was very vivid is the setting and the conflict. First is the setting, They descride the setting very good. For example is when they are walking backstage and they describe how the rooms inside looked.

Second is the characters. They also describe the wrestlers very good, like when theeir backstage and one of the wrestlers walk out of the room they describe how big and strong he lookeed.

Andy sneaks backstage and switches bodies using the mini- dits (a small replica that switches bodies of ppl). I am a fan of the late Dr. Herbert Lockyer's books. All the Divine Names and Titles in the Bible happens to be the one I most refer to when studying or preparing a talk. He has done the intial, exhaustive research of listing all the names of the Trinty and giving scriptural references for each as well as a giving commentary on them. Though, I tend to stay away from commentaries, I find Lockyer's to be very straightforward with scripture and exceptionally praise-worthy.

5 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Text that Needs to be Republished.......2000-10-19

How in the world could such a book be out of print? Does it reflect the mentality of Christians today, that they are more focused on themselves than on God? The publisher probably wouldn't take this book out of print unless people just weren't buying it. Well, people need to read this book. It is a hidden classic, part of a series Herbert Lockyer produced on the Bible. The names and titles (and attributes) of God are the very foundation and purpose of the revelation of the Bible. This book is comprehensive and an excellent resource for critical Bible study concerning the Person of God. Such a book would help restore the theocentric and Christocentric thinking and living that is so absolutely critical for correct Bible interpretation and Biblical obedience.

4 out of 5 stars Stories your kids will really enjoy!.......2002-04-05

I bought this title for my 4-year-old daughter knowing that the stories would probably be over her head. I really wanted the recipes, and I planned to keep it for later. As it turned out, she adores the stories, which all have an element of fairy tale and fable in them. She especially like the one about the Snow Queen's Unicorn. The stories don't talk a lot about being vegetarian, which surprised me. All the recipes are vegan, and there is a strong multi-cultural focus to the stories. I hope your children love this one as much as mine does!

Easy to follow directions. Great set up instruction as far as cutting, yardage etc. Really had a ball making these little gems!

                        5 out of 5 stars Miniature Heaven.......2000-03-31

I am new to quilting. For my second project I made the Log Cabin Garden, which is an absolutely stunning design. Then I made two more Log Cabin Garden mini's for the quilting practice. Now I am hooked on Mini's. As a beginner, I found Carol Doak's instructions thorough and easy to understand. Carol Doak takes the reader step-by-step from the beginning of the quilting process to the end. Her paper pieced foundation technique makes the impossible looking mini quilt a cinch to make. Guaranteed to be an idiot-proof project.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Its Kind.......1999-07-29

Of the 7 or so books on this topic I've bought on this topic, this is the best. The technique taught here - of trimming the edges before matching pieces - works better than what I'd tried to do from previous books. Furthermore, the designs are just down-right PRETTIER than those in most of the others. Patterns are a bit too small for my skill level, so I cheated by using a copy machine to "enlarge" slightly (125%). I'm absolutely delighted with the finished product.

It is very difficult in the field of archaeology to discern social and political relationships in the archaeological record--especially in non-literate cultures such as the prehistoric pueblo (Anasazi). This excellent collection of essays, edited by two of the very best Southwestern arcaeologists, is cautious in drawing conclusions from the record but also offers informed speculation on social and political organization. A good read for the interested layperson as well as those in archaeology. - Richard Schott, Ph.D.

Crow Canyon is a compelling literary fiction showcase for stories that are bizarre and beautiful. The settings are painted with words that deliver the smell and the feel of each place and tug on the sleeve of the reader to enter the jungle and hear the macaws and monkeys in the upper canopy or trudge in ankle deep snow in the mounatins following a wolf pack hunting a wounded elk. Crow Canyon delivers story telling with twisted endings and amazing imagination.
