Damaged
Everyone is damaged but all are not broken What if you were raped at sixteen by the preacherÂ's son? Would you still go to church? What if your mother was a drug addict and you didnÂ't know your father? Would you know how to love? What if your mother taught you to seek the rich and devour the weak? Would you be morally sound? Damaged reveals how oneÂ's past can direct their future. Three stunning black women seem to have it all, but each is damaged by something or someone from their past. Outer beauty is chipped away, inner beauty is hidden and only one will capture both.
Jade Arlington grew up witnessing the unmovable faith her parents demonstrated. She was destined in her mind to remain pure until marriage. Her life spins out of control by none other than the preacherÂ's son, Brian. Innocent time spent together leads to rape and the seed of pregnancy. Jade heads off to a university in Los Angeles, running from one God only to crash into two devils,
Sasha Matthews a self proclaimed gold digger and
Tamara Whitfield a punching bag for Todd, her on-and-off again boyfriend.

A MUST READ.......2004-02-21
I am very impressed with the contrast of the sinful life with the GOOD life with Christ. I think this is a must read book for all parents and should be a discussion book, with the Bible, for all high school classes in the church.
Book Description
In 1974, a new phenomenon burst onto the cultural scene: the Dungeons & Dragons® game.
Armed with dice, pencils, paper, and rulebooks, thousands of people set forth on a quest of the imagination. Along the way, they battled monsters, discovered treasure, and trekked through countless dungeons, keeps, castles, and lairs.
The Dungeons & Dragons experience created an industry. Not only did it spawn similar roleplaying games, it had a profound impact on the burgeoning computer gaming industry. Around the world and over the years, people from all walks of life joined in this game of monsters and magic.
This book is a celebration of that phenomenon and a tribute to the millions of players who brought the Dungeons & Dragons experience to life.
“We were all drawn to the game because it allowed us to become these characters, vastly different in appearance and in actions, but what kept us hooked was the search for the character that represented our higher self. Playing D&D was a training ground for our imaginations and an opportunity to explore our own identities.”

Excellent Expressions of Sentiments.......2007-07-17
I loved the book - but was unable to use it for the reason I purchased it. I was going to give it to my son on Father's Day, as he is the proud first-time father of a precious baby girl. But after looking through it, felt it was not appropriate at this time. Seemed to be more of a book to give a daughter upon graduation or her wedding. The book was not wasted though, as my sister was going to purchase one, so she was the glad recipient of it.
Dads and Little Princesses.......2006-08-21
I recently heard it stated that the most important relationship in the life of a woman is the one that she has with her father. Stay Close Little Girl poignantly describes in gentle and heartfelt words the warmth of that relationship from the moment of birth through the circle of life. Candid photography beautifully complements each verse to create a complete treasure for the spirit of every woman and her dad. I purchased this book as a gift for a dear friend of mine whose daughter is to be married next year. I can't wait to give this to him!
Book Description
Every major American city's social life was once defined by its grand hotel bars. Meet Me in the Bar captures and celebrates the romance, excitement, and grace of these American temples of good living. These landmark watering holes are toasted with foolproof recipes for their signature drinks-including the Boston Ritz Fizz and the Carlyle's Old Cuban-as well as classics such as the Manhattan and the Bloody Mary.
One part travel guide, one part drink recipe book, Thomas Connors's handbook brings to life the greatest hotel bars, from New York's Bemelmans-with its whimsical mural by its namesake, the author of Madeline-to the gently rotating Carousel Bar at New Orleans' Monteleone Hotel. He relates the history of these venerable haunts, peppered with observations and stories told by the men and women who tend their bars.
Meet Me in the Bar is full of historic images of hotel bars during their Golden Age, views as they appear today, as well as stylish color photographs of their appealing drinks. Elegant, sophisticated, and sometimes decadent, these retro drinks will charm lovers of vintage Americana. What bygone skill is more important than mixing the perfect drink?
Customer Reviews:
Interesting book for nationwide traveller.......2007-01-19
A fun read and will direct you to interesting places of some historical signifigance in major cities around the country.
Share the Pleasure.......2005-08-20
This book is delightful. The introductions to the charming hotels alone are worth the price. However, my husband and I have particularly enjoyed the variety and fun in making the wonderful signature cocktail recipes. This is a terrific book for anyone into quality nostalgia. We received it as a gift, and now we share the fun by giving it to others.
For those of us who enjoy sophisticated surroundings..........2005-01-27
In today's world, where Cadillac advertisements proudly portray their cars as loud and obnoxious, and
television slams viewers with excessive visual stimuli....
it is nice to find that not all has become loud, obnoxious and hyperactive.
I have already enjoyed visiting several of these superb hotel bars and
look forward to meeting friends at others featured in your book.
I highly recommend this book to those who appreciate finer things.
Thank you, Mr. Connors and Ms. McConnell - well done !!
Makes me want to visit each Hotel!.......2004-08-10
I have so enjoyed this book that I have decided my new hobbie will be to visit each of the bars mentioned. The pictures, new and old, capture the essence of each Hotel and the recipes are easy to follow and look good enough to drink! I have given this as a gift that has been warmly received many times.

