Leah Hager Cohen has produced a slim little book that proves a point: in the novel, milieu is everything. Heart, You Bully, You Punk (and what a title it is) tells the story of Ann, a math whiz at a private high school in Brooklyn, and two people who loom large in her life: her father, Wally, who owns a restaurant called Game in Manhattan, and her teacher, a quietly mysterious woman named Esker. When Esker and Wally begin to fall in love, Cohen gives us a story that's immediate and elegant, characters who are lovable and maddening, dialogue that's silly and serious and wonderfully human. But what makes this small novel really terrific is its choice of venues: the school and the restaurant. Both locales are wonderfully novelistic, crowded with characters and lousy with rituals recognizable to anyone who has haunted such joints. Ann quizzes her classmate Denise on whether or not she thinks Esker is poignant. "Denise remained unconvinced. 'She's just eerie.' 'Eerie' is a big word this year at The Prospect School, where its connotation is not derogatory; it's a catch-all for anything enigmatic or unplumbed." Likewise, Cohen nails nice little details of the emotional life of a restaurant, like Wally's ritual of having a nightly cocoa with his maitre d', Nuncio. "They've had little manly crushes on each other for seven years; they always will." I am so ANNOYED! I just spent the past four days completely engrossed in Leah Hager Cohen's "Heart, You Bully, You Punk." I couldn't wait to finish it and write a fabulous review on Amazon, because I thought it was one of the most amazing books I'd read in a long time. By the time I read the last chapter, however, I was singing a different tune.

Up until the final few pages, I was absolutely in love with this book. It's a very moving story about Esker, a quirky math teacher at a private New York high school who agrees to tutor one of her students, Ann, following a peculiar incident that leaves both of Ann's legs in casts. Esker eventually meets Ann's father, Wally, and they form an unlikely relationship that is largely based on their mutual loneliness.

Cohen's writing style is exceptional. The novel constantly shifts perspective among the three main characters, but Cohen manages the transitions with ease. The author reaches deep into the minds of Esker, Wally, and Ann, and the reader is instantly able to bond with these three very unique personalities. I was so eager to see how the story would wrap up, but I thought the ending was incredibly rushed and I am very pissed at the way Esker chose to leave things...why did she DO that?! I don't get it! And what the heck happens to the other two characters? Everything is so open-ended and I feel like Cohen completely ripped me off. It's a real shame, too, because I can't say enough good things about the first 200 pages of this 214-page book. I am amazed that a writer as exceptionally gifted as Cohen could manage to screw up what would have been a perfectly wonderful novel, all in the course of about a dozen pages. What a shame. (In spite of my anger about the ending, though, I still have to give the book four stars. The majority of this book is phenomenal. My suggestion is that you stop reading it at the point where the Winter Concert begins and think up your own ending...I'm sure it will be much better than what Cohen dishes out!)

Whoa!.......2005-04-07

I must say I have never read a book by Leah Hager Cohen but this must take the cake! It is absolutely inthrawling. It used great imagery and at times made my head spin with flashbacks! I loved the book...until the end! I must say Heart, You Bully, You Punk seemed to end rather abruptly...but all in all its a rather good book.

This book doesn't deliver.......2005-04-05

This is the off-beat story of Esker, a 31 year old woman who, since her college years, has been haunted by a past relationship disappointment. The question of the story: will she allow a man to love her again? Interesting premise, but there are many problems with the way it was handled: the previous lover was so unloving it's difficult to empathize with the extreme loss Esker's felt in his absence; Esker offers so little in the way of emotional connection to the new man in her life, his continued affection for her doesn't make sense; the book never delivers anything in the way of character growth or change. Nothing happens here. She's unhappy in the beginning. She stays that way. A real disappointment. I got the sense the author was more interested in the way she used language than in what she was actually saying.

Sweet, sad tale of love of all sorts.......2005-03-09

This book delves into all sorts of love-romantic, parental, love of what you do for a living-showing that the emotion, like life, is never perfect.

To do this, Hager Cohen has drawn three intriguing, mostly likeable characters, and by interspersing chapters in the voices of Wally, Esker and Ann, we get cystalline picture of their characters and actions. Ann in particular is a luminous portrait of a teenager both insecure and brave, lovely and awkward, immature yet on her way to other things.

