Stan Gillman-Reinhart is a graduate student at a small university in Bellingham, Washington in 1993. Through his experiences and frustrations we meet Delany Richardson, a budding writer and old friend of Stans; John Snyder, a local musician; Brian Fetzler, Stans stoner roommate; Dave Greibing, a mountain climber and Delanys ex-boyfriend; and Bridgette Jonsen, a former heroin addict and Daves current girlfriend. Successive sections of the novel focus on Johns trip through Eastern Europe, Delanys summer in Alaska, Brians life after college, Bridgettes road trip through Utah, Daves ascent of Mt. Denali, and a tragic accident that illuminates their lives. Set in the verdant Pacific Northwest, the sandstone deserts of Utah, the gritty streets of Budapest, and the snow covered wasteland of Mt. Denali, Comfort Food is a literary work with an emphasis on the importance of human relationships and a sense of place. In his inventive new novel Noah Ashenhurst creates a cast of charactersindividualswho are frustrated, isolated, enamored, addicted, connected, and finally redeemed.
Customer Reviews:
Comfort Food - Misnamed but Great Read.......2007-05-09
The only thing I disliked about Noah Ashenhursts's COMFORT FOOD is the title. It should have been given some more Gen-X-ish title that more accurately reflected the novel itself.
Name aside, however, I enjoyed this book. The characters were familiar, and multi-dimensional, and the language was vivid - scenes in the Pacific Northwest were written so well that I could feel misty air on my face.
GOOD READ.......2007-01-05
After letting "Comfort Food" lie on my desk at home for over a year, I finally put down my other readings and picked up this one. I seldom read fiction, but found "Comfort Food" an enjoyable, easy, and entertaining read. It took me only a few sittings to read the book, and the time flew. The characters were intriguing enough to keep my interest page after page, and I found myself wanting to know them more with the turning of each page. Especially for those familiar with the Pacific Northwest, "Comfort Food" is a joy to the soul and a great read.
Discomfort Food.......2006-09-26
I purchased this book this summer on my trip through Boulder. In the Boulder Newspaper I read about a promising new author and his book about the inner struggles of 5 brave characters and how their lives intertwine and interact. The article made it seem like this book was going to be three things: great with character development, great with storytelling, and great with writing about "one's sense of space." This book was terrible. I have been an avid reader my entire life and this is literally one of the worst books I have ever read.
The editing was terrible throughout the length of the book. Grammar mistakes, spelling mistakes, punctuation mistakes - I couldn't believe this book actually went through a proofreading process and was approved and sold for distribution. The mistakes were horrific.
The entire book is supposed to be about character development. Instead the reader starts at a party in college with all 5 characters, and then the reader is told about one significant portion of each of the character's life post-college, then in the final parts of the book the reader is brought through their current places in the world while racing through a final chapter. I think the overall effort of what Noah was trying to portray is a good one, but each section had so little depth it's hard to care too much about any of the characters before you're thrown in to the next ones predicaments. There's very little explanation, the writing talent is very low and almost poor at times, and there are times where political views conflict with the character's voice, or the character's actions don't seem to fit with their earlier character layout in the book. If the character has changed and that's what the author is trying to show, it needed to be a lot more developed. I tried page by page to *get* some sort of underlying theme, I was hoping that one would emerge, but even the final pages confirmed the worst for me. Poor story layout and too many suggested circumstances causing the reader to come to character conclusions which didn't fit the story line.
A recipe for a good read!.......2006-03-01
The characters lives are interlaced like the ingredients in the various mouthwatering dishes that are devoured throughout the novel. A recipe for a good read!
Noah's first novel is a keeper.......2005-12-03
Being a Boomer, I generally don't much relate to stories of Generation X existential angst. However, I found Noah's book delightfully readable and I found I took a genuine interest in his multi-faceted characters quickly. His portraits were compelling, believable, and engaging. I found that in this tale of interwoven lives, I ultimately cared what happened to each one. Well written - - I eagerly await your next effort!

