    Book Description

Description: Waylaid is the story of a Chinese American boy who struggles to grow up in the grip of an overcharged sexual environment. With a daily routine that involves renting out rooms to johns and hookers at his parents' sleazy hotel, the narrator loses the concepts of friendship, family, and childhood. As he pursues his all-consuming quest to lose his virginity, issues of race, class, and sex cripple his sense of self-worth. It is a story told with a Gen-X-style bleak humor that doesn't pander to conventional notions of immigrant narrative. Waylaid doesn't cut a wide swath through Asian American literature. It is a switchblade in the gut to stories of over-achievement and success in America that ignore the human cost.

5 out of 5 stars Waylaid comes closer.......2007-04-17

Waylaid by Ed Lin is the antithesis of the typical (or stereotypical) Asian-American account of academic or personal success in America. Ed Lin describes a different slice of Asian-America - one told through the eyes of a twelve year old Taiwanese American whose parents own and inhabit a drab roadside motel in a nameless section of Jersey. If Los Angeles and New York are the epicenters of East Asian success, Ed Lin's New Jersey is the hushed corner of Americana where an alternative Asian saga unfolds.

The moldy motel where our narrator relates his experience is populated by a randy cast of characters: hookers and johns, transient war veterans and overbearing Asian mothers. The narrator's preoccupation with losing his virginity amidst the comings and goings of the motel's sexual clientele revealed a side of my own self which identified with the trappings of obsession. Much like him, the exposure to sexual imagery turned me on at an early age to a decidedly adult subject.

After reading Lin's gorgeous piece of fiction, the greatest comfort is in the knowledge that we understand each other: both of us grew up in the shadow of Asian American stardom.

    5 out of 5 stars Way Impressed!.......2006-12-30

Lin tells an amazing story that is devoid of pretense and is richly heartfelt. To see such honest writing, especially in a debut novel, is quite rare these days. This coming of age story also rings true because his dialogue is always appropriately calibrated. Highly recommended!

    5 out of 5 stars A classic bildungsroman .......2005-02-19

This novel of a young Chinese American is a classic bildungsroman in the Bukowski "Ham on Rye" sense. America in the 70' and 80's suffered from a dilapidated post-vietnam depression that is captured very accurately here. You can see the paint rotting off the wood in Lin's world. His world is gritty, reminding me of the LA suburb that Bukowski describes and the contstant excess he was faced with as well. He is faced with prostitutes on a daily basis. Older men befriend him and treat him like an adult; only to fall to vice and the police later on. In some ways, this book is a mirror reflecting so many struggles people face in pulling themselves from the mediocrity or our childhood years.

5 out of 5 stars A Voice That Begs to be Read.......2004-09-28

WAYLAID does exactly that to readers. It takes them on a journey ostensibly to the gritty world of the Jersey Shore back in the 1980s but really to the mind of a 12-year-old Chinese American boy who's stuck manning the counter of his parents' fleabag motel.

To some, that description might sound depressing. But to others, it's the recipe for drama. And even to some 12-year-olds, a dream job.

Whatever the case, the book sucks you in into a world peopled by unforgettable characters. The strongest trait of the book, however, is by far the voice of the protagonist. It's a refreshing air of irreverence filled with longing that forces you to read on.

If you're into books about yuppie Asian American success stories or Asian American versions of chick-lit, complete with at least a dozen references to various Korean dishes, this book really isn't going to do it for you. But if you want to read a book that's real, WAYLAID is about as good a start as you can get.

This book is a book that I wish I could have written. It's genuine and it's got heart. And on top of everything, it has tons of laugh-out-loud moments that will delight you even in the face of the dark realities it depicts. It also helped me to write LAS CUCARACHAS, my second novel.

    5 out of 5 stars great book.......2004-05-16

A beguiling and bittersweet coming-of-age tale told from a unique perspective. At once bawdy and emotionally resonant, squalid and life-affirming. A great book, all in all.

I have always thought of the Daily Planet newspaper more as an actual character than merely a setting in Superman stories, and "Superman: Daily Planet" nicely covers the longtime relationship between the Man Of Steel and the Great Metropolitan Newspaper. Okay, so Superman actually interacts with Planet staffers Perry White, Lois Lane and Jimmy Olson -- when they are working on news stories, to me they ARE the Daily Planet. If you're a Silver Ager who's trying to catch up with what's happened sine you stopped reading comics, read this volume. If you're a younger reader who's interested in the history of Superman, read this volume. If you just enjoy stories about Clark Kent's workplace, read this volume.

