Book Description

Transforming the territorial conflict between humanity and animals into a remarkable work of fiction, Hungry for Home is the story of Marta, a cunning wolf mother of the Western United States, and her struggle to protect her family. "Rescued" and relocated by a group of well-meaning naturalists, Marta is determined to return home with her pups.

Their journey, brimming with exciting adventures, heart-stopping hardships, and glorious moments of triumph, takes readers into a world very different from our own. Bowen depicts the wolves without false sentimentality in portraits true to the real nature of wolves in the wild.

4 out of 5 stars Very nice........2006-11-04

Marta is a wolf whose mate dies in the early spring. She has to support three pups with the help of oldtooth, an elderly male. Its the modern age in society, and Marta and Oldtooth travel into a further and more dense area...just to be captured and relocated. It was late summer when she last saw the Dahl Lake, but when she is sent to Alaska, she flees and leaves her pack behind. Without her, her pack dies, will she be next?

I like the broad language use and the many comparisons with things. I also love the plot, and how its based on a different point of view; one we seldom understand. THe survival theme will put readers on the edge as one thing after another unfolds.

4 stars, for good language use, suspence, and plot. Very realistic and eye-opening, with a non-anthropormorphic point of view. If you like the Oddessy-type books, you will love Wolf.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing, Simply Amazing!.......2004-05-01

This is a great book! I would highly recommend it. 'Asta Bowen depicts these wolves lives so realistically that you might think she had walked right along with thwm. It is as if she can think like a wolf, live like a wolf, feel like a wolf, BE A WOLF! This tragic tale is an amazingly moving and catching drama that I would recomend to any one! On a scale of 1-10, it's a 20! I loved it and I hope she writes some more!:-)This book should be included in everyone's home library. I have read it over and over and I have loved it more every time I read it! All I can say is that 'Asta Bowen is an amazing author, simply amazing!

5 out of 5 stars wonderful book, wonderful author.......2001-06-18

This book is amazing. Having 'Asta Bowen, whom I was a student of, read this outloud it was incredable to hear Marta's voice and experience through the person who gave that to her. I hope she will write more books about herself because she has many tales to tell that haven't been told. Great job Ms. Bowen, you're a great inspiration, an excellent teacher and a wonderful writer.

5 out of 5 stars It is a tragic, but a must-read book!.......1999-11-28

An alpha-female wolf named Marta lived in an almost perfect home in Pleasent Valley with her new litter of pups, but are soon "rescued" and relocated to a place where Grizzlies rule. Marta is then confident to return home-with or without the rest of her pack. She then struggles for her life, trying to find enough game to survive. She then finds a place which has much game, few humans, and just an all around great place to live. She then finds a mate and gives birth to her second litter of pups. Soon she...oh, I can't say or I'll ruin the book. You have to read this book! It's a sad book but a good one, too. This is a must read book.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful and heartbreaking.......1999-05-12

This book is a must-read for animal lovers. Live inside the mind of a she-wolf and discover their thoughts, fears, and terrors. It will break your heart and take your breath away and you will think about it for YEARS to come.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but Uneven.......2005-05-04

I went into this book really, really wanting to like it. The characterization was decently good, and the plot was easy to follow, the world interesting. But I was left with a consistent feeling of disappointment. Reichert took the story in unexpected directions, and it left me with the feeling of being jerked around willy-nilly until the story finally settled down.

The second half of the book was superior to the first half, and the series does continue to improve, but if I hadn't already purchased the next volume, I doubt I'd have read it.

5 out of 5 stars A Start to a Great Series.......2004-10-11

Reichert sure knows how to begin a story. From the beginning to the end it is a great cliff hanger. But at the end you don't expect for the person who died will die. I can't wait to finish the series.