Customer Reviews:
Best comic I've ever read.......2006-06-02
But to be fair - I haven't read many. However, that may just speak volumes for Cable & Deadpool, because even as a non-comic-fan I have been captivated by this series. It manages to integrate the incredulity of Marvel superheroes with the everyday world in a way that is both fun and thought-provoking. Through Deadpool, who is infamous for breaking the fourth wall, the writer takes pot-shots at many different aspects of society and culture - from the Olsen Twins to Fox News. It also raises a number of philosophical questions, such as whether or not human nature can ever be reconciled with the concept of world peace. The writing is brilliant, the artwork is excellent, and both the individual story arcs as well as the general dynamic between these two opposites makes for a fantastic read.
Witty As Ever.......2005-06-11
This book was amazing; an excellent combination of sarcasm, action, suspense, and drama. The storyline can be a bit confusing if you haven't already read the first book, "If Looks Could Kill", so I recommend reading that first. The artwork is superb, bringing the plot and dialogue to life. Deadpool is his usual sarcastic-insane-doesn't-know-when-to-shut-up mercenary self while Cable provides a more serious side to the story. With guest appearances from the X-men and the Silver Surfer, you just have to know that it doesn't get any better than this.

A Nice Reader For Young Children.......2005-12-17
Since "Fantastic Four" is rated PG-13, many younger children will not be able to watch the film. This book, a Festival Reader, conveniently packages the beginning of the film into an easily accessible reader for the younger audience. It introduces the children to Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, and the Thing, which is exactly what the title states.
It does briefly mention Dr. Doom, but his character is left for later volumes in this small series. Everything is nicely packaged so that it doesn't come across too strong for young readers.
Recommended to folks with young children with an interest in the "Fantastic Four." Also, it does encourage youngsters to read in order to learn about their heroes. In case you're wondering, the film received its PG-13 rating for violence and some strong language. In fact, take out some of the cursing, and you've got a really good film that teaches audiences about working together and getting along as a family.

The commentary appears on the same page as the Bible text, which is the Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition. Each volume is self-contained with extensive introductions and notes to Old Testament prophecies. Navarre Bible : Acts of the Apostles.......2000-04-11
Highly recommended for all persons who are reading the Bible for the first time or who are well versed in it. The commentaries make the most difficult passages very understandable.
This could very well be the only study guide that one would need for self-study of certain portions of the Bible. Why not all? Not all of the Bible is available, but the most important books of the New Testament are.

Awesome for better understanding.......2007-01-03
I purchased "The Navarre Bible: Acts of the Apostles" as a companion and reference book for our Catholic Scripture Studies on Acts. It was an amazing tool. Not only did I feel I could truly understand St. Paul's journey, the commentary provided such a wealth of spiritual strenghtening for my soul! It certainly added an extra hour to my weekly study, but, it was well worth it.

