A Florida native accquainted with Ms. Fowler, I am not without prejudice. However, Fowler's magic is her uncanny ability to unlock the mind of young Bird, her well named narrator, and of Bird's place in her own unforgiving world. By connotation, Bird(s) can be delicate and defenseless as well as powerful symbols of freedom and beauty. Fowler's "Bird" sees from on high and is the embodiment of reslilence; a child in the body of Shamen. Bird absorbs all that is rich and worthwhile from the barren and violent reality of her young life. She survives because she can grasp, in the smallest moment, a fragment of hope woven, by irony, into humor and insight.

Like the typical southern novel--drink, violence and poverty...
But it becomes richer and fuller as it unravels itself into lovely but somewhat predictable prose.
The characters are well-developed but the strength, in my opinion, is how Fowler puts words to incidents -- they are downright sensual.
Reminds me a bit of "Bastard out of Carolina".
This was my first Fowler reading and I will read another -- this one was enjoyable but like I said--somewhat predictable.
A Great Book That Teaches.......2005-08-10
No, this book isn't the easiest thing in the world to read. You find yourself wincing at the abusive language & physical violence these characters all endure. Yet, something shines below the surface in this story. Granted, you may have to get a shovel & start digging for it, but all the better. I love reading a novel that teaches me something. Well, this one taught me to always be true to yourself, to always listen to that inner voice, and never to doubt for a second that you're worthy of love.
I became enchanted with Avocet ("Bird") & would even like to see a sequel of her further adventures.
This book reminded me a lot of "The Secret Life Of Bees" which I also loved!

My Favorite Book!.......2007-08-29
I won't give you a big overview of the book, other people have done that. Let me start by saying this is not a light, mindless read. It is deep, passionate and spiritual. It is full of love, beauty, suspence and history and much much more! Judith Tarr is a genius. She has given me a love for history that I didn't know that I had! This is one of my favorite books I just love it!
High quality medieval fantasy.......2005-12-14
The Hound and the Falcon by Judith Tarr is a stand-out in the genre of medieval fantasy novels. As a real live medievalist (rather than a Ren Fair nerd), I was very pleased to see how well-researched and accurate Tarr's work is. Every detail of the philosophical curriculum studied at the monastery in this novel was correct to the time period-very impressive!
These three short novels, bound together in one volume, tell the story of a medieval monk who is not quite human. In these alternate Middle Ages, the "Hounds of God" (thinly disguised Dominicans-do your Latin etymology, people!) seek out and destroy the elven population. The main character Alfred presents a fascinating conundrum, in that he is a devout Christian who believes in his faith, though his faith tells him that he, as an elf, has no soul. The first of these three stories focuses the most on Alfred's spiritual crisis, and thus I thought it was the best of the three. The other two continue with Alfred's story, but they are more like typical medieval fantasy adventures.
I recommend this volume to fans of medieval fantasy and of alternate histories, but if you're not into fantasy, I doubt this story would appeal much.
An Exquisite Fantasy!.......2003-02-26
I love this trilogy. I read it close to 10 years ago. I have just finished it the second time. I am just as enthralled as ever with this historical fantasy filled with enchantments and interlaced with tender romantic moments. I will always love Alfred, the innocent and beautiful elf monk, turned powerful elf lord after much struggles with his real true self. I will always appreciate Thea who loves him from the very beginning. Finally who could ever forget Alfred's encounter with Richard, the Lion Heart, Alfred's sorrows during the disastrous invasion of Constantinople and finally Alfred's torment in the last of the trilogy when he thought he has lost all those he loves. My only complaint is the seemingly rush writing towards the end. On the other end, it maybe I did not wish the tale of Alfred, Thea, their children and their elf kin to end. The Hound and the Falcon is definitely one of my favorites to be treasured always.