5 out of 5 stars Just need to clear things up.......2004-05-07

I was not going to leave a review until I read the last review. You know the crazy one that gave this wonderful book one star. I just would like to go over some of the troubling things that this reviewer brought up. One of his main complants was the fact that most of the characters were dishonest in one way or another. I did also notice this but I took it the way that it was supposed to be taken. No person is perfect ever. At some point all people try to get out of something and all people do somthing dishonest. It happenes in real life and because of that I believe that it makes the book that much more believable. Another one of the complants was the fact that there was no clear good guy or enemy. Again I would agree there was not. Which also made the story more believable. I mean since when in real life does the bad guy have a tatoo on there forehead saying I am a the bad guy. And now we come to the strangest thing that was complained about, the violence. Please take the time now to scroll up to the top of the page and look at the cover of the book...Welcome back. While looking at this book you saw a man swinging two swords down at people from the top of a horse. Now after seeing that could you please tell me how anyone picking up this book could not think that this was going to be violent. Yes your kids more then likly should not read it but that doesn't bring down the book for an adult. Actually I feel stupid now that I did this you should just read the book 35 out of 36 people thought that it was a great book. I personally would rank this as my favorite of all time and I have read a lot of books. (like most every one on this site)

5 out of 5 stars I love these kind of books!!.......2003-02-17

Rache believed that he was the last of his kind. A race of undefeatable swordsmen who kill on average of six enemies for everyone one of there kin slain. As the last of his kind Rache does have the right to teach his skill to others. But who?

His chocies are twofold

A psychotic gladiator that hates his guts
Or the daughter of the local lord

Before this becomes a problem Rache life changes for the wrost. Rumors begin to grow of a war of wizards and Rache hears stories that he may not be the last of his kind after all.

My impression-I have always been a sucker for these vast sweeping epics. My fasination began with the 13th Warrior. This is a great serise, if you can get through the dull part but the book always heats up agian.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book, Great Series.......2002-09-30

I really enjoyed The Last of the Renshai, and the books that come after it. Reichart's best strength in the two Renshai series is her clear understanding of her characters - their personalities, their strengths, their weaknesses, their morality. The plot for the first 3 books isn't anything exceptional - the "standard" mixture of heroes, villains, prophecies, and the-world-is-going-to-end treatment - but there are some nice twists, and there is enough depth in the characters and in how they handle their struggles to make even the tired good-vs-evil, law-vs-chaos conflicts remain interesting.

However, any comparison to Tolkien is a bit, well, ridiculous. Tolkien, Jordan, Donaldson, and other writers in that vein were/are very much world builders, writing sagas that span millenia and encompass large numbers of characters and vast, complex storylines. At the very simplest level, it's a matter of scale, and while I highly recommend The Last of the Renshai and the related novels, it's a different kind of fantasy than that written by Tolkien and company.

The closest "emotional" comparison between Reichart and another author that comes to mind is with R.A. Salvatore. It's just kind of an impression, not anything I can justify logically. I think maybe b/c I enjoyed The Drow Elf trilogy on the same level I enjoyed these books. (As an aside, IMO, Colbey could be naked and unarmed, facing off against an angry Drizz't, and Colbey would TAKE Drizz't's scimitars and whip him like a red-headed stepchild, and THEN he would REALLY educate Drizz't in how to fight with two swords....)

      5 out of 5 stars A rewarding immersion in other-worldly tale-telling.......2004-01-14

Collaboratively compiled and edited by Orson Scott Card, Keith Olexa, and Christian O'Toole, Hitting The Skids In Pixeltown: The Phobos Science Fiction Anthology - Volume 2 collects twelve winning stories from the 2nd annual Phobos fiction contest, as judged by seven distinguished individuals including celebrated authors Orson Scott Card and Larry Niven, and NASA astronaut Marsha Ivins. Mind-expanding quality stories, supplemented with a new feature "The Coldest Place" by jury member Larry Niven, make for a rewarding immersion in other-worldly tale-telling. Hitting The Skids In Pixeltown is enthusiastically recommended to every dedicated fan of science fiction.

5 out of 5 stars Cowboys, Yeti, and Opera Singers.......2003-09-10

If you are hungry for good science fiction, "Hitting the Skids in Pixeltown" will have you drooling like a lion at an antelope buffet. One of the things I love about a good science fiction anthology is the way your brain has to shift gears with each tale, groping around for clues to discover if you are on another planet, in an alternative history, far into a strange future, or still in the here and now. This anthology provides a fantastic range of settings. You've got straight up space opera (in the most literal sense of the words) with "Callus Redux" by Rebecca Carmi, a hard-boiled mystery caper in Eugie Fosters "All in My Mind," a really cool cowboy tale in "The Bear Eater" by Paul Pence, and the tale of a comet hunt told in a Native American folk style by David Levine in "Ukaliq and the Great Hunt." The tone swings from the truly horrific in Kyle David Jelle's "Hidden Scars" to more playful tales like Carl Frederick's Yeti hunt, "The Beast of All Possible Worlds."

