How This Night Is Different: Stories

Amazon.com
There are some short-story writers who seem too knowing, too eager to nudge the reader in the ribs with an authorial elbow. Others seem not knowing enough, as if they'd never quite gotten a purchase on their material. But in her first collection, Foreign Brides, Elena Lappin has already discovered the golden mean. Her tales of emigrant life--and more specifically, intermarriage among the tribes of Israel, Russia, England, and the United States--are unfailingly witty. Yet the author never keeps herself too far above the fictional fray, which ensures that the pain in these stories is no mere postmodernist construct but, well, painful.
In "Noa and Noah," for example, an Israeli bride finds herself hard-pressed to adjust to British life, even if her new husband does sport an Old Testament moniker and a kippa. In fact, Noah's charms have almost entirely evaporated after a year of marriage, and what once appeared to be endearments turn out to be a form of erotic cheerleading:
She had also by now finally deciphered and demystified her husband's sexy mumblings which invariably accompanied their lovemaking: the words Arsenal and Tottenham came up a lot, with very unsexy adjectives describing various players and plaintive remarks about their technique. When she had first grasped this remarkable fact, Noa simply asked Noah why he had to think and talk about football during sex. He had answered, without the slightest hint of embarrassment, that he thought about football all the time, and saying his thoughts out loud during sex helped him slow down.
It would be unfair to disclose Noa's response to her increasing disillusionment. Suffice it to say that it involves a neighborhood butcher and some very nonkosher behavior in the boudoir. Not all of Lappin's characters hit upon such delectable (and surprisingly low-fat!) solutions. In "Peacocks," a similarly distraught émigrée falls back on cab driving and a spot of extortion to maintain her mental health. "Bad Writing" features a German transplant, also a woman, who neutralizes the nastiness of her marriage by turning it into prose. Not every story in Foreign Brides quite clicks. But Lappin is a funny and formidable talent, and her next project--a novel with the intriguing, Gogolian title of The Nose--should be worth sniffing out as soon as it hits the shelves. --Anita Urquhart
Book Description
In the stories that comprise Foreign Brides, women (and men) cope with marriage across cultures in London, New York, and a constellation of European and Israeli cities. Transplanted from one country to another, women like Israeli Nora, Russian Vera, and German Paula settle into lives of persistently unfamiliar if not utterly strange routines, lives that are stirred up from time to time with a very crooked stick. With perfect pitch and a poker face, Lappin has composed these insidiously funny tales about love and survival in an international no-man's land of marriage.

Really good book.......2005-08-24
This book is one of my favourites, it is gripping and immensely enjoyable
Dull and unappealing stories.......2004-09-09
The common denominator for all the short stories in the book is that the main character is always a foreign bride.
To me there was something dull and unappealing in the stories. Perhaps because the first story set the tone: the bride is too young to know what she is doing, and marries the groom in a whim and then regrets is dearly. I must admit that the story was well written, because it transmitted the sense of defeat and despair that a young woman in a foreign country and a loveless marriage must feel.
One of the stories, Black Train, has an interesting passage: "All émigrés have the same basic story to tell: there is that small death when they leave their home country, there is that short-lived euphoria when it looks like they've been blessed with a chance to rewrite their scripts in a free society, and then comes the life-long sadness once they realize that they have made an irreversible choice to cut themselves off from their roots. They can appear successful and lead exciting lives - but they will always feel like second-class citizens, wherever they are. And that huge void inside will never, ever be filled."
This got me thinking, because i am an émigré, yet i don't subscribe to those thoughts. Maybe if i had left my country for political reasons, and could never go back, but in this day and age, where you can be on the opposite corner of the world in a matter of hours, where's the trouble? As time goes by, boundaries blur and distances shorten. This reminds me of a long-forgotten song, titled "My Country, my shoes".
Defintiely not a Must-Buy.......2001-12-31
Good, but not especially memorable stories of women who made foreign marriages: either Americans who married non-Americans, or non-Americans who married into American families. I read the book several months ago, and none of the stories remains clear in my mind. Worth a trip to the library, but don't bother to buy it.
