Book Description
Hayward Theiss is on the lam, hiding out in a Malibu beach house that is not his and trying to figure out how he got there. A car crash, a bag of dope, a sinister producer, and his best friend's strange escape from rehab all complicate matters further. But in trying to understand his circumstances, Hayward begins to untangle the convoluted affair and subsequent estrangement between his great-grandfather, the massively ambitious robber baron Finn Theiss, and sharpshooter Annie Oakley. The author, a relative of Annie Oakley himself, weaves in beautiful excerpts from Oakley's autobiography that have never appeared in book form. Brumbaugh writes with the exquisite, tossed-off precision of a master chef preparing an early dinner for friends. Readers of Michael Cunningham, Rick Moody, Leonard Michaels, and Jeffrey Eugenides will be thrilled at the arrival of this new voice—and this new take on coming-of-age while fervently reckoning with the past. Goodbye, Goodness is a simultaneously hopeful and bleakly realistic, hilarious, and devastatingly sad book about the American dream coming to the end of the line.

Best in a long time.......2005-05-18
This truly is the best novel I've read in a while. It seems dense at first, but goes fast - once I past the half-way point I couldn't put it down. The style is descriptive, but not too thick. Every point is there for a reason. The stories in this book were on my mind for days once I reached the end. I was so emotionally attached to the story line that I was quite disapointed to be finished with it. For the first time in a long time I can say that I will be reading this book again & cannot recommend it highly enough. thank you!!
Cool Writer........2005-04-12
This is a tense and gripping book. The characters are revealed in a paced, measured way. Brumbaugh's wry humor and sensitivity in his portrayal of the lost souls who form the subject matter of the novel makes great reading. Highly recommend it.
Great book!!!.......2005-04-12
This is a great book. It is sometimes really funny and sometimes really sad and always beautiful. The writing and the characters (like people you might know but just a little more unique and extreme) make it hard to put the book down once you start reading.

The most powerful super-hero love story in years is finally collected! "My husband was a hero, but he never cared about the fame and I love him for it. I just loved him." - Grace, wife of the super-hero called Fade.
Customer Reviews:
AN UNDERSTATED SUPER HERO TITLE.......2005-12-20
Image comics has put out two of the more unique books on the superhero genre in the past year. The first was Ultra: Seven days by the Luna Brothers and now comes this touching and refreshing superhero tale, Fade from Grace. Fade from Grace is a good, old fashioned love story masquerading as a superhero tale, told through the eyes of Grace and with a distinctively feminine point of view. John is in love with Grace and inexplicably discovers one day that he has super powers when he has to rescue Grace from a fire.
John can cause his body to fade in and out...as well as other objects, but can also make his body super dense. John explores his powers, testing them out with an almost child-like curiosity, with Grace at his side for encouragement. He soon takes his new found powers to the streets, battling local thugs and organized crime, taking the moniker "Fade", as he and Grace have a hilarious time trying to find just the right costume to wear.
John eventually runs up against a "Lex Luthor-like" villain Mr. Dante, complete with a battle suit. The city watches the pair battle it out atop a high rise building. While all of this sounds action packed the crime-fighting is really secondary to the relationship between John and Grace, one of those rare couples that seem to have found eternal and unrelenting love. Soon John will learn the tragic secret behind his powers, however, as he faces his greatest challenge.
The book is written by Gabriel Benson with art by Jeff Amano. With a minimal amount of dialog, it is Amano's art that really tells the story. Amano's art has a cartoon quality to it, devoid of fine line detail and opting for a radical color scheme that enhances the love tale. Rarely have I seen a book where color and shadow played such an important role in the story. Fade from Grace is a book that may put off traditionalist comic book fans but I urge them to give it a try. At the same time, it's a great book to show non-comic fans just how powerful and sincere a comic story can be if handled with care. As with Ultra: Seven Days, Fade from Grace is a book with a lot of character and heart.

