    Book Description

A deeply compelling saga of love, jealousy, honor, and greed, And So Flows History (Yoksanun hurunda, 1947) depicts the relentless power of exterior forces on the individual lives of three generations of the illustrious Cho family—from the waning years of the Choson dynasty in the late nineteenth century to the tumultuous post-liberation era. The novel opens with a tragic confrontation between two classes: the rape of a young slave by her master, the respected magistrate Cho Tongjun. Within a year, the magistrate has been murdered by Tonghak rebels, and his two sons are leading the family to ruin—one on account of his blind adherence to tradition, the other owing to his collaboration with the Japanese. Only Tongjun's youngest child provides hope for the future through her marriage to a enlightened young teacher and patriot.

"[This] is the first modern Korean novel that defines, both in duration of its action and the issues it addresses, the trajectory of recent Korean history. . . . [Hahn Moo-Sook] devises a form, which can be characterized as a novel of ideas, in which each character is a symbolic figure, and which interweaves the lives of the Cho family with the social forces of the time. Enormously influential, it prefigures such themes as tradition versus modernization, the repositioning of gender, the redefinition and recomposition of class, the interaction between Koreans in Korea, and those in the diaspora that are taken up in later works." —from the Introduction by JaHyun Kim Haboush

3 out of 5 stars Fun adventure through Halruaa, with a few problems........2006-06-12

In "Magehound", Forgotten Realms regular Elaine Cunningham spins a tale of the magic rich land Halruaa, an area seldomly explored by Realms novelists. Cunningham is known primarily for her stories of the elves and their societies across Faerun, so this is a bit of departure from her standard comfort zone. Fans of Elaine's other books, while no doubt will be disappointed that her more well known characters are not present here, will be delighted that this book does have several elven characters who play center stage in the story, as well as a good deal of information regarding the legendary sky ships of Halruaa. Magehound chronicles the misadventures of Matteo and Tsigone as they have dealings with the movers and shakers of Halruaan culture. Unfortunately, it tends to get bogged down both by very poor editing and a tendency to get lost in the weird little details of Dungeons and Dragons that most people really aren't interested in.

The novel starts off strong, with a group of wizards carving their way through the undead infested Ahklaur Swamp, which has become a nuisance to Halruaa. Cunningham's use of description is good, and above the level normally seen in role playing games based fiction. She sprinkles little tidbits regarding Halruaan society bit by bit throughout the entirety of the novel, so that reader doesn't ever feel like they are reading a history book. The problems start to occur shortly when one of the main sources of conflict is revealed. A creature known as a "Laraken" is the source behind the undead infestation in the swamps. The Laraken is a one of those relatively unknown Dungeons and Dragons creatures that really shouldn't ever be used as a plot device. It's a weird, obscure monster, which is fine, but not nearly enough information is provided about this creature to actually make it engaging, or even mildly interesting, to the reader. Likewise, several of the main characters don't actually appear to have any driving force or serious motivation for their actions. While some of this is probably resolved in the next two books, it appears that several of the characters behave in certain ways just for the sake of behaving in those ways. The magehound Kiva, for whom the novel is titled, seems to be sneaky, conniving, and evil, simply because the author needed a sneaky, conniving, and evil character, even though Kiva really has no motivation to act in these ways.

Cunningham seems to have the lamentable inclination to associate law with evil, and chaos with good. The entire institution of Halruaan government is portrayed in a very negative light, with all the major players being either corrupt, overly power hungry, insane, or outright evil. The main character Matteo is constantly reminding the reader of how naive he is for believing in and actively working for the system. Matteo's chaotic counterpart, the thief Tsigone, is always correct, always has an escape route, is never depicted as having any naive notions, and is nigh on invincible, as she is both completely immune to and highly talented with wizardly magic. While Tsigone is there for comic relief at times, thankfully it's rather tasteful and never overdone in the style of the kender in the Dragonlance novels.

