Book Description
Upton Sinclair is best known for writing The Jungle -- a novel that exposes the practices of the meat packing industry that lead to governmental investigations and changed food laws in America.
King Coal is based on the 1914 and 1915 coal strikes and follows Hal Warner, a rich man who wanted a look into commoners' lives. What he found there was abhorrent -- thus begins the tale of unionization and the advocacy workers' rights. Unionization, however, is easier spoken of than it is accomplished. It was a dangerous task -- for the leaders of the coal mines were hardened men, men who would not stop at petty threats and minor violence.

Hal stood looking at the cheering crowd. He had time to note some of the faces upturned to him. Pitiful, toil-worn faces they were, each making its separate appeal, telling its individual story of deprivation and defeat. Once more they were transfigured, shining with that wonderful new light which he had seen for the first time the previous evening. It had been crushed for a moment, but it flamed up again; it would never die in the hearts of men--once they had learned the power it gave. Nothing Hal had yet seen moved him so much as this new birth of enthusiasm. A beautiful, a terrible thing it was!

Reminiscent of a teen hero pulp novel.......2003-05-02
This is not a great book. The story is simple, the characters are clichéd, and the message hits the reader with the subtlety of a caveman's club. It is reminiscent of a teen hero pulp novel; a socialist "Red Planet" perhaps. Based on that assessment this book probably deserves two stars. On the other hand, Sinclair did do an effective job of researching and documenting the labor injustices of that era. Also, his writing style is remains remarkably fluid, even if it is not a showcase for the beauty of the English language. I enjoyed this book and learned something from it, even if it is not Sinclair's highest art.

Book Description
The mining of coal created jobs, built towns, and powered the ships, trains, and factories, which leapfrogged the United States into one of the world's most powerful nations. But it also snuffed out the lives of too many men and boys and left too many widows struggling to keep the rest of their families intact.
In The Coal King's Slaves, a father and his three sons face blackness, filth, hardships, and extreme danger in the anthracite coal mines of eastern Pennsylvania while the woman of their home struggles to keep her family alive. The Coal King's Slaves, a historical novel set in the late 1800s, looks back on family life, living conditions, social barriers, industrial greed, violent confrontations, and death and destruction in the coal pits.
Some saw "King Coal" as the answer to a fairly steady income. Some felt it was the mysterious force that attracted men to a dangerous occupation and a proud brotherhood of workers. And some assigned the title, with disgust, to mine owners and managers who had more concern for the well-being of mine mules than they did for human workers. The 19th century was a particularly cruel time for mining families, and the treatment they received from many owners and managers led to deadly confrontations and finally to the formation of miners' unions.
Not all bosses were cruel people, but many did lack compassion for the needs of employees, their families, their health problems, their living conditions, and their lives in general. For too many miners it was a form of slavery from which escape was difficult.

A Vivid Portrayal of Coal Mining Life.......2002-12-24
This is a griping historic novel. It brings forth emotions while being grounded in hard facts. Readers walk away with expanded knowledge of the events and issues facing miners of past years while reading expertly constructed storylines.
This book brings vivid images of life as a Scranton coal miner a century ago. The insensitivity of mine bosses is shown, as they were upset at mining accidents not for the sake of those injured yet because of production delays. Further lack of feeling is shown when mine owners would pay for the removal of dead mules in mines, yet families would have to pay to bring the bodies of their dead relatives from mines.
We learn a main reason why mine owners were insentivies was that it was railroad companies that owned most of the mines. Laws passed allowed rail companies to control the transportaiton of coal. Railrod companies gobbled up owning coal mines and refused to transport coal of competitors. The owners of railroads were generally not sympathetic to the plight of miners.
Miners suffered and they reacted. 61,000 miners died nationwide at work from 1838 through 1914. Growing labor unreast was met with company-sponsored attackers that put down unrest and killed some miners. Mine union members were barred from employment. Vigilantes struck back. Mine executives and public officials were killed. Miners marched, and Sheriffs and deputized Sheriffs opened fire shooting and killing miners.
Scranton a century ago was a city with much tension, struggles, and death. This novel brings that Scranton of yesteryear alive. This book about working underground is a rare gem.
The Coal King's Slaves.......2002-11-19
Wow, I loved it. What a story. My grandfathers worked in mines. It gave me a great insight to their struggles. The stories they told me in my child hood were explained in detail. I am not much of a book reader, but I could not put this book down. Gripping. All persons who work for a living should read this book. See what these people did to pave the way for all of us. Be thankful and don't let their stuggles go for not in this era of corperate greed. A must read for all union members.