Customer Reviews:
Life is but a dream.......2007-05-31
Life for Kiernan was not as picture perfect as she'd made it seem. Born as Norma, Alias as Kate Matthews and as interior designer, Kiernan Malloy. Kiernan trapped her husband Taylor Hudson into marrying her by telling him that she was pregnant. I invision Kiernan to be a little off upstairs if you know what I mean.
Brooke, pschyotherapist to Kiernan was badly beaten by her first husband and ended up falling in love with Taylor Hudson. Careers were soon in jeopardy when Brooke finds out that Kate Matthews,(Kiernan) is the wife of the man she had fallen in love with.
Joie, Brooke's bestfriend, ended up pregnant not knowing whose the baby daddy. It's between Brent and Evan, who are best buddies; but we later learn towards the end of the book that Brent was bent over while Evan was laying pipe to his rear end when Joie walked in on them. How did Joie react to the situation? You'll have to read the book to get all the juicy details. I rated the book 3 stars because it took so long to grab my attention. I nearly put it down twice.
Started off slow, but the middle and ending was GOOD.......2007-03-26
One of my coworkers suggested I read this book because in her words..."This book is GOOD! You won't be able to put it down!" So I took a chance on a new author and I do have to agree with the majority and say it did have a slow start. I thought about returning the book to my coworker twice, but I hung in there and I must say, I was very pleased with the storyline and colorful characters.
The characters were believable and didn't seem made up at all. I was very impressed with this author's knowledge of the Wall Street and high society life. Very impressed! The ending had some good surprises that made the story altogether a good one!
You have to stick it out.......2006-02-04
I did not want the book, but it was sent to me by a book club. When I first started to read the book I was confused. I did not understand who was who or what was what.
Then after the book began to make sense I relized that I could not stop. I shared it with some of my friends and they like it too. You just have to hang on before you can get in to it.
Could have been sooo much better..........2005-10-14
The author had a good story that was poorly executed. The book started off very slow, picked up and got me interested and then feel off. There's lots of drama, and interesting subjects but the ending is too "and they all lived happily ever after" Not one of my favorites; only worth buying if it is on sale.
I didn't like this book.......2005-07-25
This book name dropped too much for me and everything that happened with the Brooke and Taylor happened off scene. Even the first time they made love happened off scene. It would have been nice to spend more time with them when they were actually doing something instead of rehashing what they had already done. The only time the book seemed to come alive was when Kiernan was on the scene. At least I understood her motives and why she was the way she was. Brooke was a sad person in comparison because I never really felt like I knew her. As for the subplot with Brooke's best friend and her boyfriend it was totally unnecessary for this book. If the author had taken the same route with Brooke and Taylor (such as the reader actually seeing their relationship blossom) as she did with the secondary characters this would have been an outstanding book. Good luck to Tracie in the future. You have a lot of potential.

Customer Reviews:
Good Book/Reseller.......2007-06-11
The Book Arrived In Great Condition. I would Buy From This Reseller Again.
Misleading.......2006-06-03
This was not a romance novel by any stretch of the imagination. What we have in this book is a mentor/mentee relationship. John and Melanie were never lovers and I hardly consider their relationship even a friendship. I have a difficult time getting into a romance novel when the love expressed between the two main characters is that of a teacher and student. A complete waste of my time. This book was a complete miss!
"Love Is Color Blind".......2006-01-02
This novel was a great read. I was pulling for Melanie and John big time, but in the end you knew they were'nt going to be together. All in all "Hitts & Mrs. is fab. Lori Bryant-Woolridge, excellent storytelling.
A breezy, thought-provoking read.......2005-10-26
The book raised some thought-provoking points about many issues that are important--especially to African-American women. Topics such as: the importance of career vs. relationships, finding one's identity independent of a man, the definition of a true friend, gaining respect in the workplace, the possibility of a platonic relationship with the opposite sex and of course, interracial dating are all covered in the book. The fact that John and Melanie had a deep, loving, non-sexual relationship helped the highlight the importance of finding the right qualities in the man of your dreams--many which may go beyond race or socio-economic status.
While all of this may sound "heavy" the book moves along smoothly and is a page turner. Great to take on a long weekend away or on a long plane ride! Once you finish, you'll find yourself thinking a lot about what you read.
Good Reading.......2005-10-25
I found Hitts and Mrs., to be a good read. It was a good example of `chick-lit' that didn't make the characters so stereotypical that you were just sick by the time you finished (if you finished). I started reading the book and couldn't put it down until I finished it. The flow was well paced and the main character Melanie Hitts was well developed as well as John.
I found the subplots (which is essential to a good story about contemporary life as most folks have more than one thing going on at a time) to be a great diversion from the storyline when, at times, you just had to step back from John and Melanie so as to be able to really ponder what they were doing-was it right or wrong.
I recommend the read for someone who wants to wrap their minds around something with some texture while traveling etc...
Ms. Woolridge-Bryant did a great job and I look forward to reading more of her offerings.