The individual responsible for editing this particular novel definitely fell asleep at the wheel. Words are spelled incorrectly and names are frequently juxtaposed together. When Cunningham writes about two characters in the same sentence, she tends to accidentally combine their names in the next paragraph. For example, if she writes about Matteo and Andris, the next paragraph will contain the word "Mandris". If writing about Keturah and Tsigone, the next section will have the word "Tekurah". A gaping hole in the plot continuity was also completely missed. Towards the beginning of the story Matteo directly tells Kiva that his friend Andris has discovered the solution to clearing the undead from the swamps in Halruaa. At the end of the story, Matteo and Andris, against all logic, then proceed to have a conversation in which they attempt to puzzle out how Kiva could have possibly known this information.

Despite it's problems, Magehound is still a fun read, and recommended to anyone who wants to experience a romp through the wizard ruled land Halruaa.

    2 out of 5 stars Meh'.......2004-01-03

I found this book to be pretty boring actually. I didn't think this book was original enough, and didn't feel at all attached to any of the characters. This is just another Forgotten Realms type book. I think if you want to read fantasy and something original, you should read RA Salvatore or Terry Brooks. Although RA Salvatore does write for Forgotten Realms, his books are much more original.

4 out of 5 stars The Magehound - classic Forgotten Realms.......2003-06-17

This book was a cool read. It has some interesting creatures, and I am not just talking about the laraken either. I have enjoyed reading Forgotten Realms books off and on for years. They are easy to read and enjoy. Elaine Cunningham is one of the best writers for F.R. since R.A.Salvatore. I am looking forward to reading the last two books in the series. Peace.

5 out of 5 stars Come visit mighty Halruaa!.......2002-12-15

As with most tales begun in a new and enchanting land, The Magehound begins with a hefty dose of introductions. Here you'll meet Matteo: Jordaini counselor, his counterpart Andris, a strange girl named Tzigone, and Kiva: an elven inquisitor that isn't what she seems. Then the plot kicks in, and it would do you well to keep up.

Author Elaine Cunningham demonstrates remarkable creativity and subtlety with her stories, and The Magehound doesn't disappoint. Behind all the magic and swordplay, something else is going on. But what? Keep reading, and you'll see.

While this novel is an excellent start to a great trilogy, I must say I wouldn't recommend it so highly if taken alone. To truly appreciate the Counselors and Kings saga, you must get to the conclusion! In a manner of speaking, the trilogy is just one long three-book story, and this is just the beginning. There's more- much more- to come.

    4 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2002-08-08

While probably not quite as good as Daughter of the Drow, this books is fabulous. It has very in-depth characterization, and characters are the best part of any novel.

The plot is good. There's more to it than battles. There are loyalties and pretended loyalties and confusion and secrets. I was eager for the next one to come out. It was interesting to see the sheltered Matteo learn and grow. I don't think Tzigone changed nearly as much. But I liked her anyway.

Given four stars only because the synopsis on the back is sooo far from the truth of the book that it kept me from buying it for a while. Like, when did Matteo ever think he was magical? He didn't.

This is a combined review of The paper back book and the comic from Dark horse, Classic star wars - Han Solo at stars end - Volume 5. This comic is based on the stand alone novelette written by the late Brian Daley. For those who had read AC Crispens Han Solo Trilogy (my favorite of the entire EU), Crispen left time in his story to accommodate Daley's stories about Han and Chewy taking a trip to the corporate sector. Virtually nothing is known about the corp sector except what Daley told us in his 3 novels about his favorite character, Han. One of those 3 stories is HS at SE.
This comic has good inking and binding but the pencil and artwork is of comic strip quality. I give the story a 5, inking a 3 and pencils a 2, then I round up because the stars are Han and chewy for 4 stars

5 out of 5 stars "Inspiration is my specialty!".......2001-02-11

Han Solo at Stars' End was the third Star Wars novel ever published, after the original film novelization and Alan Dean Foster's lively Splinter of the Mind's Eye, and yet it remains today, nearly a quarter of a century later, one of the best pieces of Star Wars literature ever published. This book is the first of a trilogy that has since come to be known as the Han Solo Adventures (not to be confused with A.C. Crispin's Han Solo Trilogy), which tell of some of Han Solo's greatest adventures in the years before A New Hope. In these books, Brian Daley has really captured the essence and character of Han, Chewie, and the Falcon as they were at the start of the first film.