More than a great conclusion, great writing. Period........2000-05-08
With this, the last of the Finders Stone Trilogy I can say that I am actually sad to see it end. This is something that all to often eludes me with Fantasy trilogies. Here we have great characters, a great plot line and great pacing. With the 3rd book we find that Finder, unlike the impression that we are given at the end of the first book, is not really repentant for what he has done, and sees Alias as his greatest creation even though he calls her his "daughter". It takes a small halfling and some friends to show him the destruction his vanity almost causes again. And while I am glad to see that our favorite characters from the first book are back, I am also glad to see that the focus of this book is on the redemption of Finder and the troubles he goes through to get to that point. I was also pleased to see that Dragonbait was more fully developed and the great character that he turned out to be. Too often in the fantasy genre we see Paladins as strict, unbending followers of the codes of their God's, often to detriment of everyone around them in their arrogance. Here we are given a being totally devout in his faith and yet went through some amazing trials to have that faith tempered by wisdom, and yet still has a sense of humor and common sense. I think here we see what Paladins were meant to be, and not the easy literary fundamentalists they have become. Kudos all the way around. A very easy recommendation to anyone looking for a good book.
...and now the conclusion........2000-02-22
In "Azure Bonds", we met Alias the sell sword, and her "soul brother" Dragonbait. It also introduced the Nameless Bard and the only known halfling bard, the irrepressible Olive Ruskettle. In "The Wyvern's Spur", Olive helps us to learn Nameless is not nameless after all. So, what adventures call for our intrepid heroes? Only the return of the Darkbringer himself: Moander.
Akabar bel Akesh, a mage of no small water, returns from his Turmish homeland to aid Alias and Dragonbait. To make matters worse, Moander has improved his minions since last he set foot on Faerûn. The Mouth of Moander, and its people, enslaved by the dark deity, once again seeks to control Alias, and bend her to its will.
In this, the third and final book in the Finder's Stone trilogy, we are given a deeper understanding of Nameless, and of those who love him, despite their better judgment. Will the Harpers rescind the ban on Nameless from the Realms, will they return to him his name, and will Moander succeed in controlling Alias? Read the book.
If you decide to pick this one up, and wonder what the future holds for Alias the sell sword, or the Nameless bard pick up the following titles as well: "Masquerades" and "Finder's Bane" both by Kate Novak and Jeff Grubb.
My Favorite Book!.......2000-01-27
This book has got to be my favorite out of all of the D&D books that I have read! I thoroughly enjoyed the story and loved the ending. I wish there was a fourth to the Finder's Stone Trilogy! (but I guess it wouldn't be a Trilogy then huh?)
a good book-definately different.......1999-01-13
What I enjoyed most about this book is that the main character(the nameless bard) was actually prone to true feelings ie; being tempted ,and ofttimes selfish. But truly not a bad guy! Very good in it had much different "evil"than most TSR books
An astounding conclusion to a fantasic series.......1998-11-30
Song of the Saurials was in a word fantastic! It neatly rounded off the Finder's Stone trilogy. While still providing you with a great deal of high fantasy adventure.
Each of the characters were so real and so well definded that you could almost believe they were real people. As with the other two book in this series I was sad to see it end.

Customer Reviews:
Good, but also repetitive.......2005-06-07
The McCade books are very good, among my all-time faves, but they're getting a bit repetitive. At least this time around there aren't any assasins, but in Alien Bounty McCade manages to wind up in chains not once but TWICE, and once again manages to get rescued by his buds, Rico, eversoheavily armed, and Phil, once a slave himself. In the next novel, McCade's Bounty, our galactic space hero's daughter is enslaved by the space pirates. I swear, I would be suprised if in McCade's world anyone lower in status than Lakorian royalty was NOT a slave at some point, considering the stats. Also, the part in Alien Bounty about Mustapha Pong is a bit short. Other than those two points, though, MCCADE ON THE RUN excels. It weaves an intricate, complex universe in its diverse worlds, some of which entirely artificial. Dont expect any of that "Oh, it's a lava world" nonsense.
This book deserves 4.5 stars, but hey, I'm a pessimist.
GREAT ADVENTURE BOOK... .......2005-01-30
Ok, I loved the book and so will you if you enjoy shooting, suspense and good characters. Sometimes the resolution of the suspense is a little too easy, but other times it is very exciting and rewarding. I have not read the previous book in the series, but have read other books by Dietz over the years and enjoyed them.
I have since purchased another book by him and hope that it is as good as this one.