Let me single out a couple of favorites. "Hidden Scars" is a deeply disturbing story. Jelle plunges us into an underworld of people who have dark secrets and go to extreme lengths to keep them. You know the story is going to haunt you right from the opening line: "I love women with scars on their wrists." Jelle's cool, unflinching narrator leads us into a tale of the worst possible human behavior. This is outstanding work, and I can't wait to read more from this promising writer.

"The Bear Eater" was the anthology's biggest surprise. Paul Pence tells the the simplest story in the anthology, and the most suspenseful. A trapper in the old West finds himself stalking a beast big enough to eat bears. The story reminded me of the best of Jack London's adventure stories, a gritty life or death struggle of man versus beast, an intense page turner that keeps you guessing what's next. Highly recommended.

Finally, the cover story, "Hitting the Skids in Pixeltown," by Matthew Rotundo, is a nice artistic argument against the coming age when humans will vanish from film-making, replaced by virtual computer generated doubles. This story takes a gamble by attempting to anticipate the near future of film making, when films such at this summer's "Hulk" already seem to be landing with their toes already over the line of that future. I'm not 100% convinced I buy the premise that actual humans on film trump virtual creations--"Finding Nemo" would have been rather silly with actors in scuba gear and fish masks--but the story still works because Rotundo has crafted a bit of virtual magic of his own. His fictional characters instantly seem real, and you want their attempt at making an "honest" film free of digital magic to succeed. This is good, solid, story-telling.

In fact, the whole book is filled with solid stories. Buy a copy. You won't be disappointed.

      Book Description

Stone Age Wisdom: The Healing Principles of Shamanism is a book about finding a more balanced way to live based on the wisdom of our Stone Age shamanic ancestors. It examines the worldview of our hunter/gatherer ancestors—the worldview out of which shamanism and shamanic practices evolved. But, it is also a book about living an energetically balanced life today. This "shamanic" worldview is something we have forgotten. It is a way of being in the world that honors the sacred nature of the living force that moves through us and through everything around us. It can be expressed through five principles that offer the promise of renewal and guidance in our lives and our spiritual practices.

      These principles are that:

      Everything is Alive.
Everything has its own spirit or energetic signature. From this principle we learn to observe and pay attention to everything around us. We strive to see things as they are and learn their true nature. To explore the experience of energetic observation we practice the shaman's art of vision-shifting.

      Everything is Conscious.
Everything has its own form of conscious awareness. From this principle we learn to be present and to enter into true dialogue with the unseen forces around us. We actively engage spirit and energetic forms. To alter our consciousness and attune to spirit we practice the shamanic art of journeying.

      Everything is Dynamic.
It is the nature of things to move, change and transform. The shaman knows that where there is movement, there is health. Where energy cannot move there is illness. From this principle we learn to be flexible. We learn to sense the movement of energy and when it is blocked. We adapt the shamanic practice of shape-shifting to learn to move energies not by mastering them but by merging with them.

      Everything is Connected.
Everything exists in relationship to everything else. From this principle we learn to be respectful and we come to understand sacred reciprocity and the healing power of relationship. To restore balance and harmony to our relationships we practice ceremony and ritual.

      Everything Responds.
The universe responds to our most sacred intentions. From this principle we learn to be clear and to engage the world with embodied prayer. We serve the unseen world by bringing beauty into the seen world. Bridging the waking and dreaming worlds is the art of dream-weaving.

Stone Age Wisdom isn't simply another manual of shamanic techniques or one person's story of his shamanic experiences. This is not a guide to Native American spiritual beliefs or an attempt to appropriate elements of other cultures. The author is respectful of these cultures, but is most interested in the emerging practice of Integral Shamanism. This is not a guide to becoming a "Shaman." No book can do that. A "Shaman" is a title bestowed on an individual by the community he or she serves. It is a guide to becoming a "shaman." A "shaman" is one who lives a life aligned to the Stone Age Wisdom principles of shamanism—respecting the unseen world, honoring the sacred nature of life, and living in balance.

The practical exercises contained in this book include:

      1. Contemporary Shamanic Dreamwork:
Using the Stone Age Wisdom principles to understand and open to the wisdom of your own dreams.