A home is more than a place to eat, sleep, and do the laundry: it can be a "calm haven in a hectic world," according to author Julia Barnard, "a state of being" that can be tailored to appeal to all five senses. Because we human beings experience the world around us through our senses, New Decorator devotes whole chapters to strategies for using space, light, color, surfaces, air, sound, and home comforts to create a home that's both sensuous and practical:
Remember that light and air are necessary for your well-being, and that a house must breathe to be healthy. Use color to set the tone of a room.... Choose natural and sustainable materials, such as bamboo and jute, and appreciate their surface texture and variation of color. Acknowledge that silence is sometimes golden, and buy appliances that have the quietest sound.
More than 500 color photos of such sensuous rooms show that this novel, commonsense approach to interior decorating can be realized with thoughtful decorating decisions. The beginning decorator will appreciate sections on such basics as combining primary and secondary colors, using light to create atmosphere and mood, and working with patterns. Do-it-yourself projects include a double-sided screen, rolled beeswax and pressed-flower candles, homegrown milk paint, and a leaf-printed wall, all of which give designers the chance to "enter into the give and take of homemaking." --Stefanie Durbin

Not Just for Decorators!.......1999-12-28
I found this book amazing because it helps you to organize ideas for any type of design. It allows you to use different elements like color, space, and light in a way that you can combine them with things that you may already have. After applying some of the ideas in my own home I noticed people would come in and feel different, I felt like I was somewhere else. I recommend this book to anyone who would like to little by little begin to redecorate or likes a change every now and then.
Brilliant evocation of an ideal way to live.......1999-04-24
I just love this book. The evocative messages are an inspiration. Don't just look at the pictures - read this book!
Customer Reviews:
Only if you want a Country and Western Theme Decor.......2006-01-13
This book states there are 100 quick projects, but I would say that 80% of them lean toward a country/western decorating style. If you like the country, folksy, made-it-myself kind of look, this is the book for you. There are a few classy/contemporary projects, but the focus seems to be towards using trellaces, rope, burlap and wood to decorate.
This book shows you how to:
~ apply leather fringe to the arms of a wooden chair (pg 62)
~ reuse items, i.e. making a dustpan into a desktop tidy (pg 66)
~ make a woven window blind out of gauze dressing wrap (pg 240)
~ create lighting by hanging flashlights w/leather straps to a metal rod (pg 226)
Okay, I'll admit, the flashlight thing might be cute in a kid's room.
There are some projects that caught my eye, like the Japanese screen (pg 138), chair drape/covers (pg 38-42) and the wood floors (pg 44-47).
If you like western or country decor, get this book. If not, you probably want to pass or check it out of the library first.
GREAT INSPIRATION FOR DO-IT-YOURSELF DECORATORS.......2000-04-13
Wonderful reference tool for helping us do-it-our-selfers in the quest for easy, yet stylish decorating projects for the home. Having recently moved to a new home and feeling the desire for a change in my decor without spending a bundle, I purchased several decorating idea books for guidance. After going through all the books I must say....."THE NEW HOME DECORATOR" is the absolute best! It is packed full of over 100 uncomplicated projects with beautiful photographs that walk you through each stage as you transform everyday objects and outdated rooms into stunning revitalized treasures. The book is divided into six different chapters according to different rooms of your house. I personally favor the chapter on bedrooms....the "pistachio-shell border" is so easy and fun, but really the whole books is easy and fun. I highly reccomend this book to everyone and now all my friends are heeding my advice and either coming over and burying their nose in it all the time for ideas or begging to borrow it. But it's the only book I own that I'm not willing to lend out.....honestly I cringe at the thought of a friend or neighbor beating me to the punch on an idea or project from the book. Even if readers aren't interested in the actual projects themselves, the photos are so inspiring and innovative that their own creative genius will begin flowing and any decorating dilemnas or stalemates on ideas they were faced with will be passe. I don't think it has seen a bookshelf yet! 5 STARS for decorating enthusiasts!