Excellent!.......2001-03-22
I thought this book was absolutely wonderful. It is clever, beautiful, touching, and very well written. A fabulous read!!
almost great, short stories too dang short.......2000-12-28
I have a foreign bride, Jewish Ukrainian and I'm Jewish American, so I was drawn to the title. I found the writing quite good and stories sometimes hilarious. But any of the stories could be more developed into something a bit meatier. The first and last story are connected and cleverly done. I like her general attitude about marriage: it might be a bit haphazard, but it can be an anchor for our lives and fulfilling despite the apparent randomness of mate selection. I liked it.
Book Description
Trapped in an evil spell… can the knights of Paladin be rescued?
Before vowing his allegiance to Wulder as a knight, Bardon heads to the mountains for solitude. His life is suddenly complicated by a woman and her granddaughter, N’Rae, on a mission to rescue the woman’s son trapped in a chamber of sleep. Bardon learns that more of Paladin’s knights are imprisoned–and suspects one of them is Dragon Keeper Kale’s missing father.
The secret is in their hands–and hearts.
The band travels north, uncertain of their destination and encountering numerous perils. When they unlock the chamber, they discover a dozen knights–who cannot be awakened. The journal holding the secret to rousing them is in an unknown language. How can they find the help they need, and overcome even graver obstacles, to rescue the knights?
Return to the land of dragons and magic you discovered in Dragonspell and DragonQuest, in this finely crafted and memorable work of fantasy fiction with a core of eternal truth.
Customer Reviews:
love this series!.......2007-09-09
ever since i "discovered" dragonspell at my christian bookstore, i've been a fan. this book was just as captivating and fun to read as the others.
wonderful conclusion to a satisfying series.......2007-05-06
I loved the attention shifted to Bardon and his journey of self-discovery. Particularly compelling was his struggle with faith. Paul creates such an authentic depiction of how people do often lose their way and then find their way back.
Though Kale is missing throughout most of the book, when she is reintroduced, it is nice to see her maturity and growth. What I like about this series (somewhat reminiscent of J.K. Rowling's greatness as a writer(though this series is NOTHING like Harry Potter)) is Paul's ability to successfully age her characters. In other words, in each book you feel the characters' actions, language, etc. are representative of their age. Authors often struggle in this capacity.
I'd rate it more of a 4.5, but pushed down to a four (rather than up to a five) because some of the book is a little plodding and the many side characters hard to track or superfluous.
Decent Fantasy Which Tries Too Hard at Times.......2007-04-15
Having been given this text as a Christmas gift, I finally picked it up after reading a slew of non-fictional books. Expecting something with excitement and fantastic action, I was dismayed to find a somewhat-lukewarm text which could at times enrapt me but at other times be dreadfully overbearing. On a whole, the text is a simple and quick read, with many of the normal fantastic elements of "sword and sorcery" which entice fantasy fans. However, Ms. Paul's style is forced in one major, making the book dull precisely where it should have been most intriguing.
There is no hiding the fact that "Dragon Knight" is written to be a Christian work, something which should give the text more character, depth, and meaning. However, much of the Christian overtones take the form of pedantic iterations of scripture-like verses which stifle conversation and eliminate much enjoyment of the text. This style of writing seems to make the Christian-influencing of a work nothing more than the provision mere proverbial wisdom instead of an edifying infusion of the Spirit of Truth. The lack of subtlety can become very onerous and destroys much of the secondary creation of the fictional reality.
On the whole, I give the text somewhere between 2.5 and 3 stars. It is most definitely not a complete bomb of a work but is not philosophically or theologically thought-provoking.
This book series is great!.......2007-01-16
Okay, so I finished all three of them, and this is what I thought.
First, they were great! The story was interesting, the world was interesting, the characters were interesting. Not one of those usual "Elf, dwarf, human warrior" sort of stories. This one was really fresh with a whole bunch of neat races and animals I'd never heard of or anything before. Very refreshing, even if I do like the typical fantasy races.
Second, the characters were very realistic and easy to relate to. You wanted to like them. And the ones you didn't really like, the other characters didn't really like, either. Or you were given a reason to like them later on with the other characters. Very nice. The dragons were simply adorable and lovable and wonderful. And they were portrayed as intelligent, each one with special talents just like people, rather than blood-thirsty monsters who we're supposed to kill. I like that. That's the way dragons should be portrayed. (Of course, you want to kill the bad dragons, but not all of them are bad, so it's okay. Those situations don't count)
Third, I loved all of the Christian symbolism and virtues throughout all of the books. How Wulder represents God and the Pretender represents Satan. It was very interesting, and I love how the author made the characters have to learn about their religion and how each of the characters were given a choice. It's brought up several times throughout the series that everyone is given a choice to follow Wulder or not to. Of course, there are several other things brought up in the books as well, and the author does a wonderful job of bringing in and explaining the Christian principles.