The plot of this book is fairly simple and straightforward. After a run-in with the Corporate Sector Authority (basically the equivalent of the Empire in this sector of space), the Millennium Falcon needs some repairs, so Han heads to an "outlaw tech" base to get her fixed up. When he arrives, he finds out that Doc, the head of the techs, has gone missing, and that the price of the Falcon's repairs will be to find and rescue him. Along the way, Chewbacca too is captured, making the whole affair personal.

Brian Daley has really written an action-packed whopper of a Star Wars book here. There are no subplots to bog down the pace of the book, no Luke and Leia to follow around on their own quests. This is pure Han Solo adventure start to finish. There are original and inspired firefights, sometimes in zero-G, and we get to see why Han has his reputation as an excellent pilot and a quick-draw marksman to be feared. There's a dogfight in here that puts to shame most of what Mike Stackpole has written, some unprecedented maneuvers with the Falcon, buildings getting blown off the face of planets (literally!), and several very interesting characters are introduced, including a fellow named Rekkon who I'd like to see more of someday. Han and Chewie are always perfectly in character as well, and there is a droid duo introduced here that is even more unlikely, and - dare I say it? - at times even more amusing than Artoo and Threepio.

Brian Daley, in this and his other books has I believe done more for the Star Wars Universe than any other author since. In this volume he introduced the Z-95 Headhunter, dinkos, the Fondor shipyards, several of Han's future friends, enemies, and companions, the Corporate Sector, and many themes and sequences that future Star Wars authors will attempt to emulate with varying degrees of success.

In Han Solo at Stars' End, Brian Daley has created a masterpiece. Short but concise and relevant, this is one of the most fun, action-packed, and ultimately most satisfying Star Wars novels that I have read in a long time.

        2 out of 5 stars It's Okay.......2000-01-26

While the plot and the script follow the excellent book upon which this is based fairly well, the end results fall short of the mark.

Jessa looks kinda like she's described in the book, but the other characters aren't really recognizable, even Han and Chewie. While the ship renditions are fairly good, the only thing they got right was the Falcon -- there weren't any TIEs in the novel, and those little fighters in the comic aren't Z-95s.

The art is too childish, and the words are too big, and the coloring and detail is a bit dull. Still, all of this is somewhat overcome by a fairly exciting story and a fast pace.

Another plus is the low price. If you're into Star Wars, it's worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars a great story in the star wars fasion!.......2007-06-10

As a child of the 80s, it's only natural that I was a fan of star wars growing up. As a fan of books, it's only natural that sooner or later I'd get involved in reading star wars. Admittedly, while being a fan of the original trilogy, and SOME parts of the prequels, I never touched a star wars book or comic before in my life. A co-worker lent me this book some months ago. Recently with the whole star wars turns 30 celebration, I watched the original trilogy on DVD again and got 'bit by the bug' as they say. The same happened to me with the star trek 40th birthday, grabbing onto the original series on DVD as well as as many paperbacks as I could. Anyway, enough back story ;)

I was pleasantly surprised by how good this book was. I wasn't expecting that much but from start to finish, this book has that authentic spirit of star wars. And it centers around one of my favoirte characters, Han Solo.

The characterization is spot on. Han, always looking out for number one seems to have an uncanny knack of getting involved in situations where he ends up being the hero, whether he likes it or not. The ironic part of it is is that he's GOOD at it! This book carries that characterization out very well.

Just looking for ship's repairs and mock up trader papers, Han gets involved in a conspiracy involving the galactic Trade Authority in which 'enemies' of the Authority just happen to disappear without a trace.