Many attempts to debunk Heeren..........2006-10-11
I read this book shortly after its revision came out around 2000, and found it extremely well-argued. Given that, I'm amazed at how vehemently evolutionists attempt to debunk Heeren's points (and even his style of writing).
I'm lead to wonder just how "established" evolution can be when Fred Heeren's book "Show Me God" has a forward written by the person who just won the Nobel Prize for Physics, George Smoot?
Evolutionists can claim that evangelicals are "crazy" or "ignorant", but how can they claim that about the man who won the 2006 Nobel Prize for Physics?
Nothing comes from Nothing.......2006-07-25
Fred Heeran makes science easy to understand, and points out the inconsistencies of scientists who do not believe God created the Universe without a trace of sarcasm. I am in the middle of reading this book, and plan to read all the books in the Wonders that Witness series. His imaginary conversations with Carl - a voice inside his head - brings everything down to earth, and adds a touch of humor. Fred encourages us to ask questions, and not accept answers that don't match up with reason. He says we should not think that the Bilble is true "to us" because we believe it, but that we should believe because it IS true. He challenges the concept of reletive truth, saying that it results in chaos. And he reveals evidence of a loving, intelligent, personal God.
Clear and Exciting .......2006-07-15
I have only praise for this work because of its accessability. It is clearly written and packed with exciting 'new' discoveries about the nature of the universe from the astronomer's lens. I give it four stars for clarity as an introduction and of its power to stimulate interest in other fields.
On a completely different level, this book is useless to prove the existence of God, to disprove the eternity of the world, etc. As Hume has conclusively shown, the cosmological argument is a fallacious argument. You can't posit some quality of the unseen and unobserved (God) based on what's seen and observed. If that were so, we may posit that God is evil based on observation of genocide and good based on our observation of goodness. There has to be uniformity in the argument; for if someone is willing to use the good in the world and credit a deity for that act, so then also the same principle ought to hold that same god as the cause of horrible acts. Thomas Aquinas tried to use this type of cosmological argument for God's existence but he noted that God exists in a different way than everything else exists. But you cannot logically have a proposition in the conclusion that is not to be found in the premise. For example, a logician cannot begin with a look at the earth and deduce that something altogether different from matter created the rolling hills in his gaze. No, it is not observation that leads to God, but a different premise altogether. For if it was on the basis of the observed that we are conducted to God, he would be whatever is logically given in the premise. But there is nothing given--and there is especially no ONE given in the premise (there is no personality in what we observe). We see only matter--we KNOW persons.
Fred Heeren is therefore an inconsistent empiricist or an inconsistent theist. Remember lastly that even if the cosmological argument was formally valid, it would never lead us to believe in the TRIUNE GOD as Karl Barth forcibly mentions.
If there is a 'message from space' it tells us nothing about God. The conclusion is completely subjective. One can look to Michael Polanyi to understand the objectivity fallacy.
Bashing a square peg into a round hole.......2006-04-24
Full-on christians won't (want to) understand what I'm talking about, so go ahead and give me that "not helpful" vote you will be dying to give me after reading what follows. Likewise, the apathetic, if they could be bothered. (By the way, I am not an atheist. However, I was at one time a christian.) For critical thinkers, and others looking to challenge their worldview, I shall continue.
"Show Me god" is a religious book masquerading as a science text. Scientific facts are falsifiable, religious dogma is not. That is, Science deals with the observable, measurable, and tangible - and will admit when it is in error. Religious dogmas are not prone to admit errors; they are about faith in things that may or may not exist, and, may or may not have happened. Religions attempt to give their adherants watertight comfort in the knowledge that their religious denomination is the truest one. Science admits it doesn't have all the answers.
This book tries to confirm and marry christianity (why not any other religion?) with Science, by using "non-sequiteurs". This is like trying to bash a square peg into a round hole. The title itself "begs the question". "Ad populum" is used, and some quotes are taken out of context. Critical thinkers can sharpen their logic and reasoning abilities by reading this book and scrutinising all the presentations. christians may want to get this book to feel good about themselves and their bogus theory known as "intelligent design". (The christian bible has two different versions of creation BTW. Read genesis chapters 1 & 2. Take notes and compare.) And for others, you may like to look into what "critical thinking" means; my sincerest best wishes to you. Deserves less than 1-star.