Things I didn't like.
The third book. The first two books were all about Kale, and I have to say I was SO disappointed that the third book wasn't about Kale, too (at least, not until near the very end). Don't get me wrong, I like Bardon, and it was nice getting to see his point of view and deal with some of the problems he was going through, but... There was a distinct lack of dragons. I kept reading with the hope that Kale would finally come back, and she didn't until I was nearly finished with the book! It's probably just me who was upset by this, but Kale just stole my heart, and the dragons were always around her. Without Kale, there wasn't a lot of dragon interaction, and... well, Bardon is boring. I feel like the book didn't really get interesting until Kale showed up, and by then the story was so close to the end that I had very little to keep me busy. Nice twist at the end, though.
Perhaps the next book will be Kale-heavy again?
Wonderful fantasy read.......2007-01-05
I have read all three of the books in this series. DragonKnight does not disappoint. I've read fantasy books all my life but have never fallen in love with a series until this one.
Donita Paul's books are wholly Christian with a beautiful allegory to Christ. But they are also wholly fantasy with dragons, magic, sword fights, and adventures. These are appropriate for every age group. I can't wait until my toddler is old enough to understand them--they are perfect read-aloud family books.

Customer Reviews:
Skips huge sections of plot indiscriminately.......2007-01-17
This was a good story but it was not fully developed. There are many plots in this story that were just abandoned and that left me with a strange feeling of dissatisfaction with the novel overall. (Example, when the main characters explore a new region of space, and they find nothing but a piece of a toilet...and then nothing else happens in that entire multi-page part of the novel). The ending was ridiculous and similarly cut short. Perhaps this book suffers from terrible editing, or perhaps the paperback was just badly typeset which damaged the story, but there were many grammatical errors and whole missing paragraphs. I liked the premise of the story, but it was not developed and left me extremely dissatisfied, as if the climax has been edited out.
Not bad for an early book.......2004-01-21
This is one of Greg Bear's early work. The reader can already see that Bear is great at developing both an intriguing story and well defined characters. The problem with this book is that it leaves the reader feeling unfinished. Compared to his later works "Darwins Radio" and "Queen of Angels", this is unfinished work. It is not bad, just not finished. Much of the underlying society study that he has become so familiar for developing is missing, although there are hints of it in this book. This is both enjoyable and an easy read. It is also a great book to start with for Bear. It is certainly not one of his best, but it does show his early start and that is not bad.
annoying production issues.......2003-11-03
There's something wrong with the text of this edition of the book. I think they dropped some lines in the production process. There are many places where one character speaks twice in a row, and the second is a response to some question or statement by another character, which was dropped. I also found a couple of sentences that just end in mid-sentence. It doesn't make the story too hard to follow, but it's definitely annoying. Not recommended (and I'm going to be very hesitant about buying other books published by "ibooks").
Beyond Heaven's River not quite..........2000-10-18
Firstly this book is not out of print - my edition is a 2000 edition by Millenium (a Gollancz brand) and is available on amazon.co.uk.
The premise/promise of this story is typical of Bear in that you get completely wrapped up in this new universe across which the human race roams. The two key characters are real enough and both face serious challenges on a personal basis, and along the way you see a future with nicely painted in technologies and alien artifacts (in fact two of the characters live in a giant alien spaceship picked up at an apparent bargain). The story line passes from WWII to well into the 26th century while remaining true to the reader.
I picked up this book after enjoying Darwin's Radio which is a great read - that novel is complete in that it allows Greg Bear to really complete his story. Unfortunately Beyond Heaven's River is a much shorter story and leaves me with the feeling that "it had to be wound up" for want of a solid ending.
After all that I should say that it is still a good read, just not Bear's best.