      2. Vision-Shifting:
Developing the ability to see energetically and sense the true living nature of the world around us.

      3. Journeying:
Altering our consciousness and experiencing ecstatic oneness to enter into dialogue with the conscious, but unseen world.

      4. Shape-Shifting:
Practicing the art of change and learning to move energy.

      5. Conducting Ritual:
Mediating between the seen and the unseen worlds.

      6. Dream-Weaving:
Directing will and intention through embodied prayer and creative action.

We all know what it feels like to live out of balance, but what does it mean to live in balance, and how do we find it? These are the questions that Stone Age Wisdom: The Healing Principles of Shamanism strives to answer.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the best shamanic books ever.......2007-06-15

I own and have read almost every book published on shamanism. Mr. Crockett does a great job of explaining the basics and elaborates on more advanced concepts in a way that to date, no other author has achieved. He writes clearly and enfolds the reader in the experiential nature of shamanism, making the material real and memorable.

5 out of 5 stars Oh, the fond memories this book brings back!.......2007-03-11

Reading this book was truly a passage back in time for me. As I was growing up, I played with so many of the toys listed in this book. The Slinky, Lincoln logs, the Spirograph, Cootie, Mousetrap, Etch a Sketch, Mr. Potato Head, Gumby and Pokey, Rock'Em Sock'Em Robots, Twister, Tinkertoys, Frisbees and the Hula Hoop all passed through my hands. With a large number of children my age in the neighborhood, the toys I didn't have were often owned by others. Therefore, reading this book brought back very fond memories of playing with Clive, Sandy, Dale, Rick, Paul, Terry, Cindy and all the other kids who grew up with toys that you physically manipulated. I strongly recommend this book to anyone with a background similar to mine.

5 out of 5 stars Truly The 100 Greatest Baby Boomer Toys !.......2000-07-26

This 208 page, softbound walk-through-the-past volume features 250 full color, very large, sharp photos that are a joy to behold. I enjoyed looking at the photos and reading each comprehensive write-up. A real memory jogger. I was quite surprised at the number of these things I actually owned as a child, and welcomed seeing them again in life-like color. Even many of the boxes are shown. There's plenty of interesting text accompanying the photos and year 2000 values. The toys run from Easy Bake Ovens, Slinky, Cootie, Thingmakers, Lincoln Logs, and Spirographs to Tootsietoys, Monster Kits, Pez, Colorforms, Life-Size Kitchens, Gilbert, Renwal Doll Stuff and Captain Kangaroo. You'll really enjoy seeing some of these toys you haven't thought of in years. I have many books on baby boomer collectibles, and this one ranks among the best. Get it and enjoy !

        5 out of 5 stars IT'S THOUGHT PROVOKING - AND IT'S EYE CANDY.......2000-05-26

No generation is so defined by its toys as the Baby Boomers. They loved them as kids. They collect them as adults. 100 GREATEST BOOMER TOYS explores the phenomenon. It's fun and it's serious.

First the fun. The books got hundreds of great pictures. It's like a Christmas catalog. Look up old favorites. Discover items you'd forgotten.

And there's a ranking system which seems pretty much designed to provoke arguments. Wait until you see who's #1!

More substantially there are short essays on many of the toys. Little studies in anthropology, in social history, they tell us about the 50's and 60's. The tie-in of G.I. Joe and the draft is, I think, very apt and really well done.

Once you pick it up, you will be drawn in.

I really loved the first (I think) book by these authors. When I saw a new book on scrapbooking sports I got it as soon as it was available. It is really fun! The layouts are beautiful. There is even a step-by-step of how to make a pattern on your paper using a bike tire! Equal weight is given to both girls/women and boys/men. A great book for any scrapbooker.

To recreate the Victorian style of decorating may conjure up nightmarish visions of over-the-top, frilly curtains and heavy, depressing colors. Luckily, Ellen M. Plante reveals how to tastefully transform any room into an elegant and comfortable living space--frills are not compulsory! The Victorian Home is not only a beautifully written design guide to reviving rooms from this era, it's also a fascinating history lesson on the culture of the mid- to late-19th-century gentrified society in Britain. For this privileged class, the home was the "center of the universe, a safe haven from a rapidly industrializing society." Therefore, every chair, ornament, and light fixture was carefully chosen and exquisitely arranged to create a look of maximum opulence. Today, the reasons to "go Victorian" are much simpler. This look can be a lovely addition to any home--a look that is both timeless and elegant. The rooms photographed in The Victorian Home reflect the wonderful versatility of this era. Some rooms merely capture the essence of the period in the style of the fireplace or the choice of wallpaper. Other rooms duplicate the era in every minute detail, right down to the arrangement of dishes and cutlery on a dinner table. Throughout this elegant book are useful sidebars providing tips and techniques for Victorian decorating, and a comprehensive index of expressions and terms. Viva Victoria! --Naomi Gesinger