Best Little Book on Matchbox.......2006-11-18
It's hard to believe that so much information is packed into such a little book. It's the big little book for Matchbook collectors. The photo quality in this book is second to none. Although the prices of these gems are always in flux, it is great to have an updated price guide. The history, collecting tips and listing of online resources contained in the book are treasures in and of themselves.
Excellent Guide--very handy and helpful.......2006-07-05
Most Matchbox guide books are encyclopedic in size. This is the first one I've found that is easy to take with you to toy shows, garage sales, and flea markets. The photos in the book are outstanding. The helpful collecting tips are well-written and are sound advice for collectors. All in all, I'm very pleased to recommend this book. Mine already has considerable wear, and I'll probably be needing another one by Christmas (hint to family)!
Reasonably priced and useful introductory guide to collecting Matchbox models.......2006-06-15
This book is very welcome as it will increase many people's enjoyment of collecting Matchbox models. Due to its easy availability and reasonable price it may even attract some more people to this wonderful hobby.
With its compact size it is ideally suited for carrying around to toy shows and flea markets, where it can be used as an aid in identifying models one might come across.
While experienced collectors may be slightly disappointed at the lack of detail and some embarrassing and sometimes misleading mistakes (which have no doubt been caused by the tight deadline pressure under which the book was written), this book is perfect as an introduction for beginners.
The quality of the many pictures is first class, and the introductory pages in the front section of the book, including a well-written summary of Matchbox history and useful collecting tips, are a must read for anyone interested in the subject.
Congratulations to Tom Larson on this fine achievement!

Incredible and Inspirational.......1999-11-02
After reading through this book, I look at the world in a whole new way. Everything is a possible quilt design, now! Diana is an inspiration to beginners like myself - her exercises and techniques are REAL. I use them daily!
WOW! What a great book of design ideas........1998-03-07
This book is filled with fantastic ideas for creating and designing non traditional quilts.
The title doesn't lie - truly an inspiring book!.......1997-06-06
This book is the "must have" for quilters looking to break out of the traditional mold. Many books by artists rely on a knowledge of art that few of us who are not artists have, and show page after page of beautiful creations with only vague references to technique and inspiration. Inspiration Odyssey, on the other hand, tells us not only where to find inspiration, but what to do with it once it's been found! Not just another project book, this book provides insight into the mind of the artist - where she gets her inspirations, how she interprets them, how she documents, evolves, and executes a design, and some of the final products.
This is an artist's book for the non-artist. Finally, a book that gives some direction around the creative process! This is the first quilting book that I have been eager to read cover to cover - in fact, I can't put it down, and keep returning to its pages for new inspirations. A definite 10!
Customer Reviews:
Only if you want a Country and Western Theme Decor.......2006-01-13
This book states there are 100 quick projects, but I would say that 80% of them lean toward a country/western decorating style. If you like the country, folksy, made-it-myself kind of look, this is the book for you. There are a few classy/contemporary projects, but the focus seems to be towards using trellaces, rope, burlap and wood to decorate.
This book shows you how to:
~ apply leather fringe to the arms of a wooden chair (pg 62)
~ reuse items, i.e. making a dustpan into a desktop tidy (pg 66)
~ make a woven window blind out of gauze dressing wrap (pg 240)
~ create lighting by hanging flashlights w/leather straps to a metal rod (pg 226)
Okay, I'll admit, the flashlight thing might be cute in a kid's room.
There are some projects that caught my eye, like the Japanese screen (pg 138), chair drape/covers (pg 38-42) and the wood floors (pg 44-47).
If you like western or country decor, get this book. If not, you probably want to pass or check it out of the library first.
GREAT INSPIRATION FOR DO-IT-YOURSELF DECORATORS.......2000-04-13
Wonderful reference tool for helping us do-it-our-selfers in the quest for easy, yet stylish decorating projects for the home. Having recently moved to a new home and feeling the desire for a change in my decor without spending a bundle, I purchased several decorating idea books for guidance. After going through all the books I must say....."THE NEW HOME DECORATOR" is the absolute best! It is packed full of over 100 uncomplicated projects with beautiful photographs that walk you through each stage as you transform everyday objects and outdated rooms into stunning revitalized treasures. The book is divided into six different chapters according to different rooms of your house. I personally favor the chapter on bedrooms....the "pistachio-shell border" is so easy and fun, but really the whole books is easy and fun. I highly reccomend this book to everyone and now all my friends are heeding my advice and either coming over and burying their nose in it all the time for ideas or begging to borrow it. But it's the only book I own that I'm not willing to lend out.....honestly I cringe at the thought of a friend or neighbor beating me to the punch on an idea or project from the book. Even if readers aren't interested in the actual projects themselves, the photos are so inspiring and innovative that their own creative genius will begin flowing and any decorating dilemnas or stalemates on ideas they were faced with will be passe. I don't think it has seen a bookshelf yet! 5 STARS for decorating enthusiasts!