The monk Alfred has lived his entire life hidden away in the st.Ruans abbey. But even though the years go by brother Alf still looks no older than a boy. Wise though he may be, Alf is unable to face the truth about himself. He is one of the fair folk, an elf, kin to the elven-king. But when trouble comes to st. Ruans, elf-blood can be hidden no more. . .
The great thing about these books is the easy flow of the story. You open them, and before you know it youre battling alongside King Arthur, running through the burning streets of Constantinople or fleeing the Hounds of God. And all the time there are the marvelous details, the dialog, the people. These characters are so easy to fall in love with. Alfred is so scared, so confused you just wish you could reach out a hand and tell him everything will be alright. Beacuse you feel so close to these people, al the way through the books.
These are definately worth the read.
Moving story of self acceptance & a grand adventure in one!.......2002-10-14
I first read this collection of three of Judith Tarr's best books back in the late 1980's. They are a little melodramatic at times, but I really enjoyed them.
The main characters are all incredibly well drawn, especially Alfred, the pious monk turned into a reluctant elven warrior & mage. He wrestles with his own self doubt and the state of his soul throughout the books, even as he changes lives for the better all around him. Sometimes, like his female foil, Thea, you just want to shake him and wake him up to the fact that someone soulless would never do so much good in the world--no matter what the church believes!
Alfred is a foundling who is raised by monks, and becomes a very learned and pious monk himself. His writings are praised by the Pope himself. Alfred eventually realizes that he is not aging and is, in fact, an immortal elf. If he believes his church teachings, then he is a soulless being. He grapples with this throughout the book. He has an encounter with others of his kind, nursing a prince of his kind back to health and meeting a fiery tempered elf woman, Thea. He is mortified that he is attracted to her--he had thought the vow of chastity to be the easiest of his vows, because he was never drawn to mortal women. He turns down the position as abbot, believing himself to be unworthy. (Those who raised him and grew up with him accept and love him as he is without a qualm--they know in their hearts that he is a power for good.) He then sets off to figure his life out. He is swept into the train of Richard the Lion-hearted later into the Crusades and to Rome. He is nearly burned by the church, becomes a great warrior, discovers his magical abilities, and finally learns to accept himself and the love of the elf woman who has been following him since their first encounter back at the abbey.
Don't miss this chance to read this book in this bargain omnibus form. You won't regret it!

this is one of the best series of books Ive read in a long time. the events happen at a pace that makes it hard to put down. I'm a commercial fisherman,Iread alot on my down time they are enchanting enough to take me away to a different world even 125 miles out in the ocean. I highly reccomend this series to all sci-fi readers. My one and only regret is that Mr.jordan cannot produce them fast enough.then again if he did they would not be as engrosing. My eyes and mind await the tenth installment of the series "the wheel of time"

Having already read these four books and enjoyed them all, the tapes were also very good. The books were fantastic but, i could not read while i drove or did certain other tasks that required my eyes and hands now that is taken care of. I can now do just about anything and enjoy these great books. So, i do recommend reading the books but, if your a person on the go then this collection on tape is a fantastic substitute.

The recipes are OK, I purchased it from Amazon because Crate and Barrel had it at one time so I thought it would be a good book since I have enjoyed Crate's books in the past. However, this one was a lot smaller than expected and the recipes were just OK. I always say if you can get one or two good recipes then you should get the book because a good recipe is hard to come by, which you can with this book. So if you are looking for just that then this book will be a perfect buy.
Not to the traditional English taste.......2006-02-23
We bought this after purchasing a George Foreman electric grill. The recipe book with the Grill does not provide much in the way of basic methods and recipes, and we were looking for something more expansive and fundamental. It did not mention bacon for instance. The Ridgaway book however is very American and does not consider a more traditional English taste. We have found it therefore rather unhelpful and probably a waste of money. We are both pensioners. Is there anything for pensioners of Old England?

This is the essential book to have. I have made almost every recipe and they all turned out soooo good. Make sure you get a very good quality grill pan like All-Clad. Even the friends I have who did not cook before now can because of this book. One pan cooking was never better!
You know what I like in a cookbook? RECIPES........2006-02-01
This cookbook was something of a waste--glad I got it used. The used copy I got still had the Pottery Barn sticker on the back, which comes as no surprise--I don't think that the author of this book intended to have it actually serve as a guide to cooking with a grill pan. Rather, it's a glossy throwaway publication that would look great tucked in to a gift box along with a new grill pan.
This book is full of photos...and big chapter headers...and white space...but very few actual recipes. Also, there's nothing really "grill pan specific" about them; it's really more of a "barbeque substitute" sort of thing. Nor is it a guide to one-pot cooking with a grill pan, which is sort of what I was hoping for. I really don't see myself making much of what's listed in this cookbook; if I wanted to get a million other pots and pans dirty I wouldn't bother hauling out the grill pan.