On today's feature films and commercials, visual effects are achieved using a wide array of tools and techniques, often combining camera techniques with computer-rendered images. This book presents a unique approach to the subject through the direct experiences of noted artists from the feature film, television and commercial realm.

The book is divided into two parts. Part one explores the historical background, including such tools as double exposure, in-camera mattes, miniature photography, Schufftan-technique, front and rear screen projection, Introvision, color difference mattes, motion control and other building blocks that have brought visual effects to its current status. Part two features a series of in-depth interviews with noted artists covering feature film, television, and commercial projects. The reader will learn how these technicians developed their tools and talents, including education, experimentation and development of their craft. The chapters will explore their approaches to various challenges in the projects they've worked on. Subjects such as blue/green screen, motion control, number encoding, plate photography, as well as miniature and creature design and implementation are only some of the areas that are covered. The artists also discuss how they work with the director of photography, how they document the set, production work, preparation for post production, as well as design and development of various composite elements. From how Lucas changed the film world with his STAR WARS TRILOGY to a fabulous glossary of defining lots of terms you need to know from Anamorphic (wide screen photography with aspect ratio) to Xenon lights. This book is a quick course in modern production and directing even for the non-techie Great for the next-generation of game developers and for those who are venturing into the arena of mobile video and online IPTV etc.

4 out of 5 stars Believable characters, good historical and legal drama.......2006-04-06

Having grown up in a small southern Indiana town near the Illinois border, the book evoked strong images of scenes and people I knew in my childhood. The authors managed to avoid the usual stereotypes and gave us a surprise ending, proving their skill at creating characters who seemed like real human beings. Boyd reminded me of some clients I've known who were their own worst enemies, yet a strong sense of justice guided the proceedings despite his character flaws. I also enjoyed the development of the story lines involving WWI and stock market crash from the seldom-seen perspective of middle America.

        5 out of 5 stars A good, solid read.......2004-08-31

I won't go into the storyline - you can read about that above. Just one thing: Don't listen to the critics. This is truely a good book.
I'm very glad I bought it and I'm also sure I'll enjoy a second read. If you like thrillers, adventure stories with solid characters, I suggest you read both the authors' books. All the talk about too many cliches, wobbling storyline - foget about it. Just read it. You won't be disappointed. Promised.

4 out of 5 stars A satisfying read, good and realistic courtroom drama........2004-07-13

I found "Justice for None" to be a very enjoyable read. It crackles with realism--the reader is transported back to the bad old days of the late 1920s, when prosperity was for the few, and hard work and hard luck was the lot of most Americans.

Against the backdrop of the looming and imminent Great Depression this story takes place. The protagonist is a World War One hero, who is also a hard-luck case. Rather than being rewarded and recognized for his heroism in Europe, he is scarred by his wartime suffering, and his marriage does not survive the strain. When someone murders his estranged wife, he is the suspect, and then a fugitive.

The eventual courtroom scenario, as it plays out in the novel, is the story's climax and also involves the best writing in the novel. Further, it seemed to me (I am a trial attorney) that the authors did an exceptionally good job of showing the reason for some of our procedural safeguards in court that protect defendants. The absence of these safeguards in this 1929 trial work to the very great, and unfair, disadvantage of the protagonist. I thought that the authors did an exceptional job of bringing this out, and the trial has a gritty feel of realism, right down to the incident (no real spoiler here) in which the defense attorney realizes that his client has not been entirely truthful or candid with him. There, as in real life, this is a potentially fatal mistake.

The ending surprised me a bit, and the authors do a good job of tying up the loose ends in the story, making for a startling conclusion to a satisfying read.

        5 out of 5 stars a great read!.......2004-06-25

The atmosphere the authors created swept me back in time to the places and experiences of my youth in Illinois. Justice for None vividly and accurately describes post-World War I Mid-America and combines it with suspense to make a powerful novel. I was totally absorbed by this book and enjoyed it thoroughly.