The play between Han, Chewbacca and the rest of teh characters, both good and bad (especially the droids..we all know how he feels about them) is really fun to read and there's plenty of action in the grand star wars fasion that, as fans, we're used to and have come to expect. My next read is going to be Han Solo's revenge and I can't wait. Highly recommended to any Star Wars fan, hardcore and casual alike.

If you're looking for a good book in the Star Wars genre, this is the one for you. I read it first in 1979 as a teenager when it was released in paperback form and was enraptured by the story. This is Star Wars it its finest: well-written, character-driven, and strangely, no mention of the Galactic Empire.
Han and Chewie are hanging around and laying low in the Corporate Sector Authority, a small section of the galaxy that's self-governed and not allied with the Empire. It's also a haven for space pirates like Han and some friends of his to hide from the Empire.
I recommend this book because it helps provide some background for our favorite smuggler and his hairy companion and based on when it was written, it's well worth tracking down to read.
Check out the picture of the book cover I've downloaded. It's the original cover from the Science Fiction Book Club hardcover edition.

                        Book Description

Since 1914 Cambridge has published The Elements of New Testament Greek, a best-selling textbook for scholars and students of the Bible. The original book by H. P. V. Nunn was replaced and succeeded in 1965 by J. W. Wenham's book of the same title; now Jeremy Duff has produced a new book to continue this long-established tradition into the twenty-first century. This audio CD set accompanies the new third edition of 'The Elements'. It contains the vocabulary lists, reading passages, and paradigms from the book, read aloud so as to enable students to reinforce their familiarity with the Greek alphabet and the sound of the Greek words. This will particularly benefit those students whose learning style is strongly auditory, but will enhance the progress of many others by facilitating study even when away from their books.

                        Book Description

Have you ever prepared a wonderful dish, but because it contained beef or chicken, your daughter-in-law, the vegetarian, wouldn't go near it? The challenge of cooking for both vegetarians and nonvegetarians is becoming more and more common. To meet that challenge, Ron Pickarski, one of the most celebrated chefs in this country, has written the As You Like It Cookbook — a unique cookbook designed to help you find the perfect meal for today's contemporary lifestyles.

The As You Like It Cookbook offers over 175 recipes for great-tasting dishes that appeal to a broad range of tastes. Many of the easy-to-follow recipes use lean and luscious cuts of beef, pork, poultry, or seafood, but guide you in substituting vegetarian ingredients so that the dish will also appeal to vegans and vegetarians. And handy substitution guidelines enable you to turn any of your favorite meat, poultry, seafood, egg, and dairy recipes into meatless options.

So don't despair the next time someone asks what's for dinner. With the As You Like It Cookbook, a tantalizing meal—cooked exactly as your family likes it—is just minutes away.

4 out of 5 stars Delicious recipes with many options!.......2001-06-09

Mr. Pickarski has once again graced us with a cookbook filled with delicious recipes. But this cookbook is different. The reason I only gave it a 4-star rating is that I was a little disappointed that he included meat in some recipes. His attitude toward whole foods also seems to have mellowed somewhat since his first book, "Friendly Foods", was published. He now uses white flour and granulated sugar. However, most of his recipes live up to the Pickarski name as they are great-tasting and made with healthy ingredients. One thing that impressed me about this book is that the meat recipes always include a vegetarian option, and recipes including dairy always include a vegan option. This would be a good book for someone new to cooking as directions are given in a clear step-by-step manner and are very easy to follow. There is also an extensive section describing different ingredients with which one may not be familiar. Mr. Pickarski's latest cookbook is also a great help for someone that has to cook for meat-eaters (like I do). There's something here for everyone!

                        Book Description

PEZ made it OK to play with your food, and now those imaginative, colorful candy dispensers are sought after by collectors worldwide.

After PEZ candy and dispensers were brought to the United States in 1952, more than 250 different types of character heads were made. Licensed cartoon characters, movie and TV personalities, and original designs are divided chronologically into five series, usually indicated by patent dates on the dispensers. In this newly revised and expanded edition, most of the variations of PEZ dispensers are shown in 281 color photographs, as well as the premiums and store displays that helped sell them. The captions identify each item and give the current estimated values.