Book Description
Josh Kirby's exuberant cover paintings for Jerry Pratchett's bestselling Discworld series have spawned dozens of imitators, but no one has yet matched his irrepressible and chaotic humor. As this definitive collection of Kirby's art--including many formerly unpublished works--proves, his vision has many facets. They go from the wildest fantasies to the hardest sci-fi; some images evoke a macabre realm of horror, others portray chilling futuristic landscapes, but all are wondrous. An analysis of Kirby's career and techniques will increase your appreciation of each picture: the Discworld delights, bursting with detail and action; the ghoulish depictions of things that go bump in the night; and the representations of the science fiction worlds inspired by Ray Bradbury and Robert Silverberg. Plus: enjoy a comic compendium of interpretations from the pens of authors such as Tom Holt. A visual feast not to be missed, with an informative text by multiple Hugo Award-winner David Langford. 112 pages (all in color), 8 1/4 x 11 3/4.

A cropped cornucopia.......2000-04-11
After the marvellous "Garden of Unearthly Delights" and "Discworld Portfolio" I was eagerly awaiting this new Kirby artbook.
I was badly disappointed.
The images selection is good, but the way they are reproduced is frustrating : the images are too small. How can you admire Kirby's masterfully detailled paintings when they are only half a page or even one-fourth a page in size?
Only buy this one if you desperately need anything sporting the name "Josh Kirby". Otherwise, better put your hands on "In the garden of unearthly delights". I hope Paper Tiger will start publishing better books. Their latest ones where quite disappointing, and this one hit the bottom of the pit.
Fantasy Window.......2000-04-11
I think the Discworld would not be the same without Josh Kirby. If you want inspiration for writing a story, buy this book. Josh is absolutely incredible, and his eye for detail always makes me feel part of a secret. Study each picture, or else you miss the point.
Book Description
Why and how does the appeal of certain male Hollywood stars cross over from straight to gay audiences? Do stars lose their cachet with straight audiences when they cross over? In Gay Fandom and Crossover Stardom Michael DeAngelis responds to these questions with a provocative analysis of three famous actorsâJames Dean, Mel Gibson, and Keanu Reeves. In the process, he traces a fifty-year history of audience reception that moves gay male fandom far beyond the realm of âcampâ to places where culturally unauthorized fantasies are nurtured, developed, and shared.
DeAngelis examines a variety of cultural documents, including studio publicity and promotional campaigns, star biographies, scandal magazines, and film reviews, as well as gay political and fan literature that ranges from the closeted pages of One and Mattachine Review in the 1950s to the very âoutâ dish columns, listserv postings, and on-line star fantasy narratives of the past decade. At the heart of this close historical study are treatments of particular film narratives, including East of Eden, Rebel Without a Cause, The Road Warrior, Lethal Weapon, My Own Private Idaho, and Speed. Using theories of fantasy and melodrama, Gay Fandom and Crossover Stardom demonstrates how studios, agents, and even stars themselves often actively facilitate an audience’s strategic blurring of the already tenuous distinction between the heterosexual mainstream and the gay margins of American popular culture.
In addition to fans of James Dean, Mel Gibson, and Keanu Reeves, those interested in film history, cultural studies, popular culture, queer theory, gender studies, sociology, psychoanalytic theory, melodrama, fantasy, and fandom will enjoy this book.