Sometimes, the story selection for a trade paperback collection will make sense, and sometimes not. Either the stories work together, or they don't. I count on the editors at DC to know the difference in order to provide me with an enjoyable read that is worth my money. SUPERMAN: THE DAILY PLANET is a case where they didn't quite succeed. The editor obviously meant well in providing a selection of stories that focus on the staff of the Daily Planet newspaper - primarily Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, and Perry ("don't call me chief") White - than on Superman. I think it's a great idea for a collection, as these characters play a large role in Superman's universe, especially during the 1950s through the late 1970s, when titles like SUPERMAN'S GIRLFRIEND, LOIS LANE, and SUPERMAN'S PAL, JIMMY OLSEN were big sellers. This is really the ideal period on which the book should focus. These classic stories are short 8- to 10-pagers, very direct, and are primarily conundrums or mysteries of some type. While they may be absurd at times, they have an innocence and classic appeal that just can't be found too often in today's comics. For example, when Perry White has super powers bestowed upon him by "super cigars", or when Jimmy Olsen dresses in drag and becomes a mobster's girlfriend in order to find a stolen jewel, you can't help but roll your eyes and play along. It's pure camp, but this is one of the elements that makes these stories so appealing. Unfortunately, DC chooses to follow 14 stories from this worthy period with 3 final selections from fairly recent comics (1998 up to 2006) that have none of this appeal. In fact, the jump from the classic stories to the modern stories is really jarring, showing how the recent Superman comics have lost much of the wonder of the older comics. The two types don't work well together, and the differences in plotting, writing, and art styles are a pain to behold. Consider the abovementioned lighthearted fare, and then abruptly jump ahead 20 years to long-winded, directionless tales, and Lucy Lane considering an abortion. It's a pairing that doesn't work, and it's a disheartening change that I can certainly do without.

Anyway, the trade reprints stories from ACTION COMICS #211, 429, 436, and 461; SUPERMAN #280; SUPERMAN'S GIRLFRIEND, LOIS LANE #17, 24, 45, and 56; and SUPERMAN'S PAL, JIMMY OLSEN #42, 63, 75, and 124. It features work from Al Plastino, Wayne Boring, Curt Swan, Elliot S. Maggin, Louise Simonson, and others. All in all, the book is a good effort from DC at expanding their selection of Superman trades, but they really should choose their representative stories more carefully.

This book goes into situations Superman encountered many years ago but still explains them with 100% accuracy. 2 out of 5 stars Not Starbridge's Best.......2001-08-25

I had read all of the Starbridge novels before this one, and was excited to find this one by accident in a local bookstore. However, when I actually read it I was disappointed. The Starbridge universe has always seemed to me to be creative and different, both in the various species that are found and the various ways that they interact. This book had too many rote characteristics of a novel written solely to sell. It felt like the author(s) decided, "People like reading about violence, so we have to include some fights... And they like reading about sex, so we'll throw in an affair [which worked out much too neatly, by the way; in a real relationship, Mahree's sexual fling with someone else would have had some negative affects. I know that some authors write about all sorts of unrealistic relationships, but I liked these particular characters enough to be annoyed by having someone mess with them like this] ... And let's throw in some generic traits that have been in the other Starbridge novels. Hmm; which shall we choose?...." instead of actually having a good, workable idea for a new story and a new people group. As I have mentioned, I greatly enjoyed the first several Starbridge novels, and I was also fond of the one after "Ancestor's World", so I'm guessing it was the co-author.

4 out of 5 stars Another Great Starbridge Novel!.......2000-04-22

I discovered the Starbridge series last summer and have loved every book in the series! A.C. Crispin brings interesting *female* characters to the science fiction genre, which I, as a teenage girl, am thankful for. Instead of focusing on the goings on at Starbridge with it's students, Ancestor's World focuses more on what is happening with Mahree as she investigates the murder of a member of an archeological team on the planet Na-Dina, a nice change from previous books.