Elsa Schiaparelli (1890-1973) was one of the leading fashion designers of the 1920s, '30s, and '40s. Her fascinating autobiography, first published in 1954, charts her rise from a rat-infested apartment in Rome, to success in fashion, through the war years when she worked for the American Red Cross, to her eventual role as designer to the stars.

If you're a fashionista who's not a babe, you look for clothes that create attention all by themselves. That was the secret of Elsa Schiaparelli, the Italian designer who gave women unusual textures, eccentric patterns and surprising shapes influenced by the Surrealist artists in her circle. In Shocking! The Art and Fashion of Elsa Schiaparelli--a winking reference to her most famous perfume as well as to her designing audacity--Dilys E. Blum celebrates the couturiere whose achievements have long been eclipsed by her rival, Coco Chanel. A frustrated sculptor, Schiaparelli invested many of her garments of the 1930s and '40s with an architectural quality, from aerodynamic, back-swept bustles and overskirts dramatically curved back over themselves to stiff, fan-shaped peplums. She created a hat in the shape of an upside-down shoe, made comfy leopard-skin booties, and incorporated such novelties as monkey fur and Rhodophane, a transparent man-made fabric. Her clothes were worn by Mae West and heiress Millicent Rogers, by Helena Rubenstein and French film star Arletty. At her most eccentric, inspired by the artist Man Ray, Schiaparelli produced suede gloves with red snakeskin fingernails. At her most practical, she designed a daring (in 1931) silk tennis costume with a divided skirt. More than 300 stunning photographs, both vintage and contemporary, and a detailed yet lively text made this book a must for anyone interested in the history of fashion. A coordinated exhibition of the same title is at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, through Jan. 4, 2004, before traveling to Paris. --Cathy Curtis
Customer Reviews:
Shocking! The Art and Fashion of Elsa Schiaparelli.......2005-04-21
This is one of the best books about a prominent fashion designer.
Elsa Schiaparelli's work is intelligently analyzed and the book is beautifully illustrated with color and black and white photographs of her designs as well as her domestic and retail interiors. Her collaborative work with artists including Dali and Cocteau is also covered, with photographs of the fruits of their work (eg Surrealistic designs for prints and embroidery).
Six of Schiaparelli's most important collections are covered in detail, including the Circus, Lucky Stars and Music in the Air collections.
Schiaparelli's influence on other designers is fascinating to observe. Most notably on the work of Yves Saint-Laurent in the eighties (strong colors, opulent embroidery) and on John Galliano in more recent years (newspaper prints, trompe l'oeil draping)
This book is a must for all students of fashion design and fashion history.
Shocked.......2004-06-19
Very pretty and informative book about Schiaparelli's design. Reading this book I felt like during my fashion design practise at PPUPPY couture house - charming, excited and in love with fashion.
A Knock-Out !.......2004-04-05
A theatrical studio photo by George Hoyningen-Huene graces the cover of Shocking! The Art and Fashion of Elsa Schiaparelli. Elsa Schiaparelli, the subject of the black and white photo, wears a white gown, feather boa, and an armload of pearls. Shocking pink type announces to the reader that Shocking! Is not an ordinary book about an ordinary fashion designer.