This book is a must for Pez collectors! I have a huge collection myself, and I still found some that I don't have. It even helped me find the value of my collections, and now I know how much I should be paying when I go searching for Pez. It also includes informative facts and history on these crazy little dispensers.

I checked out this book from the library to make a stuffed penguin, and enjoyed the book so much that I told my family to get it for me as a birthday gift! I am not a seamstress, but I did find the penguin pattern easy to use, and I look forward to making some of the other items in the book!

4 out of 5 stars Fun and Easy Tiny Toys.......2004-10-28

This is a very cute book and it has been a lot of fun making all the tiny toys it has to offer. The great thing about it is there are many toys to make, all of them are fairly easy and cute, and none of them take too much time to finish. All you need to make anything in this book is a little bit of spare fabric and a small amount of sewing knowledge. Most of the projects I have made from this book took me less then two hours total to finish, most of time even less than that. All in all, this book has been great fun!

My only complaint with it would be the weird way the author was trying to copy Beanie Babies. While none of her designs look anything like the famous Beanie Babies, all of animals have names like Beanie Babies (example: one of hers is called "Cassie, the Cow", which is the same naming method Beanie Babies use...the animal's name, comma, type of animal) and all of her animals have little rhyming poems (just like all Beanie Babies have on their tags) accompanying them on their introduction section. I'm sure the author was trying to be cute, but I found it annoying and unoriginal. If you can ignore this part, as I did, this is a fun book despite that.

                        5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2004-02-29

This book is sooooo easy to use. It is also great to carry around with you. I am twelve and was worried that I wouldn't be able to make these little animals, but it turns out that they are much easier then they look. This book is a must have!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book For Anybody Who Sews...or Anyone Who Doesn't.......2002-03-29

This is a really great book for anybody. You don't have to be experienced to understand how to do it because it explains everything from stitching to what kind of fabric to use. There are tiny animals to sew from all around the world. There is an elephant, a giraffe, a polar bear, a cat, a dog, a lion, a tiger, people, an otter, a parrot, and even a mushroom! There are 52 full size patterns. This book even gives tips on designing your own little creatures. The directions are very clear and easy to understand. The book also gives ideas of how to use them like making them into Christmas tree ornaments or using them as party favors. It even shows how to make joints out of buttons and how to paint the creature so it looks more realistic. This is a great book that is easy to understand and pretty simple. I know I've had fun with it and I hope you do to.

                        5 out of 5 stars A mini menaguerie.......2001-08-21

I LOVE THIS BOOK! It has patterns to make just about every little critter there is. Kitties, giraffes, ponies, scotty dogs, duchunds, monkeys lambs, kangaroos, skunks, moose, bats, armadillos, ducks, otters, tigers, bunnies, owls, penguins, sea creatures, people. The list goes on and on. Sizes from 3" up to 8" beanies. What child wouldn't delight in holding one of these little "loveys" in their hands or as a little "pocket pal" to take to school? The instructions are fairly clear. There are a few points I wasn't quite sure on (ear insertion),folding the head dart, but, figured it out. The materials used are quite inexpensive. Felt bodies(some are in mini fur fabric) and seed beads for the eyes. I prefer mini fur fabrics over the felt, but the felt is inexpensive. Also, for the 3- 4" mini's ,I prefer to use the 2 to 2 1/2mm black onyx beads from bead/jewelry suppliers or imitation black plastic round beads you can find in craft stores for the eyes. They are round and give more of an "innocent eye" look to the animals face rather then the uneven shaped seed beads the author uses, which I feel tend to make some of the animals eyes look a tad sneaky. Place the bead where the eye should be and pull the thread tight into the head so the bead is sitting in a little dent. This sinks the eye in a bit so that they look less "beady" and "popeyed" that way. All in all, it's a wonderful book with wonderful illustrations and patterns and I'm sure having one of these little creatures, or several, would delight any child. Adults too.