Mystery Jim.......2005-06-23
I was a kid about 10 years old when Jim Reeves died. Even then I loved Jims music and have always been more than a little curious about finding out more about his life, but knowledge of Jim seems to be more elusive today than ever, this book notwithstanding. I find it really incredible that no one bothered to write a biography about someone as well known and loved as Jim until almost 35 years after his death. It's almost like, what's the point now?...Even more strange, I remember in the 70's and 80's when a string of movies about entertainers were being made - Buddy Holly, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Richie Valens, I kept thinking anytime now we'll finally get to see a long-awaited movie about Jim........Jim's popularity and career easily eclipsed all, or near all, of them and yet, as of 2005, hollywood has remained stone silent on Jim to this day. Go to www.Biography.com where TV-biographys are made for the History channel and A & E. You'll find all you want to know about Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Buddy Holly, and many many lesser knowns and complete unknowns but you won't find Jim Reeves. For the life of me I don't understand it. It's as if there has been a coordinated effort to erase Jim from history ! Could Jim have had THAT many enemies or have I simply overestimated his vocal quality and popularity all these years ? Hasn't he been in the Country Music Hall of Fame for over 30 years ?
About this book - I am not criticizing it in any way - I haven't read it yet, hence the average 3 stars. I do complement it just for having been written, albeit 3 decades late.
About Eddy Arnold.......2003-04-20
A Book about Jim Reeves would have been nice, since that is what the cover implied.
A book about the real Jim Reeves, Good and Bad.......2002-06-24
I was reluctant to write a review about this book because there were so many comments by Jim Reeves fans that depicted this book as a horrible distortion of the real Jim Reeves.
Well, I have read many articles about Jim Reeves and I have come to the same conclusion that the author, Michael Streissguth, concludes in this book.
Jim was a very talented singer, performer, business man, and yet like so many other celebrities, he had his other side of life.
Jim, at times, could be arrogant, obnoxious, mean and downright vulgar when dealing with other people.
There is no bigger fan of Jim Reeves than I, but this book did not make me hate him or even diminision my love for the man and his music.
The author did an excellent job of describing how talented, loved and respected Jim was and yet at the same time he pointed out his weakness in dealing with his peers.
This is an excellent book for fans of Jim and no one will appreciate him less because the author told the entire story of this wonderful singer and performer.

Good research and writing about a great singer.......2002-06-13
I didn't realize exactly how world-famous Jim Reeves was until I read this book. It's a good depiction of his rise to fame. I don't know enough about his personality to comment on the accuracy of how he's portrayed here. I'm surprised that those close to him refused to comment. Faron Young's family and friends are being quite helpful in my research for his biography, and I'd expect that of anyone who wants an accurate biography. I've always liked the music of Jim Reeves. His enunciation impresses me-- unlike most singers who sound lazy by running words together. Of special note with this book is a 6-song CD as part of the package.
First In-Depth Reeves Biography.......2001-10-06
Considering his prominent status in country music history, it is surprising that this is the first in-depth biography of Jim Reeves. A biography on Reeves seems a natural progression for the author Streissguth, who had previously put out a book on Eddy Arnold Pioneer of the Nashville Sound). Reeves and Arnold were very similar musically: easy listening music marketed to a country audience, with Reeves rising to popularity in the early `50s - about a decade after Arnold. As revealed in this book, however, Reeves certainly did not possess a temperament similar to the easy going Arnold (more on that later).
Our story begins with an overly scholarly analysis of the Reeves ancestry. The author looks at the family tree from their arrival in this country in the 1600s through Jim's birth in 1923 in Texas. The book picks up as we progress through Reeves' destitute youth (the youngest of eight children raised by his siblings and widowed mother in a two-bedroom sharecropper's house) and his six-year career as a minor league ballplayer. Once the author moves into Jim's career as a disc jockey and popular musician, the book becomes enthralling.
Streissguth effectively conveys the contradictions in Reeves, the man. Known as Gentleman Jim for his polite demeanor and smooth voice, Reeves had a hot temper which made him a terror in the recording studios and, occasionally, on stage - when touring conditions were deemed less than acceptable (such as his overbooked tour of Ireland). He was loyal to his friends though and often turned over all of the earnings from a club date to his backup musicians when they were underpaid by the promoter. Reeves also tended towards impatience - a quality which probably contributed to his death in a plane crash at the age of 40 (flying his plane during a horrendous storm when he should have waited for it to pass).
Lurking in the background throughout this story and even more fascinating is Reeves' wife Mary. The reader learns that Jim cheated on Mary throughout their marriage. For whatever reasons, she choose to overlook this indescretion and it never
appeared to affect her devotion to him. Also discussed is Mary's effectiveness as Jim's manager, particularly after his death. She was instrumental in the regular reissues of Reeves' recordings (usually demo vocals overdubbed with new instrumentation) which charted prominently for over ten years after his death - a posthumous career unparalleled in music history even by Elvis Presley.
The inside back jacket of the book includes a 6-song CD of some of Reeves' biggest hits like "Four Walls" and "He'll Have To Go." This bonus provides a good tease that will leave you wanting to obtain a more thorough collection of Reeves' music.
The book itself, however, is the only Jim Reeves biography you'll ever need to read. It's an eventually compelling look at a complex individual.