These people Hager Cohen writes about are far from perfect..Ann has a destructive habit of flinging herself from high spaces, Wally is a pushover, staying in a marriage that's long over, Esker shuts herself off from the world for reasons that don't really seem sensible, but thanks to Hager's gift, I could at least sympathesize.

Nicely drawn scenes, well-edited dialogue, and these three memorable characters...I really recommend this.

I loved this book.......2003-06-25

THis book is delightful, refreshing, an engaging read with many layers. Cohen's metaphors, images and referene points made me smile, pause, reach for a highlighter. My only complaint was that it ended too soon.

Excellent.......2003-08-05

Let's start by saying I've been a fan of the Ravenloft setting since it first appeard way back in Module I6 by Tracy and Laura Hickman. I've followed the product line up to present, and I must say this is one fine addition to the legacy. The book is essentially a "technique" book. Designed to allow DMs the ability to shape their Ravenloft campaigns as they see fit and set the mood for a truly creepy delve into the Dread mists. The book offers advice on everything from creating your own misty domains and darklords to what types of music can be used to set a perfect gaming atmosphere. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to run a Ravenloft campaign and even to Dungeon Masters who have no intention of ever exploring the Demiplane of Dread. Many of the techniques and methods described can and should be used in any setting. Buy it. Read it. Live it.

An enjoyable read in the world of "Tek".......1998-07-01

This is another of Shatner's Tek novels and like his previous ones, it too is enjoyable. We continue the adventures of Jake Cardigan and Sid Gomez and the rest of the continuing characters. Since this novel takes place after Tek Vengeance, we have Jake dealing with the death of his lover. This was handled quite nicely and was not dwelled upon. New readers will understand what has happened and longtime readers will see the continued natural progression and growth of the character. In fact, all readers will be able to see the growth of all the characters, including a few new ones that are added to the array. Shatner has built up a world that is believable, interesting and populated with a wide array of characters. This is the fifth novel in the series.

If you need to cut, sand, route, shape, or clamp, this is a great reference book. I have read many shop tip books, and there are ideas here I've never seen anywhere else. And the illustrations are superb.

Not a book- one big advertisement pamphlet.......2003-09-01

I bought this book on clearance at a bookstore thinking I could use the pictures in it for decorating inspiration. It has a lot of beautiful pictures of renovated and decorated homes, but none of the ideas carry over to a person living in an apartment or with a small income. Also the fact that the pages are not very wide but the binding is very thick makes it difficult to view. It is more of a photographic "phone book", a weighty and awkward business card file - a great reference tool if you happen to be one of those people with large budgets wishing to redecorate and don't know where to start. Everyone else, don't waste your money.

Stuck in the Greatest Idiocy Ever.......2006-09-04

These are first hand accounts of men and women that lived through the first world war. It is all there--loyalty to your fellow soldiers, cowardice, indifferent heroism, terror, and the feeling of apartheid from home and family. The most striking rememberances I took from the book were the white feather incidents--where white feathers were given to soldiers out of uniform on leave in England by young women as a goad to get to the trenches.

personal reading milestone.......2005-11-24

This is the first book I've ever read in one day; 'I rest my case'.

My most lingering memory is the story of the soldier who was shot for 'losing his way' and not showing up for a battle. When offered brandy by the narrator before meeting his maker, he said he'd 'never drunk spirits and wasn't going to start now'. Not such a coward, after all.

Fascinating wartime experiences by those who fought it.......2004-07-11

This book is full of fascinating wartime anecdotes given by the soldiers fighting it and the citizens involved in it. The staff of the UK's Imperial War Museum sifted through mountains of archives and picked out the very best to use in the book. Through the use of their own personal letters/interviews, the book follows the history of particular, mostly British, individuals during the war. It loosely follows the major battles of the Western Front and Gallipoli and even the Home Front.

Most of the letters vary in length between one paragraph and one page and are packed with the kind of realistic details that typical narrative histories of the World War I skip over. For example, in Gallipoli (p. 118) one soldier writes, "One of the biggest curses was flies. Millions and millions of flies. ... Immediately you bared any part of your body you were smothered." Short of actually being there, these kind of first person participant narratives deliver the essence of the war - harsh, demanding, brutal, comedic, and ocassionally surreal. The straightforward writing styles and unusual content make this book a true pleasure to read.