Cultural historian Yvonne Seng's first encounter with men in black dresses was on the Nile train as it chugged through Egypt. She was a young woman then, facing a divorce or suicide--she wasn't sure which. And that's why the barren desert of Upper Egypt called to her. The dangerous pilgrimage through a harsh oasis would test her will to survive. As fate would have it, she met Nuweiba on the train--the esteemed Catholic Coptic Bishop of Asyout and Upper Egypt and the first of many holy men who would radically influence her destiny. As she spoke with this humble spiritual leader, he confessed that he was dying. "Promise me you will return one day," he asked Seng. "Then you will see the future." Seng agreed, but it took 15 years to deliver her promise. "Instead I tried to climb the greased ladder of academia and pretended to forget the promise." One night the dying man's request returned to her--forcing her to sit upright in bed and immediately plan her return pilgrimage. This time she would meet with the holy men of the Middle East and ask them to speak to the future. Her adventurous memoir takes us into the private chambers of a grand Muslim sheikh, into darkened churches, ancient monasteries, and modern apartments as she meets with the religious visionaries of the Middle East. The men in black dresses speak about global concerns--pornography on the Internet, disrespect toward elders and children, the disturbing spread of McDonald's culture, and the possibility of miracles. This is an outstanding armchair pilgrimage, filled with vivid "being there" scenes as well as lasting insight. Seng manages to unite vastly different religions, histories and cultures through their common spiritual ambitions. --Gail Hudson

                    Book Description

If we pause long enough, we can hear, above the din of our planet's rapid globalization and technological advancement, the quiet voices of spiritual leaders from ancient faiths. Middle East historian Yvonne Seng asks, What can these modern Desert Fathers with their long history of survival advise us on the future of our planet? Her intellectual quest rapidly becomes a personal journey that turns her Western training and perceptions on their head.

Men In Black Dresses takes the reader behind the walls of desert monasteries, Sufi enclaves, ancient cathedrals and mosques -- where the author knocks, uninvited, and waits for the wise men to allow her in. Once inside, they discuss the universal concerns of the environment and the Internet, the building of a global community, and the education of coming generations, as well as the state of the human spirit.

2 out of 5 stars All the depth of the Celestine Prophecies.......2004-04-03

Well I suppose the smart ass title should have been a tipoff. This book manages to both flatten and drain and all the depth out of people whom have cultivated depth their whole lives. The author has adopted the style of interviewing where the interviewer spends 3/4 of the time telling you about themselves and their reactions to what the person they are interviewing says. It is a distracting and in this case disappointing technique whereby the author manages to reduce holy men to trivial quotes with all the spiritual depth of the Celestine Prophecies. Because of this artifice the book distorts more than it illuminates and should be avoided by anyone looking to encounter contemporary articulations of authentic Christian desert wisdom. Look at Matta al Maskin (Orthodox Prayer) himself rather than this pablum about his brethren.

4 out of 5 stars surprising agreements on spiritual life.......2004-02-17

The most faithful-looking men I see on TV wear dark robes and carry automatic weapons. I simultaneously admire their faith and fear their wrath. I wish I could turn down the volume and sit quietly with these men; I yearn to hear whatever it is they are literally dying to say.

Men in Black Dresses provides such an opportunity. Author Yvonne Seng trekked to monasteries, mosques and religious enclaves in order to listen. She sat with leaders ranging from The Grand Sheikh of Islam, spiritual leader to the world¹s billion Sunnis, to His Holiness Pope Zakka, head of the world¹s second oldest Christian church.

"Throughout history, dogma has been mistaken for knowledge," a leading orthodox archbishop told her, "social division and problems can be traced to the entanglement of dogma in our modern life social problems are also theological problems."

A professor of peace and Middle Eastern studies, Seng discovered surprising agreements among the Muslim, Christian and Jewish leaders who spoke to her. They agreed that modern spiritual life has become distracted, that East and West alike have forsaken the heart for the ego, and that as our leaders confuse true power with material gain, the world is becoming a very dangerous place.

                    4 out of 5 stars totally riveting.......2004-02-17

"...totally riveting. Yvonne Seng is a natural born storyteller... fearless and witty style. Charging ahead solo where most of us would fear to tread, Yvonne interviewed a fascinating array of spiritual leaders, mystics and holy men and women to seek spiritual guidance for our time. Their answers were surprising and profoundly important."