5 out of 5 stars An intriguing and stirring sophomore effort.......2004-05-30

In their first foray into the realm of fiction, Gene Hackman and Daniel Lenihan created "Wake of the Perdido Star", a novel that I believed to be one of the best seafaring novels of recent memory. It made me very eager for future efforts from this tandem. While it has been several years, the wait was well worth it. Their sophomore effort, "Justice for None", is a dramatic departure from their first work, but is a very enjoyable read.

I was frankly quite surprised that Mr. Hackman and Mr. Lenihan would release a novel that is of an entirely different subject and historical era from their first one. It is something that, I believe, most authors have not pulled off well, and in doing so, have alienated much of their fan base. However, Mr. Hackman and Mr. Lenihan proved to be the exception to this pattern.

"Justice for None" is set in the small Illinois town of Vermilion on the eve of the Great Depression. The story involves Boyd Calvin, a struggling World War I veteran who gets caught up in the murder of his estranged wife, which leads to a pair of runs from justice before a climactic trial to prove his innocence.

The Boyd Calvin character is developed very well, and proves to be an interesting focal point for this story. The authors created someone who elicits in the reader an internal conflict. On the one hand, he is a sympathetic character as he struggles with his dark history in the war, the reconciliation with his wife, and his fight against a justice system in which the odds are wholly against him. On the other, he is almost repulsive, as he consistently resists authority and pushes away those who are trying their hardest to help him. This character development works very well, and is somewhat rare to find in these types of stories. It holds your interest and keeps you locked into the plot.

The plot itself is also intriguing, though it is perhaps more of a part of a broader view of this pre-Depression, Midwest society. It seems almost underdeveloped in some places, and was less of a driver in advancing the story. Rather, it supplemented the character elements and external events, such as the impending stock market crash, race relations, and small town life. While this would seemingly be a liability, Mr. Hackman and Mr. Lenihan made it work. The prose is descriptive yet sparse, which paints a very vivid picture, keeps the reader interested, and also serves to drive the plot at a rapid pace.

I also give credit to Mr. Hackman and Mr. Lenihan for the story development. Novels like this usually have a pretty standard ending that the reader knows at the outset. So, there is usually a "surprise" ending, which sometimes works but more often is picked up by the attentive reader well in advance. In "Justice for None", the authors somehow developed a storyline that was unexpected in terms of how the climactic moment would unfold. Then on top of that, they advanced the story to a wholly satisfying conclusion that had an element of surprise that was also not anticipated. What made the ending so good is that while it was a surprise, it was also rather subdued, which actually served to emphasize the impact even more.

So often in reviews - my own included - there is the tendency to rate something in comparison to the authors' previous work. I tried very diligently to avoid doing so here, because of the stark difference between "Justice for None" and "Wake of the Perdido Star". If I were to rate this based on a comparison, I probably would rate this as 4 stars. However, taken as a stand-alone novel - which is more fair and representative of the work - it does merit a rating of a full 5 stars.

Once again, the work of Mr. Hackman and Mr. Lenihan has apppealed to me as a reader, and I am once again looking forward to their next work. Hopefully, it will not be as long a wait, but I am eager to find out what they come up with next.

Academy Award-winning actor Gene Hackman and leading underwater archeologist Daniel Lenihan have combined their talents to create one of the most exciting-and critically acclaimed-adventure novels of our time. A rousing saga of shipwrecks, pirates, and the sea, it chronicles the fate of a young man forced by tragedy to join the crew of the Perdido Star in 1805. From the docks of old Salem, to Cuba and the South Seas, his three-year voyage is a classic coming-of-age adventure that is truly "an American swashbuckler" (Kirkus Reviews).

After reading some other reviews,i almost didn't read the book. i'm glad i did! Don't listen to the literary snobs who find fault with every book;if you like a good story, this one has everything. Adventure, conflict, danger, complex human emotions, friendship and teamwork. i like a story that keeps me wondering what will happen next! i found this one thoroughly satisfying, and it could be a great movie.

        5 out of 5 stars Action Packed.......2006-06-25

This book has more action in a single chapter than most authors can put in a trilogy! The best sea saga I've ever read!