I have read over 40 books about the Great War, and this book is one of the best for personal narratives about the war. It's multi-person perspective delivers a well-balanced, insightful picture of the war at ground level (free of any hidden agenda). This book would perfectly complement a broad narrative history of World War I.

A Great Read & Excellent History.......2002-12-23

Max Arthur's new book covering the Great War is quite unique in that its content is nearly all first-hand accounts from people who experienced the horror of the Great War. The author has utilized a number of tape recorded interviews conducted by the Imperial War Museum in 1972. Many of the tapes from the Imperial War Museum Sound Archive had been forgotten and left unheard for years.

Now Max Arthur has put together many of these unheard voices from the Great War to produce this spellbinding and captivating book. I must admit that I was reluctant to buy this book as I was worried that a book full of short accounts would be too disjointed and really not detailed enough to satisfy my interest. I can honestly say that I truly enjoyed reading this book.

Each chapter of the book was a year of the Great War and was commenced by an introduction by the author offering a brief run down on the major events of that year. Then we heard from the men and women who participated in these events, from both sides of no-man's land. The author has concentrated mainly on the Western Front and Gallipoli and has tried to run the oral segments in chronological order.

I was really taken by these segments and I found it hard to stop reading. The accounts from these soldiers and civilians alike were at times humorous, strikingly direct, horrifying and on many occasions quite sad. I was really taken in by these accounts and I don't think that any World War One library would be complete without this title sitting on the shelf. I can honestly say that I learnt quite a few things from this book and I would place it along side such works offered by Lyn MacDonald. Well done to the author and the Imperial War Museum for allowing these veterans, many now long dead, the last word on their experiences in the Great War. This is a great book, you won't be disappointed.

The subject of this book arises from the author's discovery or identification of ten important manuscripts of early seventeenth-century Italian solo song (monody) previously unexplored by modern scholars. Almost by coincidence, the author's research shows that all ten manuscripts preserve portions of Roman repertoire largely by composers associated with the most significant music patron of the period, Alessandro Peretti, Cardinal montalto. Through extensive archival documentation, Cardinal Montalto's patronage of music is set in the broader context of the network of political, economic, and cultural clientela to which Montalto belonged. Hill documents new explanations of the origin of monody, focusing on the roles of Naples and rome and their unwritten traditions. A thorough analysis of the repertoire itself reveals and explains distinct subgenres of monody that have not previously been distinguished. Music for Battista Guarini's last stage work and for the first Roman opera brought forth. Thus, identified, examined, analyzed and placed in context, this repertoire and its genesis call forth a fundamental revision of existing narratives and explanations of the early Baroque vocal music in Rome and the rise of the Italian chamber cantata, next to opera, the most significant musical genre of the seventeenth century.

When teaching film and television in Los Angeles, I had the luxury of having top industry professionals visit my classes. This is simply not possible at universities distant from the major centers of production. However, with Tony Macklin's unique and special tome, I can have many of the all-time greats "visit" my class anywhere. VOICES FROM THE SET will be required reading for all future "Masters of American Cinema" courses I teach-- anywhere...ever.

Voices From the Set is Tony Macklin's collection of interviews from the magazine he edited, the Film Heritage series. Exploring an underappreciated era in film, the early to mid 1970s, Macklin gathered interviews with directors, actors, producers, writers, even film critics who blazened a trail for independent cinema between the twilight years of the studio system and the birth of the blockbuster. The book is meant to be savored one interview at a time, and should give you a great list of films to rent if you're not familiar with them. In his introduction, Macklin calls this particular group of interviews "precious cameos that gain more value as time passes." His discussions include several maverick filmmakers still influential today, such as Martin Scorsese, Robert Altman, Sam Peckinpah and Warren Beatty. Voices also captures the essence of legendary directors and actors Alfred Hitchcock, Howard Hawks, Charlton Heston and Macklin's favorite, John Wayne. Macklin artfully probes below the surface and discusses the artists' feelings and visions, not just dry facts and dates. In the Scorsese interview, Macklin asks him for his opinion on "the new Hollywood" during the early to mid '70s. Scorsese talks at length about this group of influential filmmakers graduating from universities, himself numbering amoung them. He succinctly sums up the era and the reason for reading this book: "They [the old Hollywood] took it as a job...we come in from a whole different level...The old day is dying out, and there is a new Hollywood..."