4 out of 5 stars Seeing Things Differently.......2004-02-17

"Men in Black Dresses: A Quest for the Future Among Wisdom Makers of the Middle East" I am reading a wonderful book. It's one of those gems that every time you pick it up, it instantly carries you into an exotic, space of anticipation. I find myself leaning forward emotionally, eager to see what I am going to learn - what I am going to see differently, with new clarity.

It's kind of interesting, because I forget about how great it is after we land or I fall asleep. I've been carrying it around in my bag now for a week now and each time I look at it - "Men in Black Dresses" - I remember the basic premise: author Yvonne Seng working her way through interviews with Egyptian Muslim sheihks leaders and discovering insights about Islam, and it sits there, kind of flat and academic.

But each time I get finally get settled into my Boeing seat, and before we reach 10,000 feet where I can get out my laptop, I open up the black dress book and within two sentences I'm in Egypt - in a bazaar, or somewhere contemplating some deep truth or paradox. . . . experiencing, through her extraordinary prose, Dr. Seng's odysseys and forays in search of truth and meaning.

This woman can really write. It's like a great novel - about real experiences, but focused on a search for truth. Most nonfiction books are not really "literature". They're not great stories, capturing you and moving you into sights, sounds, and smells of some other interesting place and introducing you to people you can really see in your mind. So, it's really rather extraordinary to find a book of big, great ideas that is also a really interesting story as well.

You should buy Yvonne's book. You'll learn a lot about Egypt, Islam, the Coptic Orthodox Church, Syria, yourself . . . and you'll like it.

1 out of 5 stars Surprisingly (and extremely) disappointing.......2004-02-11

I ordered this book, based on the glowing New York Times Book Review article and the reviews here. I'd expected to read an informative, insightful, and well-written book. That is not at all what I found.

First, the writing style. The breezy, casual style she slings about would be well-suited to a book about rock music or a character in an Evanovitch mystery, but hardly suited to a fairly serious topic by a supposedly credentialed scholar. It was a style out of sync with the subject material. -I wasn't necessarily looking to read a scholarly book, but I did expect this to be an intelligent book (which it wasn't.) I also found it difficult to like Dr. Seng, who comes across as a self-promoter, trying very hard to appear "cool".

Second, -the substance of this book. Everything is black and white -- no nuances, no complicated characters. All the religious leaders she meets are magical, wonderful demi-gods. The questions asked in her interviews with them were at a grade-school level -- totally uninformative. I found it difficult to believe a well-educated person could write such a superficial and one-dimensional account.

I managed to get through the book, through sheer stubbornness and the hope that it might improve at some point. (It never did.) One of those books where you're relieved to get it over with so that you can move on to something better. I'm in perplexed total disagreement with the positive reviews here.

If you are anything like me, you know next to nothing about fruits and vegetables. I don't know the nutritional content, when food is in season, or what it should look like when I buy it. This book explains EVERYTHING that you need to know, and it is very organized and written in an easy to read and understand manner. Every food covered has it's own chapter, and is in alphabetical order. It tells you how to know when you are buying a quality product, the best way to prepare it, the pros and cons of different varieties, and much more. It is the most complete guide to produce that I have ever seen. I will probably keep this book handy forever, and will reference it all the time. My advice? Buy this book!!

5 out of 5 stars It really works! :))) .......2005-04-13

Finally! ..a book on coordinating fabrics which actually works in reality too!! I've purhased many books on color, fabric, texture, you name it! Then, I tried to put togeter a theme for my livingroom which never worked. I've purchased many kind of fabrics (wasn't cheep either!) only to found out - after I took them home - that they didn't look right togheter with the rest of the fabrics I already had. I loved every one of them (separetely).

I was also sceptical about this book since it only contains 60 pages + the practice stickers.

Then today, I've finally received it and I've read it in an hour and I understood the many factors to consider to put a room together successfuly. Throughout the book, everything is explained step-by-step and it was very easy to understand. This book was written for the lay person or the novice decorator.

At the first half of the book you learn about the 6 components, which are:
color, pattern size, pattern shape, contrast, texture, sheen.

The secont half of the book contains the Fabrique Technique System Guide. Here, you'll learn the Fabric placement (best ways and places to use the fabrics you've selected at the first half of the book by the 6 components).
At the end of the book, there are worksheets where you can practice what you have learned and you'll be able to build up your theme with your real fabric swatches as well as the stickers provided in the book.