4 out of 5 stars Not a bad first effort.......2005-03-22

Reminiscent of Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin and Julian Stockwin's Kydd/Renzi in the pairing of the intellectual LeMaire with the man of action O'Reilly, it is also set in the same period, albeit American- rather than European-based.
We follow half-caste Jack's progression from mild-mannered teenager to ruthless pirate on a mission to eradicate slavers and avenge his parent's death and dishonour.
In a mixture of 'Swiss family Robinson' and 'Captain Blood', the Perdido Star, captained by a crazed drunkard, is wrecked on a desert island, having made heavy weather of rounding the Horn. Neighbouring islanders, salvaged materials and the ingenuity of the survivors combine to provide a comfortable semblance of home, which is rudely shattered by the appearance of a Dutch VOC ship collecting human 'cargo'. Jack is persuaded by circumstances and his friend Paul that the only way to right the wrongs of the world is to take action - and there is action aplenty in this gripping, although slightly pulpy, first novel from Hackman & Lenihan.
Well-drawn characters and an intriguing plot combine to make a story to rival the best in the genre.

1 out of 5 stars Reviewer from Independent Publisher Magazine.......2004-06-07

I wonder who the professional literary critics were who gave this book such high marks. I agree with whomever wrote the review "The Lightning Never Strikes." I am a former reviewer for INDEPENDENT PUBLISHER MAGAZINE and was given the go-ahead to review Mr. Gene Hackman's first novel. Since I am also a writer who writes nonfiction books about piracy, I was definitely enthusiastic about this swashbuckling novel! But unfortunately I struggled through quicksand to the middle of the book, then called my editor and pleaded with him not to make me finish it and write a review. Since this was right after the book's publishing date, I don't remember the specific superficial scenes I slogged through. I just remember the book was filled with cardboard characters, dumb dialogue, many erroneous facts, and a stupid plot. I don't recommend that anyone waste their time with this novel. Instead, read a novel such as THE DIARY OF A SLAVE GIRL, RUBY JO that includes pirate photos and illustrations as well as nonfiction information about pirates that seems accurate.

4 out of 5 stars A boy's adventure story isn't the worst thing in the world.......2002-01-17

Fair enough. It reads like a pulp action story, at times. And our hero Jack is a little to good to be true. Mighty thews and all. Brooding countenance and flashing eyes. However that doesn't make this a bad book. It makes it a pretty entertaining and action-packed book, and while Jack may be a little unbelievable, the action and story aren't unbelievable. Essentially, Jack, the 18 year old son of a gun smith, is swept off on a whirlwind adventure that takes him from the fledgling USA to Cuba to the South Pacific. In it, he encounters self-righteous Yankees, evil Cuban noblemen, bloodthirsty Pacific Islanders (savages, don't you know), bloodthirstier Dutch slavers, and British press gangs. Okay, there are a lot of cliches (and I mean a lot), but there is a lot of fun in here too. And despite the notorious and nigh-legendary phrase "the pintles were sprung from the gudgeon," there's not an overwhelming amount of sea-stuff in here. Try reading Patrick O'Brian and you'll see what I mean. This book is comparable to Wilbur Smith's "Birds of Prey." Kinda like an old Errol Flynn movie. I enjoyed this book a good bit, and would be interested in reading more from these authors.

Gene Hackman has ridden the Hollywood rollercoaster to emerge arguably as one of the industry's most respected actors. the odds were against Gene Hackman becoming a star but after his Oscar-winning performance in the French Connection he was pulled in two directions-by his own integrity as an actor to choose work of quality and by the lure of commercial film-making. When he found he was unable to bridge the gap his life and career began to crumble under the pressure. He managed to forge a comeback that was a make-or-break attempt to rebuild his career. Without much forethought or design he managed to build upon his reputation as a brilliant actor who was in demand by directors

        5 out of 5 stars I love this man!.......2000-03-31

This was a good book. Case closed. Hackman was great in BONNIE AND CLYDE! I love that movie.

2 out of 5 stars Errors are rife.......1997-09-22

In just picking up the book I found one typo on the first page I turned to, and when I looked at the pages on "Get Shorty," Dennis Farina's name was spelled incorrectly (this was not a typo, even the index had it wrong). Any idiot who knows anything about character actors would know how to spell his name, or at least have an accurate cast list. The book doesn't do a good job dealing with the films. The author writes a few anecdotes, then simply reports how it was reviewed. Hackman deserves better