balancing David's silly review.......2004-06-04
Hey, Someone has to balance out the review by David from PA. How can you review a book you haven't read because you 'know the spiel'? Based on everything I have ever read by Clapp, I don't think David has a clue about the 'spiel'. How can someone's review be counted when they haven't read the book?
Not liking jazz = sin????.......2004-02-17
I haven't read the book but I know the spiel.
You've got to be kidding. In the first place, in the circles I run, Christianized pop music (which comes from rock'n'roll, which comes from r & b, which comes from jazz) is s. o. p. In the second place, I don't like jazz because I don't like jazz. I have a half-a-dozen jazz sets in my collection. Never listen to them anymore, for much the same reason I don't listen to the rock artists I used to listen to: classical music is, for me, spiritually and aesthetically superior. That doesn't make me a racist.
Then again, if I'm a racist, the author is a cultural cross-dresser. Which he has the perfect right to be, just don't be so expletive deleted superior about it.
These pundits posing as prophets... Yuck...
John Coltrane, Jesus, and the X-Files.......2001-09-20
Rodney Clapp reconciles being a Christian and loving jazz in this thoughtful, intelligent and entertaining work. He covers how theologians are becoming increasingly irrelevant, points out how the church's refusal of jazz points to its sin of racism, and questions how the church can become as effective in its mission as the multinational corporations. Clapp displays a thorough and real understanding of Christian faith and contemporary culture, but never disappears in technical language or recycled, stale "God talk." I highly recommend this book for pastors, laypeople, and theologians of all sects and political affiliations. Everyone will be challenged and affirmed.

Customer Reviews:
This is a good Sparklz book.......2007-01-01
I wasn't sure how this book would be after the disappointing Coro book but it is very good. There are lots and lots of photos of a wide variety of figurals. The pricing seems pretty average for the industry too. This is a good one!

Extensive, large, and exquisitely photographed, this handsome volume lives up to its promise of "carv[ing] a clear path through the endless possibilities presented by a naked window." Taking into account all sorts of window styles and room types, design journalist Clifton-Mogg explores many approaches to window treatments (as well as related applications, such as room dividers, wall hangings, and bed draperies), explaining how to choose curtains, shades, blinds, shutters, and valances to complement almost any type of decor. From dark velvet opulence to sheer white simplicity, there are ideas galore. Before you hire a professional to clothe your windows, or even if you have the skills to execute the construction yourself, find your visual inspiration here first. --Amy Handy

Customer Reviews:
An inspired and inspiring book!.......2000-10-22
I absolutely LOVE this book. I hardly ever read the text in decorating books--preferring to absorb the pictures and captions--but I actually read this one and learned a lot about the topic. Now I open up this book, look at a few pages, and then feel inspired to go and try my own take on some of the ideas shown. It gets me going for a weekend filled with projects!! One of the best decorating books I've bought (and, guiltily, I've got quite a stash.)
Curtains/A design Resource book.......2000-06-21
This book is great for anyone searching for ideas for a clean modern sophisticated interior. The design concepts are tailored for the transitional to contemporary home. It is not a resource for curtain construction.
Great Visual Ideas.......1999-07-12
I thought the book had some really great ideas for window dressing but as an amateur trying to achieve the looks on offer, felt the instructions on making could be made easier. I had to find another book with easier intructions and follow the two books in order to make my curtains!
Don't waste your time if youre really interested in curtains.......1999-06-24
This book is not for someone who truly wants a resource book for making curtains. There's not a lot to this book, just some 70's style window treatments, no real substance. It's pretty to look at, once, then sit on the coffee table.
lots of pictures; little instruction.......1999-03-22
There are many well-done photographs of rooms and windows, but not enough detail and instruction for a Design resource.

Book Description
Cedric Price Architects was established in 1960 and this book features works from its early years - iconic projects such as The Fun Palace and Potteries Thinkbelt, built projects such as London Zoo's Aviary, and many less well-known schemes and writings. Additional essays are contributed by eminent architectural historians Reyner Banham, Royston Landau and Robin Middleton and colleague/critics such as David Allford, Peter Cook and Warren Chalk.
The Square Book is a faithful reprinting of an original book entitled Cedric Price: Works II, published in 1984 by the Architectural Association (AA). Ron Herron and AA Chairman Alvin Boyarsky had invited Price to make the book to coincide with an exhibition of the work of his office at the AA in June the same year. Price complied "as a favour" to his dear friends although he has always been resistant to the crystallisation of his work in book form, being more inclined towards the immediate and ephemeral nature of magazines and journals. Price states that "there is a point reached where if too much time is required to produce something its operational integrity is marred." This remark is central to Price's thesis that Time is the fourth dimension in architecture and that Change is its champion.
It is timely that such a book should be reprinted. Its purpose is not to provide material upon which to reflect but to serve as fuel to students and practitioners of architecture - a profession that continues to institutionally resist change at the beginning of a new millennium. We are reminded, as Peter Cook writes, that "Cedric is our reference. Our conscience".