Shocking! documents the recent exhibition of Schiaparelli's designs at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Seen as historical artifacts, her work is as inspirational as it is quirky. Written by Dilys E. Blum Curator of Costume and Textiles at the Philadelphia Museum of Art Shocking! is thoughtful and scholarly. Schiaparelli was an innovative and a visionary fashion designer prolific from the late 1920's to the mid 50's. Known for her associations with artists such as Salvador Dali, Jean Cocteau, Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp, she produced practical clothing as well as surreal masterpieces such as a shoe hat, lobster dress, and gloves with appliquéd fingernails. Some of her innovations which we take for granted include: externally placed zippers, synthetic fabrics, bright colors especially shocking pink, odd mixes of materials together, and architectural silhouettes.
Packed with more than 300 modern and archival of photos of her clothes there is a never-ending source of vibrant visual stimulation within the pages of Shocking! As a side bar for interior design purists, her showrooms were designed by Jean-Michel Frank and there are interesting archival photos of his work. For those interested in fashion history this book is a must have.
FASHIONISTA MUST OF 2003.......2004-01-17
This is a fabulous book, beautifully illustrated and written with much care and research. Schiaparelli is a neglected figure compared with her contemporary and great rival, Coco Chanel, but this book should go a long way towards redressing that balSance.
Worthy of my coffee table!.......2003-11-12
This book is filled with beautiful photographs from the Philadelphia Museum of Art's exhibit. If you can't get to the museum, don't worry. The exhibit can come to you. Well worth the reasonable price for so many photos and sketches. Inspiring for anyone who considers sewing an art form. Schiaperelli was truly an artist and a master of her craft. She created innovative and eccentric designs, while celebrating the female figure and without compromising form and function. I couldn't be happier with this book.

Maximalism: The Graphic Design of Decadence and Excess
ASIN: 0823030776 |
Book Description
The history of architecture, like that of all art forms, has fluctuated over the years between two very marked trends: austerity and opulence of form and concept. Styles have alternated from simplicity to exuberance, eventually reaching an eclectic period in which rationalist works coexist with postmodern structures, minimalist interiors, and crowded atmospheres. Minimalism/Maximalism presents a resplendent collection of buildings that illustrate these two very dissimilar styles. The creators of these projectsamong some of today's most prestigious architectsdemonstrate that after a long period of austere work it's time for a new, cutting-edge designone that is more complex, with an enriching mixture of materials, forms, and functions. Filled with 370 lavish color images and 50 architectural plans, this guide compares and contrasts an array of minimalist and maximalist examples. Readers will find impressive homes, offices, and shops created by Frank O. Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhass, Ettore Sottsass, and 20 other designers. Plus, clear, descriptive text details how minimalism/maximalism influenced other disciplines such as graphic design. Whether one is an architect, interior designer, contractor, or homeowner, Minimalism/Maximalism is a never-ending source of style and inspiration.