Sublime and Inventive to boot........2000-01-12
"Beyond Heaven's River" is a well-plotted novel, something that seems to be increasingly rare in the world of Science Fiction. Maybe it is because it is a sparsely printed, 250 page novel, instead of some 600 page, mini-script, sloppy "epic". For that reason alone it is weel worth reading; there can be good, short SF novels. Beyond that, Bear has constructed a wonderfully sublime, if a bit overly vague, universe, inhabited by unseen aliens and filled with motivated, imperial human beings. Within this context, a Japanese soldier, from the early 20th Century is an interesting point of view to follow through the bizarre, soul-searching, (dare I say?) epic.

Book Description
At last, a book that explains Pagan spirituality to non-Pagans in a balanced, accessible way, while acknowledging the natural anxiety many of them may feel when confronted by a son, daughter, sibling, friend, or co-worker who suddenly proclaims, "I'm a Witch!" Wicca and Paganism are among the world's fastest growing religions. Because so many Wiccan newcomers are young, it may be understandably worrisome, even frightening, to many of the parents, other family members, friends, and associates of today's witches. This book offers an objective, honest introduction to this newly popular old religion, while providing comfort to worried readers. Non-Pagans will appreciate this fair and responsible overview of one of the most mysterious-and misunderstood-modern spiritual paths.
Customer Reviews:
Someone else said it- great idea, poor execution.......2006-11-01
The books promises more than it actually delivers. It's attitude towards other monothesitic religions is condescending, and the feeling of elitism is present through the entire book. Furthermore, the author compounds this by "fluffy" statments on the nature of Pagan practice and a seeming ingnorance not only on the more spiritual levels of Witchcraft, but also on many of the questions he tried to answer himself!
I bought this book to help a loved one understand my religion, and now I see all I have done is waste my money.
Get your family and friends on the right path .......2006-02-26
Frankly, I was very concerned when I first ran across this book. I wondered if it was a 'fundie' text imploring people to convert my Wiccan friends to Christianity. What a pleasant surprise when I opened up the text and found out it is not.
As others have accurately noted however, the well-intentioned author simplifies Wicca. He then attempts to lump this in with Paganism. Wicca and Paganism are two different concepts. Perhaps the text itself could be toned up in another version of the book.
Overall, this is a useful resource for people who want to be supportive, but are not sure what they are supporting. It would be an important purchase for local libraries---where `concerned people' might turn after learning the news about a loved one.
The title is important as it is in order to reach the wavering people who would otherwise be susceptible to 'bible-thumping' propaganda about these very practices. Most importantly, the book does not condemn the practitioner and instead encourages readers to accept them as they are.
Great book............2005-07-19
This is a very good book for people that have no idea or the wrong idea of what Wicca is. I agree with 80-90% of the material, not that the other 10-20% is wrong just that I see things a bit differently.
EEEEEWWWW!.......2004-11-16
I was suspicious from the get-go with this title. It sounded too much like "When Someone You Love Is Dying/Has Cancer/Has AIDS" -- the kind of literature one gets from clueless but well-intentioned counselors. I had to force myself to get more than three pages into the book. And, I confess, I could not bring myself to finish it.
Specifically, it trotted out every fear and misrepresentation and half-truth about Wicca: "You may have heard <this>" and "Many people believe that we do <that>." And then pointed out how wrong these ideas were, as if all Wiccans held a multi-colored but monolithic block of beliefs.
Unfortunately, both when I read this as a practicing Wiccan and when trying to read it from the "curious co-worker" viewpoint, I became defensive. It seemed both apologetic and self-righteous. It tried to be deferential, but came off as condescending: "You poor, misguided mainstreamer! Here, let me set you straight."
Further, it tried to lump Wicca, Witchcraft and Paganism into one large blob, allowing that there were differences in practices among these folks, but that they were related enough for this text to be inclusive. Ha!
My advice: If you need something to hand to a Nervous Parent or Concerned Friend, either Scott Cunningham's "The Truth About Witchcraft Today" (Llewellyn Publishing), or Tuitean & Daniels' "Pocket Guide to Wicca" (Crossing Press) does a much better job of factual presentation without paranoia. (Pocket Guide has a potential advantage of not having the word "witchcraft" in the title -- an insurmountably scary word for some folks.)
Great idea, poorly executed.......2004-05-21
I was very, very disappointed with this book. I bought it to share with my boyfriend to help me answer some of his questions about my religion. I decided to read it first, and realized that he already knows more than this book provides, and probably in a much better light.