Halfway Home is Only Half Interesting........2006-06-23
What's in a name? Well, when it comes to this Mary Sheldon novel, obviously she has talent that can only be inherited from her father. She has a lovely and poetic writing style that makes for a nice read, but the story itself is a bit too slow. While the study of glamorous mother "abandoning" her daughter and its longterm effects are an interesting case in study, the novel plods along too slowly to keep the mind from wandering for too long at a time. It's a book, if not on audio tape, you may not even pick up again if you set it down for any length of time.
While I liked the character Alexis and her young protege' Linda's relationship to each other, I found her movie star mother Maggie to be a selfish, pretentious bore, and wonder by the end of the book if Alexis will really gain anything by finally meeting her. The story is too psychologically centered, which makes getting through it somewhat weighty, and a lot of the characters are too cold, distant, and lacking in integrity. That's what makes Alexis and Linda stand out so much. You truly want the best for each of these messed up individuals, and that's what makes what happens to the young girl in the Hell's Kitchen reformatory such a tragedy. Is there a sequel to Halfway Home? Well, all things considered, I'm halfway interested, just to see what comes of the mother-daughter reunion.
Disappointing end...........2003-06-18
The end was very much disappointing. I couldn't believe that such a nice book to read had such an abrupt end, it's a real shame!!
Disappointing end...........2003-06-17
Although I did enjoy reading Halfway Home, I was especially curious on how the 2 women (mother and daughter) would meet after so many years.
That motivated me to keep on reading, the more I read the more curious I was on how the confrontation would be, I was ready for very emotional feelings, ready to cry, wanting so bad for them to meet again and be a part of how that would be. I was also hoping that the grandmother would play a bigger role and would somehow be forced to tell 'the truth' about the missing letters etc.
For those who have read this book, you can imagine my disapointment the way the book ends. For me, totally an abrupt & boring end....
Halfway Home Goes All The Way.......2002-05-16
This is a truly wonderful novel. The story centers around a succesful career woman's struggle to learn about her mother while at the same time working to help a class of at risk teens. The plots are woven flawlessly together like a tapestry excpet these people are three dimensional and they feel very much alive.
A HEARTFELT AND COMPELLING TALE OF TWO WOMEN.......2002-04-23
Critics who call Halfway Home Mary Sheldon's debut novel apparently weren't of reading age when she authored Portrait of Rosemary, Under The Influence, The Shadow Girl, and other novels, going back some twenty-one years. This is not a promising freshman. This is a promise fulfilled. Like her superstar father Sidney, Mary Sheldon has always been eminently readable, both in her fiction and nonfiction works, but, this time around, new maturity, depth, and texture are revealed and reflected.
Rich and famous, Alexis is a married, Manhattan-based interior designer, blessed with everything, excepting a talent for happiness. Maggie is the controversial actress-mother who abandoned Alexis in childhood. In alternating chapters, Alexis and Maggie tell their sides of the story. Alexis recounts her tale directly to the reader. In Paris, Maggie's side of things is revealed during a rare and uncharacterically frank print interview. Both women's versions of their lives are compelling, thought-provoking, and thoroughly convincing.
Alexis pens new personal history when she begins teaching three teens from a Hell's Kitchen halfway home. Eventually one of Alexis's students gets too close for comfort - both for her husband's comfort, and, ultimately, for her own. Throughout the book, Sheldon's fictional creations seem more like flesh and blood reality than fabrication.
Although the author explores adult themes, this deftly-written novel is one that you can buy with confidence - first, for yourself, and then for your favorite teen or adult reader. Start to sobering finish, Mary Sheldon takes us on an artful, heartfelt, and entertaining ride.