Great Introduction to a New Architectural Style.......2003-01-31
This book introduces the term Maximalism to descibe the current trend of 'more is more' design. An example of a minimalist space is given, juxtaposed against the featured design of a similarly used space (offices vs. offices, restaurants vs. restaurants, etc.). Highlights include the colorful designs of the MTV headquarters, the Queens Museum of Art, and the Christian Lacroix Store in Tokyo. A section on Maximalist furniture closes out the book.
Book Description
Four Wisconsin artists, Martha Glowacki, Mark Lorenzi, Natasha Nicholson, and Mary Alice Wimmer, are passionate collectors who use objects from their own collections to inform their individual artwork. This catalog documents an installation by each of the four artists that is reminiscent of the 16th- and 17th- century Wunderkammer, or cabinet of wonders, private collections of natural and man-made objects.

Book Description
This spellbinding biography of the R.M.S. "Titanic's" historic builder, Thomas Andrews, takes readers from his boyhood on the cricket fields of Northern Ireland to his breathtaking final moments aboard a dying ship.
Customer Reviews:
Uncanny.......2007-08-19
I bought this book on a whim for my daughter who is interested, like most young people, in the amazing sequence of events that lead to the sinking. I am a sceptic about reincarnation but this book has got me wondering. As well as the interesting accounts from William Barnes it contains a good deal of specific information about Titanic and her construction, most gleaned from archival material, or is it?
A Very Compelling Story.......2007-07-22
I had a chance to talk with the author a few years ago and found his story to be a fascinating account of one man sharing the memories of another. Since reincarnation is not consistent with my own beliefs, I cannot explain these experiences, but I do find them compelling and worth the time to hear and read. Although the Andrews family and the Titanic Society adamantly denounce Barnes (not his real name) and his story, there is too much he should not have known, and even could not have known. Even if it were possible, I cannot imagine anyone willing to do a comprehensive study of a man only to be viewed as a demented nutjob by his peers. Even if you don't believe in reincarnation, I give Barnes' story an enthusiastic five stars. He used to have his own website, but alas, seems to have otherwise vanished. It's too bad as I think his story would make an excellent movie.
Compelling !.......2006-10-29
Having read a great deal about the Titanic, I find his hypnotic episodes very interesting, and very accurate, as we know the facts up to this date.
I do feel sorry for him having to live with this all his life, and no one to back him up. We purchased it immediately after seeing him interviewed on tv.
Well writen and interesting; if you care for either Titanic in general, or sunken ships at all. A good read, but even better on audio disc.
Journey into time.......2004-12-04
On a cold Saturday I sat to read this book without any expectations as to its ability to interest me.
As I began reading the unfoldment of Tommie's life, I was no longer sitting at home but rather sitting in a bubble of time watching the progress of events that presented themselves in movie-like clarity.
By the end of the book I finally noticed the sun had set and needed a reading light.
This is not so much a narrative of events past, but rather a re-enactment of a drama that uses the reader's mind as a stage to play out a story that even today captures the imagination and fascination of thousands.
To me, not so much because of the magnitude of the calamity that happened in mid-ocean, but because it is exemplar of the real-life battle between the integrity and righteousness of the soul and the barely concealed evil of ignorance and selfish blindness in materially obsessed ego.
Perhaps there are those that think the story has an unhappy ending, but the fact that it had to be written by the one who lived it, is proof positive the justice (karmic or Divine) is not an obscure concept, but a spiritual reality.
Time and the efforts of the unjust, do not destroy truth, they just delay its inevitable revelation.
I think the measure of readers liking this story or not, depends on their willingness to surrender their minds to be transported to a different time and to be shown a simple truth:
"This is what happened"
Half a century and all the learned men of the world could not hide it.
Did I forget to mention that I liked it?
W. Silva
A Classroom must! A most valuable teacher resource!.......2004-11-11
Poignant. This book enables one to become acquainted with the life of a master shipbuilder whom had a promising life ahead of him. This book reaches deep and touches one soul beyond belief. A most valuable teacher resource. A classroom must for history in regards to Titanic and her builder. Highest of praise! This book leaves the reader/listener with a sense of them knowing the designer and understanding the trials and tribulations of one most determined man. I am eternally grateful to the author for his meticulous dedication on the life of Thomas Andrews Jr.