It's written on a 4th or 5th grade level, very simplistically, which makes it sound not all that intelligent, and by result could give the impression that Wiccans are not all that intelligent as a whole-- which is definitely the opposite of my experience. It lacks any beauty, any real insight, and I don't know why people are saying it was well researched, as it is something anyone with a basic understanding of Wicca could write. If it were my own first exposure to the old religion, I'd probably walk away shaking my head & saying, "Those people need a reality check."
It could be useful in a limited sort of way, ie, the boss that needs to see something in print that you're not a devil worshipper, but you don't care if he has any real understanding- but I strongly suggest reading it before giving it to anyone you truly want to understand.

The secret to preparing Japanese cuisine at home is an understanding of the basic ingredients and how a meal is composed. The culinary methods used are basically very simple and this book shows you how with step-by-step instructions. With a glossary of sushi terms and a section on sushi etiquette, making or ordering sushi will never be intimidating again.

Not for Beginners.......2002-08-23
Takahasi's cookbook is great, tasty, and the food is to die for. If you've the means, that is. The sad thing about this cookbook is that there's alot of tasty stuff, and all the ingredients are hard to come by. Plus, if you've never made sushi before, you're in for a wild ride.
I only wish it came with a bamboo roll mat. My kitchen would be much cleaner that way.
Quality book, hits all the key points.......2001-11-24
For 3+ years I have endavored to learn the finer
points of eating and making sushi, and to date my
skills have been derived from 3 books (Sushi Made
Easy, Tsuda; Quick & Easy Sushi Cook Book, Tohyama;
The Book of Japanese Cooking, Kazuko), eating at
many sushi restaurants, and trial and error by making
sushi at home weekly to monthly.
I am now convinced that there is no single source for
all the things one would like to know about eating and/or
making sushi, but the book 'The Great Sushi and Sashimi
Cookbook' comes very close.
Written by two sushi chefs trained in Japan, what impresses
me most about the book is the authors ability to cover the
topics of history, etiquette, ingredients, cuts and cutting,
techniques and types of sushi and sashimi in a minimal number
of pages, and yet achieve a depth and breadth of discussion
that I have not seen in other books. Next most impressive
is the quality of the photographs and paper upon which the
book is printed; coffee table book quality.
I would score 'Sushi Made Easy' and 'Quick & Easy Sushi
Cook Book' as 4s, but give this book a 5 for hitting all
the key points.

Customer Reviews:
Not another cookie cutter feng shui book!.......2002-03-26
I've recently started reading about feng shui and chinese astrology and have read about 8 books so far. This was one of the best. It's an easy and entertaining read w/a lot of different info from the typical beginner feng shui book. Mr. Lau takes you through the whole process of feng shui w/an interesting history to help readers have a better understanding of why you're placing items where and what items not to use--he doesn't mention crystals and be VERY cautious w/bells and wind chimes. I would have liked to read even more of his practical cures since he also stresses that you don't need to spend a lot of money to cure most situations, that w/creativity, you can find cures w/in your budget. Well worth the time and money!
An honest and authentic approach to Feng Shui.......1999-09-16
This is the most concise and honest book on Feng Shui I have read. Written by a practitioner who has a long family lineage of the Nine Stars Feng Shui school - the oldest in China - it provides an excellent in-sight on the origins of Feng Shui and traces its evolution throughout the dynasties. The author is more concerned with the wisdom of Feng Shui than with focusing on how to improve one's life. He remains faithful to the compass school which is the traditional way of exercising this ancient sacred art. Clearly, the author has chosen not to expand on the higher levels of Feng Shui, but prefers to guide the reader through the practical steps to apply it and bring harmony in the home. In its essence, this art has much to teach us and the author is to be commended for presenting it in such a simplified and authentic manner.
A different perspective.......1999-03-26
The book was not as easy to read as the usual Feng Shui book for the Westerner. Also, instead of the total Bagua influence, there is more focus on the compass directions, the combinations of the elements and influence of color. The space is regarded as a whole, not a room by room analysis. There is one practice study. I am not sure which approach is best in Feng Shui, but this book made me more focused on other aspects rather than total bagua approach. It also doesn't treat every space as wonderful, but points out much of the negative while offering solutions.
not very informative.......1998-01-22
This book, when compared to other books on this subject, gives very little information. It is sparse in content, very poorly written and obviously is written to provide just a cursary glance at a subject which at present has a great deal of interest in the United States.