This is a great cookbook because of it's variety and simplicity. It has a wide range of receipes (appetizers and main dishes; seafood, vegetables, and meats) that are not overwhelmingly complex. Most require readily available ingredients. It's not overly basic, but simple enough to use everyday; unlike some cookbooks that are targeted to someone who can afford to be in the kitchen all day.

I met Jamee Ruth at a book signing in New York and she is amazing!! I bought both of her books, this one and MIX IT UP!, and have just ordered more for gifts. She is not only an incredible writer she is absolutely gorgeous! What an inspiration to see a chef and author that looks like a model straight out of Vogue. And so friendly you want to go to her house for dinner. Jamee said she is almost finished with another book-I can't wait!!! Her writing is so easy to follow, she really is an expert teacher. If you ever hear that she is doing a book signing go and see her-I wish she had her own show so I could see her and learn from her everyday!

A nice little cookbook!.......2003-05-29
When I purchased this book on impulse at a remainders store, I didn't realize how nice it really was. The cheerful yellow pages are inviting and the foods are nicely photographed, though not every recipe has a photo.
I bought a universal grill that had absolutely no information on how to use it except for making panini, and this book told me everything I needed to know to do basic grilling and then some.
The book is divided into chapters on grilling various foods (poultry, beef, seafood, vegetables and vegetarian entrees, etc.) plus a chapter on sauces, rubs and marinades, and another on side dishes and accompaniments. And there's even one on desserts, which I wouldn't have thought of finding in a grilling book. The butter-rum grilled bananas sound pretty good!
Useful for those who have either grill pans or electric two-sided grills, the book explains how to use both with each recipe. Unfortunately, this book appears to be close to being out of print.
Terrific Book.......2002-02-13
Great cookbook with some creative and unusual recipes. The Pork Loin with Cider-Molasses Sauce was a big hit with the family. We'll be referring to this one regularly as we break in our George Foreman Grill. Only wish there was more nutritional information included BUT it isn't intended to be a low fat or low calorie cookbook. Most recipes aren't heavy though and those that are appear to look as if they can easily trimmed down a bit.