Book Description
Frank Capra's films have had a lasting impact on American culture. His powerful depiction of American values, myths, and ideals was central to such famous Hollywood films as It Happened One Night, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, and It's a Wonderful Life. These pre-war films are remembered for their depiction of an individual's overcoming adversity, populist politics, and an unflappable optimist view of life.
This collection of nine essays by leading international film historians analyzes Capra's filmmaking during his most prolific period, from 1928 to 1939, taking a closer look at the more complex aspects of his work. They trace his struggles for autonomy against Columbia Pictures head Harry Cohn, his reputation as an auteur, and the ways in which working within studio modes of production may have enhanced the director's strengths.
The contributors also place their critiques within the context of the changing fortunes of the Hollywood studio system, the impact of the Depression, and Capra's working relationships with other studio staff and directors. The contributors' access to nineteen newly restored Capra films made at Columbia during this period fills this collection with some of the most comprehensive critiques available on the director's early body of work.

Customer Reviews:
Typical Rough Guide consistensy.......2007-03-06
As with many things Aussie, this book has an outdoorsy bent. There's far less history and social content than some other Rough Guides but that said, this book is typical Rough Guide density with encyclopedic coverage. The best thing about this book is that you're not likely to find a place in this vast country without at least a few words written about it. The chapters about particularly remote sections of the country are well done and fascinating to read. A good guide book should make you more anxious to get on with your trip. This one has that effect on me.
I'd like to see a bit more narrative about significant architecture and important institutions, and the book needs a nice new set of maps. There are few really good ones in here.
Gives a few great places a bit of a rough treatment.......2003-06-27
This is another guide written in the same sort of format as Lets Go and Lonely Planet. It is a lot thicker than the Lets Go version and believe me, weight and space are important when lugging the thing around a whole continent. Let's Go also has a fair bit more information than Rough Guide in fewer pages. I also don't like the paper the pages are made of in this book as it's not a nice texture, is very thin and the pages stick together when the book's been inside a hot backpack and just don't feel nice turning the pages when it's a bit humid. Rough Guide is also rather opinionated on everything from each hostel to local information booth staff friendliness. I must say I do agree with some comments but a lot I never had the same experiences. That's the thing about travelling one person can have a great experience with a tourism operator and the next not so good. It depends who else is on the tour, in the room, which staff member you get and so on. If this was a constantly updated website that encourages feedback and changed the information regularly than I would see a place for it but not in a guide book. If you follow the author's opinion you'll miss out on some great experiences and even the places he recommends you may still have a bad time at. That's just the way tourism is. I'd recommend Lets Go over this for backpacking around Australia.
Do not travel to Australia without this book.......2000-07-04
This book was a lifesaver for us on our three week vacation to Australia. The maps within it were fantastic especially on our four day drive up the coast. It was very helpful with regard to accommodation, and finding tourist information offices. We didn't leave our room without it on any day of our trip.

Book Description
In Edward S. Curtis and the North American Indian Project in the Field, Mick Gidley provides an intimate and informative glimpse of Edward S. Curtis (1868–1952) and his associates as they undertook their work in the early decades of the twentieth century. Photographer Curtis embarked on an epic quest to document through word and picture the traditional cultures of Native Americans in the western United States—cultures that he believed were inevitably doomed. Curtis’s project became the largest anthropological enterprise undertaken in this country and yielded the monumental work The North American Indian (1907–30). Its publication was a watershed in the anthropological study of Native Americans and inspired the first full-length documentary film, popular magazine articles, books for young readers, lectures, and photography exhibitions. Housing a wealth of ethnographic information yet steeped in nostalgia and predicated upon the assumption that Native Americans were a “vanishing race,” Curtis’s work has been both influential and controversial, and its vision of Native Americans must still be reckoned with today.
Gidley draws on a wide array of unpublished or uncollected reminiscences, reports, letters, field notes, and magazine and newspaper articles. The reports and reflections by Curtis and the project’s ethnological assistants, memoirs by Curtis family members, and eyewitness accounts by newspaper reporters afford an unprecedented look at the process of anthropological fieldwork as it was commonly practiced during this period. This book also sheds light on the views of Curtis and his contemporaries concerning their enterprise and the Native peoples they worked with and provides a clearer sense of how both Native Americans and the mainstream American public perceived their efforts.