                            Book Description

For too long, the films of Woody Allen have been interpreted as expressions of deconstructionism, nihilism, and postmodern angst. In this pathbreaking new book, Mary P. Nichols challenges this, arguing that Allen's work, from Play It Again, Sam to Deconstructing Harry, is actually an attempt to explore and reconcile the tension between art and life. As witty and complex as its subject, Reconstructing Woody shows that Allen is immensely concerned with human ethics, goodness, and virtue.

4 out of 5 stars A good review of the artistry of Woody Allen.......2000-11-02

As a big Woody Allen fan I really enjoyed reading Mary P. Nicols "Reconstructing Woody". Nicols is a professor of political science at Fordham University, and this book is basically her in-depth study or "thesis" on the cinematic art of Woody Allen. She digs deeply into 12 of Allen's films, namely "Play It Again Sam", "Annie Hall", "Interiors", "Stardust Memories", "A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy", "Zelig", "The Purple Rose of Cairo", "Another Woman", "Crimes and Misdemeanors", "Manhattan Murder Mystery", "Bullets Over Broadway" and "Mighty Aphrodite". She looks at the artisty and craftsmanship of Allen's works and gives her own interperetations as to their deeper meanings, uses of symbolism, and Woody's obvious homages to classic art and literature. She also points out what I've told people all along...that whether he is using comedy or drama as his vehicle, Woody Allen is master storyteller who creates characters of great depth! The chapters on "Crimes and Misdemeanors" and "Stardust Memories" are especially intriguing and enlightening, so much so that Nicols has actually deepened my appreciation of those films. (Not that they wern't favorites already!) I would have liked to have seen what she had to say regarding "Manhattan" or "Broadway Danny Rose", but for some inexplicable reason they were not included. Now that four more Woody Allen fims have been released since the publication of this book, it would be nice to see Nicols do a follow-up which could cover "Deconstructing Harry", "Celebrity", "Sweet and Lowdown", "Small Time Crooks" and some of the older titles that were overlooked here. If Amazon ever offers such a book, I'll be the first here to buy it!

                            4 out of 5 stars Thesis.......2000-06-24

Nichols has basically written the equivalent of a term paper on the films and life of Woody Allen. That is not to say that the book is dull or only a collection of non-emotive facts about Allen. It delves deep to examine the many facets of his life and the films that he has created. For anyone who really appreciates Woody Allen's films, this would be the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Woody Ever.......1999-08-15

Nichols has made an exemplary contribution to film studies by integrating that mushy discipline with the rigor of political philosophy. She's surely smarter and better than Woody, but with her help we can see what is best about his art as moral and philosophical illumination.

5 out of 5 stars A profound and provocative meditation on life and art........1999-04-27

Professor Mary Nichols's "Reconstructing Woody" is a profound and provocative meditation on life and art that gazes at these issues through the lens of Woody Allen's films. Nichols's treatment is unique for its insight and readability. Moreover, she succeeds in establishing three truths in her book: 1. That film is as complex, philosophic and insightful a medium for reflecting upon life as any other literary genre, combining especially the novel's ability to recreate a detailed world and drama's ability to have visual impact. 2. That the literary/dramatic reflection of life in art is not simply "reflective" or "passive," but instead represents the artist's ability to see the world through "a" world. If that artist is thoughtful and talented enough, then we do ourselves a service by trying to enter into his or her lens to view our own world. Nichols persuasively demonstrates that Allen is an artist of that rank. 3. That (and this is a very old issue in the Western world) the "sophisticated criticism" of certain intellectuals may, in fact, be less profound than the art it tries to explain. Allen himself has clearly and funnily portrayed this in his films, and Nichols, by presuming that Allen has something to teach her and us, has produced an intellectual commentary that does not distort or render shallow his dramatic corpus. In short, in confronting Allen's art through Nichols's book, the reader will emerge with a greater ability to appreciate a worthy artist's work and the world that that work represents.