The Remarkable Michael Reeves: His Short and Tragic Life
ASIN: 0719063515 |
Book Description
Michael Reeves died at age 25 in 1969, between the end of Swinging London and the collapse of the British film industry--an apt candidate to represent all that could have been. This critical biography claims Reeves as the great, lost auteur of British cinema and traces his conception of film back to his childhood and formative experiences. Benjamin Halligan examines Reeves' films in the context of the times, citing The Sorcerers and Witchfinder General as foreshadowing and critiquing the psychedelic and revolutionary zeitgeist. Reeves's earlier work on the fringes of the freewheeling European exploitation cinema is also covered, with particularly emphasis on his Revenge of the Blood Beast.
Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Study of A Cinematic Tragedy.......2007-02-14
Benjamin Halligan's MICHAEL REEVES is the definitive study of the talented but tragic young director whose death at the age of 25 robbed the horror genre--and, Halligan argues rightly--the motion picture at large of one of its most promising architects. Reeves completed only three features, but all of them star horror icons--Barbara Steele, Boris Karloff, and Vincent Price--and all of them are interesting in their own way. Only WITCHFINDER GENERAL (aka THE CONQUEROR WORM) enjoys the cult following it deserves; then again, it is the most accomplished of Reeves' films and the primary harbinger of what might have followed. Halligan's study balances critical and biographical details, incorporates substantial first-hand sources, and includes plenty of illustrations. Even if you have never heard of Mike Reeves, you owe it to yourself to learn more about him--I cannot doubt that a biopic of Reeves is destined in the next few years--and his short but fascinating career.

Book Description
A Companion to Shakespeare and Performance provides a state-of-the-art engagement with the rapidly developing field of Shakespeare performance studies. Essays by major scholars, teachers, and professional theatre makers consider the many sites at which Shakespearean drama is performed: in print, in the classroom, in the theatre, in film, on television and video, in multimedia and digital forms, and as part of a globalized and intercultural performance economy. This companion stands at the cutting edge of the field: several essays introduce current terms and contemporary areas of enquiry in Shakespeare and performance; while others raise questions about the dynamic interplay between Shakespearean writing and the practices of contemporary performance and performance studies. Taken as a whole, the volume productively redraws the boundaries of Shakespeare performance studies.
Book Description
Mike Reeves, a public schoolboy in the late 1950s, gets permission from his Housemaster to visit the local cinema every Saturday. There he worships Hollywood movies, especially those made by Don Siegel and Roger Corman, who become his idols. He dreams of emulating them. Ten years later, having directed only three films for a total budget less than £200,000, Mike Reeves is dead.
A couple of years later, Roger Corman comes to England to make a film. Actor Nicky Henson, who worked with Mike Reeves, is invited to an interview for a part in the film. As he walks into the room, Roger Corman says, "Tell me about Michael Reeves!"
Another couple of years pass. Don Siegel comes to England to make a film. Again Nicky Henson is invited to an interview for a part in the film. As he walks into the room, Don Siegel says, "Tell me about Michael Reeves!"
Author John B. Murray does indeed tell film fans about The Remarkable Michael Reeves and His Short and Tragic Life in this intriguing biography of the talented but fragile filmmaker, whose death at an early age assured him eternal cult status among horror film fans.

Moving story.......2004-10-02
A friend gave me a copy of this book and suggested I read it. I had not heard of Michael Reeves before. It is one of the saddest, most moving books I have ever read. The waste of this fragile, brilliant young man is an incredibly moving story, beautifully told.