Lots of good pictures make it difficult to decide which garment to start on first. Something for a variety of fashion tastes. If all the yarns aren't available in your area, it's a little difficult to figure out a good substitute on some patterns. Instructions seem clear.
Crochet for the 21st century--finally!!!.......2006-09-30
I LOVED THIS BOOK!
It was great to see crochet enter the 21st century! This is a collection of really fun garments that belie the conception thatcrochet has to be stodgy and old fashioned. Sassy little tops, very wearable shawls, a gorgeous wedding tunic - many designs I want to make. Crochet garments don't have to be clunky, and this is the theme of this book. I love the youtthful look of many of the projects. Garments are from several of the top designers: Doris Chan, Nancy Nehring, Tammy Hildebrand, Margaret Hubert --and thank goodness, there are not any granny squares or ripple designs here! My favorite is a spectacular necklace crocheted with thin copper wire with beads added.
Disappointing!.......2006-09-17
I received this book today, which i was excited upon until I opened the cover and started reading. Almost all of the patterns are a form fitting halter top and small skirt, alot of belly showing. I dont mind showing a little skin but every other page was like that! The patters were starting to look alke. Alot of them using Lionbard Glitterspun or something just like it. The was a Berrocco suede 2 piece halter a skirt i like until i saw the back, which would make you look like some street tart!! A red duster with multicolour feathers coming down the sides which was so ghastly not even your old schooled grandmother would attempt! with the model doing her best to make the ghastly thing look good, most of pattern have some type of open work, a ridiculous bolero, a cheap looking sml tote bag, plastic beaded necklace and bracelet.The only nice thing is the body suit on the cover and who is going to wear that every where they go! NO, nice sweaters or cardigan, stiff yarn, and the worse possible colour combos! The stitches are easy, mostly for beginner, possibly intermediate, intermdiate-advance my cry at the boredom. The terrible fact about Francis Ford Coppola's career is that it will always be divided evenly in half, down a line called Apocalypse Now. Before that film is prodigious promise--an Academy Award for writing Patton, two uncannily fine Godfather movies, and the Antonioni-esque smallness of The Conversation. After, there is telescoping debt, talk of reinventing the studios, and multiple, hollow exercises in style. If that's a tough assessment, it's one borne out by this thick, fair biography. The author, Michael Schumacher, who has previously published books on Allen Ginsberg and Eric Clapton, makes much of Coppola's boyhood spell of polio, from which he emerged miraculously healthy and movie-mad. He orchestrated his life thereafter with a consequent mania, as though making up for lost time. While still in film school, he sold screenplays and made Z-budget drive-in movies for Roger Corman. In two years, he wrote 12 scripts for 7 Arts, and in the mid-1960s started a family, made You're a Big Boy Now and Finian's Rainbow, pushed George Lucas to write THX1138, founded American Zoetrope, and took a job, purely for the money, directing The Godfather. The chapters on Apocalypse Now are the book's highlights, and without saying as much they explain the spent quality at the core of Coppola's films in the next two decades. Francis Ford Coppola was born in a great year for the movies!
In 1939 the director was born to Carmen Coppola and his wife
Italia. His parents were creative-Carmen was a musician in the
Detroit Symphony and later in the New York Philharmonic under the baton of Arturo Toscanini. Carmen would later win a musical
Oscar for the Godfather films.
Francis was a younger son to his older brother who was everything Francis wasn't: handsome and well liked at school.
His sister Talia Shire would later be a movie star in his own
films most notably the Godfather classics.
Coppola graduated from Hofstra and received a master's degree
in film from the UCLA film school. His early apprenticship in
film was under the tutelage of famed B director Roger Corman.
Coppolla emerged from nudie films and small pictures to direct
"Finigan's Rainbow" and began to emerge as a talented maverick
whose creative/artistic wings were flying in the early 1970s.
Despite arduous business and creative troubles he won fame and fortune and several Oscars for the Godfather films. His most
controversial film was "Apocalypse Now" his take on the Vietnam
conflict based on Joseph Conrad's novella "The Heart of Darkness."
Coppola's career has more ups and downs than a roller coaster
as he founded Zoetrope Films in San Francisco and went to the
mat in countless donybrook battles with studio executives.
Coppola reminds me of Orson Welles in that he achieved fame early and then had a difficult career in tinsel town. He is a
man of massive ego; intelligence; daring and creative attention
to the details/minutia of film. He was unfaithful to his wife
Ellie; grieved over a son yet emerges from this biography as a
flawed but good man. He is gregarious and honest and a good
friend. His friendship assisted George Lucas in launching his
storied career! I like Coppola's rich textured films. His screenwriting from Patton to his latest project is outstanding.
This meticulous account of Coppola's career in the Hollywood jungle will not appeal to everyone. Countless pages are devoted to business deals, legal disputes and the difficulties encountered by Coppola in making his films.
For me who loves the Godfather and FFC this is a fine book.
Anyone who seeks to explore this brilliant man's career would do
well to begin with Schumacher's fine biograpy.
Apocalypse When.......2000-04-08
I thought this biography was detailed mostly around this film. On page 262, first paragraph, I think Mr. Coppola would agree to mention the fact that "The Chief Phillips" made a life last attempt to end Willard after getting speared on the boat by Kurtz's mongrules. Overall, the book was a manificant biography of a Itailian-American film maker of our time.
A TOTAL mystery..........2000-02-05
...and I hope he stays that way. Francis Ford Coppola is one of the inspirations of my life. His energy and enthusiasm for what he does outshines even the projects many might deride. One thing you have to say is at LEAST he puts his all into what he does, and I'd imagine no one would doubt this. PS: WHEN is the UNCUT version of "One From the Heart" going to be issued on DVD?

I work for Francis Coppola today and know him pretty well. Michael Schumacher's book really captures the spirit and energy of this facinating and complex man. I have read most of the other Coppola books and none combines an understanding for both the human and artistic side of Francis.
This book, like no other I have read, reflects the passion, energy and chaos of the Coppola world. I can tell you from the inside there is no more exciting experience than being part of the Coppola energy. Francis loves to tackle the "impossible" and never gives up. I particularly like this book because it is clear that the author, like myself, has great respect for this whirlwind of a man.