It also has a yardage calculation worksheet and a very useful yardage chart for sofa, loveseat, chair, ottoman, and so on.
On the whole, it did worth the $20 I paid for this (only) 60 page book. Well, in this case it's true that quality counts not quantity after all...

Finally, somebody mentioned that the pictures in the book are outdated (80's) and I agree with that too. It'd have been nice to see updated interiors.. however, don't let this stop you. You are only learning the techniques here and you can buy many pretty picture books out there for inspiration but non will teach you how to put a room together successfuly soft furnishing wised!

What a great book, all the books out there really didnt help me. This book really did. After reading it, it gave me all the confidence that I needed. step by step it was really easy.I bought Christopher Lowell book and what a nightmare.I also bought that Waverly book that helped a little but not much. This book saved me alot of money. Start with one fabric it said, so I did . Thank You Jen Raffo

If you struggle with using color, pattern and texture in a room, but don't know where to begin, Fabrique Technique is the perfect starting point! I recently saw Jennifer in Hartford, Connecticut where she gave a class on how to achieve a decorating scheme from the selection of a single fabric, showing how you get your color scheme, all other coordinating fabrics, wall & floor colors, as well as helping fugure out your own personal style. I don't know of any other book that does that, and she made it easy and fun! I can't tell you how many magazines and books I have purchased that sounded good, but were empty of information--they told you absolutely nothing about how to decorate. Fabrique Technique's photos were beautiful, gave me lots of ideas of how to use different patterns and texture in a room.

1 out of 5 stars A review for people with taste........2000-09-12

This book gets one star because there is no negative rating available. The cover of this book is beautiful, but deceiving. Inside is an array of outdated pictures of interiors decorated in furnishings that look like they came from Rent-a-Center. We're talking vinyl with 1$-a-yard fabrics. Don't waste your money unless you have bad taste and need help making it worse.

". . . this collection has a narrative and descriptive thrust that is centered on the social and economic history of African Americans in the United States and presents a kaleidoscopic view of Black life and cultural history. The insistent integrity of the works included reflects a deep understanding of African American social values and celebrates with pride both a humble and a noble existence."

African American art is reaching a wider audience today than ever before, as major exhibitions tour museums around the country. Inspired by the exhibit Hidden Heritage: Afro-American Art, 1800-1950, Harmon and Harriet Kelley began collecting African American art in 1987 and have amassed a collection that represents a broad range of genres and artists from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Profusely illustrated with color and black-and-white plates, this catalog accompanies a traveling exhibition of the Kelley collection, comprised of 124 works by 70 artists, including Edward M. Bannister, Elizabeth Catlett, William H. Johnson, Emma Lee Moss, Charles E. Porter, Henry O. Tanner, and Dox Thrash. Essays on "Nineteenth-Century African American Art," "Twentieth-Century Artists," and "American Art and the Black Folk Artist" build an illuminating context for the works, restoring them to their rightful places in the history of American art.

                            Book Description

In accord with the fascination that surrounds Hollywood celebrities and the increasing popularity of celebrity grave-hunting, this book serves as a guide to the final resting places of the many celebrities who are buried in Los Angeles County, California. It is arranged by cemetery, and provides the following information for each person: age at time of death; date and place of birth; date and place of death; cause of death; obituary headline of the deceased; inscription on grave marker; location of grave; and a film that the celebrity appeared in. Includes appendices, web site information, bibliography, and index.

Having read most of the books published re: celeb grave hunting, I can easily say this is the very best. Mr. Ellenberger has managed to consolidate all the positives contained in the books that have preceded this one, added additional information and new entries, and has come up with the ultimate grave hunting guide for the Los Angeles area. He has clearly researched and verified his information and relied on additional information supplied by various knowledgeable contributors. Information includes dates and locations of birth and death, grave location (cemetery, section and plot numbers), cause of death, and identifiable screen role(s). The only possible shortcomings are lack of cemetery maps and pictures of the deceased, and these are probably due to the high publishing costs associated with these features. The one thing that I really liked was the addition of many fine actors who never attained star status such as Harry Davenport and Sara Allgood. This is absolutely great for all diehard movie fans out there.
